Full Speed Ahead

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

The campaign to build a skate park in Cromer continues to make progress towards seeing its aims become a reality during the next few months.

Almost £140,000 has been either received or pledged, leaving only a little more than £10,000 to find. The campaign is working hard, and now the race is on to raise the shortfall, ensuring that construction can begin later this year.

It has long been recognised that Cromer lacks a top class facility for its young people. The skate park promises to be a huge asset to the young people of the town. It will also make Cromer a more attractive destination for those in search of holidays with something to offer to everybody, and so is highly likely to benefit the life of the town as a whole.

In recent weeks, the momentum has been maintained by support from many very different sources.

Cromer Academy Year 7 Emergency used on scene. They also learned about the Services Day work of NARS, a voluntary charity of Doctors On 21 July, as part of SMSC week, Year 7 students were given the opportunity to witness a road traffic collision in the car park of Cromer Academy.

Students spent the morning watching Norfolk Fire Service, East of England Ambulance Service and Norfolk Accident Rescue Service (NARS) work collaboratively at a mock incident where a drunk driver hit a pedestrian and crashed into a wall. Blue lights and sirens added to the excitement of the day, as well as the chance to see the roof being cut off a car! After the incident, students then were guided through each stage of the scene, whilst questioning the members of the emergency services and getting the chance to sit in the ambulance and fire engine. All found this incredibly informative and applied the four strands of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to the incident as a whole.

In the afternoon, students learned how a Major Incident is dealt with by the emergency services, and some even wore the tabards

and other medical professionals providing critical care at the roadside in support of the emergency services. After digesting their newly gained medical knowledge, it was time to put what they had learned into practice with some hands on first aid including mobilising a patient with neck and spinal injuries, CPR, the Ambulance Service and Norfolk Fire Service recovery position and for giving up their free time to work with the the importance of students at Cromer Academy. monitoring. Students also were taught how to deal with emergencies that they may come across in the home New installations and full such as diabetic coma and fitting. service on all models

All students commented on what an exciting and educational day it had been and some have commented that they aspire to have a career in the emergency services with aspiring Firefighters, Paramedics and Anaesthetists. A huge thanks to Dr Drew Welch, NARS, East of England

North Norfolk Youth HUBS – SLAM night

The North Norfolk Youth HUBS are local Youth Projects run by the charity MAP that meet every two weeks in Sheringham, Mundesley, Stalham and Cromer. These Hubs are for the enjoyment of local 13-19 year olds and aim to offer opportunities, information, advice and positive activities as well as engaging in community projects to help show local young people in the positive light they deserve.

To celebrate one year of the Youth HUBs we have decided to join force with The Garage (Music and Arts Centre) in Norwich and the Cromer Community Centre to put on a talent display organised and performed by local youth. It will be North Norfolk’s first SLAM night.

This is an appeal to any (13-19 year old) local bands, performers, singers, dancers or any talented young people to contact the Youth HUBs to discuss performing at the SLAM night on 5 September in Cromer. We can help with equipment and even travel too if necessary. You can offer to perform as one of the main acts or just come along and join the scratch round where anyone can stand up and have 5 minutes to perform. The winner of this round will receive a prize of music vouchers provided by the Community Centre - all performers will receive tickets to the Garage’s next SLAM night in Norwich.

It is set to be a great night so contact Senior Youth Worker Will Mills on 07876864281, email williammills@map.uk.net or @NNHUBS on Facebook to book tickets, express your interest in performing or to book an audition to be one of our main acts. Auditions will be held at your local Youth HUB at a time convenient to you. We’ll look forward to hearing from you.

Holt Rotary Club are once again holding their annual charity golf day in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH).

The confirmed date is Friday 15 August at Sheringham Golf Club. This will be the eighth time the event has taken place and organisers are urging golfers to sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. The day, which will raise money for the charity’s Quidenham Hospice, will run using the stableford point system with the best two scores from each team counting per hole.

