Cromer Times 436 December 14th 2013

Cromer Lights Up!

On Saturday 7th December Cromer’s Christmas Lights were switched on by Dr Who star John Hurt in front of thousands of cheering people. Before the big switch on at 5.30pm visitors to the town enjoyed entertainment throughout the day including a Christmas Tree Festival and Charity Stalls in Cromer Church, a Nativity Festival in the Methodist Church and stalls, dancing, music and fayres in other locations across the town. From 4.30pm proceedings were conducted by Tony Shipp, Chair of Cromer Voluntary Entertainments Organisation in the centre of the town. Crowds were treated to an appearance by Olly Day and the cast of The Cromer Christmas Show who have been unable to perform the Show since Thursday night’s storm damaged the Pavillion Theatre on the Pier. Plenty of crowds joined in as the Rev Canon David Court then led people in singing a host of traditional carols, accompanied by the ever popular Salvation Army Band.

After the carols it was over to John Hurt to press the button and bathe the town in colourful light with the help of local schoolboy Ollie Robinson. Mr Hurt said “I’m delighted to say that Cromer provides a big red button! I shall enjoy squashing that”. As the lights went on the crowd cheered and

community groups working together to plan the events.

Paul Stowe, Chair of the Christmas Lights Committee said “this is the first year the lights have been switched on

without Vera Woodcock and we have put up two new lights at the entrance of the parish hall in Vera’s memory – an angel and a bell. An angel because Vera was one and a bell because Jingle Bells was Vera’s favourite Christmas song.” Vera, who was president of the Christmas Lights Committee died earlier this year at the age of 86, having been involved in the illuminations for over 38 years.

Mr Stowe went on to say “today is the culmination of eight weeks of hard work by a dozen volunteers on the lighting committee who this year have put up eight new set pieces throughout the town”. Tony Nash, Chair of the Christmas Event committee said “this year we decided to move all the Christmas stalls and activities indoors. It has been very successful with plenty of people visiting throughout the day”. Cromer, which has received severe damage along its seafront in recent days, caused by the storm, saw thousands of people visiting the town. Tracey Khalil, Chair of Cromer Chamber of Trade said “the day has been marvellous, there have been lots of people about and, as always, Cromer has pulled together as a community despite the exceptional tidal surges of the last few days”. The lights will be on until January 5th.

CROMER CHRISTMAS SHOW 2013

If you have been put off by the adverse, somewhat unjustified, comments about the Summer Seaside Special, don't be because the Christmas show is BRILLIANT!

The dancers yet again this year are fantastic, and it is better that there are four girl dancers again for this show. The show would not be same without them.

It is a truly wonderful Christmas extravaganza with the traditional Christmas carols and vibrant and lively show numbers.

I would suggest that you quickly go and buy tickets as there is something for all ages and you will be thoroughly entertained by everybody involved with this sparkling show.

Cromer's own Eddie Bushell and Jane Watkins, the solo singers capture all the moods of the show from the atmospheric Silent Night to the fast moving show numbers.

The show has been devised, directed and choreographed by Di Cooke and Nigel Hogg is the Musical Director.

The colourful and stylish costumes were designed and produced by Laura Whyte and Beryl Patterson. The set design by Ian Westbrook adds greatly to this show. The skillful lighting design by Amanda Hill really compliments all the scenes.

Norfolk funny man, Olly Day, in his own unique style is great at leading the show, along with comedy illusionist, Martyn James doing some amazing magic, especially with Martini bottles.

Cromer Pier Damaged Christmas Show temporarily suspended

The record surge tides that hit Britain and in particular the coast of Norfolk & Suffolk severely damaged Cromer Pier. With one of the best ever Christmas Shows only just opened less than a week before, the damage to the pier and the Pavilion Theatre has forced the show’s cancellation at least for a few days. Meet Father Christmas and his reindeer at Bacton Wood and Holt Country Park

Continued from front cover... As well as the chance to meet Father Christmas, children and their accompanying adults will have an opportunity to follow a Christmas trail through the woods to learn about animals and their winter hibernation habits, collect items to make a wildlife treat, and make a Christmas spectacle!

