A Dazzler of a Display

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

Crowds of locals and visitors enjoyed a dazzling and spectacular start to 2014 at Cromer’s New Year’s Day Fireworks. The breathtaking display saw over 500 fireworks launched off Cromer Pier and out to sea in the country’s biggest New Year’s Day firework show.

The event attracted thousands of people on a wet and windy day which saw a clear and dry spell for the dazzling evening display. Spectators lined the cliff tops and promenade to watch the 15 minute extravaganza explode in the skies and on the surface of the sea. Clive Casburn from Premiere Fireworks said “the display has become for us, one of the most interesting of our annual displays. The pier has proved a marvellous setting, by rigging the whole length of the pier the show can be seen all along the shoreline. Also, by suspending material from the pier, it adds another dimension to the display. The use of aquatic fireworks, surprises the audience every year. The reflections of the fireworks in the sea create a really unbelievable atmosphere”.

A Dazzler of a Display

“We take great pride in firing this show, which helps in bringing a real celebration to the town and North Norfolk, to welcome in the New Year.”

This year’s display was specially designed to conclude with red fireworks, representing poppies, floating on the sea to mark the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the First World War in 1914. One visitor said “It is a lovely start to 2014, and the raft of red lanterns at the end was just beautiful.” The afternoon’s activities began with a fun run organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners, which saw 18 brave people line up to run a mile along Cromer’s recently storm battered promenade. The race was won by Catherine Longe from Holt in a time of 7mins 24secs.

Chairman of the Fireworks committee Jim Bond said "This year’s show was as spectacular as in previous years. Premiere fireworks have been planning and building the show over the last few months and produced effects that lit up the skies and sea in a variety of colours.” Local attractions and traders opened up their shops, eateries, museums and businesses on what is now one of the town’s busiest days of the year.

Coltishall Clinic is very pleased to announce the arrival of a new stateof-the-art q-switched ruby laser from polaris medical. It is a heavy machine weighting at 125 lbs and taller than most of us with its articulated laser arm. It is very expensive too but we believe in offering only the best. And when it comes to laser tattoo removal-shortcuts are simply not worth it!

The market has been flooded with cheap poorly tested laser devices in recent years. We have seen more injuries, inadequate treatments and even keloid scars after tattoo removals attempted by non-medical establishments recently.

There are also a number of non-laser tattoo removal options available today and a lot of these are dangerous. It does not make sense to inject strong alkaline solutions into tattoo ink. It might remove some ink but it would certainly remove normal tissues with risk of scarring.

Q switched ruby laser is renowned for its ability to remove green as well as dark inks. It is also used for removing unwanted skin pigment. With our q-switched Nd-Yag laser and the ruby laser, we now have a full range of advanced lasers to offer the very best in Laser tattoo removal.

For Laser Tattoo or pigment removal contact Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic on 0800 0430737 or http://www.coltishallclinic.co.uk Cromer Times 437 January 18th 2014

Overstrand Evening WI

Our November monthly meeting also incorporated the Annual Meeting where reports were read, Financial Statements presented and a new Committee and President appointed for the following year.

In December members enjoyed a social evening with a ‘Bring and Share’ supper followed by member Liz Crane demonstrating a simple Christmas table decoration, a short light hearted quiz, all rounded off with a dip into the bran tub.

We welcome visitors and prospective new members to our meetings; these are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

Cromer WI

We started our December meeting early with a Christmas buffet prepared by the Committee members. Plenty of turkey sandwiches, sausage rolls and mince pies. It was all rounded off by a visit from Father Christmas who issued out gifts to all. There was a lovely display of creative hanging Christmas trees that had been made with colourful Christmas material and milk bottle tops. These had been created at one of our craft sessions with Val Lodge.

We then had our meeting and the speaker for the month was Mrs. Shirley Rees with her talk entitled “Sewing Inspirations”. We were told how it all started with a patchwork course at Wroxham Barns and that led to embroidery, appliqué and all other forms of sewing. She loved using colour and this showed in her work. There was a display of quilts, wall hangings, bags, cushions and greeting cards.

We were told that our collection during the Christmas tree and Nativity festival raised £142 for the Cromer Skatepark fund. We had a draw for a bursary to help two members attend a course at Denman, Oxford. This is the WI’s own training centre. Frances Lee and Doreen Wood both won the drawer to qualify. Our competition of a Christmas tree decoration was won by Pat Fisher.

