Crab & Lobster Festival hands out grants totaling £5,000 to community groups across Cromer and Sheringham Continued from front cover...
Many of the projects which were successful will be working will local school children including Sidestrand Hall School (funding for the Life Skills Flat), Henry Blogg Museum & Cromer Museum (funding a new Nippers Club for Under 5s) and the Crazee Kidz Club (funding their Young Meets Old programme).
Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “this year’s grants help to continue the Festival’s tradition of raising money for local charities through the Annual Charity Auction and we are delighted that so many local community groups will benefit from them”.
Over the past three years the Crab & Lobster Festival has donated over £29,000 to local charities. At a time when fundraising is an uphill challenge, voluntary and community groups are more important than ever before and these grants will really help at a grassroots level.
The Festival, which recently announced details of their annual art trail for 2014, will run 16-18 May. Sponsorship opportunities are now available. Please contact the Festival via enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk

Report estimates December storm surge will cost council around £3m Repairing the damage caused by the Tidal Surge of 5/6 December will cost North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) around £3m says a report published last month.

It also stresses the importance of sound emergency planning and emphasises the resilience of the communities affected.
Initial estimates listed in the report put the total cost to the council at around £3m with, potentially, £1.6m of this being recoverable from insurers. Where possible the council will apply to the central government ‘Bellwin

With spring poised to fully launch herself upon us, it's a great time of year for the beautiful fresh fish that this coastline is rightly famous for. My pan-fried seabass is always amazingly popular but of course pan-frying is perfect for many different types of fish, including these incredibly tasty mackerel fillets.
We're doing a lot of work in the garden at the moment as we gear up for our debut season of glamping – glamorous camping – which we are hosting at the Grove for 2014 and is extremely exciting. We are working alongside Magical Camping who will be providing vintage Victorian bell tents – a throwback to the past when John and Ann Graveling used to hold many a summer camp on the field. Please get in touch with us if you fancy a glamp this summer!
And don't forget Mother's Day is coming up at the end of March!
I look forward to seeing you then, if not before. Best wishes, Charlie

More North Norfolk communities to benefit from District Council’s Big Society Fund
North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund Panel met recently to consider the latest grant applications.
The Panel awarded conditional grant funding totalling £44,186.10 to seven community projects across North Norfolk.
Successful applications include North Walsham Rugby Football Club, which was awarded £12,500 to improve club facilities for the benefit of players and spectators, as well as for the wider community to use the club for social and community events.
Antingham Village Hall Committee was awarded funding of £2,000 to install double glazed windows at the hall. This will both reduce running costs and help ensure the sustainability of this valued community facility.
A grant of £3,287.90 was awarded to Fakenham and District Light Operatic Society, which is run by volunteers and offers community theatre and entertainment in Fakenham, Wells and surrounding villages, towards the purchase of portable theatrical lighting. No longer having to hire theatrical lighting will reduce production costs and enable the Society, which particularly welcomes and supports the involvement of people with additional needs, to increase the number, type and location of its productions.
West Runton Scout Group was awarded £10,000 towards a project to extend and improve the facilities at the scout hall. This will benefit local and visiting scout groups and enable greater use of the hall by the wider community.
a business plan for the Atrium in North Walsham.
The latest awards mean that since being established in 2012 NNDC’s Big Society Fund has made 67 awards totalling £542,730.18 from the Grant Fund, along with two awards totalling £165,000 from the Enabling Fund for community projects across North Norfolk.
Wells Maltings Trust will receive £2,648.28 for an on line booking system for the Granary Theatre.
There is still funding available for the current financial year, which ends in March. Further information about the Fund, including application submission dates, is available at www.northnorfolk.org
A grant of £1,750 for fencing will enable Ashmanhaugh and Beeston Preston Room Committee to enclose the area to the front of the Preston Room, which will improve safety and enable greater use of the outside space.
Smallburgh and Dilham Bowls Club who have recently moved to a new location were awarded conditional funding of £12,000 towards the provision of a club house.
Fully insu red, regu lar or one-off clea ns
As well as the grant awards from the Big Society Fund, conditional funding has also been approved by NNDC Cabinet for projects through the Council’s Enabling Fund.

