CUP CAKES, PIMMS AND GOLF
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
Cup cakes, Pimms and golf were on offer at The Royal Cromer Golf Club on 24 June when the Rotary Club of North Norfolk held its annual charity golf day, raising funds for The Holt Youth Project with specific interest to North Norfolk Young Carers.
Twenty two, four ball teams took part and for most of the day escaped the rain. Players were treated to cupcakes made and served by the young carers and also to a glass of Pimms at the 9th hole. The competition was won by Kevin Abbs, Michael Abbs, Darren Abbs and Mark Heveran. There were numerous prizes on offer on the day with the main prize being a hole in one competition playing for a car on the 9th Par 3. Five youngsters representing the ‘ACT’ programme also carried out a competition to guess how many balloons are in a Nissan Leaf which raised over £90.

Talk about being a Good Neighbour It takes many things to make a community but a very important part of what it means to be a community is people looking out for one another and being there to give help and support when it’s needed. Being good neighbours, in short.
Neighbourliness is the social glue that bonds communities together. It helps create an environment where people feel safe and secure because they have a genuine connection with one another. However, in the modern world people are increasingly mobile. Residents move away from the places they were brought up in and new people move in to replace them. The result is that it’s increasingly difficult to have that genuine connection with one another with the consequence that some people can become isolated and feel increasingly unsafe and insecure.
To help address the issue, Good Neighbour Schemes have been successfully set up
Weather summary and forecast from Ned Nimbus
As expected, the past three months gave us weather very much in line to what we would expect. Temperatures, often tempered by a wind off the sea, were about average and rainfall, unless you caught a heavy shower, was if anything slightly below average. Pressure also held up well dampening down any major shower activity. As we leave June and enter July it looks like, for a time anyway, the weather will become less settled. However after 5 July more settled and warmer conditions should return but be prepared for Atlantic troughs and unsettled weather over the continent to threaten rain and showers now and again. August is likely to produce more in the way of rain and showers and some decidedly colder days with winds off the sea. September will see an improvement - however rain/showers cannot be ruled out but on a much lesser scale to what we will have seen in August. The forecast, as usual, carries a ± of five days. While the scope of activities Good Neighbour Schemes can undertake is very broad, typically they assist more vulnerable, disabled or frail local residents in simple ways such as by befriending them, helping with domestic tasks like mowing the garden or putting up curtains or changing light bulbs, arranging appointments, helping with shopping, or giving a lift to shops or appointments. The work of each Scheme is undertaken by local volunteers guided by a steering committee of local people.
Norfolk Rural Community Council (Norfolk RCC) is a local charity which works to help rural communities identify and address their needs. Norfolk RCC has already helped set up several Good Neighbour Schemes across the county and, thanks to funding from the County

Council’s Healthy Communities project, they can now assist with setting up a number of new Schemes.
Cromer has been identified as a community that may benefit from having a Scheme so Henry Meiklejohn from Norfolk RCC will be giving a short talk about what’s involved in Cromer Methodist Church Hall (on Hall Road) on Tuesday 22nd July 2014 starting at 7.00pm.
Good Neighbour Schemes are a great way to feel part of the community, to meet new people and to make a difference in your community, so please come along if you might like to get involved or are simply interested in finding out a bit more about it.
In the meantime, if you have any questions about Good Neighbour Schemes please contact Henry Meiklejohn at Norfolk RCC by emailing henry@norfolkrcc.org.uk or by calling 01362 698216.

YOU’VE GOT THE POWER!
By Victoria Wells – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr
Do you have a Lasting Power of Attorney? If not, why not?
If you became physically or mentally incapable of looking after your finances or making important decisions about your own health and welfare, who would you want to do these things for you? Someone you know and trust, or someone a court decides should do it?
There are two types of LPA – Property & Financial Affairs, and Health & Welfare. You can make one or both types. You can appoint one or more attorneys, and you can choose whether you want them to deal with everything, or with only certain aspects of your life.
Usefully, the Property & Financial Affairs LPA can be used while you still have your mental capacity, but are otherwise prevented from handling things yourself for a time, for example because you are in hospital or abroad. You can then take over again when things are back to normal.
The Health & Welfare LPA can only be used when you lack mental capacity to make certain decisions yourself. Obviously you could not
expect someone else to make decisions for you about matters such as medical treatment, and where you live, if you can make these decisions yourself. Importantly, there is not a “once and for all” cut off point when you are deemed to be mentally incapable, and each decision has to be looked at by itself.

