Suheng Chiv Receives Frank H. Buck Scholarship

by Aiden D. Mayhood, Editor-in-Chief

Suheng Chiv awarded the prestigious Buck’s Scholarship.

11th grader Suheng Chiv received the prominent Frank H. Buck Scholarship for his academic efforts and achievements. The Frank H. Buck Scholarship, founded in 1990 to support students with skyrocketing higher education costs, provides a full scholarship for all the ordinary costs of being a college student, which includes tuition costs. This scholarship is awarded to 12-15 students every year living in the six California counties that Frank H. Buck served in his United States congressional district from 1932-1942: Contra Costa, Napa, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Solano, and Yolo counties. Kelsey Blegen, a Buck Scholar who is also a graduate of Rio Vista High School, is Suheng’s mentor through the foundation. Growing up in Cambodia, Suheng has only lived in Rio Vista for 9 years. An honor roll student every year at RVHS, Suheng credits his success partially to the great environment Rio Vista High School offers. “Everybody knows everyone,” he

stated. “You can tell friends and teachers about problems.” Suheng also credits his success to his parents. “ I feel like my parents have been my superheroes.” Being in the last generation of Buck Scholars, as the scholarship closed in the spring of 2016, Suheng intends to further his education by taking SAT prep classes, studying more, and nailing Algebra II. He plans on going to school to study something in the medical field, like becoming a physical therapist or a doctor. “My biggest advice is, when there is so much you want to do, you should just focus on one goal and soul search for it,” remarked Suheng. As Suheng is beginning his junior year of high school, he mentioned, “The last two years of high school have gone by so fast, and I haven’t been able to enjoy it to its fullest.” There is no doubt Suheng will accomplish his goals in life and finish high school in the best fashion.

August 21 marked the first total eclipse visible from the contiguous United States since 1979. Rio Vista only experienced approximately 80% of the eclipse while other atreas of the U.S such as Salem, Oregon experienced a total eclipse. What made this such an event is the fact that this occurs when the moon completely covers the sun, unlike a partial eclipse, that only covers a small part of the the sun. This great event was not only an amazing sight but also a dangerous one. Looking into the eclipse could cause permanent damage to the eyes, but a lot of students wanted to test that theory. So, the school gave the students a safe way to watch the eclipse using a paper plate and a

Moon approaching sun to create solar eclipse.

The Back-to-School Aloha Dance was put on by Mr. Miller’s Leadership class. It took place on Friday, August 19 in the school’s quad. The Hawaiian theme was an exciting way to celebrate the fun summer season as well as celebrating the first week back at school and getting back into the school spirit and routine. There were palm trees and tropical attire with fun and edgy music put on by the DJ’s as well. The best part? It was free! The leadership class worked hard to create the

wonderful illusion of the Hawaiian theme, adding a water slide for an exciting twist. They also painted a tiki and coconuts to give off a tropical vibe. “The theme was fun,” Ryann Kelly said, “but they should’ve played more Elvis!” Many people said they had a blast at the first dance of the year and can’t wait to attend the next one.

Check out some great highlight dance photos on page 4!

What Did Guam Ever Do? SEPTEMBER_______________________________________ September 1 - Football @ Natomas (away) 5:30 p.m. (JV) by Henry Rossi, Associate Editor

by Aiden D. Mayhood, Editor-In-Chief

On August 8th, Kim Jong-Un’s North Korea shocked the world by threatening to attack the U.S. territory of Guam with mid-range ballistic missiles. Situated to the east of the Philippines and south of Japan, Guam is a desirable location for military activity, containing U.S. military bases, personnel, and equipment. Owned by the United States since 1898, Guam was vital during World War II for the Americans. North Korea is no stranger to making insane proclamations or threats. In the last few months they have increasingly tested missiles, worrying Japan and its other democratic neighbors. With an anti-democratic approach to economics and politics, Kim Jong-Un and his regime struck fear into the Natives and tourists of the tiny island in the Pacific. China stated that they would not interfere in the war unless the United States struck first, and they would join the side of Kim Jong-Un. If North Korea struck first, China

would stay neutral. Luckily, North Korea has since backed off from their threats, citing they would “watch a little more the foolish and stupid conduct of the Yankees.” Is this a sign of what’s to come?