Community and Cromer Academy Art Exhibition
We are pleased to have recently celebrated our most recent exhibition held at the Garden House Gallery in Cromer. Having experienced our first major exhibition held at the Academy this time last January, we decided to join in partnership with a local gallery to give the world a little taste of the talent we have in our school.
A selection of work from all years including Green man/woman inspired portrait work and year 9 graphite observational work as well as lino prints, textile work, canvases and sculpture from year 10 and 11 were on display.
We also had the pleasure of welcoming a local artist to work with our students in the traditional skill of water colour but in a modern and expressionistic style. Keith Nash worked alongside our young artists to develop new skills and form new partnerships as students learnt a little more of how art is produced in a professional context. We would like to thank the Garden House Gallery and Keith Nash for the work they have done in supporting our young artists and look forward to preparing new artwork for next year!

National recognition for Norfolk choristers Three talented choristers from Norfolk have just gained places in the National Youth Choir (NYC) of Great Britain.
Emma Wright, an Upper Sixth student from Field Dalling who attends Gresham’s Senior School, has been offered a highly-coveted place in the National Youth Choir. Before gaining a place, Emma was a member of the Training Choir during which time she performed the Monteverdi Vespers at the Royal Albert Hall as well as singing on the NYC’s Britten Centenary CD recording. As Head Chorister and a music scholar Emma frequently takes part in school concerts and performances; and this term plays a lead role in the school's musical, Carousel. She will also play the role of Eponine in Sheringham Little Theatre's production of Les Miserables.
Mark Jones, Director of Music at Gresham’s Senior School said, “Emma has worked extremely hard on her singing over many years and this is a fantastic opportunity for her to develop further. She has been a member of the NYC Training Choir for the past year and she
fully deserves her place as a full member of the NYC. It is a tremendous achievement to have secured this place and she will gain enormously from the experience. I am sure that we will hear a lot more from Emma over the next few years.”
Charlotte Pollard, from Cromer, a Year 6 pupil at Gresham’s Prep School, has been offered a place in the NYC Junior Girls’ Choir. Charlotte is no stranger to performing, having been selected for the role of Brigitta in last year’s performance of The Sound of Music produced by Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society. She is also a member of Gresham’s Prep School Chapel Choir and has appeared and sung in a number of school performances.
Nathan Waring, Director of Music at the Prep School said, “This is a great achievement for Charlotte where she continues to demonstrate her talents as a singer in performing arts both inside and outside of school. The school is very proud of her achievements.”
Congratulations must also go to former pupil, Charlie Jefford from Oulton who has also earned a place in the NYC. He was not “SPEECH! SPEECH!” How often have you been in a situation where previously a member you have been called upon to speak in front of people – to deliver a of the Training Choir wedding speech, to give an opinion, or make a report – and quaked with nerves and fear? Whether you love public speaking or loathe it, North Norfolk Speakers Club is the place for you.
North Norfolk Speakers Club
and his selection for the main choir is, therefore, quite an achievement.
The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain meet twice a year, in the school holidays, for residential courses providing its pupils with opportunities to develop their vocal techniques across a wide range of challenging music, as well as gaining performance experiences.
North Norfolk Speakers Club offers a sociable, relaxed, friendly, constructive and supportive environment in which people can overcome the nerves and fear of public speaking. Confidence, communication skills, presentation, listening and leadership skills are all developed, whilst having fun! You may want to polish existing skills, deliver that perfect speech, or need to build confidence for that important interview, meeting or social event. Whatever you want to achieve, you will be warmly welcomed by our members. Guests may attend three meetings free of charge, and are welcome to join in or just observe. Why not come along? Find your inner voice and become the confident speaker you deserve to be.
Meetings are held on alternate Wednesdays 7pm at North Walsham High School, Spenser Avenue. For further information please email northnorfolkspeakersclub@gmail.com, visit our website nnsc.co.uk, or contact Gillian tel. 01692 650250

