IS JAY THE NEXT BRADLEY WIGGINS?
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
A Cromer schoolboy who has only just turned eight years old has earned a phenomenal £315 towards the Cromer Skate Park campaign by competing in major cycling events across the county.
Jay Bartlett-Massingham, a Year 3 pupil at Cromer Junior school, clocked up over 117 miles over the course of a fortnight. In addition to his usual commute to and from school, Jay competed in three major adult cycling events, earning praise from many of the other competitors along the way.
The Pedal Norfolk Cycling Festival was held on the first weekend in May, only three weeks after Jay’s eighth birthday. The event offered various rides, with courses taking in Holkham Hall and its extensive grounds, as well as great swathes of the North Norfolk countryside. Jay competed on both the Saturday and the Sunday, and between the two events gained his first ever experience of camping overnight.
Jay rode in a 25 mile event on the Saturday, and a 20 mile competition on the Sunday. He was particularly happy with his Sunday performance, as he managed to knock a massive 14 minutes 30 seconds off the NEW COMPETITION INSIDE THIS ISSUE! time he achieved last year. IS JAY THE NEXT BRADLEY WIGGINS?
Continued from front cover... Less than two weeks later, Jay was back in action at the Boudicca Sportive, which winds its way around Snetterton and South Norfolk. He participated in the 40 mile event, finishing in 3 hours and 8 minutes, ten minutes slower than his time for last year. Slower? Stuart Murtha, Jay’s stepfather and constant companion in the saddle, explains ‘Jay left his 18 year old brother more than 20 minutes behind! Had we not waited for him to catch up, I’m sure Jay would have annihilated his previous best time. Oh, and last year he only cycled the 30 mile route.’ Stuart’s obvious delight in Jay’s achievements is reinforced by the many comments the pair received from their fellow cyclists during the Boudicca event. For some five miles, the pair kept pace with a small group of men maintaining an average speed of over 20mph. ‘I can honestly say Jay received nothing but praise from any of them,’ says Stuart. ‘They queried his age, and asked: “Is this the next Bradley Wiggins in the making?” This makes me unbelievably proud of him.’ After consulting Whil De Neve, his head teacher at Cromer Primary school, Jay elected to donate his sponsorship money to the Cromer Skate Park, of which he is a long-time supporter. The campaign is now very close to achieving its target figure of £150,000, and Jay’s contribution only nudges it closer still. Jay is not sure what’s next on his cycling calendar. Somewhere down the line he plans to participate in the London to Paris bike ride. His mother Keira works for the charity OCD Action, and Jay is keen to raise money for their coffers. ‘We’re expecting a new addition to the family very shortly,’ says Stuart, ‘So that one might just have to wait until next year!

Summer series gets off to sizzling start
The summer series of Aylsham cooking demonstrations got off to a sizzling start on 3 May when local chef Derrol Waller showed off his skills in the Market Place.
Timed to coincide with the town's Farmers Markets, the demonstrations will continue through until September, each on the first Saturday of the month.
In a two-hour session promoted by Cittaslow Aylsham in association with Slow Food Aylsham, Derrol Waller produced a range dishes, including a delicious mushroom risotto, beef in a creamy sauce, asparagas soup and crepes, all with ingredients sourced in the farmers market. All the food was available for tasting by the audience who thoroughly enjoyed the show.

Cromer Times 447 June 7th 2014
What a wonderful time to be in Cromer and what a great start to the season it’s been. The Crab and Lobster Festival was superbly supported and it’s terrific to see holidaymakers heading for the beaches once again.
We’ve been very busy here at the Grove and of course my fantastic fishmonger John Davies has been flat out getting in the most amazing seafood for me. I’ve always had scallops on the menu and this is a twist on our usual presentation – but just as nice of course!
John Davies’ Queenie Scallops
3. Divide the scallops between the four shells or dishes. Add the chopped garlic to the butter and pour a tablespoon of each portion scallops, followed by a squeeze of lemon; lightly season with salt and pepper .
4. Sprinkle the smoked Dapple over the scallops, then the breadcrumbs.
5. Cook for eight minutes on the top shelf of the oven or until golden.
6. Serve with sourdough or some crusty bread.
With Father’s Day looming do be quick and book your table – at the time of writing we have a couple left but they are sure to go quickly! If you can’t get infor lunch then we are running the same menu in the evening; please give Dad a treat and bring him up to see us at the Grove. As always 01263512412 to book.

Trunchonbury – a date for your summer diary!
On the weekend of 22 August the idyllic village of Trunch in the heart of North Norfolk will come alive with the sound of Norfolk’s latest music festival, Trunchonbury.
Trunchonbury has grown from a small garden party in 2007, expanded to a private charity festival in 2009 and now for 2014 exploded into a full scale music and arts festival for the public!
The organisers aim to create the most memorable weekend our county has ever seen with two stages of live local talent, Trunchonbury Playhouse Theatre, Dance tent, Davenport’s Magic stage, healing fields, children’s activities, Buddhist tent, food stalls, craft stalls, workshops and the Trunchonbury Arms beer tent and the list expands every day.
Camping is available and all this year’s profits will be given to the Mundesley onshore lifeboat and to Trunch village.

