Dads Smash Gruelling Walk for Hospital Baby Care Unit
Two intrepid walkers have reached the finish line of a gruelling 190-mile challenge – and smashed their fundraising target for a hospital intensive care baby unit.
Long-time friends
Matt Dyke and Martin Church, who met at school in North Walsham, braved howling wind, torrential rain, blisters and muscle strains in an epic trek from Cumbria to Yorkshire in just five days
When the going got tough they had to split into two teams so they could walk at their own pace - with Matt finishing a day earlier than Martin. But they reunited to triumphantly arrive at Robin Hood’s Bay together and grabbed an ice cream to celebrate licking their challenge Their efforts have so far raised almost £8500 for the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’s neo-natal intensive care unit, which has helped both the dads when their babies arrived prematurely The total is way beyond the men’s £5750 target – and they hope further donations will come in now they have completed their Coast-to-Coast challenge in less than their six-day goal
Both of Martin’s children have been helped by the unit His first, Charlie, arrived eight weeks early in 2018, then Mabel was 14 weeks premature in December 2021 weighing just 820 grams or 1 8lb, less than a bag of sugar Matt’s daughter Rosa was five weeks premature in 2014

Continued from front cover
Shortly after finishing, Anglian Water field technician Martin 41, from Horsford said: “The highlights were some stunning scenery, especially in the Lake District which was full of lambs, and the team camaraderie The lowlights were a knee injury which meant I let Matt go on at his own pace, and the tough terrain which was bleak at times ”
Matt, 37, a project manager for Wall Engineering in his hometown of North Walsham, added: “It was much harder than we imagined Our bodies are battered, bruised, blistered and swollen but we’re completely overwhelmed by the support, words of encouragement and donations received My highlight was seeing Martin battle on and reuniting with him to

reach the finish together – where we dipped our toes in the sea in the Coast-to-Coast tradition then treated ourselves to an ice cream ”
Both men paid tribute to their support team –driver Colm McGilway and sports therapists Sally Ling and Lisa Payne from Up and Running Treatments, who repaired their aching bodies along the way, plus various friends and guests who joined them for stretches of the walk to boost sometimes flagging morale They also thanked Stebbings Car Superstore at King’s Lynn for donating a crew van and tank of fuel
They averaged around 14 hours walking a day, without stopping, and eating as they went. Their route took them through the Lake District, over the Pennines, across the North York Moors ascending a total height twice as high as Mount Everest’s base camp to the summit
Donations towards their fundraising can be made via their JustGiving page and via collection boxes in North Walsham’s Mundesley Road and Happisburgh Road stores Just Giving Link

Baking back in time!
At Age Concern
North Norfolk we cook around 40 meals per day for people in the day centre, the Lunch Club and for the Meals on Heels service Our chef has the luxury of modern appliances and labour saving equipment although our kitchen is relatively small and we are planning to extend and refurbish the area in the next year once we have the funding
As part of our Reminiscence session, we stepped back in time to use kitchen tools that required a more hands on approach with weighing flour and butter on scales, mixing by hand and using wooden rolling pins to make some scones
https://cromergaragedoors.business.site
It was a very interactive session and everyone listened to an old Bakelite radio while concentrating on making the perfect scone
In building up our resources, we welcome donations of small items from the 50s and 60s to help us use the genuine articles in our reminiscence sessions although we do make use of the local library’s packs which are great conversation starters Reminiscence involves sharing thoughts and feelings of everyone’s experiences to recall and reflect on important events within their lives. The ability to recall and reflect helps older people to remember who they used to be in order to help them define their identity in the current moment
The stories of the past provide a source of affirmation, hope, and a belief that their legacy will be preserved.

Rental evictions increase following lockdown lift
Legally landlords can only do this in certain situations or where the tenant agrees to the rise in rent. It is possible for a tenant to challenge or even refuse the rent increase
Landlord possession actions were halted when the country went into lockdown in March 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the aim of easing the financial pressure on struggling families and individuals.
Following the lift on restrictions, the number of tenants evicted from private rented homes across England has seen a peak, although figures are still falling short of pre-pandemic levels Shelter, a charity which provides housing support, has reported that in England 1 in 12 private renters find themselves under the threat of an eviction with 1 in 4 renters consistently struggling to pay their rent
The current cost of living crisis has impacted not only on tenants but landlords who are finding themselves under financial pressure
With interest rates on mortgages increasing, homeowners are facing higher costs Tenants may find themselves in situations where their landlords are wanting to increase their rent

