Miss Cromer and her Senior Attendant are selected
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
Cromer Carnival, now in its 45th year, has selected this year’s Miss Cromer and her Senior Attendant.
Trainee chef Hayley Massingham was named Miss Cromer on Friday 25 April at the annual competition. 18 year old Hayley from Cromer, who inherits the crown from Jade Armstrong, will lead the town’s annual celebrations this August.
The ever-popular Miss Cromer competition took place at The Cliftonville Hotel and saw ten entrants vying for the title, with Erin Holroyd, 17, from Aldborough chosen as the Senior Attendant.
The pair will feature heavily in the Cromer Carnival week which runs 16-22 August and will be supported by two junior attendants and a prince and princess who are yet to be selected.
Miss Massingham said “I’m shocked, I really didn’t expect it and it’s absolutely brilliant”. Senior Attendant Erin, who was the Carnival’s Junior Attendant in 2011, said “it’s amazing and I’m really looking forward to it.” Continued on page 5...

AWF supports people with learning disabilities, helping them to make friends, enjoy a social life, learn skills for work and independence, and be part of the community.
The Café, run by AWF members, will serve delicious home cooked breakfasts, lunches and cakes as well as offering a befriending service to elderly residents. The donation will go towards the Café’s set up costs including catering equipment, flooring, wi-fi, and a stock of games and activities.
Helen Dalton Hare, CEO at About with Friends said “The Community Café has allowed us to greatly increase the support on offer to the general public, as well as our members, and this donation from the Santander Foundation allows us to extend this help even further.”
Judy Thompson, Branch Manager at Santander’s Cromer branch said “The Santander Foundation makes hundreds of donations every year to good causes throughout the UK. We are delighted to be supporting About with Friends and hope the donation makes a real difference to local people.”

As well as being involved in the Carnival events, Miss Cromer, the Senior Attendant and younger ‘royals’ will visit older people in the community during carnival week.
Organiser Michelle Hedge said “We are thrilled to welcome Hayley and Erin to the carnival team, there was a great atmosphere tonight, all the girls were lovely and the venue was brilliant.”
Hayley will be crowned Miss Cromer at a ceremony on Sunday 17 August, during Carnival week.
Carnival Chairman Tony Shipp said “I would like to congratulate all the girls who entered, I’m sure Hayley and Erin will do an excellent job for the Carnival as Miss Cromer and Senior Attendant 2014.”
The competition was sponsored by Icarus Hines Butchers and Woodrows Chartered Surveyors and the entrants were judged by Jonathan Hodgetts from Woodrows, Icarus Hines, Belinda Cammell from The Cliftonville, Louise Hale from Just beauty and Steve Downes from the North Norfolk News.
Judges Icarus Hines, who has been on the panel for over ten years, said “any one of the girls who entered could have been Miss Cromer 2014 it has been one of the hardest competitions I have had to be a judge for.”

Charlie’s Classic Paella
I have very much enjoyed being part of the wonderful Crab and Lobster Festival over the weekend and serving up my beautiful seafood paella. I do think that this part of the world has so much to be proud of and it’s great whenever we can shout about the fabulous local produce that we deliver day in and day out.
Paella is of course an amazingly tasty dish to make and enjoy and it’s always good fun to serve, especially in the summer. (We had a six-foot paella dish for the festival which serves up to 250 people, so you’ll be relieved to hear that I’ve cut down the ingredients that you will need somewhat!)
We had an exceptionally busy Easter here at The Grove and we are now gearing up for the surge into the summer, with the Whitsun half-term and then Father’s Day fast approaching. Of course, my à la carte menu runs every night too so do please pop in to see us for dinner – 01263512412 to book your table.
Best wishes, Charlie

The Sheringham Players Go ‘On the Razzle’ to Celebrate Their 50th Anniversary
( 8"9&2 9 2: 2
To celebrate their Golden Anniversary (1964-2014) The Sheringham Players will stage Tom Stoppard’s masterpiece “On the Razzle”.
2
Director June Cooper – together with Julian High will direct this fabulously funny and clever play.
In 1964, June Cooper joined other enthusiastic actors to form The Sheringham Players. Since then the group has grown and strengthened. Their constant aim has always been to entertain local audiences, without whose loyal support The Sheringham Players would not have survived… so to them a big thank you!
Tom Stoppard’s farce consists of two hours of slapstick, shenanigans, mistaken identities, misdirected orders, malapropisms, double entendres and romantic complications. Set in Vienna in the 1880s and packed full of laughter, this is an unmissable production. The Sheringham Players warmly invite you to celebrate their 50 years of theatre from Wednesday 11 June to Saturday14 June at 7.30pm at Sheringham Little Theatre.
Tickets £10 (including souvenir programme) available at The Box Office, Sheringham Little Theatre Tel 01263 822347 – or see their website for more details www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