This is not a desperate plea for members – we actually have more active members now than a year ago – but I firmly believe there are many men in the area who would enjoy the club, although for some reason they do not get in touch. By definition, I can only guess at why that is, however I must assume that I have either failed to provide enough information or the idea of ringing me is off-putting, or both. In the hope of addressing these issues, I have compiled some answers to “Frequently Unasked Questions”:
Who are you? I am the Lunch Secretary for the club and my name is Dave Vickery. I have been a member of the club since I first came to the area 4 years ago and I made contact by ringing the number which appeared in a paper, so I appreciate that potential callers will want to hear a friendly and welcoming voice. Who are the members? Men who are retired or nearly-retired from a wide range of occupations, including finance, engineering, the armed services, the law, the church, education, transport ……
What is the age range? Current members range from 56 to 90+ but there are no

prescribed limits.
What is the club’s purpose? Entirely social. It provides an environment for making and meeting friends and hearing informative and entertaining talks, mostly with local themes.
When do you meet? Lunchtime on the first Tuesday of each month, except January.
Where do you meet? The Links Hotel at West Runton.
What happens at the meetings? We chat in the bar, have lunch and then listen to a speaker. There is usually some club business to deal with but it rarely takes more than a couple of minutes.
Would anyone talk to me? You will be given a named contact for when you arrive for the first time. They will introduce you to others and be at your table for lunch.
How would I remember people’s names? Everyone has a name badge.
Is it very formal? No. Dress code is jacket and tie but there are no restrictions on who you sit with for lunch.
Can I just turn up? No. Simply because we have to notify the hotel of numbers in advance.
How much does it cost? £15 per year for membership and £15 for each meeting, including the talk and 3-course lunch plus coffee.

Have you considered joining a Probus club?
I have been writing reports on behalf of Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club for two full years. My telephone number always appears for anyone interested in joining or visiting the club but in the last year I have received absolutely no enquiries.

Who runs the club? A small committee elected from within the membership.
Is the club part of a wider organisation? No. There are Probus clubs across this country and in others, but each Probus club is completely independent and runs itself.
Are all Probus clubs the same? Not exactly, because they set their own rules, however the purpose is generally consistent. Obviously, meeting days vary so that can affect the choice of club.
Are there any activities other than the regular lunch meetings? There are occasional outings which are usually run in conjunction with another local club.
Does the club do fund-raising activities? No.
Would I have to join immediately? No. You are welcome to come along as a visitor until you make your decision.
Can members bring guests? Absolutely. This is how we get most of our new members, but they do not have to be prospective members.
Are female guests allowed? Sometimes. We traditionally invite female guests to our May meeting, the December Christmas lunch and on outings.
How do I get in touch? Ring me (Dave Vickery) on 01263 824306. Alternatively, ring the Club Secretary (Gordon Hatchett) on 01263 826881 or e-mail candsprobus@hotmail.co.uk if you prefer.

Chelsea inspired Garden Show raises £1840 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance
A Garden Show in Aylsham has raised £1840 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance with over 3000 visitors enjoying the glorious weather over the weekend at Woodgate Nursery.
Inspired by this week’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the Woodgate Nursery Garden Show showcases local companies’ gardening skills, with visitors voting for their favourite garden design.
This year’s winner was the ‘Wind in the Willows’ garden, using a mixture of wild flowers, Iris and pond plants to create a garden full of colour and interest – designed by the Woodgate Nursery team.
In second place was Sue Bell Garden Designs of Little Melton for her ‘Time for Tea’ garden which had a more modern look with paving, box hedging and a mix of Heuchera and Salvia. Followed by Mark Sapwell and his ‘Woodland
Walk’ a design of shade loving plants and native woodland trees. Kevin Myhill created a fantasy garden which proved a real attraction for the children with his hand built fairy castle complete with moat, fairies and crocodiles!
The Show attracted thousands of visitors from around the county, including budding young gardeners who took part in willow weaving demonstrations and a children’s treasure trail, while Purdy’s Tea Room served refreshments outside to visitors enjoying music from the talented Claire Lawrence.
Peter Purdy, owner of Woodgate Nursery is pleased with the success of the Garden Show “Saturday was our busiest day so far this year and I am delighted with the weekend and

80 Years Young and still Bell Ringing
On Sunday 18 May well known local Bell Ringer Derick Grey celebrated his 80th Birthday by ringing for service at his home tower, St James, Southrepps, something he has done for the last 30 years. He was given a signed card and bottle of wine by the congregation, not just for his birthday but to thank him for everything he has done for the church for many years.
Derick learnt to ring at Northrepps Church 53 years ago, being elected a member of the Norwich Diocesan Association of Bell Ringers two years later in 1963. He has rung 61 peals and several hundred quarter peals for the Association since.
Derick was a skilled carpenter by trade, working for Bullens of Cromer up to his retirement and these skills have been put to good use over the years with Derick being