At the end of the trail reindeer from Melsop Park Farm will be waiting for their Christmas snack, and of course there’ll be presents for all the children.

Father Christmas and his reindeer will visit Bacton Wood on Saturday 14 December, and Holt Country Park on Sunday 15 December, 10.30am – 12.45pm on each day (last entry to the trail 12.15pm). £3 per child, adults free (all children to be accompanied by an adult, please), no booking required – and everyone is advised to wear appropriate footwear and to wrap up warm! Dogs on leads welcome. Hot drinks will be available and note there is a small parking charge at Holt Country Park.

Further details are available from North Norfolk District Council Event Ranger on 07920 576634 or visit www.northnorfolk.org/community.

Council gallery hosts new exhibition

North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is currently presenting a debut exhibition entitled ‘Mixed Media Exhibition’ featuring a collection of observational and creative works by young local artist Charlotte Rowlands. The exhibition runs until 27 January 2014.

Self-taught 24 year old North Norfolk Artist Charlotte Rowlands, from Roughton, near Cromer, has achieved an inspiring portfolio of mixed media from original portraits and wildlife to stained glass 3D work. She has been encouraged and creatively nurtured by her artist mother Karen Rowlands, who formally exhibited at NNDC last year.

Charlotte said “I love the challenge in drawing portraits of observing and capturing the subtle details that make each individual person unique. The simplicity of colour and rawness of pencil I feel brings an honesty to the portraits. When drawing animals I like to use pastel and charcoal to achieve the quality of light, fluffiness in the fur. Making stained glass presents a very different challenge to drawing. An image needs to be captured in a few simple lines, then developed by the choice of colours and textures of glass.”

Council calls for guarantee on ‘crucial’ Coasthopper service

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has called for Norfolk County Council to guarantee that there will be no reduction in the Coasthopper bus service that links isolated towns across the district throughout the year.

In a motion approved at a meeting of NNDC Full Council last month councillors agreed to urge the County Council not to cut the service, and that if there were any proposals for changes to the service there should be full and meaningful consultations with residents and stakeholders in North Norfolk before any changes could be implemented.

The Coasthopper bus service, currently run by Norfolk Green, carried 545,523 passengers in 2012, with an estimated increase to over 570,000 this year. Norfolk Green has said that any cuts in County Council funding over the next two years would force them to reduce the level of service, most especially in the winter.

Tom FitzPatrick, NNDC Leader, said “The Coasthopper bus service plays a crucial role in the district, providing essential links between our coastal and neighbouring inland communities.

“It is a vital component of the North Norfolk economy, making it possible for people to travel outside their towns and villages throughout the year. We are very concerned by the County Council’s proposals to drastically reduce the funding of this core service. Any cuts will potentially lead to further rural isolation for many people across the district and threaten to make life more difficult for our tourism and business communities.”

The full wording of the motion as passed is: “North Norfolk District Council calls for Norfolk County Council to guarantee that there will be no reduction in the service and to consult fully with the residents and stakeholders in North Norfolk on the details of any potential changes when these are known.”

The exhibition will provide original and great value seasonal gifts ranging from £8 to £180, with the additional offer of commissions for drawings and stained glass.

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually; open for view to the public during normal office hours, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am – 5pm; Wednesday 10am – 5pm; Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Community First Responders

Hello, my name is Ronnie the Responder. I am writing this article in order to clarify the question that I and my colleagues have recently been asked, which is:

Is the community Public Access Defibrillator (cPAD) scheme and Community First Responder (CFR) scheme the same?

The cPAD scheme is an independent scheme that allows communities to fund raise in order to establish an Automated External Defibrillator in a high visibility cabinet that is attached to the external wall of a building, although they can also be placed within public buildings such as sporting venues, shopping complexes and doctor surgeries, in fact in any location where people are likely to congregate and is for use by the public.

