The David Northway Memorial Train
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
Friends, relatives, and past customers of David and Mary Northway will be warmly welcomed onboard the David Northway Special train, which will be running on the North Norfolk Railway between Holt and Sheringham on Saturday 22 November.
Mary Northway says that the train will be an opportunity for a get together to remember David. "David was well known as a hotelier in Overstrand, and publican in Northrepps, where he ran the Parsons Pleasure. David died a year ago, and to be able to gather friends and relatives together for a train ride - which David always loved - will be a great way to remember him, and to see familiar faces. It'll be a lovely trip to see scenery, to socialise or just do some shopping with an added train trip."
There is no charge for the return trips - friends can join the train at Holt or Sheringham, and there will be a collection for the Targeted Radiotherapy Appeal for the Norfolk and Norwich hospital. There is ample parking at Holt station, and departure
times for the B12-hauled train will be from Holt 09.55, 11.41, 13.04 and 14.41. Departure times for passengers wishing to join the train at Sheringham are 10.50, 12.27, 13.50 and 15.25. A buffet carriage will be available for refreshments.
For further information, please contact Mary on 01263 513835, or Mark Northway on 01263 711811.

Cromer Times 457 November 8th 2014
Cromer welcomes a new Model Shop
Buoys Toys & Models, opened in July, and is located opposite the Tourist Information Centre and specialises in modelling supplies and accessories.
Dave Medhurst, a modeller himself, wanted to create an olde worlde Dickensian style toy shop with small-paned windows, subdued lighting, beams and plenty of nooks and crannies. The shop goes much of the way to realising his vision with stock spilling across four rooms. It does thankfully fall short of recreating any of the dirt, dust and cobwebs associated with shops of that time!
There are plenty of materials for modellers such as woods, plastics and metals, and these rub shoulders with scenics, paints, fillers, glues, small electrical components and other odds and ends that you didn’t even know you needed! If you’re a collector then it might be worth taking a peek in the display cabinets that house a varied selection of diecast models. The shop has an underlying creative theme so you’ll find a whole host of kits and bits to suit many tastes. There is also a small developing shop-themed dollshouse section and a range of miniature hardware items, such as screws, hinges and clasps, for many a craft project.
So if you enjoy creative hobbies, or are simply looking for that special gift, then they may have just the thing for you. The shop is all about face-to-face sales, hence there’s currently no website, so you’ll need to pop in for a browse! You can however keep an eye on shop developments via Facebook (buoystoysandmodels) and for more day-to-day information Twitter (BuoysToysCromer).
Roughton Playgroup Celebrates 20th Birthday
On Wednesday 22 October, Roughton under 5s playgroup celebrated 20 years since opening. They held a special celebration party and welcomed past and present children, parents and staff. There was a buzz of excitement amongst the children tucking into the party food and a special cake with the playgroup logo was made by one of the mums and committee member Louise Laurence.
A photo board was also on display showing pictures and photos of activities the playgroup has been involved in over the last 20 years including sports days, school trips and teddy bear picnics.
For 20 years Roughton Under 5s Playgroup has been providing a happy and stimulating environment for the children of Roughton and the surrounding area. The Playgroup provides quality care and early education to children aged 2 to school age.
If you would like any more information on the playgroup please visit the website www.roughtonunder5s.co.uk

where teenagers can chill out and have fun) and The Garage (a creative industries, training and performance venue). The arts forms that were used were singing, dancing and people playing musical instruments.
My favourite part was when Jess Butcher sang and when the Glamps performed (they were a band). I really liked Jess because she has an amazing voice and is just a really great singer. I think the Glamps are great because they played really well and they’ve even written a few of their own songs. There wasn’t anything I didn’t like, the night was really great. We’re now working on planning another one!