Keith Skipper’s Crackers at Probus Christmas lunch

The Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club chairman, Dave Vickery, welcomed fellow members and their guests at the Christmas Lunch held at the Links Hotel West Runton on 3 December. Everyone then tucked in to an excellent meal.

The loyal toast was proposed by Brian Bullock and then the chairman made a few remarks. Dave Vickery said that, at the half-way point in his year in office, he was thoroughly enjoying it, particularly as the standard of the speakers and the food had been high.

Dave thanked Barry Tomlinson and Gordon Hatchett for their work as treasurer and secretary respectively. He also thanked all the members for their efficiency in letting him know on the occasions when they are unable to attend the monthly lunch meetings.

usual witty and humorous manner with a mixture of truthful and fictional stories which included some real crackers. He concluded by thanking the members for their hospitality on behalf of himself, his wife Diane and all the other guests.

Our lunch coincided with the day of Keith’s monthly mardle with Matthew Gudgin on BBC Radio Norfolk, so just after 6 o’clock he was called upon to explain on air why he had turned up at the radio station in suit and tie. This gave him the opportunity to thank us again, rather more publicly, and he referred to the forthcoming visits by David

Clayton and Greg Powles to our lunches in the New Year.

Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday 4 February featuring a talk after lunch by Alistair Murphy, the curator of Cromer Museum, on the subject of the photographer Olive Edis.

The club is open to gentlemen who are retired or nearly so. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information.

Congratulations Are Due

New Year’s night in Cromer by the sea It was surely just the very top place to be And the incredible show above the pier Was the all time best, that is very clear.

This famous jewel of the north Norfolk coast 2014 New Year`s night they could really boast Fifteen minutes of a wondrous sheer delight An extravaganza of a Cromer New Year sight.

Congratulations to the organisers of this event For those displays despite the recent weather intent A show of sound and colour as we looked up high And thousands of eyes turned towards the night sky.

In Sydney and Dubai great fireworks you would expect But it is Cromer town we must now really respect Above our damaged and historic promenade and pier Our sadness and blues were made to disappear.

And then as the multitudes were homeward bound They were accompanied by a melodious sound The great parish church bells began to peel Making the evening`s entertainment almost unreal. Congratulations to all concerned

The Elephant Man....a heavy responsibility Having the responsibility for historically accurate costumes for a well known play is quite a responsibility, but Nona Gray, who lives in Cromer is taking the task in her stride. Nona has researched the Bernard Pomerance play The Elephant Man, which is set in the 1880’s, and provided the correct costumes for the period. The cast, all of whom are local, will enjoy wearing the clothes of the time, which, for the ladies, will mean bustles! The costumes will certainly enhance John Merrick’s amazing story. This well-known and deeply moving play tells the true story of John Merrick, whose severe deformity causes him to be abandoned in a workhouse at the age of three. As an adult he is paraded as a ‘freak’ 8

in a carnival until a doctor rescues him and provides him with a home at his hospital. Underneath his deformity Merrick is intelligent and sensitive. Introduced to high Victorian society he finds himself confused by hypocritical Victorian values and attitudes. This play raises uncomfortable questions about society’s morality, the nature of charity and the relative importance of spirituality versus science. The audience are left to find their own answers.

Vic Steyerman

The production is being put on by the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society at Sheringham Little Theatre in February. The Society will be raising money for the charity Changing Faces, which helps those with facial disfigurements. The Society, who achieved charitable status themselves last year and who celebrate their centenary in 2014, hopes to raise £500 for Changing Faces.

The Elephant Man will be on from Wednesday 12 to Saturday 15 February at Sheringham Little Theatre. Box Office: 01263 822347. Cromer Times 437 January 18th 2014

The Singing Beauty Treatment!

It’s a couple of weeks since those New Year resolutions …. Did more than the goose get a little bit fat? Did you, like me, make a New Year resolution to be healthier, be fitter? And are you still keeping it? Well, if going to the gym or striding round North Norfolk in the dark evenings for that after work, work out is not for you, how about singing?

Did you know that exercising those vocal chords is actually an aerobic exercise that benefits the heart and circulation, decreases muscle tension and, because it exercises our lungs, tones up the body? And… singing has been found to improve sleep, tone facial muscles and improve posture…. “What?” I hear you say, “Singing could make me more beautiful!”

