2016 MARY COLBY TEA NAMES MEREDITH KHACHIGIAN AS HONORARY CHAIRPERSON Casa Romantica, a premiere Southern California cultural center and gardens, is pleased to announce the appointment of Meredith Khachigian as the Honorary Chairperson for their 2016 Mary Colby Tea fundraiser. The Casa’s annual Mary Colby Tea supports its mission to provide the community with free children’s educational and cultural opportunities through “Casa Kids” programming, and preserves a yearly gathering started by longtime San Clemente resident and business owner Mary Colby. This year’s Mary Colby Tea will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and tickets are $65 each. Meredith Khachigian chaired the Board of Regents of the University of California (UC) for three terms, and managed the leading public research university in the nation. She has combined a career in public service with her dedication to the needs of others and is well-known in the United States for her achievements. She has served as an advocate for the UC system in Washington, D.C., meeting with legislators on issues important to the hospitals and medical schools as well as to the people of California. She has also held a role as President of Human Options, a shelter for battered women. Khachigian is a resident of San Clemente. Alton Brown Makes a Stop at Segerstrom Center During New National Tour Eat Your Science May 13, 2016
Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes Television personality, author and Food Network star Alton Brown on his new national tour Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science coming to Segerstrom Center for the Arts May 13, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. Brown’s first North American tour, Edible Inevitable was a huge success over two years and 100 cities with more than 150,000 fans in attendance. With Eat Your Science, fans can expect more comedy, talk show antics, multimedia presentations and music (yes, he sings), but Brown is adding a slew of fresh ingredients including new puppets, songs, bigger and potentially more dangerous experiments and what every cook needs in his kitchen: FIRE. Parents and children enjoy spending quality time together, but it’s not always easy to find shared interests. The backyard, however, can provide the perfect place for generations to meet when parents help kids learn the delights of birdwatching and bird-feeding. Interacting with backyard birds benefits children on many levels, including teaching them the responsibility of caring for other living things to nurturing their appreciation of nature. Fall and winter are the perfect times to introduce kids to backyard bird care; as food sources dwindle in their natural habitat, birds will frequent a backyard where feeders serve up seed and suet daily. The wild bird experts at Cole’s Wild Bird Products offer some guidance for families launching bird feeding lessons: Feeder facts: Different bird species like different types of feeders, but some styles, such as tube feeders, will attract a large variety of birds. Here are some basic foods birds look for in winter: * Suet - Long gone are the days when serving suet was a messy proposition. Kids can serve suet without messing up their little hands when you choose convenient suet cakes, kibbles, nuts and pearls. Many of these suet options are mixed with other treats birds love, such as nuts, grains and berries. You can even find options with habanero pepper infused in the fat to dissuade squirrels from dining on the suet. Cook Up a Mother’s Day to Remember
Mother’s Day is a time for wining, dining and celebrating moms everywhere. Make this Mother’s Day one to remember by hosting a special brunch get-together for the special ladies in your life. Although quality time together is the true purpose of the day, you can add some special touches to help create a one-of-a-kind brunch to share old memories while you make new ones. Plan your tablescape. Colorful, fragrant flowers and luxurious linens make your everyday table shine. Use plates in complementing shades and sparkling glassware for an elegant touch. If you have room, add personal touches to the centerpiece, such as
mementoes from shared trips or small picture frames with pictures of the two of you through the years. Prepare a sophisticated menu. Give a nod to the importance of the day with dishes that are a step above standard brunch fare. A richly flavored entree such as this Spring Vegetable and Chevre Tart looks elegant but is surprisingly easy to make. Spring Vegetable and Chevre Tart Recipe courtesy of Courtney O’Dell of Sweet C’s Designs 1 package (2 sheets) puff pastry 1 cup chevre, divided
1 large beefsteak tomato, thinly sliced 8 ounces thin green beans 2 beets, thinly sliced 4 mini zucchinis, thinly sliced 1 egg white, beaten until slightly foamy Heat oven to 350 F. On well-greased baking sheet, arrange one puff pastry sheet. Crumble chevre across pastry. Lay tomato slices then green beans, zucchini and beets over chevre, leaving a 1-inch border around all edges. Crumble second half of chevre on top. Lightly wet edges of pastry. Slice four 1-inch strips of second sheet of pastry and lay over edges of bottom sheet. (Optional: create basketweave pattern with remaining pastry dough). Brush pastry with egg white and bake until pastry is deep golden brown, about 35 minutes. Serve immediately. Pinot Noir Rosemary Butter Recipe courtesy of Erin Kennedy of My Thirty Spot Blog 1 cup salted homemade whipped butter (recipe below) 3/4 cup Cambria Benchbreak Pinot Noir 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary Fill shallow saucepan with wine and simmer until consistency becomes syrupy (reducing to about 1/8 cup).