Although the day will consist of teams of 4, organisers encourage individuals and smaller groups to sign up as they can be placed accordingly with other groups. The cost per person is £48 which includes a meal afterwards. To enter email James - jamesgcoker@talktalk.net

Rose Peasgood, EACH Norfolk Fundraiser, said “It’s great to have the continuous support of Holt Rotary Club who put a lot of effort into organising their successful golf day ever year. The money they raise goes towards offering care and support to local life threatened children, young people and their families.”

Norman Lamb tours villages in his constituency each summer, holding an outdoor advice surgery at each location. This year the tour will be spread over five full days to help ensure he can speak to as many people as possible.

It is not necessary to book an appointment in advance for the village tour. Anyone not able to make it to one of the village tour sessions can arrange an appointment with Mr Lamb via his office. Full contact details are available on his website: www.normanlamb.org.uk. 8

Local heroes of the Great War celebrated by Norfolk Primary School

Aldborough children share Theatre Royal stage with John Hurt

Hilda Zigomela, who was born in Rougham Hall, Norfolk in 1869, kept detailed notebooks of her life. The only one missing is from 1914. Her son died in the First World War. Sidney Smith was a Norfolk-born regular soldier who wrote telling letters home from the front. Their characters and letters formed the basis of Aldborough Primary School’s contribution to To End All Wars, which also starred John Hurt and was performed at Norwich Theatre Royal. Aldborough were one of four schools selected to take part in the event, a collaborative project which celebrates the contribution made by of a cross section of Norfolk people to the Great War. The other three schools were North Denes, Hellesden High and Arden Grove. Aldborough children, aged 10 and 11, were responsible for the design and direction of the characters’ storylines. Music and film made by the children were also part of the final performance.

Lead artist Xenia Horne, who is running the project in schools, said “To End All Wars was a project where we have been able to work closely with Aldborough and

other schools across the county, exploring the lives of real people and their experience of World War 1. We have really enjoyed the chance to explore source material, songs and stories and build the six performances with our artists. It was fantastic to see the work on the stage of the Theatre Royal with John Hurt narrating.”

Here are some of the children’s comments: • “I learnt new techniques to look upwards over the audience which seems really strange. The actor used this method when we went to see Private Peaceful” Joe Groom • “It was fun working with professionals from the theatre” Megan Rounce • “At the beginning we

did loads of drama techniques and I couldn’t see the point but we used everything we’ve learnt in the final production” Abi Durand • “Creating the film with Tim was really cool, we helped to direct” Brandon Mantell (Animator Tim Edwards, who also runs the ‘MagiMation’ animation workshops at Norwich Puppet Theatre).

“This was wonderful for our children,” says Deputy Head Jill Morgan, who coordinated the project at the school. “Not only in terms of drama and performance, but also through the truly exciting learning opportunities – we’ve seen memorabilia and heard family stories that have brought history to life.”

Afternoon Teas The perfect way to spend an English summer afternoon and we’re delighted to be working once more with About with Friends this year to provide wonderful afternoon teas every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2.30 – 4.30pm.

We do try to cater for all dietary requirements, even the less common, and we are finding that gluten-free diets are a regular occurrence for us now, even for afternoon teas. We make a real effort to try to accommodate everyone and most of our a la carte is now gluten free, although desserts are always a real challenge. Dan, one of our CdPs, makes the most gorgeous cheesecakes and he enlisted the help of Ann Graveling to come up with a gluten-free base that is probably nicer than the traditional biscuit base. Do come up for dinner and give it a try! As always 01263512412 to book.

Gluten free White Chocolate & Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake

THE BASE 25g Gluten free porridge oats 40g mixed pumpkin, sunflower and flax seeds 155g gluten free plain flour 50g soft brown sugar Pinch of salt 1 tbsp gluten free baking powder 2tbsp margerine (dairy free if desired)

2tbsp milk (cow, soya or rice)

1. Smear the base cheesecake tin with butter and line with parchment paper 2. Add sugar to soft cheese and beat until soft 3. Melt chocolate slowly over heat, make sure it doesn’t burn, add to soft cheese and sugar, turn with a wooden spoon 4. Add three sheets gelatine to 50ml of boiling water and beat with a fork until completely dissolved, then add to mix 5. Tug of War competition gets Cromer in the Carnival spirit

Crowds lined Cromer seafront on Sunday 20 July to watch teams battle it out in Cromer Carnival’s annual Tug of War competition which is seen as an appetiser for the main Carnival celebrations.