If you have an old style Enduring Power of Attorney, don’t panic! As long as this was made before October 2007, it is still valid. However, there are certain additional safeguards with the Lasting Powers of Attorney, and Enduing Powers of Attorney do not give your attorneys any say in health and welfare issues, so you may wish to consider Lasting Powers of Attorney instead.

A TASTE OF THE MUSICALS The Mundesley Players are currently rehearsing for their next production, 'A Taste of The Musicals'.
After directing a very successful, sell-out, run of Les Miserables at Sheringham Little Theatre, Tracey Loftus is producing and directing 'A Taste of The Musicals' for the Mundesley Players. Tracey's love of theatre began at university, where she was involved in the production and stage management of a number of shows. Tracey has also appeared in a number of musicals including 'Me and My Girl' and 'Annie'. She has also enjoyed acting in murder mystery evenings on the North Norfolk Railway. Some of The young cast of Les Miserables have joined the Players for this show, including Zaira Palumbo, a classically trained soprano singer who was recently placed within the top eight soloists in the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod in
Wales. Zaira has been offered a place at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London where she will study her undergraduate vocal performance degree.
Anthony Loftus joins us after appearing as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. Anthony joined the Broadland Youth Choir at the age of nine and enjoyed performing in 'Joseph' with them. Anthony achieved his Grade 8 Gold Medal award from LAMDA in year 11.
Saturday 2 August at 7.30pm at The Coronation Hall, Mundesley. Tickets cost £10 and will include a buffet supper, you may also bring your own alcoholic drink.
Joe Annison, Sam Thompson, Jodie Wiggins, and Josh Hinds are also joining the Mundesley Players for this production, fresh from their roles in Les Miserables. We also welcome several members of The Broadland Youth Choir.
Tickets are now on sale at Jupe, Station Road, Mundesley, alternatively you can ring 07503 297602 and reserve your ticket.
The production runs from Tuesday 29 July to
Cromer Pier Show - Summer 2014
The Cromer Pier Show is back for its 38th summer season and I am happy that it is back to its traditional best after the not so good version of last years Summer Seaside Special and the Christmas show cut short by the terrible storms that battered the pier and promenade.
This show has something for everyone and is a fast moving and entertaining show, moving from ballet to Dame Edna “Hello Possums” sketch to Paul Eastwood a cheeky comedian who keeps the audience laughing.
Adam Daye, comedy impressionist, covered the era of Kenneth Williams, Ken Dodd, and Benny Hill in their prime brilliantly. The two headline singers, Jane Watkins and Louis Yssel, were fabulous singing everything from West End show numbers, 60s pop and operatic classics.
inspirational routines including a ballet (Bolero) and tap (Stepping Out) as well as the usual high octane show numbers supported by Marlene’s School of Dance youngsters in the West Side Story finale to the first half.
The cast is completed by the multi instrumental duo Adante which included a lively rendition of Duelling Banjos.
and hope this variety feast is repeated.

At Groveland Farm Shop the Butchery is the heart of the business
As well as being the larder for meals served in the restaurant, Groveland butchers, with the help of chef, also prepare an ever increasing array or products which are available in the deli including cooked hams, ham hock and haslets as well as pies and quiches, all cooked on site.
Groveland Farm Shop prides itself in supporting local producers and farmers, and when the beef is sourced from a Roughton Farm – they really do mean local. To improve the flavour the dry aged beef is hung for 28 days before being broken down by skilled butchers and presented for sale.
Toastmaster of the Year
Karen Battrick was presented with Toastmaster of the Year Award at North Norfolk Speakers Club on Wednesday 25 June.
‘I was both delighted and surprised to win this award,’ said Karen. ‘I joined North Norfolk Speakers Club to gain confidence and skill in speaking and giving presentations - for me a very daunting prospect - ut the members make it fun and it’s thanks to their support and guidance that I am now much more confident. I thoroughly enjoy it and recommend the club to anyone.’
Steve Taylor, who has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of the retail meat trade, together with Michael who served his apprenticeship at Groveland Farm Shop, are friendly, hard working Butchers. They are on hand to help and happy to offer advice about the cuts on display and take any special requests you may have.
For a taste of Norfolk try buying from Groveland Butchers. As well as local beef they also stock pork from Blythburgh Farms where the pigs are truly free range, allowed to roam and grow naturally ensuring the pigs are happy and enhancing the taste of the meat. Other meats also locally sourced include free range turkeys, game (when in season) and poultry.
Why not pop in and have a chat with Steve and Michael, and maybe try something new for dinner.

