Class of 2021 Overcomes Adversity and Embraces Their #LEGENDARY Status By: Marisol Segoviano-Tavares, Staff Writer
T
hroughout our past four years of high school experience we have had some incredible moments as the Senior Class of 2021. High school has been like a roller coaster, sometimes there’s good days and others are not so good but we have been able to get through this together. The class of 2021 has had the pleasure to be with one another to support all of our journeys. Our memories have grown up until our last year of high school. All of the seniors will carry a little piece
of their memories with them, no matter what we head for. We had some fun games to attend, awards, clubs, and a lot more extraordinary events for remembrance. Those memories will all be appreciated when we move a little closer to achieving our goals. When we first entered the Rio Vista High School territory as a freshman class, we never thought that these four years would go by so quickly. We came to this school not knowing what we would grow up to be. All of us had different challenges and ob-
stacles thrown at us on our path,s but thankfully we are closer each day to leaving the hard times behind us as wecelebrate what we have accomplished. We as seniors walking down on our graduation day will be a class who has left our mark at our school. All seniors have done a lot to be able to graduate and explore the goodness and positivity out of it all. Every ending will be a new beginning for the Senior Class of 2021.

WHO IS MOST LIKELY TO COME BACK TO AT RVHS?
DAVID FORBES: Josie Preston, PE teacher like Mr. Fonseca freshman year. TAURUS BYERS: I don’t know who would do that to themselves. JESSA MAJORS: I think Lily Griffin would come back and teach. PRINCIPAL VICTORIA TURK
message to my Seniors On March 13, 2020 RVHS was closed due to Covid 19. I know many of you, like me, thought we were just receiving an extra week at Spring Break. Instead you were catapulted into the global pandemic. Over the summer of 2020 I witnessed your slow realization that your senior year would not be what you dreamt. In August, I saw the hope of returning in cohorts crushed. In November, I saw your hope for a semblance of a senior year disappear, and finally in March I saw you desperately reach for a few weeks of your senior year. And you have embraced these last weeks. You turned RVHS Red and you burned the worst of 2020. You gathered together and sparked those friendships again. You danced at the prom. You competed in intramurals and gave alumni and community members games to remember. You had spirit weeks. You played spring sports. You created a Spring Rally week like no other. And the best is still to come. You could have focused on what you lost this year. Instead you chose to celebrate your senior year. And your celebration has carried over to underclassmen, parents, community, teachers and yes, myself. On the darkest of days you were there for me. Whether it was a smile, a “miss you Turk”, a well disguised hug....you were there! You kept me going, you made the difference, you are the true heroes of this pandemic, In the future when you remember back to this event I hope you will remember a quote from my favorite athletic coach. Vince Lombardi said: “It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up.” Know that every single day I witnessed you getting up to fight the fight. I saw your character and your integrity accept the challenge daily and succeed. I was proud of you Every class is special to me and remembered in different ways. I think it’ safe to say, however, that the Class of 2021 has stolen a special place in my heart. A bond I will always remember and treasure. You are legendary. It has been an honor to be your principal.

2020-21 ASB Officers
RIO VISTA HIGH SCHOOL
Lily Griffin | ASB President
I ran for ASB President my senior year because I knew I wanted to be a leader and lead my example. Since Covid tried to ruin our senior year, I wanted to change that and make it the best year for the seniors. It was challenged at times, but the ASB officers pushed through it and we gave the school a chance to show their pride. Being the ASB president taught me way more than just being a “president.” It taught me how to communicate with my mentors and having a close bond with them, and the students at the school. This is the best experience I have had while attending the high school. If I can say one thing about being involved, do it! You don’t know what could happen during your senior year, so do it now, be involved!

I ran for ASB this year because I wanted to a part of helping make our senior year as normal as possible for all of us. This was a really special year for all of us and I wanted to work with my peers to make it the best it could possibly be! I got to work with other ASB members to create fun events and activities for everyone which was truly an awesome exprience to be apart of! We all really connected and we’re able to collaborate on a bunch of ideas, it felt good to be able to bring a little extra excitement to our senior year!! :)

Josie Preston | ASB Treasurer I originally ran for ASB this year because we didn’t know when or how we could go back to school, especially it being my senior year I didn’t want to miss out an opportunity. I feel as an ASB officer you have a chance to bring something to the school and be involved. Not only was I the treasurer and was involved in our schools money/ budget somewhat, but all of our ASB officers all stayed connected with Mrs. Turk and Ms. Gornto throughout these crazy times to bring fun things to our school this year. By being in ASB I have been able to conect with my mentors even better than before. And especially for our last year in high school, this years ASB officers were definitely the best it could have been despite what Covid brought us this year.