On a hot and sunny Sunday four teams entered the Competition, which has been revived in recent years, and saw both tourists and locals get into the Carnival spirit.

Cromer Carnival Tug of War Champions 2014 The Welly Credit: Dave Roberts After an hour and a half of competition the Tug of War was won by The Welly for the second year running. Liam Wade, captain of The Welly team said “it’s great to be the undefeated champions for the second year in a row. We faced stiff competition in the first pull against a sprightly team and the final pull against The Foundry was our best performance of the day”.

Second place went to The Foundry Arms, Northrepps. Third place went to When in Rome – a team of locals from Cromer, Sheringham and North Walsham – who beat RNLI Cromer in the semi final.

Carnival spokesman Kate Royall said “there was a fantastic atmosphere on the day and those taking part really did their teams proud, we are already looking forward to next year’s competition!”

The winning team, The Welly, will be representing Cromer Carnival in a friendly Tug of War Competition between Cromer and Sheringham Carnivals. The first leg will take place on 7 August in Sheringham Now open within the grounds of Groveland during Sheringham Carnival and the reciprocal pull will take place in Farm Shop, stocking a fabulous range of Quilting and Cromer on 21 August during Cromer Carnival Week.

Coffee Morning and Parachute Jump for Myeloma UK

Stephen Browne may be a familiar face to many readers as he runs the Coffee 2 Go stall on Cromer Market every Friday.

When Stephen’s son Ross mentioned that he would like to do a parachute jump, Stephen suggested he could take the opportunity to raise money for a worthy charity.

Stephen continues ‘as I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (Bone Marrow Cancer) in 2008 it seemed appropriate to choose Myeloma UK as the cause to benefit from the jump.

Myeloma UK provides help and support for patients and carers and fund research into the causes and treatments of Myeloma. Therefore on 22 August, Coffee 2 Go will be holding a Coffee Morning on Cromer Market where I will donate 50p per cup sold to Myeloma UK and also give potential sponsors of the parachute jump the opportunity to meet and sponsor my son Ross’. Cromer Carnival is nearly here!

Cromer Carnival is on the horizon and will begin its celebrations with two Children’s Weeks before the main carnival week which runs 16th – 22nd August this year. The festivities began this week with the ever popular Chalk on the Prom competition.

The Carnival, now in its 45th year, sees a packed programme of over 120 events and activities across the celebrations. The programme promises something for everyone from the traditional to the new across the summer holidays.

The carnival atmosphere has been building in recent weeks with the annual Clay Pigeon Shoot and Tug of War Competition.

Dan Whitby, Team Manager for the Bolddog Lings said “Following the success of the team so far this year and the appearance on Britain's Got Talent we are looking forward and excited about returning to a home audience at this year's Cromer Carnival".

After a spectacular day on the field the Grand Carnival Parade will begin at 7pm from the Carnival Field before it snakes through the town. Chairman Tony Shipp said “I have had requests for entry forms to the parade coming in since the beginning of the year”.

Many of the ‘Carnival favourites’ return this year with the Bonny Baby Competition, Knobbly Knees Contest, Glamorous Grandmother Competition, Waiter and Waitresses Race and the fabulous Family Fun Day.

The entertainment continues well into the evening across the week from Family Night to a return of the ever popular Wrestling night and the Grand Firework display to live bands at the Carnival Field and in pubs across the town. On Sunday 18 August the Carnival will play host to an evening of family fun Wrestling for the second year in a row. After the success of last year’s Wrestling night the World Association of Wrestling return with a show which is suitable for all the family and is full of larger than life characters and skilful manoeuvres. Tickets are on sale via The Copy Shop in Cromer.

