Prepared and frosted cakes required in some classes. Most supplies included. FIBER ARTS: Felting with Muslin........................................ Instructor: Magi Shapiro ‘Paint’ a picture or design on ordinary muslin by punching wool into it with felting needles. When done, student will have completed a work of art to enjoy or to use as part of a bigger project, such as a pillow! CERAMICS: Beginning Wheel Throwing..................Instructor: Jane Hendley Learn how to create basic pottery forms, such as a cup, bowl and plate using a potter’s wheel. This class covers techniques such as centering and throwing a cylinder, while emphasizing both function and aesthetics. Winter Session: Mondays, January 5 – March 23 (no class 1/19 or 2/16) from 6-8:30pm Spring Session: Mondays, April 6 – June 15 (no class 5/25) from 6-8:30pm Cost: $220, plus $35 materials fee

Create a light summer scarf using the Nuno Felting technique on plain, ordinary cheesecloth. Choose soft, colored wool fibers, yarns and curly wool locks to lay out your unique design then bind the wools together with the cheesecloth into a single textile. Take home a unique spring creation to wear over and over again. Please note: This physically active workshop requires students to stand for a lengthy time. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Students will be dealing with soapy water and long periods of standing. Spring Session: Saturday, May 16 from 10am-4pm Cost; $65, plus $30 materials fee

Felted Winter Acorns................................... Instructor: Tonya Utkina Create acorns using an assortment of wool fibers in different colors. Learn how to wet felt wool balls and how to attach them to real acorn tops. Felted acorns are great for home décor or as small gifts for loved ones. Instructor: Tonya Utkina Learn how to wet felt wool to create beads in various shapes such as round, oval, flat disk, etc. and then assemble your own necklace, earrings or bracelet. Tie-Dyeing with Acrylics................. Instructor: Emily Ellingsworth

Create one-of-a-kind garments or fabrics using various tying, folding, dripping, dunking, and painting techniques. Bring in white, light, or stained clothing or fabrics and give them new life. Use various ties and folds to manipulate and control the pigments. Create unique colors and visual textures you can’t get from a kit. This class is for the bold as you never know how your creations will turn out. Take works home wet with directions on heat-setting. Spring Session: Saturday, May 9 from 1-5pm Cost: $45, plus $30 materials fee plus students bring white or light fabrics or garments (bring more than you think you’ll need) and white on white print fabrics (optional).

CONFECTIONARY ARTS: Cake Decorating & Design..........................Instructor: Ann Spark Learn basic skills in the confectionary arts while designing and decorating cakes. Prepare, frost, and decorate cakes with a variety of techniques using buttercream icing. Round, star, leaf, and specialty tips will be used to create borders, flowers, and unique seasonal and special occasion decorations for each cake. Students need to bring an unfrosted cake to the second class and a frosted cake (homemade or store bought) to the last class. Most supplies included. Learn to use long pine needles, thread, and sewing needles to create an amazing coiled basket that is a true work of art. Different methods to start a basket, how to incorporate simple designs and a variety of stitches will be discussed from a simple stitch to a V-stitch to back stitch. Charming Combo.............................................. Instructor: Pat Whitlow This project will demonstrate how to make a charm bracelet using glass bead charms made by students, with an extension that will turn it into a necklace. Experience helpful, but the instructor will demonstrate skills necessary to make this versatile piece of jewelry. Basic Kumihimo.................................................. Instructor: Pat Whitlow Learn the fun art of kumihimo cord braiding. No jewelry experience necessary. Precious Metal Clay & Molds.............. Instructor: Celeste Miller