The defibrillator is accessed by a code given by the ambulance service dispatcher when you dial 999, (In all cases dial 999 first as it is really important that the professionals are on their way). Your local ambulance service will notify you if there is a cPAD box near to you and if it is easily accessible, and give you the access code to the box. If you are willing they will ask you to get this and commence the relevant actions. No training is required to use the defibrillator as, once activated, it will give verbal instructions. However, awareness or training sessions in basic CPR and use of AEDs are useful and can help with confidence in using a defibrillator.

A Community First Responder is a volunteer who is trained by the ambulance service to attend emergency calls in the area where they live or work. Our aim is to reach a potential life threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives on scene. We are sent by ambulance control to life-threatening emergencies such as cardiac arrest, heart attack chest pains, severe asthma attack, diabetic Hypoglycaemic attack, epilepsy and anaphylactic shock.

Lighthouse, 62 Cromer Road, Sheringham

will always be mobilised to every call that the First Responder attends. Once the Ambulance arrives on scene, the Community First Responder will hand over to the crew and may be asked to assist. After the case is complete and the patient is on their way to the hospital, the Responder is required to telephone Ambulance control to notify them that they are clear of the incident.

First Responders utilise their own vehicle, pay their own insurance, road fund licence, MOT and fuel. They also provide their own protective clothing. We carry our own AED and Oxygen along with a variety of therapy masks, airways, bandages and dressings. The only medication that we carry and are authorised to administer is Dextragel for use when someone has very low blood/sugar levels.

i hope that you have found this information useful and should you have any further questions the please let me know by email, c/o jbegley007@yahoo.co.uk or phone me on 01263 576539.

We live or work in area where a group is set up and can get to an incident in just a few minutes while an ambulance resource is on its way. Our role is to help stabilise the patient and, in doing so, keep the patient alive until the arrival of the more highly skilled ambulance crew, who are trained to undertake further life saving techniques. Norfolk MPs and Lib Dem councillors condemn council proposal to cut funding for student transport in Norfolk

Norfolk Members of Parliament have expressed their concern at the proposed changes to post 16 school transport. In a letter to the Leader of Norfolk County Council, George Nobbs, all nine Norfolk MPs urged the Leader of NCC to look at other ways to achieve savings rather than increasing the cost of transport passes. Norfolk County Council is currently conducting a consultation into the proposed changes. The consultation closed on 12 December 2013.

What’s next?

six years ago norfolk Cleaning was founded by Peter and Diane Murther, offering a domestic cleaning service to the local community.

This soon changed and what developed was, The Norfolk Cleaning Group. This is made up of; Norfolk Cleaning, Norfolk Laundry Services, Norfolk Holiday Home Management and now The Norfolk Cleaning Centre.

Peter and Diane started Norfolk Cleaning when they were unable to find a professional cleaning company to look after their own office and home in North Walsham. Peter has been in management for almost all of his working life, with many years running his own company. The Group has grown phenomenally year upon year. What started as a small operation has turned into something on a much larger scale with a wide range of services being offered throughout Norfolk, including; Complete Holiday Home Management Package, Washing and Ironing, Dry Cleaning, End Of Tenancy Cleaning, Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning and the job everyone hates… Oven Cleaning.

Norfolk Cleaning first started in a small unit on Douglas Bader Close, North Walsham but shortly after was forced to move to much larger premises at 2A Stanford Tuck Road. With the significant expansion of the laundry, 2A just wasn’t big enough and they have now taken over the

Fred's Return from Everest Base Camp

air lifted out to Katmandu Hospital.

We were extremely lucky with the weather,

He flew from the UK to Katmandu then on to the notoriously short air strip at Lukla, high in the Himalayas of Nepal. From there he trekked through the pine forests and over long suspension bridges spanning deep gorges, gradually climbing higher into the more bleak mountainous regions.