Tuesday 19 August sees the Carnival Family Fun day on the Carnival field with an all new line up of events in the arena including The East Anglian Working Newfoundland Dogs, the Joseph Pearce Fire Stunt Show, the Cascade Kite Display team and a return to the Carnival by East Anglia’s premier formation aerobatic display team The Wildcats. Across the field there will be craft activities, circus workshops, the 999 show, appearances by Peppa Pig, Siderman, Mickey & Minnie Mouse plus much, much more.

Carnival Day on Wednesday 20 August begins at 9.30am in Cromer Town with the Romford Drum & Trumpet Corps playing at Henry Blogg Gardens before moving to the Carnival field with a packed day of thrills in the air and thrills on the ground. Highlights in the arena include the UK’s No.1 motorcycle display team The Bolddog Lings, The Devil’s Horsemen and Elaine Hill’s Sheepdogs.

In the air on Carnival Day Cromer will welcome back The Red Arrows in their 50th display season at 11am.

Later on Friday evening Cromer will be awash with hundreds of people in fancy dress making their way to the Carnival Fancy Dress Dance in the Carnival marquee. Always a sight to be seen, the town centre will be full of people in elaborate and fun costumes before they snake their way to the carnival field for the ever-competitive judging at 10pm. Tickets for the Fancy Dress Dance go on sale on Saturday 2nd August at 9am from The Cottage on Louden Road in Cromer on a first-come, first served basis.

Carnival organisers said “with Children’s Weeks now here the Carnival atmosphere has certainly landed in Cromer. There are so many events taking place this year with something for everyone to enjoy and take part in. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to the Carnival this year, it’s a great day out for all the family, in a beautiful seaside location. ”

The main carnival week starts on Saturday 16 August with the Carnival Car Boot Sale, Craft Fair, Beer Festival, Dog Show and events in the arena on the Carnival field.

Events continue on Sunday 17 August with the Cromer Custom & Amerivan Car Show and Motorbike & Trike Show. The Crowning of Miss Cromer, Hayley Massingham, will take place at 12.15pm by Cromer Seaside Special Stars Paul Eastwood and Adam Daye.

Tuesday 19 August and application forms can be collected from Cromer Shopping Centre.

Entry prices to the Carnival field across the week remain low. On Tuesday 19 August entry is £4 for Adults with free entry for children under 16 who are accompanied by an adult. On Wednesday 20 August the admission prices remain at Adults £6, Senior Citizens £4, Children £3 or family ticket £15 (2 adults + 2 children).

On Thursday evening the popular Grand Carnival Firework Display will take place at approximately 9.15pm after the Carnival Party on the Lawns during the day. The fireworks display will be preceded by the Illuminated Parade at 8.30pm which leads people from Cromer to the Carnival field to watch the fireworks. Once again there is no charge for admission to the field to watch the fireworks however the collectors will be about with buckets collecting donations to ensure these events continue.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

Three members of the society spent an enjoyable day judging the entries in this year’s competition for local schools. It was pleasing to see Gresham Village Primary enter for the first time in a year when the number of entries was down on last year. It was particularly disappointing that for the first time ever none of the schools in Cromer entered. Let’s hope that next year will see them back. The winning school was Kelling Primary. The judges were

shown around by three of the pupils who were able to describe the work they had been doing and show them the range of plants, fruit and vegetables that they had grown. Well done to them and to the other schools that entered and a special thank you to John Spittles who organises the competition on our behalf.

The second of this year’s outings was to West Barsham Hall near Fakenham. Our visit came shortly after the Are you Interested in the Motor Industry and garden at the Hall had been open as wanting to build a career? part of the National Ideally over 18 and with a clean driving Licence. visit. The gardens are only open to groups by appointment or for the NGS but if you have the opportunity to visit this excellent garden please do so. On our way back to Cromer we stopped at Creake Plant Centre to top up on plants for our gardens and from the look of the coach on our return the time there was well spent.