Pan-seared Venison Loin
We’ve been having a fantastically busy autumn here at The Grove, helped by the gorgeous weather of course. It’s been good to see the Grove pheasants back in full plumage and introducing their latest generation to us here (they are strictly off-limits to the kitchen staff though!)
Ingredients 650g centre cut loin (Icarus will do this for you) 3 to 4 sprigs of rosemary leaves (chopped) 1 tsp black pepper Salt 2 tsp vegetable oil For the jus 250ml red wine 4 tbsp butter 4 tbsp plain flour Salt and pepper
The Autumn Menu has been a real success and our wild Norfolk venison has been flying off the pass. There is a family of red deer haunting Cromer; they are hardly ever seen but on the odd occasion the big stag will make an appearance on the front lawn – no-one has been quick enough to get a picture yet but hopefully one day he will stand still long enough…
Please do come in and see us for dinner and don’t forget we are taking bookings for Christmas parties - private dining for up to 35 people.
■ Pre-heat the oven to 200c or gas mark 6 ■ Trim any sinew from the venison, rub the loin in oil and roll in the rosemary and pepper ■ Heat a large heavy-based frying pan and sear the loin for a couple of minutes; turn and sear the underside and both ends. ■ Place the venison on a roasting tin and put in the oven for 10-12 minutes (rare) or a little longer depending on taste. ■ Remove and rest for 10 minutes.
Jus ■ Mix the flour and softened butter together to make a buerre manie. Heat the pan on the hob and add the red wine to deglaze, then reduce for ten minutes. ■ Add a teaspoon or two of the buerre manie or red wine to thicken. To serve slice the venison into ½ inch thick medallions and drizzle over the jus.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY
It has been a busy autumn so far for society members. Our autumn show was well supported and with more entries than last year it shows how much a favourable run of weather can affect the activities of a society such as ours. Derek Pardon won best in section for flowers with his stunning chrysanthemums (how often have we said that in the past?) and Jenny Pawson’s display was best in the vegetable section. At our October meeting we heard from Jaime Blake who spoke to us about the life and career of his father-in-law Alan Bloom. This well known Norfolk figure began his career in Cambridgeshire and after a spell in Sussex he moved to Bressingham in 1946 and it is here that he stayed (apart from a brief spell in Canada) until his death. By the mid 1950s Alan Bloom had created the island beds for which his garden is famous and soon the business was
a major nursery supplier. Over 4,500 different plants were on display. If you add in the 30 books written by Alan Bloom, his contribution to the work of the Hardy Plant Society (he was awarded the Veitch Medal for his efforts) and the development of the two and a half mile track on which he ran the many steam locomotives in his collection it is clear that he was a considerable figure in the horticultural and leisure worlds. Alan’s son Adrian developed the retail side of the business and supported their chief hybridiser, Percy Piper, in developing new plant varieties including crocosmia “Lucifer” and the agapanthus “Isis”. The winner of our competition for schools was Kelling Primary and the judges were pleased to visit the school just before half term to present them with their prize. The organiser of the competition, John Spittles, planted a mountain ash in the grounds of the school. The tree

was donated by the society’s president, Bill LeGrice. Well done to all those at Kelling Primary for their hard work.
Our next meeting on 12 November at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer and combines our AGM with a talk by Caroline Spinks on the work of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. All are welcome. Cost £2 to non-members.
CROMER FLOWER CLUB
In October we had a lovely meeting when Lynda Harmon entertained us with ‘A Crafty Flower Arranger’.
Most of Lynda’s containers were handmade and enhanced by many beautiful blooms creating pleasing arrangements. A few were lucky enough to win an arrangement in the raffle.
There were 11 entries in the competition entitled ‘A Woodland Arrangement’ with advanced arranger Noreen Hawes being best in show.
Our next meeting is on Monday 17 November at 7.30pm at Cromer Junior School when Crystal Dyball will present ‘Merry Christmas’. Visitors are always welcome.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Duchess, the little kitten mentioned last time, is making satisfactory progress and like so many of the kittens in care, will soon be old enough to be available for adoption.
Kittens continue to arrive, while others wait patiently for a pen to become available. At the last count we noted that 120 kittens have been handed into care this year. If only people would get their cats neutered we would not be experiencing the problems that we are seeing this year. Many have joined us because their original owners have, in effect, abandoned their mother once she has become pregnant. Cats like the dear little one, probably less than a year old, we have recently returned to the area she originated from as she was traumatised being confined to one of our pens. Fortunately, she has been entrusted to the care of a young lady who is experienced with feral cats and willing to see if she will respond to receiving care having been given more space. If she is not happy living in a home environment she will support her living outside. Her kittens are still in care, although one has already been offered a home. Although three of these kittens have “webbed” paws, probably due to inbreeding, this will not make any difference to the lives they will lead.
If is fortunate that we had made arrangement for this little cat as Stephanie had a call from vets with regard to two four month old kittens which had been abandoned in a box by the side of the road. From their condition when taken to the vets it was apparent they had been there at least two days as they were ravenous and very thirsty, even trying to drink the water the vets were using to rinse them down after bathing them. Having so many kittens arrive as emergencies like does mean that our waiting list which contains cats that need to come into care (and also kittens who have people looking after them in the meantime) are still out there waiting for a space to become available.

