DRIVING ‘That there’s some cornerAUTOMATIC of aLESSONS foreign field’

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

Visiting the cemeteries of the First World War is a very moving experience and is especially poignant as we commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of war on 4 August 1914.

In the large cemeteries, such as Tyne Cot, row after row of identical headstones disappear into the distance. The headstones are deliberately uniform to demonstrate the common sacrifice made by all ranks, with no distinction between the graves of officers and men. The standard secular headstones are made of Portland stone with a curved top and straight sides. Each bears the name of the man beneath carved in a fine Roman alphabet designed by MacDonald Gill, the brother of Eric Gill. It was agreed that a regimental badge and a religious symbol – a cross or a star of David – could also be carved into the stone, together with a text if the soldier’s family so requested. Over those many thousands of graves containing an unidentified body the headstone bears the poignant description, chosen by Rudyard Kipling – ‘A Soldier of the Great War...Known to God’. The cemeteries are beautifully maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Continued on page 5...

‘That there’s some corner of a foreign field’

Continued from front cover... Although there was much disagreement at the time about the form and location of the cemeteries and memorials it was always felt that the war cemeteries should not be gloomy or sad places and the importance of horticulture was essential to the overall design. The cemeteries were intended to convey something of the character of England the dead had fought for, an ideal England full of gardens and beautiful landscapes.

If you love fashion, don’t leave Cromer without a visit! As well as the planting of evergreen trees – Ilex, Box, Bay, Cypress, Yew and Juniper – it was agreed that good use should be made of the most beautiful flowering shrubs and plants to show reverence and peace.

The great gardener, Gertrude Jekyll, prepared planting plans for four cemeteries and it can be argued that they set the pattern for all of the others and that under the influence of Sir Edwin Lutyens the British war cemeteries became ...’the modern apotheosis of the secret garden ... there is the enclosing evergreen hedge ... masses of workaday shrubs of the English countryside – blackthorn, white thorns, hazel, guilder rose and honeysuckle ... and in the soft borders where the headstones stand there are hellebores, narcissus, forget me nots, fritillaries, foxgloves, columbines, London Pride, bergenias, nepeta and floribunda roses.

the headstones rows contributes to the simplicity of the design. Lawn paths also add to the garden atmosphere and are irrigated in the dry season when there is insufficient rain. In countries where irrigation is inappropriate or impractical, dry landscaping is an ecological alternative favoured by the Commission’s horticulturalists. There are separate planting schemes for tropic climates.

When many cemeteries are concentrated within a limited area, like along the Western Front and the Gallipoli peninsula, mobile teams of gardeners operate from a local base. Elsewhere, large cemeteries have their own dedicated staff while small cemeteries are usually tended by a single gardener, often part time. There will be a lot of television coverage of the First World War in forthcoming weeks so watch out for the English gardens in the foreign fields.

Variety in height and the timing of the floral display are important Bob Wilkinson, THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER horticultural considerations and low growing plants are chosen for areas immediately in front of the headstones ensuring the CROMER FLOWER CLUB inscriptions are not obscured. David Wright, a regular demonstrator and a member of our Club, came in June to demonstrate The absence of any form of paving between ‘Famous Ladies’. As usual his arrangements were spot on with lovely flowers and foliage. He judged the competition with favourable comments and best in show was Lynne Tester. Visitors are always welcome at our meetings – telephone 01263 513408 for details.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY The Society tries to vary the programme on offer to its members and their friends and one way we do this is by organising visits to gardens of special interest.

The first such visit this summer was to Bressingham Gardens near Diss. This nationally important garden covers over ten acres and contains plants, shrubs and trees of interest to all keen gardeners. The garden is well known as a pioneer of what is known as “island planting”. Over 40 beds have been cut into a very large grassed area so that visitors are able to

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

We are really enjoying our summer and have been very busy serving the many holiday visitors who return each year to North Norfolk and our loyal local customers who support us throughout the year.

The White Horse car wash on Saturday 12th July was a great success and we are delighted to be involved with Overstrand Together and looking forward to the Summer Fair on Saturday 2 August. It promises to be a really great day with lots of village stalls, childrens games, craft stalls and arena events.

Our garden is ideal for families during the summer months plenty of room to sit and enjoy the sunshine while the children play on the bouncy castle and climbing frames and with terrace seating and garden tables it is ideal alfresco dining. We hope that you will come and suport our Village Fair and look forward to seeing you atv the White Horse very soon.

