Issue 507 3rd December 2016
Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent
Christmas is coming … This year Cromer really does showcase the artistic skills of all the children at our local schools.
Not only have we received a bumper entry for the annual poster competition, sponsored by Jarrolds, but they have also created hundreds of Christmas Wish List labels as decorations to celebrate the re-instatement of a 25’ Christmas tree outside the parish church in the centre of town.
Thanks to the generous support of Hughes Electrical store, which again is sponsoring 1st prize for the Cromer Christmas Lights raffle, the manager Simon Morton has also funded these messages to Father Christmas as well as personally supporting the Cromer Christmas Lights volunteers in actually creating them! Much excitement and anticipation awaits the Switch-On ceremony on 3rd December as the volunteers have been extra busy in town putting up the lights for the past few weeks. They will
Metiya Nudchanad
Ella Harris
be bigger and brighter than ever thanks to generous support from the Town Council, the Fireworks and Carnival funds, the Central England Co-op and sponsorship from local traders and businesses not forgetting the wonderful ‘coffee and cake’ ladies at the church.

Kieran Shapcott
Harrington - St Mary’s School Roughton, Molly Youngman - Northrepps School Age 7-9: Ella Harris - St Mary’s School Roughton, with runners up Lily Showers - Cromer Junior School, Emma Hall - Gresham Village School Age 10-11: Kieran Shapcott -Gresham Village School, with runners up Madi Clark - St Mary’s School Roughton, Antonio Bonello - Cromer Junior School

#BlicklingdoesIbiza is returning on Friday 11 August 2017 – so don’t miss out !!
On a Friday in August, earlier this year, Classic Ibiza ensured that one of Norfolk’s best-known beauty spots rivalled the White Island for heat and party anthems, when DJ Goldierocks and the Urban Soul Orchestra (USO) brought some of the biggest dance tracks from the last 20 years to life.
The music started with a chilled set and, as the sun went down, the vocalists and USO’s dynamic musicians ramped things up as the evening exploded into festive-club mode with accompanying lasers and the crowd sang along and bounced in appreciation. The inaugural event was declared a smash hit by organisers and thousands of revellers from across the region clamoured for its return. Well the date has now been set, so keep Friday 11 August 2017 free and sign up early if you don’t want to miss the fun next year! There are a limited number of early bird tickets available NOW at a reduced price of £30 (£35 thereafter).
It will be the summer’s coolest classical dance party says Lisa Ward of Revival Productions “There’s something really special about the combination of a beautiful National Trust setting and a set that gets absolutely everyone on their feet dancing and singing to some of the biggest club tunes of the last two decades. The crowd were fantastic this year and the performers had a great time too! They cannot wait to return in 2017.
Classic Ibiza 2017 will be very much along the same lines with the best Ibiza anthems being brought to life by the uber-cool Urban Soul Orchestra, with international DJ Goldierocks mixing an exclusive, crowd-pleasing set. The orchestra will be fronted again by super-talented vocalists who excelled at getting the crowd going, with one change from last year, bringing in Roo Savill who was unable to perform this year as she was on tour. “These guys are at the top of their game and we’re delighted to have them all on board again for 2017. “
At 8pm on Friday 11 August, the Urban Soul Orchestra will start the evening with a fabulous ‘chill-out’ set featuring some of the best iconic Ibiza tracks including, Les Nuits – Nightmare on Wax, Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrop’ (medley), Groove Armada’s ‘At the River’ and William Orbit’s version of Barber’s Adagio for Strings.
During the interval, Goldierocks will take over the stage and fill the Blickling evening air with her creative mix of top Ibiza tunes. Her reputation as an international DJ and broadcaster has seen her establish a celebrity following which includes Madonna, Richard Branson and Jade Jagger, having performed exclusively for them all.
As the sun goes down, the Urban Soul Orchestra return with vocalists that ooze talent and charisma, Jina Burrows, Roo Savill and Maxamillion Barnes-Davy, will bring their own flavour of Ibiza as they join Goldierocks on stage for the second half of the concert; this is when the party really starts.
There will be 5 new tracks in the 2017 playlist and concert-goers will have the opportunity to choose two of them by selecting their favourites from a list of 10 iconic tunes to be revealed later. The programme will once again create a club-atmosphere with a fantastic laser-show cutting through the night sky in sync with the music.
Tracks will take the audience on a white island journey through hugely popular club anthems including Fat Boy Slim’s ‘Right Here, Right Now’; Faithless “Insomnia, Chase and Status “Blind Faith, Underworld “Born Slippy and Swedish House Mafia “Don’t You Worry Child. Lisa said: “Next year, the crowd will know what to expect so we’re even more excited, we have never received such phenomenal feedback from any event before. In fact, it was such a success that we are taking it to other venues around the country next year – it’s clearly a formula that works.
So, sign up for your early bird tickets now for an unforgettable party under the stars. The concert is expected to sell-out and you really wouldn’t want to miss it! Gates will open at 6pm and you can bring your own picnic (or order a Carluccio’s special), or buy at one of the top food outlets onsite; car-parking is FREE (both for coaches and cars).
A limited number of early bird tickets are available NOW at a reduced price of ÂŁ30 (ÂŁ35 thereafter). For full event details and tickets visit www.classicibiza.co.uk or call the event box office on 01630 674342.
Classic Ibiza is the first of two major music events being staged at the National Trust venue that weekend. “The Great British Prom will also be returning (previously known as Last Night of the Blickling Proms) and has become a firm favourite in the county calendar, details to be released shortly.