Yes to Storage and Rental
These days we all appear to be acquiring more and more, yet are reluctant to part with anything, just in case it may be useful in the future. More of us living in flats and apartments, and houses seem to be getting smaller, so storage becomes a problem, but not any longer. You will all have seen the “Yes” Self-drive, rental vans in and around Cromer, well now, as well as being able to help you move your items, “Yes” can store them for you.
Situated at the old Coredale Garage site on Middlebrook Way in Cromer, “Yes” Self Storage Solutions have converted the huge warehouse at the rear of the rental firm’s showroom into individual “self-storage” units. These can be rented for any period from a week to a year, or longer if required. The units range in size from just 20sq ft to over 100sq ft. Each room is constructed from box-profile steel sheeting with a single steel door. These provide a high degree of security and the occupier of each room will have the only key to their unit.
Stored goods will be in a dry, secure, vermin-free environment, with access at any reasonable time. The rooms are available to both private individuals, for the storage of furniture and personal effects etc., and also to local businesses, who may need temporary storage for out of season, or excess stock etc., when space at their own premises is at a premium.
The “Yes” Car and Van Rental business, which now has a fleet of over 35 vehicles, began from nothing in 2007 and has grown into a substantial local business which is often assumed to be the local branch of a national company. The business is still privately owned and operated by father and son team Neil and Patrick Moody. Their professional approach has resulted in the firm being accepted as a member of the United Rental Group which links over 500 independent hire firms into a powerful force within the British self-drive rental industry. This alliance with United Rentals allows “Yes” to continually update their rental fleet with new models in order to maintain a modern, reliable fleet of vehicles. The expansion into self-storage will see the companies grow even more rapidly over the coming years and it is a testament to their continued confidence in North Norfolk and Cromer in particular.

Volunteer says opportunity changed her life
A Norfolk woman has described how agreeing to become a volunteer has changed her life and got her back into work for the first time in more than four years.
Tina Monger, 20, had struggled to find a job she enjoyed ever since leaving school when she agreed to become a volunteer for North Norfolk Community Transport (NNCT), a charity providing a vital lifeline for people without access to transport.
Ms Monger, who lives in North Walsham, has a varied role as a passenger assistant, which includes assisting people with disabilities and children with special needs.

Cromer Carnival celebrates another successful year
On Friday 26 September Cromer Voluntary Entertainments Organisation held their annual presentation evening to mark the end of year’s Carnival and to celebrate all the participants and winners who made the Carnival such a success.
Hosted by Chairman Tony Shipp, the event, which was held at The Cottage in Cromer, brought together many of the people who organise the Carnival as well as those who took part in many of the 120 events that formed the 2014 event.
Tony Shipp welcomed everyone to the evening before saying “I would like to congratulate everyone who is here to receive an award and thank all who took part in this year’s 45th Cromer Carnival. Without you and your support there would not be a carnival.”
He added “overall this year has been a very good year, from the Stand on the Sand challenge set by Sheringham Carnival to the return of the Red Arrows, who gave us one of the best displays seen in Cromer for many years. The Fireworks were the best seen to date and the Fancy Dress was a sell out success.”
From Carnival Darts to the Waiters and Waitresses Race and the Children’s Talent Competition to the Wednesday Parade there was a whole host of competitions celebrated
The award for the winner of Class 6 in the parade (Vintage Vehicles and bikes) was picked up on the night by A60 Austin taxi owner Derek Bond. Mr Bond who lives in Cambridgeshire had travelled over 70 miles to pick up the trophy. Mr Bond said “it’s the second time I have won this class, Cromer Carnival is the only carnival I enter the taxi in, it is the icing on the cake to win.”