Why have laser hair removal?
With up to 30% off our packages, there is no reason not to!
According to the latest research in hair removal women shave 11,540 times in their lifetime and men spend 3000 hours on their shaving routine. It is no surprise then that large numbers of people are turning to a long lasting solution for unwanted hair.
Lasers can be used to remove unwanted normal hair as well as abnor-
mal hair growth, which can cause psychological problems and lower self-esteem. Treatment is very cost effective when compared to other methods of hair removal. It provides long-term hair reduction so there is no need to keep on having regular treatments. Shaving, waxing and depilatory creams are all temporary methods that must be repeated on a regular basis. These may be cheaper initially but prove costly over the long term as costs add up.
Electrolysis can be time-consuming and is usually limited to small
areas, because each hair is treated individually. Laser hair removal is non-invasive, and safely removes unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. Facial and bikini areas are usually completed in less than 10 minutes; legs and larger areas can take longer. The same area would require more than 40 hours of needle Electrolysis.
ments. We invest in training and proven technology. We have performed thousands of successful laser hair removal treatments over last many years. Our patients include medical professionals, doctors and nurses.
Contact us on 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk
Why use us for laser hair removal?
Customised treatments - we have many years experience and a range of hair removal lasers and IPL. You will be treated with the machine that would provide best results for your unique requirements.
Best lasers - with deregulation of lasers the market has been flooded with cheap devices. Some lasers have been tested by consulting room and found to be very dangerous as there is no standardization of laser output. Don't take risks of poor results, or worst still, complication which may result is more cost and time to put right. A machine is only as good as its operator. As one machine cannot be best for everyone we have invested in multiple machines.
Most experience - we have performed thousands of successful treat12

Animal Magic Supports The Cinnamon Trust
Members of Animal Magic Dog Club have been busy fundraising again, this time to provide a new, much needed market stall for The Cinnamon Trust.
The Trust is the only specialist national charity for people in their last years and their much loved, much needed companion animals. They recognise the importance of keeping owner and pet together and with a network of volunteers they provide invaluable support walking the dog for a housebound owner, fetching cat food or providing emergency pet care should the owner need hospital treatment to name but a few.
Come rain or shine, you’ll find volunteer Toni Deaves with her stall on market day around North Norfolk, raising much needed funds to allow the Trust to continue with it’s vital work in our area. A new stall was desperately needed to allow Toni to continue with her fundraising and recognising the importance of the work of the Trust, Animal Magic Dog Club stepped in to lend a helping hand.
Our Fairy Dog Mother, charity co-ordinator Zoe Hall also collected a huge amount of donated bric-a-brac for the stall so not only are they dry but they have quality items to sell too. To find out more about the work of The Cinnamon Trust, please visit their website www.cinnamon.org.uk
Animal Magic Dog Club, based near North Walsham, is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call 01263 720730 or visit our web site

