We all brought our packed lunches too for when we were trapped in! You may have seen some interesting changes to the pier during the filming. Continued on page 6...

Partridge on the Pier Continued from front cover...

You may have even worried that the theatre had gone a little ‘high brow’ with posters for Shakespeare plays in the box office windows. Or that you would be unable to exit the pier after a show as gates had been installed. These were all set dressings for the film. The gates at the front of the pier featured in the script, yet normally we have no gates. The art team installed them, painted and aged them so that they looked like there had always been there. It’s all very clever! All of our posters had to be replaced by pretend shows for copyright reasons. (We were expecting a few phone calls from people trying to book for Hamlet!) but don’t worry our spring/summer season will run as scheduled in your latest Cromer Pier Live brochure. The white shelters on the pier were also transformed into a shooting gallery and a coconut shy. They looked great and left us wanting to keep them!

The scene being shot on the pier saw a police chase sequence and even gun fire. The top of the slopes outside the Hotel De Paris was filled with police and their cars, blue lights flashing and all. These were mostly all extras and fake police cars, but there were some real police around to help keep people from coming on to the pier or slopes. We enjoyed a good game of ‘Spot the real police man’ through the windows in the office.

All in all it was a great experience for us and Norfolk in general. Cromer's mayor, Gwendoline Smith, said use of the locations will attract visitors and be "good for the economy". And with 140 people descending on Cromer in the winter it has been good business for the local hotels too, in a usually quite season. Filming is also taking place in Sheringham and Norwich, so benefiting the wider area also.

So if you are a fan of Alan Partridge, or even if you are not. The film is due for release in cinemas in August. They should be sets for good returns at the box office, as most of the residents of Cromer will go just to see the pier!

It is great that we can be involved in something like this and in so doing supporting the talented British film industry. And of course Norfolk and our Pier will look beautiful up on the big screen. It’s enough to make you quite proud.

Roasted confit of Norfolk Gressingham Hoi Sin Duck from head chef at The Grove - Gary Parrett We have a great Easter coming up at the Grove, with a Good Friday Fish Night, the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday (perfect for kids) and a superb selection of best Icarus Hines’ roasts for Sunday lunch – phone to book on 01263512412.

This is a lovely starter that’s extremely popular whenever it’s on, and will certainly be featuring throughout the Easter period. When it first appeared the manager made a small mistake on the menu, and word spread that The Grove was serving the most delicious hoi-sin Guck (much to the amusement of both our diners and our front-of-house staff). However, this Gressingham duck is the best around and I love cooking with it.

Serves two

Ingredients: 2 Gressingham duck legs

(available at Icarus Hines)

1 small jar of duck fat 1 white onion (diced)

Cromer Times 417 March 16th 2013

1 carrot (diced) 1 leek (diced) 1 stick celery (sliced) 1 litre vegetable oil 20g Chinese five spice 20g-35g Jubberwacky plum sauce

(available at Cromer Farm and Health Shop)

to serve-

I spring onion finely sliced 200g cucumber (diced)

Method: Take both duck legs and trim around the top of the leg joint to remove the tendons. This will ensure the duck stays nice and tender thoroughout the cooking process. Removing the tendon makes it less likely for the leg to contract throughout the cooking process, keeping it nice and tender. Place all the duck, the vegetables, the oil and duck fat in a saucepan and simmer for

six hours on a low heat - confiting the duck in the process. The oil will be very hot so remove the duck with a pair of tongs and drain the excess oil in a colander or cooling rack. Once the duck has cooled a little (but not all the way) strip, discard any fat and shred. Put the duck on a roasting tray and sprinkle the Chinese five spices over. Roast until the duck is crispy, and while still warm add the delicious Jubberwacky plum sauce.

This can be served with your spring onion and cucumber as a salad, or you could even make some pancakes to go with it.

The best thing about this dish is you now have the remaining oil and duck fat for roasting your potatoes for your Easter Sunday lunch (if you haven’t booked to have it with us!)

