Society Celebrates Centenary! Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society are celebrating their 100th year in 2014. They have many events planned, the first of which was this photo on Cromer beach with over 100 members of the society making the number 100 on Cromer beach.
The age range of CSODS members in the photo was from someone in their nineties to a seven year old junior member who is just about to start rehearsals for the musical Oliver!
Some of those present had been in the society over forty years while for others this is the first year of membership. This award winning society have raised thousands of pounds for various charities, both local and national over the years, and this year are raising money for ‘About with Friends’ a Cromer based charity that helps adults with learning difficulties live the lives they choose, the Sheringham Salvation Army’s Christmas care project, ‘Toy and Tins’ which is being run in conjunction with Norfolk Radio, and ‘Changing Faces’ a national charity that helps those with facial disfigurements.

Society Celebrates Centenary!
Continued from front cover... Details of the society and the shows and celebrations they have planned in this very special year can be found on their new website. www.CSODS.com
Links Country Park Golf Club West Runton
The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society would like to thank everyone who has supported the society by coming to the shows, and also we would like to thank the local press for allowing us to share our productions and projects with the wonderful people of North Norfolk. We look forward to sharing more fantastic shows with you as we embark our second century!
Are you friendly and outgoing? Do you have a few hours to spare per month?
You could change the life of a child or young person.
Action for Children’s Norfolk Independent Visitor Service is looking for volunteers to befriend young people who are looked after by Norfolk Children’s Services and who have little or no contact with their families.
Young people who are in care, experience huge change in their lives, can be very isolated and emotionally vulnerable. Volunteers act as adult role models and enable children to have someone who is outside of ‘the system’ in their life. Someone who is there just for them.
Volunteers offer a listening ear, understanding, support and encouragement and have lots of fun in the process! Volunteers get to take their young person out on trips and visits to places such as the beach, cinema and zoo or they often simply have a kick around in the park or sit and chat together over a coffee.
You don’t have to have experience to volunteer you just need to be committed to the improving the life of children and have some free time on a regular basis.
For more information please contact Steph at the Norfolk Independent Visitors Service on 01362 697537 or 07843345740, or e-mail: independentvisitors.norfolk@actionforchildren.org.uk Website: www.actionforchildren.org.uk

Dear Margaret,
It seems staggering that January's cabinet meeting at North Norfolk District Council has been cancelled due to a "lack of business". Individuals in the Tory administration have privately said much of the key decision making at the council goes on in these meetings, so I'm surprised they have found nothing to talk about at such an important time. What's worse is that the administration explained on Twitter the decision was made in the middle of December - seemingly days after the floods hit the coastal areas of our district. What sort of message does this send out to the communities wanting more action on flood defences from both council and the government? The council will also shortly decide where the axe will fall for the next round of budget savings - which includes negotiations over our towns CCTV systems - these meetings should be used to give the public an opportunity to have their say before the final decisions are taken. There is no word on whether allowances will be deducted for the reported shortage of business to deal with. Jono Read, Holt Cromer Times 438 February 1st 2014

Proud run in national competition finally comes to end for Cromer Academy U15 Boys’ Football Team
Cromer Academy U15 Boys’ Football Team finally bowed out of the English Schools FA Trophy for small schools at the semi-final stage losing 2-1 away to last year’s beaten finalists, Ibstock Place School in SW London.
It was a very competitive game in which Cromer took the lead through a twenty yard strike from Ieuan Lightfoot midway through the first half. Cromer started the second half well pressing the opposition high up the pitch and playing some good passing football culminating in several chances, but they were unable to find the back of the net. In the final twenty minutes the Cromer boys continued to give their all to defend their slender lead. Alas, it was not to be as Ibstock piled on the pressure to score twice in the last 10 minutes.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
We are already half way through the month of January and we have started planning our Mothers Day Luncheon, but first we have to complete our preparations for Valentine’s Day, which this year is on a Friday.
We will of course be offering our usual romantic Valentines Day Menu and this year extending the celebrations to the 15th with a special Sharers Menu served in the bar and again offering our Valentines Menu as well as our as usual Evening Restaurant Menu.
To add to the atmosphere we have live music in the bar on the Friday and Saturday night.
We have also arranged a special pre- and post-Pantomime Menu for the Overstrand Pantomime ‘Sleeping Bewty’ which is being staged at the Parish Hall on the 20th - 22nd February 7.30pm as part of our charity fund-raising events for Nelson’s Journey.
It should be a really fun evening and we thought it would be a good idea to offer a special meal deal by way of a thank you to both the audience and of course the ‘thespians’, many of whom are regulars at the White Horse.
Don’t forget we are still running our ‘2 fo1 Meal Deal’ Monday - Friday lunchtimes and our ‘Speciality Food Nights’ are also making a welcome return every Wednesday evening starting in February.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week 24 February – 2 March
Beat – the Norwich-based national eating disorders charity celebrates its 25th anniversary during 2014
2014 is extra special as awareness week marks the start of Beat’s 25th anniversary. Since 1989 we have been supporting those with an eating disorder as well as their family and friends, providing information through our Helplines, UK wide network of self help and support groups and online support; providing expert training and resources to professionals and schools; supporting and encouraging research and campaigning for better services and access to treatment.
To mark our special year on Wednesday 22 October we shall be holding a Memorial Service in Norwich Cathedral remembering those who’ve lost their lives to eating disorders. Attending will be family and friends from across the UK who’ve lost a loved one or experienced the distress these devastating illnesses can cause.
Raising awareness is a serious matter, but it can be fun too. During the week we run our Sock it to Eating Disorders fundraising campaign and encourage people to get silly with their socks and raise funds for Beat. Supporters can hold silly sock days at school or work, organise a sock themed bake sale or take part in a sponsored event in bright and funny socks. This year the campaign is being supported by Britain’s Got Talent winners dance group Diversity.

