I'm an architecture graduate from the University of Huddersfield. Originally I aam from Bulgaria, but I have been based in Huddersfield for almost 5 years. I completed the first part of the RIBA course in June 2013 and have worked in a couple of practices in the last year. I am interested in the psychology of spaces, sustainability, and graphic design.

Oh! and I really like fonts!

Now, I am looking to further my knowledge and experience by continuing my education and starting a MArch course. My previous experience has made me confident and outgoing, and therefore I feel that is a good time to take another step towards completing my studies.

NARRATIVE tom image shows the initial concept of concrete and timber cladding facades. However, this didn’t fit with the budget, so more vernacular materials were chosen: white render and natural stone as per the image below.

After calculation of the tender costings, the finishes were changed from concrete and timber cladding to more vernacular options such as natural stone and white render RIGHT: Location Plan BOTTOM: Section AA

1. Steel purlin over on padstones all to SE’s Details (1hr fire resisting) to support rafters 2. Warm roof construction: To comprise 100mm Kingspan Thermapitch TP10 between rafters fitted flush with underside of rafters to maintain a min 25mm min air gap beneath breather membrane. Underside of rafters to be underdrawn with 50mm Kingspan Thermapitch TP10, 12.5mm plasterboard and 3mm skim finish. Joints between insulation to be taped with self adhesive aluminium foil tape and perimeter edges sealed with mastic sealant.

3. Roof to comprise concrete interlocking tiles throughout, to be nailed to BS 5534 on to 38mm x 25 mm treated S.W battens on breathable membrane roofing felt on C24 grade 150mm max. deep x 50mm wide jack rafters at 35° pitch, spaced at upto 400mm max.centres.

4. Velux GPU 0050 rooflight 660mm x 1180mm with flashing kit to suit roof finish. Roof light to achieve elemental U-value of 1.3W/m²K. 5. Steel purlin over on padstones (1hr fire resisting) to support jack rafter head and roof truss 6. Staircase rising 2700mm comprising 14 No. risers @ 192.85mm rise each, and 13 No. treads (9 No. straight, 4 No. tapered at bottom) all with at least 235mm min. going.

7. Floor joists to be 241mm Silentfloor TJI 560 Series joists @ upto 400mm max. centres 8. Underside of joists to be finished in 12.5mm plasterboard and skim.

100mm min thick mineral wool insulation quilt (min density 10kg/m³) to be laid between and fitted tight to floor joists to provide sound reduction.

16 luxurious apartments sude hill mill refurbishment HOLMFIRTH, HUDDERSFIELD NARRATIVE NARRATIVE Currently the two mills in Sude Hill in Holmfirth are uninhabited and derelict.

The proposed development is for 16 luxurious apartments, underground carpark, gym, community garden decks at the back and offices for the client.

I started work in Acumen Architects just before the preparation of this project’s tender. My role in this project was to work with the client and various suppliers in order to design the interior of the apartments.

I have been working on the preparation of the tender and, especially, on gathering information and on the decisions to do with wall/ floor and ceiling finishes, kitchens, bathrooms and furniture.

I was responsible to convey the client’s vision on the apartments, communicate with the various suppliers and make sure everything we chose is withing budget.

Also, I have been dealing with the imaging on this project, creating a video of two of the biggest flats in the buildings (Apartments 9 & 10 as shaded on the floor plans); visuals of both the exterior, and the different options for the interior I have prepared following the client’s brief and the agreed budget.

GROVE LIBRARY REFURB TO A BITRO AND STUDENT STUDIOS LALA’S, BRADFORD NARRATIVE NARRATIVE The Grove Library Building in Bradford is situated in the city center. It is in an immediate proximity to both the Bradford College and University campuses. This situation in a way determines the proposed use of the refurbished library.

The listed building is to be turned into student flats and a bistro under the Lala’s Restaurants brand.

The development is to demolish the ground floor mezzanine floor which has been added to the building at a later date, in order to create a grand hall where the bistro is going to be situated.

The flats are to be positioned on the floors below and above without interfering with the original structure or the Grade II* listed facades of the Grove.

I was recently asked to meet with the client to have an initial discussion over the brief. After this meeting, I visited one of the existing Lala’s restaurants. Based on our conversation and my visit of the Huddersfield branch of Lala’s, I have created a programme to accommodate both the flats and bistro areas without the circulation through them clashing.

After another meeting with the client we refined the scheme and the development has gone into planning.

REAR EXTENSION AND REFURBISHMENT INTAKE LANE, BATLEY NARRATIVE NARRATIVE The existing dwelling at Intake Lane in Batley is a single storey bungalow with small area just under the roof, setting a basis for an upper floor.

The client currently lives across the road and had recently bought the property. He is wishing to extend and refurbish the dwelling and move in by the end of the year.

With the kitchen and dining room being at the back of the house. the client has requested the ‘front door‘ of the dwelling to be at the side elevation, in stead of the front. Therefore two bay windows give the front facade character, adding extra space to the two bedrooms.