We now have a short break but activities will resume in September. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month in the Community Centre in Cromer. For an annual subscription of £10 members have free entry to our monthly meetings and can take part in the shows and outings we organise. Anyone joining before the end of this year will have their membership carried over until the end of 2015 so why not give the society a try. For details ring the chairman on 01263 514399. CROMER FLOWER CLUB

We had a lovely meeting in July when Alison Cushing gave a workshop involving plant manipulation to create a pleasing arrangement with fresh flowers to grace any coffee table. Alison gave helpful advice which was much appreciated by the ladies present. Coffee and a raffle which included Alison’s arrangement followed.

There is no meeting in August as we shall be decorating the Carnival Queen’s float.

Our next meeting is on Monday 15 September at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School with demonstrator Adele Kent presenting ‘Take an old bag shopping’. Visitors are always welcome.

Cantamus

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Waitrose North Walsham for their generous donation and to all their customers who chose our community choir and voted with their green disc. We plan to use the £290 to purchase moveable lighting for when we perform in the local churches. Our next performance will be our Christmas concert on 6 December. The programme of French and English promises to be a festive affair including pieces by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, famous for writing the music used as theme to the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as a selection of Christmas Carols ranging from traditional works such as John Taverner's 'The Lamb' and arrangements by John Rutter, to arrangements of Frosty the Snowman and a new carol written by our musical director David Ballard.

Cantamus will begin rehearsing for this concert on Thursday 4 September at 7.30pm in Southrepps Church. We are a very friendly choir prone to exercising our vocal chords in laughter as much as song. If you love singing do come and join us. No auditions are required. Our singers are of mixed ability, some extremely experienced; others whose only experience is in the shower and with our strong community spirit, you’ll be surprised how soon you become part of the team, looking forward to the Thursday rehearsals. As our members come from Fully insu red, regu lar or one-off clea ns Sheringham to

Stalham, Mundesley to Aysham if transport is a problem a lift share may be possible.

For more information please contact David on 07785 782 498. We look forward to singing with you.

Overstrand Evening WI

They say everyone has ‘a book in them’ that is waiting to be written. This is certainly true of our speaker Anne Shilton who shared some of her writing experiences at our July meeting. Anne, who has written a novel titled Barricades, explained how she planned the basic storyline and researched in France for content. With her novel complete, Anne explored various ways of publishing, either through a publishing house, vanity publishing or her ultimate choice, self-publishing. Anne feels that self-publishing gives her full control over her book, in particular the content, retail price, title and cover design. Intrigued by Barricade’s introduction a number of members purchased copies and with another two books in the pipeline we wished Anne further success.

Following a break for refreshments the meeting continued covering both local, county and national correspondence and arrangements for members who will be providing refreshments at the WW1 Exhibition in the Parish Hall on 14 & 15 August. Our next meeting, on 13 August will be a Craft Evening. Visitors and prospective members are welcome to our meetings which are on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Overstrand.

Revolutionary non-surgical laser treatment for varicose veins. No more vein stripping!

Coltishall Clinic is pleased to announce a treatment program for varicose veins.

EVLT- endovenous laser therapy - is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour. It has been endorsed by NICE as the treatment of choice for varicose veins.

Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart. Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux”) of blood back into the foot. The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to

a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age.

Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults.

Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg. It had a prolonged recovery period and veins could come back due to scar tissue.

The new laser treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear.

Endovenous laser therapy involves the

insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the faulty vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy.

Coltishall Clinic also offers sclerotherapy and lasers to treat leftover spider veins.

For more information or to book an appointment, call 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.

Felbrigg Hall receives major accolade and bids farewell to an era Coinciding with the retirement of the current General Manager of the Felbrigg Hall and Sheringham Park Estates and of the Roman Camp at West Runton, Felbrigg Hall has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor, one of the Internet’s major worldwide sources of information for tourists. Currently Felbrigg is placed at number 8 on the list of attractions in Norwich and surrounding area (113 in total). In reviews of Felbrigg 230 out of 249 reviewers awarded four or five stars. Only one reviewer gave it one star. Many reviewers commented strongly on the magnificent walled garden.

