AUTOMATIC DRIVING for one time only LESSONS
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
North Norfolk has been awash with 70 bootiful boats since Easter as part of the Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival’s annual art trail and you will soon have the chance to own one!
For one day only on Sunday 24 August they will all be on show together before being auctioned off to the highest bidder, raising funds for local charities. On the same day the Festival will also be hosting their annual World Pier Crabbing Championships from 11am – 2pm as well as hosting an array of local market stalls along the promenade from 10am. From Cromer to Sheringham and all the way in between the boats have been on the trail in open spaces and shop windows before they all go into the Grand Charity Auction on Sunday 24 August at 2pm.

The auction will be hosted by auctioneer Martyn Fox on Cromer Pier Forecourt. Martyn has helped raise over £29,000 on behalf of the Festival through the previous four Festival charity auctions. The auction will be the first and only time people will have a chance to see all the boats displayed together - they will be on view from 11am on the day of the auction.
The 70 lots on sale, sponsored by local businesses and tricolated by local people, include boats decorated by artists Gita Dickenson, Paul Darley and Samuel Thomas, as well as schools and community groups. The trail has received wondrous attention from locals and visitors alike who have taken on the challenge of the trail since it began. Schools, youth groups, business, organisations and many talented local people have produced a stunning array of quirky boats. Artists have painted, knitted, printed, sewn, adorned and transformed their boats in an array of methods and all will be up for auction. "The 2014 Crab & Lobster Festival has again shown the popularity of this early season event” said Festival Chairman Tony Shipp. He continued “hundreds of visitors and local families have followed the Festival Art Trail through both towns, the auction is your chance to bid for your favourite and is the climax to this year’s festival which has proved the most popular yet. We hope that locals and visitors alike will spend the day with us in Cromer on 24 August and take part in the Crabbing Championships before attending and bidding at the Auction.” For the third year running the festival will run its Community Grant Scheme for local charities in the Cromer and Sheringham areas to apply to for the funds raised at auction. Festival secretary Kate Royall said “the Festival thought it vital to support charities local to Cromer and Sheringham which provide exceptional support to the local community. Over the past three years the Crab & Lobster Festival has donated over £29,000 to local charities. The grant scheme means we can continue to support local good causes throughout the two towns”. In 2015 the Festival will run 15-17 May. Sponsorship opportunities are now available. Please contact the festival secretary on 07775 337201 or email enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk

Cromer Pier – Council announces refurbishment programme to tidal surge-hit assets
A programme to refurbish Cromer Pier’s box office, gift shop and the restaurant following the significant damaged caused by December’s tidal surge will begin in early September 2014.
Work has been completed since the surge to make significant structural repairs to the areas underneath the box office, gift shop and the restaurant which will now allow for a full refurbishment programme of both facilities. These areas felt the full force of the storm as waves hit the sea wall and were propelled up underneath the structure.
The iconic, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) owned pier had already been the subject of extensive, £1.4million renovation and repair in the 18 months before the surge struck -work which potentially saved the structure from far greater damage.