Even at 80 years of age Derick continues to ring every Sunday where possible and also at the local weekday evening practices at Gimingham, Knapton, and his home tower of Southrepps, where he has been the Tower Captain since the restoration of the bells. As well as ringing for services, weddings and other special occasions, Derick has taught many local people to ring and has also spent countless hours maintaining the bells and carrying out other odd jobs in and around the Church.
On Friday evening practise at Knapton Church tower Derick was surprised with a cake and candles, nibbles and bubbly which we enjoyed before bell ringing practise.
BAFTA award winning actress returns to her old stomping ground
Gresham's School in Holt is delighted to hear that former pupil, Olivia Colman has won her third Bafta Award for best female actor in ITV’s crime series Broadchurch which was announced on Sunday 18 May. This award marks the actress’s third Bafta, after winning two TV Baftas last year for her roles in Twenty Twelve and Accused.
Norfolk-born Olivia who studied at Gresham’s recently returned to speak about her career and explain how the school’s drama department helped her discover something “she loved doing” - acting. Arguably one of Norfolk’s best exports, Olivia has become one of Britain’s biggest stars appearing alongside stars such as Meryl Streep, Ian McShane and David Tennant.

Air Cadets staff donate craft items to RAF Marham Club as a thank you for ongoing support from the base Flying Officer Brian Keerie, the Officer in Charge of 1895 (Cromer) Squadron feels he has a lot to thank RAF Marham for.
“As an Air Cadet Squadron we are assigned an RAF Base as a “Parent and from there we receive assistance with regard to equipment, uniform and other support. However when that support includes ensuring we get what we need to grow and become stronger and more effective, offer us visits and experiences beyond what would be “minimum requirements and in general bend over backwards to promote the Air Training Corps and make the Air Cadet Experience the best there is for young people then I am only too happy to return a little something if I can do.
With that in mind when Flying Officer Keerie and his wife, Sarah decided to give away thousands of pounds of craft goods they had left over from a previous business venture then offering to personnel at RAF Marham seemed the right thing to do.
Sarah Keerie explains the story. “Ten years ago I started importing craft goods to make arts and crafts photo albums (often called Scrapbooking in the states) and found there was a market in the UK for reselling unwanted items. Brian and I started to buy wholesale and sell the items on eventually setting up an online business.
of pounds worth of goods but we couldn’t decide on how to dispose of them. In the end we decided not to sell it on to another retailer or flood eBay with items at silly prices as we didn’t want to affect our friends who also have online shops so we decided giving it to a non profit group was the ideal way to go.
Whilst we were not the first or the largest we did have a great customer base and this allowed us to open two stores as well as the online store.
With this in mind Flying Officer Keerie contacted RAF Marham and eventually was put in touch with the Crafts Club there. SAC “Lol Ellison who runs the club there and Fg Off Keerie arranged a mini presentation event where some of the club received the goods. The photos below show the members of the club with Flying Officer Keerie and his cadet daughter Genevieve Keerie (13). Genny attended to show the members her mother’s own photo albums that had been made using the scrapbooking materials and suggesting ideas herself as she is a keen scrapbooker!
However as the years went by the market place for our specialised goods decreased and our child count increased so we closed one, then both stores and just kept the online presence. I now have a full time job as well as being an agent for another craft company and Norfolk Wherry Brass Race Night Brian is heavily success sets the Band off on the involved with Air Cadets which Gallop to Cheltenham Finals reduced our time and Norfolk Wherry Brass, a local Brass Band based in Neatishead, is commitment efforts delighted with the support received for our recent fundraising event so we have now organised to help the band in representing the London and Southern closed the online Counties Region at the National Brass Band Championships in September. store as well. Visitors flock to the fifth Crab & Lobster Festival
Over the weekend of the 17 & 18 May a record number of people flocked to the fifth annual Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival.
The sun shone all weekend and matched the sunny spirit of the Festival which saw people turn out in their droves to a crowded Cromer on the Saturday and into a sunny Sheringham on the Sunday.
Local businesses have reported an upsurge in trade with local B&Bs, hotels and caravan parks reporting full houses and return visits specifically for the Festival. Many local businesses have reported one of their busiest weekends of the year.
Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “it was a fantastic weekend and the weather was perfect making it a bumper festival in both towns. Each venue provides the Festival with a unique atmosphere. A family visiting the Festival and staying locally said “It is our first visit and we love it. I don’t suppose you know the dates for next year?
With a host of events, this year’s Festival offered activities and entertainment for all the family across the weekend. The Festival kicked off in style with a sell-out Opening Concert on Cromer Pier on Friday night. Compered by the fabulous Olly Day the audience were treated to finely-crafted folk music French group La Grosse Erreur, a beautiful display by Marlene’s School of Dance, comedy from Nigel ‘Boy’ Syer and the buoyant sea-side sound of The Sheringham Shantymen.
The weekend saw the Festival’s now traditional mix of superb seafood, scintillating entertainment, film, seafood competitions, traditional seafaring craft demonstrations, local food and craft stalls and the Festival’s Cookery Theatre.