Laundry Loke, North Walsham NR28 0BD
In the UK, eviction is a classed as a civil process whereby a landlord can legally remove a tenant from a rental property This process can take a few months and landlords will have to give notice to their tenant of the planned eviction The amount of notice that a landlord is required to give to the tenant will vary depending on the type of tenancy agreement in place.
What can you do if you do not agree with the increase in rent?
If you do not wish to agree to the rent increase demanded by your landlord, the initial approach that you can take is to seek to negotiate with them Try to reach an agreement on a lower rental figure by writing to them and clearly identifying the sum that you feel would be reasonable and are willing to pay If the attempt to reach an agreement by negotiation fails and you find yourself in a position facing eviction you should seek legal advice A legal professional will be able to advise you of your rights as a tenant and can help you to challenge the proceedings

Details of participating artists, opening times and maps can be found on the excellent and very accessible new website: northnorfolkstudios co uk A brochure will also be available from early May in your local libraries, shops and tourist offices
As before the artists have been organized into trails and this year there are seventeen trails covering an area from Castle Acre and Fakenham to Potter Heigham and Acle and all along the coast from Burnham Market to Happisburgh
On the Reepham and District Art Trail there are 17 artists at 11 venues covering Melton Constable, Briston, Corpusty, Wood Dalling, Foulsham, Kerdiston and the historic market town of Reepham
There’s a huge variety of art to discover, as well as the uniqueness of each studio: paintings, prints, drawing, illustration, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, mixed media, woodwork and furniture Most studios are open daily 10am – 5pm
A Reepham and District trail map will be available from local shops, libraries and on the NNS website: www.northnorfolkstudios.co.uk
Alternatively, please contact Jane Bygrave 01603 870640
All the artists will be offering original work for sale, and many also produce prints and cards It’s a great opportunity to see what the artists in your area are up to and to buy directly from them without paying gallery commission
There will be a taster exhibition showing one piece of work by a selection of participating artists at The Old Workshop Gallery, Corpusty, NR11 6QP from 13th May - 4th June Open Weds - Sat 10am - 4 50pm, Sun 1pm - 4 50pm Bank Holiday Mon 10am - 2 30pm It will be an opportunity to preview some of the work and plan your studio visits
North Norfolk Studios co-operative was formed in 2020 and has held popular Open Studios events for the past two years
This year ’s Chair, Pia Henderson, said: “North Norfolk Studios is an artists’ co-operative teeming with talent This year we have new venues,
new trails and therefore we are showcasing even more work It has been an honour to meet and engage with my fellow makers and experience the huge variety of artistic output North Norfolk offers. I have had a rich and rewarding year, and I hope your visits will provide similar nourishment”
The artists are all looking forward to welcoming you to their studios again this year It’s a chance to meet artists and talk to them about their work, as well as to see what they have to offer and to buy from them directly

YOU IN FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES
After supporting our community for over 2 ½ years, we are now in need of your support The aim of the Cromer Community Fridge and Larder at Merchants’ Place is to provide emergency food support to local people, as well as essential household items, cleaning products, toiletries, baby items and more We rely solely on donations to offer this support, which has, unfortunately, experienced a dramatic decrease in recent weeks
Yesterday’s Learners and Labourers
Here is another book by Geoffrey Dixon in the Yesterday’s series for us to enjoy
It picks up the stories of our well-known and well-loved characters from previous books and takes them into 1957 The experiences of John, George, Arthur and Charlie who work on Mr Whitlow’s farm, are supported by customers at Phyllis Pegg’s Post Office and General Stores, the patrons of the Buckrake pub, the supporters of the village hall, plus the extra revelation of Miss Sybil Shaw at the village school
As always it is interesting to go back in time a little bit and share in our minds how things were just sixty-five years ago Not many of us are fortunate enough to work on the land but we can see what is happening on the fields of Norfolk today Our health, both mental and physical, is conditioned by what is happening in our environment and it is interesting to just read, reflect, and wonder about life in our villages now and then Were villages much more lively and full of people in those days?
The school in the village in 1957 was a very different place to those of today Rows of desks, a blackboard and easel, maybe a large radio on a shelf and plenty of books were all the equipment that the teacher had to use to help the children learn Maybe not so many things to learn then, but the children were busy and emerged from school content and able to be sensible and good members of their community
Yes, plenty of things to think about, but even more, this book is another that will usher us back to a less stressful time and we can smile with some of the characters and feel at one with them as they have to live with perhaps a growing family, or little money, or age, or loneliness
No matter how young or old we are, we will find this another book to enjoy and put on the shelf to read again or share with someone else Don’t miss the opportunity to buy one at the shops below
Available at Forrests’ Newsagents in Stalham, The Showcase Gallery in North Walsham or at Jarrold’s Book Shop in Cromer And the price for this wonderful read is still £7 95 It is a price that had not gone up since the first book!
We have been very lucky to have received monetary donations in order to keep the Fridge and Larder stocked; however, this is now coming to end, and we are finding it even more difficult to keep this much-needed service running Helping over 25 families and individuals a day, we are seeing an ever-increasing demand for emergency help.
If you are having a spring clean and are clearing out your cupboards, please consider donating unwanted items to us at Merchants’ Place If you are able to support us by buying items from local shops to donate, that would be a fantastic help We can also accept monetary donations to buy items to keep the Larder stocked We accept any items that are sealed, in-date and that have the ingredients stated clearly on the label.
This really is an essential service during these uncertain times
The support offered is nonintrusive and provides practical help to those in
need If you can help us in any way, please do get in touch or simply drop donations into our donation bin at the Centre Thank you!

