Cromer’s New Years Day Fireworks launches Photography Competition Cromer’s New Year’s Day Fireworks committee is launching a new photography competition to mark the 14th year of the annual display in 2013 which began in 2000.
The competition is open to children, adults, amateur and professionals alike, so come along to Cromer on New Year’s Day, bring your camera, photograph the event and get creative.
It is hoped that everyone from children to artists and community groups to ambitious individuals will enter and get involved in this fabulous event.
The winner of the competition will have their image turned into the official poster for the 2014 New Years Day Firework event as well as use in other promotional material. There will also be a host of further prizes yet to be announced.
Chairman of the Fireworks committee Jim Bond said “the annual New Year's Day Fireworks have been capturing people's imagination for over ten years, every year we see hundreds of fabulous photographs of the event in the press and online. We thought it would be great to launch the photography competition to inspire more people and to capture this fantastic event. We are looking for photographs that really capture the spirit of the event."
For further information and the competition rules please visit www.cromertown.org or email fireworks@cromertown.org.
The competition entry deadline is Wednesday 16 January 2013.

Joyeux Noel
A varied programme which includes a first half of English madrigals and lute songs by John Dowland plus Stanford's “The Blue Bird” and a choral arrangement of “Autumn Leaves”. The second half has a French flavour and includes “O Holy Night” by Adam Adolpe, Christmas motets by Victoria and Sweelinck, “Gabriel's Message” and French carols as well as carols for audience participation.
Programme:
6.30pm - Saturday 15 December St Andrews Church, Holt
There will be a retiring collection and all proceeds will go equally to the St Andrews building project and FALCON Children’s Festival This is the second of a proposed series of concerts set up to provide a regular way of raising much needed funds for St Andrews Church and F.A.L.C.O.N. The intention is to build, both a showcase for local talented musicians, and a performance opportunity for pupils from the Purcell School, giving audiences and performers alike a rewarding, enjoyable and fulfilling experience. F.A.L.C.O.N will now be an annual childcentred festival, providing opportunities for children to engage with and experience the creative arts, alongside a programme of occasional events with F.A.L.C.O.N ‘flyingout’ to schools and other venues. In building towards the festival we aspire to in the future, we are inevitably looking for practical and material support, and would be enormously grateful for any help and support you felt able
to give. A generous donation to the retiring collection, would be an enormous help to both groups and very gratefully received. F.A.L.C.O.N would like to thank Father Howard and Susan Wharfe of St Andrews Church for working with us to make this series of concerts possible.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
Chairman Ken Macnish welcomed two newly-enrolled members and one visitor at our lunch on 6 November. We enjoyed the meal supplied by the Links Hotel, West Runton and then moved into the function room for coffee and the talk.
The presentation was by David Morton, who is a mechanical engineer by profession and mainly works in the automotive industry. The talk took the form of a quiz with questions ranging across a technical spectrum which included GPS satellites, microwave ovens and motor vehicles. David’s session was well-received and a vote of thanks was proposed by David Paton.
The next lunch will be our Christmas event, to which partners are also invited. As advance booking is required, it is too late to join in at the time you are reading this. Nevertheless, we invite enquiries for the new year from prospective members and anyone who might be interested in coming to present an after-lunch talk.
If you are a retired, or nearly retired, gentleman and you like the sound of a monthly lunch followed by a speaker, you are very welcome to come along as a visitor and try us out. If you are interested, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or e-mail candsprobus@hotmail.co.uk for more information.
There is no requirement to live in either Cromer or Sheringham and whether you are an established resident or a newcomer to the area, you will get a warm welcome. Cromer Times Cromer Times #411 December 1st 2012