Artists Return to The Gallery Norfolk
Exhibition by Local Artists
Six sought-after artists, known internationally for their work as illustrators in the world of media, express their personal love of Norfolk in an exhibition from the 12th July to the 2nd August, at The Gallery Norfolk at 3 Church Street, Cromer.
The exhibition of some 20 works – nearly all specially produced for the exhibition - follows on from the first New Views on Norfolk exhibition shown in 2013. The pictures exemplify the vibrancy, energy and eclecticism that has become The Gallery Norfolk’s trademark since it opened in summer 2012. With limited edition prints, drawings, watercolours and wood engravings (and prices starting at under £75) the exhibition offers accessible, exciting work – both originals and limited editions – by established names. All the artists have connections with Norfolk and two of them live in the county: Paul Bommer recently moved to Cromer from London, and his screen prints unite an irreverent sense of humour with a rich sense of time and place; Toby Morison, admired for his fluent, evocative drawings and watercolours, made a trailblazing career in London and New York before returning to live and work in Norfolk, where he grew up. Londoner Sarah McMenemy spent her childhood holidays in North Norfolk and all the charm and confidence of her style is captured in views along the North Norfolk coast including Cromer, Sheringham, Blakeney and Mundesley. Whitstable based Karen Radford uses nature as the starting point for her abstract prints, she often holidays in Norfolk and the Norfolk coastline has been the creative inspiration for her new prints which in the show. Julia McKenzie – based in South London, but a frequent visitor to Norfolk, where she has close friends who are also artists – creates intricate images that transform motifs from nature, sometimes combining them with elements from maps; Andy Lovell, who makes his home in land-bound Gloucestershire, but enjoys making frequent visits to Norfolk, produces evocative, subtly-hued prints that, in the artist’s words “are distilled from paintings and drawings done on location, imprinting a memory of mood, form and place”.
North Walsham Artists have an exhibition of their work at Thorpe Market Church, Church Road, Thorpe Market from 15 – 20 August, 10am - 4pm. Work by several artists will include, paintings, prints, photographs, collage, textiles, driftwood art, papier-mache bowls and sculpture. There will be a large selection of cards and refreshments will also be on sale.

Summer lemon curd tart
This month’s recipe from the kitchens of the Grove comes from Hanna Siggee, one of our chef-de-parties.
“I’ve been working at the Grove for three months now and I am absolutely loving being here. We have a lovely atmosphere, the chance to prepare and work with superb local Norfolk produce, and having the experience of being able to pick and use our own vegetables from the garden, grown by John and Ann Graveling, the second generation of owners here.
“I’m currently studying for my level 3 NVQ at Norwich City College and long-term I would love to be able to work my way up to head chef at somewhere like the Grove – that would be amazing.
“I’ve had the recipe for my lemon curd tart for around four years now. The key is getting the right balance between the sweetness and the lemon, and making sure the pastry is perfect – not too dry, not too soggy. I like to make the curd really lemony and so far it seems to have
gone down very well this summer! Please do come in and try it next time you are in town.”
SHORTCRUST PASTRY ½ pack butter ½ pack lard 500g flour 100ml water
■ Pour your flour, lard and butter into a food processor and blend for ten pulses, before setting to constant and slowly adding water until the pastry forms a ball. ■ Wrap in clingfilm and set to rest to twenty minutes. ■ Once rested roll out to 3mm thickness and mould into greased tartlet cases. ■ Using a fork poke a few holes in the bottom of the case to prevent bubbling and bake on gas mark 4 until golden brown.
■ Zest and juice your lemons, and pour with the cubed butter and the sugar into a heat-proof bowl. ■ Place over a pan of boiling water (making sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl) and whisk until the butter is melted. ■ Add the eggs and yolk and whik continuouslyuntil fully combined. ■ Cook out for ten minutes, stirring occasionally. ■ Seive the zest out and add the mix to the tart cases, then set in the fridge.
CURD 4 x large lemons 200g caster sugar 100g unsalted butter 3 x large eggs 1 x large egg yolk