Charlie Finds His Way Home After a Frightening Experience
Charlie, a four-year-old rescue dog, originally from a Romanian shelter, was walking home from a routine visit to Westover vets in North Walsham on Wednesday 26 April with his owner, Rosalie Gibb, when another dog, totally without provocation, lunged, snarling, at him, causing him to leap out of the way, unfortunately slamming into the side of a passing car The other dog was obviously not being controlled by its owner.
Rosalie was pulled over onto her face on the pavement, causing her to let go of Charlie’s lead, who bolted, obviously terrified, across the
Outside the Wire
Norwich Road and down Station Road
From Rosalie’s post on the North Walsham Notice Board Facebook page, so many people shared, searched, really went out of their way to try to get Charlie back home safely, especially as he’d been seen running on three legs so appeared to be injured, including a farmer who got his tractor out to search his fields and Hollie, from GWD Rescue in south Norfolk who drove up to help search for Charlie once it got dark and he’d been missing for several hours
Having nearly given up hope of Charlie being found safely, after more than nine hours of being missing, Charlie returned home by himself at five minutes past midnight on Thursday morning, much to the immense relief of Rosalie and her husband John, apparently none the worse for his ordeal A visit to the vet later that morning confirmed there were no broken bones and
In March a group of ten veterans from North Norfolk Hub joined with a group of twenty veterans from the Norwich Hub for a First World War Battlefield Pilgrimage to the Ypres Salient in Belgium The Outside the Wire Charity, part of the Mathew Project, enabled the visit and Empire Battlefield Tours provided the guiding over four days
Places visited included the Tyne Cot cemetery, Hill 60, Passchendaele and the Menin Gate Memorial, where the names of over fifty-four thousand missing soldiers are inscribed on its walls Since 1928 the last post has sounded here at 8 pm every night, 365 days of the year There was a break for the Second World War when it was played elsewhere The group took part in the service where a wreath was laid in respect of the fallen
injuries amounted to some severe bruising It could have been so much worse
Rosalie said she was absolutely amazed and humbled by the number of people, most of whom who don’t know her or Charlie, who went out of their way to help in so many ways and cannot thank them enough, adding it really does illustrate the caring, community spirit alive and thriving in North Walsham and the surrounding area Nearly one thousand people liked and/or commented on Rosalie’s original fb post, including a request for more photos of Charlie please! Being a really friendly, gentle soul, he already had a big fan club in North Walsham, which has now increased manyfold!

Nor th Walsham and District Br anch of Cats Pr otection
Jumba, the cat mentioned last time, did pass his health check and tested negative to the blood test for FIV/FELV so left us for his new home shortly afterwards. If he had not passed this test, his potential new owners may have needed to choose another cat as all FIV positive cats need an indoor home, either as the only cat or with other cats with FIV Unfortunately, any cat testing positive for FELV must be euthanised as their future health prognosis is not good
Tuppence has also now been rehomed, together with three more of the younger cats in care, Jacob, Jasmine and Juniper. Jodie, another youngster, is still waiting to be chosen although at present she is receiving treatment for an eye infection so is not available She is quite shy so will need a new home with no young children She would probably be happy living with another cat as at present she is missing her companions There has been quite a bit of interest in some of the other cats in care so will keep you updated next time. Please be aware though that not all our cats are featured on the website
We receive many calls for help with stray cats and are always happy to offer advice However, before adding these to our waiting list, it is necessary to make sure that the cat is indeed a stray Providing the cat is friendly Stephanie will suggest taking it to the vets to check for a microchip If the cat is chipped, they will check the microchip company’s records and try to contact the owner to reunite it with its family. If the cat is not chipped the next course of action will be to place paper collars around its neck with the person’s telephone number on so that the owner can contact them Several collars may need to be used as they break quite easily Only after all avenues have been explored to find an owner should the cat be placed on the waiting list to come into care
From past experience we know that many of these strays do have a home and it would be very distressing for their family if they were just taken
into care without the finder
trying to locate them

