Broadway Stars and Hello Dolly Bars Featured at Ocean Institute Fund Raiser September 9, 2017

If you don’t know what Hello Dolly Bars are, you need to make the Sand Dollar Guild’s “An Evening On Broadway” on September 9 a priority! In addition to an amazing musical journey through your favorite Broadway musicals, performed by Broadway star Ivan Rutherford and friends, you will taste a bit of Broadway history. “Hello Dolly Bars” were created by the original caterer for the opening night party of “Hello Dolly” on Broadway. One of our local Sand Dollar Members inherited it from her mother in Aztec New Mexico, who got it from the caterer. These melt-inyour-mouth memories will be served as dessert for a delicious dinner prior to the start of the musical evening. Mission Viejo Country Club Executive Chef Bob Peterson has planned a special menu for the occasion, starring a plethora of appetizers and food stations at the lovely venue. Crostini of Gorgonzola, Fig spread, Malaysian Chicken Satay provide the pre-course for the Chinese Chicken salad and the Fusilli Pasta Alfredo with Meat Sauce.

Bob is a graduate of the Western Culinary Institute, and has been in the hospitality and culinary industry for over 25 years. The Sand Dollar Guild of the Ocean Institute is hosting it’s second annual “An Evening on Broadway”, September 9, 2017 at the Mission Viejo Country Club, 26200 Country Club Drive, Mission Viejo from 5 PM to 8 PM. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Ocean Institute’s popular Ocean in Motion program. The specially equipped van and trained instructors reach out to special needs and underserved children in Orange County and beyond. The Sand Dollar Guild has raised over 1.4 million dollars since 1988 towards the Institute’s capital campaign and special equipment, including two specially equipped vans, sails for the Institute’s Tall Ship Pilgrim, the Maddie James Seaside Learning Center and the new Ocean Education Center. Doors open for this year’s event at 5 pm to a special menu light supper and no-host bar. The elegant evening

of favorite musical pieces from hit Broadway shows like Les Miserables, West Side Story, Hello Dolly, Grease, and Oklahoma will be performed by Ivan Rutherford, whose acclaimed Broadway singing career includes over 2300 performances playing the lead role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables. He is joined by Shannon Brennan, co-Director and co-star of Broadway Nights Cabaret, and Robert Meffe , Director of Music for the MFA Musical Theater Program at SDSU.. A silent auction with exciting vacation and restaurant packages and services will also hit a high note of the evening. Palm Springs Hilton offers a stay which includes the use of a car from Allen Cadillac. A stay at The Ranch has spa treatments included. A charming condo and dinner in exclusive Rancho Mirage courtesy of Mavar Realty is the perfect get-away. Rounds of golf from area golf courses, merchandise and services from local businesses such as Stance, Mike’s Pet Care, Salon Incognito and original signed artwork by local artists , theater tickets and

Broadway star Ivan Rutherford more will round out the evening’s fun. The Ocean Institute is a nonprofit, community based marine education facility. Their nationally recognized science and maritime history programs host over 125,000 students per year from throughout Southern California and surrounding states. Tickets are on sale now. Premium seating is on a first come first served basis. Please contact Katy Moss, Sand Dollar Membership Chair, for ticket information. 949-494-4281, or www.ocean-institute.org/generalinformation/sand-dollar-guild.

CASA ROMANTICA CELEBRATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF TOAST TO THE CASA TOAST TO THE CASA 15TH ANNIVERSARY CRYSTAL BALL: FORTUNE FAVORS THE BRAVE Gala raises critical funding for innovative artistic and educational programs Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 5:30pm-10:00pm

Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is proud to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its annual Toast to the Casa gala, which raises critical funding for its artistic and educational programs. Funds from the gala also support the preservation of the historic Ole Hanson home and maintenance for its 2.5 acres of coastal botanical gardens. Toast to the Casa 15th Anniversary Crystal Ball: Fortune Favors the Brave will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 5:30pm to 10:00pm. “As we celebrate the gala’s 15th anniversary, traditionally the Crystal anniversary, and the Ole Hanson home’s 90th anniversary, we honor our past,” says Executive Director Berenika Schmitz. “Simultaneously, we forge our vision for the future of our cultural institution. Casa Romantica’s vision is to be a southern California destination for artistic entertainment and education programs, and to make culture accessible to people of all ages.” Key elements of the black-tie fundraiser include sampling fare from over twenty local restaurants, wineries & breweries, enjoying spectacular entertainment, and bidding on international trips, tickets, entertainment, jewelry, and more in live and silent auctions. The 15th Annual Toast to the Casa is headlined by nationally-acclaimed boogie and blues band Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers. The group will perform on the Main Stage in the Historic Courtyard. The music lineup also includes the Beverly Belles, an Andrews Sisters-inspired vintage female singing trio who will perform on the Main Stage as well as at the Ocean Terrace stage, and NomiS, a San Diego-based DJ spinning fresh, funky remixes of Top 40 and R&B hits in Casa Romantica’s Amphitheater by the Sea. In a play on the words “Crystal Ball,” the 15th annual Toast to The Casa’s shimmering glass decor will be complemented by fortune-themed entertainment. The brave may try their luck at stations around Casa