Crab & Lobster Festival 2014 is launched Nip along to North Norfolk this May
This May Cromer and Sheringham will unite for the fifth year running to host the ever popular Crab & Lobster Festival.
Last month the organising group proudly announced their new Festival sponsor as well as launching their plans for 2014 - and there are more opportunities than ever to get involved with the festivities.
A full and varied programme will take place across the Festival weekend 16-18 May and headlining the sponsorship of this year’s Festival is The East of England Co-operative Society.
Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are hoping to make this year's Crab & Lobster Festival the most successful yet. My committee and I are delighted that the East of England Co-operative Society are joining us as our main sponsor. With their policy of providing locally produced foods, this is a fantastic partnership.”
Nick Champion, Head of PR & Public Affairs at The East of England Co-operative Society said "The East of England Co-operative Society has been at the heart of local communities in one way or another for nearly 150 years. We believe in offering producers a fair price and consumers great tasting value so being able to support the Festival is great for us.”
"We celebrate local food in our stores every day with over 200 producers and suppliers so we know the immediate and wider economic
benefits to communities from a vibrant rural economy. Jobs, a sense of pride in our region and wonderful food on our plates all come to mind so this Festival is a fun way of celebrating something very important to how we live." The Crab & Lobster Festival will kick off the coming holiday season with a feast of fun, food, art, music, heritage and entertainment. An Opening Concert on at Cromer Pier’s Pavilion Theatre will start the Festival on Friday 16 May. Hosted by the ever-popular Olly Day the concert will feature music by the renowned Sheringham Shantymen and French Shanty group La Grosse Erreur who the Festival welcome to England especially for the Festival. This will be a show for everyone who enjoys the seaside tradition of Sea Shanties, folk and irresistible humour.
The Festival weekend continues in Cromer on Saturday 17 May and in Sheringham on Sunday 18 May. The programme of events promises a feast of superb seafood, music, comedy, film, heritage events, a scrumptious seafood trail and the return of the Festival’s art trail. The Festival weekend will also host a seafood evening, children’s entertainers, buskers, bands, surprises, sea, sand, sun (with luck)...and very much more!
In 2014 the Festival will concentrate on highlighting the local seafaring heritage of Cromer and Sheringham through live demonstrations of fishing crafts where audiences can also ‘have a go’ and crab dressing competitions as well as cookery demonstrations from local and national chefs and fish specialists.

This week the Festival launched a range of ways in which local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals can get involved with this year’s celebrations.
Central to this is the ‘Bootiful Boat Art Trail’ which will run in the same spirit as the decorated lifebuoys in 2013. For the sum of £60 sponsors will be supplied with a fibreglass boat planter to decorate and display as part of the Festival’s Art Trail which will run from Easter until August 2014. At the end of the trail all the boats will go into the Festival’s Grand Charity Auction on Sunday 24 August. The first 50 boats are now available to sponsor.
Alongside the Bootiful Boat Art Trail the Festival is encouraging local eateries to join their Scrumptious Seafood Trail. The trail, which will run from Easter to August will list local eateries which offer a Festival special seafood dish on their menus.
The Festival would like to see as many people as possible getting involved. Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are delighted to start the year on such a positive note. The Bootiful Boat Art Trail is a great way for visitors to explore the area and see what North Norfolk has to offer and it’s a great way for businesses to get creative.”
He added “In addition to all the other attractions, this year Festival will place a greater emphasis on getting more food outlets involved through our Scrumptious Seafood Trail.”
“The Scumptious Seafood Trail will mean visitors and residents can sample some of the wonderful seafood the area has to offer throughout cafes, pubs, restaurants and bistros in the local area.”
With over 40 events planned across the Festival weekend this year’s Festival will offer an abundance of fun for all the family.
Festival secretary Kate Royall said “In 2013 the Festival achieved enormous successes. Over 20,000 people enjoyed the Festival weekend and thousands more followed the art trail and we hope this year’s Festival, with an expanded programme of free events, will achieve the same success and bring more people to this fabulous area”.
For more information on the Boats, Seafood Trail, volunteering with the Festival and many other opportunities please see the website www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk or call 07775 337201.