Learn how to make molds using RTV and then “cast” beautiful fine silver (99.9%) pendants, earrings, and/or charms using Precious Metal Clay (PMC). PMC is a clay-like material containing silver powder and a non-toxic binding material. Once the PMC is kiln fired, a 99.9% silver piece is produced. Feel free to bring interesting decorative buttons or pieces of jewelry to experiment with. Instructor will bring all materials. No experience required! Smashing Pots! Pique-Assiette Mosaics......................... ................................................................................... Instructor: Emily Ellingsworth Learn how to make a mosaic image from start to finish using the pique-assiette style. Pique-Assiette mosaics are created using broken ceramics and found objects. Students will learn to design, layout, set, and grout a small mosaic for in-home décor. Mosaic Garden Stone...............................Instructor: Colleen Renaye

Create an original work of art to spice up your outdoor space or to act as a memorial for a pet or loved one in this fun mosaic workshop. Students will learn how to layout their own personal design using concrete grout for weather proofing. Just bring your own stone and the instructor provides the rest! Six String Primer – The Advancing Guitarist (Part 2)................................................................. Instructor: Thomas Wakefield

Continue the study of the guitar from Part 1 with a recap of mapping melodies and the C-A-G-E-D chord system. The construction of scales and arpeggios are presented in conjunction with basic chord formations beyond open chords. The relationships of scales used for melodies and improvisations, and moveable major, minor, and 7th chord forms is the focus of this session. Scales presented include: Major Scale; the Major & Minor Pentatonic, and the Blues Scale. This session will end with students creating a basic blues chord progression, playing a simple melody with it, and an introduction to improvisation. This course is designed for adults who have completed Primer 1 and are on the level of late beginner/early intermediate guitar with a rudimentary knowledge of reading standard notation and chord symbols. Uke-A-Rama – Intro to the Ukulele...................................... .................................................................................... Instructor: Thomas Wakefield “Uke can do it!” Welcome to the fun, highly portable, and easily accessible world of the ukulele. Journey through the history and culture of the uke and basic musicanship and techniques for creating music with this fantastic instrument. Basic chord shapes and strumming, as well as melodic single note playing will be covered. A basic knowledge of music reading will be helpful but not necessary. Jump start your musical pursuites while avoiding bad habits and pitfalls beginners often fall prey to. Nature Photography......................................Instructor: Victoria Dye Learn the basics of nature photography with lecture and hands on shooting in the field. We’ll start in the morning with a lecture on the basics including techniques for shooting in a variety of nature situations, what equipment to use, and when to catch the best light. Then we’ll head to Maymont for hands-on practice in the afternoon. This class proves to be fun and exciting and a great way to get into the field. All levels are welcome! Students must provide own transportation to and from sites. Spring Session: Friday, May 15 from 9:30-4pm (Rain Date: Sunday, May 17) Location: Students will meet at CACGA from 9:30am—12pm and then, after a lunch break, meet again at 1:30pm at Maymont Park for field session. Cost: $120, plus student must bring their camera, charged batteries, and owner’s manual. Also bring the following if you have them: wide to medium angle lenses, tripod, and any filters.

Learn how to edit and digitally manipulate your photographs in this enjoyable and comprehensive Photoshop course. Whether you are using Adobe Elements or Adobe CS, the instructor will guide you in developing control and confidence in making your photographs uniquely your own. If you have a Photoshop program on your own laptop you are encouraged to bring your laptop to class and learn on the program you will be working with most. No previous experience necessary. Instructor: Janine Turner This is an advanced level class for those already familiar with Photoshop. We will be learning unique special effects to create unusual and interesting imagery from our photographs. Are you interested in hand tinting a black and white photograph? Have you ever wondered how to create a rain drop on a flower petal? These techniques and many others will be covered in this class. We will be working exclusively with layers, therefore you must have previous experience working with layers or have already taken the class “Photoshop A-Z.” The class will be taught on both Photoshop CS and Photoshop Elements. If you have a Photoshop program on your own laptop, you are encouraged to bring it to class and learn on the program you will be working with most. Basic Digital Photography................ Instructor: Arthur Stephens

