Conceptual Statement There are multiple narratives that have shaped and formed Calgary's culture and will continue to influence the future. In this sense History can be seen as a multifaceted phenomenon. It is something often seen in a singular sense but if we refract this perspective we see history has many facets.

All the cities has many histories through which it’s has developed and advanced in all means. Same like , Calgary has a lot of histories on which it is standing today. We through our building called ‘Centre for Alternate Histories’ want to present this histories to the city and the people of it. The concept of our project is: There are multiple narratives that have shaped and formed Calgary's culture and will continue to influence the future. In this sense History can be seen as a multifaceted phenomenon. It is something often seen in a singular sense but if we refract this perspective we see history has many facets. The way we saw history was a multifaceted phenomenon that each of its subcategories is one of its refraction. As we are talking about alternate histories, we looked at the term multifaceted and devoted the ideas of refraction of light through prism. The way a white lights dispersed into 7 colours after passing through the prism, we want our centre to be that same lens through which the white light of Calgary can disperse into its alternate histories. Thus our parti is ‘dispersion as multifaceted’ The project program is categorized into exhibition spaces, educational spaces, community engagement spaces, administrative and support services. Each of these categories of program are planned with respect to the orientation of the building and the interaction of spaces with the central lobby as the exploration of reflection through the center. Each of the exhibition space has a refracted entry point following the exsisting pathways on the site.

The ‘Institute of Alternate Histories’ addresses the dispersion of Calgary's different histories. The program aims to take a singular viewpoint of history and refract it revealing the many narratives that make up our history. It seeks to build new forms of knowledge for society that have led to the enhancement of the city.

Solar Study

AFTERNOON

The “Centre for Alternate Histories” is designed on the basis of climatic conditions, as well as passive design techniques. We conceptualised a variety of potential approaches concerning passive design and its integration with the landscape to reduce heating load during the winter and cooling load during the summer.

Passive Stratergies

The south-facing library receives direct heat gain by means of glazing wall. Heat gained from this space will be stored using a concrete mass floor, helping the whole spaces in each section towards heating. The heat gain through the south-facing glazing are controlled using horizontal overhangs incorporated in the walls. The upper level trusses provide shade for the lower-level spaces with glass facade.

28

Passive Stratergies

The next approach seeks to reduce lighting loads in the building by using natural light in the building's strategic spaces. Daylight has the highest quality colour rendering (a CRI of 100) and is therefore suitable for the optimum performance of tasks inside the building. The amount of light receiving is considered based on the function being done eah space. The library thus receives more direct light, whereas seminar room gains natural light through the adjacent glass cube and finally the exhibition space receives a narrow beam of light through the skylight which speaks the language of the design.

Passive Stratergies

Considering the cold climate of Calgary and the temperature difference between the buiding envelope and outside, entrance vestibules were designed to make a transitional space to restore the heat inside the buiding. Since a shed roof generally has a much steeper slope, it allows the water to run down and over the edge. Pooling water on a roof can cause leaks and other damage. Lots of built-up snow adds extra weight to the roof that can also cause damage, therefore; shedding water and snow more efficiently is a definite advantage. Making use of 18% of slope, we tried to reduce the consequent damages of water and snow on the roofs.