The brief for this project requires the new proposal to accommodate the client’s two grandchildren when visiting, as well as to accommodate the whole dwelling for a wheelchair.

The proposal is for a two storey rear extension, requiring a new roof and providing two extra bedrooms, a second lounge on the upper floor, an extended kitchen and a new dining area.

The proposal has required to demolish the existing garage behind the dwelling. However, the excess material had been used for the new built, and two parking spaces have been provided at the front garden of the property.

After destroying the garage and extending the rear of the house, the work will open the dwelling to the new patio at the back, leading to the garden. The big windows and Juliette balcony on the upper floor create a feature elevation.

NARRATIVE

The proposal is for a complex with a religious monument which would represent the most popular beliefs in Vietnam: Animism, Taoism and Buddhism. The purpose of the building is to raise awareness of traditions which have been neglected due to recent fast development of the country. The place will offer locals to go back to their roots and explore their origins, and for youths to learn about their ancestors and for to tourists to discover the intricate details around the mysticism of the religions without disturbing

The complex includes another building (south wing) where activities typical to each religion are practiced: yoga, tai chi, calligraphy and meditation have separate cells, specially tailored to the specific traits to each activity.

Furthermore, merchandise pods are provided for street sellers to rent and accommodation for the staff and few visitors to stay in are introduced. This way through rent and sustainable recycling strategies, the building is able to support itself completely on its own.

SECTION A-A

The site is situated in one of the biggest parks in the city. The 23/9 park is a narrow strip of vegetation divided in three by some of the bigger boulevards. The proposal is placed in the first strip, in close proximity to the Ben Thanh Market.

Natural ventilation provided by gaps between the rammed earth walls and the roof. Protection from insects and privacy are provided by bamboo shutters.

The thick sculptural walls allow furniture to be featured inside them sparing space and making up fot what they take with their thickness (450mm1000mm). Shelves and seating are easily carved in.

Areas are easily differentiated through change of levels.

Bamboo roof covered by aluminium sheets which protect it from rain and moisture. Robust flexible and available, bamboo is a popular material in Vietnam.

Lamboo beams introduce flexibility to the structure. They are strong and avail-able as bamboo farms are plenty in the country.

Rammed earth walls are protected by spanning roofs which dont allow rain to fall dierectly on the stone surface which would geopardise its entity

ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECT SECTION B-B The thickness of the rammed earth walls allows heat to be kept inside or in the materal and slowly released as the tem-perature changes. Therefore, no fluctuations are allowed and heat is kept outside

Long thin punctures through the wall allow hot air risen up to move through the building. Double height spaces provide the inhabited areas to be kept cool.

The outside garden offers seating and shade, where passers by can explore the freze.

The hammam consists of three rooms which accommodate different cleansing procedures: starting with aa cold, to a warm and lastly a hot one.

NARRATIVE The new proposal is for a spa and leisure centre in Bradford. It is inspired by the middle Eastern cosmetic traditions. Henna is an art practiced by women when parts of the body are painted with different patterns.

A hammam is a sequence of spalike places where different procedures are executed. The body is washed, exfoliated and cleansed with organic oils and crystals.

SECTION A-A

The proposal is situated in the Bradford city park, with a view of the Bradford Mirror pool. It is surrounded by several patches of green spaces and is in a pedestrian area.

The landscape around the site is developed in a way to create a slope between it and a busy road on an upper level south from the city park. The site is in one of the busiest and most popular zones of the area. It is full of commercial buildings with shops, cafes and restaurants. It is currently a popular destination for the Bradford citizens. A place for rest and entertainment.

After the procedures have taken place and one is finished using the pool, they can wander into the courtyard garden or the tea room. The tea room is the last event of the If not they can take their time in the tea room before they return to the changing room. This “break“ gives the body a chance to re-adjust.

After one is done with their procedures they can cool down in the pool which is the lowest space in the sequence. Completely underground, the pool represents the final stage of cleanse; the last dark point before the visitors starts emerging back from the ground and into the light through the courtyard garden or the tearoom. The controlled natural light allows visibility but is soft and mellow.

500 WORDS OF DESIGN is an independent student fanzine dealing with design and its basis.

The initial idea of the small newspaper is to establish the common grounds between different areas of design and unite students from different design courses around the idea that design is similar on every floor of the department, and its basis are common for the obvious sister’s subjects like achitecture and interior design but with fashion, cinema, photography, product and transport design, Since September 2013 a group of about ten students has been developing different subjects and preparing an issue for each term of the academic year. Each issue has an accompanying installation, designed and prepared by a special group of our team, using recycled materials from previous projects.

At the same time, each issue focuses on a subject that could be interpreted in various ways. Further, each author takes a turn to share their thoughts on the subjects in the constraints of 500 words, hence the title.

From what makes good design, to design abroad and our interpretation to what it is that form actually follows, we have developed so much that the last of our issues made it to China, along with the final year’s trip abroad.

Last but not least, my main responsibilities towards the fanzine include editing, organization and graphic design, as well as some less exciting activities like promotion, maintaining communication with the staff, funding and budget handling.