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858 Could callers please call at a reasonable time as the phone is in Stephanie’s home It is not very pleasant to be woken during the night by someone ringing with a cat related query
Kane, lovely friendly boy, looking for a home without other cats and dogs
Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www northwalsham cats org uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home
We are on Facebook You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham
Hedgehog Haven
TM, pictured, has come into care with a nasty injury on one of his ears, left untreated it could then lead to serious infection This could have been caused by fighting with another hog or getting caught on something.
Please be aware when gardening, just check the edges of longer grass for sleeping hogs
Lots of hogs who came in underweight over the winter have now been collected by their finders to be released back into the wild, hopefully to find a mate to help boost their dwindling numbers.
As the National Hedgehog Awareness Week has clashed with the Coronation, we will be doing a Hedgehog Awareness Day a bit later on Saturday 27th May between 10am to 3pm at North Walsham Garden Centre, depending on the hogs in care, there might be one in attendance, but I cannot say for certain

North Walsham Good Neighbours
A brain teasing evening was enjoyed by many of the North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme volunteers when their recent AGM was followed by a quiz and fish and chip supper
A well-attended meeting heard a very positive report from chairman. Richard Barker Despite the problems we have all faced during the last twelve months, the volunteers had continued their brilliant work responding to requests from our local community During the year we received 820 individual requests of which 78% (650) were completed, 16% were withdrawn and for just 6% we were unable to meet the request or signpost to another service As of 19 April, we had 653 neighbours who had used our services including 92 who had been added this past year
Individual jobs varied hugely – everything from changing a light bulb to clearing accumulated rubbish. The most frequent requests are for lifts, a trend continuing from the previous year, no doubt reflecting efforts being made by the NHS to get through their backlog Appointments at short notice or unusual times mean normal transport services may not always be available In addition to the individual requests, we continue to provide a very significant befriending service through phone calls and visits. Over the year 56 neighbours received 672 calls totalling 196 hours and 414 visits totalled around 400 hours
We continue to search for constructive ways of supporting and involving neighbours, and we are always open to collaboration with partners to address any pressing issues. Thanks to the kind support of the local free papers, we are able to get our message out to many of those potentially needing help and, to this end, we participate in many local events Richard thanked all the volunteers, the hard-working committee and the duty co-ordinators for their sterling efforts with special thanks to volunteer Matt Smith who keeps our IT operating
Following informative reports from other officers the meeting was
PROVIDING FRIENDLY, EXPERIENCED & PROFESSIONAL VETERINARY CARE TO THE ANIMALS OF NORFOLK FOR OVER 125 YEARS
brought to a close and the serious part of the evening – a challenging quiz and a hot supper was enjoyed by everyone

Top Tips with Toll Barn Vets
- Exotic Birds (Part 3) - Health
As many birds are considered prey species they are adept at hiding illness This means that often by the time signs become obvious the bird has already been unwell for quite a while
To help keep our feathery friends in tip top condition it is worth looking out for:
• Signs your bird looks subdued and is not interacting as they normally would
• He or she has laboured breathing this is easiest to see by look for bobbing of the tail during breathing
• Feathers changes such as being fluffed up, dull, matted or there are missing feathers
• Signs of lethargy
• Lack of interest in food and toys
• Sitting at the bottom of the cage
• Change in the consistency or colour of faeces/droppings
It is a good idea to weigh your bird regularly as often weight loss or gain will be a subtle signs something isn’t right Birds can be trained to stand on an artificial perch on a set of scales, so are easy to weigh regularly with a little encouragement
Training your bird to take feeds rom a syringe can be a lifesaver when it comes to medicating them n the future, the less ndling and stress you put your k bird through the quicker they hopefully recover irds shouldn’t require routine worm or parasite treatment but if you’re worried, pop in a pooled sample (faeces collected from 3-5 days of droppings) so the vet can check to see if treatment is warranted. If your bird is itching, a trip to the vets to assess for external
parasites is of benefit before treating ce the likelihood of medications
l Barn Vets has a dedicated highly skilled team that can help you with any health issues you and your feathered friend may stumble across.