This walled garden was the scene in late July for a wonderful garden party on a beautiful English summer evening to allow the staff, and the dedicated volunteers from the Hall, the shops and gardens of all three sites and the volunteer gardeners to bid farewell to the retiring General Manager, Ray Sandham who has been in charge here since 2001. Ray has had a varied career from a foreman baker after leaving school to Estate Manager at Bodelwyd-

This is entirely due to Ray’s unique personal vision for the properties under his control, his personal skills in motivating the full-time staff and the many volunteers who devote their time to Felbrigg Hall, its shops ( and those at the other sites) and the beautiful gardens at all three sites Ray will be greatly missed by everyone from the staff to the hundreds of volunteers but his vision for the NT properties in the Cromer area will live on with the appointment of Eleanor Akinlade who has worked with Ray for four years as House Manager at Felbrigg. Ella shares his vision for the continued improvement of our local properties and will be a worthy and popular successor.

Gifts... and finally...?

Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

This is the fourth article in series on gifts and deals with some special considerations.

Where two or more people wish to make a joint gift, each individual donor needs to be considered separately. Where, for example, a married couple have differing children, their respective interests should be considered. Often there is a conflict of interest in terms of the advice to be given to the joint donors. Questions of possible undue influence become particularly important in such cases. Having sufficient mental capacity to make the gift remains as important as ever.

Very often the intention behind the gift is to avoid its value being taken into account in relation to means-testing for care home fees. What is often overlooked is that there are circumstances in which the value of the share of an asset of a person making such a gift would be disregarded anyway. The following are examples of such circumstances: a temporary stay in residential care; for the first 12 weeks of a permanent stay in residential care; where the home is occupied by a spouse, someone living as a spouse (or civil partner) or any relative over 60 or who is incapacitated; in some cases the local authority can exercise its discretion to disregard the house.

There is an automatic presumption of undue influence where the person giving is the parent and the person receiving is their child. Separate

advice is the best way of rebutting such a presumption.

The circumstances of the recipient are important too. The ‘Three Ds’ (death, divorce and debt) each carry major potential problems. Add to that possible future mental incapacity and the risk of a family falling-out. This is a story as old as humanity: King Lear gave away his kingdom and was then shunned by his family. Gifting causes loss of economic power with all that can result. It is not unknown for a beneficiary later to forget or disagree about agreement reached at the time of the gift. Careful planning and legal- structuring provide protection for the donor. In order to protect a donor, a gift of their home may be coupled with a lease for life, either at a peppercorn rent or (if Inheritance Tax is a consideration) at a full market rent. Careful tailoring to suit the individual’s pocket, ‘family dynamics’ and level of acceptable risk is a critical part of the solicitor’s role.

Saffron Insurance’s Big Challenge - Tour De Saffron

One day, six men, 180 miles to raise money for a team of people close to our hearts

A six-strong team of cyclists from insurance broker, Saffron Insurance, completed a 180 mile cycle challenge on Sunday 20 July. Inspired by the arrival of the Tour de France in Saffron Walden, where the company’s head office is located, the team created the journey to raise money for the staff and families of Carver Barracks, based at Wimbish just a short distance from the broker’s headquarters.

Carver Barracks is the home for the Army’s bomb disposal teams who regularly face some of the most dangerous activities around the world often spending two years out of every three away from home. Saffron Insurance have, for some years, worked hard to raise money for the soldiers and their families so that they can enjoy a special day out whilst they have precious time together. Last year was a trip to the Pantomime in Cambridge and this year Saffron are proud to support them again to show their appreciation for the work that they do.

The six volunteers were Phil Marler, Ben Dalgliesh, Dan Wardley, John Anderson, and Ollie Charlesworth who are all staff at Saffron Insurance and David Goodey an associate of the firm. They set out from Cromer at 4.30am and visited each of Saffron’s other branch offices in Soham, Haverhill, Sudbury, Great Dunmow, Royston and finished at the Eight Bells public house in Saffron Walden.