At the beginning of April, a group of members enjoyed a spring walk, stopping for coffee at Northrepps Cottage Hotel.
Mid-month, we entered the Norfolk Federation of WI’s Cator Cup competition - the theme this year was ‘A Garden’. Our entry commemorated the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of World War I, with member’s using various skills to portray a ‘Remembrance Garden’.
Helen Lloyd from Cromer Hospital spoke at our monthly evening meeting with information about the first Cromer Hospital in Louden Road, through to the larger facility constructed in Mill Road in 1932 and Remembrance Garden its demolition to make way for the new hospital, funded by the Sable Bernstein and Phyllis Cox legacies. The new hospital opened in March 2012 with its aim to treat as many local residents as possible; saving them the journey to Norwich. The hospital offers a wide range of treatments and services ranging from Dialysis to Cataracts to Minor Injuries to MRI scans etc.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 21 May, commencing with a Fish & Chip Supper, followed by discussions and voting on this year’s National Resolution, ‘Increasing Organ Donation’. Later in May we are holding a Coffee Morning, to raise funds for our group. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
The message on our answer phone asks people to phone the special number shown below if they wish for help to neuter their cat but to leave a message if they are calling for any other reason. Unfortunately, if they do call the neutering line for any other reason (and this does happen quite often) our volunteer who “mans” the phone will not be able to help them and they will need to ring the “cat” phone again and leave a message. Stephanie will respond to their enquiry as soon as she can, although we do ask people to ring again if she has not done so within 24 hours, as sometimes the message is indistinct, or the person forgets to leave their number. Working, looking after her own animals, plus the cats in the pens at her home, does mean she is not available to respond straight away, so please do give her time to get back to you before calling again.
Cats come into care for lots of reasons but it is always sad when someone has to re-home their cats because of a relationship breakdown resulting in them not being able to afford to keep them. Having to part
Romeo
with well loved members of the household for any reason is difficult but in these circumstances doubly so. Some recent additions to our pens came in for this reason, beautiful cats, with lovely temperaments and obviously well Patch, one of the new arrivals mentioned loved. One has already been offered a new home and so hopefully the others will too.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit
www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham
for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
Romeo is a one-year-old Staffie who, as his name suggests, is desperately looking for love! He could happily live with a 'Juliet', but he loves everyone and he won't mind what your name is!
He is a very loving, friendly boy who would love a home with plenty of human company, and exercise, every day please, and where he can snuggle up to you on the sofa. He is dog-friendly and could live with children aged 10+. He knows basic commands and is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
Romeo hasn't had much good luck in his life and is very distressed in kennels, poor boy, but we want to turn it around for him now and show him what a loving home is really like. Ideally we would love a permanent home for him, but we would also welcome enquiries to foster him please, until his forever home can be found. Please help this lovely young dog find happiness at last, thank you. To enquire further about Romeo and other animals, contact RSPCA Kings Lynn on 01553 618889 or email jo@westnorfolkrspca.org.uk or visit West norfolk RSPCA Rehoming Centre website www.westnorfolkrspca.org.uk

North Norfolk Artists Celebrate 20 Years of Open Studios with a Twist A group of artists living in and The artists taking part in the trail around Cromer have joined together to form an art trail with a difference, for this years’ Open Studios event.
Two new display cabinets have been donated to RNLI Cromer
The Ladies Lifeboat Guild held an afternoon tea to raise funds to celebrate their 40th Anniversary. Beryl and Bryan Mansell celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a party and asked family and friends to give donations to the RNLI instead of buying gifts.
They have decided to mark Open Studios twentieth anniversary by creating a competition that has a “twenty” theme to it. Each of the nine artists is creating a painting that relates in some way, to the number twenty. All nine paintings will initially be exhibited at The Garden House Gallery in Garden Street Cromer from 16 to 23 May and thereafter displayed at each of the artists’ studios for the duration of the event. To win at least one of the nine paintings, requires visiting one or more of the artists’ studios. The nine lucky winners will be announced on the last day of Open Studios.
are Joy Cole, Gita Dickenson, Leslie Hawkes Nockels, Robert Downie, Keith Nash, Ruth Brumby, Bob Crook, Sue Hammans and Desmond Clover.
Visitors to the Garden House Gallery on 16 May can meet the artists and join them for a drink and nibbles from 6pm - 8pm. All are welcome!
Anybody following the Cromer art trail should first look at the artists viewing hours in the official Open Studios booklet. Open Studios begins on 24 May and ends on 8 June.
For more information, please email Keith nash at info@keithnash.co.uk.
The Golden Wedding celebrations were held on the Southern Comfort boat from Horning. The happy couple invited 103 family, friends and neighbours to join them for the occasion and to help celebrate in style.
Beryl said “As the lifeboat and RNLI are very dear to our hearts we decided no presents but that donations to these two charities would be good.”
The money raised has provided a display cabinet to hold a replica of the Cromer Wartime Lifeboat HF Bailey, which served at the Pier from 1935 to 1945 and was of course Henry Bloggs lifeboat.
Shortly after the Golden Wedding the Ladies Lifeboat Guild held a 40th Anniversary tea party at the Parish Hall in Cromer which was attended by about 115 members and Committee members. A unanimous decision was made to give proceeds to RNLI Cromer to fund an additional display cabinet to hold a replica model of RNLI Lester, the station’s All Weather Lifeboat.
The cabinets are now on display in the main RNLI Cromer station at the end of the Pier.