Learn about aperture and shutter functions and how ISO affects exposure. Compositional elements and guidelines are offered to improve images. This class covers variations in different focal length lenses and which lenses to use to achieve desired results. Students will also learn how to best use their camera’s built in flash. Students are encouraged to have a digital SLR camera with interchangeable lenses for this class. Cell phone photography has the potential to be much more than point & shoot! Learn to create artistic images using your smart phone. Workshop will discuss going beyond the basic snapshot and will encourage students to refine their aesthetic and technical photography skills by pushing the boundaries of composition and design. The workshop will focus on photo editing using one iPhone or iPad Apple application (app) including filters, basic photo adjustment tools, masking, cloning, watermarks, etc. Students will also learn how to apply their new photography to social media like Facebook and Twitter. VISUAL ARTS: Basic Drawing....................................................Instructor: Jan Shropshire Learn how to interpret and record objects in a realistic manner. How Your Digital Camera Works.......Instructor: Arthur Stephens

Learn how to use your digital camera properly without relying on the automatic setting to know what to do. This workshop provides a comprehensive overview on all the operations of your digital SLR camera. Cameras with interchangeable lenses are preferred for this course, but not required. Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful abstract images by drawing simple receptive patterns. The drawings are done on small paper ‘tiles’ using ink pens. This class is for anyone that thinks they can’t draw or doesn’t feel they are creative but would like to be. It’s also for artists that would like to incorporate an easy way to add patterns to their work. This class will teach you the basic principals. If you can draw a line and a circle, you can create unlimited designs. This class teaches the importance of enjoying the artistic process and can be very relaxing. Indulge your inner artist with this vibrant and beautiful medium! Beginner and experienced painters alike will enjoy drawing and painting with pastels from photographs or still life. Pastels are a dry form of pure pigment mixed with a binder to hold the color together. They offer the same bold color as oil paints minus the liquid and the mess! Create dynamic works of art using melted wax as you explore encaustic painting, a process that produces impressive results with luminous and jewel-like surfaces and textures. Beginners as well as working artists are welcome! Demonstrations and experimentation allow students to learn techniques such as melting through, line and edge, transfers, and texture and collage. Students can choose to practice all of these methods or just the ones that interest them. At the end of the workshop, student will be familiar with a range of techniques which they can use later to develop new work. Paint, equipment, tools and small practice panels will be supplied. WOOD CARVING: NEW! Carving A Whimsical Bark House...... Instructor: Kathy Overcash

In this class, learn how to carve a wall hung whimsical house. This is a simplified version of carving whimsical houses and great for beginners. The houses will be carved from one piece of cottonwood bark. Each house will be between 5 to 7 inches tall. Once your house is finished, you can proudly hang it on the wall or an ornamental hanger. This project is designed for beginner and intermediate woodcarvers. Each house blank will be rouged out with the initial house layout, roof line, windows, doors, foundation and chimney. Use various carving tools, primarily u-gouges and v-tools If you have your own carving tools, bring them. If not, carving tools will be available for use during the class. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.* All registrations must be accompanied by full payment. Payment may be in the form of a check or as a charge to a MasterCard or VISA. All checks should be made out to The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen (CACGA). Please use this form when registering. If you choose to pay by check and your check is dishonored, you agree to pay a service fee of $35 or any higher amount allowed by law, and we may electronically debit or draft your account for this fee. Also, if your check is returned for insufficient or uncollected funds, your check may be electronically re-presented for payment.

Cancellation of classes by CACGA Policy: If an insufficient number of registrations are received for any individual class a week before the class is to begin, the class will be canceled. Therefore, it is important to register early. If cancellation occurs, a full refund will be processed for those currently registered in the class. Online registration will be refunded by check. Cancellation by student Cancellations will be accepted by phone at 804-261-ARTS (2787). Cancellations received seven days or more prior to the first class will receive a 50% refund of the class fees. Cancellations received less than seven days prior to the first class will not receive a refund.