Souvenir exhibition at Henry Blogg Museum

The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer is excited to welcome visitors to a special exhibition this Easter holiday. Keepsakes, Key Rings and Kiss Me Quick! : A History of Souvenirs will run from the 29 March to 14 April at the museum.

The exhibition looks at the history of souvenirs and considers what makes objects special to us. An event held on the 23 February encouraged visitors to bring in their own mementos, especially any straw donkeys! The chosen highlights from this day are now on display alongside their personal stories.

Sadly no donkeys appeared but an interesting variety of souvenirs were discovered. These include Keith Wiles’ beautiful Cromer related milk jug, Cromer lifeboat crew member Paul Russell’s collection of RNLI souvenirs and souvenir secretary Victor Brett’s 1960s lifeboat man doll.

A brass ‘Escape’ sign salvaged from the SS. Teddington and mounted upon a carved wooden block also forms part of the exhibition. The Teddington was a steamship attacked by German aircraft in 1941. The plaque was retrieved from the ship by a fireman, given to Jack Rounce from the lifeboat committee and later donated to the museum. The plaque has become a decorative ornament showing how events are commemorated.

Keepsakes, Key Rings and Kiss Me Quick will make an entertaining visit for all the family and includes plenty of child friendly activities. There will be dressing up hats, an interactive Seaside Sally, a Punch and Judy theatre and visitors will be able to design their own postcard.

Drop-in creative sessions will also run on Saturday 9 and Saturday 16 April. These will take place throughout the day between 10am and 4pm. Visitors will be able to create their own Seaside Sallys which consist of decorated frames with peep-holes for the face. It will be a real chance for children, and their parents, to get crafty.

Museum Manager Jacqui Palmer said: ‘This is a very exciting exhibition which displays the RNLI collection alongside souvenirs from the public. We look forward to hearing people’s responses and hope they will find it interactive and engaging.’

Rebecca Fletcher, Exhibitions Assistant said: ‘It has been great to work on this exhibition especially as it has involved so many wonderful stories. I hope it will prove enjoyable for all.’

Admission to the museum is free, but donations are always appreciated. Please remember that the museum is closed on Mondays.

Rock Bodham launches its lineup for 2013

Rock Bodham launched its full line up for 2013 to a packed crowd at The Crown Inn, Sheringham last month, with a live performance by Johnny Romance and the Lovers plus a special set from DJ Hagster.

Now in its second year, Rock Bodham was set up to showcase local live music from all over Norfolk and this year features eight live bands. Rock Bodham, which takes place on Sunday 21 July on Bodham Playing Field, is part of Bodham Big Weekend which runs from the evening of Friday 19 July through to Sunday afternoon 21 July with a feast of activities for all the family.

The first Bodham Big Weekend, set up by Chairman Peter Bedell and a team of community stalwarts, took place in 2008 and coupled the original Village Fete alongside an evening of live music.

Peter said ‘In 2012 Rock Bodham was formed as part of Bodham Big Weekend and the rest is history. The Big Weekend has gone from strength to strength and 2012 was the largest event in Bodham's History. 2013? We can't wait!’

Bodham Big Weekend Sunday Funday begins at 12noon and is followed by Rock Bodham which runs from 4pm – 11pm on 21 July. Rock Bodham was started by local music promoter Ben Carpenter, Callum Ringer and Peter Bedell to expand Bodham Big Weekend and to showcase hidden talents from across Norfolk.

This year’s line up includes The Yows Yows, BrickRed Cardio, Drop the Clutch, Jake

Morrell, Kamikaze Radio, The Wreckoning, Johnny Romance and the Lovers, JackDaniel and DJ Hagster.

The audience can expect a day filled with entertainment and live music from a variety of different acts, with feedback from 2012 overwhelmingly positive, organisers are looking forward to this year’s event. Ceridwen Smee who attended in 2012 said “having witnessed the vibrant, eclectic mix of fantastic live music I was thrilled to have attended the jam packed day set in some of Norfolk’s most beautiful countryside. Unique, fun and appealing to all ages it is amazing value for money.