There were 20 people in our party said Mr Corbett, plus guides, a doctor, sherpas and 5 yaks, and we stayed in tea houses in small remote villages and Buddhist temples. Of the 20 people in our party 18 made it through to Everest Base Camp. One person who became seriously ill due to altitude sickness had to be

not been able to make Base Camp because of over 4ft of snow. The steep uneven stone paths combined with headaches, nausea, tiredness and lack of sleep which is common at high altitudes, made for tough going, but a thoroughly rewarding trip through stunning scenery and friendly welcoming local people.

Having funded the whole trip myself we initially hoped to raise £1000 but at present we have raised over £2500 for The Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund at Epilepsy Research UK.

Cromer’s New Year’s Day Firework Display

all eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier at 5pm on 1 January 2014 for the traditional new year’s Day Firework display, and organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day – but urge them not to leave it until the last minute to come to Cromer.

This year’s display has been specially designed to conclude with red fireworks, representing the poppies, floating on the sea to mark the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the First World War in 1914.

“We’re delighted it’s become such a successful annual event, and with plenty of good vantage points to watch the display, come early, we don’t want anyone to miss it,” says Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond.

“The idea has always been to bring people up to the coast for a breath of fresh air, something to eat and drink, and a fabulous firework display over the sea fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm. "This year, 1 January is a Wednesday, so linger longer and enjoy the evening. Cafés, pubs and restaurants will also be open, so there'll be plenty of places to get a cuppa or something stronger." There will also be teas and coffees in the Church with mulled wine outside Cromer Museum. Raising over £3,000 for local good causes – and funding the following year’s display – the annual display attracts up to 8,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day. "This year’s show will be as spectacular as in previous years. Premiere fireworks have been planning and building the show over the last few months and are hoping more than ever to produce effects that will light up the sea in a v ariety of colours, but this, as always, is all weather dependent.”

3pm Fun run Work off those New Year’s Eve excesses with a gentle jog along Cromer Prom – or a five minute dash if you’re up to it! North Norfolk Beach Runners are organising their annual One Mile Fun Run as a curtain-raiser for the firework display at 5pm.

Starting from the pier forecourt at 3pm, the run is open to all ages and abilities, with categories for under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors, and even Fancy Dress. Registration will take place from 2.30pm on the pier forecourt for a fee of £1.

sPenD tHe Day in CroMer Prior to the fireworks there will be illuminated light-sabres and lanterns available to buy during the afternoon out side Cromer Museum

Merry Christmas from

(next to the Church). Mulled wine will again be served outside the museum, with tea, coffee, and hot soup available in the church.

Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will also be open and other vendors are planning to ensure the crowds who descend on Cromer won’t go hungry. Please see the Town Council website (www.cromertown.org) and facebook page (‘New Year's Day Fireworks, Cromer’) for a list of some of the traders who will be participating. “PLease GiVe GenerousLy” Donations from spectators last year raised over £8,500, which is divided between funding the following year’s display and local charities.

“Everyone’s aware that budgets are still tight, but we do ask people give as generously as they can,” says Jim Bond. “Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display.”

Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early as possible on New Year’s Day. All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £2 per car for all day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal car park fees will apply on all other car parks.

Please note Cromer Pier will be closed from 8am on New Year’s Day until after the display (7pm approx) although Tides Restaurant will be open from 10am – 4pm.

All the colour of Snow White

The cast of this year’s pantomime have arrived at Sheringham Little Theatre in a blaze of colour.

As costumes are fitted and rehearsals for Snow White begin, familiar faces are being welcomed back and new performers being introduced to the coastal venue.

Muddles and Russel Hicken as Nanny Knotty Knickers.

Russel said “This is my fourth year playing the pantomime dame at Sheringham so it feels like coming home for Christmas!

This year’s festive production begins on Friday, December 13 and runs until Saturday, January 4.

back in Sheringham for the second time,” she admitted. “I am looking forward to getting stuck into the role of Snow White and really making it my own.”