Well, yes! And there’s more. The latest research shows singing in a choir causes a calming effect that is as beneficial to your health as yoga. It can help reduce anger, depression and anxiety and has been shown to improve balance issues caused by illness. Then there are the social and emotional benefits. Singing enhances mood, increases positive feelings and is without doubt spiritually uplifting. It certainly brings people together and encourages a sense of community and if you sing with Cantamus Community Choir, I can promise you it is most assuredly a forum for fun & laughter. And we all know laughter is the best medicine!

Still not convinced? Well perhaps the more “Zadok the Priest”. Some of our members don’t formal, scientific explanation will persuade read music and some haven’t sung since school, you. Charlie’s home cured Gravadlax.... with home-made Norfolk horseradish Since I’ve been in Cromer I’ve one of the many highlights has been becoming involved with the RNLI, training to be part of the crew. The do such a great job all year round and they are a great bunch of boys. It’s not until you get the RNLI bug completely under your skin that you realise the commitment, bravery and selflessness that they all have, and it’s been a privilege to spend time with them. The boss is, however, slightly concerned that the alarm will go at seven thirty on a Saturday night when my hands are full of steak, but I’ve assured him that Icarus’ steak always takes priority!

This recipe has been a firm favourite on our a la carte menu for a while now, and if you’ve ever wanted to know how to cure salmon – now’s your chance.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Grove this winter – we are open for dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, plus of course the best Sunday Lunch in Norfolk! Best wishes, Charlie

You will need to purchase half side of salmon, scaled and pin boned (any fishmonger will do this for you).

► Place the salmon on a piece of parchment big enough to be able to fold over the fish.

► In a food processor, blend 5-7 good size sprigs of dill

► Add crushed black peppercorns, a handful of pink peppercorns, half a squeezed lemon, a good squeeze of Norfolk honey (if possible from hives that have been located near rape seed, as the honey tastes scrummy, and just a bit more fragrant).

► Blend all the above ingredients until a fine paste, like a pesto-type consistency, and put aside.

► Sprinkle a good handful of Maldon Sea onto the fish with the dill paste and spoon spread across the top of the salmon until even, as you need to have a consistent flavour through the whole of the flesh.

► Fold over the parchment, and then wrap gently with cling film length and width-wise until fully sealed.

► Leave in fridge for 10 days… (no longer!)

► When cured take your salmon from the fridge, unwrap and slice very finely using a carving (or if you have a long fish) knife.

► For the simple Horseradish crème fraîche,

► Add to the horseradish one teaspoon of Dijon mustard, a pinch of salt and pepper and a touch of castor sugar.

► Mix all together with a good couple of large table spoons of crème fraîche and an equal amount of sour cream.

► Finally squeeze your other half of lemon (or probably a fresh lemon, given that the last half was used ten days before!) into the mix.

Simply serve your salmon with your fresh Horseradish sauce and toasted sourdough bread.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER MAKE YOUR GARDEN GROW of their new introductions at this time of year and here are some of the suggestions I have seen:

SUTTONS SEEDS

This seed company has introduced new flowers and vegetable seed including Tomato ‘Firecracker’, a compact, naturally trailing variety for pots, basket or patio which throughout the season promises 60-80 fruits, each weighing around 30-35 g. They are also promoting a new plant Didiscus ‘Madonna’ which has lace-like flowers. It is a border plant producing domed clusters of tiny flowers. It can also be grown in a cold greenhouse or conservatory.

UNWINS SEEDS

Over the Christmas holiday we were lucky enough to see a wonderful production of Leonard Bernstein’s musical version of Voltaire’s ‘Candide’ at the Menier Chocolate Factory, which is close to Southwark Cathedral in London.

The hero Candide is young and naive but maintains his belief that we live in ‘the best of all possible worlds’, even as he travels around the world being conned and abused by almost everyone he meets. The wonderful score ends with the song ‘Make our Garden Grow’ which is so stirring that it should inspire us all to get outside into our gardens as soon as the weather allows.

All the gardening organisations and seed companies are sending out advice and details

WANTED

Unwins are selling the Rose of the Year 2014 which is called Lady Marmalade. They are also publicising the BBC2 TV programme’ The Great British Garden Revival’ which provides a great winter tonic and reminder of warmer times to come. Gardening programmes are reportedly losing viewers with Gardener’s World particularly badly hit.

MARSHALLS SEEDS

With the dramatically increasing price of potatoes in the shops Marshalls are encouraging people to grow their own and reminding us all to get in our orders for seed potatoes while all the different varieties are available. To go with the new potatoes Marshalls are selling Brundell’s Mint, which comes from a specialist grower outside Norwich.