and awards given. The awards were handed out by Carnival Prince Sol Rivett and Junior Attendants Tasmin Beshir and Allyse Cook.
Many of the winners from this year’s Carnival Parade were present to pick up their awards including long time participants in the parade, Cromer Parish Church. Winners of Class 1 (Articulated lorries), the Church were also winners of the Spirit of Carnival award and Overall Winner of the parade for their pirate ship float. Dennis Broughton, who has been helping with the Church’s carnival float for 22 years said “we do it because we enjoy it and it’s great to represent the church in the town. It’s a real accolade this year to win the Overall Winner trophy and we’ll be back next year to compete with everyone again!”
Anyone involved in tourism?
Do you provide B & B or Self-catering accommodation? Do you have a café or restaurant? Do you sell mementoes? Do you run attractions or provide services?
A group of volunteers produces an annual B & B and Self-catering Guide for North Walsham and North East Norfolk, and it also has space for those advertising other visitor services. Up to 2,500 copies are distributed widely through the visitor advice centres in Cromer, Mundesley and North Walsham, through libraries, at the attractions, village shops and so on. It is also in demand by local people who need accommodation for family events. Because it is produced through voluntary effort, supported by North Walsham Town Council, advertising rates are low : £35 for accommodation providers, and £35 or more for other advertisers according to the space they require.
The 2015 edition is now being prepared. If you are interested in joining us, or would like to see a 2014 copy, you need to act quickly! Phone 01692 404114 in the mornings from 9.30 a.m., or email us at admin.@northwalsham-town.co.uk

Representatives from The Dunstable Arms in Sheringham were also present on the night to pick up The Henry Levine Cup. The pub whose Noah’s Ark float won Class 3 (Towed trailers & any vehicle) were delighted with their win. They said “we also won the cup for best pub & club float in Sheringham’s carnival procession, it’s the third year in a row we have won at both carnivals! We do it because it has now become a tradition for the pub.”
Tony Shipp closed the evening by thanking those who took part in this year’s Carnival and those present on the night for continuing to support the Carnival’s events.
The presentation evening marked the last event in the Carnival’s summer calendar before the VEO hosts the Senior Citizens Christmas Concert on 9th December.
To keep up to date with all the Carnival events throughout the year please visit the Carnival website at www.cromercarnival.co.uk. Next year’s Carnival will take place Saturday 15 – Friday 21 August 2015 with Carnival Day on Wednesday 19 August.

No Will Power
Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr Are you amongst the two-thirds of people who risk dying intestate?
New rules are to apply to the estates of those who die without a Will. To die without a valid Will is to be ‘intestate’. The Inheritance and Trustees’ Powers Act 2014 is now on the statute book and became law on 1st October 2014.
The position until October, where the deceased person dies intestate and leaves an estate worth more than £450,000, and is survived by a spouse/civil partner but where there are no children, is as follows: the survivor receives the ‘personal chattels’ (i.e. household furniture and other contents, car, jewellery, etc) but shares the remaining estate with the deceased’s parents. The spouse/civil partners gets £450,000 and half the balance, with the other half of the balance going to the parents equally. If there are no parents alive, the deceased’s siblings or their children take. The new rules give the spouse/civil partner in such circumstances 100% of the rest; which is thought to be much closer to the wish of the majority.
Where the intestate was married (or in a civil partnership) and had children, the current rules are complex and involve trusts. Here the spouse/civil partner takes the chattels and the first £250,000. The balance is split into equal
shares. One half passes to the children but is held on ‘statutory trusts’ until they reach 18, which contain old fashioned and inflexible provisions. The other half passes into a lifeinterest trust which allows the spouse only income arising and no right to the capital. The new rules still allow for half the residue over the £250,000 to go to the children but now the other 50% goes entirely to the surviving spouse, without the complexity and restriction of a life interest trust.
The £250,000 ‘statutory legacy’ passing to the survivor is now to be increased each five years in line with inflation in line with the Consumer Prices Index. It last rose in 2008.
Whilst these new measures certainly simplify matters, the best defence is to avoid intestacy altogether. Failure to leave a valid, up-to-date Will causes headaches for the family of the deceased. Not only do assets pass to people that the deceased would not have wished, but an intestate estate invariably takes longer to administer.
And for those people who are unmarried (or not in a civil partnership) and have no family, or only unknown and distant family, the situation can be particularly dire. If you
have no children, parents, siblings, nephews, nieces, grandparents, uncles, aunts or first cousins then without a will your estate will be what is called ‘Bona Vacantia’, which means that all your money will go to the state…….and you know how well they spend our money!