Editor ’s Recipe
There’s nothing like sitting down with a cup of tea and a biscuit to unwind and de-stress It gets even better when you make your own biscuits This recipe beats shop bought biscuits by a mile and are so simple to make Not just to have with tea, they are a lovely addition to have with ice cream or, if you are feeling really decadent, you could sandwich them together with buttercream or jam for a teatime treat You will need 2 flat baking sheets lined with baking parchment and an electric hand mixer or stand mixer for best results You will also need a large piping bag and open star nozzle
Butter Biscuits
Makes approx 16 biscuits
Ingredients
200g butter, softened
100g icing sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon salt
2 egg whites
290g plain flour
Cheeky Chickpeas!
For those of you who have never delved into the delights of chickpeas, here’s a great recipe to ease you in without too much of a shock This is so ridiculously easy to do, and so cheap, that I’m kicking myself for not trying it before! Needless to say, these savoury pancakes are now a regular fixture in our suppers and lunches Chickpea, or Besan / Gram flour, can be bought in most supermarkets, health food stores and delicatessens for between £1 and £2 only, and a little goes a long way You can make all sorts of interesting things with it, such as falafel or bhaji, but this recipe is by far the easiest way to make the most of a great ingredient The great thing about this is you can roll up anything you like in it and it will taste delicious; our favourite is bean chilli, which again is
Preheat your oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6 In a large bowl combine the butter, icing sugar, vanilla and salt with a spatula, then whisk together with an electric whisk for 3-4 minutes, scraping down the bowl midway to ensure everything is well mixed and fluffy (Whisking for this long makes the biscuits nice and crumbly) Add the 2 egg whites and whisk again until you have a smooth, creamy mixture (This will look curdled to begin with but keep going)
Next start adding the flour in 2-3 batches and fold in with a spatula until you have a soft and smooth dough Fill your piping bag with the dough and pipe it in rosettes onto your lined baking sheets, leaving space between each biscuit as they will spread in the oven.
Bake for about 12 minutes, until golden brown Place on a wire rack to cool and firm up
Get the kettle on and enjoy!
cheap as chips and keeps for days in the fridge This is also gluten free for anyone who struggles with wheat and can be whipped up in no time at all for any unexpected vegans who might call round! I’ve added a little turmeric into the mix for a bit more flavour that works well with the filling, but feel free to leave it out; it works just as well without it
Savoury Chickpea Pancakes
1 cup chickpea flour
1 and ½ cups warm water
Pinch salt
Pinch pepper
½ tsp ground turmeric (optional)
A little oil
0.062 FOOD MILES ON OUR VEG
Jo – editor
Add all dry ingredients to a bowl and whisk in the water until it is all combined Leave to thicken for at least 15 minutes You will need a good non-stick pan for this to work well Brush a little oil into the bottom and heat the pan up on high. Whisk the batter again. Turn down to a medium high heat and pour in enough to cover the bottom of the pan Cook for approximately 3 mins, or until the underneath is starting to colour Using a large spatula, flip the pancake, and cook for a further 1 minute on the other side Put onto a warm plate and cover with a clean tea towel while you cook the rest (this recipe makes 3-4) Once they are all done, fill them with your favourite filling, roll up and munch!
Suggested fillings:
Make some simple guacamole which goes well with most fillings:
• Mash up a ripe avocado with a couple of good pinches of smoked paprika and garlic salt and squeeze half a lime over and mix well Spread some hummus down the middle, add guacamole, bean chilli, and top with diced salad, drizzle with a little mayo and roll
• Any leftover meat such as chicken, with chopped peppers, spring onions, halved cherry tomatoes and a drizzle of balsamic glaze
• Leave out the turmeric, and stuff with feta cheese, chopped salad, olives, fresh herbs and a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar
• Fry up some chopped smoked bacon with chopped onion in a little oil and add in some chopped cooked new potatoes. Season well and add a little smoked paprika for a quick hash filling
• Fry up some minced beef and finely chopped onion, add in some chilli powder and smoked paprika and a tin of kidney beans for a quick filling Moisten with a little sweet chilli sauce