Christmas Tree Festival at St Andrew’s
St. Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham, is gearing itself up to welcome 44 local and regional charities and voluntary organisations and an anticipated 3,000 visitors to Sheringham’s third annual Christmas Tree Festival which this year will run from 13th to 18th December. The festival, organised by a committee of members of various Sheringham churches and local volunteers, is hosted each year by various Churches of the town.
The objective of the festival is to provide a spectacular spiritual platform for charities to raise funds by attracting donations from visitors to the festival. Last year over £5,000 was raised, from stalls and donations, for the 42 charities that took part. Once again this year the trees will be decorated in truly imaginative ways that will uniquely portray the charities
and causes. There will also be a Prayer tree where you will be able to write a prayer and hang it on the tree. The stunning displays will be supported by a background of seasonal carols and music. In the hall there will be various charity stalls where you may find some Christmas presents for family and friends. Light refreshments will also be available throughout the festival. The festival will be open from 1pm to 7pm Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday and from 1pm to 6pm on Sunday and Tuesday.
On the final evening of the festival (Tuesday 18 December) at 7.30 pm there will be a not to be missed event ‘Carols Around the Trees’ which promises to be a truly magical and spiritual event. Admission to the festival is free so come along, support your favourite charity and share in the love in this special community event. For more details please see www.sheringhammethodist.org.uk and follow the link to the festival.

Kids go free at Festive Family Show
Cromer’s Christmas Seaside Special is now in its 8th year and has become something of a festive tradition for the whole family – and this year in a commitment to try and introduce a younger audience to live variety, families can bring children along free of charge.
A memorable mix of fun, laughter, spectacle, song and dance, it is a truly dazzling spectacle that promises to fill you with sparkle and festive cheer. This year’s show continues the feel good factor of the past year with inspiration taken from the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations and the wonderful London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. What better way to round off a fantastic year of celebrations than with a fabulous seasonal trip to the theatre! Popular home grown comedian Olly Day is back for his 4th successive show and will be joined on stage by comedienne Jo Little – a great comedy pairing sure to have their audience rolling around the aisles with laughter!

Also returning is the lovely Lulu Alexander whose delightful voice was a real treat last year. Lulu is joined by male vocalist Eddie Bushell who has lived in Cromer for most of his life and been involved in music and singing from an early age – this will be Eddie’s 4th performance on Cromer’s historic pier. Of course no Christmas Seaside Special would be complete without the sensational Seaside Special Dancers who always delight and dazzle their audiences with their energetic routines and amazing costumes designed by Cromer’s very own Laura Whyte. Joining Laura on the creative team once again this year are Director and Choreographer Di Cooke, Musical Arranger Nigel Hogg, Scenic Artist/Set Designer Ian Westbrook at 3D Creations and Amanda Hill of Pink Panda Company. Audiences will delight in big production numbers featuring ever popular Christmas songs including Happy Holiday, Walking in a Winter Wonderland and It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas as well as a beautiful quartet, a choir and children from Cromer’s very own Marlene’s School of Dancing. Music will take them on a journey through a traditional Dickensian street into modern day London with a skyline that includes The London Eye, The Shard, The Gherkin and Big Ben as well as an amazing modern musical medley and a fun and cheery finale that is sure to send everybody happy. Christmas Seaside Special 2012 runs from 1st to 30th December with afternoon and evening performances almost every day. It promises all the magic of Christmas with more laughter, more laughter, more sparkle and more high energy dance routines than ever before. Discounts are available for group bookings, Tides Bistro is available to book a pre-Show supper and, with children going free (limited to two children aged 16 & under per full paying adult) what better way is there to celebrate the festive season? North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Last time I mentioned someone had shown an interest in Trinnie, our little cat with thyroid problems. I am therefore happy to report that Trinnie has now left for a loving new home, has settled in well and enjoying being back in a home environment. Her new family are happy to give her the one tablet she needs each day to keep the hyperthyroidism under control. Good news also for Adam and Eve the little cats in the photograph as they too have left for a new home together. In the last edition of the North Walsham Times the Miramar Veterinary Centre in Sheringham had placed a very large advertisement which covered everything people need to consider before giving a home to a new pet. The article was relevant to other animals as well as cats but
did cover everything people need to think about. Several of these items will have already been provided for cats and kittens that we re-home (vet check, treatment for fleas/worms, vaccination, worming, micro chipping and neutering). However, any ongoing expenses will be the responsibility of the new owner. For over 10 years we have had a stall at the “Craft and Things” Fairs in the St Benets Hall, North Walsham. Over the last year we have found that with the present economic situation people were less likely to buy the goods we have for sale. We therefore decided that we need to look for other ways and venues to raise money for the cats and advised Sally who organised the Fairs of our decision. As a consequence she decided to discontinue the sales at North Walsham next year. We thank her for her support over the years and wish her well at her other venues. We would also like to thank all our friends and customers over the years for their support. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, for a description and photographs of the cats you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham before giving us a call on the above number. If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
Council announces free pre-Christmas parking for Sunday shoppers
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has announced that, to encourage shoppers to spend their cash in north Norfolk over the festive period, it is introducing three hours free parking in all of its car parks in the district on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas (2, 9, 16 and 23 December). The announcement, which is in response to a suggestion from Holt Chamber of Trade and Commerce, is being introduced as a way of boosting trade on Sundays during the peak pre-Christmas shopping period. Tom FitzPatrick, NNDC Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Business Enterprise and Economic Development said “ I am pleased that the Council will provide three hours free parking, not just in Holt, but at all Council owned car parks across the whole of North Norfolk to allow traders across the whole district to benefit from this initiative and we encourage them to grasp this chance to boost their trade. We hope that residents in North Norfolk will be encouraged to take the opportunity to shop locally rather than go further afield and look forward to welcoming visitors from other areas on those days to our many excellent shops and eating places.”