New waste and recycling information for North Norfolk Christmas, New Year and 2017 wheelie bin collection dates
New waste and recycling calendars will help people across North Norfolk understand how their bin collection dates will be affected by public holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter.
Every year North Norfolk District Council’s collection dates over the Christmas period and other public holidays differ slightly, sometimes taking place a day or two earlier or later than expected.
The new calendars show when wheelie bins will be collected over the next 12 months, from this December through to November 2017. Each calendar is specific to the usual day of collection, so people with Monday collections will receive different calendars to those with Tuesday collections and so on.
The calendars show any changes to collections as a result of public holidays by showing the actual collection date highlighted in yellow. If the dates have not changed they will appear in white. On the reverse side it illustrates what can go in the green recycling bin. Calendars will be hung on wheelie bins following emptying. Delivery of the new calendars began last month, taking place on collection day.
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said
“The calendars are being delivered to everyone across the district with a wheelie bin. We hope they will help people organise in advance when to put bins out for collection especially over Bank Holidays. “It’s a really good idea to keep the calendar somewhere safe that you can see easily as a reminder of collection dates. I always keep mine on the kitchen pinboard so I don’t forget.”
New garden waste calendars are also being delivered across the District and will be left under the garden waste bin lid or posted through residents’ doors if their bin has not been left out. The information can also be seen online at www. northnorfolk.org/ bincollection. Simply enter your postcode and then select your property.
District Council’s ‘dress down day’ raises money for Children in Need
North Norfolk District Council staff raised £265 last month with a cake auction, a sweepstake and a ‘dress down day’. The fundraising was in aid of BBC Children in Need.
NNDC Leader Tom FitzPatrick said “It was great to see everyone taking part and raising money for such a worthy cause.” Lisa Grice and Vicky Jarvis, staff members at NNDC

Chairman’s Volunteer Service
A special church service will be held at Cromer to say thank you to the people who volunteer their time and effort to help others.
Cllr John Lee, Chairman of North Norfolk District Council, has organised the special church service in February as a way of thanking all the people who go out of their way to help the community.
Cllr Lee said “In the six months that I have been Chairman of the Council I have been honoured to attend many events that recognise the fantastic work carried out by different volunteer groups across North Norfolk.
Coast Arts at Christmas
The COAST Arts season is expanding this year to include two new events in Sheringham at the beginning of December.
COAST Arts Christmas Fair & Forgotten Carols & songs of the Festive Season. 3 December at The Lighthouse, 62 Cromer Rd, Sheringham, NR26 8RT
• Christmas Fair - 10am – 4pm A quality selection of specially invited producers will make the COAST Arts Christmas Fair something special. The fair will give everyone the opportunity to purchase quality festive gifts direct from the artists and creators.

“I would be delighted if as many groups as possible join us at this service so on behalf of the people of North Norfolk I can thank them for all their hard work; their dedication to helping others in all walks of life is a lesson to us all."
The Church Service will be held on Sunday 26 February 2017 at Cromer Parish Church at 3pm and it is hoped there will be an opportunity to showcase the work of voluntary groups across the district at the venue.
Cllr John Lee is raising money for Cromer Youth Football Club and the Fisherman’s Mission during his year as Chairman of the authority.