The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club
The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club were formed in April 2011 and as we were only few in number we had to be a Branch Club of Taverham & District Lions Club. But I am pleased to announce that on 24 October 2013 we were granted our Charter which means that we are a fully functioning Club in our own right.
The aim of Lions Clubs is to provide financial and physical support in the community in which it is based. This may come in many forms and is usually requested to provide funds for some need where somebody or organisation cannot provide the funds themselves. An example of this is where a disabled person, by needing a different wheelchair because of a change in their circumstances, will need a different or modified shed to store the chair. The Lions have not only provided funds for the modification but undertook to see the work done. The pool of funds to support the help we offer is raised by holding street collections, attending fetes etc. with our Lion Tombola
Stall, Bric-a-Brac Stall etc. Also by holding Quiz & Chips evenings etc. Being a lion is not all work we also have a very active social side where we arrange Theatre trips, Brewery visits, Darts or Carpet Bowls evenings etc.
The idea of this is that we can supply you, completely free, with a small container which you can put in the fridge. The container will have inside it a form which you complete with your details of any health problems you may have and also details of medications you are taking. We also supply two small green stickers - you put one of these on your fridge door and the other on or near your front door. Should anything happen to you and the paramedics or other emergency services have to call they will look for these stickers and go to the fridge so that they are made aware of your health problems. If you would like a MIB please feel free to call Lion Brian on the number below.
Throughout the year Lion Clubs collect used spectacles through a network of spectacle boxes in local chemists and hospital. Most of the recycled glasses are distributed to people in need in developing countries where they will have the greatest impact. The Sheringham & Cromer Lions like other Lions Clubs support the Lions Recycle for Sight program and we have collecting boxes in Lloyd's Chemist, Sheringham and Cromer Hospital. So please if you have some old pairs of glasses in your dresser drawers or in an old desk that you no longer need please pop them into one of our collecting boxes or you can call Lion Brian on the number below and we can arrange collection. We also collect hearing aids.
If you would like us to collect some spectacles or would like a MIB or just like to see what we do or are interested in becoming a Lion please contact Lion Brian on 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com.
Another ongoing scheme that many Lions Clubs operate is Message in a Bottle (MIB).
Record Passenger Numbers on Poppy Line Record passenger numbers last year on the North Norfolk Railway have now been confirmed.
The Poppy Line carried 157,800 passengers in 2013, a rise of 6% over 2012 and an all-time record for the line. The previous best was 150,497 in 2011.
General Manager Trevor Eady said "Our volunteers and staff have produced an outstanding result, especially given the year's constraints on disposable income and a weather-hit Spring Gala at the start of the season. Key factors in the performance were an excellent August, and record traffic levels at Day Out With Thomas in May, the summer Steam Gala, and the September '40s Weekend."