In 2012 six bands played to over 800 people. Darryl Bliss, drummer from Drop the Clutch who also played in 2012 said ‘It was great to be a part of Rock Bodham last year and we're really chuffed to be invited back again this summer. When you spend your time playing late at night in pubs and clubs you don't get to play to such a mixed audience, which for us makes this a cracking event. It's an ideal opportunity for local people to see some amazing local talent too, and maybe it will influence some of the youngsters to take up an instrument, get practicing, join a band and get on stage’

It is hoped that in 2013, with an expanded line up of live music, Rock Bodham will be even more successful for the village. With ticket prices only ÂŁ2 for adults and free for U12s it is a fabulous event for all the family to enjoy. A BBQ and bar will be available from 12 noon. Organiser Ben Carpenter said ‘Rock Bodham is dedicated to the local music scene giving bands a chance to get a feel of what it's like to play a mini festival. All acts and volunteers have given their time up for free. So if you are a fan of entertainment and live music then this is for you, it truly is a wonderful event, so be sure to come along and support it’

Monies raised over the whole weekend will go towards Bodham village causes such as the Playing Field, the Church and Village Hall as well as a meal for the village OAPs and a Children’s Christmas Party. A donation will also be made to Holt First Responders who cover the event.

Ceridwen went on to say ‘I simply can’t wait to rock it out this year with my family and I shall not hesitate to rave to others and spreading the word that Rock Bodham 2013 will most definitely be one event not to miss!’

Rock Bodham is sponsored by Starlings Toymaster for the second year running. Jon Starling from Starlings Toymaster said about the event ‘it was such a popular event last year I can see this year being even bigger. Not only are we sponsoring because the event raises money for local causes but because the event lets lots of up and coming local talent play a big stage which they otherwise wouldn’t get the chance to do. Being a musician myself I understand how important this is. We’re really excited about being part of this mini festival!’ The event is also sponsored by Sanders Coaches who will be putting on a bus to get people home after Rock Bodham. From 11.15pm Sanders Coaches will be running buses for only ÂŁ1 to Cromer, Sheringham and Holt.

Other sponsors for both the Big Weekend and Rock Bodham include The Crown Inn, Sheringham, CT Baker, Graphic Edge Crayford & Abbs and local residents.

Bodham Big Weekend and Rock Rodham would like to thank all the artists and sponsors who are giving up their time for free to help this village event along with committee members and many volunteers from the village who make the day such a success.

Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society (SCCS) are delighted to announce that the Society has been awarded a Grants for the Arts funding award of £31,110 by Arts Council England towards the costs of commissioning and performing a major new choral work from the renowned composer (and former Classic FM composer-in-residence) Patrick Hawes who lives nearby in north Norfolk.

Grants for the Arts awards are for activities carried out over a set period and which engage people in England in arts activities, and help artists and arts organisations in England carry out their work. Such support is crucial to the success of this project and the Choral Society is now seeking additional grants and sponsorship to cover the remaining costs.

Nathan Waring, Musical Director, said “This Arts Council England funding makes it possible for us to move ahead with a tremendously exciting opportunity for our choral society here in north Norfolk . As the Society celebrates its 80th anniversary we prepare to break fresh ground. This is definitely a once in a life-time opportunity and we are hugely honoured that Patrick Hawes has chosen to work with us. As a community choir we intend to involve as many local people as possible in this project. I am particularly pleased that Patrick intends to involve a children’s choir alongside the approx. 100 adult singers in our choir. We expect there to be very close collaboration between Patrick Hawes, SCCS and Gresham’s throughout the composition, rehearsal and performance process.”

The new work will be performed for the first time in 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WW1. Based upon Edith Cavell’s own notes and annotations in her personal copy of Thomas a Kempis’ Of the Imitation of It is the intention that the new work Christ, the composition will be large will be published and made extensively Foreground: Patrick Hawes scale choral work with solo soprano, available to other choirs in the hope Behind: L-R Bob Cumber (Chairman), Sylvia Levete chorus, children’s choir and chamber that it will be widely performed (Concert Manager), Nathan Waring (Musical Director) orchestra and organ. THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER SPRING IRISES

The Iris is a genus of about 300 species of upright, rhizomatous or bulbous, sometimes fleshy rooted perennials.