BEGINNERS PLEASE!
The Sheringham Players present an Evening of Short Plays Showcasing New Talent ‘Beginners Please!’ is the traditional call heard backstage at theatres all over the world from the National in London to the tiniest of amateur dramatic companies held in the humble church hall.
The Sheringham Players, who are privileged to perform at Sheringham Little Theatre have heard the same call to arms for almost 50 years. However on 21 and 22 March at Sheringham Little Theatre, this call will have another meaning.
The Sheringham Players have been recruiting new members in order to keep It signals the imminent start of the play/opera/ going strong for another 50 years. The whole evening will be compéred with short introductions to each play to set the scene.
The evening kicked off with the boys modelling a range of tuxedos supplied by North Norfolk Formal Wear in Sheringham. The boys then escorted the girls down the catwalk who were all modelling a range of short and long prom dresses provided by the Maisie May wedding and prom dress boutique in North Walsham. Just Beauty and Genesis Hair Salon, both based in Cromer, worked tirelessly once again backstage with makeup and hair to ensure the girls were set for their moment in the spotlight.
Guests sipped cocktails after the show and were able to view the range of additional dresses and tuxedos on offer from Maisie May and North Norfolk Formal Wear.
The Prom Committee have met every week and have been working tirelessly since September fundraising for their Prom which is being held this year at Northrepps Cottage on Friday 4 July.

Early Bird Discount on Tickets for CHORAL WORKSHOP with COMPOSER PATRICK HAWES
To commemorate the centenary of the First World War in 2014 Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society has commissioned the internationally acclaimed composer, Patrick Hawes, to write a major new choral and o rchestral work for adult and children’s choirs and soprano soloist. This work, entitled Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell), will premiere in Norwich Cathedral on Saturday 12 July 2014 with the English Chamber Orchestra and Elin Manahan Thomas.
Prior to the premiere Patrick Hawes will present a workshop at the Auden Theatre Holt on Saturday 17 May 2014 entitled “A composer’s insight into setting words to music”. He will be sharing the creative processes involved in writing this exciting new composition and talking generally about the relationship between words and music. Patrick, who is a former Classic FM Composer-inResidence, is best known for composing the Highgrove Suite for HRH The Prince of Wales and is also an Ambassador for the Prince's
Foundation for Children and the Arts.
Central to the day’s activity will be his latest work which is based on the life of Norfolk’s First World War heroine, nurse Edith Cavell , who is buried in Norwich Cathedral, and was executed in Belgium for her part in helping hundreds of allied troops to escape occupied Europe.
A unique opportunity not to be missed, the workshop runs from 11am to 4pm and is open to all ages (under 18s go FREE) and to singers and non-singers alike.
For those who wish there will be the opportunity to work with the composer as he rehearses sections of this exciting new work with the assembled singers (no auditions necessary).
Early Bird Tickets are priced at just £15 until Friday 28 March (£20 thereafter) from Auden Theatre Box Office 01263 713444 or email boxoffice@greshams.com