Are mirror wills right for us?
by Victoria Wells, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr
If you are married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting with a long term partner, and thinking of making or updating your will, you may have heard the expression ‘mirror wills’ and wonder if this would be suitable for you
Mirror wills are wills made by two or more people in identical or very similar terms –effectively mirroring each other ’s arrangements
For many couples, mirror wills may be the most appropriate option, but you should always check with a legal professional as some circumstances might mean that mirror wills are not the best approach for you.
What are mirror wills?
Mirror wills are used to ensure that everything you own passes according to the shared wishes of both parties A typical set up for mirror wills is for everything to pass to the surviving partner, and then after they die everything will pass to those people or charities that you both chose together
How are mirror wills used?
Mirror wills are particularly useful for those in second marriages or with children from previous relationships, as they help to ensure that both sides of the family are treated fairly and equally
If you decide to make separate wills and you do not mirror your wishes, any money or property passing to the survivor after the first death, will then ultimately pass according only to their wishes
Advantages of mirror wills
Mirror wills are useful to protect the interests of the survivor as well as the remaining family of the first person to die
For married couples and those in a civil partnership, mirror wills are also likely to be beneficial for the purpose of inheritance tax, as including each other as beneficiaries initially allows you to take advantage of the tax free allowances available
Disadvantages of mirror wills
Mirror wills do not come with any assurance that the survivor will not change their will, make a new will, or remarry following the first death
Before making your mirror wills, it is imperative that you completely trust one another to stick by any joint decisions you make once one of you is no longer alive As there is no legal obligation on the survivor to retain the terms of the mirror wills, they could simply make a new will leaving everything to beneficiaries of their own choosing, such as their own biological children As such, mirror
MEET OUR FAMILY LAW TEAM
wills might not be suitable if there is any element of distrust or if your families do not get along.
It is also important to note that any later marriage or civil partnership would automatically revoke the survivor ’s will As such, your jointly chosen beneficiaries could miss out even if this is not the survivor ’s intention. If the survivor does remarry, they should seek legal advice to ensure that their will continues to accurately reflect your joint wishes
How can we help?
Mirror wills are often a good option, but this is dependent on your individual circumstances, and you should seek legal advice before making any new will.

Library turns
55 in May
Saturday 6th May is an important date for the whole country this year but there is another local celebration coming up in May as North Walsham Library turns 55 on 23rd May.
The library was officially opened on its current site on that day in 1968 by Mrs M A Clifton Brown, O B E, who was the Chairperson of the County Library Committee The official brochure tells us that the new library would offer “14 000 books to attract readers of all tastes and interests. For the first time in North Walsham, special provision has been made for children and there is a study area containing reference books and a basic collection of local history material A mobile library will operate from here to serve the North-East corner of the County and a garage, store and office have been provided” The branch librarian was a Mr Andrew Kett.
Fast forward 55 years and North Walsham Library is an integral part of the community, not only providing books but also public computers, printing services, regular activities and a meeting place for local groups Do you remember the grand opening of the library? Or indeed do you have other memories of the library you would like to share with us? The staff are planning a celebratory display and would love to hear from customers past and present You can email the library at north walsham lib@libraries norfolk gov uk or call in to fill one of the memory slips available in branch
North Walsham Library News
Our vibrant and busy library is at the heart of the community we serve, where everyone can expect a warm and inclusive welcome
Of course, you can still browse and borrow books, but we offer so much more, and it is all free! We offer regular activities for children and their families, such as Bounce and Rhyme, Mini Movers and Colouring Club. We also organise social events for adults, like Scrabble and our extremely popular Just A Cuppa and Knit and Natter clubs Local groups take advantage of our free facilities to run reading groups, writing workshops and a chess club
Ensuring that everyone has access to digital services is incredibly important to us, and visitors can use our public computers and scanners free of charge There is a small charge for printing, but if you’re struggling with the often-complicated world of IT, we offer digital support sessions twice a week
With the cost of living rising, we are helping where we can by providing Tricky Periods bags, with no questions asked Other services we offer include baby weighing scales, bus timetables, blue badge forms, and friendly, knowledgeable staff who can help by signposting people to other services
We also offer a range of special events and workshops throughout the year For example, in April we hosted an Autism Just a Cuppa for Adults and a British Sign Language course In the week leading to the Coronation, we hosted coronation themed versions of our Bounce & Rhyme, Just a Cuppa and Colouring Clubs.
To keep up to date with our events, pick up a flyer in the library, or follow us on Facebook, find us under North Walsham Library
Weather Outlook
May will continue the mixed weather features of April and temperatures will only recover slowly but after mid-month we should start to see more sustained fair weather with temperatures more representative of the second half of May
June will continue the trend developing in the second half of May, but although by now the mass of cold air that built up over Arctic regions as early as August last year will be all but gone, any airstream coming down the North Sea across a still cold North Sea will certainly be noticeable