Glyn Williams, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “The pier is a vital asset, not only for Cromer but for the whole of the North Norfolk area and helps to bring in visitors from all over the country.
“The significant capital investment in the pier structure helped to ensure that it survived the storm surge and all efforts are now focused on refurbishing those structures that are still out of action as quickly as possible while being mindful of the summer holiday season.”
The repair work will begin in early September to minimise disruption to visitors during the peak summer period and is expected to take eight weeks to complete. The pier will remain accessible for the duration of the works.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
The summer sun is still with us that is apart from the odd thunder storm and rain but this is an English summer so what else should we expect. Our Village Fair on 2nd August was a huge success and everyone at the White Horse sends their congratulations to the organising team. So as we find ourselves in the middle of August our thoughts have turned to Christmas! We are in the middle of planning our Christmas Menus, Party Nights and New Years Eve.
We aim to have all the details finalised so that we can print the menus and start the promotion in the next week or so. I know to many of you this sounds crazy as we still have hopefully weeks of good weather ahead of us but in order to be prepared we need to plane well in advance. Last year our Christmas Party Nights booked up very quickly so my advice is as soon as you can request a menu and booking form and make certain that you get the date you want. Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Friends of Holt Hall 2014/15: A new charity, a new bursary fund
The Friends of Holt Hall is a new Registered Charity and has been launched in North Norfolk to support work with young people, to promote their active engagement with the environment and to develop opportunities for their social and emotional wellbeing. Its charitable purposes are focussed on education and the environment, conservation and heritage, with a particular interest in accessibility to more disadvantaged groups of young people, including people with disabilities. The Bursary scheme will be managed as a designated fund in a dedicated account by The Friends of Holt Hall, administered by The Hon Treasurer.
The Friends of Holt Hall provide an important link between the local community and the Holt Hall Environmental & Outdoor Learning Centre. This is community leadership in action, helping the environmental education centre navigate the challenging economic climate and thus preserve a vital resource for us all in Norfolk.
Charities and community ventures need to set themselves a challenging mission: in the case of the Friends of Holt Hall, our mission is to support the learning, leisure opportunities and activities provided through Holt Hall; ensuring access for all.
To pursue this mission, the Friends announce the launch of a new Bursary Scheme to promote access to the full range of Holt Hall services for the most inclusive range of young beneficiaries.
The target for the Bursary Fund is to raise £5000 in each of the next three years as matched funding to facilitate access to outdoor learning in the natural world for young people. This should allow 6-10 additional students to participate in courses every week. The funds will be released to the Holt Hall Study Centre to fund access by as many young people as possible at the discretion of The Friends. Friends’ activities to date mean that this fund currently stands at £2,000. friendsofholthall@gmail.com
Too many young people in our country today have little opportunity to experience and learn from life outdoors and the natural world. Whilst Norfolk is a rural county, rich in its natural environment, there are several seriously disadvantaged wards in our city and our towns where young people have no access at all to
To pursue the target for £5000 in 2014/5, the Friends are exploring an active programme of fund-raising, including applications for relevant grants. These events are a chance for the whole community to get behind the valuable resource that is Holt Hall and contribute in modest but enjoyable ways. Membership of ‘Friends of Holt Hall’ is open to all and is a real opportunity to get involved as well as contribute to funds through a very modest subscription of £12 per year. There is also a very active volunteer community assisting in the gardens and grounds.
these experiences and opportunities. This is also true of areas across the whole of the Eastern Region.
We are very pleased to say we have now achieved Registered Charity status and the focus for our work at present is to raise money for these Student Bursaries. These have been set up to support as many students as possible to attend the centre to enhance their education and learning skills. These children are then able to benefit from the wonderful, enlightening and unique learning opportunities that we offer in these fantastic surroundings.
Holt Hall has much to offer young people in terms of high quality environmental

learning experiences, residential and day courses to schools, colleges and universities, but also helps young people to develop personally and socially. Its core programme of work with schools and students means over 3000 young people per year attend day and residential learning experiences in the natural world – experiences that they will never forget!

New to Cromer...LAUREN'S
I have come to Cromer, after managing a small sandwich shop in Wroxham for 3 years where my customers knew me for my warm and friendly service. The opportunity to open my own small business came along in Cromer during June. I have had it redecorated to give it a pleasant and inviting seaside theme and renamed it LAUREN'S. My emphasis is to supply freshly made to order Paninis, Baguettes and thickly sliced Sandwiches made with freshly baked bread with a good variety of delicious fillings. There is also good quality freshly ground coffee, tea and hot chocolate and a range of soft drinks available to eat in or take away. There will be the same warm and friendly welcome for all my customers and OAP specials will be on offer. I will be open all year round and during the winter months I will be offering a variety of hot dishes. I can also offer catering for office meetings, events and parties. Please call Lauren on 07799 395350 or email laurensplace@mail.com

Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS Club
When the Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS club met for their monthly lunch at The Links Hotel on 5 August, Chairman, Geoff Mather welcomed three guests who were interested in joining the club.
After the usual lunch, members and guests heard a fascinating and learned account from Dr Michael Bennett on the discovery of the Tunney Code used by the Germans during the war to communicate top secret information. Unlike the Enigma Code which was based on Morse code, the Tunney Code used teleprinter encryption and it is said that the work of the Bletchley Park Code Breakers in decrypting the Tunney Code changed the course of the war in Europe, saving many lives.
Probus Clubs exist throughout the country to enable retired professional and business gentlemen to meet and socialise. If you might be interest in joining Probus please telephone Club Secretary, Gordon Hatchett for further information on 01263 826881.