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Cats come into our care for very many reasons but for every one of them it is a stressful situation (even for the most laid back cats). They come into care and are confined in our cat pens to be cared for by complete strangers. Most take a few days to settle but some can take longer - it depends on the cat. At this stage it is important that we do not put extra pressure on them by trying to force contact. Talking quietly to them while we clean their pens without making any effort to touch them will help them to gain confidence and learn to trust people. The more timid cats may need a place to hide should they feel threatened and this can be provided by a cardboard box. For some cats, visits from people coming to offer them a new home can also be challenging and they may not react positively and let people see what delightful companions they will make. Very often a cat with a lovely temperament will be overlooked for this reason although, obviously, they eventually find a new home with someone who can sense their potential as a loving pet.
The same applies when a cat goes to its new home. Again, there is a potentially stressful situation with new surroundings and, now, a much larger area to explore. Although some cats do settle in straight away it is best to assume this will not always be the case and to give the cat several weeks to adjust. We advise new owners to provide a quiet area where the cat can hide as this will help it to feel safe and secure in its new surroundings. Confining it to one room to begin with and gradually introducing other areas it will have access to, will also help it to settle. It is important not to force contact on the cat and expect it to settle and accept fuss straight away as this can make the cat feel threatened. Some cats will not eat or use their litter tray when they first arrive and this is not unusual but you do sometimes wonder how long they can “keep their legs crossed”. The cat needs time to adapt to its new surrounding (sometimes this also includes adapting to new companion animals) in a similar way as people when they start a new job, go to a new school or
join a new club. If people do have any concerns Stephanie will be only to happy to discuss how to successfully work through this period of adjustment for both owner and cat.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a Liquorice, lovely little mum description and photographs of the cats who loves to play now that her before giving us a call on the above kittens no longer need her number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Can Any Song Be Played On 4 Strings?
Not many bands feature seven musicians all playing the same instrument. But D’Ukes manage to play music ranging from Amy Whitehouse to the Zutons via Deep Purple and Beethoven all on different types of Ukulele with a hint of percussion! As D’Ukes say “If it’s a good song we will take it apart, rebuild it and uke it up” And the good news is that they are coming to Norwich! The Maddermarket Theatre to be precise on Thursday 6 March. “This will be the band’s first trip to Norwich” said John Mattock, the band’s bass ukulele player “and the show will kick off our March theatre tour” he added. The band first saw the light of day in 2009 emerging from a regular ukulele pub jam session. They have since become one of the country's top ukulele bands specialising in loud, electric, danceable music and have taken the ukulele to new levels of performance. D’Ukes perform at venues around London and the south of England at theatres, festivals, pubs, special events and private functions. They have appeared on TV and radio and in 2013 were invited to Prague to headline the first ever Czech Republic ukulele festival. Tickets for the 7.30pm show are priced at £10 and are now on sale from the Maddermarket Theatre Box Office on 01603 620917 or on-line at www.maddermarket.co.uk For more information about D’Ukes visit their website www.d-ukes.co.uk

Written by Stephanie Connor – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr It has become popular to purchase houses as ‘buy-to-let’ properties. However, before renting out property a Landlord has a number of legal obligations to satisfy, some of which are detailed below.
Landlords are required to pay tenants’ deposits into one of two available schemes: a custodial scheme where the deposit is paid into a designated account held by the scheme administrator, or an insurance backed scheme, where the landlord retains the deposit but takes out an insurance policy to protect the tenant's deposit. This is intended to safeguard deposits for the tenant and to help with the resolution of disputes arising in connection with deposits. If a Landlord does not comply with these requirements he then will lose the ability to obtain possession of the property on two months notice under Section 21 of the Housing Act 1988, and can be ordered by the Court
18
to pay back an amount equivalent to three times the deposit.
Landlords are also required to ensure that the tenants of their property are living in a safe environment and there are specific obligations relating to gas and electrical equipment, and furnishings. All furniture supplied by the Landlord must be fire resistant. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to £5000 and/or a prison sentence where death or injury to a tenant occurs. Landlords are required to have safety checks carried out on all gas equipment every twelve months. A copy of the up to date safety certificate must then be supplied to the tenant.
It is also necessary for Landlords to supply all prospective tenants with an Energy Performance Certificate, although there is no obligation on the Landlord to carry out any of the energy saving measures recommended in the certificate. The certificates are valid for 10 years. Failure to comply can result in a £200
fine through the Trading Standards Authority. There are other additional requirements for Landlords and it would be advisable to seek expert advice before letting your property.
“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”
If you require advice on this or any other legal matter please contact our Sheringham office on 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Police warning after two arrested in card scam
Senior officers are re-issuing their warning to residents to be vigilant around a credit card scam where offenders attempt to get victims to hand over their money after two men were arrested in Norfolk.
In a recent incident in Terrington, a victim had been persuaded to give their PIN number over the phone and then told that their credit cards would later be collected by a taxi.
Two men, aged 18 and 19 and from the London area, were arrested on suspicion of committing fraud by false representation and have since been released on police bail.
T/Chief Superintendent Nick Davison, Head of Norfolk's County Policing Command, gave the following warning: "We are advising residents to remain vigilant and to spread the word and raise awareness of these types of crimes, particularly amongst vulnerable and elderly people.
Residents should remember the following:
• Your bank, credit card company or the police will never ask for your PIN, bank card or bank account details over the phone – never give these details out.
• The police will never call you and ask you to withdraw money from your account to give to a courier or taxi driver, regardless of how convincing they may seem.
• If you receive such a call leave the landline for at least five minutes to make an outside call. Fraudsters will keep the line open and have been known to play ring tones, hold music and a recorded message down the phone so the victim believes they are making a call to a legitigate number.
• Use a friend’s or neighbour’s telephone instead.