Cromer coast protection work re-starts
The second phase of the £8m ‘Cromer Coast Protection’ scheme has started. Work will take place on the seafront from October to March 2015.
The scheme has been designed not only to maintain the existing level of defence, but also to withstand many years of predicted sea level rise.
The sea defences at Cromer protect the town from the force of the North Sea. They were built in various phases as the town expanded, the earliest dating back to 1836. Over the years, the walls and groynes have withstood many storms and have been maintained, enhanced and repaired as and when required. The coast protection scheme will reduce the impact of the sea along the Cromer frontage as well as helping to maintain a stable beach in front of the seawalls for future years. The historical significance of some of the structures has been carefully taken in to consideration and the overall character of the promenade should not change.
The Cromer Coast Protection Project has been chosen by the Institute of Chartered Engineers (ICE) to be part of its ‘This is Engineering’ campaign. The campaign has been designed to bring together construction projects across the uK to show how civil engineers shape the world around and also aims to encourage young people to consider a career in engineering.
Pedestrian access to the Pier will remain during the work, and signage will be installed to direct visitors away from work areas when required. Cromer will remain open for business and the engineering operations are a spectacle that can be viewed from many cliff top vantage points. Work will not be carried out for two weeks over the Christmas holiday period.
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Cabinet Member for Coastal Management, Angie Fitch-Tillett said “I am delighted that we were able to complete significant repairs immediately after last December’s storm surge, and the work we are undertaking now will protect Cromer, its residents, its businesses and its visitors for many years to come.
“Right through the work Cromer will be very much open for business and I am sure many people will be interested in having a look at this major engineering scheme.” As vehicle access will be limited during the course of the works a discounted taxi service will be offered for the audience of this year’s Cromer Christmas Show from the town centre. Visitors to the show who would normally use the disabled car park will be able to collect a temporary car park pass for the promenade from the Box Office when they collect their show tickets The Cromer Christmas Show opens on Saturday 29 November and runs until 27 December. Cromer Pier General Manager Rebecca Wass said, “It’s business as usual on Cromer Pier. Our temporary Box Office at the entrance to the pier is open daily for customers to purchase tickets to all our shows. We are looking forward to a busy Christmas period and are grateful to North Norfolk District Council and their contractors for their assistance and understanding so that we can say in true showbiz fashion, “The show will go on!”.

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has announced it is to become a Dementia Friendly Council.
Working in partnership with the Norfolk Dementia Friendly Alliance, the Council will be delivering awareness training to staff to enable them to understand dementia and the issues that face sufferers of dementia and their families and carers.
Steps will be taken to support NNDC’s market towns, alongside Town Councils, to build communities which are dementia-friendly and to provide an opportunity to support dementia sufferers in managing their day to day life.
North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, John Lee said: “Dementia can have a devastating effect on those with the disorder and their families who are often carers. The chance of developing dementia increases significantly with age; as a District we have one of the oldest populations in the country so it’s vital that we work together with our local communities to create a positive environment that makes day to day life easier to manage.
“People with dementia face many challenges and negative experiences going about their daily lives and it’s important that we act and make positive changes to ensure they are not isolated and without support ”.
The Council will reviewing its Health Improvement Strategy which sets out the vital role it plays in reducing health inequalities and improving health for residents with a focus on preventative activity. The Strategy will also consider ways in which the Council shapes its services to provide better health outcomes across the District.