Songbird Survival
Songbird Survival is a UK wide charity for songbirds made up of members who are lovers of the countryside, gardeners and farmers, ornithologists, conservationists and town and country people throughout Great Britain who are deeply concerned about the effects of increasing predation on songbird populations. Local member Eddie Bullimore takes up the story... “Songbird Survival first caught my attention in the local press. Living and working on the land all my life the work they are doing is of great interest to me. Songbird Survival are doing research to find out why we are losing so many birds. As a country man, one of the reasons is the amount of predators in the countryside. There are other things as well – modern

Gary Parrett’s (The Grove) Recipe 2 Loin of Gunton venison with toast pine nut and red onion mash, braised red cabbage and rich cacao sauce
This is a fairly challenging dish with plenty of preparation, but it’s well worth the effort.
Gunton venison is probably the best around at the moment, and with summer well and truly behind us it’s the perfect meal for those dark winter evenings.
The Grove maitre d’, Gary Taylor, has discovered a cracking Chilean red, the Emiliana Pinot Noir Reservea - full bodied, hearty, smooth and intelligent, a real autumnal wine - which compliments the Gunton venison perfectly.
Ingredients (for two meals):
200g of Gunton Venison loin from Icarus Hines in Cromer. I get Icarus to take the skin off and leave a little fat left on (trimmed) For the mash, 10g toasted pine nuts, Half a red onion (sliced) Two potatoes salt - pinch, pepper - pinch 80ml double cream 25g salted butter
Method:
1. Boil some water and add your peeled diced potatoes.
2. While they are cooking toast the pine nuts
and caramelize the red onions in a little butter and sugar. Mix the nuts and the onion together and turn your attention to the mashed potato.
3. Once the potatoes are soft (don’t over-boil) drain them in a colander for at least ten minutes – you’ll want to get all moisture out of them.
4. Return the empty potato pan to the stove and add the drained potatoes. Have the pan on a low heat, so not to burn them, and when all the steam has stopped evaporating add the pine nut mix, butter, double cream and salt and pepper, and mash. Expelling moisture is the perfect way to prevent the potatoes releasing gluten, giving you nice fluffy mash instead of it being gloopy and stodgy.
Ingredients - Braised red cabbage:
200g cabbage (finely sliced), 10ml white wine vinegar 80g demerara sugar Half a bottle of red wine, (I steal some Chilean from Gary for its fruit and spice…) 8g toasted fennel seeds salt and pepper 2stp olive oil (any) 50g diced onion 5 sprigs of thyme (stripped)
PICTURE FRAMING SERVICE A RT GALLERY · GIFT SHO P The Gallery Norfolk offers a handpicked selection of paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, jewellery and stylish gifts
Method:
1. Heat a saucepan with the olive oil until slightly smoking, add the onion and cabbage and continue to sweat on a medium heat until the cabbage has a shiny glaze.
2. Add the thyme leaves and fennel seeds and stir.
3. Once this is done add the white wine vinegar and the sugar, and stir in the half bottle of red wine.
4. Slowly cook until the cabbage is very soft and the sugar has given it a nice glaze, season to your liking and set aside.