They also have an Extra Early Brassica Collection which promises early delivery of the plants which allows harvesting as early as May/June.

Pianists in all areas of Norfolk to play a new song for Road Safety Workshops in schools and community groups. Please telephone 01263 512076 or email pepperjane@btinternet.com

ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The RHS suggests that in January we should do the following jobs

Help the Hungry - Putting out food over the winter is a great way to support the wildlife in your garden especially the birds.

Apple and Pear tree pruning – To ensure good crops of fruit it is best to carry out pruning of apples and pears in the winter. The overall aim is to remove dead, old and less productive wood and to reduce congestion.

Plants for winter cheer – Even in the depths of winter it is possible to have plants in bloom in the garden some of which are highly scented. A visit to the winter planting at the Cambridge Botanic Gardens is highly recommended.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETIES

Why not start the New Year by joining your local Garden Club or Horticultural Society and taking part in all the activities they arrange? I must finally return to Voltaire, ‘that is very well said’, replied Candide, ’but we must cultivate our garden’. The photograph is of the famous Borough Market in Southwark at Christmas that shows what we can produce if we cultivate our gardens and allotments. Bob Wilkinson

CROMER IN BLOOM REVIEW OF 2013

2013 was a year of very contrasting weather! Snow and ice for the first few weeks, then a lot of cold rain followed by hot sunshine with very dry conditions. Then, of course, a storm surge to finish.

in Bloom for many years and always supported our work. We are hoping to arrange a small garden containing ornamental trees in Suffield Park in memory of Vera who as a Councillor represented and lived in the area. The Annual Competition was not so well supported this year both in the amount of entries and the attendance at the Presentation Evening. This was again held in the walled garden at Felbrigg Hall, thanks to Ray Sandham, General Manager, National Trust. A raffle raised £75 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Perhaps it is time to re-think this Competition and give it a new look.

During the early bad weather we became involved with Cromer Railway Station. Jim Bond, Stan Foxall (who has been tending the platform planters for several years) and Monica Gepp, together with John Dennis and Carole Blake, who have been appointed Station Adopters, met with Alan Boagey from Greater Anglia Railways to discuss ways to improve the look of the Station. Painting and new signage has been carried out. Litter bins and large planters (although second hand from Norwich Station) were supplied, with large amounts of compost and plants donated by Homebase Cromer. At the recent Greater Anglia Awards Ceremony Cromer won the Most Improved Station Award thanks to John and Carole for keeping the Station clean and tidy and Stan for looking after all the planters. We are told more improvements are planned for 2014.

occasional help from Alan Gepp. Our Chairman, Jim Bond, is still improving and has been able to do some planting this year.

And so another 'Blooming ' year has come to a close. We all hope 2014 will be a good to us all. Our best wishes for a Happy and Peaceful New Year to everyone in Cromer.

Monica Gepp, Vice Chairman

Yoga Classes with Beth

We have managed to do most of the Winter tidy up and planting. Mrs Liz Leeder bought us sixty double tulip bulbs which should brighten up the TIC planters this Spring.

NEW for 2014

In December we again took part in the Christmas Tree Festival. Our tree was sponsored by Homebase Cromer and £180 was raised in our bucket collection for the East Anglian Air Ambulance - our thanks to everyone who contributed. Cromer in Bloom also decorated the entrance hallway and corridor at the Parish Hall for the Christmas Market.

As mentioned earlier the weather held up most of our planned planting, however we did manage to finish before the really dry weather as watering is very difficult. We are gradually changing to more sustainable schemes which we can establish in the Autumn and early Spring. Around the Tourist Information Centre, for example, we are changing to hardy shrubs. Also the island beds are due for a complete replant. There will, of course, still be seasonal bedding. As we are all volunteers we do what we can when we can.

At Sheringham Community Centre Monday 5.00 pm - 6:30 pm Tuesday 9:30 am - 11.00 am Wednesday 5.00 pm - 6.00 pm Thursday 8.00 pm - 9.00 pm

In January all classes only £2.50

If you’re not sure if a class is for you, please give me a ring.