Britten Music Course Performs World Permiere
Gresham's International Britten Music Course finished on a high note when the 34 young musicians who attended the course, performed the world premiere of Patrick Hawes' Eventide in Norwich Cathedral on 12 July.
The piece, which was a community project jointly commissioned by Gresham's and Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society, also employed the forces of the world-renowned English Chamber Orchestra and acclaimed soprano Elin Manahan Thomas.
Conducted by Director of Music at Gresham’s Prep School, Nathan Waring and with an audience of over 700 people, the children rose to the occasion brilliantly. In addition, they performed a number of pieces including George Butterworth's Six Songs from Shropshire Lad with Tom Appleton (Monteverdi Choir and Gresham's Director of Music Outreach).
Eventide will receive its North Norfolk premiere on 8 November in St Peter's Church, Sheringham, when Gresham's will once again provide the children semi-chorus for Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society. Norfolk soprano Rosamund Walton will join the English Chamber Orchestra and the performance will be conducted by Nathan Waring.
IBMC pupils outside Norwich Cathedral and performing at the Cathedral on 12 July
Eventide was written to commemorate the nurse Edith Cavell, who helped more than 200 allied soldiers to escape German-occupied Belgium in WW1 and who is buried in Norwich Cathedral.

Also performed at the concert were two pieces by the late English composer Geoffrey Burgon,

Aylsham Celebrates Fab Food
Celebrating the fabulous food available in and around the town, Aylsham's annual Food Festival, presented by Slow Food Aylsham, returns in October for its 9th great year. Running from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 October, the Festival will feature a mixture of old favourites plus some new attractions to keep more than just the food fresh!
Chief among the innovations this year will be a visit from the London Vegetable Orchestra. Appearances on BBC TV, radio and ITV have ensured that the group's unique sounds are already known to a large audience. Crafting their instruments from a range of local vegetables, the Orchestra forms its brass section from courgettes, squashes and peppers, its wind instruments from carrots while percussion is provided from pumpkins. As Frank Skinner, presenter of the BBC's Room 101 commented "Health experts say you should listen to 5 of their songs a day!"
The London Vegetable Orchestra will be running introductory workshops at Aylsham High School on Saturday 27 September and on Food Festival Saturday, 4 October, they will be in the Market Place with workshops and a full scale performance at around 1pm. It's all free
but you do need to book for the September workshops at www.slowfoodaylsham.org.uk The Orchestra is being brought to Aylsham with the help of Creative Arts East, Norfolk County Council and Broadland District Council.
Food Festival Saturday will also see Aylsham's FARMAaccredited Farmers' Market offering fresh food, all sourced from with 30 miles of the town, plus street entertainment in the form of magicians from Davenports Magic Kingdom. There will be Family Cooking workshops in the Town Hall and just outside, cooking demonstrations by top local chefs. Jazz band One Foot in the Groove will be on hand to provide music and when they finish at around 11.30, there will be more musical entertainment before the closing performance by the London Vegetable Orchestra.
Elsewhere, the Festival will be offering a host of food-related activities, including Kids Cooking Workshops in the Parish Church on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 October. Friday morning will see special displays and tasters from the Country Market in the Town Hall and on Friday evening, students from Aylsham
High School will be presenting the renowned Gala Dinner with after dinner talk from Blickling Hall's 'Mary and Kath', the cook and scullery maid!
After all the excitement of Saturday, the 2014 Aylsham Food Festival will be bowing out with the legendary Big Slow Breakfast in Aylsham Town Hall. Members of Slow Food Aylsham and friends will be donning their aprons to cook up 'Full English' for 120 guests, including representatives from the county-wide Norfolk Food & Drink Festival. The Norfolk Festival runs from 30 August to 12 October and Aylsham Food Festival is proud to present its closing 'feature weekend'.
Aylsham Food Festival is established as one of the premier events in Aylsham's calendar. With the exception of the Dinner and Breakfast, the whole Festival is free for the entire community so there's no reason not to pop along, particularly on Saturday 4th when activities will start at around 9am, continuing until 2pm. You can find out more about Aylsham Food Festival at www.slowfoodaylsham.org.uk