Wicked stepmother Loraine has not appeared in panto at Sheringham before but is a regular in the Summer Rep. “I can’t wait to get started. I have played the evil character in other pantomimes and I just love it. All that booing and hissing is just wonderful!” she said.

Written by West End star Killian Donnelly, who is currently starring in The Commitments, and has appeared in blockbuster film Les Miserables alongside Russell Crowe, it looks set to be a lively production.

Pantomime director Simon Thompson said Killian’s version of Jack and the Beanstalk was so successful last year that the theatre was keen to work with him again.

“Killian really understands pantomime – the tradition, the use of dialogue and what people are looking for in terms of pace,” he said. “His writing appeals to young people because it is contemporary but at the same time it has the right balance for adults too.”

The production stars Rachel Waring, as Snow White, Loraine Metcalf, as the Wicked Queen, Kyle Fraser as Prince Charming, Rik Warren as

Simon said Snow White promised as much singing, dancing and great family fun as last year’s Christmas show.

“It looks like the show is going to be a lot of fun. It is a great script, which had me laughing out loud from the very first moment I read it.” Rachel is also returning the venue for the festive season. Last year she played Jill in Jack and the Beanstalk.

“I started out in panto as a child so it is lovely to be playing the Princess and it is nice to be

POPS FRUIT & VEG

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

for all your fresh fruit & veg is situated at

The Old Post Office, Chapel Road, Roughton telephone 01263 768688

With Christmas fast approaching it is time to reflect on the past year and to mention some of the cats that we have looked after.

With nearly 300 cats being cared for by the branch this year and over 210 having been found new homes, our fosterers have been kept very busy. Two cats which came into care as strays were reunited with their owners because they had been chipped, five cats were returned to their owners and sadly we lost six cats because they had serious health problems. Much to our delight several of our long term residents have been re-homed as have all of the older cats, apart from one. Max, the oldest cat still in care is, however, not available for re-homing as he is a “golden oldie” cared for by Pauline, one of our fosterers, and at nearly 19 years old is very happy to retain his position as a Cats’ Protection cat but also continues to enjoy his freedom and home comforts. With so many cats, our vet bills have been considerable as all cats have a “vet check”, are vaccinated, micro chipped and in some instances blood

tested for FIV/FELV. With several cats also needing operations, X rays, etc, our fosterers are familiar faces at the vets. For example, Caramel, a dear little kitten, who required cage rest after damaging one of her legs, and Mickey and Jim two of the older cats who needed dentals. Fortunately, fundraising has gone quite well despite raising less money at two of our major events. As well as car boot sales, street collections, bingo and table top sales we have also been selling some of our goods on line and these sales are proving very successful. Our final fund raising events for this year, a table top sale and a Quiz night, will have taken place by the time you read this. We would like to thank everyone who has been involved during the year, helping cats in their own special way.

We are delighted to have opened the doors to our brand new practice on 4th December at 8.30 am. Come along and have a look at our new facilities. We have 5 individual consulting rooms, separate cat and dog waiting areas our shop ‘Miramar Pets’ is incorporated in the spacious waiting area. Our custom built Reception Desk enables our reception staff to help with your enquiries in an efficient, professional manner. The Consulting Rooms are equipped with their own computers which link with each other and our Cromer Surgery so no matter where you are seen your pet’s records will always be available to the Vet. Our new ‘Prep’ (preparation) room has more space with a nurses station centrally located to enable constant monitoring of our separate cat and dog wards, as well as the isolation unit. The Theatre has its own piped gas supply and is equipped to a very high standard. There is plenty of Office Space for our administrative team and a comfy staff room for us to relax in at coffee time. In the Shop we are stocking well-known brands such as James Wellbeloved, Arden Grange and Royal Canin. As well we have a good selection of toys, leads, collars and other pet supplies and necessary accesories. If you can’t find what you want just ask and we will do our best to get it for you!