We were pleased to welcome two new ladies to our ranks this year. Debbie Simpson has been doing a great job with the concrete planters at the Bus Station all Summer and Alison Porter (very new) helped with the Christmas arrangements. Many thanks also to Sally Tipple, Secretary, Jackie Land, Treasurer, Committee Members John Pretty, Stan and Betty Foxall, Viv Bateman, Roger Tipple, with

Cromer Academy Codebreakers

Students in years 10 and 11 are having a cracking good time taking on the challenge of the National Cipher Competition 2013. After 006 rounds they find themselves in joint first place with other schools from all over the UK including tertiary colleges and universities, and they are feeling pretty confident about round 007. This is an annual competition organised by the University of Southampton and supported by Trinity College, Cambridge and GCHQ with numerous companies sponsoring the challenge. The students Andra Chirnicinii, Harry Dennison, Jordan Truong, Joe Wynne and Wei Xu can be found every Thursday from 3.15pm, when the new challenge is published, until very late breaking the code and secretly posting their solution. They have not had breakfast in a classroom yet but it has been very close at times. This is just another example of Cromer Academy students taking on the challenge and beating it. Who knows, maybe the next Alan Turing is studying at Cromer right now.

ROTARY SLEIGH RAISES NEARLY £1,200

The Christmas Sleigh collection organised annually by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary club raised £1,173. This year’s collection was in aid of the Cromer and Sheringham Lifeboat Stations.

The sleigh spent a Friday and Saturday outside Morrisons in Cromer and the following Monday and Tuesday evenings toured the streets of Cromer. The Morrisons collection raised £371and £507 respectively, whilst the tours around Cromer realised £133 and £162.

Rotarian Donald Mayes, who organised the event, said ‘We would like to thank everyone who gave so generously. We are delighted with the outcome – particularly as the money will go to two very worth local causes’.

Cromer Academy Shoebox Appeal Cromer Academy students once again provided some Christmas cheer for the homeless and poor children of Serbia in their annual Christmas Shoe Box appeal. For the last 8 years, students from the Academy have been filling shoe boxes full of gifts and toys for the children of Novi Sad, one of Norwich's twin Cities, for the Samaritan's Purse charity.

The Academy prides itself on its fundraising activities having already raised thousands of pounds for local charities such as the East Anglian Air Ambulance, ‘About with Friends’, Cromer RNLI, Rainbow Trust, Cromer Foodbank and MacMillan Cancer Trust. Each year the Shoe Box Appeal goes from strength to strength, allowing students to do something for children their own age, many hundreds of miles away. For the fifth year running, Cromer Academy students, supported by their friends and families, and members of the local community have produced by far the largest number of boxes of any school in the County. This years' total of 201 Shoe Boxes surpassed all expectations, and proved that whatever hardships the current economic climate brings to youngsters in the area, they are always willing to help those less fortunate.

Pens, notebooks, toothpaste, toothbrushes,

hats, scarves, gloves, and cuddly toys were among gifts included in the boxes, along with messages of goodwill which have this week left Norfolk on the long journey by lorry across Europe. Nearly 10,000 boxes were collected across the county from schools, church groups, and individuals this year, all put together,

checked, and organised by a willing band of volunteers, before they arrive in Novi Sad in time for Christmas.

Cromer Academy Assistant Headteacher Chris Carey, who organises the Shoe Box Appeal each year, was once again amazed at the efforts of the students.

"Each year we put out this appeal to our students, with information regarding the plight of other children in cities across Europe less fortunate than themselves. Every year they amaze us with their reaction. We are by no means the biggest of schools but the number of boxes our students manage to put together astounds us each year when we put them all together for collection. To once again produce such a huge number of boxes says an awful lot about the school and its students. They can be extremely proud of their efforts which go such a long way to providing something for children who otherwise would have nothing. I can only thank the students, their families, and everyone else in the local community who have contributed to this year's effort."

Collection at Morrisons Supermarket in aid of MacMillan

We would just like to say a huge thank you to Morrisons Supermarket in Cromer, the staff and Manager, our collectors and finally YOU the very generous people of North Norfolk!

The magnificent sum of £1622.90 was collected over the two days, 19 and 20 December, and has been given to the North Norfolk Branch of MacMillan. We really appreciate everyone’s generosity whether it be their time or money!

What a great place to live!

Thank you Diane Evans & Elaine Twinn Committee members of North Norfolk Committee for MacMillan

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although the message on the answer phone says that we are closed over the Christmas period there are still some messages left, which Stephanie does listen to. A call from a gentleman regarding a “stray pregnant cat” on a car park obviously needed a return call to assess the situation. After speaking to the gentleman Stephanie contacted one of our volunteers who kindly agreed to go and pick up the cat so that she was safe should the birth of the kittens be imminent. This was not just a two minute visit down the road but involved a round trip of about 20 miles.