It's All in the Family at Upstairs Downstairs One of the newest shops in Cromer has a very interesting and long history, despite opening just last November. Formerly located at Alby, two different shops have merged and relocated to Church Street, providing an eclectic mix of cards and gifts for every occasion.
Kate Turnbull, partner Ben Murphy (not the actor from alias Smith & Jones), Ben's brother Max and his partner Emma Dent, plus the brothers' mum Jane (and dad James) all have different areas of expertise and speciality knowledge of the products they sell.
Kate commented, "We always try to stock locally and where not then British, but what we do have are items not generally available elsewhere in North Norfolk. Our customers have been very impressed with what we have and this has been proved in the two months we have been here, it's been very busy in the Christmas period, but also now in January, when business usually slows down."
Jane's expertise in the area of glass and bronzes, with some very interesting vases, Emma concentrates on jewellery, with items ranging from about £2 upwards. Ben has over 1000 different card designs to choose from and Max organises the prints, with some wonderful stock of animal designs.
Despite the name Upstairs, Downstairs, it should really be Upstairs, Upstairs, Downstairs as the shop is located on three floors and Kate's expertise in toys (for up to primary school age), especially traditional wooden,
are located on the top floor along with a mix of other stock - not to be missed.
Kate continued, "in the future we will continue to rotate our stock regularly so that there is always something different and new, unique to our shop...." "Where else will you find a shop like this?"
The Cromer Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel (SNAP) meeting was held on Tuesday 13 January at the Cromer Town Council Offices.
The below priorities were agreed to take forward: • Tackle speeding in identified areas
• Promotion of cycle safety - targeting bike users without lights. Also promote cycle security at bike marking days and bikeregister.com
• Undertake high visibility patrols in Cromer, concentrating on Promenade and areas in the town with the highest number of pedestrians. Officers also to patrol beauty spots and car parks in surrounding parishes.
These will be reported on at the next meeting which is due to be held on Monday 24 March at 6.30pm at Cromer Town Council Offices, North Lodge Park, Cromer.

RNLI to launch national WW1 touring exhibition featuring inspirational lifeboat rescues The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is to feature six inspirational lifeboat rescues within its national touring exhibition entitled Hope in the Great War, commemorating the centenary of World War One (WW1). The free-to-attend charity exhibition, funded by Arts Council England, will honour the bravery of RNLI volunteers who risked their lives to save others during WW1 by raising awareness of six relatively unknown heroic lifeboat rescues.
Open to the public from 4 February to 28 February at the RNLI’s Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer, Hope in the Great War will start a 4-year tour of RNLI and other museums and of RNLI lifeboat stations. Hope in the Great War will highlight the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people who volunteered for the RNLI throughout the war years, conveying a sense of hope as many lives were saved at sea by the charity. The exhibition offers an ideal way for families and young children to learn about the work of RNLI volunteers during WW1 and will feature a play area for younger children.
on 9 January 1917.
• The 1914 Whitby RNLI lifeboat rescue of the wrecked hospital ship HMHS Rohilla which saw 144 people saved from the sea.
• Fraserburgh RNLI lifeboat’s rescue of the steamer SS Glenravel which saw 14 people saved from the sea on 8 August 1915.
• RNLI Port Eynon lifeboat’s service to the Dunvegan that took place 1 January 1916.
The exhibition was made possible by an Arts Council England grant of £78,200 awarded to the RNLI in order to share more widely the role of the charity’s coastal community volunteers during WW1 to help mark the centenary.
• The saving of 20 lives from the tanker Ponus on 3 November 1916 by Falmouth RNLI lifeboat crew and service men.
• The rescue of 23 survivors from the SS Alondra which was wrecked on the Kedge Rock off Baltimore on 29 December 1916 by Baltimore volunteers together with two Royal Naval trawlers.
The RNLI has been working with local community groups to create inspirational artworks that interpret their own local lifesaving story. These items, including a giant jigsaw, a podcast and an animation, will be included in the exhibition and allow the fullest story of the rescues to be told nationally, in an interactive and engaging manner.
BLUE WILLOW Tea Rooms
Come and experience our all day freshly cooked breakfasts, light lunches and fabulous homemade cream teas and cakes.
The lifeboat services to feature within the exhibition include:
A family run traditional tea room with lace table cloths and Blue Willow china.
• Cromer RNLI lifeboat’s rescue of the Pyrin and Fernebo, which saw 33 people saved from the sea