Christmas Lights Volunteers
The Cromer Christmas Lights Volunteers would like to say a huge thank you to all those who have helped and supported us with putting up the lights this year.
From the traders and businesses who have donated to our raffle, the children and judges who have taken part in our poster competition, the church group who organised their wonderful coffee morning, those local organisations who have supported us financially, to the general public, who have bought raffle tickets and put donations in buckets.
We have been heartened by the support we have received.
WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
“It’s a common misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor, qualified Family Mediator and Collaborative solicitor.
As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. The common misconception is that a larger local firm or city firm is better but this is incorrect. A client just pays more.
When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I am one of the few solicitors that offffers a free first appointment so that clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision.
I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Get ready for Christmas with our treatment combinations Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is fully equipped with 16 state-of-the-art lasers and experience of helping thousands of people.
Dermal fillers have enjoyed tremendous increase in popularity. Unfortunately, success has brought lots of untested products, as well as untrained or poorly trained operators. Recent studies have shown an alarming rise in side effects with some studies showing as much as 25% complication rates.
Complications that we are particularly worried about are infections, direct injection into an artery which can cause catastrophic effects, Venous compression and more worryingly some cases of chronic pain. Permanent fillers are more of a problem because they do not stay confined but they can spread into the tissue planes, which may make surgery necessary if expression by needle fails.
Dr Sanjay gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM is medical director and laser surgeon at the Coltishall Cosmetic clinic and has been injecting safe dermal fillers for over 11 years with outstanding results. So, what are his tips for safe treatments and to minimise risk of complications.
a reputable product with a proven safety track record is used and that an experienced cosmetic medical practitioner administers it. Recently there has been a surge of new fillers coming into the market but a lot of these have far less research. The latest treatment is not necessarily the greatest. You donot want to be a guinea pig for an untested product. Choose that safest product and avoid permanent fillers.
Why treatment combinations? A number of changes happen to us as we age. We have volume loss, muscle over activity, sun damage and loss of elasticity. No single treatment can address all of these issues. Treatment combinations provide the best and natural results. We have invested in top of the range comprehensive technology and have the experience of using it effectively. We have designed these packages for reversing age related changes in one appointment. A kind of mini extreme makeover! You can find out more by calling 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk
1. Choose your practitioner wisely - what is their background? Do they have a medical qualification? Have they had any training in dermatology or surgery? How many treatments have they done and can they show you their results? This is very important because the person administering these treatments should not only be excellent at treatments, he or she should be able to manage complications should things go wrong. There is no shortage of people from different medical and even non-medical backgrounds offering these treatments. Remember you get what you pay for and cheapest is often not the best!
2. Choose your clinic wisely - do they offer a variety of treatments or do they have only one or two treatments that they can offer? Are they trying to fit you to a treatment rather than offering you most suitable treatment from a range of different available options? Do they provide information on side effects? No medical treatment is risk free. You have to know possible side effects and then make an informed choice. 3. Choose your product wisely - the most important thing is that

Lecal Solicitor urges caution about using Government’s ‘risky’ online legal tool By Fiona Hewitt, Solicitor and Director of Elderly Client Services at Hayes + Storr
Fiona Hewitt, Solicitor and Director of Elderly Client Services at local law firm Hayes + Storr, has joined a number of organisations representing older and vulnerable people to raise serious concerns around the Government’s online tool for creating Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).

An LPA is a powerful legal document that allows a person to appoint trusted individuals to make important decisions about care and finances on their behalf, in the event of a loss of mental capacity through an accident or illness such as dementia.
In May 2014, the Government’s Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) launched its online LPA tool, which it claims allows people to create the documents without the need for professional advice from a solicitor.

published by a coalition of organisations led by national member organisation Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), warns that anyone creating an LPA without taking specialist legal advice faces a significantly higher risk of being left with an ineffective legal document, incurring additional application fees, and even becoming a victim of fraud or coercion.
The report also raises concerns around the potential of a completely digital system proposed by the OPG, whereby ‘wet signatures’ – the physical signing of the document – would no longer be required.
Fiona Hewitt is a full accredited member of Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), and said:
“The prospect of being able to submit an LPA application entirely digitally is extremely concerning, and raises some serious questions around the potential for fraud and financial abuse.”
During a study conducted for the report, participants were invited to create LPAs using the OPG’s online tool and other ‘DIY’ methods. The study revealed that some of the forms did not accurately express the way in which participants would want their affairs and welfare to be handled in the future and that documents made using DIY methods were more likely to contain elementary mistakes, rendering them ineffective and requiring additional application fees. Following consultation with a solicitor, most participants made significant changes to the permissions of their documents regarding how and by whom their affairs were managed. June McSparron, a 75-year-old who participated in the study, said: “You’re exposing yourself to a lot of risk by filling this form in on your own. There are so many bits that you can get wrong, and you can easily be pressured into making choices that you’re not entirely comfortable with.”
The number of LPAs being registered has increased steadily since the launch of the online tool, with over half a million registered in 2015/16 alone. The OPG is actively trying to convince more people to apply for LPAs online, having set a target for the service to comprise 30% of all applications from April 2016 to March 2017. In its latest Annual Report, the OPG even admits it is willing to take ‘risks’ in striking a balance between ‘empowering and safeguarding’.
With the OPG already receiving over 1,000 calls to its contact centre every day, the organisations behind the campaign say the Government body is potentially exposing people to unacceptable levels of risk and in doing so may be compromising its ability to safeguard those who are most vulnerable.
Fiona Hewitt said “an LPA is a powerful and important legal document which allows you to pass potentially life-changing decisions about your affairs on to a third party. It’s absolutely right that people should be planning ahead for the future with LPAs, but granting someone this sort of authority over your affairs is an extremely big responsibility for all parties involved. This is a specialist area of the law, and we recommend that anyone considering an LPA goes to a legal expert to ensure they get the right advice, consider all the options, and safeguard themselves for the future.”

SKIP AND POPPYLAND BLOOMING AGAIN!
Cromer-based author Keith Skipper and Poppyland Publishing’s Peter Stibbons have joined forces for the third year in a row to provide another colourful addition to the local literary scene.
Keith’s A Rum Ole Norfolk Year, his 40th volume with that distinctive local flavour, is crammed with notable nuggets mined from over 30 years of keeping a comprehensive daily diary.
He says the general idea behind these month-by-month selections is “to salute the downright silly, acknowledge the outstanding achievers, bless those able to brighten the bleakest of days and congratulate all with a penchant for attracting publicity in the name of home-grown posterity.”
There are a few recurring themes, such as loyal service to local communities and the changing face of Norfolk life, but all those years of eavesdropping and jotting around his native patch tend to emphasise a natural passion for the mildly unbecoming or markedly unusual.
SHERINGHAM WOODFIELDS SCHOOL
PERMANENT CLEANER VACANCY £7.52 per hour, 15 hours per week, term time + 6 weeks holiday work (90 hours per year).
“When I started to keep a full-page daily diary just as 1984 dawned, I knew there must be room for smaller local items to spice up my pages and underline Norfolk’s well-deserved reputation for dewin’ diffrunt and then confusing the rest of the world even more by chuckling at the results.”
Working hours will be 3 hours per day between 2:15pm – 5:45pm (can be discussed and agreed at Interview). The school is seeking a hardworking, flexible and practical candidate who is happy to work as part of a team.
Peter Stibbons adds “This follow-up to Norfolk in a Nutshell and Keith Skipper’s Norfolk Scrapbook looks like completing a successful hat-trick for our cheerful partnership of recent times. Skip has a prolific pen and it’s always fun to combine our efforts in the name of homely entertainment.”
Call Simon or Marie on 01263 820520 for more information. Alternatively email office@sheringhamwoodfields.norfolk.sch.uk or visit the school website. Full training and induction will be provided
A Rum Ole Norfolk Year costs £9.95. Skip will be signing copies at the Jarrold book department in the Cromer store on Saturday, 10 December between 11am and 1pm.

CROMER MUSIC EVENINGS
REVIEW OF CONCERT HELD ON 23 OCTOBER
BERTIE AND THE BANDITS
This was the first concert of the new season for both Cromer Music Evenings and the COAST festival and turned out to be an historical and musical experience focussed on Poppyland.
The Bandits, an ensemble of superb young artists, produced an afternoon of informative content and compositional expertise by Anderson-Haggart, who set many of the poems and songs to music and soon captured the delight of the capacity audience. In a relaxed manner, Anderson-Haggart explained the origin and history of each item recorded by local historian, Kit Hood, who did not record the tunes. Being set to music brought Hood's writings alive. Evie Anderson, mezzo soprano soloist, excelled in her performances, producing a beautiful rich timbre, truly professional in her vocal skills.
This artistic ensemble comprises Anderson-Haggart (viola, guitar, voice), Evie Anderson (cello, voice, piano), Anne-Marie Kirby (violin), Rhiannon Lock (cello) and Emma Price (flute, accordion). The musical introductions to the songs were so very impressive, sometimes sombre, mystique and joyful, preparing the listener for the mood of the texts, using pizzicato effects, deep sonorous cellos, flowing melodic phrasing from the flute, with the accordion highlighted in all the right places, not forgetting the very close harmonic effects of the vocal duets in many of the songs.
Arthur Windridge paid tribute to the performers, saying the concert was summed up in just one word - UNIQUE! A very apt statement indeed. Terry Keeler
Charity Night at Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre
The show was well-attended and met with much acclaim, as performers show cased their individual skills in a variety of acts, and was enjoyed by an appreciative audience. Acts included Tap the Barrell, Cutting the Mustard and stand up comedian Pat Nearney.
Graham Jones should be congratulated on staging this successful charity one night stand. Jeremy Roughton

THE STRAND CLUB
We were approached to see if we would like to donate a wreath in our name to the Remembrance Day Service which we were delighted to do. Jean undertook to deliver it on the day and in good time for the two minutes' silence.
A very entertaining afternoon was spent making crackers for our December party. A wide range of expertise was discovered amongst our members and much laughter ensued as those more 'crafty' helped those who were less so. Glo had sourced an excellent kit of ready cut, different coloured crackers which needed the snap added before folding into a cylinder. This was the hardest bit as the crackers sometimes seemed to have a mind of their own – oddly, particularly the red ones! Hats were added after one end was tied, and then the other end was tied too. It was now time to decorate our crackers as we wished from the wide selection of items available, including gold and silver bows, Christmas stickers and coloured ribbon. Members were delighted - and even a little surprised at the results of their efforts.
Members made their menu choices and paid their dues for our special lunch at the Country Club in January. What with that, and the crackers, we are beginning to feel quite festive!
Visitors and guests of members are always welcome. We ask for just £2 at the door which covers refreshments, and raffle tickets are available separately throughout the afternoon. Please come and see if you like us. We meet at 2pm on the second Wednesday of every month in the Pavilion, Overstrand and look forward to meeting you!
For further information please contact Glo Begley, Programme Co-ordinator, on 01263 576539 or Chris Wood, Secretary, on 01263 579433.
North Norfolk District Council hosts exhibition of silver and gemstone jewellery
New Exquisite Crystals collection showcases locally hand-crafted items North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery welcomes local artist Bev Harding with a collection of jewellery.
Cromer resident Bev has been making costume jewellery and gifts for over 25 years. This intricate collection demonstrates a variety of craft techniques, many of which have been self-taught. Bev’s jewellery showcases gemstones and pearls, as well as interesting reclaimed and recycled elements, some beachcombed around Norfolk’s coast.
Bev said “My work really reflects where I live and where I come from; the reclaimed items I use come direct from my environment, while the beauty that can be created from silver and gemstones mirrors seas and skies and the light we experience here in Norfolk. I’m so pleased to be able to exhibit at the District Council.” Bev’s exhibits will be for sale and she is available to make bespoke commissions in the run-up to Christmas.
Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said “It’s great to be able to offer craftspeople and artists a space to exhibit their works. This is a lovely collection of handmade jewellery and we are pleased to be able to host them.”
Exquisite Crystals runs from 24 November to 25 January, 2017 at the NNDC offices gallery in Holt Road, Cromer.
The 1st Floor Gallery is open to the public Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am-5pm, Wednesday 10am-5pm and Friday 8.30am-4.30pm.

Some columns have been found to be cracked underground and thus new columns will also be installed where necessary. The Town Council have consulted with local heritage/conservation groups and identified areas where it is more appropriate to install heritage style columns. Sheringham Christmas Tree Festival
St. Andrew’s Methodist Church Sheringham extends a warm invitation to enjoy the atmosphere in your build up to Christmas by visiting Sheringham’s seventh Charity Christmas Tree Festival which will take place from Thursday 8 December to Sunday 11 December.
Organised jointly by St Peter’s Parish Church and St. Andrew’s Methodist Church, the festival is a major event for Sheringham and provides a spectacular spiritual platform for charities to raise funds by attracting donations from visitors.
Last year’s event was hosted by St. Peters Parish Church and raised over £5,000 for the
41 charities that took part. This year around 30 local and national charities will be represented. Each charity will decorate its tree in an imaginative way that will uniquely portray the charities aims. There will also be a prayer tree where visitors will be able to write a prayer and display it on the tree
and rolls (served from 12.30pm – 2pm on weekdays approximately). There will also be a children`s activity area for our younger visitors.
The innovative displays will be supported by a background of seasonal music and there will also be a variety of stalls where last minute Christmas gifts can be bought!
The festival will be open Thursday to Saturday 10.30am – 5pm and Sunday 2pm – 5pm. On the final evening of the festival, Sunday 11 December at 5.30pm. the Festival will conclude with a Christmas Tree Service led by Rev. Sharon Willlimott. Everyone is welcome.
Light refreshments will be available throughout the festival, including soup
Admission to the festival is free with donations welcomed to support the charities. A warm welcome awaits so come along, support your favourite charity and share in the love of the Holy Child, Jesus Christ in this special community event.

Norwich City FC Review by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent
As of writing this article, Norwich, seem to find themselves in a difficult situation and are spiralling down in form.
After 5 consecutive losses, Alex Neil is in a precarious position after losing 2-1 away to QPR. This has left Norwich drifting further away from the automatic places as Newcastle and Brighton have continued with their good form as Norwich start to drastically decline.
Rotherham).
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results, Alex Neil continues to play the same defenders making mistakes such as Russell Martin; we have the same defence as we did when we were in the Premier League 4 seasons ago with the only changes now being Pinto and Klose.
One of the key issues that has been highlighted over the past few weeks is the defensive woes of Norwich City, leaking in the second worst amount of goals in the league (just behind
This is not Neil’s fault, clearly, but the recruitment team and the board need to have a clear vision of where they want to be as we don’t want to be drifting between the
Just over thirty years ago Cromer squash player Jeff Morris tragically died on court and the Club decided to honour his memory by instigating a tournament for players aged 35 and over which was held for the first time in the autumn of 1985. This year was the 31st anniversary of that first tournament and in the final last month the reigning Club Champion, Stephen Watts, who won his only previous title five years ago, became champion for the second time as he defeated Martin Sanville, who was playing in his third successive final, 9-3 9-3 9-0.
Watts won the first four points of the match and although Sanville pulled himself back to 3-4, Watts surged ahead to take the opening game of the match 9-3. The second game followed a similar pattern with the game evenly balanced at 3-3 before a run of six successive points gave Watts the game 9-3 and a 2-0 lead.
FIVE YEARS ON IT’S WATTS AGAIN!
As always there was a large crowd on the Norwich Road balcony to watch the final and although the match did not last as long as some previous finals, the standard of squash was still high.
Watts, who won the Club championship earlier in the season was the No 1 seed for this event and he went into the final as the clear favourite, despite Sanville having turned in an outstanding semi-final performance when he came from 1-2 down to beat the defending champion John Baker 1-9 9-2 3-9 9-6 10-8 in a marathon match. The effort Sanville put into this match was probably decisive as he was always on the defensive against Watts who dominated the rallies and made very few unforced errors.

Monday 12 December – 10.30am - Metton to Hanworth Walk – Grade 3 – Approx. 3.5 miles –
By now Sanville was visibly tiring and mistakes were creeping into his game. He continued to battle hard throughout the third game but Watts, perhaps mindful of his opponent’s semi-final comeback, was determined not to allow him back into the match and only lost three rallies as he took the game 90 and the match 3-0. By winning the match Watts became only the fourth reigning club champion, and the first since Willie Frazer in 2005, to go on to win the Over 35 title and he has every chance of completing an unprecedented treble next month when the club holds its annual veterans tournament.
The other beaten semi-finalist was Peter Arbuthnot who next week will be heading off to Nuremberg and Vienna to compete in the Over 65s event at the World Racketlon championships.

I'm personally a fan of Alex Neil, however I think a change of personnel is needed, but who to replace him with?
My personal option would be Sam Allardyce, as long as it was feasible following the allegations with his involvement with third party ownership of players.
Allardyce has a proven track record from managing teams like Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham and I believe he would get us out of the division.

Technical Director Barry Starling, who played in the very first tournament and who bowed out of the tournament at the quarter final stage when he lost in straight games to Watts, said after the final “This was a dominant performance from Stephen Watts throughout the tournament. Martin Sanville played exceptionally well to reach the final for the third successive year but at the end of the day he had no real answer to Stephen’s determination and all round game. Both Roger Tuck and Martin Pearse did the double a couple of times more than 20 years ago but this performance was just as impressive”
Watts, himself, said “I obviously never had the privilege of knowing Jeff Morris but the older players all tell me what a great club man he was and I am pleased and proud to have won the trophy again”