Cromer RNLI volunteer received a vital £1M boost for lifesaving training A new volunteer lifeboat trainee at Cromer RNLI Lifeboat Station has had a vital part of his crew training funded by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF).
Carl Fowler from Cromer, recently travelled to the RNLI College in Poole, Dorset, earlier this month to complete the charity’s trainee crew course.
A key part of the course is the sea survival element, which enables new volunteer crew to be trained in a variety of crucial subjects including: • how to ‘abandon ship’ with a 4m jump into water
additional funding of nearly £1M brings their total support to just over £1.5M.
He also added ‘This funding is very important as it enables our crew to keep up to date with all changes to the role of a volunteer crew member of the RNLI. The training took place in the Sea Survival Centre at the RNLI College in Poole, which has to be seen to be believed. Our volunteers can expect to face all manner of conditions out at sea – sometimes the worst of what nature can throw at you. So the RNLI insists on giving them the most realistic experience of what it can be like. The centre
• team survival swimming and coping in a liferaft in simulated darkness
• how to deal with fires aboard lifeboats
• how to right a capsized inshore lifeboat
• the importance of lifejackets
Richard Leeds, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Cromer RNLI, explained that the sea survival element of the training course has been funded by the LRF, a UK registered charity that invests in science, engineering and technology for public benefit, worldwide. They are funding the sea survival element of the trainee crew course for a five year period from January 2011 to December 2015 and this
includes a powerful wave tank and a firefighting simulator, and conditions of wind, rain and total darkness can be created, allowing trainees to experience first-hand some of the scenarios they may encounter at sea as lifeboat crew.’
Talking about the training, Carl, who volunteers as a Probationary Crew Member ,
said ‘I had a fantastic time, learning how to deal with all manner of weather conditions’.
Carl who was inspired to join up as a volunteer crew member in 2013, is now ready to put his training to use. He is part of the crew who are constantly on standby ready to launch the lifeboat to any emergency.
Cromer RNLI Chairman said ‘The support given by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation is hugely important to the RNLI. We are extremely grateful that it has chosen to fund sea survival training, which teaches vital core skills to our volunteer crew. This training is central to allowing the RNLI and its volunteers to stay safe while on rescue missions. It equips volunteers with essential sea survival skills; providing them with the courage, poise and self-confidence to save lives even in the most perilous seas.’
This donation is just the latest in the LRF’s relationship with the RNLI, which was recognised in 2010 when it received the Group Supporter Award from HRH Prince Michael of Kent in recognition of its valuable support of the charity.

Local supporters take to the skies in aid of Norfolk cancer charity Over 60 Big C supporters took part in the BIG JUMP sponsored skydive event last month, raising in the region of £20,000 for Big C!
On Sunday 22 June Big C, Norfolk’s Cancer Charity held their first BIG JUMP Sponsored Skydive event that saw over 60 people take part in tandem skydives to raise money for the charity.
Around 60 jumpers decided to set aside their fears and jumped out of a plane for charity, (Big C were hoping for 50 people!), with around 400 friends and family coming along on the day to support them. After an initial safety briefing, the skydivers started to jump. There were emotional hugs and supportive smiles all round as many were jumping in memory or support of a loved one with cancer.
So far the total raised from the jump looks to be in the region of around £20,000, and sponsorship is still coming in. This will go a long way to support people affected by cancer in Norfolk and Waveney.
Big C’s Community Fundraising Manager, Diane said “It’s the first event like this we’ve done on this scale, so thank you to everyone
for their support of the jump, and great fundraising efforts. It was a really fun and happy day, a wonderful atmosphere, and so nice to see so many people come together and supporting the charity. They’ve all raised such a lot of money and we can’t be more thankful”
Kyle Hussey, age 26 from Caister-On-Sea took part in the event. He said “I was one of the first
people to jump for Big C, I absolutely loved it. The experience is something I will cherish for many years to come, the rush of the free fall and the relaxing glide back down to earth once the parachute has opened. Not only was it the most exhilarating experience but it was also for a very good cause. Without the support of BIG C to cancer patients and their families, many of them would give up. That is why I decided to sign up to the sponsored jump. Big C and the guys at UK Parachuting arranged an awesome day with live music and a friendly atmosphere with everyone routing for each other. I would most definitely do it again in the future.
Michaela Ranger also took part. She said “What an amazing experience it is to do a parachute jump, the feeling off pure elation as we sat at the edge of the plane.... Wow, what an experience.... One that I would like to repeat in the near future.... Makes it a lot more worthwhile to do it for a great charity like Big C....”
If you want to take part in a skydive for Big C, it’s still not too late! You can arrange your own skydive! Or take part in one of Big C’s other upcoming challenges including the Cambridge – Norwich Cycle ride in September. Get in touch with Big C to find out more.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
As the branch has now been in existence for 14 years we know that some of the cats originally re-homed by us are entering their “golden years”. This reminds us that older cats do have behavioural changes and special needs in their latter years. Many of us involved in the branch have older cats and recognise some of the changes you are likely to see as your cat ages. Being aware of some of the challenges your cat may face means you can take appropriate action, to make their lives more comfortable and happy.
Most cat lovers will be aware that older cats are more likely to suffer from age related disorders like diabetes, renal, thyroid, and that they can, like humans, also become less mobile because of stiffness in their joints. All these conditions are treatable as I know from personal experience with my own cats. As your cat ages, and some lifestyle changes take place, you may also need to introduce changes in their diet. Fortunately there are many foods available specifically for the older cat and also for those needing a special diet. A cat may also require help with grooming as with age their coat may become matted because they find it difficult to groom themselves. Claws also get thicker and it is important to ensure they are clipped regularly to prevent them getting too long and curl into their pads.
One other major change you may see, (and we do get calls from people who are worried about this) is the dreadful noise some cats make in the latter years. This often occurs late and night and for no apparent reason. However, if you speak to your cat to reassure it, they will usually stop. Not all cats will make this noise but it is quite distinctive when they do. For instance, Barty, one of Stephanie’s cats, now 16 years old, does but his sister Amber does not. If they do it is important when you go on holiday to let their carer know as if not aware could think the cat is in pain. Fortunately for Barty, Stephanie had told her nephew before going