Charity Walk and Auction for About With Friends
On 24 and 25 May one of our loyal volunteers – Nicola Lamb – will be walking 100km from Richmond Park in London to Brighton. The event is organised by Action Challenge and Nicola will be raising funds for About With Friends.
If you want to sponsor her then Nicola has a Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/ nicola-Lamb1. You can sponsor Nicola on Just Giving up to and after the event. The closing date for this is 16 June.
However, not content with sore tendons and a blister or three, Nicola and her partner Alan want to top up the sponsor money with the auction of a signed Norwich City football. This is to be sold on our facebook page by silent auction.
Donor Alan Lamb with Delia Smith after she signed the charity ball
Anyone wishing to place a bid should go to our facebook page www.facebook.com/aboutwithfriends; like the page; then message their bid to our Inbox.
The football is not a standard pre-signed ball but was purchased by Alan and Nicola and taken to the ground to be signed. Only Hopper and Hoolahan are missing from the main players but the ball has been signed by Chris Hughton and Delia Smith which makes it quite unusual. It comes in a presentation case.

Trip to Holland for kidney patients to go ahead
The planned trip to take approximately 40 kidney patients and their carers on a holiday to Holland once again this year looks certain to go ahead thanks to money raised from donations, shop collections and other fund raising efforts.
A donation of £7,500 from the British Kidney Patients Association has really boosted our funds and made a terrific difference. The Holiday which costs approximately £28,000 is really appreciated by the patients who otherwise would have little chance of a holiday. The Patients stay on a very pleasant beachside holiday complex, and are allocated houses. The site has its own dialysis unit and is convenient for the patients to be taken to see many places of interest.

The Crab & Lobster Festival is on its way! – Nip along to north Norfolk This May Cromer and Sheringham will host the fifth Crab & Lobster Festival with a host of seafaring fun for all the family.
With numerous events this year’s Festival offers plenty to do across the weekend. The Festival will begin with an Opening Concert on Friday 16 May at Cromer Pavilion Theatre with a night of seaside fun, folk and comedy. Hosted by Olly Day and featuring the Sheringham Shantymen, French shanty group La Grosse Erreur and entertainment by the fabulous Nigel ‘Boy’ Syer, it will be a night to really start the Festival in style.
The Festival weekend continues in Cromer on Saturday 17 May and in Sheringham on Sunday 18 May with a programme which promises a feast of superb seafood, scintillating entertainment, seafaring crafts, music, comedy, film, food and craft stalls, seafood competitions and a seafood Paella night.
Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “I am looking forward to another enjoyable weekend in both the towns. Each has a distinctly different venue. In Cromer Evington Lawns will host the stalls, cookery theatre, heritage marquee, food and entertainment, whilst in Sheringham these will fill the narrow streets at the seaward end of the town. I would like to welcome you all in advance to the 5th Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival.”
This year’s Festival will host a range of events centred on our fabulous local seafood and seafaring heritage. Central to this will be cookery demonstrations by local and not-solocal chefs in the cookery theatre. Audiences will be shown how to make the most of our local, scrumptious seafood across the two days. Organiser Nick Samujlik said “the demonstrations this year will be offer a mix of traditional, oriental and educational demos that will have your mouth watering and your taste buds tingling”. In Cromer this will be hosted in a marquee on Evington Lawns alongside a bar from Woodforde’s.
Accompanying the cookery theatre will be a host of demonstrations from local fishermen on the art of net braiding and pot making as well as the ever popular mobile aquarium from EIFCA. Committee member and local fisherman John Davies said “Fishing is an important part of the two towns’ heritage and visitors will be able to witness at first hand these traditional crafts and take a look at how the fishermen construct the traditional wooden crab pots as well as parlour pots.”
Throughout the weekend there will be Crab Dressing demonstrations as well as the chance to have-a-go yourself and take part in crab dressing competitions hosted by Julie Davies.
Alongside the main attractions will be an array of activities for children to enjoy and street entertainment for the whole family from Punch and Judy to Razz the Clown.
Local museums will be offering a host of events from, ‘Fishermen’s step dancing performances’ at Cromer Museum to
‘Make your own Crab Puppets’ at the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer.
On the evening of Saturday 17 May, the Festival will be hosting it’s first ever Seafood Paella evening in the Festival marquee in Cromer together with live music and a bar. This spectacular dish will be cooked in a sixfeet paella pan by The Grove, Cromer and will feature both Crab & Lobster.
The paella will be £6 per person on the night. Head chef Charlie Hodson from The Grove said “It’s been a great honour to be involved in the Festival this year and I am really looking forward to being able to contribute something special that I always enjoy cooking. Paella is the most wonderful dish when prepared and cooked traditionally, and of course the key is this fantastic seafood that we are lucky to have right on our doorstep. We are celebrating crab and lobster and of course they will be the main stars of the paella. Myself and the Grove are delighted to be playing a part in the Festival and we very much look