1 beef knuckle bone 1 chicken carcass (both obtained from your local butcher, they may even give them to you for free if you ask nicely…!)
2 sprigs of rosemary 1 stick of celery (chopped) 1 white onion (diced) 1 red pepper (diced) 1 leek (washed and chopped) 2 carrots (chopped) 5 cloves of garlic (chopped with skin on) 500 ml of red wine - Bordeaux if possible 500ml of beef/veal stock, 5-8 g of dark bitter chocolate – minimum 70% but 100% if possible
Method:
1. Put your beef knuckle bones and chicken carcass in a tray and roast the bones to release the bone marrow. The gelatinous content of the marrow will thicken your sauce, so there’s no need for flour or any other thickening agent, making this dish completely gluten free. Don’t burn your bones as it will mar the taste of the finished sauce.
2. Heat a saucepan - add a little olive oil and add your diced and chopped vegetables. The trick here is to burn the vegetables to the bottom of the pan and then add half of the red wine to de-glaze them. This gives the sauce its colour and its richness. Turn the heat down and check on your bones.
3. When the bones have been roasted well and the marrow is out of the knuckle, add them both to the vegetables. You will notice that some of the marrow and bits of the chicken have been left stuck to the tray. These are the really flavoursome bits, so to remove them heat the tray on the stove and add a little of the red wine, then scrape with the back of a wooden spoon. This will lift the pieces and all the flavour that was stuck to the tray. Add this to the sauce pan.
4. Add your 500ml of beef stock to the pan and boil until the liquid has reduced to half.
5. You now need to strain the liquid into a separate pan, discarding the the bones and vegetables in the process. When you’ve done this put the remaining liquid back on the stove on a medium to high heat and continue reducing the stock until it has thickened slightly - keep a wary eye on this as your sauce will thicken very quickly!
6. Once done remove from the stove, add the bitter chocolate, and whisk.
This sauce gives the whole dish gives a unique twist, the pairing of the bitter chocolate sauce with the sweetness of the onion mash and the earthiness of the venison marries very nicely indeed. Although it’s a lengthy process, the rewards are well reaped and you will be the talk of the dinner table for weeks to come. Season the steak and cook to your liking; my preference for loin is medium rare.
When serving you will only need a little of the chocolate sauce because of the intensity of it do not use this sauce as gravy; the whole dish should not be covered in sauce.
I serve this dish with fried parsnip crisps to garnish, the crunch of the parsnip adds a lovely texture to the plate.
Good luck!