With Christmas now only a few days away we need to remember the cats in our care and make sure that everything is safe for them. Securing the Christmas Tree (in case your kitten decides to climb it), making sure the decorations are shatterproof and the cat does not eat anything it should not (eg tinsel, chocolate) will ensure that everyone has a very Happy Christmas and large emergency vet bills will be avoided. We wish all our cat loving friends a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Cromer Squash Club

BAKER IS DELIGHTED AS HE REGAINS OVER 35 CROWN

Veteran former club champion John Baker rolled back the years on Friday evening when he regained the Club’s prestigious Over 35 title which he previously won nine years ago in 2004.

The third game turned out to be crucial as the two players traded point for point with very few mistakes until Spruce made a couple of vital unforced errors. With the score at 7-7 he lost his serve when he “tinned” a routine back hand drop and then, more importantly, having regained the serve and serving at 7-8 he sportingly called a double hit against himself to return the serve to Baker who went on to take the game 9-7.

Baker, who announced himself as a teenager when he won the club’s handicap tournament in 1984 and went on to win four club championships in the late 1980s and early 1990s just had the edge over fellow veteran, Gary Spruce coming out on top 9-7, 7-9, 9-7, 10-8 in an entertaining and well contested final.

The Over 35 tournament was first contested in 1985 and is held in memory of former club member Jeff Morris who died at the club earlier that year and it was fitting that Jeff’s daughter Debbie, was among the large and appreciative crowd who watched the match from the balcony.

Baker, who Technical Director Barry Starling says “Still hits the ball cleaner than any other player in the club”, started the match as though he was going to storm to victory as he opened up a 7-0 lead in the opening game and had “game ball” at 8-3 before Spruce rallied to within one point only for Baker to take the

The match looked to be heading for a decisive fifth game when Spruce opened up a 6-1 lead in the fourth and then twice went on to serve for the game at 8-6 before Baker regained the serve and, at the second attempt, closed out the game 9-8 to win the match 3-1 and regain his title.

game 9-7. The second game was almost a mirror image of the first as Spruce opened up a 6-2 lead as Baker served no fewer than ten times before being able to win his third point. He clawed his way back to 5-6 but Spruce always just had the edge and he drew level as he took the game 9-7.

After receiving his trophy Baker, who had to settle for the runners-up trophy in 2008, said: “To win this title again means a lot to me since some thirty years ago it was Jeff Morris who actively encouraged me to join the Fire Service and I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for him. The final was hugely enjoyable to play in and Gary proved himself not only a terrific opponent but also a terrific sportsman when he held his hand up at such a crucial time in the third game.”

OVERSTRAND GARDENING CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY

Overstrand Gardening Club held their Christmas party in the Parish Hall, Overstrand on 2 December.

It was a bring and share lunch with an excellent array of both savoury and sweet foods provided by the members.

A cryptic clue quiz was organised by Mrs. L. Irving and a free raffle was provided by the club who also provided the wine and soft drinks.

Following lunch Christmas carols were sung to the accompaniment of Mr. M. Storer.

In closing the meeting, the Chairman Dr. J. Gaston reminded the 40-members and guests of the next meeting in February with guest speaker, Charlotte Philcox whose subject will be ‘Workers, Wellies and Wheelbarrows’.

He also thanked members of the Parish Council and members of the Committee for helping to decorate the hall and organise the event.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

Jenni Baker demonstrated ‘Home for Christmas’ at our recent meeting. Although her arrangements had tinsel and glitter, they could be displayed before Christmas to get us in the mood for the forthcoming festive time. Seasonal flowers and foliage and a surprise bunch of Spring tulips added interest to the designs.

Our competition table looked fabulous and was judged by Jenni with constructive comments. Best in show was Joan Matthews.