Last year they worked for 1,300,000 hours caring for terminally ill patients, including half of all cancer patients who wish to die at home.

After ending its successful first season in April, Northrepps Film Society returns with a summer special on Monday 4August with Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, which starts in Northrepps Village Hall at 7.30pm with doors opening at 7pm for refreshments (licensed bar). Chosen to tie in with a day of events occurring in the village on Sunday 3 August to mark the centenary of the start of World War One, the film has been described — in one and the same review — as “sincere”, “thoroughly moving” and a “masterpiece” yet “unashamedly manipulative” so come and decide for yourself!

8

It is followed on Thursday 4 September by The Go-Between, the classic adaptation of the L. P. Hartley novel, filmed in north Norfolk, after which the Film Society’s second season continues on the first Thursday of the month through to April 2015. Ellie’s Love update

“All 10 of us completed our skydive, the other two are jumping in August. Ellie's dad Nick loved the experience so much he wants to jump again.

It was mind blowing, breath-taking and a very emotional day. Thinking of Ellie and how proud she would be of us all.

We had a charity buffet and auction evening that night in King’s Lynn, which raised a further £1,800.”

WWI Commemoration

This year, on 4 August the country will come together to commemorate the day when 100 years ago, Great Britain entered a war with Germany that would become known as the Great War. Locally, the Parish Church of Cromer, the Royal British Legion and Cromer Town Council have been working together to mark the day accordingly.

Starting at 11am on 4 August, the public will be invited to gather at the War Memorial in the grounds of the Parish Church. There will be a service of acknowledgement to those who gave their lives from the town of Cromer. The service will be led by the Rt Revd Jonathan Meyrick, the Bishop of Lynn and the Rev Peter Herbert, Curate at Cromer Parish Church.

Local military organisations and other groups will be invited to participate and along with the public will hear the roll-call of those local men who died in World War One.

Following two minutes silence, those present will be invited to enter the Church where a candle of remembrance will be lit by Bishop Jonathan and for the following eight hours, a single guard of honour, changing each hour, will stand over the lit candle.

Later in the day at 7.30pm, a Centenary Concert will take place in the Parish Church. The Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band will be providing the music and following their appearance at the Cromer Town Council Civic and Community Carol Service last December, the internationally renowned Broadland Youth Choir will be singing a selection of songs.

Baroness Shephard of Northwold (Gillian Shepherd was MP for South West Norfolk for 18 years and was Secretary of State for Education and also Secretary of State for Employment in the 1990’s) will return to her town of birth and will be reading some wellknown poems from the World War One period.

Tickets are £5 and are available from Cromer Town Council, North Lodge, Overstrand Road, Cromer – 01263 512254. The email is admin@cromertown.org

Proceeds from the concert will go towards the War Memorial Restoration Fund which is aiming to completely repair and restore the World War One Memorial before the 100th centenary of the end of World War One in November 2018.

The concert and the day in Cromer will come to a conclusion at 10pm where it is hoped a young descendant of one of the World War One men named on the War Memorial will come forward over Fashion Accessorise the next few weeks Costume Jewellery to extinguish the Costume Jewellery Repairs & Memorial Candle. Cromer Academy Prom 2014

Students at Cromer Academy gathered together at Northrepps Cottage on Friday 4 July to celebrate the end of their school life. They were greeted upon their arrival with drinks on the lawn before enjoying a sumptuous meal.

The prom committee met weekly during the year to organise fundraising events and finalise ideas to make this the best prom ever. They raised over £800 which went towards an hiring a popcorn and candy floss maker for the evening providing them with an unlimited supply, a photo booth, table favours for the boys and girls, decorations and reducing the cost of the all the students ticket for the event.

A group of Cromer Academy year 11 students,

consisting of Jack Blair, Kieron Cooper, Tim Bending and Luke Durrant who play in a band called ‘Gentlemen’, played a set for their cohort during the evening and ensured the dance floor was never empty during the night. A montage of photos taken during their time at Cromer Academy was shown throughout the evening on a large screen. Prizes were awarded to Best Arrivals which went

to Phoebe Gee and Roisin Finnegan for their homemade Bat Mobile, Tilly Hadfield for her escorted arrival with Buzz and

Woody from Toy Story and Casey Scarff for her rather dramatic arrival on the back of motorcycle escorted by a dozen motorcyclists! Best Dressed Girl was awarded to Elise Jarvis and Best Dressed Boy was awarded to Max Bumphrey.