Fresh, New Leadership in Student Body Government by Marlys Eckard-Henderson

It’s a new year, and with that comes a new student body government. The student government has many responsibilities, such as fundraising, school dances, and planning other events at Rio Vista High School. One of the events last year’s student government planned was the spring rally. The spring rally included the powderpuff game, the car show, and the talent show. There are many reasons why students should join the student body government. You can address changes you want in the school. You can get more involved into the school activities. And, you can also put it on your résumé! The student body government for all RVHS classes are the following:

For the 12th grade class, congratulations to Hunter Apple, president; Brianna Summitt, vice president; Bryan Cairo, secretary; and Austin Francis, treasurer. For the 11th grade class, congratulations to Destanie Rendon, president; Brooke Okamura, vice president; Jaylynn Lacy, secretary; and Suheng Chiv, treasurer. For the 10th grade class, congratulations to Madison Myer, president; Kaitlyn O’Connor, vice president; Sydney Saldana, secretary; and Zoe White, treasurer. For the 9th grade class, congratulations to Fallon Garrett, president; Fisher Lyon, vice president; Eamonn Drury, secretary; and Art Weller, treasurer.

What is the best thing about being a senior? Being at the top of the food chain? Those gorgeous senior pictures in the yearbook? Walking across the graduation stage? This year, Rio Vista High School seniors added a new privilege to the list: senior parking spaces! Beginning this year, any senior who signs up for a space (and pays the $15 fee) gets to paint a parking spot that is completely their own.

Page 3

Emma Wright said, “It feels good to be original”. On August 18, seniors went to the parking lot and began personalizing their parking spaces with some fun designs, such as Austin Francis’ Napoleon Dynamite themed parking space, or Tilly McTeer’s California licence plate themed space. Yes, they look like the best spots around, but be sure not to park in a senior’s spot!

Let the Homecoming “Games” Begin

by Henry Rossi

It’s back to school and Homecoming is coming quick! Homecoming will take place on Friday, September 15th. This year’s annual Homecoming float competition between classes will be Board Games themed. The Senior’s float will represent the board game Clue, the Junior’s Battleship, the Sophomore’s Monopoly, and Freshman’s Scrabble. Don’t forget to attend the Homecom-

ing Football game against Millennium on the 15th at 7:00 p.m. because the floats will be shown off at half time. The winner will be announced shortly afterwards, along with the Homecoming King, Queen, Prince, and Princess. The Homecoming dance will take place on Saturday, September 16th at the Veteran’s Memorial Building and the theme of the night will be Candyland.

Principal’s Message by Victoria Turk, Principal

I am happy to report that we had a smooth opening of the 2017-2018 school year. Both students and teachers are prepared to have an outstanding year in academics and extracurricular activities. RVHS has scheduled a traditional 4 x 4 Block. Block A Term 1 runs from August 9 - October 6 and Block A Term 2 is October 9t - December 15. Students will complete four classes for 40 credits. Block B Term A is January 8 - March 16 and Block B Term is March 19 - June 1. Students will complete an additional 40 credits for a total of 80 per year. I would like to personally invite all parents to “Coffee with RVHS Staff.” The first meet and greet is scheduled for September 6 at 7:30 a.m. in the RVHS Media Center. Besides coffee and snacks, you will have the opportunity to informally meet with teachers. “Coffee with RVHS Staff” is the first Wednesday of each month. One other important night for all parents is the RVHS Block A Arena scheduled for September 14. Parents will receive their student’s progress report and have the opportunity to conference briefly with teachers and determine if a more formal conference is necessary.

Hunter Apple looking into the eclipse safely. piece of paper. “I thought the eclipse was a memorable experience,” Cecilia Hernandez said. During the peak of the eclipse, every student left class at the beginning of second period. Then, they went down to

the football field and watched the eclipse with the paper plates and paper. Everyone watched the eclipse for about 20 minutes before returning to class to continue the day.