Intrepid campers raise money for Cromer RNLI

Sue and Mick Crick, who hail from Holt near Norfolk, spent more than 12 weeks travelling around the coast of England in 2013, visiting more than 70 lifeboat stations along the way. The couple also took their Labrador, Nell, along for the ride which started in Cromer on 24 March and finished at the same station on 1 July. Sue and Mick said they were inspired to do the trip by their many happy memories of their visits to lifeboat stations in the past. They carried RNLI buckets and had official stickers in the van to let people know about their challenge and were delighted to find that money was donated by people they met on campsites as well as when they stopped. So far they have raised approximately £1200. They left Cromer RNLI station to travel along the coast road and by the time they had reached Aldeburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station in Suffolk, it was snowing. Sue laughingly said, ‘There was snow on the beach, it was very cold and at one time the temperature in the campervan was -7 degrees, but we were determined to continue.’ A special presentation was made to them on Sunday 1 December in recognition of the money raised through voluntary contributions given to them on their travels.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS - REVIEW OF CONCERT HELD AT TEMPLEWOOD, NORTHREPPS ON 17 NOVEMBER ALBANY PIANO TRIO - Pippa Harrison (Piano), Gemma Sharples (Violin) and Verity Evanson (Cello)

Cromer Music Evenings have again brought to Templewood an ensemble of young musicians of the highest calibre, forming the Albany Piano Trio. The Trio, after a busy summer coaching in the south of France, as musicians in residence at Abbeyfield House, Kew, and performing around the UK in festivals as part of Live Music were now are today in North Norfolk playing in the Music Room at Templewood.

Mozart’s Piano Trio in E major K542 opened the concert - immediately it was very obvious that here was an ensemble of sheer musicality, technical skill, total rapport between each player, which was maintained throughout the next two movements.

In complete contrast were two pieces by the composer Lili Boulanger, who died at the age of 24 years. The two works were written just before her death, namely A Sad Evening and Spring Morning, both being in impressionistic style and texture and very much influenced by Debussy’s writings with dissonant harmonies, majestic chord clusters deep in the bass register supported the most beautiful melodic lines shared by both violin and cello. The wonderful compositions surely ‘painted’ the meanings of these two works through the medium of music. Turina Joaquin’s Circulo Op 91 in three movements, but played through without breaks titled Dawn Sun Up, Day Unfolding and Fiesta all having a true Spanish flavour. Local Film for the New Year

Northrepps Film Society has a treat in store for Thursday 2 January when it will be showing a film set and made in Cromer. In Love with Alma Cogan, with Roger Lloyd-Pack (Vicar of Dibley, Only Fools and Horses) and Niamh Cusack, is a gentle comedy about the manager of the Pavilion Theatre who remains besotted with the 1950s singing star until events bring him happily into the present day. Doors at Northrepps Village Hall open at 7pm and tickets cost £4.50.

Beethoven’s Piano Trio in C minor Op 1 No 3 confirmed that these young artists were fully in control in a great variety of styles, rhythms, interpretations and whatever the composer demands. The performance of this work was superb in every movement and a testimony that portrays the wonderful work that is going on in producing young people with such consummate skills.

Their efforts today resulted in rapturous applause which was answered with an encore - Pennies from Heaven - which included a 16 bar improvisation (violin) in the style of the great Stefan Grappelli - wonderful indeed! Terry Keeler

Masked Winners Revealed

The Norfolk Pigeon Loft ran a fun festive competition, to decorate a masquerade mask. Katie from the NPL asked, Olly Day, Martyn James and Eddie Bushell, stars of the Cromer Christmas Show at the Pavilion Theatre, to judge the entries. They all expressed their amazement at the skill and enthusiasm from participants. As i walked into the Pavilion I was greeted by the very high spirits of the three gentlemen, who had just finished a performance of the Christmas show and were still in full costume looking very dapper. The atmosphere was festive and jolly as they poured over the superbly decorated masks. Some reflected the season and were very Christmassy, others were very glamorous and others looked as though they belonged in the Rio carnival!