This year the Cookery Theatre played host to an array of demonstrations by local and not-solocal chefs and master seafood specialists. Audiences were shown how to make the most of our local, scrumptious seafood across the two days. Organiser Nick Samujlik said “the demonstrations this year offered a mix of traditional, oriental and educational demos that got the audience’s mouths watering and their taste buds tingling. In Cromer this was hosted in a marquee on Evington Lawns alongside a bar from Woodforde’s which included the Crab & Lobster Festival ale.
Scores of people queued up to take part in the Crab Dressing Competitions hosted by Julie Davies and accompanying this there were demonstrations from local fishermen on the art of net braiding and pot making.
Children at the Festival were entertained by Punch & Judy shows, craft events and activities across local museums. Adults and children alike were fascinated by the aquarium of live
Co-op, as well as Cromer Town Council, FLAG and Blyth & Wright of Sheringham.
Photo: Andrea Yiasimi crabs and lobsters at the Festival which was hosted by the Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority.
This year the Festival hosted its first ever crab and lobster Paella evening in the Festival marquee in Cromer together with live music and a bar.
The paella, which was cooked by Head Chef at The Grove Charlie Hodson, with assistance from About with Friends and Norwich City College students, sold over 200 portions in 20 minutes. Crowds remained at the Festival marquee to enjoy music headlined by The Castaways.
Charlie from The Grove said “It’s been a great honour to be involved in the Festival this year and we very much look forward to this being the start of a great relationship.
The Festival, which has been hailed as the most successful so far, is enthusiastically looking forward to 2015 with the dates provisionally announced as 15 – 17 May 2015. As one family said of the Festival “We've come each year, we love it and this is certainly the best yet.
Chairman Tony Shipp said “I would like to thank my small but hard working committee without whom the weekend would not be possible. To those members of the Cromer Lifeboat Crew, who worked tirelessly all weekend in both towns and to all our volunteers, chefs, stallholders and visitors. I would like to thank all involved in both towns for their support and hard work, particularly our main sponsor for this year, East Of England
In association with www.cromerdeals.co.uk
Events continue until mid-August with the Seafood Trail and the Festival’s Bootiful Boat Art Trail where over 70 decorative boats are located across the two towns in shop windows and outdoor spaces. A leaflet containing both trails can be picked up at Cromer or Sheringham Tourist Information centres. The Seafood Trail has been attracting avid seafood followers since it launched at Easter.
The Festival’s World Pier Crabbing Championships will take place on Sunday 24 August 2014 when the Festival hosts its annual charity auction on Cromer Prom. Tony Shipp said “I look forward to meeting many of you again on August Bank Holiday Sunday for the World Pier Crabbing Championships and the Bootiful Boat Auction.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
It is always very sad when we take in a cat because their owner has died. Having been well loved and cared for they must find it confusing to end up in a cat pen being cared for by strangers. One such cat is George, 8 years old, ginger and fluffy, who arrived recently. Obviously well loved, he has a lovely nature but is a little bit overweight. This gorgeous lad now has his food intake monitored and controlled and his vet is very impressed with the amount of weight he has lost on his last visit. We should point out that it is important not to lose the weight too quickly as this is not good for the cat and can cause other health problems.
When George goes to a new home his new owner will be given advice as to his diet to ensure he does not put the weight on again. Although essentially a lap cat, George would also benefit from a new home where he is encouraged to play, something which will also help keep him nice and slim. We do know that George does not like dogs but he is OK with children, providing they treat him with respect, so would make an ideal addition to many households.
After a few challenges we have finally been able to arrange a date for our Hog Roast at Dilham. This year it will take place on Sunday 6th July
with our friends and fellow cat lovers arriving from noon to enjoy the day. As well as the Hog Roast there will be the usual accompaniments, plus salads, a choice of dessert and a bar for liquid refreshment. As several of our supporters are vegetarians they too are catered for. However, beware the dreaded Car Park Attendant who will once again be on duty ready to fine anyone who disobeys his rules. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event and remain at £10 each, available by either ringing 01692 535858 or emailing northwalshamcp@gmail.com. With our party tents in place we do not have to worry if it is not fine so why not come and join us at this popular event.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
New cash injections for our ambulance trust welcomed by campaigners
The Act on Ambulances campaigners have welcomed news that the East of England Ambulance Service Trust is to receive a cash injection of up to £15 million from local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) within the NHS.
North Norfolk CCG, which has the worst response times in the East of England, is set to pledge an extra £400,000.

The Act on Ambulances campaign was set up by North Norfolk Labour Party campaigners following concerns that the government was planning to cut the Trust’s budgets. These cash injections from CCGs will ensure there is investment in the 999 service.
Denise Burke, an Act on Ambulances campaigner and Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said “We welcome more investment in the ambulance service here in the East of England from the CCGs. Dr Anthony Marsh, the top boss at the ambulance trust, told residents at our public meeting last month that the service needed better funding in order to purchase up-to-date vehicles and fund more qualified staff. This is a positive move and answers some of our campaigners’ concerns. I hope the investment will show a boost in ambulance response times.”