Prospective councillors enjoy a date with a difference
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) welcomed 24 prospective councillors to its ‘candi-dating’ event last month.
Members of the public were invited to find out what being a councillor involves and to learn about how the council works ahead of the District Council elections on Thursday 7 May 2015.
with 22 existing councillors. The prospective candidates had the opportunity to chat to each of the councillors about key elements of the role and in more detail about different service areas of the Council, including housing, planning, licensing, economic development and environment.
The event was devised with cross-party support as part of a drive to attract a wide variety of people to stand for election in May 2015.
“The speed-dating session format worked well and gave each prospective candidate an opportunity to chat with existing councillors. I am confident they left with plenty of information about what the role entails and hopefully with even more enthusiasm to stand as a councillor in next year’s elections.”
The next elections for all 48 seats (representing 34 wards) on North Norfolk District Council will take place on Thursday 7 May 2015.
The would-be councillors heard a presentation from NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick. Cllr. FitzPatrick outlined how local government works and what prospective candidates can expect from the role, ranging from representing communities and giving a voice to local people to making decisions about council services. The group enjoyed a ‘speed-dating’ session
Chairman of NNDC’s Member Development Group and Cabinet Member, Glyn Williams said, “I was delighted to see so many people with different skills and from different backgrounds showing such enthusiasm for a challenging, but immensely rewarding role.
If you would like further information about becoming a councillor, please contact Emma Denny on 01263 516010 or email emma.denny@north-norfolk.gov.uk
The North Norfolk Labour Party is calling on the national party to adopt a policy that would lead to a cut in VAT for the tourism industry and consequently deliver a boost for jobs in the region.
in the UK will soon be the highest in the EU. A cut from the 20pc rate would create more jobs and bring thousands more people to our vibrant towns and villages. I am pushing the Labour leadership to adopt this as policy.”
The proposal has had some discussion in the House of Commons already with Labour’s Deputy Leader Harriet Harman saying she would look further into it.
North Norfolk Labour call for Tourism VAT cut
Denise Burke, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, believes that the government needs to do more to help local businesses in coastal communities and that a cut in VAT would spur on investment in North Norfolk towns like Wells, Sheringham, and Cromer as well as rural areas too.
She said “Tourism is essential to North Norfolk and yet VAT on accommodation and attractions
Denise Burke at Labour Party conference supporting the campaign
Speaking in the House of Commons she also criticised the lack of action from government, and argued “People want to know where jobs are going to come from and how we are going to pay our way, and the answer in very large part is tourism. It is a big asset in areas like Norfolk and Suffolk, providing jobs in areas where perhaps previous occupations are not so strong in providing jobs, which are complementary to the agricultural or coastal community.”

Sheringham Players Present Forty Years On
It was after meeting playwright Alan Bennett in 2012 at Gresham’s School, Holt, that Bernice Escott and Moya Leighton decided that they would like to see a production of Bennett’s first play, ‘Forty Years On’.
With a Good Luck message from Alan Bennett himself, The Sheringham Players are embarking on their second half-century with a production of ‘Forty Years On’ at Sheringham Little Theatre, 13, 14 and 15 November, produced and directed by Bernice and Moya.
In his book, ‘Writing Home’, Alan Bennett describes the play “Set in a public school in the 1960s… part play and part review… an elegy for the passing of a traditional England… the play is constructed round a series of literary parodies.”

In writing to Sheringham Players, he called it a good apprenticeship for the stage.
‘Forty Years On’ was first produced in 1969, starring John Gielgud and Paul Eddington. Subsequent productions have featured Alan Bennett in the roles of young schoolmaster, Mr Tempest, and as the retiring Headmaster, who began his life at Albion House as a schoolboy.
The Headmaster (John Standish) is retiring after a production of the school play, ‘Speak for England, Arthur’, which has been written by Mr Franklin (Tim Travers) and the schoolboys. Parts have been written for Matron (Laura Williamson), the bursar’s secretary, Miss Nisbett (Thelma Torr) and schoolmaster Mr Tempest (Guy Bartle). Simplicity is described by the set, costumes and props – supposedly put together by the boys.
Sarah Mapes provides the music and Stage Manager is Matt Warrington.