forward to this being the start of a great relationship.”
Events which are already up and running and which continue over the Festival weekend and into the summer months include the Seafood Trail and the Bootiful Boat Art Trail where over 70 decorative boats are located across the two towns in shop windows and outdoor spaces. Leaflets for both trails are available in local tourist information centres and at most trail locations.
Talking about the two trails Festival president Hilary Cox said “From the 6ft crabs and lobsters on the Art Trail five years ago to the deckchairs, windbreaks, lifebuoys and boats this year, I am continually amazed at the ingenuity and imaginations of the artists and the creative and tasty seafood dishes that make up the Seafood Trail. It all encourages locals and visitors alike to sample the delights of this unique area. You are not going to be disappointed this year, come along, enjoy and see what north Norfolk has to offer!”

Spring into action to save lives
nHS Blood and Transplant is asking readers not to forget hospital patients when they’re making plans to enjoy the better weather.
With more sunshine and longer days, everyone will be getting out and about more in their free time.
Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for Anglia for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We’re asking people to spring into action this Spring. This time of year is an important time to give, as stocks are often more vulnerable around public holidays, when people are busy getting out and about or going away for breaks. Giving blood now and in the next few weeks will also help boost blood stocks before people turn their attention towards England in the Football World Cup. Please don’t forget about those hospital patients who rely on blood donors to save their lives or keep them well.
“We need more than 7,000 people to attend a blood donation session every day to collect the amount of blood hospitals across England and North Wales need to treat patients. So go on, make an appointment to donate. All you need to do is visit www.blood.co.uk, find a local session and make an appointment.”
NHS Blood and Transplant needs people from all blood groups to donate, but O negative and B negative donors are particularly needed. O negative or “universal” donors can help patients with a different blood group, vital in an emergency when there may not be time for an immediate blood grouping test. B negative blood is also in demand as certain ethnic groups are more prone to certain diseases that require blood, like sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia and a higher proportion of these ethnic groups are Group B. B negative blood can be given to B negative or B positive patients.
Conditions including cancer, thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia, accidents and problems in childbirth can all lead to patients needing vital blood transfusions. Patients may need a one-off transfusion or weeks, months or even years of treatment.
In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating.
For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or contact 0300 123 23 23.
eastlaw shortlisted for prestigious award
North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) legal team, eastlaw, has made it to the finals of the National MJ Achievement Awards.
Many hundreds of councils have entered the MJ Achievement Awards 2014 and six exceptional legal teams have been whittled down as the finalists in the ‘Legal Services’ category.
The award recognises and rewards a council legal department which demonstrates exceptional value for money for the council through their contribution and innovation.
The concept of eastlaw was developed by NNDC’s legal team itself, to deliver services both in-house and on behalf of external clients. Aiming to combine the best aspects of public sector practice with the efficiency and dynamism of the private sector, eastlaw has been particularly successful in acting as the legal arm of NNDC’s drive to bring empty homes back into use, in setting up the coastshare group to help charities and other not-for-profit organisations, and in greatly exceeding the income target for its first year of operation.