Cromer Carnival Christmas Concert This December sees the return of the ever-popular Cromer Carnival Christmas Concert for Senior Citizens. On Tuesday 11 December at 7pm Cromer Parish Hall will come alive with local performers, singers and dancers.
Senior Citizens are invited to join an evening with Cromer Carnival Committee with sherry, coffee and mince pies.
The concert is free to attend and there is a free coach service to the event sponsored by Marett’s Chariots. The free coach will run from Suffield Park Play Area at 6.25pm followed by Links Avenue (Station Road end) and Suffield Park Post Office. For those that cannot get to the coaches there is a free car service available. For more information please phone Steve on 01263 514469. Carnival Chairman Tony Shipp said “Any
senior citizen who has not attended before and would like to can contact the Committee so transport can be arranged to the event to see Cromer’s Christmas Lights and to the Parish Hall, where a warm welcome awaits with the usual food, entertainment, a visit form Father Christmas and free raffle. I look forward to you joining us for what I am sure will be an enjoyable evening."
The Concert has become a staple event in Cromer Carnival’s calendar which this year celebrates its 43rd year. The concert is a wonderful opportunity for residents to come together in celebration of Christmas.
Tony Shipp added “The VEO Christmas Concert is the last event of our carnival year. It was started as an evening, when transport was arranged to bring those elderly residents in to the town to see Cromer's Christmas lights, which they may otherwise not have been able to do. This was followed by an invitation from the late Mrs. Loynes at the Tudor Restaurant and Chair of the Christmas Lights Committee to have sherry and mince pies, with entertainment from the Parish Church Choir. When the Tudor Restaurant closed the Carnival Committee continued the occasion which has developed into the celebration which we have today.”

Great Music - but he can’t read a note!
You would think that a two hour show featuring the amazing sounds of the latest Yamaha keyboards would need a top player who could read music - but the latest music star to visit the Briston Organ Shows just doesn't read music! However, you wouldn't know, because he has an amazing ear for melodies and harmonies, and he thrilled a really packed Copeman Centre with such gems as 'Take the 'A' Train' (with an amazing piano solo!), some haunting Pan Pipe songs from South America, some catchy Latin numbers like 'La Bamba', and an unforgettable version of Jeff Wayne's 'War Of The Worlds' complete with the Richard Burton spoken introduction - it was absolutely stunning! No wonder the audience didn't want to go home afterwards and kept calling out for more!
His choice of instrument was in fact two Yamaha keyboards linked together, with a separate pedal board for his feet, all running through a top quality amplification system, and the resulting sounds had to be heard to be believed. As usual with the Briston Organ Shows, proceeds from the Raffle and Refreshments benefitted the Copeman Centre's funds to the tune of £151.20, and the ladies who run a fundraising stall for the East Anglian Air Ambulance raised £68 for that very worthy cause too. What a great result it was for everyone.
The Shows take a break now until 1 February next year, when top UK organist Nicholas Martin will be visiting for the first time - and believe it or not, over a third of the tickets for this show have already been sold. To reserve yours, or just to find about more about these great evenings of live music, telephone Carol on 01263 860844. 15 Cromer Times #411 December 1st 2012

Norfolk Recruit Sets Sail on a New Career A 20-year-old recruit from Holt is on course for a life on the ocean wave after completing the first phase of his Royal Navy training at HMS Raleigh, in Cornwall.
Trainee Air Engineering Technician Jack Burt arrived at the gates of the Royal Navy training establishment in September. During a 10 week intensive course Jack and his fellow recruits have been taught the basic skills they will rely upon throughout their Service careers. The training culminates in the passing-out-parade attended by families and friends.
The former pupil of Sheringham High School worked in a bar before embarking on his Naval career. Jack said: “I joined the Royal Navy for a respected career with good opportunities. Initial naval training is very hard. It felt terrible doing it, but to complete the course feels great. The highlight for me was the military exercise on Dartmoor and the physical training, such as the obstacle and assault courses.
With the first phase of his training complete Jack will transfer to HMS Sultan, in
Hampshire. There he will learn how to carry out scheduled maintenance as well as pre- and post-flight servicing and inspections for the Fleet Air Arm's helicopters.
The Royal Navy's Initial Naval Training course is underpinned by nine Core Maritime Skills that are the foundations of naval life and underpin operational effectiveness. Recruits are taught the basics of Naval discipline and customs. They learn about navigation and are given the chance to take the helm of their own medium sized inflatable boat during a waterborne orienteering exercise. With Royal Navy personnel playing a vital role in Afghanistan and other land-based operations, recruits undergo training in basic combat skills which includes survival in the field. Fitness is a key component of the training and is delivered using a disciplined method of military fitness which focuses on developing co-ordination and individual physical strength and endurance.
As the course progresses the recruits take part in three extended exercises to test their skills
CROMER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
“It has been an exciting and busy year President Miriam Ireland told members of Cromer WI at the November AGM.
During her report, Miriam said that one of the highlights of the year had been the celebration of the Institute’s 75th Birthday Party in July, which had been enjoyed by everyone. She thought that the success of this and all the other activities members had enjoyed over the past year was down to planning and hard work by the committee and also to the support from all the members, for which she thanked everyone.
Secretary Val Lodge agreed that 2012 had been a busy and enjoyable