Schoolgirls from north Norfolk have been given an unusual shopping list and sent into Norwich to shop ‘til they drop and snap up a few theatrical bargains.
Katie Thompson, 16, from Knapton, and Anna Page, 15, from Aylsham, have been rummaging on shelves and sorting through hangers in the city to find colourful clothing for this summer’s repertory theatre in Sheringham. The pair, who have been given a budget and a list for each character in the run, were invited to take on the shopping task after helping head of costumes Kathryn Flynn while on work experience last year. Cromer Preservation Society
On Thursday 4 September, the Cromer Preservation Society is to have an illustrated talk at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Garden Street, Cromer titled "The 1953 Floods". The speaker is the District Council's engineer, Brian Farrow. Brian has a great deal of knowledge about the 1953 storm and floods which devastated our coastline. As we had a similar storm in December 2013, this is an appropriate time to look again at what happened in 1953.
Our photo was taken on the day after the 1953 storm by local man George Baker, and shows the pier damaged by the high tides, and part of the sea wall missing. The pier had only recently been repaired after the damage caused during WW2!

The Northrepps ‘Poppyland’ branch of The Royal British Legion
Our Branch welcomed everyone to St. Mary's Church, Northrepps, on Sunday 3 August to the World War 1 Commemoration Service and Exhibition in honour of those brave men who left their families, friends, work and our village, never to return.
It was also an honour for us to welcome the deputy Lord Lieutenant Mr. Richard Butler MBE and guest, and Mr. Wyndham Northern our County Councillor, to join us. Councillor Mrs. Hilary Cox came along later in the day.
We also welcomed four pupils from Northrepps Primary School, Isla, Tabitha, Josh and Denny, who recited the poems that they had written, and also local singer/songwriter JackDaniel, who performed a song he had been inspired to write, about war and conflict during the service.
At the centre of our Exhibition was an individual tribute to each man named on our War Memorial, which gave details of their regiments and final resting place. Some of the families were able to exhibit momentoes, photographs etc. The pupils of Oak Class from Northrepps Primary School exhibited their art work, and we were also joined by that well known local Military Collector Mr. John Needham, Cromer Royal British Legion Chairman with his magnificent collection, amongst which was his iconic 1917 Vickers Machine Gun.
We were also able to give an account of life and times during the Great War, from old Parish Magazines, and some old photographs of 'harvest time' in the fields around our village.
All of our Branch members would like to say a 'huge thank you' to everyone in the village and indeed other counties, who have given us tremendous support, given their time, and donated a great deal to make this a truly memorable event, most importantly uniting the very young and elderly on the eve of the commemoration of the outbreak of the War that changed the world.

Not only is he a master of the modern digital organ, but his dress sense is - well, out of this world (!) and his earthy Derbyshire humour will have you in hoots of laughter as well - just don't sit in the front row if you are of a nervous disposition! Tim has a massive following in the UK as one of the foremost experts on the Roland digital organ. His programmes feature all types of music, from lush classics to catchy pops, delightful TV and film themes, stirring Marches, Big Band, Latin American - you name it, he plays it! The show will be at the Copeman Centre, Briston, NR24 2LG, on Friday 26 September starting at 7.30pm - doors open at 7pm. Pre-booking is essential for this amazing entertainer, and with tickets at just £6 - and accompanied under 16 year olds getting in ABSOLUTELY FREE (please mention this when you book your tickets) you are assured of a really great night of entertainment. candles were lit on our War Memorial, bringing our village together with villages, towns and cities, across the nation.
On Saturday August we were invited by Cromer Branch to join them, and we were able to exhibit a condensed version of our tribute in their exhibition. This was very important to be able to do this, as in those times there were many links between Cromer and the immediate surrounding villages. Our next Branch Meeting will be on 1 September at Northrepps Country Cottage Hotel at 7.30pm, and a warm welcome is extended to anyone who would like to come along and join The Royal British Legion. Prunella is absolutely divine, we all love her! Not only does she have THE most beautiful face and amazing eyes, she is the most loving dog and has a lovely temperament. She is desperate for you to speak to her when you go near her kennel and looks pleadingly at you with her beautiful soft eyes.
Prunella is an absolute cuddlemonster and loves to have her belly tickled. She is very keen to have a fuss from everyone, but looks very sad and desolate when anyone leaves the kennels, as if she thinks she might have been going with them, poor girl.
She has definitely been someone's dog, big shame on them for leaving her to fend for herself, when she has clearly loved someone, somewhere very much and has been well looked after as she looks to be in tip-top condition.
Prunella is around 18 months old, is fine with other dogs, although will want to have you all to herself at home please. She could live with the children aged 10+ and is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.
Prunella is absolutely desperate for a loving, forever home please and is broken-hearted to be alone and in kennels.