Let syrup cool completely. Add syrup and rosemary to whipped butter and mix. Serve chilled. Homemade Whipped Butter 1/2 quart heavy cream 1/2 teaspoon salt (up to 3/4 teaspoon, to taste) In food processor, mix butter until cream turns to consistency of cottage cheese and starts to separate from buttermilk, about 3-5 minutes of constant mixing. Strain butter from buttermilk. Use wooden spoon to knead butter in water (just like dough) to remove all remaining buttermilk. Drain and repeat until water is clear. Remaining whipped butter is ready to serve or for adding flavoring ingredients.

Your new bundle of joy has just arrived. In addition to midnight feedings and changing diapers, new parents need to take important steps to set up their children for success in the years to come. This document is the gateway to obtaining other important documentation throughout life, such as a Social Security number, a stateissued photo I.D. or a passport. Here are additional tips from FindLaw.com that every new parent should consider: Get a Social Security number: Many hospitals allow you to apply for a Social Security number at the same time they are recording your child’s birth. You’ll need the number for a variety of reasons, from declaring your new child as a dependent on your federal and state income taxes to setting up education savings and retirement accounts. Child identity theft is a growing problem, so be sure to safeguard this information. Obtain custodial rights: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of four firstborn babies is born to an unmarried couple living together. In nearly every state, the mother has 100 percent custody rights until paternity (identity of the father) is established. It’s in the
child’s financial interest to confirm paternity to guarantee that the father helps support the child financially until he or she turns 18. On the other side, if the father wants to guarantee visitation rights or have a say in how the child is raised, it’s in his interest to initiate the paternity process. Sign up your child for health insurance: Immediately add your child as a dependent on your health insurance plan. If you don’t have coverage, research options online or through your state. Remember, it will be mandatory for everyone to have coverage in 2014 with the passage of the Affordable Health Care Act. Consider term life insurance: A customized term life insurance policy can help cover expenses in the event that you or your spouse unexpectedly dies before your child reaches adulthood. You also may consider purchase coverage to pay off your home or any debts. Select a legal guardian: The other issue to settle in the unexpected death of a parent is to choose a legal guardian in your will. This person would assume legal responsibility for your child until adulthood. Before you designate someone for this, talk to the person to see if he or she is willing to accept the responsibility. If you don’t have a will, new parents can find an attorney with experience in wills and estates in their local area by visiting FindLaw.com.