Dear Margaret,
This year it was looking like a bumper year for wild flowers. Highways said they had listened and left the road verges alone and only started to cut the parts we need to see at junctions at the end of May. On the way to work one Friday morning I even spotted wild poppies along the Aylsham Road in North Walsham - a real pleasure to see. Sadly by home time these had all been cut down even though these were not causing any visibility problem. A complete waste of time and money, and now other areas have had the same. Even some of the high banks. Of course foot ways and park flower beds need doing, but the wild areas need to be left at this time of year. You only need to get out of the car and look over the bank or hedge to notice the lack of wildness in our countryside. For many miles the roadside is the only wild parts we have. We are told by the county council there is no money so our recycling centre will start charging or not open on weekdays, but they have plenty of money to chop wild flowers down in the summer - the very time butterflies and bees need them. It looks a mess. Why is this being done? It makes NO environmental or economic sense. Yours sincerely David G Spencer, Southrepps
Give blood and be part of the Greatest Team in the World
NHS Blood and Transplant is asking new and existing donors to give blood and be part of the Greatest Team in the World to help maintain healthy blood stocks for patients throughout the busy summer months. The number of people donating blood often falls during the summer and this year’s football World Cup may present even more of a distraction.
Jon Latham, Assistant Director for Donor Services and Marketing at NHS Blood and Transplant, said “We want to remind everybody that the need for blood will continue even when their attention turns to the beautiful game. While the overall need for blood within the NHS has been reducing, thanks to improvements in clinical practice and our work with hospitals, we still need more than 7,000 people to attend a blood donation session every day. Voluntary donors enable us to collect the amount of blood hospitals across England and North Wales need to treat patients. “So if you have an appointment coming up in June or July please keep it. And if you have time to donate, why not book an appointment to give blood and save lives? We particularly need our O Rh Negative and B Rh Negative blood donors and our platelet donors to keep attending.
“The Greatest Team in the World is never complete, so if you’ve never given blood before come and join us. We always have spaces in our squad as we continually need new donors to replace our former team members who can no longer donate for reasons such as illness or pregnancy. So come on, why not get off the bench and join the Greatest Team in the World?”
Every blood donation saves or improves the lives of up to three people, and if each member of the England World Cup squad gave blood, they would save or improve the lives of up to 69 people. In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating. For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.

Councillor Eric Seward and North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb are celebrating victory, as Greater Anglia announced that their enhanced Summer Sunday service would in future be run throughout the year.
Eric Seward said “This change will be a valuable boost for towns and villages served
by the Bittern Line. From 18 May this year, they will benefit from the enhanced summer Sunday service all year round, with six extra trains in each direction every Sunday. This will be valuable for local residents and tourists alike, and I know from speaking to residents here in North Walsham how many people support this change.”
Network Rail to agree to the timetabling changes that would facilitate the enhanced service throughout the year. After we secured this commitment a few days ago, I am delighted that Greater Anglia has responded so promptly in confirming that they will run this improved service throughout the year.”

Join us for East Anglia’s Biggest Birthday Party
East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is inviting the people of East Anglia to join them in celebrating the first birthday of HRH Prince George of Cambridge by holding a birthday party in his honour on Tuesday 22 July.
The charity, which has HRH The Duchess of Cambridge as its Royal Patron, is encouraging as many schools, groups, companies and individuals as possible to hold a Royal birthday party on or around Tuesday 22 July. Party organisers will be encouraged to invite friends and colleagues to attend parties and make a donation to EACH.
Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge, became Royal Patron of EACH in January 2012 and has provided the charity
with many great benefits including raising awareness and understanding of services, boosting the media profile and inspiring people to raise funds.
Camilla Haycock, EACH Fundraising Development Manager, said “We’re hoping as many people as possible across East Anglia will hold a birthday party on this special day, or as near to the day as they can, to help us celebrate the first birthday of the Prince. It’s a great excuse to have a bit of fun with party games and cake while raising funds for an important local charity.
“Tuesday 22 July is really near to the end of term for most schools in East Anglia and we think it would be a terrific way for children
In association with www.cromerdeals.co.uk
to have a bit of fun just before the school holidays, making party hats and playing games. Companies and organisations can also get into the party mood by holding a cake sale.
“It would be exciting to try and create some sort of record in East Anglia for the most people attending a birthday party on a day and we would love to hear from anyone who is interested in joining us.
“The birth of Prince George raised thousands of pounds for EACH with fans making donations in lieu of buying and sending gifts and we hope we can inspire people to raise funds again.”
Details about how to get involved can be found at www.each.org.uk/biggestbirthday