Peanut’s Parlour
North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
When people call Stephanie to report a “stray” cat she explains to them that it is important to make absolutely sure that the cat is homeless and that all efforts have been made to find the owner as they may be looking for their beloved pet. She advises them to take the cat to the vets to see if it has been micro chipped, to ask neighbours if they know the owner/cat, to put a notice in Socks now settled back home and a local shop (if there is one) sleeping on his owner’s bed! and to contact the Animal Search UK website (this can be done via the Lost and Found Page on our website) to record the cat being found. We will also send them paper collars to put on the cat and these often result in the owner being “found”. A recent instance regarding a cat in Cromer springs to mind. Hopefully this particular cat will soon be neutered to stop him straying and fighting.
In the same week a lady contacted us with regard to a stray which had taken up residence in her garden. This cat, which had been there for a few weeks, looked quite thin, and was eating the bird food off the lawn. She told us that she had already taken the cats to the vets but needed advice as to what else she could do to make sure there was no owner out there, before giving the cat a permanent home. On our advice she quickly produced a notice and placed it in the local shop, and contacted the Animal Search UK website who were only too willing to help. As she had not known of this website she decided to just have a look at the lost cats to see if her stray was listed and was amazed to see a cat on there that fitted the bill (easy to see, as the markings were the same and it had a bent tail, just like her stray). Contact was made with the owner via the website and Socks in now happily back in his own home having been missing for 4 months. How he arrived in North Walsham from Thorpe is something we will never know. It does however highlight the fact that the stray in your garden could be someone’s beloved pet and every effort should be made to find the owner.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit
www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham
for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Selbrigg and Baconsthorpe
It has been a good summer for wildlife on our local ponds. As well as the four cygnets that are still doing well on Selbrigg Pond, on the Mere at Baconsthorpe Castle a pair of mute swans have five cygnets that are looking very good indeed. Also there, moorhens have succeeded in bringing up a family, as have mallard ducks – there are probably others.
Returning to Selbrigg Pond, Mr Francis Feilden with support from the The five cygnets at Baconsthorpe with one of Norfolk Rivers Trust has their parents. Yes – there are five, but one of worked wonders with them takes a bit of looking for! this lovely stretch of spring-fed water. After the dam wall was renovated, the land beside it was levelled with topsoil and sown with grass seed (first phase done – next phase no doubt soon) and the bank planted with a mixed hedge where wild flowers have sprung up. The fishermen say the condition of the fish is first class, and the two grey herons and the occasional kingfisher echo that opinion!

More controversial are the revived plans to erect a wind turbine on Mr Feilden’s land where it rises to the north of the pond. Mr Feilden says that he withdrew the previous Planning Application due to problems concerned with Air Defence Radar and queries from Norfolk County Council, which have both been satisfied. It is no secret that a number of local residents were strongly opposed to the proposal, so it appears that the argument has still some way to run!