Intestacy Rules
written by Adele Moore – Trainee Solicitor with Hayes + Storr Why should I make a Will? I do not have anything to leave.
This is a question most people will ask at some point in their lifetime. Often people are worth more dead than alive, in terms of life policies and pension funds falling in.
If you die without a Will the intestacy rules take effect. These are rules which are set down by law detailing who is to benefit from your estate.
If somebody dies intestate whilst married with children, they may think their entire estate will pass to their surviving spouse. However, only the first £250,000 passes to your spouse absolutely. The remainder of the estate will be divided into two parts. The first part will be a life interest for your surviving spouse and the other half will be split equally between your children when they attain the age of eighteen.
Generally, a married couple with children will wish on the first death for their entire estate to pass to their spouse and only on the second death is it to pass to the children.
If you die intestate with children and are not married or in a civil partnership, the entire estate will pass to the children in equal shares. This will include estranged children. Therefore, even if you have a child who you do not see,
they will still be entitled to an equal share in your estate.
The intestacy rules do not favour cohabiting couples. If you are not married or in a civil partnership and die intestate your partner will not be entitled to any of your estate. If you have children, again your children will benefit and you may hope they would provide for your partner but this is not always the case. If you want your partner to benefit you have to make a Will. If you do not have children your estate will pass to other family members.*
If you have made a Will you get to choose who will be responsible for the administration of the estate, your Executors. If you die intestate, your estate’s administrators are selected from the beneficiaries, who might not be individuals who would get on or are competent to do the job. If any child is under eighteen or the surviving spouse is entitled to a life interest in part of the estate, then there have to be two administrators. Sometimes circumstances are such that two, eligible potential administrators are not available.
Below is an example of a simple intestate estate: Mr & Mrs X have assets worth £1,000,000, £500,000 in Mr X’s name and £500,000 in Mrs X’s and no Will. Mr X has two children from a
previous marriage who he no longer sees. There are three children of the current marriage. Mr X dies. Mrs X would inherit £250,000 plus a life interest in £125,000. The remaining £125,000 would be split between the five children, each receiving £25,000. Mr X had not had contact with his two children for 20 years and therefore the estate had to bear the cost of locating them. This would reduce the shares the children receive and the life interest.
One of the major issues when someone dies intestate is the cost of locating beneficiaries. In the above examples, it may be easy to locate all the children. But in situations where someone dies intestate with no children and their spouse has predeceased them, the cost of tracking beneficiaries can take up a large proportion of the estate. Please see our next article ‘Intestacy rules – no immediate family’. *Please see ‘Intestacy rules – no immediate family’.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER FORECASTING THE WEATHER SEAWEED OR SCIENCE?
The weather is an enduring topic of interest to gardeners. For example, the weather in May can be particularly treacherous with frosts late in the month that are especially likely when night skies are clear - which is usually the case for most of the month - and when April has been drier than usual. Equally May can be hot and low in rainfall so gardeners need to know what to expect so they can plan when to plant tender plants and vegetables, when to water, when to apply weedkiller and how to plan their many other tasks. To help gardeners there are the professional weather reports on the radio and television of course but also many old wives tales and much folk lore which has been used over the centuries.
Meteorologists have the advantage of lots of complicated equipment, such as satellites and supercomputers to forecast the weather, however people have always used all the things around them as a guide. As well as looking
at the skies, they also used the behaviour of animals, birds and plants as clues to future weather patterns. Nowadays, people still disagree as to whether this weather lore is simply superstition or if it can in fact help in predicting the weather. However the ability of some plants and animals to respond to the many environmental indicators that can foreshadow an imminent change in weather conditions should not be dismissed out of hand.
For example it is thought that there are a number of flowers that you should look for if you want to know if it is going to rain. One of these is the Scarlet Pimpernel, which has been called the ‘poor man’s weather glass’, because the flowers open in sunny weather, but close tightly when rain is expected. Interestingly this common annual also acts as a sundial, opening its red petals at about 8am and shutting them at two in the afternoon. The petals of the Morning Glory also close when rain is expected. In coastal areas, seaweed is often used as a natural weather forecaster. Kelp shrivels and feels dry in fine weather, but swells and becomes damp if rain is in the air.
If we add in all the other observations, folk lore
RHODODENDRONS AND BLUEBELLS AT STODY
The early sunshine is bringing the Rhododendrons and bluebells at Stody out early this year. There are over 150 varieties of Rhododendron and Azalea, an impressive collection of trees, swathes of bluebells and over two acres of Water Gardens, deemed to be the largest expanse of Azalea mollis in the country.
Those in the know take advantage of the ample picnic and parking space and often bring their dogs to enjoy the delights of these 15 acres of gardens, woodland and water with their owners!
Delicious home-made teas, produced by different charities each week are a speciality, there are plants for sale and a fabulous local pub for lunch, The Hunny Bell in Hunworth 01263 712300 www.animalinns.co.uk/hunnybell-home
and superstitions which include such various clues as cows lying down, the timing of oaks and ash trees coming into flower, red sky at night and swallows flying high there seems to be no need for professional meteorologists. However at the next meeting of the Sheringham Horticultural Society members will hear from Jim Bacon, the well known weatherman about ‘Weather in the Garden’. Jim has been a meteorologist since 1968. In 1986 after working for the London Weather Centre he moved back to East Anglia to become a member of the Anglia Television weather team. This lasted until 1997 when Jim rejoined the Met. Office for a period before setting up Weatherquest, based at UEA, when the local Norwich Weather Centre was closed down.
The meeting will be held on 15 May in the Lighthouse Community Church, Sheringham commencing at 7.30 pm. Free to members with a charge of £3 for visitors. There will be a collection and all the proceeds will be donated to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB
In April we had a change of venue and, at the last minute, a change of demonstrator but that didn’t alter the fact that we had a wonderful evening.
Jean Crane demonstrated with her title being ‘A Few of My Favourite Things’. She brought her favourite containers and created designs, both traditional and modern. One design depicting a Dutch Masters painting was particularly pleasing as there were so many flowers to see.
Jean judged our competition with Best in Show Liz Crane.
Our next meeting is our 35th Anniversary Open Meeting on Wednesday 21 May at Northrepps Cottage Country Hotel. Tickets are available by telephoning 01263 579699.