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
With Spring now fast approaching, it is time to make that important decision to get your cat neutered to avoid unwanted pregnancies and having to find homes for the resulting kittens or place them into our care because homes cannot be found (we had 153 kittens in care last year). Obviously it is important that the female cats are neutered but equally so to neuter the males who will travel miles to find an unneutered female and consequently take the risk of being hit by a car on busy roads or contacting FIV or FELV from other unneutered toms. This is born out from our recent experiences as at present we have three cats in care, all male, all with FIV, and all have come into care as strays, although it is obvious they have had homes in the past as they were all very friendly and affectionate. As they have very likely strayed from their original homes in search of females and got into fights with infected cats, they will now all need new indoor homes either as the only cat or with other cats infected with FIV. Bombadier, Jude and Granville are all such lovely cats and if only their owners had got them neutered, perhaps this would not have happened.
Last year, as is usual, we received a grant from our Head Office to pay/help pay for neutering cats where the owner could not afford to, but
this had all been spent by April. All help with neutering from May to December came from branch funds. Although we are happy to help with the cost of neutering (both females £26, and males - £20) we hope that people who can afford to pay for this will do so. It takes a lot of time and effort to raise money for the branch and we need to ensure the money is spent in an appropriate manner.
Percy - this little black cat with the white medallion is the only one of his litter still in care. He is lovely friendly lad so hopefully will get a home soon.
As I prepared this article I heard from Stephanie that she had just taken in seven cats (a mum and six 9 month old kittens) plus five 4 week old kittens and the next day a further five kittens would be coming into care from another household. If only their owners had got the cats neutered! There is now “no more room at the inn”.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
Walking in a Winter Wonderland
Caring for your dog is a year round job, but in the cold weather we need to pay extra attention to the health and wellbeing of our four legged friends. Here are our top tips on keeping your dog in tip top condition during the winter months: • Grab your coat and walk off the winter blues. Although you may not feel like going for a walk on dark wintry mornings and evenings, try to maintain a regular routine as the exercise will keep you both, happy, healthy and fit.

• Be seen. Always wear reflective clothing to make yourself visible in the dark. The same applies to your dog; invest in a reflective dog coat, collar or lead.
• Prevent sore paws. Rock salt is used to melt ice on footpaths and may irritate the paw pads, always rinse and dry your dog's feet when you get home to avoid cracked, sore pads.
• Stop snow balls. The fur between the toes should be kept short to avoid uncomfortable snow balls forming when out on a wintery walk.
• Wrap up warm. Older dogs or those with short, fine coats will especially feel the cold; consider keeping them warm in a cosy dog coat.
• Feeling thirsty? Don’t let your dog drink from puddles; they could contain traces of Antifreeze which is poisonous. It smells and tastes good to your dog, but it can be lethal.
• It’s cold outside. Don’t leave your dog out in the garden for long periods of time in cold weather, if it’s too cold for you to sit outside then it’s too cold for them.
• Be safe not sorry. Always consult your Vet if you are concerned about your dog’s health.

favourite TV programme”. This was BYGONES and we were entertained by stories and anecdotes from the programme and of the times that Eddie was the presenter. The programme ran for 21 years and was revived again in 2007. He came armed with a basket of relics from the show and these were explained to us with great gusto including a mole catcher, bloodletting instruments, a WW1 folding saw, ox shoes, an artificial hip joint, flintnappers’ goggles and a hook for getting the bucket out of the well. There was also a 7000 year old axe head. Mystery objects were sent in to the programme and viewers helped to identify them. Along with each item we were given descriptions and stories of where they

Overstrand Evening WI
At the January meeting of Overstrand Evening W.I., members sat back and listened to Lorna Fish’s talk about Local History. Lorna centred her presentation on working families in Northrepps, as well as touching on areas of Overstrand and Southrepps. Photographs of her family and groups of villagers along with memorabilia and booklets provided added interest to Lorna’s talk; giving us an insight into rural village life during the 1800 and 1900’s.
Our first walk of the year will be to Cromer, starting from Pauls Lane Car Park at 10.30 a.m. on Friday 24th January. On Wednesday 19th February Monica Gepp will talk on the subject of Cromer in Bloom’. We welcome visitors and prospective new members to both our walks and monthly meetings. Meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