The Redmonds are active philanthropists for the arts and for medicine throughout southern California, and have improved thousands of lives via Redmond Orthodontics, the family practice that they founded over four decades ago. “It is fitting that the Redmonds should be honored at such a special time in Casa Romantica’s growth,” says Executive Director Berenika Schmitz. Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens was named Arts OC’s 2017 Arts Organization of the Year in June. The same month, the institution published its Impact Report, revealing figures such as a staggering increase of nearly 300% in general admissions and a 900% increase in memberships over the past four years. Casa Romantica received national press for its yearlong art and horticulture initiative Casa Coastal: Rebecca Louise Law, which culminated recently in an art exhibition featuring 8,000 live hanging flora, and received critical appreciation in 2017 for its commission of a multicompany dance performance and its music fundraiser headlined by Les Miserables Broadway star Ivan Rutherford. “Casa Romantica is the only center of its kind in South Orange County, providing unique cultural and educational programs, workshops, performances and events for people of all ages in our nationally registered

Stars and Stripes Tournament Raises Over $3 Million to Benefit Children’s Charities Photos by: David Nash With the stunning background of Cabo San Lucas, the 21st Annual Stars & Stripes Tournament, a three-day fishing tournament, golf tournament and music festival, with an exclusive VIP Night to kick off the weekend, benefited seven charities and raised more than $3 million for worthy youth charities in Orange County, San Diego and Mexico. This year’s tournament raised more funds than any other year in the fundraiser’s 21-year history. Since its conception in 1997, Stars & Stripes Tournament has raised nearly $30 million – more than any other fishing tournament benefiting children’s charities in the United States. This year’s sponsors include: SASCO, The Anaheim Ducks, Allen & Susan Boerner, The Fruchbom Family, The Honda Center, Majestic Realty and Miller Environmental. “I can say with confidence that the Stars & Stripes Fishing, Golf and Music Festival stands alone with a one-of-a-kind approach to fun and fundraising,” said Stars & Stripes Board Member Tim Ryan, CEO of the Honda Center and executive vice president of The Anaheim Ducks. “Thanks to the army of remarkable individuals who give their time and resources each year, we have been able to generate nearly $30 million since the event’s inception to help children in need.” More than 600 people joined in on the four-day adventure held from June 22-25 at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort in Mexico in support of seven youth organizations: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, Miracles for Kids, Orangewood Foundation, HomeAid Orange County, Tilly’s Life Center, South Bay Community Services (SBCS) and Building Baja’s Future. The 2017 Honorary Charities included: Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), PLASTICOS Foundation and Halo for Freedom Warrior Foundation. A volunteer board of directors, “The Knights,” manages the event along with Ryan, which includes members Dick Gebhard, Found at Pinnacle Land Management; Al Baldwin, chairman at Baldwin and Sons; Jeff Cunningham, senior vice president of Construction Management Services at Shea Properties; Larry Kirkenslager, senior vice president of pre-construction for Sasco Electric Inc.; Charles Ruck, partner at Latham & Watkins LLP; Erik Anderson, president of Anderson Financial, and Zlatko Zadro, president of Zadro Products, Inc. Stars & Stripes Board Chairman Dick Gebhard came up with the idea when he was a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. “We are incredibly grateful to the Stars & Stripes tournament for including us in this impactful weekend that supports children in our community,” said Melissa Beck, chief executive officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County and the Inland Empire. The premier Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort served as the luxurious home base for the 2017 Stars & Stripes Tournament, with guests enjoying incredible views, private terraces and swimmable beaches. At sunrise, each day of the tournament, anglers launched into the abundant waters off the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, a fertile environment for plenty of sport-fish species. The Sea of Cortez also provided the backdrop for golfers playing at Mexico’s premier courses– Chileno Bay Club, Cabo Real Golf Club, Palmilla Golf Club and Quivira Golf Club. This unique fundraising event, has developed a reputation for attracting famed musicians and bands to perform. This year’s event featured an all-star lineup including: Kenny Loggins, Kelly Hansen of Foreigner, Mickey Thomas of Jefferson Starship and Cameron Rafferty. In a stunning act, a veteran from the HALO for Freedom Warrior Foundation, Dana Bowman jumped from a helicopter releasing an American Flag into the sky while musician, Cameron Rafferty, sang “The Star-Spangled Banner”. The event featured a live auction including an all access pass to Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas with Shawn Parr, “The Ambassador of Country Music,” star of Nash Nights Live (and the voice of Stars & Stripes Tournament, the Golden Globes and the American Music Awards) held at the MGM Grand in April 2018 (Sold for $35,000), and an intimate whale watching experience in Laguna Ojo De Liebre, Baja California (Sold for $25,000). The Stars & Stripes tournament, benefiting youth charities since 1997, is a world-class charity fundraiser. The hugely popular event has raised and donated nearly $30 million to youth charities. Orange Coast College’s Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion will present “etere ferme,” its first exhibit of the 2017-18 school year, from Sept. 21 until Dec. 8. An opening reception will take place on Sept. 28 from 5–8 p.m. in the Doyle Arts Pavilion. “etere ferme” features the activist artwork of artist Kim Abeles, a notable figure in the Los Angeles art world since the 1980s, when she began creating community based work with partners such as the California Science Center, The Department of Mental Health, and the California Bureau of Automotive Repair. Her projects explore the complicated, interconnected systems of our world: society, geography, and environment. “With thorough research and collaboration, bold materials and at times quirky humor, Abeles’ elegant visuals exemplify the power of artists to communicate thoughtfully about tricky political and social subjects, and her installations are as thought provoking as they are beautiful,” writes curator Kim Garrison Means. Abeles uses site-specific installation, non-traditional materials, craft and digital technology to tell stories about