Sheringham & District Philatelic Society
We were pleased to welcome one new member at our April meeting, and a couple who came to see whether or not they would like to join us We very much hope that we will see them again in May!
6 members presented a tremendous variety of mainly 10 sheet displays Mike Clarke, a lifetime GB collector, brought along a selection of surface printed, Victorian stamps on covers, which had recently taken his interest. Tony Taylor put up part of an old competition entry of his, of Queen Elizabeth 11 3d Wildings There were blocks, booklet panes, watermark variations and printing errors amongst them
Jane Purkiss has always taken a great interest in anything philatelic relating to Captain James Cook and, this time, she showed us her collection of Cook Island stamps, some dating back to 1893 Early stamps were overprinted New Zealand stamps, before these 15 islands in the south Pacific became self-governing
Tim Harvey’s interest is more in his postcard collection, and he displayed a wonderful group of cards which demonstrated the growth of Cromer as a tourist destination In the early days, Cromer was known as The Gentlemen’s Watering Hole
a place where the wealthy came for sea air With the arrival of the railways and the publication of Clement Scott’s poem, The Garden of Sleep, Cromer ’s popularity grew Postcards were produced illustrating all aspects of this glorious seaside town
Andrew McCandlish brought the evening to a close with stamps from Azerbaijan, Poland in exile in WW2 and Albania, giving us the fascinating historical details which lay behind these stamps
Next meeting is on 15th May, at West Runton Church Hall at 7 30pm Visitors are welcome. For more information, please contact Jim on 01263 721043

Air Cadets Flying High
Mid-April saw four cadets, Max Bedford (14), Sumitta Hicks (14), Killian O’Hara (15) and Michael Swindells (15) gliding at 644 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, RAF Syerston This is the first gliding North Walsham cadets have been able to do in several years for a variety of reasons, not least, Covid
After a very early start and long drive arriving in thick fog the day turned out clear and warm and the four cadets, plus two from Cromer Squadron, enjoyed long flights in perfect weather Winched to over a thousand feet the cadets, all making their first flights, took control whilst the glider rode the thermals Hopefully, in future there will be greater opportunity for cadets to go gliding without
the long trek to Nottinghamshire as gliding commences at RAF Honington, Suffolk Flight Lieutenant Alan Stevens, who took the cadets to Syerston, said “This is a great first step for the cadets, perhaps leading to a career in civil or military aviation Potentially cadets can win a scholarship to go solo and gain their pilot’s licence ” The officer commanding 644 VGS, Squadron Leader Chris Moore, had been one of Flt Lt Stevens’ cadets Having gained a scholarship, he went on to be an instructor at Syerston Then, having taken a commission he is now the commanding officer.
For the next generation of cadets, the sky really is the limit!
If the Air Cadets interest you see the 2110 (North Walsham) Squadron web site or contact the Flt Lt Alan Stevens via email at
oc 2110@rafac mod gov uk North Walsham
Air Cadets normally parade every Monday and Thursday, at North Walsham Primary School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm till 9 30pm and welcomes all young people aged between 12 and 17 years Currently recruiting cadets and adult volunteers

Appeal for Volunteer Beach Wardens to Support Rare Wildlife
This spring, Norfolk Wildlife Trust is on the search for volunteer wardens to help protect and monitor rare birds at NWT Holme Dunes nature reserve, on the North Norfolk coast, and its neighbouring beaches.
Over half of England’s most threatened breeding birds nest on the ground and for some, including ringed plover, little tern and oystercatcher, Norfolk’s coastline is a vital stronghold during the spring and summer After a long journey – in the case of little terns from Africa – the birds settle down on our coast to raise a family During this time, they face many challenges including disturbance, rising sea levels and predators.
In the last 35 years, the population of ringed plovers in Norfolk has declined by a shocking 79 per cent, with just 123 pairs recorded in 2018 Norfolk is the most important county in the UK for nesting little terns
In 2021 almost half of the UK population (roughly 691 pairs) of these birds were attempting to nest across the North and East of Norfolk Oystercatcher numbers are also dropping, seeing them join the little tern on the Amber list of conservation concern
To help beach-nesting bird populations to recover, organisations such as Norfolk Wildlife Trust protect and monitor these avian tourists during their annual visit to our shores, with the support of volunteer beach wardens To help give these special birds enough space to raise their families Norfolk Wildlife Trust are keen for Holme Dunes beach visitors to understand the need to keep a distance from special fenced-off nesting areas on the beach, to be vigilant for the tiny chicks that may be feeding on the shoreline, and to keep their dogs under effective control
Tori Backham, Assistant Warden at NWT Holme Dunes, explains: “Our beach wardens act as guardians to our vulnerable beach-nesting birds
They support our wildlife by patrolling the beaches, helping the public to understand the importance of looking after these special species, as well as recording bird behaviour and nesting activity
“This vital work would not be
possible without the help of a band of friendly, enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers If you feel passionate about making a difference and you have some spare time to give, we’d love to hear from you It’s such an important job and an incredibly beautiful setting – there's really no better place to be!” Norfolk Wildlife Trust are looking for people with a passion for wildlife who enjoy talking to the public The role doesn’t require you to have background knowledge of the birds and their behaviours as training will be provided by Norfolk Wildlife Trust
For more information, visit www.norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk/volunteering or email Alan: alanm@norfolkwildlifetrust org uk