WELSH STAR TO VISIT BRISTON!
The last Briston Organ How on Friday 25 April featured the amazing young organist Michael McAneny. This remarkable player thrilled the audience with a very mixed programme indeed from a medley of Scottish dance music in the style of Jimmy Shand, we had Elgar's evocative 'Nimrod', Nola, the 'Black and White Rag' that was made famous by the late Winifred Atwell, the rousing 'RAF March Past', the fast and furious 'Peanut Polka', and even the sounds of a huge concert orchestra with the 'Sleeping Beauty Waltz'. The two hours whizzed by so quickly, and the show was a great success all round, as well as making £124 from the sale of refreshments and raffle tickets which was donated to the Copeman Centre's funds, as usual. The Air Ambulance stall made £50 for their fundraising too.
The next show is on Friday 30 May when the M4 will bring us top keyboard star Ian Griffin, all the way from Wales. Ian is a very warm character, and a very accomplished musician, and his multi keyboard and pedals set-up gives him the opportunity to play all styles of music for you - so super enjoyment is guaranteed! The show starts at 7.30pm, with doors open at 7pm. The Copeman Centre is a comfortable venue, with good views and acoustics, and has wide level access for our disabled visitors too. Tickets are available now, £6 each (pre-booked) with juniors (under 16) getting in at half price - and our younger audience members will absolutely love this show!

occasional items from guest artists. “Our aim is to offer unique and original items that won’t break the bank” said Gaynor. And Nigel added “We hope to provide a gallery that reflects a coastal and country atmosphere with something to suit everyone.” Nigel’s artistic skills include acrylic and watercolour paintings and photographs. Council urges affected households and businesses to apply for assistance from flood support scheme – deadline 31 May North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has been assisting households and businesses in the district directly affected by flooding in last December’s tidal surge and storm to apply for grants from the recently announced Flood Support Scheme. The Council is urging anyone affected to get their applications in before the 31 May deadline.
The central government schemes, administered locally by NNDC, have been operating from 1 April and are intended to assist those individual households and businesses that suffered flooding to their property in December to increase their capability to withstand any future flooding.
Businesses adversely affected by the storm can also apply for funds to reimburse business losses and help with business recovery. The deadline for all applications is 31 May 2014. NNDC is doing all it can to encourage affected households and businesses to apply, and has held community advice surgeries in Wells, Walcott, Blakeney and Bacton, the areas most affected. Officers from the council’s emergency planning, housing and coastal teams dealt with 65 requests for advice and assistance with grant applications at the four events. In addition, officials from the Environment Agency were
on hand to give advice, along with suppliers of some of the products which the grants may cover.
Twenty- four completed applications have been received so far, with more expected as a result of the advice offered at the events. NNDC is hoping that people whose properties were flooded and who might not initially have considered completing an application will now do so before the deadline. Four applications have already been approved, with a combined value of more than £15,000 being awarded so far.
NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick said “It now seems a long time since the December storms and thankfully many businesses and households are well on the road to recovery. We are keen to make the application process as simple and straightforward as possible and our aim is to receive an application from every single household and business directly affected by last December’s flooding who still needs support. “ Both households and businesses affected by flooding to their property can apply for up to £5000 from the Repair and Renew Grant Fund. The aim of this grant is to build resilience against possible future flooding events, over and above repairs that would generally be covered by insurance. Measures that might be covered
In association with www.cromerdeals.co.uk
by this grant include such things as airbrick covers, demountable door and window guards, repointing external walls with water-resistant mortar and moving electrics above likely flood level.
NNDC is also running the Business Support Scheme, designed to support all small and medium sized businesses that suffered significant losses as a result of December’s storm. This grant, which is limited to £2,500 per business, aims to cover both clean-up costs and other financial impacts, such as and loss of trade, as well as the development and implementation of business recovery plans.
NNDC will also be administering a government funded scheme for business rates and council tax discount. Properties that were flooded and are classed as a person’s sole or main residence are eligible for up to six months council tax discount. For business premises which were flooded, a three month discount applies. All those known to have been affected are being notified directly with their council tax/business rates information.
Details of the schemes, guidance as to who can apply and application forms are available on the nnDC website www.northnorfolk.org