The leaves are arranged in fans, sometimes variegated, and the flowers have six tepals (a word used for sepals or petals when they are not easily distinguished). They are grown mainly for their distinctive flowers produced in spring or summer. Taller cultivars are suitable for mixed or herbaceous borders, the smaller cultivars for rock gardens, raised beds and troughs and water irises for the margins of pools and streams.

At this time of year it is the brave, bright flowers of the early flowering bulbous irises that bring life to the gardens. Whatever the weather in late winter or early spring clumps of these brave, bright flowers are ideal for banishing the winter blues. To see them poking

irises are not heavily scented and would combine well with winter-flowering violas in containers.

through a blanket of snow is a joy. They are quite simply indispensable and fortunately relatively cheap and widely available either as dry bulbs to plant in early autumn or growing in pots at this time of the year, all ready to bloom.

Cultivation notes • Grow in well – drained, neutral or slightly alkaline soil in full sun.

• Keep just moist during dormant period.

• After flowering, feed with a high potash fertiliser to encourage large bulbs to form

Recommended varieties include ‘George’. Sturdy rich purple flowers are borne in early spring. 12cm. ‘Harmony’. Royal –blue flowers with a yellow central mark on each fall. 10-15 cm. ‘Major’. Deep blue flowers ‘Joyce’. Deep sky-blue flowers ‘Iris danfordiae’. Yellow flowers with greenish yellow markings on the fall. ‘Katharine Hodgkin’. Delicately patterned blue flowers with yellow and blue marks on the fall. ‘Cantab’. Pale blue flowers with deeper blue falls, each with a yellow crest. ‘J.S.Dijt’. • Slugs and snails may be a problem, as may grey mould and thrips.

• Bulbs planted in potscan be brought into the house to flower but not until the buds show colour to avoid them drying out.

• Most of these bulbs usually flower well, but after flowering once, some break up into bulblets of varying sizes. The largest of these may take one or two years before they get to flowering size, and the smallest may take twice as long.

The early irises associate well with early crocuses and can be used in groups underneath deciduous shrubs such as Daphne mezereum, the fragrant Chimonanthus praecox and the winter noneysuckle Lonicera x purpusii. The

Propagation • Plant Reticula bulbs 5-10 cm apart at a depth twice the height of the bulb, or deeper.

• Lift and separate bulbsin mid-summer to early autumn.

• Sow seed in containers in a cold frame in autumn or spring. Bob Wilkinson

Grumpy Old Man - Medical Affairs

I have had occasion to visit both the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital and the new Cromer Hospital variously in recent times. What a contrast they represent.

The car park at Cromer is always unexpectedly empty perhaps because you have to buy three hours time for two quid, even if you are only nipping in for an x-ray or a blood sample, so the road outside is cluttered with vehicles.

Arrive at Norwich Hospital and it is like trying to park near the football ground on match day.

MOTOR ENGINEERS 01263 515076

Our enormous county hospital is overwhelmed with unremitting demand day and night whereas Cromer Hospital is in reality a part time very posh clinic dealing in the main with blood sampling and x-rays, and takes no strain off the Norfolk & Norwich.

Still, there it is, newly built and very imposing, but A&E and hospital beds are still 30 miles away from us coastal dwellers who still face a long and uncertain wait for an ambulance to get us to Norwich. It is no fun – I have made the trip.

What amazed me most having arrived at A&E was that our ambulance crew were idle for an hour before being freed only after booking in their patient. As I recall there were six ambulances crews queuing up at the same time, all kicking their heels. If the system allowed them to hand over on arrival to a third party to deal with the waiting time they could load on a new trolley and get back on standby. Too simple, I suppose.

Trying to change the NHS is difficult and inefficiency is perpetuated because of apathy. My daughter, 25 years with the NHS, highly qualified and experienced, is wasting her skills now, forced to deputise for a department head who has been on leave for over three years (not in Norfolk). She regularly gets her reports and forms completed on time, but as all the other departments are less efficient, she has, unbelievably, been asked to make late returns so as not to show the other laggards up.