Would you like to have it removed in a painless, scar less way with the latest technology? Fractional laser Tattoo removal and other new developments are here.
In many parts of the world greater than 15% of adults have tattoos
It is estimated that 50% of those receiving tattoos will want to have them removed within 10 years of their application. Tattoos can have negative associations and can be a hindrance in obtaining certain jobs
Coltishall Clinic have announced the arrival of new high powered lasers
Now we have added another fractional Q-switched Nd-Yag laser ‘ the
01603 736487
gold-standard tattoo removal laser’ which will help us remove most colours in tattoos, but also treat people with deeper pigmentation and sun spots” What methods of Tattoo Removal are available?
We must stress that older methods of tattoo removal are now outdated and have been replaced by better technology. These methods included dermabrasion, chemical peels, destruction of tattoo ink by various forms of injectable substances These methods used to remove the part of skin with the tattoo! The results were less than desirable due to unacceptable scarring and poor cosmetic outcome
Why are Q switched Tattoo Removal lasers so good?
Q switched lasers produce very high powered and short nanosecond [one billionth of a second] pulses of light that shatter and disperse pigment particles without damaging the skin Consequently ink particles are removed and surrounding skin is not damaged This dramatically reduces the risk of scarring We have 5 dedicated lasers for this
What is fractional Laser Tattoo Removal treatment?
This is the newest technology that allows us to drill microscopic holes in the tattoo allowing for much better ink clearance
Is the Laser Tattoo Removal treatment permanent?
Yes Doctors and Laser therapists at the Coltishall Clinic have many years experience with IPL and lasers We specialise in ‘no downtime’ gentle laser facials to more invasive laser resurfacing procedures and ‘knifeless’ laser surgery for lumps, bumps and skin tags in addition to botox, dermal fillers, leg vein treatments and full range of cosmetic surgery
For Laser Tattoo or pigment removal contact Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic 01603 736487 or http://www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

Is your Tattoo stopping you from moving forward in life?
On 8th April 2023, North Walsham Play held a spectacular Egg Hunt in Memorial Park, which saw over 400 children from the local community come together for a morning of fun and eggcitement
Organised and run by North Walsham Play,
Along the Way
Easter Egg Hunt Cracks It
the event was a massive success, with children eagerly searching for clues hidden around the park The event raised over £2200, which will go towards supporting the charity's mission to provide safe and fun play spaces for children in North Walsham
The Egg Hunt featured a range of activities that were perfect for children of all ages Miniature Donkeys for Wellbeing and Berts Amazing Creatures were new attractions for 2023, which added to the excitement and enjoyment of the day The children were thrilled to see and interact with the animals, and it was a highlight of the day for many
On top of this, all children were able to have their faces painted, collect a balloon model and last but by no means least, collect their Easter hamper after successfully completing the egg hunt.
North Walsham Play's Chairman, Matthew Smith MBE, said, "We are thrilled with the success of the Egg Hunt It was a fantastic day that brought together the local community, and we're delighted to have raised such a significant amount of money This is a real team effort from everyone linked with North Walsham Play The support we received from local businesses and volunteers was incredible,
and we are grateful to everyone who helped make the event such a success "
I would also like to add my thanks to North Walsham Community Shop, Carl Bird Skip Hire, Mindcom Investments and Scribe Accounts for their kind donations towards the costs of running our 2023 Egg Hunt

Barton House Railway History
Barton House Railway has been in operation and raising funds for good causes for 60 years
The first section of the 31/2-inch gauge railway was laid in the grounds of Barton House in 1960. A circular track was completed and opened in April 1963 to raise money for Wroxham Church Restoration Fund In 1979 the first section of the 71/4- inch gauge Riverside Railway was laid During the winter of 1980/81 the line was extended, this provided a loop from riverside to riverside with Wroxham in the middle
In 1992 Wroxham station area was rebuilt with two platforms to allow trains to pass Also, by now the railway had obtained the signal box from Honing, which was moved piece by piece to Barton House We were able to celebrate the original opening on 23rd June 1901 and in 2007 we celebrated 40 years at Barton House, still controlling trains
In 2003 an M&GN museum was established and contains an operating model railway based on Honing M&GN station of the period 2009 saw a new platform canopy was erected using original cast iron posts from Yarmouth Beach station During this period the original 31/2- inch gauge railway received a major rebuild. The steam loco`s were retired and at present use an electric loco
In 2015 we introduced `drive an engine` for the young ones on a separate piece of track
We now celebrate 60 years of operation Each year the railway has supported a different national or local charity
The railway is running on the third Sunday of each month April to October For full details please see the website: www bhrw org uk