Here comes summer – make it DESTINATION AYLSHAM!
The Strand Club, Overstrand
Our members enjoyed a happy, varied afternoon on 14 May. We first heard about Overstrand Together, the new fundraising initiative for the village which hopefully will be well supported by everyone. There will be, amongst other things throughout the year, a village Yard Sale, when everyone wishing to sell items can pay £5 to be placed on a map. This map will then be distributed to the browsers! A summer fair will also be held.
The Strand Club are planning an outing to Sheringham Museum on 11 June which will be preceded by lunch at the Whelk Coppers Tea Room which is nearby. The museum is hosting a special exhibition of fishermen's ganseys - their oiled woollen jumpers which keep out the cold and wet. Each family had its own design so that in the old days, should there be an accident at sea, the fisherman could be identified. The usual three floors of displays will be available to see, including a tower viewpoint where hopefully the Sheringham Shoal wind farm will be visible. Explanation boards will be on show to explain the wind farm's usage. There is good disabled access, including a large lift.
After discussion of these two points, we welcomed Joyce, our retired Chair, who was applauded and who then made a public thank you for her gifts and card. We then enjoyed a ploughman's lunch, followed by a wonderful trifle made by Glo. The committee, lead by Josie, prepared, shopped for and laid out the lunches. A bring and buy sale rounded off the afternoon.
Visitors are always welcomed to our club and anyone wishing to know more either about our outing or the club as a whole should phone Glo Begley on 576539 or Chris Wood on 579433. Visitors will be charged £1.50 for a normal meeting in the Methodist Church in Overstrand which covers a raffle ticket and a cup of tea. Meetings are held every month on the second Wednesday, excluding August. 22

Council launches Health and Fitness Roadshows in primary schools North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is set to deliver an exciting programme of Health and Fitness Roadshows to primary schools across North Norfolk.
The programme aims to ensure that every child becomes more active more often and ultimately achieves life-long participation in activity. Sessions are already taking place in 14 schools across the district, where NNDC staff have been delivering hour long practical and theory sessions to help children improve their fitness, and encouraging them to share their learning with parents and carers.
Children who take part are given workbooks to complete during the five week programme. They also receive activity cards and are encouraged to complete 20 or more activities during the programme. Children who complete 20 or more activities within five weeks are rewarded with a free swim pass for use at Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham or Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre in Sheringham.
NNDC’s Deputy Leader, Rhodri Oliver said “We are delighted to be launching this programme which is specifically targeted to primary schools in the area. The sessions have been designed to encourage children to develop a positive attitude to their health and well-being from an early age and to help them learn about how their body works. We’ve already received feedback to indicate that the children taking part are really enjoying the sessions they’ve taken part in.”
Northrepps Primary School Head teacher, Mrs Angie Hamilton, said
“The children have enjoyed the activity. They started with a bleep test and were amazed at one of the boys who reached 11! They are all focussed on improving their fitness and getting healthier. Having a goal to beat is spurring them on even more. The hands-on elements of the practical sessions have been wonderful. 25 Tucker Street Cromer And especially memorable has (behind the church) been examining the Many More Bits fat content in food.”

Roughton Mill celebrates its Bi-Centenary with an open day
Roughton Mill means many things to many people and on Sunday 22nd June it celebrates its bicentenary. The current trustees and Scout leaders would like to invite anyone with a connection to, or interest in the Mill, our previous and current supporters, old and new members of the scouting movement to come and celebrate the event with us.
In 2008 Roughton Mill Scout Group launched an appeal to allow them to buy outright the Mill which raised in excess of £227,000.
The renovated tower has five floors, some of which are available for community use, and a purpose built abseiling point on the roof of the building, which is the highest permanent abseiling location in Norfolk. The Granary provides a large meeting, or conference, hall with a well-equipped kitchen, toilets and showers.
The Mill is a well-known landmark known as the home of 1st Rural Roughton Mill Scout Group. It has a history going back 1675 but the tower as seen today was probably built in 1814. On 17th September 1906 a fire destroyed the mill and attached granary building leaving just the tower shell.
The tower remained unoccupied and un-used until 1977 at which time it was owned by Brigadier and Mrs Hayward who leased the building to the Scout Association. With the help of dedicated members of the local community, grants and donations the mill was restored and a new building was erected adjoining the mill, the foundation stone was laid by the Chief Scout, Sir William Gladstone on Sunday 9th July, 1978 26
Association for future generations. The purchase has guaranteed the future of the Mill and its place as a centre for young people to experience all that scouting can offer including activities such as camping, abseiling and many other adventures.
Since 2008 the Mill has undergone further renovations due to kind donations from supporters, local businesses and grants.
Roughton Mill is a unique landmark in North Norfolk now held in trust by the Scout
The building is currently used for Scouting activities on Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday evenings during school term times, but is available for hire during the daytime, at weekends, and during school holidays. It is available for use by community groups, businesses, or private individuals, for meetings, conferences, or residential events (community groups only).