The beautiful weather and setting also helped to ensure the students had a night to remember!

Downton Comes to Mackenzie Hotels

Earlier this month the Dales Country House Hotel was paid a visit by a little piece of Downton Abbey with the arrival of 30 vintage Crossley cars.

Built from 1904 until 1937 by the Crossley Brothers in Manchester, these cars were widely used by the Royal Family on tours to the Commonwealth and there is said to be as many cars here in the UK as there are in Australia and South Africa.

engine & pre-select gear box (this car was entered into the RAC Rally). Also the Crossley 20/70 built in 1922, sold with a guarantee to do 75 mph on Brooklands Track and registration EE4255 being the sole survivor of this model and 20.9 being again the only one of its kind left with a 3.2 litre engine and road tested in 1930 with a top speed of 71 mph.

The Climax and Regis were later models. The Regis sports saloon, manufactured in 1936 and boasting a six cylinder engine, was the last car to be produced before the Crossley brothers concentrated their efforts on manufacturing war machinery.

The Crossley Register owners’ club are a regular visitor to Mackenzie Hotels having stayed at the Sea Marge on their last annual car rally. The Register has been running for over 25 years with over 140 members and offers a fantastic opportunity for fellow owners to meet up, swap notes and share (with dinner on production of this edition. Booking essential) stories as well as being a great way of helping preserve these fantastic vintage cars.

Despite the unsettled weather the rally was a great success stopping at Holkham Hall, Felbrigg Hall, Houghton Hall and many small villages along the way.

On the Sunday the cars took to the road to take part in a treasure hunt. It was a great occasion with the cars and the Grade 2 listed building of the Dales Country Park Hotel complementing one another perfectly. ww.mackenziehotels.com

Enjoy a glass of Prosecco on us!

The Dales Country House Hotel played host to many fantastic Crossley vintage cars including the Crossley 14, built with either a 19.6 or 20.9 HP engine, the Crossley Shelley built in 1913 and, being the oldest on the rally, the Torquay with its four cylinder Coventry Class

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although we spend considerable sums of money each year helping people with the cost of neutering their cats, once again the “kitten season” has now well and truly arrived. At present we have several litters in care of varying ages. Some ready to leave immediately, while some barely have their eyes open, are being hand reared and will be with us for several more weeks. One little mum, barely more than a kitten herself came into care heavily pregnant, having been handed over to us by a concerned member of the public who knew she had been abandoned by her previous owners when they moved. Two more young mums came into care with their kittens, again having been abandoned by their owners and left to fend for themselves. One of these had been living in someone’s garden for a few months and was very nervous when

My Cat has arthritis, but lives life to the full – by Gill Carrick

It’s fairly common knowledge that dogs, like humans, can develop arthritis, particularly as they age. What isn’t so well known is that most cats over eight have the condition too, often suffering in silence – but no longer.

My Cat has arthritis, but lives life to the full, gives our feline friends a voice for the first time.

Written by Gill Carrick, a Cromerbased writer and author, this owners’ guide is packed with expert advice, moving case studies and glorious colour photos, celebrating cats living their nine lives to the max.

she arrived. She has now learnt to trust us and is starting to enjoy being a cat again.

Other kittens have joined us from feral colonies and although the older ones have needed extra handling to ensure they are fully socialised, all are responding well. The mother of four of New arrival Badger, just the kittens has also been neutered and 10 weeks old when he came blood tested for FIV and FELV so we into care know these kittens are nice and healthy. Three other kittens were caught one evening and spent the night in my bathroom before going on to their fosterer to be bottle fed - they were only about two weeks old at the time. We managed to re-home a mum and her four kittens from the same colony last year and will be returning shortly to trap and neuter the remaining cats, all of which are beautiful but sadly not easy to handle. As the number of cats the lady is feeding has gone up from three last year to nine currently, it is important that we get the remaining cats neutered sooner rather than later. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Cromer Artist - Samuel Thomas Makes Norfolk Pop-Art Popular

The Cromer-based artist celebrates the traditional coastal scenes of Norfolk in his own radically unique painting style.

Samuel is only 27, and he has already created a name for himself as a Norfolk artist with a difference. His distinctive and colourful painting-style has struck a chord with a wide range of people, significantly from a new generation of art buyers.

Samuel’s exhibitions have been growing, having now exhibited in seven counties in the UK, and he ships work to buyers as far as the USA. He has been published in numerous art publications yet Cromer in Norfolk still remains his home. ‘Norfolk and Cromer in

particular have been good to me, the place has given me the inspiration for many of my paintings.’