year with a rise in membership, a varied programme and many different events giving Cromer WI “a friendly and vibrant atmosphere.
The person gaining the most points for competition over the year was Hazel Patrickson, with Judy Roberts second, and Pat Fisher third. Miriam Ireland was then re-elected President for the coming year.
Amongst other business earlier in the afternoon, members were asked to put their names down for the Christmas Lunch on Thursday 13 December, which will immediately precede the December meeting. It is hoped that a Special Visitor from a cold and snowy place might call in.
For those not going to the lunch and for any new members or visitors who would like to attend, the meeting will be held in Cromer Community Centre, Garden Street, and will begin at 2.30pm. There is no scheduled speaker, but there will be in-house entertainment.

‘Bonnie & Clyde’ in Trimingham?
Norfolk band’s new pop video
Norfolk rockers The Sharps release their new single and music video ‘Cage of Love’ this month, along with a limited free download of the song.
The band has just finished recording their debut EP at Headline Music Studios in Cambridge. Entitled ‘Road Movies’, it will be released on 10 December. Along with ‘Cage of Love’, it features three new songs and a re-mastered version of their previous single, ‘My Love Ain’t Gonna Save You’.
It’s been a busy few months for the boys. As well as hastily putting out a short music video about their friend Jamie Fox, the famous Norfolk ‘Human Scarecrow’, the band has just completed a mini-UK tour. Gigging in London, Southampton, Cambridge and Leicester, The Sharps also performed a live acoustic version of ‘Cage of Love’ on BBC Norfolk.
They are currently booking a full UK tour for February and March next year, with help from their recently-signed, London-based publisher, Rainbird Music Ltd.
The ‘Cage of Love’ video, written, directed by and starring the band in multiple roles, makes use of the Norfolk landscapes in its road movie style. It parodies films such as ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ and ‘Thelma & Louise’, focussing on three outlaws who escape from prison and steal a van in their desperate attempt to find freedom. Where in ‘Thelma & Louise’ the finale sees the couple reach the edge of the Grand Canyon, these local lads wind up at the more modest cliffs at Trimingham Beach.
The band was given permission to shoot a scene at the Feathers pub in their hometown Aylsham, in which drummer Sam Evans plays a barmaid. Last month the pub also allowed local band 24 Robbers to shoot part of the video to their song ‘Halloween Hitlist’ in its premises. “The flat, epic landscapes in rural Norfolk make the perfect backdrop for a road movie, says Callum Morgan, bassist and singer in The Sharps. “We’re very lucky to live somewhere people are willing to help out.