Online electoral registration available for the first time
North Norfolk residents will be sent a letter from their Electoral Registration Officer this month informing them of a change to the electoral registration system.
Cafe and Take Away 28 Garden Street, Cromer 01263 515060
As part of a nationwide initiative to help reduce electoral fraud and improve accountability, the government has launched the Individual Electoral Registration system (IER), which makes every eligible voter responsible for registering themselves to vote.
Breakfasts, Snacks, Main Meals, Baguettes & Much More Served All Day 5 Star Hygiene Rating Open 7 Days a Week
Previously each household across the UK received a single form asking for details of all eligible voters within the property, but this will now be replaced by the new system which means the Council has to write to every voter individually.
For the vast majority of eligible voters, they will not need to do anything as they will have automatically have had their details transferred from the old system to the new one.
Sheila Oxtoby, Electoral Registration Officer for North Norfolk, said “Most residents will receive a letter from the elections team to tell them that they have automatically moved onto the new registration system. However, some residents will be told that they need to provide extra information in order to register under the new system. It’s important that they now do this, which can be done at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. “This is the first time that people can register to vote online and it’s quick and simple. So, if you’ve just turned 18 or you’ve not registered before, you can now get online to register to vote.”

This is the first impression you have when you drive the Nissan Leaf - their 100% electric car, writes Pete Smewin, the Cromer Times’ own Jeremy Clarkson.
I had the opportunity to test drive a brand new Leaf Accenta 5dr automatic supplied by Crayford & Abbs Ltd at Bodham.
It was extremely well appointed with very comfortable interior and impressive dashboard. It drove exceptionally well aided by impressive but easy-to-use controls. Reversing was also a revelation with the aid of a colour reversing
camera; something I had never used before but found was very helpful. The Leaf benefits by giving the owner low cost fuel coverage from just 2p a mile and exemption from paying Road Tax - now that is a saving!

Norfolk MPs and business leaders hold Summer Tourism Summit
Earlier this month Norfolk MPs heard from businesses about the work that is going on across the county to market Norfolk as a tourist destination.
A group of Norfolk MPs met with business leaders from across North Norfolk, and representatives from Visit East Anglia and New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).
Commenting afterwards, Norman Lamb said “Four years ago, Liberal Democrats decided to go into Coalition Government in order to tackle the crippling financial legacy left by the previous government, and get our economy back on track. Over the past four years, we have really seen people’s confidence return in the British economy, and that is reflected in falling unemployment, and record numbers of new business start-ups – more than 380,000 new businesses across the country last year. “We now have to do everything we can to ensure that the benefits of the recovery are felt here in North Norfolk. Everything we heard today was incredibly encouraging, and I look forward to working with other Norfolk MPs over the coming months to support the efforts to promote Norfolk’s unique appeal as a tourist destination. Improving transport links from Norfolk to other parts of the country, protecting our valuable coastline, and supporting high streets in our towns, all have a key part to play.”
Norwich South MP Simon Wright added “The natural beauty of Norfolk, together with Norwich’s heritage and retail offer, brings huge benefits to all of us. More than 50,000 Norfolk jobs are linked to tourism. It’s the largest sector of our local economy, worth billions of pounds every year. The A11 dualling is a big step forward, and we need investment in our other transport links so that more people can visit and bring their spending power to Norfolk. It was really encouraging to meet with Visit East Anglia and local employers to hear of their success in promoting tourism in the county.”

Sheringham BeachLife mission prepares for bumper crowds
The BeachLife activity outreach for children and young people will take place on Sheringham sea-front at the end of this month. The mission will build on the success of the last two years, and the organisers are gearing up for a bumper attendance again this year.
about God. We cannot guarantee a repeat of last year’s glorious sunshine, but we can offer an exciting fun-packed week in which the youngsters get the opportunity to discover what a difference Jesus can bring to their lives.”
The four days of fun packed activity will be taking place from August 26 to 29 and the event is open to all, from toddlers up to age 17, but those younger than reception year should be accompanied by an adult. Activities will include sports, drama, creative bible teaching, crafts, beach games, inflatables, and a bouldering wall. The theme this year will be “Meeting Jesus”.
Visit www.sheringhambeachlife.co.uk for more information, or to download a registration form, which you can print, fill in, and bring with you on the first day.
The fun will start at 10.30am each day with the “Beach Special”, where all ages will come together at the cliff-top marquee at The Leas on the Esplanade for music, games, drama and laughter, and to introduce the day’s theme. The children and young people will then split into age-groups for their “Going Deeper” to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch.
The afternoons will consist of beach games, team challenges and competitions, and a bouldering wall on the Thursday. The fun will conclude on the Friday with a carnival-themed afternoon and barbecue on the Leas, with music and circus skills. Last year’s finale attracted over 150 children and young people on the Friday afternoon, and the Leas resounded with laughter as they enjoyed circus activities, stocks, plate-spinning, sumo-wrestling, space-hoppers, and a bouncy castle.
Evening activities from 6pm for over-8s will include a family Tide Fight on the beach on the Wednesday, and a photo trail on the Thursday. Over 11s will also enjoy a quiz from 7pm on the Tuesday, as well as the “Sheropoly” competition around the town on the Thursday from 7pm.