The reason why I ran for ASB this year was because it was my senior year and I wanted to be a part of the school. I wanted to work with my peers to make our last year and this crazy year for everyone a great one. The experience that I got out of being ASB Secretary was being able to work well with my fellow ASB officers when it came to doing things for the school. I gained knowledge on how to be a part of group meetings and being comfortable with voicing my opinion. I also got the opportunity to be closer to some of the staff by working on projects together.

Volleyball Intramurals: when school felt “normal” again By: Alex Tejeda

veryone has their different opinions about high school depending on their experiences. One thing we can all agree on is that sports is a key part of the overall high school experience. Unfortunately, this year’s athletes were unable to play any fall or winter sports which included the likes of football, soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Our wonderful principal and athletic director, Mrs. Turk and Mrs. Gomes, tried everything they could to get our athletes a season of play but ultimately couldn’t escape those COVID protocols. Many seniors were looking forward to playing their favorite sports with all their friends and their prided senior nights, were ultimately left with nothing. Luckily, with the introduction of the hybrid cohort system, we were able to give the volleyball teams a sense of play with each other. Principal Mrs. Turk was able to organize an intramural system where the volleyball players were able to get together and play against groups of current and past teachers as well as some staff members. On April 19 and 21, what would’ve been this year’s varsity team, Josie Preston, Jessica Mingay, Marivella Torres, Caroline Upham, Greta Dole, Jenna Holden, Maia Stone, and Bella and Sophia Saldana, along with Mrs. Turk, were able to organize tournament style round of games with other students and even our local police department joined in. “To be able to play at least one game, even if it wasn’t a normal one, was such a fun experience and were so lucky we have the amazing staff we do to give us the closest thing to a senior season as we could,” senior Caroline Upham, who’s played volley-

ball since her freshman year is more than appreciative to the people who were able to let her team play. Unfortunately we can’t stay an age forever. The COVID-19 virus robbed this year’s seniors of what they may argue, their most important year of sports. Thankful for their coaches who gave them a makeshift senior night with flowers and balloons after their last practice after finding out a volleyball season would not be happening this year. “We didn’t have our families there but just the thought of having that little recognition with your team meant more to us than luann will ever know,” is all the words senior Josie Preston could put

together to thank her coach for all of her efforts in making this squads senior experience as great as possible. This collective group of seniors would like to thank everyone who helped make their unique senior year memorable and as special as possible for their support and efforts, “We thank and appreciate you for everything you all have done for each one of us!”