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS
REVIEW OF CONCERT HELD ON SUNDAY 27 APRIL KAUSIKAN RAJESHKUMAR - PIANO
For the last concert of the 2013/14 series, Cromer Music Evenings were successful in inviting this young pianist to return to Templewood, influenced by the exceptional artistry of his playing and who, in a short career has already been awarded many prizes, being also in great demand in the UK and abroad.
Today Kausikan’s performance of his programme made it very clear as to why it is predicted that his future career as a concert pianist will be extremely promising, in that he will be capable of fulfilling expectations in the competitive arena of his choice.
Bach’s English Suite No 5 in E minor, BMV 810 consisting of a prelude and five dances - the complex Prelude more in the style of a fugue was performed with a striking confidence, graduating into diverse interpretations of each of the five dances, ranging from brightness to the melancholy of the Sarabande, finishing with a powerful Gigue. 26

Sonata in E major, op 109 by Beethoven - written in his last years of life when he was almost deaf, the 3rd movement mirrored Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Here the beautiful Andante molto cantabile being performed with such sincere and intense musicality was awe inspiring.
Scriabin’s Sonata No 2 op 19 - iIt is said that this Russian composer converted sounds into colours which certainly produced a kaleidoscope of musical colours in both the Andante and the Presto movements, creating mystical flourishes over the whole key board, with tone gradations from pianissimo to double forte controlled and performed with ultimate passion.
Chopin’s Barcarolle op 60, Nocturne in E flat major, op 55 No 2 and Ballade No 4 in F minor, op 52 - played with such a subtle approach to each piece, especially in the Ballade which was the last Ballade Chopin wrote.
After prolonged applause this young artist played a Mazurka by Chopin which seemed to bring to an end the concert in a simplistic way, as this Polish dance, one of many by Chopin, was in complete contrast to the complex writings of Scriabin. Terry Keeler Cromer Times 445 May 10th 2014
White Horse Cheque for Nelson’s Journey is over £6,000
Members of the White Horse Charity Committee presented their last cheque to nelson’s Journey on Thursday 24th April bringing to a close five years of fund-raising for various charities.
of volunteer event organisers and the generosity of the many that have allowed us to raise such a fantastic amount for good causes and now is the right time to re-think our aims and to direct our efforts more towards the village of Overstrand, there are a number of projects and events that are just as deserving of our support and I would like to look at ways to help them and make sure that they can continue into the future for the benefit of the whole village”.
Carol Plunkett, Funding and Marketing Officer from Nelson’s Journey said “I am thrilled this is a really amazing amount of money and we are extremely grateful to the White Horse and all those who have worked so hard to raise it” she continued, “without the help of groups like this we would find it very hard to carry on with our work and it is so important that we are their for children who go through perhaps the most traumatic thing the will ever have to endure” Nelson's Journey is a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved children and young people throughout Norfolk. Based in Norwich, we were founded in 1997, since which time we have helped over 1500 children between the age of 0 to 17, who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life.

organisations, as well as money raised by our own fundraising events.
This year’s figure of £6,304.79 was the largest amount raised in the five years that the group have been going, but now after an AGM held at the White Horse have decided to call it a day. Out going chairman Nick Clariage said, “We have all enjoyed the last few years but feel it is time for a break and raising this much money for such a superb charity is a great way to finish”
The name Nelson's Journey was chosen to inspire the two main aspects of the charity we are local, hence the use of Norfolk's own Admiral Nelson, and 'Journey' was chosen as bereavement is a journey which begins the minute your loved one dies and lasts a lifetime. The work that the group began 15 years ago continues and Nelson's Journey has gone on to grow year-on-year.
The charity relies entirely dependent on donations from individuals, groups, Trusts and
'Stand By Yer Beds'
White Horse owner, Darren Walsgrove, said “Over the past five years the White Horse has raised an amazing amount of money for charities and I am delighted to say that the work is to continue into 2014 but with the emphasis very much on ‘local’. He continued, “it is testament to the real community spirit of our village and the hard work of a small band
'Stand By Yer Beds' is a light-hearted look at what it was really like to be a National Serviceman in the ’40s and ’50s, written by first time author and bandsman Dennis Cozens.
The book is chock-full (geddit?) of photos from the time and humourous cartoons drawn by the author, which brings to life the reality of National Service, the good, the bad, the mad and the sad in a very light-hearted fashion.
A nice read, available exclusively from Showcase Gallery, 40a Market Place, North Walsham 01692-500928 at just £10.

At an open meeting held at the White Horse on Tuesday 11th March over 30 residents many representing other village groups and clubs came together to discuss the formation of a new village fundraising group.
A very lively and positive discussion led to the formation of ‘Overstrand Together’. The aim to raise money to support village groups and events including the Millennium Playground by creating events that will bring village residents together in a true community spirit.
A second open meeting held at the White Horse on 10 April agreed the way forward and as part of its fund-raising efforts are planning the Overstrand Summer Fair on Saturday 2nd August to be held at the Overstrand Sports Ground. Also in the diary for the coming months is the White Horse Car Wash in Saturday 12th July and a Village Yard Sale on Sunday 13th July. Details of these and other events can be obtained from the White Horse.