feminism, conservationism and social justice. Her work has been exhibited in 22 countries, including large-scale installations in Vietnam, Thailand, Czech Republic, England, China and South Korea. Included in the exhibition is work from Abeles’ series, “Smog Collectors.” This work contains imagery created through an ingenious process of exposing materials to air pollution for specific lengths of time. Another piece is “Forty Days and Forty Nights (Forty Days of Smog),” an installation of a family dining room complete with table and chairs, wall décor, baby bassinet and high chair, where all the table settings, food, toys and a window were created with smog. Also featured in the show is “Pearls of Wisdom – End the Violence,” created in collaboration with 800 survivors of domestic violence and the organization, A Window Between Worlds, and funded by the James Irvine Foundation. Using the metaphor of valuable pearls formed inside oysters in response to an irritant, Abeles designed a community artmaking workshop for participants to recast personal memories of domestic pain into iridescent sculptural pearls.

Following the making of the sculptural pearls, she recorded the advice that each person would share with their younger self or with another person in need. For Arts Pavilion hours of operation, visit www.orangecoastcollege.edu/ artspavilion Orange Coast College, founded

Thousands of Volunteers to Make Orange County Beaches Sparkle with World’s Largest Trash Cleanup On September 16, thousands of Orange County residents will head to sites across the county to play their part in the world’s largest trash cleanup for Coastal Cleanup Day. Registration is now open for all 51 cleanup sites in Orange County, organized by Orange County Coastkeeper and Trails4All. Orange County beaches and waterways collect trash that travels from inland communities via the county’s rivers and storm drains. Beach cleanups stand as a last line of defense to prevent this debris from polluting the ocean and its wildlife. Orange County’s cleanup sites are included as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day, which encourages volunteers to leave the Golden State’s beaches sparkling. This statewide event is part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, the largest volunteer event on the planet. Last year, more than 7,200 Orange County volunteers collected more than 56,600 pounds of trash and recyclable materials during the threehour event. Some of the most obscure findings included Keurig machines, soda cans from the 1980’s and a Bosu balance ball. “So many people don’t understand the impact of coastal pollution until they see it up close,” says Lauren

Smith, Orange County Coastkeeper’s volunteer coordinator. “At Coastal Cleanup Day, people learn that small actions like removing trash from the sand can have a huge ripple effect.” Coastkeeper, the Huntington and Bolsa Chica State Beach Interpretive Offices and local partners will be hosting a Trash Free OC Jamboree at three cleanup locations after the event. The events will feature educational games and activities, sponsor booths and prizes and a celebration to all of our dedicated volunteers. These events will occur at Huntington State Beach and the Back Bay Science Center. The third location will be announced soon on Coastkeeper’s website. Attendance is free and supplies will be provided. However, Coastkeeper aspires to accomplish a low-waste event and asks that volunteers bring their own cleanup supplies including a bucket or reusable bag, gloves and reusable water bottle. In addition to volunteering, residents and businesses can support Coastal Cleanup Day with donations and sponsorships. To register for Coastal Cleanup Day and find the site closest to you, visit www.coastkeeper.org/ccd. For more information, contact Lauren Smith at lauren@coastkeeper.org. The San Clemente News

QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente, Talega, Dana Point? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!