How’s life up in Iceland? I know you’re busy researching renewable energy and that’s super important, but I’m so sad you missed the best night ever! So many people from our class showed up for the reunion at the Delta Diamond and it was amazing! Of course, Josie Preston was the first to show up. She was ripped, she is now a bodybuilder and plays volleyball for UCLA. Followed right behind her was Tyler Abood and Wyatt Hagan, they just came back from a tour in Europe with their band. Tyler still carries his guitar everywhere. I think the best entrances were James Blake and Jose Ernest Alex Del Rosario, the Army dropped them off from a plane and they parachuted down. Once the party started, Trevor Gomes decided to show up late, what a shocker. He still has his usual bed head from partying in Chico after he graduated six years ago. Of course Tuck Forbes’ suit was the brightest, flashiest and most colorful. We would expect nothing else. Seth Mandujan finally chopped off his man bun, we would never think he would do that! Jaqueline Leal wore her Harvard Alumni sweatshirt. She went to grad school there after gradutating from Cal Poly with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. You know she’s going to cure cancer one day. After gathering around and catching up, dinner started. Yalicza Fernandez and her staff made the dinner for us because she is now a chef, she made us the best dinner ever! During dinner, I saw Chris Nunes get up and go outside. Aidan Frisbie followed him and saw him hunting ducks in the vineyards and since Aidan is a Fish and Game warden he had to fine him because it’s illegal. Chris’s excuse for hunting during the reunion was because he didn’t get to that morning because he and Rex Torres were out hittin’ on moms at a grocery store. Bryan Rish was going around the table filming everyone for a documentary he was making about our class. He has now directed six movies, a couple co-directing with Steven Spielburg. Right before dinner was over, Jacob Awender was showing us his wrestling moves that he performed during his WWE match he had the night before. Mason Cobb was absolutely yatted from neck to toe and he upgraded his Challenger to a Hellcat Redeye. And of course, Zach Davi just got back from the gym wearing his “white beater”. After dinner was over, the dance party started. Carson Spradling was the first to come on the dance floor and started break dancing, he of course has his Spradling Construction hat on and he now took over the company. The next person on the dance floor was the new Calvin Klein model, Nathan Hearn, who eventually ended up in his underwear showing off the new brief’s collection. When the music was playing, James Manning went up to the DJ and auxed up to play his number 1 rap album in the world. Johnny Gornto knew every word to the songs and was vibing the entire time. Savannah Arias blew up with her crazy nail company and moved down to LA and is now the professional nail artist for the Kardashians. Tycen White was messing with these cows in a pasture and wanted to “cow tip” so Jessica Mingay was the last to arrive because she had to help all the cows. Tycen showed up shortly after with dirt all over him, wonder what he was up to. When Jessica was talking about livestock, Macie Oglesby came up to her telling her how she goes around the country and does lamb judging for Livestock Fairs. During the dance party, Marivella Torres and Lacee Myers had to leave early because they got paged for an emergency surgery, Anthony Gonzalez got checked into Seattle Grace Hospital because he got hurt practicing for American Ninja Warrior. On the dance floor, Pete Rossi requested the song, “Whip my Hair” by Willow Smith and he was flinging it all around. Colin Lira was eating the pasta, carb-loading for his Olympic Trials the next morning. Ofelia Montano and Dawna Coad were catching up about how amazing being a teacher is, and Dawna got inspired by our old high school principal, Mrs. Turk, to show her kids a TikTok every Friday. When Conrad Vosefski heard the word “TikTok” he was telling the girls how he just went viral on TikTok for his skating videos and is now competing in next year’s Street Skating League. During the end of the night, Marco Rosales and Annalisa Avalos went outside to show each other their new trucks. They were doing burnouts and revving their engines the whole time, I know you would have been so mad because that is bad for the environment. When we all went outside to see all the noises from the trucks, Alaijah Ayers and Tiara Masabala were getting ready to leave because they had a runway show to go to the next day. Alaijah designs outfits for Tiara, and Tiara shows them off on the runway. When we all went back inside, Alex Tejeda stayed outside with his soccer ball doing tricks. He had missed that day’s practice with Sacramento Republic just so he could catch up with Yonatan Gutierrez and ask him how coaching the U6 AYSO team is going. Chris was so amazed that Dominic Vieira is the head manager at Bass Pro Shop and he was trying to give Dominic good tips on how to make excellent fishing poles. Eamonn Drury was standing right next to them while still decked out in all University of Hawaii spirit wear and he was bragging to them about how much better fishing is in Hawaii than California. Carter Lira enjoyed the reunion, but wanted to get back on his PS5 to play Fortnite just so he could show off about how much better than he is while talking to 7-year-olds. Joseph Solis was trying to recruit Carter to his League of Legends Team the whole night, but Carter wanted to play Fortnite instead. Jared Beechler was talking about how he just arrived from his private jet and he was a little sick from the plane ride because he is afraid of flying. He took Gary Tonneson home on his jet because Gary went to court for stealing shoes at Footlocker and Jared was his lawyer. Fisher Lyon was right by and said to Jared, “you got sick from being on a plane? That’s nothing compared to going to the moon.” Fisher is now the chief of the astronaut office at NASA. Jason Tello and Kevin Jimenez are working on Fisher’s spaceship that he is going to take up into Mars. From where I was standing, I could see Ben Sisneros towering over everyone, he grew even taller and is now 8 foot 2. Then right next to him was Art Weller, his face was shining bright because he was on his phone checking his stocks. He’s been doing stocks for two years now and has made millions of dollars. His cousin, Ashlee Weller was hanging out with Kylei Goodwin. Ashlee invented the latest craze in eyelash extensions and owns 20 Subways. At the photo booth, Atziri Villaseñor and Zack McLean were the first in line showing off their new fashion line they created together, the store is now on Rodeo Drive. Next in line was Miguel Quiambao holding up his UFC winning belt that he got last week and yelling “WWE isn’t real” so Jacob Awender could hear and they almost got into a fight but Justin Sanchez got in the middle and broke it up. Since the night is almost over and I have to be up at 5 in the morning to work in my office, I will catch you up later to tell you more about all of our old friends. Miss you and hope you are doing well! Keep saving those turtles! - Lily P.S. I made sure there were no straws at the event. by Lily Griffin, Trevor Gomes and Bryan Rish