Rio Vista High Welcomes Cecilia Berti from Italy

by Emily Bellante

Every year, around two students travel to Rio Vista from various countries through the AFS program and spend a year staying with the people in Rio Vista’s community. Over 100 students have been hosted by Rio Vista High School since 1960. Rio Vista High School won the national award for “Outstanding High School” in 2015. According to the AFS programs website, “AFS Intercultural Programs is an international, voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organization that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.” This year, Rio Vista High School is happy to welcome Cecilia Berti to Rio Vista High School and America. Cecilia flew 18 hours from Pesaro, Italy to be here. She enthusiastically said, “I am

happy to have this experience. I was glad to leave.” Cecilia heard about this program through her now twenty-two year old sister who traveled to Ohio and told Cecilia about her amazing experience, making Cecilia want to be part of the program herself. In Italy, Cecilia went to a school of about 10,000 students that focused on linguistics. She studied Italian, English and German. In Italy, instead of picking your classes, you pick your school which focuses mainly on one subject. Cecilia is a senior this year and spends her free time practicing volleyball with the Lady Rams. If you would like to to get involved with the AFS program by hosting or donating, contact Natalie Crew at (707)-3742703 or ncrew@frontiernet.net.

Math Problem of the Month A high school has a strange principal. On the first day, he has his students perform an odd opening day ceremony: There are one thousand lockers and one thousand students in the school. The principal asks the first student to go to every locker and open it. Then he has the second student go to every second locker and close it. The third goes to every third locker and, if it is closed, he opens it, and if it is open, he closes it. The fourth student does this to every fourth locker, and so on. After the process is completed with the thousandth student, how many lockers are open? First student to bring Mrs. Vielhauer the correct written answer will be honored in the next Ram’s Ear Edition!

Ms. Scott, Mrs. Apple, and Mrs. and Mr. Montgomery enjoy some well-deserved down-time in the shade during lunch. by Isabel Flores

Rio Vista High School’s teachers gathered around to eat lunch together outside the quad on Wednesday, August 16. The people who made this new tradition possible were Mr. Miller, Mrs. Knisley, and Mrs. Griffin. They all went to a summer cultural institution to learn about how to make the school’s environment better. Other schools had been allowing the teacher staff to gather around the quad and eat lunch together, and they decided it

would be fun and easy to do it here. “I missed it,” Mr. Miller said, “but I

heard it was a success.” It was a great opportunity for the staff to unwind and interact with their

students. The staff was very happy to have this time to talk amongst themselves and enjoy a lunch outside. Everyone seemed to enjoy the meal that Mrs. Turk provided them, and she was more than happy to give it to the beloved staff.

Cell Phone Policy RAM’S EAR Being Enforced OPINION POLL

Rio Vista High School staff and administration understand that parents need to communicate with their children during school hours. In order to accommodate parental needs, students may use cell phones before and after school and during lunch for calls and texting. We ask that you please use these times for contacting your child and not during instructional time. Cell phones will be confiscated should students use them during instructional periods. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Lunch is 11:20 - 11:55 on M, T, Th, F and 10:50 - 11:25 on W.

MOVIE REVIEW by Jennifer Ortiz and Alexis De Santiago

The movie of the month was Despicable Me 3, chosen by RVHS student Gerardo Mandujano. Despicable Me 3 is a movie franchise that is followed by Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2. In this movie, the minions want Gru to return to the life of crime. But instead, Gru stayed as a retired villain. He traveled to Freedonia to see his twin brother for the very first time. They found themselves in a difficult situation. They had to take down Balthazar Bratt, a child star who sought revenge against the world. “I think that people should watch this movie if they really want to laugh and have a good time. I know this is a kid’s movie, but adults can really enjoy this movie too.”- Gerardo Mandujano

Volleyball Teams Are Booster Club Looking Fully Prepared to Win for More Participants Rio Vista High School encourages all parents to be active participants in the RVHS Booster Club. The Club supports academics, athletics, and arts. Over the past five years, they have supported 12 individual and team sports, art and drama supplies and field trips, and the AVID experience. In addition to all of this, they have purchased a van for school trips, sound

systems for the entire campus, welding machines for the Ag Shop, and an electronic marquee. Last summer, they remodeled the RVHS meeting room with new furniture, equipment, and supplies. The Booster Club meets the first Monday of the month in the RVHS Meeting Room (across from the gym) at 6:00.