Thorpe Market Churchyard Conservation
Thorpe Market Church has won numerous awards for its churchyard. This year a new maintenance schedule for the churchyard at St Margaret’s church is being established, supported by Norfolk Wildlife Trust and with the hands-on help from the Unpaid Work Unit Churchyard Management Project.
A recent survey has again declared Thorpe Market churchyard to be “One of the most botanically rich in Norfolk, with 3 of the 6 churchyard dependent species, several scarcer species and abundant attractive meadow flowers.”
The whole churchyard will be cut and raked by the unit in July and again in the autumn. After the July cut the paths and areas around the modern graves will be maintained by volunteers using machinery belonging to the church. Offers of help from parishioners to keep our churchyard beautiful by assisting with cutting the close-mown areas would be warmly appreciated. As little as two hours a fortnight during the growing season would make a big contribution to the overall appearance.
If you feel you can help us please email info@thorpemarket.org.uk.

Norman Lamb welcomes investment in new ambulances and paramedics
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has welcomed efforts to improve the local ambulance service after a briefing from service managers.
Mr Lamb visited the headquarters of East Anglian Ambulance Service (EAAST) last month. He met with control room staff and with the new Chief Executive of EAAST, Dr Anthony Marsh.
“Again and again over the last few years I have heard complaints from North Norfolk residents about slow ambulance response times. Funding for the service has increased every year under the Coalition Government and I have pressed hard for service managers to get to grips with the problem. It is good to hear that the new team at the top is prioritising investment in new ambulances and recruiting more paramedics.
Mr Lamb, who is also Care Services Minister in the coalition government, has pledged to work with service managers to ensure that the investment leads to real improvements in the service for local people.
Norman Lamb at the EAAST Control Room with Dr Marsh and Acting Assistant General Manager Brett Norton
Mr Lamb added “The local team of paramedics do a brilliant job and I believe Anthony Marsh is making real progress in rebuilding the ambulance service - and in rebuilding the confidence of both staff and the public.

Dr Marsh commented “I was very pleased that the Minister has taken the time to visit the Trust and our staff again to learn more about the improvements in the ambulance service. It was a pleasure to be able to update the Minister on our progress; the first of the 400 student paramedics we are recruiting joined the frontline this week to start treating patients, there are 147 new emergency ambulances already on the road and we are continuing to get to patients more quickly in Norfolk. We are starting to see the results of the determination of staff to succeed and provide the type of service that we all want to see. We are absolutely focused on delivering an improved service to patients and I look forward to continuing to support our staff to achieve the improvements.

