Aquathon #2
A busy time of year meant that only a lovely group of four; Mark, Mel, Linda and Jo, competed in the aquathon. Mark won the event taking the lead from Mel in transition and then extending it in the swim. It was really nice to see first timers Linda and Jo and for once we had more girls than boys! Thanks to Jenny and Keith for the photos and support.

Running in Nepal By Thierry Massa During our 7 year Round the World tour I have always celebrated my birthday th on December 24 in a different country. 2013 could not be any different especially as I was reaching the half century mark. I wanted something Unique! Could I have picked a better destination then the trekker/runner’s Holy Grail? A three month trip to Nepal, trekking the Everest Region up to Gyoko Peak which lies 5,357m above sea level. We looked at flights - finances - weather feasibilities, Miyuki carefully researched and planned every detail. th
January 4 2014 as a kind of birthday present, I was asked by Seth Wolpin , an American athlete, to join him and help with the scouting of the very first Kathmandu Ultra 50 km in Shivapuri, a peak which stands 2600m high. It was my very first Ultra trail as well! I became a regular at Himalayan Hash exploring trails I wouldn’t have found by myself.
Along the way I met and ran with Raj who with Narayan won their age categories in the Everest Marathon 2014 both passing through the finishing line holding hands.
Narayan and me The rest is history. Miyuki and I fell in love with the culture, the lifestyle, the food as well as the craziness of Kathmandu!
www.terrigaltrotters.com.au
We came back to Kathmandu in autumn 2014. We trekked Annapurna for 24 days without a guide or porter. We hiked the Thorong La a 5,416m high mountain pass,Poon Hill (3,210m) and Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m ) and we ran numerous trails. I then broke my own personal rule by not celebrating my 51st birthday in a different country but instead celebrating with Sudeep, Upendra and Raj who had successfully completed the “Road To Education” East West Nepal Run on th the 13 of December 2014 in 19 days, covering a distance of 1027km averaging ~54km per day crossing five development regions,10 administrative zones and 20 districts! The run raises money to help educating orphans from poor economic and social backgrounds.
st
Celebrating my 51 - Narayan, Upendra, Me, Raj and Sudeep
Yet the icing on the cake of those incredible 4 months was to run my first ever official Ultra trail…the North Face Kathmandu Ultra 50 km wearing the Terrigal Trotters Jersey !

A full moon and high humidity greeted runners on Sunday 4 th January 2015 for the running of the 14th Inaugural Round the Bay Classic. Five walkers headed off at 2.04am? followed by four runners at 4.00am, one at 4.45am and the remainder of the field took to the road at 5.00am. From the start Anthony Farrugia was on a mission to get back as quickly as possible, bypassing drink stops and maintaining a fast pace. He achieved his mission breaking the race record, previously held by Mark Warren, by around five minutes. The new record stands at 2hrs 23min 35sec. Likewise our very own world champion, Jessica Mitchell had a great run and broke the ladies record, previously held by Sharon Byrnes, by a staggering 18min 33sec, Jessica was also second outright. Melissa Robertson, the second lady across the line also broke the old record coming in in 2hrs 55min 56sec, beating her 2013 time by 36min 14sec. www.terrigaltrotters.com.au
Jessica’s new record is 2hrs 41min 17sec, beating her 2013 time by 35min 05sec. Neither ran in 2014. Katy McCaig was third lady home whilst Michael Miles and Chris Fuchs filled the minor placings in the men’s division. Thanks to Bev Andrews for once again being the timekeeper. Forty five walkers/runners completed the distance with seven (5 ladies and 2 men) achieving PBs and 10 contestants (8 men and 2 ladies) competing for the first time in this run. Thirty men and 15 ladies took part in the day, with Wayne Daley maintaining his unbroken record of completing every Round the Bay since its inception in 2002, an amazing record, congratulations. The next best is Steve Grey with 10 runs followed by Greg Tegart with 8 runs. Jo McCarthy carries the ladies record having completed 11 runs, Sonia White is still holding second place with 9 runs closely followed by Sue McBride with 8 runs and Sue Ingham with 7 runs. A great breakfast was had by all, thanks to Gwenda King and Pauline Anthony for preparing the food and Dennis Robertson for slaving over the hot BBQ all morning. After the Sydney marathon in 2013, I decided that I would like to do one marathon in every State and Territory in Australia. A list was drawn up with the dates of the major marathons in each area. Due to injuries, no marathons were done last year. In October last year we decided on a family holiday with another couple and we looked at events that we could run in. Hobart it was. We had never been to Tassie so it seemed perfect. Started training up the distance in training to prepare. Plane tickets booked, events fee paid and away we went. Got to Hobart on the Saturday and the marathon was on the Sunday. Everyone in our group did some distance so we were all involved. The marathon started at 6am and the weather was perfect. A cool 13 degrees and overcast. No wind. It starts and finishes at the Cadbury factory so the family was happy with that. Only a small event compared to the others I have done, it had a real good feel about it. My main concern was a niggling achilles injury that I have had off and on. We started off and the injury was looming but felt all good as the race progressed. The route is a double loop with some of the best scenery as it travels along the Derwent River with the mountains on the foreshore. The crowds were sparse as there were less than 300 entrants. The support amongst the runners though was excellent with other competitions giving words of encouragement. Due to the commitment of time required to run a marathon I decided to change the way I approach an event. Instead of worrying about going for a PB each time I thought it is best to just enjoy the occasion and look at the single most important factor of any event - finishing. So I came up with a mantra - "Completing, not Competing". This means that I would just go out and try to enjoy the marathon rather than be hell bent on a time (and being upset if I didn't get it). During the race I started out quite well. Was mindful of my speed and tried to keep it at a steady pace. Was tracking well and was averaging around 5:30 to 5:40 mins. Then around the 26k mark, my right hip decided that it was going to let me know it was not happy. The pain went from the hip to the knee.
www.terrigaltrotters.com.au
New strategy required. Run some and walk some. As the marathon went on the running seemed to be a getting more difficult. I ran till the pain got to a certain level and then walked till it subsided. A shame as the rest of me felt ok. So here is where the joy comes in. Walking along and seeing the other marathoners finished and walking back to their transport, a lot of them yelled out words of encouragement "Top effort mate", "Keep going buddy, not far to go", etc. This reinforced the respect that this distance has. Even the people that weren't running were positive. Coming into the finishing chute and the lack of spectators on the course was made up by the amount of people and cheering that the small crowd. It was the loudest of any event I have ever done. It's always emotional when you get the end and this made it more so. I ran down and clapped the crowd and saw my family, I yelled out to my kids to run with me the last 500 metres. The hip pain was not there. Finished in a time of 4:43 which is my least best time. A few years ago I would have been upset but the time didn't matter, it was the experience and I got the same medal as the person that came 10th. On a side note I saw one other Trotter out there blitzing it, Tom Robertson. I was able to yell out to him a few times and he did really well. I can highly recommend the Hobart Marathon and it's a beautiful place to boot. I now get to spend the next two weeks to enjoy this awesome island and start training for the Trail ANZAC 100k Challenge in April. Hoping the hip can mind its own business. John Love # 897