The same principle applies here as GP surgeries no longer take blood samples, but issue an instruction for patients to trail off to Cromer Hospital instead, which gives the place work, but wastes time and makes much inconvenience for patients. Will it change? Don’t bet on it …

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

Because of bad weather in January we started our February meeting with the Annual General Meeting.

After Club business founder member and President Betty Hastings stood down and was presented with a lovely bouquet from the Club and Ruth Brown received the Badge of Office as our new President. Betty presented cups to competition winners.

David Wright then demonstrated ‘A Crazy Thing Called Love’. Romance was in the air for the first heart shape design with red and cream tulips and orange roses. Engagement and wedding rings also featured as well as a Silver Wedding arrangement. David always cheers up the audience and so it was a happy start to the year.

We had a good number of entries for the competition ‘Hearts and Flowers’. Marion O’Hare was Best in Show.

Our next meeting is on Monday 18 March at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School when Dulcie Lofting will present ‘Renaissance’. Visitors are always welcome.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We recently had to have three cats put to sleep because they had FIP, a fatal disease which is caused by the feline corona virus. Infection with corona virus is very common in cats but generally does not cause any problems, other than mild self-limiting diarrhoea. It is only when the virus changes (which does not happen often) that it mutates and causes FIP. The corona virus itself is common, and experts believe that between 25 to 40 per cent of household pets are infected. The virus is shed in faeces and cats become infected when grooming or eating. Although a cat may be infected with the virus it does not mean it will mutate and that the cat will develop FIP; in fact the number that do is very small. The reason why this happens is not clear and there are several factors which could be involved

This is the first time we have had any experience of FIP and it was heartbreaking to lose them. Two were young cats, littermates, which had joined us from a feral colony. One other kitten from the litter is still in our care and will stay with us until we have the all clear to re-home him. Although there is no blood test which can indicate whether or not a cat has FIP we can check for the corona virus. Another kitten from the same litter found a home before these three came into care and his owner was informed. She decided to have him blood tested to see if he had the virus and his blood tests came back negative. The other cat in care which had FIP was much older and came to us from a multi cat household. Fortunately the other cats which came in with him are both fit and well.

On a happier note we were delighted to

be nominated as one of the “Community Matters Charities” for February at our new Waitrose Store and have now been advised that, thanks to their customers putting their tokens in our box, we will be receiving a donation of £318. If you put your tokens in our box, we thank you.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

999 Day

If you would like a craft stand please contact Tina on 07787297279. And if you would like a stand for your business and all other enquiries then please contact Amanda on 07799307299.

This is going to be a fantastic fundraising event so we can purchase a defibrillator for the site.

We have many children, teachers and visitors to our school so we realise how important it is to be prepared for any eventuality.

Spring is fast approaching, the daffodils will soon be flowering, the grass will need cutting and the WORM EGGS will be hatching! Yes, the WORM EGGS! The large amount of dog mess seen on the streets of our towns over the winter months will start becoming a real health issue as the weather warms up. One dog can pass as many as 15,000 eggs per gram of faeces, that’s a lot of eggs going by the amount of faeces on the streets. The council will issue on the spot fines of £80 to anyone caught leaving dog mess in a ‘scoop the poop’ designated area, with court action if the fine is unpaid. Heavy worm burdens may cause anaemia, diarrhoea, vomiting and malnutrition. There is also significant risk to human health when dealing with Toxocara Canis (dog Round Worm) as this worm may be transferred to humans by poor hygiene after contact with your pet, especially if your dog likes to lick your face and hands. Worm eggs in the environment may survive for many years, when in the larval form they are infectious to animals and humans. The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) recommends a MINIMUM worming frequency of at least every 3 months for dogs and cats or monthly treatments in higher risk situations (i.e. if your pet scavenges/hunts or is in close contact with children). Regular worming of your pet is a fundamental part of responsible pet ownership as well as picking up after your dog in public places. With our March promotion at Miramar Vets, we are trying to encourage the dog and cat owners of North Norfolk to worm their pets by offering 15% off worming tablets throughout the month. Pets need to be registered with the surgery and an accurate body weight must be recorded on their record card. New clients will need an appointment with the nurse before treatment can be dispensed. You will receive a reminder through the post when your next treatment is due. We also have some poo bags and dispensers to give away to encourage owners to pick up after their pets for a cleaner, healthier town. There is limited stock so hurry along to the practice for your freebie.