‘My art offers sunnier visions of the world, even on the darkest and moodiest days we may find ourselves,’ he explains, ‘and I feel that’s why many people fall in love with it - it’s the pursuit of escapism – the same reason as why people holiday here in Norfolk’. There is often a sense of romance and nostalgia within them, similar to the iconic 1920 ‘Come to the Seaside’ rail posters that helped establish the tourist boom in Norfolk.

Samuel put his talent to good use in October 2013 when he helped

Council leads by example on apprenticeship scheme two apprentices in north norfolk District Council’s (nnDC) Council tax section have been rewarded for their efforts by being granted full time posts with the team.

Brianne Neale and Kristian Cubitt both started an apprenticeship with NNDC in July 2013. The government-supported scheme aimed to provide them with an NVQ level 2 and Technical Certificate in Business Administration from Easton and Otley College as well as providing mentoring and experience in the work-place.

Both are now reaching the end of their training and qualification and in recognition of how successful they have been, both have been offered full-time positions within the councilbased team - Kristian as a permanent Revenue Officer, while Brianne has accepted a fixed term contract to March 2015.

Brianne, 18, from Sheringham, decided A’ levels were not for her as she was looking for a qualification that was much more closely related to the work-place.

“I’ve friends who have got degrees and are now struggling to find a job, she said. “What really attracted me to this apprenticeship was that it provided practical experience alongside a qualification, and I thought that it would really help me to build my confidence in a working environment. I have really enjoyed it; the people here are great and I’m delighted I can stay on

“After a few years I realised that I wasn’t going anywhere as far as work was concerned, and I wanted to do something about that, he said. “This apprenticeship offered me both an opportunity to develop my skills and a real chance to build a proper career. That gave me the motivation that I needed to work hard and I’m really pleased it has worked out with a real job at the end of it. I’m now looking forward to building my skills and experience further, and to seeing just how far I can go!

Overstrand -The Strand Club Our annual outing took place on 11 June and proved to be a glorious sunny and warm day.

Members and their guests met at the Coppers Whelk cafe in Sheringham, situated on the promenade. We all enjoyed a light lunch in our own allocated private dining area which had thoughtfully been pre-organised by Glo. We re-grouped outside the Museum at 2pm and were greeted by Philip the museum manager. He then gave us a brief introduction to the history of the building which was leased from Anglian Water and informed us with some humour that we were in fact standing above Sheringham's main sewage collection, prior to it being pumped along to Cromer outfall. We learnt the purpose of the huge display of knitted ganseys and some of the history of the restored fishing boats on the ground floor.

The remainder of the afternoon was spent wandering around the exhibits, taking in the history of life past with the local fishing community and viewing shop replicas of the early 20th century. The wind farm exhibits on the upper floor were fascinating and informative and those who made the effort to scale the stairs to this floor were rewarded with a 360 degree panorama of sea and countryside.

Our thanks go to Chris and Glo for a wellorganised and researched day. The company was jolly, the weather fine and the enjoyment levels high.

Our July meeting began with sadness. Condolences were expressed for the death of Michael Cheek, a much-loved and respected

supporter of our club. He has audited our accounts for many years up to and including the onset of his illness. He was a kind and thoughtful man - enormously helpful and caring and will be sadly and genuinely missed. Our love and thoughts go out to Jane. A collection in his name was raised for the maintenance of the fabric of St Martin’s Church.

We then heard about various Overstrand Together fundraising events throughout the summer. On 2 August there will be a Fair, lasting most of the day, and requests have been made for tombola prizes and for homemade cakes. Several of our members will be making cakes and these will be taken to Josie at 55 Cromer Road the day before so that she and Jean can take them all together early the next morning to place on the stall. Tombola prizes should be taken direct to Marie Kimp next door to the Central Stores.

Our speaker for today was unable to join us so Glo stepped into the breach and gave us a very entertaining and informative talk under the title Gnomes from Home, charting the history of garden gnomes, their origins and folklore. She

did well preparing and delivering the talk under difficult circumstances and we very much appreciate her hard work.

As there will be no meeting in August, our next will be the cream tea on 10 September. Please inform Josie if you are unable to be there as she needs to know how many scones to make!

Our October meeting is open to all and visitors are always welcome. It will be held on 8 October in the Methodist Church as usual and will begin at 2.30pm. Non-members are asked for £1.50 at the door which covers a raffle ticket, tea or coffee and biscuits. Please come and check us out! We would love to see you.