District Council offices to accommodate County Council Northern Area Children’s Services team
Agreement has been reached for members of Norfolk County Council’s Northern Area Children’s Services team to be accommodated in North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) offices in Cromer.
In April, staff from the County Council’s Northern Area Children’s Services team will move from their current office, primarily in North Walsham, to their new base in Cromer.
NNDC Leader Tom FitzPatrick said “This is excellent news for everyone involved. Basing the Northern Area Children’s Services team in Cromer will make it much easier for District and County Council staff to work together for the benefit of vulnerable families living in this part of Norfolk.
“It also makes sound economic sense. The District Council has streamlined its operation to become more efficient at what it does and now employs fewer staff, while continuing to maintain our front-line services, so we have space available in our Cromer offices. We have agreed a 10 year lease with the County Council, at a commercial rent. As well as being good for our residents, his agreement will also be a more efficient use of public assets. We look forward to working more closely with our County Council colleagues at all levels in the future.”
James Joyce, Cabinet Member for Safeguarding Children at Norfolk County Council, said “This is good move which will benefit families in North Norfolk, as it means both councils will be able to work more closely together to support those in need.
“We want to work collaboratively with our partners wherever possible to share resources and make the best use of taxpayers’ money. This move will also give staff the opportunity to work in modern, open plan offices, making it easier to share information and work more efficiently.”
Cromer Youth Hub and Halsey House Care Home Get Together
HANDYMAN Clint Brown Property Services
On 7 December a group of young people from Cromer’s Youth Hub visited elderly residents at Halsey House. The British Legion funded care home for ex-forces personnel were delighted to have the group visit on the Saturday morning in their games room. The group of six young people spent time playing board games and swapping winning tips with residents, and getting to know each other. The North Norfolk Youth Hubs project, funded by the county’s Youth Advisory Board, assists young people in having more involvement within their communities. Young people take the lead role in coming up with ideas for projects, and organising themselves so that the activities run smoothly. Youth Worker, Will Mills, said “This project was a fantastic example of how much young people can contribute to their communities. Their energy, ideas and enthusiasm is really inspiring. I’m excited to see what they come up with next.”

THE CROMER TIMES
WHEN RESPONDING TO SERVICE GUIDE ADVERTS!
CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY The society’s programme for 2014 contains enough variety to satisfy all tastes as we look forward to talks by a number of local gardening experts.
Topics to be covered include British wild flowers, fuchsias, the story of the walled kitchen garden and methods of propagating plants and shrubs. In addition we will be holding an open Spring show in April, members shows in July and September and a plant sale in May. A number of visits are being planned for the summer. Members pay £10 a year and new members are always welcome. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 7.30 pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 12 February when Richard Hobbs will be speaking about trees and shrubs. Phone 01263 514399 for details.
Thirty two members were at our January meeting when Chris Wright from Holt Hall talked about the opportunities that exist for using containers in the garden. These can be of wood, terracotta, plastic, polystyrene or metal, anything in fact as long as they fulfil their main function of allowing gardeners to grow plants, shrubs, vegetables or fruit in places to suit their individual needs. Proper drainage is important and some containers can pose specific problems. Terracotta pots can dry out quickly but if lined with cardboard or newspaper will not be a problem. Metal pots can heat up very rapidly so location is important. We were shown photos of guttering being used to grow salad crops which need only a few inches of compost. Empty polythene bags if turned inside out can be used to grow early potatoes and are as efficient as the hessian sacks that many people buy. Compost should be added as the shoots

grow and if started in January/early February will produce a crop by early May.
The advantages of using containers are fairly obvious. You can choose the most suitable location for the plants you are growing and containers can be moved fairly easily. They can be grouped together to make watering and feeding easier. Watering should be done in the late afternoon to give plants time to absorb the water. Anglian Water’s website has a section giving tips on how to water the garden effectively. Containers can make successional sowing easier as well. Fruit trees grafted onto the right root stock are ideal for containers where space is an issue.
Members were all agreed that the new gardening year had got off to a flying start. All we need now is for the weather to return to what we regard as “normal” and we will be well set for the year.

Copeman won the opening game of the final but Baker, the No.2 seed, still hits the ball as cleanly as anybody at the club and he drew level as he convincingly took the second game. The key game was the third one which was very tight and closely contested but it was the No. 1 seed who took it to open up a 2-1 lead and with Baker, visibly tiring in the fourth, Copeman One Church, Two Worship Centres, Four congregations dominated the game to win the Every Sunday ……. match 3-1 and take the veterans 9.00am @ The Parish Church – quieter & more traditional crown for the first time.
Both players had won their semifinals in straight games with Copeman defeating Gary Spruce, who was the beaten finalist in the Over 35 tournament, and Baker beating Martin Braybrook.
Afterwards Copeman said "It is always nice to win a tournament and get your name on the honours board. I am really grateful to Gary Spruce for agreeing to re-arrange the time of our semi-final and I felt really bad when I beat him 3-0. I knew John would push me hard in the final and the third game proved to be decisive."
10.30am @ The Parish Church – all age & contemporary 10.30am @ St Martin’s – smaller & more intimate 6.30pm @ The Parish Church – relaxed & informal