ANNUAL TOWN MEETING - Cromer Parish Hall, Friday 26 April, 7pm to 9.30pm (doors open at 6.30pm). “An opportunity to learn about many aspects of your community” AGENDA - 7.00pm Welcome by the Mayor of Cromer. Guest Speaker Philip Haslam (Chief Executive, Eastern Inshore Fisheries & Conservation Authority). Questions to Councillors. Presentation of Grants. Cromer Honours Awards

COMMUNITY OPEN DAY - Cromer Parish Hall, Saturday 27 April 2013, 10am to 4pm. Any community organisation wishing to have a table at the event is asked to contact the Town Council office to reserve their place. Spaces are limited and will be issued on a first come, first served basis.

CEREMONIES AT NORTH LODGE - We are liaising with the Registrars to arrange ‘Duo’ ceremonies. This provides the opportunity (weather permitting) to hold part of the ceremony outside in the walled garden overlooking the sea. The legal part of the ceremony must still take place in the Chamber inside North Lodge which is licensed for ceremonies. There is also now very limited availability for ceremonies to be held at 7pm. Please also see our Facebook page Weddings in Cromer for more photographs of our venue. Further details are available from the Town Council office. CHRISTMAS EVENTS 2013 - We know it is early to be thinking about Christmas but plans are already underway for the 2013 Christmas Market. Anyone interested in having a stall is asked to contact the Town Clerk for further information.

Might you have a hidden talent? Perhaps deep inside you there is an undiscovered skill for playing a brass band instrument, just waiting to burst forth. Well now is your opportunity to find out!

On Saturday 6th April The Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band have an open day at St Peters Church Hall, Sheringham. From 10am to 4pm members of the band will be there to answer any questions you may have about playing in a brass band. Further more, when you pop in you can, if you wish, have ‘a blow’ of one or more of the instruments, from the cornet, the smallest instrument in the band, up to the one of the big basses. Why not tap or rattle something in the kitchen section percussion to you and me, drums, cymbals and things like that. You can even have a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit.

FreeAds

However, on the other hand, you might be a one time player who remembers those past days when playing along with fellow musicians was fun, and have been wishing you could enjoy those days over again. Well, wish no more, come and enjoy again the pleasure of holding a cornet, or wonder how you ever lifted a B flat bass. We will look forward to seeing you.

But it does not end there, The Cromer And Sheringham Brass Band will be appearing from 7.30 pm in St Peters Church that evening, to play a selection of popular pieces. There is no entry charge, we just ask that, if you have enjoyed yourselves, you make a contribution to the retirement collection.

The band looks forward to seeing you.

Cromer’s East Side Traders Join Forces Again. Its the Easter Egg Hunt. Free fun for the family during the Easter Holidays. Working together to encourage customers to visit their shops and services. After their successful Christmas promotion they are looking forward to Easter by joining The Indie Easter Egg Hunt, National campaign promoted by oted Clare Rayner, The Retail Champion Founder of the Support for Independent Retail Campaign 15 shops and business in Church Street, Mount Street and Bond Street are on the hunt. The hunt starts on Saturday 23rd March and runs throughout the Easter Holidays. Hunt maps can be collected from The Copy Shop, Church Street, Cromer. More Information call Hunt Co-ordinator Tracey Khalil 01263 511919 Join our Indie Easter Egg hunt and explore some of the local shops that you might never have seen before. The Indie Easter Egg hunt is a fun, free family activity to enjoy during the school holiday! All you need to do is visit a selection of the shops listed within, collect your eggs (little stickers) on your map, and when you’ve collected enough eggs you can redeem your map for a real chocolate egg and a lovely certificate of completion! Come and visit our shops, have some fun collecting your stickers and finding your egg.