For further information please contact our co-ordinator Glo Begley on 576539 or the assistant co-ordinator Chris Wood on 579433.

Survey Focuses on Helping People Stay Independent

Central Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and Norfolk County Council are running a joint public survey via the ‘Your Voice’ membership scheme to find out how to help older people stay independent for longer. The survey focuses on ‘Falls and Bone Health’ and aims to learn more about what causes people to fall. It is also designed to get feedback on how and when people access health services after they have fallen.

Dr James Gair, North Norfolk GP and Falls Lead said “We want to hear from older people and their families about what we can do to help people live independently for as long as possible. We want to find out more about what is going on in people’s lives around the time they fall and where they turn to immediately afterwards. We also need to know what type of on-going support they need until they return to good health and full mobility.”

The quartet plays melodic jazz standards and music from the Great American Song Book and the Glade at Fairhaven is an ideal spot to lay-back, relax and be taken back to the days of the jazz and swing era. The line-up is Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophones), Peter Gregory (guitar), Liz Underdown (bass) and Vic Brown (drums). They really swing - four musicians who play what they love and love what they play! The concert is included in the normal garden entry fee £6.10 adults (£5.60 concessions), £3.60 children, under fives free.

The quartet’s sister band, the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band also has the following public gigs in August:

• sunday 3: the Goat inn, skeyton, 1.30 pm - free admission, but best to book if you would like a table for lunch, 01692 538600. • saturday 9: sidestrand Village Fete, noon. nominal admission charge.

• sunday 24: the King’s Arms, reepham, noon. Admission free.

Falls can have a major effect on an older person’s quality of life and can mean the difference between being able to live independently and needing residential care. However this is not just an older person’s issue. Dr Gair continues “Some of the factors that put people at risk of falling can start many years before, such as poor bone health from an early menopause or from treatment for prostate cancer. We also want to see how aware people are of this and hope to get people as young as 40 to take part in the survey.”

‘Your Voice’ is a membership scheme run by Norfolk County Council for anyone interested in sharing their views and experiences to help develop and improve a wide range of services in Norfolk. Members are invited to have their say on a number of services provided by other public sector organisations including county, city and district councils and clinical commissioning groups.

Cromer WI Meeting

We started our July meeting with the business side of things. Members who had organised a lovely Strawberry Tea Party and a trip on the river in Norwich in June were thanked. Arrangements were finalised for a visit to Sandringham in September. We were told that Frances Lee had been presented with a Pathfinder Award for her Tai Chi work by the MAFCUK – Martial Arts and Fitness Coach UK. There were only 8 of these awards presented in the country so well done Frances. The competition for a photograph of a beach scene was won by Moira Harding with Irene Allan second and Hazel Patrickson third. Cromer WI was formed in July 1937 so every year instead of a speaker we have a birthday tea. Members were treated to an assortment of sandwiches, dips, sausage rolls and plenty of home- made cakes, all prepared by the committee members. We had a birthday cake made for us by Val Lodge who also had a special birthday herself. We had a lovely afternoon.

New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street. We do not have a meeting in August so the next one will be September.

Cromer Royal British Legion Great War Commemoration Exhibition

The exhibition will be held at the Community Hall, Garden Street, Cromer on Saturday 9 August between 10am and 5pm.

On display will be many items from The Great War including an iconic Vickers heavy machine gun from 1917. Items and photographs of local Great War interest will be on show and you are encouraged to bring along items from the period to be identified, including medals and badges etc.

You are invited to sing along with our choir and pianist. Refreshments will be on sale courtesy of the Women’s Section RBL.

Further information is available from John Needham on 01263 510146 or Robin Lilley on 01263 510287. All donations will be made to the Royal British Legion.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

The Sheringham & Cromer Lions are a relatively small Lions Club and are desperately trying to recruit more members but they still manage to raise money for good causes.

Many people suffered as a result of the tidal surge flooding that hit Walcott, Bacton & Happisbugh back in December 2013. Some of the victims of the tidal surge flooding can be seen in the picture (taken by Maurice Gray) being presented with cheques by outgoing President Anton Elliott of the Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club. The Lions collected £1,250 for the victims following the floods by holding street collections and appeals to local residents. In February they gave the Walcott, Bacton & Happisburgh Flood Support Group £500 and in June the they presented a further £750 by way of 15 cheques for £50 to individual victims.