On reaching the car park our volunteer found the cat sitting next to a plate with a cat basket close by. She secured the cat and put her in her car. On going back to the place where she found the cat she was approached by someone who asked if she had just taken the cat. On confirming she had and the reasons why, the person, who lived near the car park, stated it was her cat (apparently the dish and basket are there for another cat). She became very aggressive to our volunteer, stating that the cat was not pregnant, we should have put up posters, checked

with the vets and knocked on all the doors nearby to find out whose cat it was. Can you imagine the response our volunteer would have received if she had done this, particularly as it happened to be Boxing Day? Bearing in mind we were under the Poppy - lovely young cat handed into care impression the cat was as a stray last year pregnant (she did have one of those low undercarriages neutered cats often have), our main aim was to ensure the cat was safe in case she needed veterinary care. Contacting vets to let them know the cat was in our care would have been a priority once they had opened after the holiday but not possible while cover was being offered by another practice, not in the immediate vicinity. Most people would be relieved to learn that their cat’s welfare had been considered to be important but, sadly, not in this instance. From our point of view it was a blessing not to start the New Year with a pregnant cat and to thank our volunteer to coming to the rescue and responding to a request for help.

Microchipping

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit

your

Dog

www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham

for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Last year the Government announced it will become law for all dogs to be permanently identified by a ‘micro-chip’ by 2016. These ‘chips’ are the size of a grain of rice and placed into the scruff of the animal’s neck between the shoulder blades. It is a simple, painless procedure which can be carried out without the need for anaesthetic or sedation. There is no age limit for microchipping and it can be carried out on dogs, cats, tortoises and rabbits. Miramar vets is supporting the Government’s decision to make microchipping compulsory by offering the microchips at the reduced price of £15.00 for the whole of February. (usual price is £25) If you would like your pet microchipped please ring us to book an appointmen and bring the coupon with you.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

REVIEW - SOUTHREPPS CHORALE AND NORFOLK BRASS - CROMER PARISH CHURCH Stephen Richards, the musical director and conductor of the Southrepps Chorale, along with Geoff Barber, the director and conductor of Norfolk Brass, presented a programme so appropriate, especially as we move into Advent with Christmas fast approaching.

A rousing piece - Intrada for Antiphonal Brass by Melchior Franck - opened the concert where the players were divided - performing within the north and south aisles, which apart from some initial intonation problems, really captured the attention of everyone in the church, and probably outside! The Chorale performed a set of four pieces, Ava Maria with soloist Kathryn Tillyard, Music Alone Shall Live, All Ye Who Music Love and Panis Angellicus - Cesar Franck. Here the Brass accompaniment somewhat overpowered the voices, a lesson to be learned perhaps. Following this, Norfolk Brass played Frere Jacques and Beethoven Beano, the latter a fun piece involving snippets of well known Beethoven writings with pieces by other composers.

The programme continued in the same format throughout the evening with three more sets from Norfolk Brass and four sets from the choir - with outstanding performances by both choir and brass - these being Rhythm of Life from Sweet Charity, trombone solo in Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair by Stephan Foster, arr Roger Harvey, Wherever You Are by Paul Mealor, Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen and Coventry Carol and Maleguena by Ernesto Lecuona, arr Stuart Malcolm.

The choir brought this very entertaining concert to a close in performing the Hallelujah Chorus and Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis. A fitting end indeed, albeit the tempo of the Hallelujah Chorus was rather slow.

David Hillery, pianist accompanist, must be mentioned because of his obvious musicianship, especially in the Handel where one’s hands need to be warm!

How encouraging it is to know that the Southrepps Chorale has only been formed in the last two years, bringing together approximately 50 plus singers who so obviously enjoy what they do. Great credit must be conveyed to Stephan Richards and David Hillery for what must have been many hours of devoted tuition and practice sessions - Gareth Malone for Southrepps? Not required!

The concert was in aid of the Cromer Bells Restoration project which, according to Dr Maureen Gardiner - the driving force behind the fund raising - has almost reached the requirement to restore and add to the bells within Cromer Parish Church. A tremendous achievement. Terry Keeler

REVIEW - CYAN TRACES (JAZZ QUINTET) - THE ROCKET HOUSE CAFE, CROMER

The Christmas spirit was alive and well within the walls of this popular seaside venue. Every table was booked, accommodating the enthusiastic gathering of food, wine and jazz devotees.

Cyan Traces, led by Dave Amis (trombone), backed by Tom Harris (piano), Ivars Galenieks (bass) and percussionist Alex Best, played a programme of numbers all having a festive flavour.