MORE MUSIC MAESTRO PLEASE!

Supporting your local traders has a really positive impact on your local economy. The retail champion campaign data below: For every £1 you spend with a local, independent business, between 50p-70p circulates back into your local economy. Shopping locally supports local traders, their suppliers and the people they depend on to run their businesses. Buying locally boosts your local economy, rebuilding confidence in the community, enabling local businesses to prosper and grow. Shopping online or out-of-town may save you a little time but for every £1 you spend, only 5p trickles back into your local economy. When you shop with your local independents you are doing ‘your bit’ to keep your high street, town or village centre ‘open for business’.. Sadly it really is a case of ‘use it or lose it’. So, Thank You for choosing to spend with us this Easter, we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Although we are surrounded by the most amazing music on our radios, TVs, iPods and tablets, there are still lots of people who like to hear quality LIVE music, which is probably why the Briston Organ Shows always prove so popular! The next show is on Friday 22 March at the Copeman Centre, Briston, and will feature the very popular Jon Smith. John plays organ, keyboards, piano, melodica, and sings as well (but not all at the same time!) and always attracts large crowds to his performances, probably because he plays everything from pops to classics and everything in between too - and he also has a great sense of humour as well!

As with all the Briston Shows, proceeds from the Raffle and Refreshments will benefit the Hall's ongoing improvements. The show starts at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm). Tickets are £6 each (juniors half price) and you can book yours by calling Carol on 01263 860844. We advise advance booking, as tickets sell out quite quickly.

Overstrand Evening WI

With the cold and icy weather in January our meeting was cancelled and the planned guided walk postponed a week. Although it was raining on the morning we set off across the cliff tops on the walk, this soon cleared and following refreshments in Cromer, the group enjoyed a leisurely stroll back along the beach in the sunshine.

Dog trainer Barbara Swarbrick from Animal Magic was the speaker at our February meeting. After explaining Animal Magic’s training ethos Barbara answered questions from members and provided a practical training demonstration with assistance from a member’s pet dog.

On 20 March Jacqui Palmer will talk about Henry Blogg and The History of Cromer Lifeboats and on 5 April starting at 10.30am from the Foundry Arms in Northrepps, there will be a guided circular round the village, taking in points of interest. Our monthly meetings commence at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Hall in The Londs. Visitors are always most welcome.

Cromer Giftware Est:1992 You can find us on the corner of Garden Street and Church Street. We sell all kinds of gift ware, cards and a good range of Norfolk Lavender. And of course me, I’m one of the ’Leonardo Collection’. 01263 515532 Cromer Times 417 March 16th 2013

Waitrose Supplies the Goods to North Norfolk Centre

Merchants’ Place was awarded a cheque for £510 from Waitrose, as a result of the votes cast by its customers during December.

Merchant’s Place Centre Manager, Geoff Leversedge, said “I was delighted that we had been chosen as one of the first three charitable organisations to benefit from this programme. This will be a great help, in a difficult economic climate, it will help ensure that key free services and training will continue to be provided to the people of north Norfolk. A big thank you from all of us at the centre to Waitrose and their customers who voted for us.” The cheque was presented by Kevin Woolstenholmes, from Waitrose.

Suffield Park Bowls Club

The opening of the season is only a few weeks away and the Spring Meeting is on Thursday 28 March at 7pm in the clubhouse.

For club members this is your chance to renew your membership and complete your competition forms. In spite of rising costs, the membership fees have been contained at last year’s levels, although there will be a slight increase in competition entry fees. Green fees/match levies will now be payable for both home and away games.

The 2013 season will see some exciting changes with different tournaments, new friendlies, some lively fundraising functions and a new Wednesday morning internal league, interspersed with an entirely new concept for the Club – Bowls Whist!

If you want to know what that is all about, be sure you don’t miss the Spring Meeting. Agendas and minutes are awaiting collection at the Club for those who have not already claimed them.