Fingerprint your child: While it is horrifying to imagine, in the event that your child should go missing, fingerprints and a recent photo of your child can assist authorities. There are many kits available online for you to gather and organize this information. Get your child immunized: Many state laws require that newborns be immunized for a number of childhoodrelated diseases before they can enter day care or school. Establish a relationship with a pediatrician and make sure that your child is immunized at the recommended stages of growth. Know your legal rights at work: Check with your employer about policies related to raising a child and how a new child may affect your
benefits. Review paid-time off, sick day and other attendance policies so you are prepared for your child’s own sick days, school conferences and other events. Start saving now: As soon as you receive your new child’s Social Security number, you should immediately consider opening up a 529 savings plan or Coverdell education savings account. Both can be used to cover future qualified educational expenses for your child. its 30th annual mother-daughter luncheon and fashion show at the Balboa Bay Club and Resort. This year’s luncheon theme, “Fashion Fling,” proved once again that although fashions may change with the seasons, enthusiastic community support for outstanding organizations like National Charity League, Jrs. is never out of style. More than 430 guests stepped out for an afternoon of fun, food and fashion supporting NCL, Jrs. in raising nearly $80,000.00 this year in support of three local charities: High Hopes Head Injury Program, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) and the Harry and Grace Steele Children’s Center at Orange Coast College. The Balboa Bay Club’s entrance and ballroom was transformed in keeping with the theme “Fashion Fling” for the festive afternoon that honored the

out-going 6th-grade members and their mothers. The adults were served with a Cobb Salad with Bread and Cheesecake for dessert. The children enjoyed lemonade, cheeseburger sliders, French fries, fruit skewers and sundaes for dessert! During lunch, a wonderful silent auction was happening with plenty of items to choose from for both adults and the children. Two Adele tickets to her upcoming concert in October in the premier section with parking was up for grabs as well as four tickets to see Dave Matthews at the Irvine Verizon Wireless Theater. A vacation at the Four Seasons Punta Mita for 4 nights along with airfare, two lodge level tickets for the American Music Awards Show and round trip flight for 4 people from Orange County to Las Vegas on a Phenom 100 JetSuite were just some of the Adult items. The lively show included plenty of highfives from the models passing by the lineup of attentive young girls in their traditional place along the runway. The Newport Beach Chapter of National Charity League, Juniors, is composed of women with daughters ranging from kindergarten through 6th grade. The purpose of NCL Jrs. is to initiate and promote charitable endeavors, and to foster mother-daughter relationships in philanthropic, cultural and social activities. by Mary Langenback Every one of us has had or has a mother or step mother, at some point in our lives. Mothers day has been celebrated since the early 1900’s. Although my own mother has passed away and I have no children of my own, I still remember her wonderful influence on my life. In celebration of mother’s day I wanted to learn about the history of mother’s day and was surprised to find out that it was originally a woman’s reaction to war. Julia Ward Howe, herself influenced by a one Anna Jarvis who sought to improve sanitation through “Mother’s Work days” in the mid 1850’s. So originally Mother’s day was a day for Mothers to work to improve the lives of those around them. Julia Ward Howe, who lived through the Civil War, saw it as the only way to attempt to stop men from warring with each other. Call it what you will, but her idea was a day of peace. In 1870 she gave a proclamation (Read in full at: http://womenshistory.about.com/ od/howejwriting/a/mothers_day.htm) for women to take counsel together after mourning their dead and to make an attempt to influence those around them, especially their family members, to do all they can to stop war and live at peace with their brothers and sisters around the globe. It was to be remembered that war has many other side effects than just the funerals during and afterward. There was an emotional effect upon women all over the world, crying for their dead, some who had depended upon those men for support, in societies that do not allow women to work. Some of these women with no men to depend on must get married to men they don’t like, or go into prostitution for survival. The effect also was (and is) economic, men in the 1800’s were the primary bread winners even here in America. Mothers day was first celebrated in a small church, the church in Virginia where Anna Jarvis’ daughter Page 16
attended. Soon this holiday spread to most of the other 48 continental states. By 1920 it had been celebrated as a national holiday. Slowly, but surely we have stripped it of its original meaning, and have continued to war against ourselves (even our own family members and neighbors) and those of other countries. Even now we are at war in several places in the middle east. Our sons, and husbands, and fathers and lovers have gone off to war and this month we are going to sit at home with those who have stayed behind and celebrate the fact that we, or our relatives and friends, are mothers. Some husbands and families will cry (inside at least), because now there are some mothers at war. We have come a long, long way and it is so very, very sad to say where we have ended up. We celebrate, adore, worship, and congratulate the mothers, the first time mothers, the oldest mother’s, the youngest mothers and the mothers with the most children. This is not how Mother’s day was supposed to be celebrated. As I said earlier, the original Mothers day was “celebrated” by mothers going out and caring about the health and sanitation of their communities. So, this Mother’s day when you are buying her gifts and taking her out to dinner, take a long, long look at her. Think of what the world would be without our mothers, without our mother’s love and teaching. Think about what femininity meant to society in the past. It meant a caregiver in the family, a teacher, a spiritual leader, one who would (ideally) teach about peace and brotherhood. Then, talk together, after the younger kids have gone to bed, about how mothers, fathers and possibly what your family can do this next year to influence others to stop war. Lets get back to Julia Ward Howe’s original plea: Disarm! Disarm! or even the 1960’s motto: “Make love, not war”!