Holly Graham (vocals) sang in almost every number in the two sets in her easy going style, although it was difficult to appreciate her performance because of so much chatter from the gathering of people, determined to enjoy the occasion. It is a shame that an ensemble of such talented musicians became providers of background music, but this seems to be the norm these days.

The band played music by Irving Goodman, Billy Hayes, Johnny Marks, Jack Fox, Leroy Anderson, Mel Torme and Joan Javitts, to name but a few. The highlights for me in the first set was Have a Holly Jolly Christmas in which Tom Harris, a truly gifted jazz pianist, produced superb improvisatory passages with Ivar Halenieks matching this with some wizardry on acoustic bass.

Mary’s Boy Child in calypso style, where all soloists excelled in this second set especially in Holy Night in 12/8 time and Away in a Manger, followed by We Wish you a Merry Christmas closed the sets.

Dave Amis who was responsible for arrangements, added codas and ideas and interpretations created an interesting impression on the two sets of basic Christmas music.

As the evening drew to a close, and conversations waned, it was really good to hear the music! Terry Keeler

Sixty Years of Blowing his Own Trumpet … Sorry, Blowing his Own Cornet

Peter Golden was recently presented with an inscribed carriage clock and a certificate in recognition of his long service with the Cromer & Sheringham Brass Band.

Peter took up the cornet at the age of 14 and has been an enthusiastic musician ever since. In recent years he has occupied the key position of soprano cornet.

The presentation was made by Mr Peter Sladden, right of photo, the Band’s President, at the Christmas Concert in St Peter’s Church, Sheringham. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Peter s having to retire his cornet to its case and his seat in the Band has become vacant. A respected and very skilled musician, Peter will be greatly missed.

If there are any musicians who feel they have the skill to occupy the vacated position, or any other position in the Band – beginners are also welcome – please contact Steve Askew, the Band’s Secretary on 01263 838411 or stephenaskew@hotmail.com. Alternatively visit the Band’s website at www.cromerandsheringhambrassband.com.

Cromer Academy fundraises for local charities

Two local charities received cheques for £500 each after students from Cromer Academy completed a sponsored walk in their honour. Steve Smith, Work Skills Manager at ‘About with Friends’ and Clara Mears, Fundraising Co-ordinator for the East Anglian Air Ambulance visited the school on Monday 2 December to talk to the students during a special assembly about their respective charities and to receive their donations. Cheques were presented to both charities by the academies head boy, Jake Lomax and head girl, Beth Adams during the assembly. Cromer Academy students have also been working hard all year to raise funds for several local charities. In March this year, students handed over £550 to the Cromer Skate Park Fund & £600 to Cromer RNLI from monies raised from the academies RAG week. They have also supported The Rainbow Trust by holding a cake sale during the Sports Extravaganza, raising £196.45, Macmillan Cancer Support by holding a coffee morning for staff and students, raising £125.83 and Cromer Foodbank Trust where students donated an amazing ¼ tonne of food, again, as part of the academies RAG week.

The past year has been as varied as usual but this time, unlike 2012, we had a long run of fine weather from July onwards and very little in the way of cold weather in the last three months of the year. The first six months were generally cold/cool but with an above average content of high pressure especially to the north, rainfall was below average . Of note was the persistence of a north or north-east wind off the cold North Sea . As we enter 2014 expect a continuation of what we have been having in December as the Atlantic still has plenty of energy in this year. Towards the middle of January we start to see overall pressure rising giving rise to more stability in the atmosphere so subsequently there will be more

chance of some less olatile weather. To sum up for February and March it looks like temperatures will average out a little below average and under high pressure conditions there will be some decidedly cold overnight temperatures in March. Only towards the end of March will there be any fine, warm weather and this is likely to be short lived.

Should I have a Survey done? Written by Richard Hewitt – Partner at Hayes + Storr

You have found that perfect property to buy, and your offer has been accepted. You have been round the house a few times and everything looks lovely and the coffee smelt wonderful!

not go into a great amount of detail nor will it give you a valuation of the property. These are often used if you are purchasing a modern property in apparent good condition.

If it is only your money you are using to buy the property you do not have to have a survey done; it is your important decision. Some reasons to consider are set out later, but first, what are the different types of surveys?

and maintenance, a list of issues that require investigation so as to avoid future problems and defects and identification of any legal issues that require addressing and information on the location and local environment. These are often used if you are purchasing a standard older or modern property that appears in reasonable condition.