Merchants' Place clock set to tick again
After three years of time standing still outside Merchants' Place, and numerous comments from residents and visitors who missed being reminded of the passing hours, enquiries were made into the cost of repairing the building's clock. An estimate of £1500 was beyond the means of this community organisation, and an appeal was begun in March 2014 to raise funds for its repair.
Now, Merchants' Place is delighted to announce that the target has been reached, and repairs are being undertaken, ahead of everyone's expectations. The appeal has received many small donations, but sufficient funds to complete the repair have been amassed largely thanks to one very generous gift.
Stanley Cable and his family spent many happy years holidaying in Cromer, and have warm memories of the town. Sadly, Stanley passed away in January this year, and after hearing about the appeal, his family wished to repair the clock in his memory. This means that the people of Cromer will have a restored working clock on Merchants' Place sooner than anticipated.
Merchants' Place wished to thank everyone who has donated to the ‘Ticking Clock' appeal, with special thanks to Mrs Cable and her family.

Overstrand Evening WI
We started our May meeting with a Fish & Chip supper followed by lively discussions on this year’s WI Resolution - to encourage members and their family and friends, to make their wishes known regarding organ donation.
Early in June we enjoyed a Coffee Morning and Open Garden, courtesy of two of our members. Thanks to their hard work, the morning raised over £90, a welcome addition to our funds. A group of members visited Pensthorpe Wildlife Park on a glorious sunny mid-June day. After lunch there was a short visit to Langham Glass with the day rounded off at Bawdeswell Garden Centre.
Keeping with tradition, our June meeting started with a walk - this year we went down the zigzag cliff path, taking a stroll along the promenade before tackling the more challenging slope back up into the village. This was followed by strawberries with cream and shortbread in the Parish Hall, kindly prepared by members who preferred not to walk, and to discuss our contribution to various forthcoming events in the village as well as a trip to Little Sheringham Theatre in August. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 16 July when Anne Shilton will talk about the ‘Experiences of a Writer’. Visitors and prospective members are welcome to our meetings which are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

REVIEW - CROMER ORCHESTRA
"Music for a Summer’s Evening" Cromer Parish Hall
The Cromer Orchestra evolved from what was the North Norfolk Youth Orchestra based at Cromer High School. Now, over a period of two years, it has 28 instrumentalists brought together and rehearsed by Norman Moor, its present conductor, who through his dedication and love of music has managed to create an orchestra which is a mixture of young players, along with the more experienced.
Playing a programme entitled "Music for a Summer’s Evening" to an audience of approximately 200 people, must have been considerably satisfying for Norman Moor, establishing his aim and hard work to present such a programme of popular music for the
inaugural performance of the orchestra.
Music by Offenbach, John Strauss, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Eric Coates, Shostakovich, Debussy, to name but a few, was well received by the enthusiastic audience.
As the evening progressed, the orchestra became more confident, especially the string section under the leadership of Michael Griffin, where, at the beginning, there were slight intonation problems.
The woodwind section produced some lovely sounds, especially in the introduction of "Send in the Clowns".
The brass section were confident from the start of the programme, almost too confident in some places, which now and then disturbed the balance of the orchestra.
Overall, the piece "Sailing By" written by Robert Binge was met with much appreciation and was played again by request as the first encore.
"Dances with Wolves" by John Barry, really needs much more practice - here the players might have been disturbed by the outside barking of dogs just before the conductor raised his baton!
At the end, after finishing the concert, the orchestra played "It’s Time to Say Goodbye" and the leader presented Norman Moor with a bouquet and a little something in appreciation of his hard work which undoubtedly made this concert possible. Terry Keeler
Annual General Meeting and Stakeholder Event
North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group Hosts Annual General Meeting and Stakeholder Event
Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (NN CCG), the organisation responsible for buying NHS care for people living in North Norfolk, will be holding its Annual General Meeting and Stakeholder Conference on Tuesday, 15 July at Pinewoods Park Leisure, Upper Sheringham, from 9am to 2pm.
Patients and those representing voluntary groups and charities are invited to attend and participate in discussions around the increasing demands around unplanned or urgent care. This is a good opportunity for local residents to have their say in how local systems could work
together to meet increasing urgent care needs in a rural location. Dr Anoop Dhesi, who will be chairing the event said “The urgent care demands placed on GP practices and accident and emergency departments, 111 and out of hours are increasing year on year which creates challenges for commissioners who are responsible for planning and purchasing local health care services. We would welcome direct feedback around these challenges and ideas to help support our local system here in North Norfolk.”
The day starts at 9.00 am with presentations followed by informal discussion groups and feedback sessions. Places are limited so please do book a place via email on nnccg.contactus@nhs.net, by telephone: 01263 738100 or by post: 1 Mill Close, Aylsham, Norfolk, N11 6LZ