Gifts Again
Written by Miranda Marshall – Partner at Hayes + Storr
This is the third article in a series about making gifts.
After all the dire warnings in my last two articles, I would like to focus on some of the positive aspects of making gifts.
There are two popular sayings which quickly spring to mind on the subject of lifetime giving: ‘There are no pockets in shrouds.’ and ‘It is better to give with warm hands.’ No one has yet found a way to take the worldly goods with them when they die; although the Egyptian Pharaohs tried their best. The pleasure of giving is often considered to be greater than that of receiving. Benefiting from a gift sooner rather than later can alleviate financial need at the time when it is truly required. It can also allow a younger person to get their foot on the first rung of the housing ladder before it gets pulled up and forever out of reach.
There are other slightly more technical reasons than just the rosy glow of benevolence.
From an Inheritance Tax planning point of view, provided of course that the giver is left with enough to continue their standard of living and to provide for a ‘rainy day’, it is the usual mantra of ‘Give as much as you can, as soon as you can and live as long as you can.’ that applies. Generally, gifts made more than seven years before death pass to the recipient Inheritance Tax free. In handing over assets during one’s life there can also be savings in T O P P R I C E S

the cost of administering the estate following a death and it can reduce the unavoidable delays of Probate in processing an estate on death.
In some carefully assessed and planned circumstances, the need to sell assets to pay for care fees can be avoided. The assets given may, in much the same way, not be taken into account if the person has to undergo meanstesting for benefits or publicly-funded services.
Should the person making the gift lose mental capacity and no Power of Attorney (Enduring or Lasting) be in place, it can avoid the expense and delay in applying to the Court of Protection for a Court Order to manage, sell or otherwise deal with the asset.
“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”
If you require advice on this matter please contact the team at our Sheringham office on 01263 825959. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone or email law@hayes-storr.com.
Attorneys are often surprised to discover that it is usually not straight-forward and often not even possible for them to make gifts on behalf of the person who appointed them. Gifts of a ‘seasonal nature’ are permitted without Court authority but otherwise the Court’s approval to such gifts must be obtained in order for those gifts to be valid. It is difficult, expensive and slow to obtain the Court’s approval to make larger gifts on behalf of an attorney.

Summer Rep at Sheringham Little Theatre
Sheringham Little Theatre runs a packed programme of drama, film and artistic events throughout the year. While its youth outreach work continues to give new opportunities to young people throughout the area, its famous Summer Repertory programme attracts theatre-goers from all across the country.
For years, summer repertory seasons flourished throughout the UK, bringing with them the chance for villages and towns to enjoy a varied selection of performances from a small group of professional actors.
Over time the practice declined, partly due to the time and effort it takes to organise and produce an entire series of plays in-house.
However, Sheringham Little Theatre’s Summer Repertory has survived, and today it remains one of the last theatrical seasons of its type in the entire country. This ensures that it receives a great deal of interest from theatre lovers and
seasonal tourists throughout its run; the surrounding community are extremely proud that their town is able to produce something which is so loved by so many.
Traditionally, Sheringham Little Theatre’s Summer Rep has lasted 10 weeks, with each play appearing twice within the programme. However, due to programming restrictions this year each play will only run once, making it more important than ever for people to catch it before it vanishes or sells out.
We open with FUNNY ABOUT LOVE, written by THERE’S A GIRL IN MY SOUP author Terence Frisby. Packed full of laughs and emotion, it’s especially exciting that Terence Frisby himself will be directing the production.
After that, there’s the unnerving psychological thriller KISS OF DEATH, followed by a hilarious play from the master of farce himself: Ray Cooney’s CAUGHT IN THE NET.
With the energy at full speed, we hit the darkly comic NEVILLE’S ISLAND, written by CALENDER GIRLS Dramatist Tim Firth, before finishing the season with the supernaturally satirical THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP. The combination of vampires, mummies and werewolves makes this a tour de force not to be missed as just two brave actors play all the parts.
All the money earned from this season will go directly towards sustaining the theatre for another year, ensuring that it can continue to offer a great range of programming to the people of North Norfolk.
The Sheringham Players go “ON THE RAZZLE”
To celebrate their 50th anniversary The Sheringham players will stage Tom Stoppard’s masterpiece ’ON THE RAZZLE’ directed by June Cooper assisted by Julian High (both founder members of The Sheringham Players.
‘ON THE RAZZLE’ – a prime example of Tom Stoppard’s mastery of farce and language consists of two hours of slapstick, shenanigans, mistaken identities, misdirected orders, malapropisms, double entendres and romantic complications. Set in Vienna in the 1880s and packed full 28
of laughter it promises to be an unmissable production.
The Sheringham Players invites you to join in their celebration of 50 years of theatre between the 11th and 14th June at 7.30pm at Sheringham Little Theatre.
Tickets are now on sale at £10 (to include a special souvenir programme) and are selling fast. To book ring the box office at Sheringham Little Theatre on 01263 822347 or book online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com Cromer Times 447 June 7th 2014
RNLI Cromer All Weather Boat Felbrigg Hall – LESTER returns a unique volunteering experience
After nearly nine months away at RNLI Headquarters at Poole, Cromer’s main All Weather Lifeboat has returned to its home station. It was expected to be back before Christmas 2013 but flooding in the South resulted in a delay.
The Tamar Class Lifeboat, which originally arrived in Cromer in 2007, was the seventh of its class to be built and was funded by donations. Lester had been in Poole for modifications to be made to the highly technical electrical equipment on board as well as strengthening the front bow. This will enable the boat to continue its valuable work of attending any calls to emergencies at sea.
There were many people inside the boathouse at the end of the Pier as the crew and helpers also hosted an open morning at the station. Numerous photographs were taken of the return of RNLI Cromer’s boat Lester as it marked a very rare occasion of being able to see two Tamar class boats in action. The relief boat RNLI Edward and Barbara Prigmore waited until RNLI Lester was back in Cromer before she departed to Lowestoft.
John Davies, RNLI Coxswain for Cromer’s RNLI Lifeboat, said ‘It is good to have our boat back as we have missed RNLI Lester
Paul Russell, RNLI Cromer’s Head Winchman, took photographs of the historic occasion.