So, do you need to spend all that money on a survey? Well, it depends. If you are borrowing money from a bank or building society, a valuation survey will be required, and your mortgage offer letter should explain the cost.

There are four main types and they increase in cost from £150 or so, upto and beyond £1,000.

MORTGAGE VALUATION

This is just the lender checking that the value of the property is sufficient to cover its loan to you. It does not offer you, as a buyer, any protection.

A HOME CONDITION REPORT

The report will provide you with clear “traffic light” ratings indicating the condition of different parts of the building, services, garage and outbuildings drawing attention to obvious defects that require attention. This survey will

A HOME BUYER REPORT

The report includes all of the features in the Home Condition Report as well as a more extensive inspection, a valuation of the property by the surveyor, an insurance reinstatement figure for the property, a list of defects or potential defects that could affect the value of the property, advice on repairs

A DETAILED BUILDING SURVEY

Also known as a ‘structural survey’. This report includes a thorough inspection and a detailed report, a description of visible defects and potential issues, the repair options available and the implications of taking no remedial action. These are often used if you are purchasing a larger, or older/run down, altered or unusual property or if you are intending to carry out major works to the property

Shall I have a survey?

• The purchase of a house is, for most of us, the single biggest financial commitment we will ever make.

• Failure to have a survey may leave you

with having to spend thousands that you had not budgeted for, and to problems selling on in due course .

• On the other hand, estimated costs of repairing identified problems, set out in a full survey, gives you important budgeting information, and if the problems have come as a surprise to you, may result in you not going ahead, saving you from an expensive mistake, or justify a renegotiation of the agreed price.

Our advice is simply to make sure you learn everything you can about the property you are buying, and that should include getting a survey.

Which Surveyor?

Look for a surveyor with Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) membership who is used to surveying properties in this area. Any surveyor should give his or her professional view up front as to the most appropriate survey for the property you are interested in.

If you require advice on this or any other legal matter please contact the team at our Sheringham office on 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

FLYING OF CROMER TOWN FLAG FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS From early in 2014, members of the public wishing to mark a special birthday or anniversary will be able to arrange for the Cromer Town Flag to be flown on the flagpole in Cromer Churchyard. A fee of £25 will be charged and all proceeds will go towards the repair/replacement of Cromer’s WWI War Memorial. Details will be tweeted on the Town Council twitter page @north_lodge on the day the flag is flown. Application forms are available from the Town Council Office, by email to admin@cromertown.org and will also be available on the Town Council Website.

CEREMONIES AT NORTH LODGE We are now offering Duo Ceremonies. This provides the opportunity (weather permitting) to hold part of the ceremony outside in the walled garden overlooking the sea. The legal part of the ceremony must still take place in the Chamber inside North Lodge which is licensed for marriage, civil partnership, renewal of vows and baby naming ceremonies. There is also now very limited availability for ceremonies to be held at 7pm. Further details are on the town council website or are available on request from the town council office.

Women’s Ashes Stars Inspire Pupils at Cromer Academy Lydia Greenway and Heather Knight both spent Tuesday 10 December at Cromer Academy, before finding out they were both in the squad for the next Women’s Ashes series yesterday.

Left-hand batter Greenway scored the winning runs in the fourth match of this summer’s successful Ashes series for England with a knock of 80 not out from 64 balls in the deciding one-day match.

England captain Charlotte Edwards described Greenway’s performance, which saw England bounce back from 9 for 3 when chasing down 128, as “probably the best one-day innings I’ve ever seen.”

Cromer Academy’s Assistant headteacher and PE teacher, Chris Carey, said “The girls were absolutely fantastic, the pair of them. They showed some video clips of them performing in the summer and then led a Q&A session, and it really was good. The girls of Cromer Academy really are inspired by them.”

Both players stayed for another event at Cromer Academy in the evening, hosted by Cromer Cricket Club, who invited other local clubs Bradfield, Sheringham and

They also led a three-hour coaching session with the Cromer Academy girls in the afternoon, with Mr Carey explaining “it was all part of an initiative we are part of through the Norfolk Cricket Board and Chance to Shine, which is to encourage more girls to get involved in cricket. So we’ve started a girls cricket club within the school, with all the different usual roles of a club, like secretary, treasurer, someone being responsible for the kit. So it’s not just about training, it’s about getting the girls involved in cricket, not just playing. We have some girls who don’t actually play but because their friends do, they get involved with the non-playing roles. It’s to