Pre-Season Wrestling Conditioning Not Just for Wrestlers

by Emily Bellante photo: Jennifer Ortiz

Wrestling preseason conditioning has begun. It is four days a week, two days practicing on the weights and two on the mat every Monday through Thursday

from 3:30-4:30. If you’re interested, talk to Mr. Smith. Anyone is invited, even if you’re not in wrestling. It is a great way to get fit!

Destanie Rendon sets the volleyball during practice.

It’s volleyball season and the RVHS girls are fully prepared this year! Coach LuAnn Haley has been working with the girls since July 31st. LuAnn Haley coaches the girls in a way a lot of people wouldn’t be able to. She pushes the girls to near exhaustion for 5 days. As Coach LuAnn stated, “We now practice 5 days a week, and the last 15 minutes of each practice is spent maintaining that conditioning.” Coach LuAnn Haley even has her own philosophy for her coaching: AAA (Academics, Attitude, Achievers). LuAnn wants the girls to be successful in life, have positive sportsmanship, and always strive to be the best. We asked LuAnn on how she felt about the upcoming game with our rival team, the Delta Saints. Her response was, “I am confident and eager to see such a senior heavy team against their rival school. GO RAMS!” This year’s senior volleyball players are Trinity Gonzales, Cecilia Berti, Emily Fraser, Brianna Summitt, Janet Tejeda, Guadalupe Ruiz, Tillie McTeer, Hannah Burgess, Caitlin Bowers, Emma Wright, and Khaenani Mamea. They also have a couple of newcomers for the volleyball team, Trinity Gonzales and Cecilia Berti, who are new to RVHS. Jayden Griffin, Destanie Rendon, Mercedes Roberts, and Guadalupe Ruiz all moved up to varsity this year.

Madison Davis and the team practice their “bumping” techniques. The volleyball team was involved in a children’s clinic fundraiser that was very successful, where more than 40 kids attended. All the money they raised went to the volleyball program. LuAnn’s expectations this year are to take the volleyball team further than last year’s team. Last year, the team made it to the second round of playoffs. Coach LuAnn stated, “They are definitely ready for this season.”

Cheer Brings Summer Awards and New Competition Team by Robert Price

Cheerleaders at RVHS work together to pump up the crowd. This year, the cheerleaders at Rio Vista High School started off their year by going to Jamz Cheer Camp. They learned a lot of new moves and ways of cheering and grew their friendships, bringing them closer together. Jamz Cheer Camp took place from July 22 to July 23. Twenty-six of the twenty-eight squad members went to camp. The team won the hard-working Jamz Helmet this year. Many of cheerleaders were awarded ribbons, but a few were awarded the “Red and Blue Ribbons.” Symphony Weller won a sweep-

stakes to go to Orlando, Florida, to perform in the All-American halftime. “I encourage all girls and guys to try out for any sport because there are great opportunities among them,” Symphony said. Jamz Cheer Camp this year was so hot that a few girls passed out, but that did not ruin their overall experience. There are two different squads of girls this year, and there is a new Competition Squad with 16 team members on it, who have longer practices and compete up against other teams at Six Flags and Sacramento. Meagan Delancy said, “I think we are going to do a good job. We have a really strong bond.”

Creative Arts Club is for anyone who is creative, artistic, or just interested in visual arts. Students who join this club may participate in various fundraisers to support our goal of providing fine arts enrichment. Students who participate will have the opportunity to go on field trips to museums and galleries and may choose to participate in hands-on visual arts activities as well. All students are welcome. So come join the fun!

AFS (AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE):

The American Field Service is dedicated to creating understanding and friendship between cultures and various people across our great country. We raise money to participate in a short-term domestic school exchange with another AFS school across the country. We also support and welcome all foreign exchange students at Rio Vista High School. AFS is open to all students, and service to our community is required participation for the club.

PAC (PERFORMING ARTS CLUB):

PAC is for students who love all types of live art. We will be attending performances of dance, theater, music whenever possible, and work in tandem with the Drama Club.

ARK (ACTS OF RANDOM KINDNESS):

The ARK Club is dedicated to make the RVHS campus and Rio Vista’s community full of kindness. Our goal is to conduct uplifting activities and projects that will assist in making high school a little more enjoyable. We meet every other Tuesday to discuss and create events that will spread kindness.

