The Friendly Face Behind “Good Morning Rio Vista!”
ASB Vice President, Peter Zucha, reading the daily announcements in the attendance office.
Every day at school you hear “Good Morning Rio Vista!” on the announcements, but do you ever wonder who is on the other side of the loudspeaker? The voice of Rio Vista High School is Peter Zucha (senior). He was given the job as the morning announcer because he was voted the ASB Vice-President. Peter says the best part of being the morning announcer is that sometimes he might say something random and it surprises people. On

the contrary, the worst part of being the announcer is that every morning has to say the Pledge of Allegiance and after doing it every day, it does get boring. When Peter is absent Mrs. Sarah usually substitutes for him. In order to broadcast throughout the school he needs to dial a code on the outgoing phone. Outside the school Peter likes to fly airplanes on the weekend, hang out with his friends, play Madden 17, and enjoys watching and playing sports (even though he’s terrible at football, he’s not bad at golf). He wants to become a pilot for a big company when he’s older. He was inspired by his dad who is also a pilot but Peter would like to be more than what his dad was. He would like to go to college for two years then transfer to a 4 year Aeronautics Aerospace Program. “Flying is a big passion I have,” he added. By: Leslie Diaz
Ram’s Baseball Shut Out Delta 2-0 at Raley Field The Rams played their fourth straight year at Raley field in Sacramento where the Giants minor league team plays. It has been a new addition for the Delta-Rio Vista rivalry. The team started the game off with a solid couple of hits but couldn’t seem to score. They continued to keep getting more and more hits but some base running errors caused a few runs to

slip through our hands. The young freshman, Ethan Medders, planned on only throwing a couple of innings but continued dealing all the way until the last inning. “I was nervous playing at Raley Field at first but once we got going everything fell into place,” commented Ethan. The Rams led off with Jayden Lira in the top of the seventh inning and he got a six pitch followed by Logan Boothe’s single to right field. After scoring Jayden, he stole second base. Then the Saints intentionally walked Ryan Mackey and with 1 out and runners on first and third Hunter Apple comes up and gets a base knock to score Logan, which put the Rams up 2-0. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Ethan Medders with his “no hitter” still intact, continued to shut down Delta. With 2 outs, 2 balls and 2 strikes the Delta batter pops up a fly ball to the shortstop and Hunter makes the play and the freshmen Ethan pulls off the NO HITTER! By: Ryan Mackey

Chesnut Brings Fun to Agriculture Science Ms.Chesnut is from Clarksburg. She graduated from Delta High School and the University of Nevada, Reno. She earned a B.S. in Agricultural Science and a B.S. in Rangeland Wildlife Ecology and Management. She teaches Ag Biology, Ag Earth Science and Ag Mechanics this year at RVHS. Before she started teaching she was a mechanical bull operator, irrigation technician and biochemical engineering tech for stem cell research. She was inspired to teach by her high school agriculture teacher, Mrs.Spears at Delta High School. Ms. Chesnut would always go back to the school after she graduated to help out at the fair. Mrs. Spears told her one day, “you have been helping at the high school since you were in 6th grade, you can back a trailer, barbeque and braid hair. Why not teach ag?” This is Ms.Chesnut’s first year teaching at Rio Vista High School, but she did help teach at other schools. She was part-time assistant teacher at the Reno Academy of Arts (Careers & Technology) and helped build their agriculture program. She loves teaching and wants
to teach Advanced Animal Science or Rangeland and Wildlife in the future. Her dream job is to travel the country showing cattle. Ms. Chesnut lives in the country outside Clarksburg and has two cats, Pandora and Fat Shawn; one dog, Colossus; a chicken named Lucy and 14 fish. When she’s not teaching, Ms.Chesnut likes to relax, travel, and watch football. Over spring break she is going enjoy some time off in Monterey. By: Robert Price

painted all orange! I noticed some people laugh at these pieces, but I found it really beautiful the way certain colors change mood. Many noticeable pieces I saw at the museum were by such artists as: Ellsworth Kelly, William Carter, Jackson Pollock, and many more. If you are interested in art or just strange sights I would highly suggest visiting the SFMOMA.

On the 28th of February the AP Art department took a trip to the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. After getting Starbucks and conversing about the artists we had researched, we went in. Right when you walk in there are these huge white ceilings and large white walls, almost like a blank canvas. Each floor that you visited was a different mood that the artists were trying to convey. The seventh floor was the scariest. Here there was a movie playing called The Absence of Time which was projected on multiple screens in this dark musty room with a moving wooden sculpture in the middle that made creaking noises like an old house at night. After being severely tripped out I went down a few floors where somehow I ran into the pop art section and was treated with some pieces by Andy Warhol. After that I ventured up to floor 4 which was mainly filled with large canvases painted one color. Like it would just be a huge frame

Swim Team Making a Splash The RVHS Swim Team has 18 swimmers this year (ten boys and eight girls). 13 of the swimmers returned from last year and two of the swimmers are new. Coach Toni Tucker is hoping some of the girls will make it to Sections this year. “The team has a well-rounded group of swimmers willing to compete in races we need to win even if it’s not their favorite race,” said Coach Tucker. The girls’ biggest rival in the league is Highlands and the boys’ is Bradshaw Christian. Coach Tucker said the most exciting thing about this sport as a coach is “seeing swimmers drop their times, getting faster every swim meet, and seeing those who have never completed before learn the strokes and become confident swimmers.” As a swimmer, it’s important that they push themselves to get a faster time and have their teammates encourage
them. “Though swimming is like an individual sport, it’s exciting because they have a team to help push them,” Coach Tucket said. “One of the great things about swimming is the connection you make with other swimmers; you become a family,” she added. The girls team participated in Rio Linda Relays, a meet that was made up of 8 schools from the Sacramento area. Most of these schools have at least 50 team members and the Rio Vista girls placed 4th overall. Their fastest race was the 200 backstroke relay where they placed 3rd. “These girls are awesome!” added Coach Tucker. Rio Vista High School looks forward to watching the swim team improve and compete the rest of the season. Come down to the pool and watch a meet. Swimming is an exciting sport to watch! Enjoying the fresh air out on the links are Golf Team members Blaine Dart and Tommy Campbell.
The Rio Vista High School Golf Team is fortunate to have a decent number of players on the team with eight boys and two girls. The golf team coach is Mr.Fonseca, also known as the P.E teacher. He has had experience coaching golf for 3 years at RVHS. His favorite thing about coaching the team is getting out in the fresh air, watching people get better, and visiting other golf courses. Golf used to be a game only for the wealthy, but now golf is for everyone and it is a good way to spend time with other people. Mr. Fonseca’s point of view on golf is that it combines a variety of skills such
as: physical, mental, and decision making. Mr. Fonseca wished to congratulate Tommy Campbell who qualified for sections last season, and Blaine Dart who finished with the top score during the match with Golden Sierra. The whole team has golf shoes and white polos to look like real golfers. Fonseca expects his team to compete all season with the best play possible in golf. By: Leslie Diaz

with the Beast. The overall movie was just fantastic. The movie is rated PG, but it isn’t that bad in my opinion. I recommend everyone go and see this movie. It is like the original but slightly different. It was definitely worth the money and the drive to see this movie. Rate 5 out of 5.

Tips for Summer Job Interviews

April 27-28 @ RVHS
I recently went to the movies with my family and saw Beauty and the Beast. Emma Watson played Belle and Dan Stevens played the Beast. Since this is a remake of the original animated Beauty and the Beast, I thought it was a good movie. There is a lot of humor in the movie and the singing is just breathtaking. One of the best highlights I saw was when Belle goes and dances