The storms of last December reminded us all of how vulnerable the coastline of Norfolk is to the ravages of the sea and at our October meeting we heard from David Stannard about the long term effects the sea has had on our coastal communities. He spoke to us about the fate of Eccles and in particular how it came to disappear into the sea in the 16th century. Sea levels in this part of the North Sea have risen and fallen over time. Levels were much higher in Roman times but fell in Saxon times. This allowed communities such as Shipden and Eccles to develop on the newly exposed land. However in Norman times the sea level began to rise again and by the end of the 14th century Shipden along with other villages such as Clare, Keswick and Waxham Parva had been swallowed up by the sea. It was at this time,
of course, that the peat diggings of east Norfolk were flooded to form the Broads.
Rising sea levels were not the only problem, however. A number of severe storms affected coastal communities. In 1287 over 180 people in Hickling were killed during a storm and in 1338 the owners of Eccles asked for permission to move the church inland because of damage from the sea. Why and when did Eccles disappear? The village had been built on a sand spit and when a succession of storms broke through the northern end of the spit the village’s days were numbered. By the late 16th century Eccles had already been joined to neighbouring Hempstead as wills show that many parishioners wanted to be buried in Hempstead, a sure sign that they viewed the

future of Eccles as uncertain. A storm on All Saints Day in 1570 convinced the villagers that Eccles’ days were numbered. The church was “much decayed and not long to stand” and permission was sought and granted to move the church inland. The steeple was left standing on the shoreline as an aid to navigation and survived until 23 January 1895 when it finally toppled into the sea after a storm.
Much of the research into the history of Eccles has been conducted by enthusiastic amateurs and it is a testimony to their hard work that their efforts have been recognised as of national importance for understanding coastal change.
Our next meeting is on Friday 21 November in Cromer’s Community Hall at 7.30. Barbara Miller will be talking on Edith Cavell. All are welcome. Cost £2.50.

Cromer Times 457 November 8th 2014
The Overstrand & Cromer Community First Responder team would like to remind local people to make sure that their houses can be found easily and quickly should they have to call 999, especially now that the clocks have gone back, which means that the nights are drawing in.
The advice for local residents to help ensure that their homes can be quickly and easily identified by the emergency services are:
Because we respond locally in the areas where we live and work, we often arrive within the first few minutes following the 999 call being made. We can normally find the road where the incident is located fairly easily, but the biggest problem we then often face is actually finding the correct house.
This can mean vital minutes are wasted trying to find the house. It's even worse where houses only have names and not numbers, as we often have to search the entire street before we can find the correct property.
Cromer SNAP
• Make sure your house number is large enough to be seen from the road side. If you cannot see it from the street, the emergency services won’t be able to either.
• If possible place your house name and number on a wall or a gate post next to the road rather than on the door. Many houses have numbers on the side or on the door, which cannot be seen from the road at all.
• Cut back foliage regularly so that your number can be seen clearly. Bushes can hide the number, especially in the spring and summer.
• Ensure that your house name and/or number stands out - especially at night.
The Cromer Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel (SNAP) meeting was held on Monday 13 October at Cromer Town Council Offices. The below priorities were agreed to take forward:
• Speeding checks to be carried out across the Cromer neighbourhood.
• High visibility patrols to include visits to retail outlets to target retail theft
• Help your neighbours make their house numbers visible. The emergency services will be able to find your house quicker if your neighbours’ houses are also clearly numbered.
• If you have to call 999 in an emergency - if possible get someone to stand outside the house to watch out for help arriving and to flag them down. Or turn on the hazard lights of your car if it's parked in the drive or outside the house. At night turn all the lights on in the house, this will make it stand out more.
If local people can take notice of the above advice it will help us, the Ambulance crews and other 999 services to find houses much more quickly in an emergency situation, saving vital minutes and even lives.
If you need any help or advice in order to make adjustments or for any information regarding the work that CFRs do, please contact Jim Begley (CFR Coordinator) on 01263 576539
• Target anti-social behaviour over Halloween and bonfire night
These will be reported on at the next meeting which is due to be held on Monday 15 December at 6.30pm at Cromer Town Council Offices, North Lodge Park, Cromer.
If you have any issues or concerns from your area to raise at the next meeting please contact the Cromer Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101 or email sntcromer@norfolk.pnn.police.uk.