The cyclists heading out of Cromer

En route, the team were also joined by two of the serving officers (Staff Sgt Steve Walsh and Sgt Carl McCarthy) from Carver Barracks. After 16 hours, as the team crossed the finish line in the dimming light of the evening they were greeted by appreciative applause from

Suffield Annual 50 Bird Clay Shoot

This event, which this year will take place on 6 September, has gone from strength to strength since the first shoot was held in 2010 to raise money for the upkeep of the village hall. Visitor numbers have doubled since then, attracted by cleverly laid out stands which provide just the right amount of challenge to ensure good sport for shooters at all levels of ability. The £100 first prize is another attraction of course, as are very good second and third prizes, but perhaps for many the real appeal is the opportunity to shoot in a relaxed local atmosphere against the backdrop of some of the best views Norfolk has to offer.

uniformed soldiers from the barracks along with other assembled friends and family.

Along the way the team largely managed to avoid the enormous thunderstorms that had caused localised flooding around East Anglia during the day. “The weather was never going to dampen our enthusiasm”, said Phil Marler, who dreamt up the idea of the ride. ”The whole team had put in so many miles of training in preparation for this event and we were determined to see it through, come what may! Having said that, I count our lucky stars that the only wet weather we encountered lasted about 10 minutes”.

David Beswick, managing director of Saffron Insurance added “This was no easy challenge for the team, I am extremely proud of them for giving so much of their time and energy to raise money towards such a fantastic cause”.

The team are hopeful to raise around £7,500 and donations can still be made at www.saffroninsurance.co.uk/sponsorship.asp

Beginners of all ages are catered for too, by a separate ‘have a go’ stand where novices can try their hand under the supervision of a qualified shooting instructor, who will even provide a gun for them to shoot with. And this year for the first time, visitors will also be able to try out archery if they fancy a more sedate approach to target shooting.

Stalls offer a variety of shooting merchandise for sale, and a BBQ and tea tent provides the ideal spot from which to watch the action, chat with old friends and make new ones - an excellent day out, not to be missed. For details please contact Alex Honey on 07818 873709 or email shoot@suffield.org.uk

… As we come to the end of the league seasons. The Hansells League team travelled to Cawston hopefully looking for a win in both their last two games. Despite every players’ best efforts however at Cawston it was a 1-4 defeat. They then travelled to Lakeside BC to play their last league game of the season. This also resulted in a 1-4 defeat. This has been a disappointing season for the Hansells League team. Whilst not expecting to storm to the top of the league some better results had been expected by all the players. Time for reflection during the autumn and winter however and I am sure 2015 will see a vibrant refreshed team show the rest of the league what they are really capable of. In the County Federation league the Crabs had a good win away at Holt Tawny Owls 9-0 which meant that a win at Mill Farm would see the team well placed in the league going into the final game against Fakenham ‘B’. However the challenging green on the Holt Road just got the better of them and they lost 2-7. I am sure the players will be looking for a good final result against Fakenham. The Crows at home against Suffield Park on the same evening had a very good 7-2 win and they too will be looking to finish the season with a win at Trunch. Roger’s NANSA team have had some ‘varying’ results. Away at Erpingham there was an 8-0 win and then against Dilham a complete reversal, yes a 0-8 defeat. They now have two games to go so the team are hoping to finish in style. On Carnival Day a special club competition called Australian Pairs is being organised by Hansells team Captain Graham. We may well have target bowls available for anyone coming up to the green on that day as well. That’s a bit of fun. With the weather fine you can get a wonderful view of the Red Arrows at 11.00am and in the evening many club members, family and friends will watch the Cromer Carnival procession from near the clubhouse and a very friendly sociable evening is normally had by all.

And so to the list of the matches being played on the green that you may wish to come and watch, and support: Tuesday 12 August 2pm Buxton BC: mixed triples game Saturday 16 August 2pm Sutton-On-Sea BC: mixed rinks game Sunday 17 August 2pm Suffield Park BC: mixed triples game Monday 18 August 2pm Mundesley BC: mixed triples game Wednesday 20 August Carnival Day: Australian Pairs: Target Bowls Saturday 23 August 2pm Ladies v Gentlemen: Inter club conflict. No holds barred Sunday 24 August 2pm St Edmundsbury BC: mixed triples game Peter Bird 01263 512120