The Friends of Cromer Museum
At our November meeting Alistair Murphy, the curator at Cromer Museum, gave us an insight into some of the people and personalities who have made a contribution to the town in days gone by. One of the earliest men to make a mark on the town was Sir Bartholomew Rede who is remembered for setting up one of the earliest schools in the town on behalf of the Goldsmiths’ Company. No one at the meeting went back that far but quite a few had fond memories of Miss KD Barrett who was headmistress of Cromer Junior School in the 1960s. Alistair mentioned the families that played an important part in the development of the town such as the Gurneys, Windhams, Barclays and Bond Cabbells and their contributions are well known but he was able to sketch out the role of what some may see as lesser lights but who nevertheless made their mark on Cromer. Herbert Mace and Olive Edis popularised the town through their photographs, Claude Howard helped to develop the pier show into the national institution it is today and Alfred Savin recorded

North Norfolk Group Win Regional Award
At the recent Eastern Region volunteering conference held in Essex our North Norfolk Group was very surprised, firstly, with one other Group, to be award-nominated under Diabetes UK’s new Inspire Awards for volunteering, and then to become the regional winner of the Voluntary Group Award. This is wonderful recognition of all the achievements by North Norfolk Group’s committee and members.
Kate Brown and John Simmons were present to receive the award as they had travelled there to present a cheque for £6,600 raised over the past year in support of Diabetes UK’s national work and campaigns, which included £1000 to support a specific diabetes research project being undertaken by Imperial College, London.
Beyond this however regional award winners are also entered for the national award, which is to be decided and presented at Westminster in December. A much now anticipated event. Liberal Democrats delivering radical reform to shared parental leave and flexible working – Lamb Norman Lamb has welcomed the Government’s announcement of radical reforms to parental leave, allowing both parents to share up to a year’s leave to look after their new-born children. The North Norfolk MP was closely involved in shaping the proposals during his time as a Minister at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. The changes will deliver a long held Liberal Democrat commitment to make parental leave more flexible, allowing fathers to play a greater role in raising their child, helping mothers to return to work at a time that’s right for them and creating more flexible workplaces to boost the economy. New proposals are also announced today to extend the right to request flexible working to all employees, to give greater choice and freedom to workers and businesses. Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb

Question & Answer Surgery
Readers might be interested to hear that on 27 November Norfolk County Council will be holding a “question & answer surgery” on day care charging at the Age UK North Norfolk Daycentre, Good Companions Hall, 35b Cremer Street, Sheringham, NR26 8DZ between 10.00am and 12noon.
It will be an ideal opportunity for anyone who has a relative or are themselves receiving day care via Social Services to address any issues they may have about their charges. They will also have an opportunity to talk to someone face to face in private about their own particular circumstances if they feel that their financial assessment is incorrect and perhaps they are paying too much.
This is something that is affecting more and more people in our area now and I think it is an ideal way to talk to the people who are directly responsible for the day to day running of day care charging.
The “surgery” is open to all and refreshments will be available for anyone who wishes to come along.
It will also give an opportunity to those who are thinking of attending our Day Centre to come and visit us and see what services we can offer. Tabitha Evans
CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY
A number of members attended the Royal Horticultural Society’s annual lecture for the eastern region at the Open Academy in Norwich. The speaker was the well known garden designer Bunny Guinness. Her talk offered many ideas on improving the look of our gardens but some of us came away with the feeling that to do a proper job of re-designing a garden involves considerable expense. Our thanks to the Norfolk and Norwich Horticultural Society for hosting the event. We held our AGM at the beginning of our November meeting and it was pleasing to be able to look back on a very successful year. The meeting was followed by a cookery demonstration by Val Lodge. She passed on some ideas as to what to do with the fruit and vegetables we grow each year and the results of her efforts were much appreciated by the members present. The December meeting is for members and friends and is an informal social evening. The 2013 season of meetings begins on the 10 January in the Community Hall, Cromer at 7.30pm and will feature a speaker from Pensthorpe Garden and Reserve. All are welcome. Visitors £2. New members are always welcome. Membership for the year is £10. We hold monthly meetings (except August) and members have the chance to sign up for visits to local gardens, can take part in our shows and receive discounts at some local nurseries and garden centres. Why not give it a try? Further information from the Chairman on 01263 514399.