If you would like more information about what Lions do or would like to come along to a meeting please contact Lion Hazel on 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com

‘King Canute’ visits PROBUS

The first meeting of the new club year of Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS was attended by a latter-day King Canute in the form of North Norfolk Council’s Senior Coastal Engineer, Brian Farrow. Brian, whose background is civil engineering and who has been employed by North Norfolk Council for nearly thirty-five years, gave a fascinating talk on the battle to protect our shores and communities from the advancing sea in the past, present and future.

Under the title, ‘Coastal Defence Works in Cromer’ Brian explained how the sea constantly changed our shore line and showed with the aid of slides, the damage caused by the recent storm of December 2013. Although water levels were higher in some areas along our coast than in the floods of 1953, a better understanding of the sea and good forward planning meant that although there was significant damage to property and sea defences, there was no loss of life. Defences were now being repaired and strengthened where necessary and there is optimism about the future.

After his presentation, Brian answered questions from PROBUS members before Mike Osborne proposed a vote of thanks on behalf of the club.

PROBUS Clubs exist throughout the country to enable retired Professional and Business gentlemen to meet together and socialise. If you are interested in finding out more about PROBUS, contact Club Secretary, Gordon Hatchett on 01263 826881 for an informal chat. In association with www.cromerdeals.co.uk

A Brand New Venture

Sheringham & District Philatelic Society are joining together with craftspeople from North Norfolk to hold a Stamp and Craft Fair. This will be held during Sheringham Carnival Week at The Lighthouse, 62 Cromer Road, Sheringham (opposite the new Tesco store) on Saturday 9 August from 10am until 2pm.

The venture came about when a member’s partner made the suggestion to Gerry Smith, Chairman of the Society. He discussed the idea with his wife Dawn, herself an avid crafter all her life coming from three generations of crafts and professional needlework ladies. Dawn and Gerry have organised a number of craft fairs in North Norfolk since moving to the area in 1996.

On the day there will be eight stamp club members’ tables who will be delighted to help with all aspects of stamp collecting. The Club itself was founded in 1969 and is well supported in North Norfolk and welcomes new members on the second Monday of each month at the Church Hall, West Runton from 7.30pm until 9.30pm.

There will also be over 12 craft and charity tables at the Fair with a wide range of different unique crafts on sale as well as a tombola, cake stall, bric-a-brac and raffles. Admission will be free. We are sure it will be a very interesting and enjoyable day for everyone.

A club tournament was organised by Vice President Keith Pantling and this was followed by an excellent tea prepared by ladies from the club. There were many sandwiches, homemade cakes and fancies and strawberries and cream. A raffle and auction was held and some £235 was raised that afternoon to go towards the President’s charity of the year Papworth Hospital. The tournament winners were Bob Allard for the men – and not as you may have read elsewhere, because I got it wrong – and Mary Adams for the ladies.

Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low Low

We must congratulate two of our ladies Janet Morton and Chrissie Laskey on reaching the finals of the Norfolk Bowls Association Ladies Pairs. As a result they will be representing Norfolk County in the National Finals at Royal Leamington Spa in August. The actual County Finals do not take place until the end of August. We wish them well in both competitions. In the Hansells league there was a defeat at home against North Walsham ‘B’ 1-4 although you may not have thought so due to the time spent having refreshments in the clubhouse with the opposition afterwards! But the following week a good win at home against Fakenham 3½-1½ was a much better result. Just two more league games to go now so the team needs all the points it can gather.

The County Federation League teams are still inconsistent. John’s Crabs travelled to play Foulsham at Bawdeswell and lost 0-9 President Bernice in centre of club players but then returned home to beat prior to game on President’s Day Lakeside 7-2. Now that was a good result. Kay’s Crows had similar results. At home against Wells Elsmith they lost 0-9 but bounced back the following week away against Holt Barn Owls and won 7-2. Roger’s NANSA team are struggling but we cannot understand why. Away against Sheringham Morley they lost 0-8, mind you that may have been due to the good quality of the oppositions green. At home against Overstrand there was a 2-6 defeat followed by a similar 2-6 defeat away against Suffield Park. In the next two week period we only have two friendly games and both of those are away at Swanton Abbott BC and Watton (Loch Neaton) BC. Looking further ahead however we look forward to Carnival Day when a special club competition called Australian Pairs is being organised by Hansells team Captain Graham. We may well have target bowls available for anyone coming up to the green on that day as well. That’s a bit of fun.

And so to the list of the other matches being played on the green that you may wish to come and watch, and support.