Northrepps 'Poppyland' Branch Royal British Legion On Saturday 28 June we joined with our neighbouring Branch, Cromer, by taking our Branch Stand and Standard along on Armed Forces Day. This was a very successful, enjoyable day and we thank their Chairman Mr. John Needham for the invitation, and also Cromer Ladies Section for their excellent hospitality. This is an excellent opportunity for a small Branch like ours, to be able to partake in such events.
A very busy time lies ahead for us – on Saturday 26 July we will be at Northrepps Church Fete at Northrepps Hall, not only with our stand, but organising a game for children and adults to take part in, and selling the Church Bric-brac for them - this is very much

We welcome pupils of Oak Class Northrepps Primary School who will be exhibiting their portrayal of the Great War, through art, poetry and prayer, local singer/songwriter Jack Daniel who will perform a song he has written about war and conflict, and Mr. John Needham, Cromer Branch Chairman, that very well

Putting a spin on things for local cancer charity Big C
We are pleased to announce the inaugural Cozens-Hardy LLP Cycle Ride, in aid of Big C, which will take place at Blicking Estate on Sunday 20 July.
Offering three idyllic 25-mile routes, each of which starts and finishes at the stunning venue of Blickling Estate, this event has been designed to appeal to everyone.
“We wanted to create an event that was accessible to all, whether you are a family with children or an experienced cyclist wanting a new challenge,” says Partner Philippa Rudd.
The event will be run under British Cycling rules, but there will be no restriction on the type of bicycle and/or equipment on the day. Participants can also decide on the day how many loops they wish to tackle – which is key to the flexible nature
of the event, as Ms Rudd emphasises “Cycling is a great sport and anyone can get involved – you don’t have to be super fit or have the latest equipment.
We have structured our event so that it’s extremely participant-friendly, with an event village offering a wide variety of Feast on the Street food stands as well as mechanical support. If participants decide on the day that they want to do another loop, then they can, time permitting – likewise if a family rides the first loop together and the children are then tired, they can relax while either parent takes on another loop.”
Discounted entry to the Hall and grounds is offered to participants and their families and there is the opportunity to hire bicycles at the venue, so any non-participating friends and family can also enjoy the day.
Rugby hero returns to his former school
On Monday 9 June, pupils who attend a weekly summer rugby training session at Gresham’s Prep School in Holt were delighted to welcome a new coach for the evening - Tom Youngs, (Leicester Tigers, England and British and Irish Lions). Tom, a former pupil, had returned to Gresham’s Prep to run the training session for the evening, much to the boys delight.
During his visit, he ran a question and answer session, where most questions involved Manu Tuilagi. The pupils then presented him with a variety of items to sign including rugby balls, trainers, shirts and shorts. Tom spent three years at Gresham’s Prep School and represented the Rugby 1st XV, where he played in the centre, scrum half and in the second row.
The school would like to thank Tom for giving his time so generously and sharing his knowledge and experience with our young rugby players.

Hansells League results for the men are really not that impressive. Away against Reepham Nomads they lost 0-5 and at home against County Arts ‘B’ lost 1-4. And that point came from the last bowl of the game when that final rink took 4 shots to win their game. Away against local rivals Suffield Park there was also a disastrous defeat 1-4. Bearing in mind that overall the team only lost by 4 shots the loss was even more difficult to accept. Due to the scoring system had Cromer managed to get 5 extra shots and win the overall they would have won 3-2!! The Federation teams are as usual having varying results. The Crabs travelled to Sheringham Morley and played on their very well prepared green only to lose 2-7. At home against Swanton Morley however it was a complete reversal of fortunes with a 7-2 win. The Crows at home against Aylsham had one of their worst evenings of the season when they lost 0-9. Then playing away at Blakeney Rebels they did exactly the same – a 0-9 defeat. I am sure they will come back in the next few weeks.