Understanding Blepharoplasty Every year, hundreds of thousands of men and women choose blepharoplasty to improve the way they look. Droopy eyelids can make you look older and can also impair vision. Blepharoplasty corrects these problems and also removes puffiness and bags under the eyes that make you look worn and tired. This procedure cannot alter dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, nor can it change sagging eyebrows. Though blepharoplasty is often performed as a single procedure, your surgeon may also recommend a browlift, facelift, or skin resurfacing to achieve the best results. “My droopy eyelids were driving me crazy. Understanding the Surgery
In upper eyelid surgery, the surgeon first marks the individual lines and creases of the lids in order to keep the scars as invisible as possible along these natural folds. The incision is made, and excess fat is removed or repositioned, and then the loose muscle and skin are removed. Fine sutures are used to close the incisions, thereby minimizing the visibility of any scar. In lower eyelid surgery, the surgeon makes the incision in an inconspicuous site along the lashline and smile creases of the lower lid. Excess fat, muscle, and skin are then trimmed away before the incision is closed with fine sutures. Eyelid puffiness caused primarily by excess fat may be corrected by a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. The incision in this case is made inside the lower eyelid, and excess fatty material is removed. When sutures are used to close this kind of incision, they are invisible to the eye. They are also commonly self-dissolving and leave no visible scar. Under normal conditions, blepharoplasty can take from one to two hours. A more refreshed look is often the result when eye bags are improved with blepharoplasty.
What to Expect After the Surgery
Immediately after the surgery has been completed, your surgeon may apply tiny sterile bandages. This is not done for transconjunctival blepharoplasty. It is not crucial that the eyes be covered. However, an ointment to prevent dryness of the eye area may be used. A certain degree of swelling and bruising is normal. Cold compresses, as well as head elevation when lying down, will enhance healing and relieve discomfort. Your surgeon will prescribe medication for discomfort. For a week and a half following blepharoplasty, you will clean the eye area (the eyes may feel sticky, dry, and itchy). Eyedrops may be recommended. Your surgeon will also list activities and environments to avoid in the weeks immediately following surgery. Permanent stitches will be removed in three to five days after surgery. Self-absorbing stitches will dissolve on their own. The risks of blepharoplasty are fairly minimal but include poor healing, persistent fat or loose skin and muscle, dry eyes, and very rarely, visual changes or loss. Facial plastic surgery makes it possible to correct many facial flaws and signs of premature aging that can undermine self-confidence. By changing how you look, facial plastic surgery can help change how you feel about yourself. Insurance does not generally cover surgery that is done purely for cosmetic reasons. Surgery to correct or improve vision or surgery for eye deformity or injury may be reimbursable in whole or in part. It is the patient’s responsibility to check with the insurance carrier for information on the degree of coverage. In a blepharoplasty, the eyelids heal remarkably quickly and scars are usually quite inconspicuous. Insurance does not generally cover surgery that is done purely for cosmetic reasons.