RDC (RIO VISTA HIGH DANCE CREW):

The purpose of the dance crew is for students to learn and improve choreography, express themselves through dance, promote physical fitness, communicational skills, and problem solving. RDC is currently looking for students who are interested in being a guest dancer, mixing music for the dance crew to use, social media guru, or film/camera members. If you are that person always beat-bopping around in your head or moving to any beat, come join the fun!

ACADEMIC DECATHLON TEAM:

This club is a student-led effort to prepare for the Sacramento County Academic Decathlon that takes place every February in Sacramento. It is open to ALL students and EVERYONE is welcomed and encouraged to join. We especially need “C” and “B” students to fill out an entire team! Our team more than doubled in size last year and we are looking to get even more students on our team.

GLEE CLUB:

Glee Club is for any and all students who enjoy singing. You don’t need to be a singer, just have a desire to join in! Levels of participation range from solos and major parts to chorus members. We will practice one a week for about an hour. Expect to hold performances several times a year at school and in the community.

WRESTLING CLUB:

Interested in competing in JV, vVarsity, or Girls Wrestling, or supporting the team as a state keeper, assistant or fan.

T-SHIRT CLUB:

Interested in running a classroom-based business; designing and printing t-shirts and other items for customers.

MSC (MATH AND SCIENCE CLUB):

The club exists to promote positive social and community interaction amongst people who enjoy math and science.

HEALTH CAREERS CLUB:

The health careers club exists to educate students about careers in the healthcare industry and to serve the community of Rio Vista. Students with an interest in the healthcare field come together and learn from guest speakers and each other. The club will be moving forward with fundraising and will be looking at ways to give back to the community in Rio Vista. This club is a partnership between the North Bay Regional Medical Center Nurses’ Academy and RVHS. The North Bay Nurses are our most regular speakers.

Arena Night Arena Night is an evening when all teachers at Rio Vista High will have a station set up in the gym for parents to rotate around to talk to. This year’s Arena Night will be on September 14th from 6-7 p.m. Both parents and students are encouraged to attend this event. Also parents will be able to pick up students’ progress reports.

Volunteer Opportunities The RioVision volunteer team can always use student help at their events or for one of their projects. They can text (707)386-9265, OR just show up for a scheduled event with their form and a willingness to help. Thanks a lot, MaryEllen Lamothe

Khaenani Mamea #29

Hunter Apple #21

Khaenani is a senior on the Varsity Volleyball team this year. “Nani has worked extremely hard in the preseason. She has pushed herself and her teammates with conditioning. Although Nani is quieter than some, she makes sure that she is heard when she is on the court. Nani has shown great leadership in drills and the killer ability to conquer anything you throw at her,” expressed Coach LuAnn Haley.

Hunter is a senior on the Varsity Football team this year. “Hunter is a leader in the classroom with a 3.9 GPA. He has worked out almost every day during the offseason and his hard work has really paid off. He is a very good young man and great representative for the football program and RVHS. Last, he was recently selected to play in a national level football event (the Blue/Grey game) which shows he can play a little football too!” commented Coach Chris Medders.

Varsity Football Has High Hopes for Season

by Michael Arrellano, Sports Editor

It is looking like RVHS Varsity Football captains have some very high goals that they plan to achieve this year, coming off an 8-3 season the previous year, such as: making it to playoffs, winning a championship, and even beating Bradshaw and Golden Sierra. Blaine Dart stated, “I believe that one of the strongest points on the team is the running game, and I would also like to thank Ryan and Hunter for working hard in the off-season.” Dakota Mills believes that one of the stronger points on the team this year is the great coaching staff. Ryan Hurley thinks that the 15 second offense will be a very big positive factor in this year’s season to come. Hunter Apple strongly believes the defensive back group is a huge strong

point. On the other hand, the captains agree that the number of players on the team will be a big factor in our season. Some of the personal accomplishments that the captains plan on achieving are, according to Blaine, “ to get noticed by a D1 college.” “I want to get All-League MVP,” commented Dakota. Ryan also said, “I am gonna work hard and try to get AllLeague.” Finally, Hunter says he plans to “Go off.” Make sure to come out and support the football team on September 8 at 7:00 pm when they go head-to-head with Delta, the school’s rival, where the Rams plan to defend the bell once again.