The 2014 North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival, one of the region’s premier local produce events will take place at Holkham Hall on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August.
This flagship “foodie” event kicks off the county-wide Norfolk Food and Drink Festival 2014 which takes place throughout September and early October.
Now in its fifth year, the Festival will take place, as usual, at Holkham Hall, by kind permission of Viscount and Viscountess Coke.

Win A Year’s Supply Of Sausages
Despite being a butcher for over 30 years Icarus Hines will be the new kid on the block when it comes to this years Battle of the Bangers.
It’s the 10th anniversary of the event held at the forum in Norwich and Icarus although very much looking forward to the competition has a problem to overcome.
“I need some help from the public to choose which flavour to enter. I can submit 1 variety but I’m not sure which of my 4 traditional style to choose. People can help me by voting for their favourite via my Facebook page. In return 1 lucky person will win a year’s supply of sausages.” said Icarus in his appeal for help. You can also support Icarus on the day of the cook-off by getting down to the Forum in Norwich on Saturday 6th September where breakfast or lunch will be supplied free of charge. The day starts at 9:30am with the winner being announced at 4pm.
More details can be found at
www.norfolkfoodanddrinkfestival.co.uk
and, more importantly, you can vote for your favourite Icarus Hines sausage at
www.facebook.com/george.butcher.501
or search Icarus Hines on Facebook. Terms & Conditions apply.
With an impressive 10,000 visitors last year the organisers have signed up over 60 stall holders to gather for the two day food and drink celebration.
The range of produce on sale will include real ales, fresh meat and poultry, North Norfolk seafood, vegetables, local honey and saffron, cakes, pies, puddings and tarts, fruit, ice cream, cheeses, fresh juices and much more. Visitors will also benefit from all of the things to see and do at Holkham Hall. Following its successful introduction in 2012 the festival will continue to offer a food-court area providing everyone with outstanding local food and drink for consumption on site. The seven concessions will include Arthur Howell’s hog roast, sausages by award winning Fruit Pig Co. and ale by Jo C’s brewery to name but three. Children’s activities include face painting, cooking up “boggle food” with BeWilderwood on stage plus Holkham’s Woodland Play Area.
All weekend, in its trade-mark octagonal tent, the hugely popular Cookery Theatre will see demonstrations from this year’s wonderfully eclectic line-up. Full details of the cookery theatre timetable will be published in August. Led as usual by Norfolk farmhouse food guru Mary Kemp, this year’s theatre will inspire and entertain audiences of all ages.
For the fourth year running the organisers are delighted to announce that Kettle Foods, producer of KETTLE® Chips, is pleased to be the headline sponsor of the North Norfolk Food & Drink Festival. In addition, Kettle Foods is once again offering a business mentoring prize of £1000 to one of the attending stall holders. Chairman, Chris Coubrough of The Flying Kiwi Inns said “we are delighted to be working in partnership again with this nationally recognised and respected local company”.
Dominic Lowe, Kettle Foods MD says "The reason we enjoy the North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival so much is that it exists to support businesses very similar to how Kettle Foods was 25 years ago: small, entrepreneurial, trying something really different but passionate about the quality of the food they make. As such the Festival is a reminder of our roots and we are very proud to sponsor this event and recognise another up and coming business through our mentoring scheme.”
The North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival is organised by a Festival Committee. Gates open at 10am and close at 5pm each day. Entry to the festival is free but a car park charge of £2.50 applies (redeemable on purchases of £10 or more in the gift shop at Holkham Hall).