• Friends, family, carers and neighbours are asked to spread the word to ensure everyone is aware of this scam and what they should do.”
Anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Cromer chippy sets standards for local industry
Park Chippy of Cromer has joined the fish frying elite from across the UK, by scooping the prestigious Fish and Chip Quality Award.
The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the trade body that represents the nation’s fish and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards within the fish and chip trade and enhancing the profile of the industry.
The scheme is a way of rewarding and promoting shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene, as well as friers who show a high level of competence.
To qualify, each shop has to go through an inspection by an NFFF Approved Assessor who assesses the shop’s presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and most importantly the quality of the cooked product.
This award sets the new benchmark for quality within the industry. It will signal to the consumer that they can buy with confidence where the award is displayed, and it will encourage more outlets to raise their standards.
Each Fish and Chip Quality Award is valid for two years and retention is dependent on standards being maintained as validated by NFFF officials and appointed assessors.

Prolific Norfolk burglars jailed for 10 years
Two burglars who travelled across Norfolk and Suffolk raiding dozens of homes stealing high quality jewellery have been sentenced to more than 10 years’ imprisonment.
Paulius Mizincevas, 24, and Romas Sereika, also 24, were sentenced at Norwich Crown Court on Thursday on 30 January for their involvement in more than 30 burglaries where property, worth in excess of £66,000, was stolen. Mizincevas’ wife and another woman charged with handling stolen property were also sentenced.
The court heard Mizincevas and Sereika, both of Prince of Wales Road, Norwich, would travel across the county targeting large detached homes during the day and night,
often forcing their way in through doors and windows before carrying out untidy searches.
The defendants would target high-value jewellery items and on many occasions would tip jewellery boxes out onto beds and steal selected pieces leaving behind low-value items.
After committing the burglaries the majority of the property was sent back to Lithuania by courier where payments were then sent back to the offenders via MoneyGram transfers.
Both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary in connection with 31 break-ins and Sereika was sentenced to six years imprisonment while Mizincevas was jailed for four-and-a-half years.
Ernesta Judickaite, 27 and of Prince of Wales Road, was charged with handling stolen goods from six burglaries worth £6,500 and was sentenced to 100 Sheringham, NR26 8TU hours of unpaid work.

Tatjana Sokolova, 21, also of Prince of Wales Road, was also given an unpaid work order for 100 hours for handling stolen property worth £300 stolen from four burglaries.
Homes were targeted
in and around Norwich including Spixworth, Thorpe St Andrew, Horsford and Costessey as well as Hethersett, Cromer, Alpington, Roydon, Reedham , Aylmerton, Blofield, Hainford, Bergh Apton, Swardeston, Swanton Morley, Frettenham, Upton, Aylsham, Downham Market, Guist, Witton, Old Buckenham and Great Barton and Eye in Suffolk.
Detective Sergeant Martin Clabon, from Norwich CID, welcomed the sentences and said they should serve as a warning to others.
"The burglaries committed by Mizincevas and Sereika were organised and executed in a well-planned manner. This is demonstrated by the fact the men used cars registered in false names to travel to them, would clearly target detached homes and used walkie talkies to communicate once inside homes.”
Detectives investigating the burglary series made a breakthrough when enquiries led officers to search a flat on Prince of Wales Road, shared by the defendants in May last year. Property was recovered from the address and later established to have been stolen from 13 burglaries.
"The group caused great inconvenience and distress to their victims, stealing valuable jewellery which often held great sentimental value to victims.
"This outcome proves that we are determined to target organised criminals and I hope this will act as a deterrent to others.” Cromer Times 439 February 15th 2014