The decision was eventually and difficultly made. To give the winners masks full credit the Gents decided to don them, and Eddie looked ready to sing on Broadway in third place winner’s Trinity Sayer, aged 11 from Cromer festive ‘Merry X-mas’ mask. Martyn conjured a woodland illusion as the ‘Green Man’ in second place winners mask Amy Lawson, aged 10 from West Runton , and Olly magically turned into a butterfly with the winning mask of Evie Richardson, aged 8 from North Walsham. The winners received goody bags ranging from £10 - £20 from the Norfolk Pigeon Loft, the place for that perfect fashion accessory! All masks can be seen displayed in the NPL’s Christmas window, and Olly, Martyn, and Eddies talents can be seen at Cromer pavilion theatre all throughout December. 8 Wyndham Street,

Dear Margaret,

Sheringham

I am saddened and angry to hear that a popular and busy little store in Cromer High Street is to close in favour of a national chain store. What makes it even worse is that the national clothing store already has premises in Cromer and is merely seeking to expand, so we are, in fact, losing a shop in the high street. We cannot afford to do this. Moreover, I have just read recently in the national press that property in small towns with access to small shops actually commands higher prices.

But my real annoyance is that this shop was friendly, useful and cheerful and to see it go is a real loss to Cromer, its visitors and the employees. Yours sincerely, Maureen Edwards

Our November meeting is also our Annual Meeting so before the serious stage we were entertained by our own Drama Group ‘The Shoestring Players’. We enjoyed a review of poems, readings and even Christmas cracker jokes. There was a reading of an AA Milne poem about King John, Glenice Knight gave a great rendition of ‘Old Sams Christmas Pudding’, Penny Jeffries told a lovely Nativity Tale and Judy Roberts caused a laugh dressed as the unwanted fairy replaced by a flashing rocket. Thanks went to Trish Loth and Cheryl Tait for this production of ‘40 Days to Christmas’. After tea we had our normal meeting combined with the Annual Meeting. Our President Miriam Ireland had to step down and an election took place and Glenice Knight was voted on as our new President. Thanks were given to Miriam for all her hard work over the last three years. Departing members of the committee were presented with floral thank you’s. Pat Fisher, whose son in law, completed a trip to the base camp at Everest, brought in some photographs of the event. Many members had sponsored him. Hazel Patrickson won the competition for a key ring and for accumulating the most points in the competition over the year a trophy went to Jill Betz. Arrangements were discussed for a visit to Ely Cathedral for a Christmas Craft Fayre and a group Carol Service in Sheringham.

the headline refers to the relatively new shop that opened in West street back in august. three months on and owner brenda taylor can happily say that all is going well.

Cute & Cuddly is specialising in recycling good quality clothes, toys and accessories especially for babies and young children. Brenda was inspired by her daughter. "My daughter had her third girl, but was struggling to buy clothes for her. There's no second hand shop in Cromer, which would be really useful for young mothers to exchange, buy or sell clothes and toys that are no longer needed but perfectly good quality," commented Brenda.

"I wanted to get back to work after looking after my partner Steve during his illness, and this seemed like a really good idea."

The shop is crammed with useful items from buggies to cot bumpers. The cot bumpers are made by Brenda's sister Monica, who also does any repairs that are needed, being a dab hand with a sewing or knitting needle.

"We will try to help everyone, to get good quality at an affordable price, so necessary in these tough economic times." So true, there's a telephone number on the door, and even if you call when closed Brenda will try to help out as she did recently. "I also use local suppliers where I can for almost everything from flyers to new stock."

In December, Cute & Cuddly will open seven days a week in the run-up to Christmas, before taking a break until January 2nd, and then reverting to 'Winter hours' of 10am-5pm, (closed on Wednesdays and Sundays).

Need good quality items for your kiddies at fair price? Then pop in and tell Brenda what you need, even if not in stock she will try to find it for you.

OPEN every day until Christmas 28