Felbrigg Hall, a jewel in the National Trust’s collection in Norfolk, urgently needs more volunteers to act as room guides particularly during the summer months when we open 7 days a week. Year on year visitor numbers are rising – over 100,000 last season.
As a volunteer myself I was initially worried about learning about the Hall and its history but my worries soon disappeared after shadowing an existing guide for a few sessions before taking on a room on my own. The NT provides excellent room guide folders which will help you answer any questions you might be asked and remember that you will generally know more than any visitor. However through interaction you can always learn from some of the visitors thus extending your own knowledge.
The opportunity to interact with the public and help them to have a wonderful day out is very rewarding and you can choose to work morning or afternoon shifts to suit your availability. Very soon you will feel part of the friendly team of volunteers some of whom have decades of experience at Felbrigg but always welcome new guides who will hopefully provide the next generation of volunteers.
Felbrigg offers a unique volunteering opportunity and although there is no direct financial reward you will receive a National Trust car parking sticker (useful if you want to visit other NT car parks locally), a mileage allowance which subsidises your travel costs and at the discretion of the local NT management a Volunteer membership of the NT after a qualifying number of hours worked. For younger volunteers a history of volunteering for such a well-respected organisation as the National Trust is a useful addition to your CV.

… and the fortunes of the various league teams are fluctuating to say the least. The Wednesday Hansells league team had a 5-0 win at home against Suffield Park. This was without three regulars who were away on a county bowls tour and shows the strength of the squad that Captain Graham has to choose from. However with two of those missing players back in the team the following week, away at North Walsham ’B’, the team lost 1-4. Very close games on two rinks and with a somewhat faster green to contend with it was still a disappointment. Brian who was skipping one rink was concentrating so much on the game that he forgot all about the score card in his pocket until the 18th end, out of 21, which meant details had to be copied from the opponent’s card! A good result was achieved however in the Lord Fermoy Cup. The rink at home skipped by Keith Pantling had an excellent game against tough opposition by winning 25-17. The away rink under the control of Bob Allard held their opponents to a creditable draw 13-13. The overall score saw Cromer through to the next round on Friday 6th June when the opponents will be Thorpe Recreation BC. The Federation Crabs team claimed all points in a resounding 9-0 win at home to Foulsham and followed that up with a very pleasing 7-2 win away at Lakeside BC. The Crows team is really topsy turvy. Away at Wells Elsmith they could not collect any points and came away with a 0-9 defeat. However I am sure Captain Kay must have had strong words because in the next game at home to Holt Barn Owls they totally reversed the score and claimed a 9-0 win. The NANSA afternoon team lead admirably by Captain Roger have now played 4 games and their fortunes have only had one real upset. They drew 4-4 at home to Cawston, won 6-2 at home to Sheringham Morley, then lost 0-8 away at Overstrand and away again at Mundesley won 6-2. Big Dave has decided to get a new hat. Having decided that his head was ‘medium’ with the use of his tape measure a commitment was made and that company named after a very large river is sending a new one. Various members of the club have been cutting the green for a number of weeks now, and it is not as easy as it looks. Keeping a straight line diagonally from corner to corner and then following it back in the reverse direction may sound simple, not always so. Peter H who did a grand job during his first week found that it affected his morning roll up to such an extent that we saw a wrong bias being bowled. Friendly Captain John has had an awful start to the season. The grand day out planned for the trip to CMB BC at Wisbech was cancelled at the very last moment. It was the Sunday morning of the game in fact, when the home team telephoned and said that the green was waterlogged and further rain was expected during the day. Frantic ‘phone calls to players, supporters and the coach operator had to be made. Following that another team due to visit has told us that some 3/4 players have now been hospitalised so numbers are dwindling. I hope the game still goes ahead. This is the trouble we seem to get with bowls teams with an abundance of older players. In the next two week period if our ladies have been successful against Martham BC in the Webb Trophy, and I am being very positive here, they will then be playing the next round on Thursday 12th June. And so to that list of the matches being played on the green that you may wish to come and watch, and support.