CROMER CEMETERY (nO 2 SITE) Cromer Town Council is responsible for the maintenance of the two cemeteries on the Holt Road including the upkeep of all grassed areas, walls, paths & buildings. It is the responsibility of the next of kin to ensure that memorials are kept in good order and that mowers and machinery are not obstructed by incorrectly positioned flower containers and other tributes. With this in mind, the Council has agreed regulations to keep the burial grounds in a clean and well-ordered condition – the best mark of respect. It has been noted that an increasing number of unauthorised tributes are being placed on graves and cremation plots. A press release has been issued to remind visitors of the rules and regulations. Copies of the full press release are posted near the water stations at the cemetery. To help avoid and alleviate any distress, the Town Council would like to work together with the families concerned over the next 12 months to bring all tributes back within the cemetery guidelines. Cromer Town Council therefore ask that all unauthorised memorials and tributes are removed by 30 April 2014. Anyone wishing to discuss this further is invited to contact the town council

CROMER HOnOURS & COMMEnDATIOn AWARDS The Cromer Town Council Award Scheme to recognise significant achievement by an individual, or group, enters its 16th year. So far well over 100 people or groups have received the awards, which are presented by the Mayor of Cromer at the Annual Town Meeting. Every year one hears of work or a deed being done within our community which enhances the quality of life in our town or of its inhabitants. Much of this work by its very nature, goes largely unrecognized and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large. Who is eligible for an Award? Any person, young or old, and group or organisation, is eligible to be considered. The Council is looking towards anyone who has made a significant contribution to the quality of an individual, or wider community life in Cromer, during the last year. If you know someone, a group or organisation, who you feel should be considered for an honour, please contact the Town Council office for a nomination form which must be completed and returned to the Town Clerk by noon on 31 March 2014. Copies of the nomination form can also be downloaded from the Town Council website. COMMUnITY OPEn DAY On Saturday 12 April 2014 Cromer Town Council is hosting the Annual Community Open Day at Cromer Parish Hall. Any charities or organisations wishing to have a stall at the event are asked to contact the Town Council office to reserve a stand.

PCSimple.co.uk says “DON’T PANIC!!”
Microsoft is stopping support for Windows XP on 8th April 2014. With no more security updates after that date.
If you're one of the (30% of desktop users) many Windows XP users out there, the big question is, what happens when support stops?
Before you get too worried, it's important to understand this doesn't mean other manufacturers will do the same, so you can still update other bits of software.
If you're using Internet Explorer under Windows XP, it's time to stop. Windows XP only supports Internet Explorer 9, which means that it's at least two versions out of date and vulnerable to some exploits.
Fortunately, both Google Chrome and Firefox have been continuously updated for Windows XP, so you can download the latest version and be confident that you'll get future updates, too.
Limited accounts are a great way to use Windows XP securely as they don’t allow you to install or remove applications, or make system-wide changes. So, if you run some malware, it will be as limited as you are.
Unless there's a massive vulnerability that security software cannot protect against, Windows XP should still have a long life in front of it. As long as security software, drivers and other applications have Windows XP updates for them, the operating system can continue to be used securely and reliably.
For more advice, the staff at PCSimple.co.uk in Cooperative Street will be happy to help. Cromer Times 439 February 15th 2014
Non-surgical option for treatment of varicose veins
Coltishall Clinic is pleased to announce a treatment program for varicose veins. Endovenous laser therapy is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping.
Endovenous laser therapy is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour. Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart. Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux”) of blood back
into the foot. The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age.
Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults.
Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg.
More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually

caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg that can’t be seen at the surface.
The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear.
Endovenous laser therapy involves the insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the incompetent great or short saphenous vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy.
Coltishall Clinic also offers sclerotherapy and lasers to treat leftover spider veins.