“...Believe in a love that is being stored up for you like an inheritance, and have faith that in this love there is a strength and a blessing so large that you can travel as far as you wish without having to step outside it” (Rainer Maria Rilke). Congratulations Class of 2021! Your journey so far has been a rather bizarre one, and I am so proud of your resiliency, your humor, your humility, your strength, your brilliance of mind and spirit. Take that with you into the world, find your people, and love them fiercely, work hard at something you love, seek joy because it is out there, I promise you. Much love. Read poetry. Mrs. Smith Senior Class Adviser
Congraulations class of 2021. It feels like yesterday when you first walked through our kindergarden class doors. But here you are, just a few days before your senior graduation. You lived through the craziest, yet most memorable senior year. You have preservered through it all, from zoom, to internet issues, socially distancing, and learning from bed for some. From here on out, believe in yourself, keep moving forwards, and whatever it is that you decide to do, do it because you want it. Wherever your journey takes you remember to aways be kind to one another and do not forget where you come from. I aam so proud of all od you. Congratulations class of 2021! Mrs. Moua
The fun memories I have with this class is that I got to teach some of you as first graders at DH White and some of you as second graders at Isleton. I have enjoyed getting to see you guys grow up and look forward to continuting to see and hear about your future endeavors and accomplishments. I am cheering for you all. Mrs. Dolk
The class of 2021, you were one of my last classes in the 6th grade at RIVERVIEW Middle School! Thank you for letting me finish that chapter in my career with one of the best classes! You were always eager to learn and were so much fun to have in class! I’m sure the neighborhood was glad to see us and the rockets we launched in science go! I remember the rockets landing on their roofs, on their lawns, and in the marina. The fun we had on field trips, especally at science camp in Point Bonita! The lighthouse, the beach, great hikes, marine mammal center, and garbology! Those memories will always be cherished with your smiles embedded into them. Can’t wait to see where your future endeavors take you. Excited to hear about the careers you start and the colleges you attend. You all have a tremendous amount of potential! In a world that is desperately in need of leaders, do not be the person who always mindlessly follows! Potential is only meaningful if it is fulfilled. Set goals and do not lose focus of them, some of your goals may change, but don’t change having goals. “Hide not your talents... what’s a sun-dial in the shade.” -Benjamin Franklin Best Wishes. Mr. V
The class of 2021 has a special place n my heart because it’s my son Pete’s class. I remember in kindergarten in Ms. Moua’s was class I would come in after naptime and take the class out for P.E. I also coached a lot of you in soccer. When we were the Green Dragons we were so much better than all the other teams, we usually had to just play keep away and I wouldn’t let anybody score any more goals. In second grade I remember Preston could not stay in his seat and Art had a sense of humor when no one else that age did. In fifth grade I was your teacher again and we spent a lot of time learning about fractions and we sang “Best Day of My Life” at promotion. In middle school I drove the leadership students to the CADA conference and Jason Tello made me laugh so hard in the car! I have so many great memories of being at our cabin at Bucks Lake with Lily Grriffin and Josie Preston. I’m so proud of the Class of 2021 and I know you’re all going to do great things after high school! Mrs. Rossi Hello class of 2021! I had the honor of being a second grade teacher to some of you! I’m so proud of all of your hard work and effort you put in to graduate. I can’t wait to see what amazing things you accomplish as you start out on your next journey! Best of luck to you all! Mrs. Bonner To my volleyball girls, Remember to always be safe, have a great weekend, and don’t let me see you on the internet ;) Coach LuAnn