Bug Cupcakes
Cupcake papers 1 Box Cake Mix and ingredients as required by mix Cool Whip Topping or frosting Licorice Gumdrops or any small pieces of candy for any decorations wanted DIRECTIONS:
Follow the directions to make the cupcakes on the cake mix package. Fill the cupcake papers to 2/3 full to ensure a rounded top on each cupcake. Bake cupcakes according to cake mix directions and cool. After cupcakes have cooled, carefully cut the rounded top off the cupcake at the paper’s edge. Lightly brush-off the new top part of the original cupcake to remove any loose crumbs. Frost with the Cool Whip or desired frosting. Place one grumdrop on the edge of the frosted cupcake for the bug’s head. To arrange the wings, take the halves that you set aside and make one set of pointed edges touch the gumdrop while separating the other part of the halves approximately 1 1/2 inches apart. Carefully press the wings into the frosting. Push two cut pieces of licorice into the frosting by the gumdrop to form the antennas. Frost the wings and decorate as desired.
As the end of the year quickly approaches, many students will be busy searching for summer employment. Here are some tips you may find useful to help you land that job! How to prepare for an interview: • Research the company and industry online. • Find out three key things about the company. • Confirm the date, time, address, and name of the person giving the interview. • Check directions on how to get to the location (if out of Rio Vista). • Keep your resume to one page. • Be ready to explain your qualifications. • Ask questions about responsibilities and training. Things never to do: • Never be late! Arrive at least 15 minutes early. • Never talk negatively about any employer. • Never chew gum in an interview • Never wear perfume or cologne. • Never take a friend with you to a job interview. If you need someone to drive you, then ask them to wait in the car or drop you off. • Keep your resume to one page. • Never lie on your application or resume. Your appearance and communication: • Always be neat, clean, and appropriately dressed. • Lay out the clothing you plan to wear to the interview. • Don’t sit funny, move around, or hide your hands. • Smile, face the interviewer, relax, make eye contact. • Walk confidently and shake hands. • Speak clearly-don’t mumble or use slang. • Be well mannered. Things to remember: • Present your experience, skills, and accomplishments. • Get to the point. KISS (keep it simple speaker). • Know your positives as well as your negatives. • Figure how to turn your negatives into positives. After the interview • Analyze what you did right and mistakes you might have made. • Send a brief “thank you” letter or email to the interviewer that day. • Take a deep breath because it is over. The film adds small stories about the subject, like how certain video games affect our behavior, or how using a phone too often may affect on how you do in school; things like that. The film is trying to point out that too much
technology can be bad in our lives. The film also points out that teens get distracted in school with electronic devices, and we should have time away from technology and do something that doesn’t mess with our education time. Overall this film did something that made it feel interesting. By: Jose Silva

March 29th’s WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) Visiting Committee Progress Report was a great success. The team met with students, teachers, and administrators and also visited many classrooms. Rio Vista High School received many commendations including: successful implementation of the block schedule, the writing center, and Algebra support classes. Staff were praised for being AVID trained, hosting parent nights, and providing engaging classroom activities. It was recommended that RVHS begin articulation with their middle school. Most importantly, though, members of the Visiting Committee stated that they saw a positive school culture where all stakeholders help students succeed.

Radio Rio Launches Streaming Milestone reached as station’s technical upgrade nears completion KRVH continues its progress toward strength and stability with the announcement today of high-definition internet streaming of the Radio Rio broadcast signal. Listeners can find new service at web address http://stream.krvh. org. Radio consultant Gordon Whiting said the entire upgrade
process was on track. “We’ve replaced some aging gear, configured new software and taken advantage of recent innovations in digital signal processing. Listener should notice a higher quality sound as the dial into Radio Rio on their smartphones and computers.” He also noted the fact that most students
don’t have radios, but they do have cell phones. “Now the young folks who program Radio Rio can actually hear their own station,” he said. Listeners are encouraged to try the new streaming service and report any issues to the team at studio@krvh.org. “It would help tremendously if people would log on
and listen for at least a few minutes. We can only finish stress-testing if a fair number of connections are active simultaneously.’’ The current streaming setup will support up to 5000 listeners, worldwide. Ongoing updates and bulletins on the Radio Rio upgrade project can be found at the www.krvh.club

day of the competition came, the nerves were killing me. Predictably, we did not make it to the second round that year or the two years that followed. This year, as a senior and with more experience, I was given another opportunity to go to the competition. I chose to perform a monologue from King Henry VI, part III as Queen Margaret. With the help of my peers and the immeasurable support and guidance from Mrs. Surla, I managed to make it to the coveted final round. Though I did not place, I was part of the select group of students that were asked to perform in the final round, beating out students from private performing arts schools.