Obituary
Alan Woods 19.2.1949 – 15.7.2014
Many of our readers will remember the previous publisher, Alan Woods who retired in April 2012 when the papers were taken over by Eric Hayton of Rose Villa Publications, writes Margaret White.
Alan sadly passed away last month.
I started working with Alan in 2002. At that time the papers needed a bit of a makeover and together we embarked on a journey which was fun, interesting and hard work, especially in the early days!
Alan had been involved with the papers long before I came on the scene and his love for them and commitment to them never changed, right up to his retirement when he was pleased to see them continuing through the new publisher. It was nothing for him to work through the night on a deadline day to get them ready to go to the printers the next day to ensure everybody’s schedule was met.
A few years down the line Alan’s wife Linda and daughter Sharon joined our little team and they all became friends, not just work colleagues.
Alan had a dry sense of humour and loved nothing more than a ‘wind up’. Luckily after a while I was able to realise (most of the time!) when he was indulging in this - but not before he caught me out on several occasions! It was very difficult to catch him out in return but I do remember one such occasion when I emailed him my resignation with immediate effect at 8am on a busy deadline day. I then avoided his telephone calls and emails until 12 noon when it gave me the greatest pleasure to answer his umpteenth phone call with the words ‘April Fool’ – he had totally forgotten the date!!
On another occasion I had been teasing Alan about him supplying me with a company car. After a few weeks he turned up one afternoon with my company vehicle, complete with signwriting – the fact that it was about six inches long, in a cardboard box and had a petrol consumption to die for just showed his humour! I still have my Matchbox car in pride of place on my desk and it remains very economical on petrol!
Alan had the proverbial ‘heart of gold’. My girls never went off on a family holiday without an envelope from Alan with some spending money in it. He would do anything for anyone, always willing to help out whenever he could.
I could go on and on but I hope this gives you a taste of what it was like to work with Alan and the relationship we built up – he called us ‘the A team’.
Along with everybody else at Rose Villa Publications I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to his widow Linda, daughter Sharon and family on their loss.
And on a more personal note I would like to salute the man I affectionately called ‘Boss’.
Margaret

Two issues ago we congratulated Janet Morton and Chrissie Laskey who will be playing in the Bowls England Pairs National Finals at Royal Leamington Spa this month. Now we have to congratulate Chrissie again as she will be representing Norfolk as the County Ladies Singles Champion of the English Bowling Federation at their Finals being held at Skegness this month. She will be joined by Roger Greef as the Norfolk Federation Champion of Champions and also Bill Starkey who will be playing in the Norfolk Federation ‘Newton’ team, that won their Southern Inter-County League, against Durham who are the Northern Champions, for the overall National Newton trophy. So we wish them all well in their respective competitions. So good to see Cromer being represented on the National stage. The club teams in the County Federation leagues have now completed all their games. The Crabs had an excellent result at home to Fakenham ’B’ by winning 7-2. That was enough to see the team win their League so many congratulations to John Andreae and his team. The team then had a Play-Off for the Nicholson Shield against Wootton Park. The opponents proved too strong on this occasion but the club is delighted that again the team have brought home the League trophy to the club. The Crows final game of the season was against Trunch and despite a gallant performance they lost 2-7. The NANSA team completed their season with a 6-2 win at home against Suffield Park, but in a very close game at Cawston they lost 0-8. The points score does not always reflect how close the actual game was on the green. President Bernice made a change this season for the annual game for the President’s Rose Bowl. She invited the gentlemen of the club to take part in a pairs competition. Names were drawn out, one man, one lady and those mixed pairs had a series of games against each other. The overall best score for the lady was declared the winner. After the games were completed scones, with jam and cream were provided together with some ‘drop’ scones with fruit and honey [thanks Jack, good try] with tea, coffee or something alcoholic if that was your choice. The winner was declared to be Janet Morton and she was presented with the trophy by her playing partner John much to the amusement of the other players. The raffle that followed together with a small contribution from each player towards the refreshments amounted to £127.50 and this amount was contributed to the President’s Charity which this year is Papworth Hospital.
At the beginning of next month, September, yes we are nearly there already, the club entertain a men’s Touring Team from Bedfordshire led by their Men’s County President Ken Burr. We are delighted that the Tourists have agree to visit Cromer and look forward to a good competitive game on the day.
And so to the list of the matches being played on the green that you may wish to come and watch, and support.