Norfolk Can Inspire to become part of fellow local charity The Benjamin Foundation
Norfolk Can Inspire (NCI) will become part of fellow local charity The Benjamin Foundation from 1 December, to help its work with 16-24 year olds grow into the future. NCI has been working with young adults dealing with difficulties such as mental or physical illness, learning difficulties and other issues. Providing these young people with volunteering opportunities in their local community enables them to be acknowledged as good citizens. For some this had led to achieving the nationally accredited NCI Award in Employability Skills.

The Benjamin Foundation is a Norfolk charity that has been supporting children, young people and families for twenty years. Each year it supports around 2,000 people across the county and has wide experience of working with the same 16-24 year old age group that NCI has been supporting. Dear Margaret,
Further to Johanne Bowles' letter in the 25th October edition of the Cromer Times, I should like to agree wholeheartedly with what she says.
My husband's ashes were buried in the Hazel Grove three years ago and I also commissioned a memorial bench to be placed there, under the huge tree in the middle. I have since had to take the bench away due to the terrible state of the Hazel Grove. I have been in contact with Geoffrey Hunter who assures me that all will be well, but I shall continue to visit and watch.
It was appalling that the area was allowed to deteriorate so much. When I chose it as my husband's last resting place it was beautiful, tranquil and well cared for (I wouldn't have chosen it otherwise). It had been lovingly tended by Richard Jones and the other dedicated volunteers for many years and only after their retirement did it become such a distressing sight. It is a great shame that Richard's natural bark paths with their sapling edges have been damaged and disregarded and the wildlife pool a source of danger, covered as it is by too much undergrowth. I had put in my will that I wish to be cremated and buried with my husband there. Now, agonising though it is, I don't think I can. Yours sincerely, Christine Wood

One of these little pups was Grace. She stole Catherine’s heart and arrangements were made for her to travel to the UK to join Catherine’s canine family.
On a very wet and windy day in October they set off from Hunstanton to start the 42 mile walk to Cromer. Three days later and despite the bad weather, Catherine, Grace and Honey arrived in Cromer.
The trio completed the walk in twenty hours through heavy rain and high winds to arrive in Cromer to a blue sky and sunshine where they enjoyed a well-earned cup of tea and of course a slice of cake. In association with www.cromerdeals.co.uk

Clinical Herrieven regains his title repeated as he stormed through the opening game in one hand with a series of powerful ground strokes and volleys into the back corners.
Ben Herrieven and Matt Copeman
Twenty eight year old Ben Herrieven, the No.1 seed, regained his title in Cromer Squash club’s annual club championships last month when he defeated the current club veteran’s champion, Matt Copeman, seeded No.2, 9-1 9-3 9-5 turning in a display of ruthless efficiency.
Herrieven, who won the title in 2012 was appearing in his fourth final and Copeman, who was runner-up in 2011, his second, and the final was a repeat of the 2011 semi-final in which Copeman came out on top. However, straight from the start Herrieven made sure there was no chance of this result being

Technical Director Barry Starling, who was one of the large crowd watching from the balcony, said: “It is good to have Ben back playing at the club and he thoroughly deserved his victory. I know it is easy to play from the balcony but I thought that if Matt, who is a very good player, had been able to slow the game down earlier he could well have made it a closer match.”
The plate competition for those who lost their first round matches was won for the second time in three years by Matthew Jordan, who lost to Herrieven in the first round and went on to beat the less experienced Steve Price, who after losing to Stephen Watts, played well to reach his second successive plate final, 9-5 9-6 9-1.
In the semi-finals Herrieven had beaten the club’s team captain Martin Sanville in straight games while Copeman had a much harder match against the 2013 champion, Stephen Watts, coming out on top 3-1.
Afterwards Herrieven said “I made a big mistake in being away from the club and not entering last year’s