Get ready for summer
- reduce excessive underarm sweating
Summer is upon us and unfortunately higher temperatures mean worsening of sweating issues for some of us. If you suffer from increased underarm sweating, worry about sweating through your clothes, work in close contact with others or in hot conditions or have to make public presentations then you may consider treatment.
What is hyperhidrosis? Hyperhidrosis means excessive sweating. It can be localised or affect the whole body. Sweat is your body’s temperature regulator. Severe underarm sweating is usually due to overactive sweat glands. In severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds the body’s normal requirements for cooling. Sometimes excessive sweating is due to other medical causes and here treatment is directed towards the underlying cause. In this case sweating is usually generalised. Generalised hyperhidrosis (affecting the whole body) can be caused by some medications, illnesses including chronic infections, some cancers and by some hormonal conditions including the menopause, diabetes and an overactive thyroid gland. Sometimes no cause can be found. Anxiety, depression and stress can trigger or worsen hyperhidrosis.
How do I know if there is underlying problem? Usually symptoms of the underlying cause are present so if you are generally healthy chances are that you have primary hyperhidrosis. Some more pointers towards this are onset in young age, involvement on both sides and cessation of sweating during sleep. Diagnosis is usually made on clinical picture but sometimes further testing is necessary.
What are the treatment options? When there is an underlying cause which can be treated, the hyperhidrosis can be cured. Surgical treatment can cure some people. Otherwise the aim is to control the condition. You can take some general measures such as daily showering, wearing loose cloths made of natural fibre and frequent change of clothing etc. Usual first line is anti-perspirants which you can buy over the counter. There are some stronger antiperspirants such as aluminium chloride hexahydrate, driclor or anhydrol Forte. Follow precautions as suggested by manufacturers. If sweating affects hands or feet there are treatment options such as medications and iontophoresis. If underarm sweating is significantly interfering with your daily activities and anti-perspirants have not worked, you may

be a candidate for Botulinum toxin type A [botox] treatment. It is a simple and highly effective treatment option which can result in dryness for up to one year or more. Lack of awareness can be a problem as we often see patients who have suffered for years with this crippling condition. They are delighted by the results from such a simple, quick and painless procedure. What about a surgical solution for longer lasting results? We offer a laser procedure under local anaesthesia to destroy the sweat glands for those wishing a longer lasting solution to this problem. ... and last of the winter season quizzes was held when Edna produced some savoury nibbles together with chocolates for the competitors during the final four rounds. She declared Sally Tipple to be the winner with Krissie Kempster, Keith Pantling, Roger Purser and Peter Bird as equal scoring Runners Up. Now to the bowls and on opening day we welcomed some six new members to the club, these were four experienced bowlers and two complete newcomers to the game. Coffee tea and cakes were available together with a raffle and it was so pleasing to see members signing on, exchanging stories of how clothing had shrunk in the wash, and starting to plan which games they would be available for during the first few weeks. There was a problem two days before the club opened when the lawn mower broke down and had to be taken away for repair. Something about the cord on the starter motor or something similar - I am not very technical - but everyone else seemed to know what it was all about. The result was that we missed cutting the green for a day or two. That didn’t really help the players on the green on opening day or the start of the morning roll ups, but all members took the problem in good heart. Couldn’t do much else really! Both the newcomers were seen on the green joining in during the morning roll ups and club members were giving advice and guidance. President Bernice can now clearly be seen when she is playing, due to the colour of her new bowls. She tells me the colour is “Indian Ocean” not green as previously reported! Trouble is they seem to confuse the bowls stickers as I definitely saw a wrong bias being bowled. Neil kept her company with one of his own. In her official position Bernice will be welcoming a team representing the Norfolk Bowls Association, Ladies Vice Presidents, to play a team from our own ladies on the afternoon of Wednesday 14th May. The first Spoon Drive was well supported even though the afternoon was somewhat overcast with a few spots of rain. Vice President Keith organised the afternoon and it was agreed that there would now be a similar Drive every Saturday afternoon when a friendly game had not been arranged. Jackie gave a boost to the morning coffee break one day by kindly bringing some oat & apples muffins to the club for the players together with a tub of assorted biscuits. That will not help the various waistlines.
As usual the morning club roll ups continue and I remind you that the free Friday evenings on the green are available for anyone who would like to come along and try out the game. Remember “Don’t Say No Before You Have Had a Go”.
And so to that list of the matches being played on the green that you may wish to come and watch, and support:
