A dazzler of a display (that was worth the wait) Crowds of locals and visitors enjoyed a dazzling and spectacular start to welcome in the New Year in Cromer today – one week later than planned.

The annual New Year’s Day Fireworks display – the biggest in the country – was postponed a week due to adverse weather conditions on 1 January.

The breathtaking display saw over 2,400 fireworks launched off Cromer Pier and out to sea in a show that was well worth the wait and attracted people from far and wide to the town on a still winter’s day. Continued on page 4...

A dazzler of a display (that was worth the wait) Continued from front cover...

On that day in 1917 a green rocket was fired to mark the end of what had been a tumultuous day. Cromer Mayor Tim Adams said “We’ve had a fantastic evening, with a lot of visitors from as far afield as Cambridgeshire. People have come a long way to see the display, it’s a calendar event for some people and they come every year.” Director of Titanium Fireworks, Simon Page, said “We are incredibly proud to have fired the display this year. It all went to plan and we’re very pleased to get the show we wanted to do on New Year’s Day up today. Cromer Pier is a unique setting, it is in good condition which means we can be quite creative and we’re already thinking about new ideas for 2018. It’s all about trying to make the most of the architecture of the pier, it’s a great shape to work with. Some of the 150 disNorth Norfolk plays we fire each year are work but others unbridle our creativity and we relish the challenges and opportunities of firing from an iconic struc ture like Cromer Pier." Chairman of the Fireworks committee Jim Bond said: "It was again, better than ever, it continues to wow year-on-year. The weather was perfect so we got patterns of smoke in the air too. The display makes the most of this unique setting and has drawn lots of excited and complimentary comments. The hard work put in by the email: info@northnorfolkholidayhomeservices.vpweb.co.uk many volunteers, and the co-operation of many www.northnorfolkholidayhomeservices.vpweb.co.uk local services and businesses makes this a particularly satisfying event." Crowds donated a total of just over £8,000 to Mobile: 07852 565043 the event’s bucket collection which will be split Hillside, Cromer, North Norfolk between funding next year’s display and a grant fund for local Cromer charities to apply to. Fully Insured with the NFU Mr Bond said “The committee are extremely pleased with the amount raised and would like to thank everyone for their support.”

Spectators lined the cliff tops and promenade to watch the 14-minute extravaganza explode in the skies and on the surface of the sea. Thousands of fireworks produced 27 sequences in the display – all preceded by a single green shell to mark the eve of the 100th anniversary of one of Cromer Lifeboat’s most famous rescues which took place on January, 9 1917 – that of the Fernebo.

For the fifth year running the organisers are running a Photography Compeition which is open to all nonprofessional photographers who attended the event. Did you take a photo of the fireworks on the day? If so, you have until midday on Monday, January 16 2017 to enter your images.

The winner will have their image turned into the official poster for the 2018 New Year’s Day Firework event as well as use in other promotional material. Local electrical retailer Hughes Plus are also offering the winner the latest 43” HD TV. Manager of Hughes in Cromer, Simon Morton said “Once again it is a pleasure for us to support this amazing event in our town. This year’s winning photographer will be rewarded with a 43” LG LCD television boasting Full HD resolution, built-in Freeview HD and a Virtual Sound Surround. The quality and quantity of entries increases each year and, hopefully many will be tempted to place their own entry for the first time. I would like to thank all the members and volunteers that help to make such an iconic and eagerly awaited Norfolk event a reality each year and attract so many visitors to sample the atmosphere Cromer has to offer.”

Chairman of the Fireworks committee Jim Bond said “The annual New Year's Day Fireworks have been capturing people's imagination for eighteen years, every year we see hundreds of fabulous photographs of the event in the press and online. We are looking for photographs that really capture the spirit of the event."

The art exhibitions will be running concurrently with the Snowdrop Sunday afternoon teas, when the churchyard is carpeted with aconites and snowdrops. Hot drinks, delicious homemade cakes and a good selection of books to buy or exchange.

On behalf of Cromer New Year’s Day Firework Committee, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who contributed to making this year’s event, extremely successful.

Although visitor numbers were down because of the postponement, we still managed to raise over £8,000.00, taking our overall donations since 2000, to over £100,000. An amazing figure, with approximately half going to local community groups and charities, and half to funding of the following year’s display.

My thanks to the many people behind the scenes who help put this all together, and particularly to Titanium Fireworks, who created a very special, individual and incredible display, that makes this a ‘must see’ way of beginning the New Year.

Thank you too, to the very generous spectators who donated towards the event, which will enable us to put on next year’s display, and give grants to local good causes. Any group or individual who would like to apply for a small grant should contact Cromer Town Council (clerk@cromertown.org ) Jim Bond, Chair of Cromer New Year’s Day Firework Committee

By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners

How are your New Year’s resolutions going? I’m sure a number of you will have been participating in Dry January, and while I may not have committed to a resolution of my own, I take delight in being your botanical themed support. Be warned, my method of helping you remain on the sober straight-and-narrow is to put you off alcohol with stories of some fascinating and ghastly beverages.

Mudai is a Chilean alcoholic ceremonial drink created from the boiled seeds of Araucaria araucana, the monkey puzzle tree. The fermentation process is aided by chewing up and spitting back (er, no thanks) the seeds to add enzymes to break up starch. Mudai is not the only drink in which this method is employed, with the South/ Central American Chicha traditionally being created from the chewing of uncooked Zea mays (corn).

Jeppson’s Malört, known as “Chicago’s most beloved and disgusting liqueur” is so bitter that the manufacturer describes it as “unrelenting, even brutal to the palate” - there is even a rumour that it is flavoured with gasoline. The culprit is in fact Artemisia absinthium (wormwood) and the name absinthium is believed to come from the Greek word ‘absinthion’ meaning ‘undrinkable’. If that’s

01692 405301

not enough to deter you, the main active ingredient in wormwood (in tiny quantities, however, in derivative drinks) is the neurotoxin thujone, and side effects from consuming wormwood include renal failure, convulsions, involuntary evacuations, abnormal respiration, and foaming at the mouth.

Rosolio was a cordial created with our native Drosera rotundifolia (sundew) as described by Sir Hugh Plat in 1600. Sundews are a carnivorous plant that trap and digest their prey with the use of glistening, mucilage topped tentacles, hence their common name, and Sir Hugh specified the removal of any dead insects before adding the ingredient to his cordial recipe. Sonnentau Likör, a German liqueur, still contains the sundew as an ingredient.

Secale cereale, or rye, a base ingredient in some whiskeys, beers and vodkas, is susceptible to ergot (Claviceps purpurea) fungus, which sometimes resembles the grain so closely it can be difficult to identify. Until the late

1800s the dark growths were believed to be a normal part of the plant. This fungus is, however, highly toxic to people and contains a precursor to LSD that survives the brewing process. Ergot is the cause of miscarriages, seizures, gangrene, psychosis and even death. In the middle ages, entire villages could be subject to outbreaks of ‘dancing mania’, and it’s even been speculated that the Salem witch trials were based on convulsions caused by ergotism that led locals to believe the sufferer was bewitched.

Now go forth and be joyous in your decision to take a break from the grisly business that is alcohol consumption!

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS

Members of Sheringham & Cromer Lions would like to thank all those who donated money when we held a Pub Dash in Sheringham, Cromer, Runtons and Holt on Friday 16 December and a street collection in Sheringham on Saturday 17 December in aid of the creation of a Parents Rest area and a Sensory Zone for patients of the Jenny Lind Ward, Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. We collected a grand total of £950.

Earlier in 2016, we handed over a cheque for £3000 to the North Norfolk Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, as well as another cheque for £250 to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. In addition, we held two special street collections for the Italian Earthquake Appeal (collected £200) and the people of Haiti effected by Hurricane Matthew (collected £300). Without your continued support and generosity these donations would not have been possible so another big thank you.

In addition to the above, we also made up 12 hampers which were distributed to needy families in and around Cromer & Sheringham. Our main charity at present is Prostate Cancer UK so if you see any of our members standing in the street with a collection tin please make a donation no matter how big or small every penny counts.

You can be reassured that every penny donated by the public goes to charity or local causes. Nothing is deducted for administration cost as these are all met by the members themselves

We are always looking for more members so if you would like to know more or even come along to a meeting please feel free to speak to one of our members if you see them with their collecting tins or call Hazel on 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com

by way of raffles and silly fines etc. at our business meetings etc.

In past years we have made donations to Woodfields School in Sheringham, Nelson’s Journey Children’s Charity, the Walcott, Bacton & Happisburgh Flood Relief Group, including personal donations to some of the residents of the tidal surge in December 2013, East Anglian Air Ambulance, Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind plus many other smaller donations to local causes.

Lion Brian Harris, Secretary, Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

In addition to the above, we have purchased a special bed for a little boy with severe medical problems. We have also purchased accessories for a little girl with a very rare medical condition. Her mother obtained a grant for the special pushchair that was required but the accessories which included an all weather cover did not form part of this grant so we were very pleased that we could assist.

We raise our fund by holding fundraising events such as Quiz & Chips Nights, Race Nights, Fashion Shows etc. and Pub Dash’s as well as attending fetes, carnivals and the like with our Tombola Stall. We also have street collections in Sheringham , Cromer & Holt.

This year we are planning to hold a Motorcycle extravaganza over a weekend in June full details of which we hope will be available soon We meet on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of every month at The Morley Club at 7.30pm. The first Tuesday is our usual business meeting and the second Tuesday is some sort of social meeting.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, spread a bit of love to neglected children in the Ukraine.

Each year the Canaan Christian Centre, based in Sheringham, raises £1000 to send children in a Ukraine orphanage to a summer camp in the Carpathian hills.

This makes a huge difference to their lives and the money we send is raised through a sale of unwanted gifts in the Coffee Bar of the Parish Church Hall in Cromer (opposite Boots) from 9am - 2pm.

Refreshments are served and we hope to also have a second hand book stall and children’s stall on Saturday 11 February. Admission is free.

The films are My Wife’s Relations, in which the hapless Keaton must contend with his new wife’s four burly brothers, and The General, regarded as Keaton’s masterpiece. These hilarious silent films will be accompanied by local maestro Geoff Cummings-Knight on the piano. Tickets are £5.

Looking further ahead, on 2 March the Society is showing Queen : A Night in Bohemia, a film of the band’s Hammersmith Odeon concert from 1975 when they first played the classic-to-be, Bohemian Rhapsody. Tickets for this will be £7.50

Both shows are at Northrepps Village Hall where doors open at 7pm with drinks for sale before the events begin at 7.30pm. For more details, see www.northreppsfilmsociety.co.uk.

Choral Society Fund Raising Event

Something rather different will be happening in St Peter’s Parish Church Sheringham on the evening of Saturday 18 February.

At 7.30pm – for just one night only – the church will be transformed into a cinema of the silent movie era - complete with organ accompaniment.

Anthony Gowing, a nationally renowned organist, has a particular passion for accompanying silent movies on the organ. For this very special occasion, which is to raise much-needed funds for the Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society (where Anthony is accompanist), he will accompany the full length feature film ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ which was made in 1925 and stars the then very popular Lon Chasey.

Free entry – no need to buy tickets in advance. There will be a retiring collection (recommended minimum donation £8). This is a great opportunity to do something a little different on a February evening at the end of half term and help a good cause in the process. St Peter’s renowned ‘posh’ refreshments will be available. Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to announce that much appreciated grants of £100 each have been received from both Norwich and Peterborough Building Society and the Cromer and Sheringham Crab and Lobster Festival which will help defray the costs of film hire.

What are Lasting Powers of Attorney?

As lawyers, we are continually striving to educate the public on the importance of having Lasting Powers of Attorney in place. This legal document gives authority for others to make decisions on your behalf when you are unable to.

legal power to refuse life sustaining treatment on his behalf to allow him to pass away peacefully. They are in the process of challenging the doctors' decision to keep Paul on life support through the Court of Protection. This will enviably be a long and stressful process for the family who are already dealing with so much grief.

How could this situation have been different? If Paul had made a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health & Welfare matters, the application to the Court of Protection may not have been necessary.

The case of Paul Briggs is a heart wrenching example highlighting the significance of making sure your wishes and feelings are formally recorded before it becomes too late. Sadly, Paul Briggs, a husband and father to a young daughter, was involved in a traffic incident. This has left him unconscious for the past 17 months and in a permanent vegetative state. Paul is unable to make decisions himself or communicate his wishes and feelings.

A Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney can give nominated people the power to consent or refuse life sustaining treatment on your behalf. This means that a person you trust can take into account your personal wishes and

feelings and make this incredibly important decision on your behalf. It also covers wider situations, for example arranging for your care and your day to day welfare needs.

It can be tempting for people to view a Lasting Power of Attorney simply as a tool to plan for mental or physical incapacity in later life. However, this document could be of significant value for many of us who find ourselves in a similar situation to Paul and his family.

Throughout January 2017, we are offering 25% off Lasting Powers of Attorney. To claim your discount, or to find out how our legal team can help you for peace of mind, contact us today. As reported in the Telegraph, Paul's wife has described his condition as "much worse than if he had died at the scene". She explains that she,"…never knew that states worse than death existed until this happened to Paul."

She goes on to explain the torture the family are experiencing witnessing Paul in his current condition. Reportedly Paul, "Would not have wanted to carry on being kept alive purely on life support."

Unfortunately for Paul and his family, it seems no formal instructions were recorded to confirm what he would want to happen in a horrific situation like this. His family, therefore have no

Make a New Year’s resolution to help others in your community

Could you make a New Year’s resolution to help people in your local community? That’s the question being asked by Norfolk Community Transport Association (NCTA). There are nearly 50 community transport schemes operating across the county but, as NCTA chair Kate Gill explains “our schemes rely heavily on the important contribution made by volunteers giving of their time and energy – as drivers, administrators, trustees and passenger assistants - but we are especially short of drivers. We’re in urgent of people who are willing to give a few hours of their time to drive local residents on straightforward but essential journeys. In a mainly rural county like Norfolk, community transport is many people’s only means of getting to and from healthcare appointments or just to the local shops. Around 250,000 journeys a

year are provided across the county, helping local residents live independently and access social activities, education and employment. “We’re very lucky in Norfolk” added Kate. “Many communities have a volunteer car scheme, a local communityrun bus service or dial-a-ride scheme offering responsive and accessible travel option – but we do need drivers and would urge anyone who feels they might be able to contribute to the wellbeing of others in their community to get in touch to see how they might be able to help.” Commercial operators often find rural routes uneconomic and in some areas of the county there are just no transport choices available. Some community transport schemes serve just one village, others provide extended DialA-Ride bus services across wider areas and still others arrange social trips and days out.

If you could help as a volunteer driver, or would just like to find out more about what might be involved, please visit www.ncta.org.uk or call 01362 698216.

CROMER IN BLOOM

Cromer in Bloom have had another busy year, looking after the many gardens and green spaces around the town. In the spring, we enjoyed an outing to Edgefield Nurseries where we chose several new shrubs and flowers to replace those lost over the course of last winter. Although we have fewer hard frosts here than inland areas, our Cromer gardens suffer from the harsh, salt-laden winds that sweep across the North Sea from Scandinavia and consequently acquire wind burn on the seaward side.

At the moment we are trying to create wind breaks with hardier shrubs such as Lonicera, Myrtle and Photinia, so that we can grow less hardy plants and flowers in the shelter behind them. In November some of our members added a bark mulch to the gardens opposite Morrisons garage to provide greater protection

and windy in the winter!

and moisture retention for our newly planted shrubs. This garden is exposed to all the elements – baking hot and dry in summer, wild

We enjoyed Christmas drinks and mince pies at the Red Lion Hotel and combined this with a farewell presentation and thank you to Sally and Roger Tipple who have been loyal members for several years. They are hoping to spend more time on their allotment together and we wish them well.

In the New Year, we will be spending time

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

The first meeting of 2017 was fairly well attended given the cold and stormy weather that greeted the new year.

Our speaker was Peter Mackness, who had spent a number of years in Sri Lanka in the 1970s (which was called Ceylon in those days) and took as his subject ‘Cinnamon and Coconut’. This topic may have seemed out of place on a gloomy January evening in Cromer but perhaps something exotic was just what was needed given the, dare I say it, uncertainty and gloom that seems so widespread at the moment ( and I’m not just thinking about the weather!!)

Cinnamon comes from a tropical plant that is regularly coppiced to encourage new growth. When branches are five or six feet in length they are cut down and before they have the chance to dry out the soft outer layer is scraped away. The next layer of bark is then peeled off and cut into what are called “quills”. These are six to eight inches long and are then rolled with other quills to produce a cinnamon stick. This process is very similar to how cigars are made. The sticks are then dried in the sun and there you have it. The process is very simple but as you can imagine is labour intensive and this means that today the end product is rather expensive and much of what is marketed as cinnamon in shops is, in fact, cassia which comes from trees related to the cinnamon tree but is not the genuine article.

rejuvenating the gardens near the Tourist Information Centre, trimming back old woody stems and clearing some of the Phormiums, which seem to have outgrown their space. They are certainly hardy, but inclined to be rather thuggish. Look out for us in our green jackets and give us a wave!

We meet at 10am on Tuesday mornings and are always happy to welcome new members. We are a friendly bunch and enjoy having a coffee together afterwards as a reward for all our hard work! If you are interested in joining us ring Jim Bond on 01263 514515.

still plaited into sheets that are used for roofing material for simple structures like the umbrellas found on hotel terraces and beaches.

Many in the audience had been to Sri Lanka on holiday and one or two had booked to go later in the year so it was nice to be given an insight into aspects of life on this tropical island. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 8 February at 7.30 pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. The topic could not be different from that of January as Trevor Harrison from South Creake Nursery will be speaking on ‘Late Winter Colour’. Trevor’s nursery has a large collection of hellebores so expect plenty of advice on how to grow these wonderful plants but he is sure to have tips on what else to grow to give our gardens winter appeal. Visitors are always welcome. Cost £2.

All of us are familiar with coconuts and the popularity of Thai cuisine means that coconut products are found in many homes these days. The water we extract from coconuts bought in shops has no commercial value. The flesh of coconuts is used to produce coconut cream and the slightly diluted coconut milk and it is these products that form the mainstay of Far Eastern cooking. The husks of the fruit are used to produce coir which has many household uses. The leaves of the tree are

British Bluegrass for the Bluebirds

Perhaps a somewhat unlikely coupling, but early February sees an evening of Bluegrass and Country music helping a water sports club in Norfolk.

The evening will also offer an opportunity to hear live performances of some self- penned songs from singer Hayley Moyses’ brand new album ‘New Songs for Nashville’.

Hayley Moyses’ Britgrass Three will bring their unique blend of Americana and sometimes fun take on well-known pop tunes blended with Country and more to Northrepps Village Hall to help the Bluebird Deaf Water Ski and Wakeboard Club, a not for profit organisation that was formed in 1965. The club that operates from Costessey Pits, Taverham, encourages people from all walks of life to

enjoy water skiing and wakeboarding, particularly including members of the deaf community. Amongst other projects the club also holds regular activity days throughout the season for local schools, as well as for guides and scouts and participates in the Sportivate programme in conjunction with Active Norfolk.

One such member of this unique club is Scott Butler, familiar to some for being the local promoter responsible for Cromer’s annual ‘Folk on the Pier’ festival, and other concerts and events. Scott now in his early sixties took up the exciting sport of water skiing for his first time with the club two years ago, and has been so impressed by the effect this has had personally on his own health and general wellbeing that he has decided to enlist an act he has worked with on numerous

The Strand Club

The Strand Club met for its annual festive lunch on 11 January, this year at the Amber Restaurant in Cromer Country Club.

Everyone enjoyed the occasion despite a cold wind outside! The restaurant was warm and welcoming and Louise and her staff were most efficient and friendly. We all felt the food was excellent and promptly served. Our thanks and appreciation go to everyone at the restaurant and to Glo for organising it.

Our next meeting will be back at the Pavilion in Overstrand and is 18

billed as ‘Putting a Spring in your Step’. Come and meet us all there visitors are always welcome and are charged just £2 at the door, which includes a hot drink and biscuits. We meet at 2pm so do come along on 8 February to see what we will be up to!

March 8th is the AGM which, once a few decisions are made, will be another fun afternoon. We would like as many members to come as they can, so that the decisions will be as democratic as possible!

For further information about the club, please contact our Programme Co-ordinator, Glo, on 01263 576539 or Chris, our Secretary, on 01263 579433. A Happy New Year to everyone.

Theatre’s plea for more behind the scenes helpers Panto boost

A community theatre is appealing for people to join its unsung “cast” of helpers who work away from spotlight to help it stage drama, cinema and music. Sheringham Little Theatre has an army of about 80 folk who give their time for a variety of roles from usher duties and selling programmes to distributing posters and serving in the coffee bar. Now it is looking to bolster the ranks, and is particularly keen to find those who can tackle: • Fundraising – ideas and organisation • Handyman and maintenance work to keep on top of minor repairs • Backstage crew roles from props to scenery – and even stage management for local productions. • Costumes – laundry, ironing and repairs

A Peter Pan panto hooked in the crowds at Sheringham Little Theatre. More than 6000 people watched the 45 shows during the festive season. An average of 83% of capacity audiences!

Volunteer champion Wendy Austin serving cakes at the Hub coffee bar

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “Without our marvellous volunteers we simply could not survive. If we had to pay for all the things they do it would just not be affordable. But we are a Little Theatre with big ambitions and we want do more in the community we serve – and we need more people to help us. Some of the jobs need some skills, but enthusiasm and time are just as important.” Mrs Thompson said the theatre was particularly keen to set up a fundraising team, who could come up with ideas for events, organize and run them and encourage the community to hold money-spinning functions to support their local theatre. There was a real sense of team spirit and family among the volunteer team and the theatre ran social events during the year, she added. Volunteers also get invitations to private events at the theatre. Long-standing helper Wendy Austin, who is the theatre’s volunteer champion, and helps in the Hub coffee bar with husband Graham, said ”We love the theatre and want to support it and the local community. It is great to meet other people – from the public to other volunteers. She also provides ‘digs’ for visiting actors throughout the year – and the theatre is also looking for more people to house cast members particularly during the summer drama and panto seasons. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Wendy Austin on 01263 822429 or drop into the box office for a chat about volunteering. Anyone able to help with accommodation should call the theatre or 01263 822117.

News from the Cromer Chamber

The New Year often is a time for a big change, a new start, new direction or regime change. As you may already know,, the Chamber had its change back in December and so we’re all ready to get going in 2017.

So how does the Chamber make a difference? The two key words that best describe what we do are ‘protection’ and ‘promotion’. Of course, protection is often from threats unknown but in the past it’s been from unwanted car parking restrictions, to give an example. When it comes to promotion then there are lots of things we’re involved in. Over the next few weeks you’ll notice that the four large black notice boards around the town and in the car parks will get a long overdue refurbishment; looking their best for our summer visitors. We’re also looking into how we can introduce more functional signage into the town to better direct people.

I’m happy to say we once again will be taking Cromer to the Norfolk Show and working with a small team from the community in promoting everything that Cromer has to offer. We will meet with 1000s of visitors that come to the show encouraging them to choose Cromer and this year our stand will be bigger and better than last year!

Of course there will be our usual initiatives like training events, promotional campaigns, involvement in the Carnival, helping new businesses, attending council meetings and supporting other community organisations which all come together to make our town and community a great place to live and do business in.

If you would like more information about what the Chamber does or how it can help I would be happy to hear from you - gary@thisiscromer.co.uk or 01263 579422. Gary Dickenson

The Rose Bower Review by Kelvin I Jones

‘This collection of 12 short stories, based on the theme of a rose, is a delight to read.

The symbol of the rose is used in various ways to evoke emotional significance in the reader and includes, amongst other experiences, a wedding, a suicide, a drowning and a war time event.

The rose can represent life, death and, more frequently, passion.

Joy Hodge delineates these human rites of passage with a brevity, lightness of touch and quiet eloquence which evoked both longing and nostalgia in the reader.

Her style has the effect of a slow build and is rooted in a clear perception of character and set-

Directionless, defeated, down by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent

After nine defeats in thirteen league games Alex Neil is still in charge of Norwich City; a 2-1 defeat to bottom table Rotherham surely was going to be the cherry on the icing of the cake for the board to sack Neil however that is not the case.

Saturday’s defeat against Rotherham pushes City further and further away from the playoff spots, as automatic promotion is now something of a pipe dream.

Personally, I feel Neil should’ve been sacked

Cromer WI

Once again we had to start our January meeting with a minutes silence for another long standing member, Jill Jessop, who sadly passed away over the Christmas holidays.

Our speaker for January was Sandra Dalzell from Happisburgh Owls.

She has a private collection and shows them on a non profit making venture. She brought with her six of her 14 owls including ‘Dusk’ who is a very rare black tawny owl, the offspring of two white Tawny Owls.

She also had with her a Tawny Owl ‘Bracken’,

around late November, when things weren’t to late and we could’ve turned our season around. No longer in the dugout do I see the driven, no nonsense, ruthless character that was the Alex Neil of twenty months ago but instead a lost, clueless and tactically inept manager who has lost all of the fire that persuaded the club to bring him in two years ago.

Our downfall cannot be totally blamed on Neil however as Delia and the rest of the board seem to have no sense of direction as to where they want to be and what they want to achieve Northern White Faced Owl ‘Trouble, Bengal Eagle Owl ‘Shanti’, Barn Owl ‘Spirit’ and an Asian Brown Wood Owl ‘Acer’.

We were told how Sandra’s love of owls came about when she was given a baby owl that she managed to rear and is now 15 years old. Her birds are kept in aviaries in her garden and when not out at shows they fly free. She takes her birds to schools, all kinds of groups and mental health units where they give a lot of comfort and understanding. We learnt a lot of unusual facts about owls and at the end of the talk we were allowed to hold any of the owls.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Stephanie has been very busy on the ‘cat phone’ since the New Year and several more cats have been re-homed, including Pudding the lovely tabby and white girl featured last time.

Although quite a few of the calls have been for people offering homes to cats in our care, she receives lots of calls on other matters. Obviously people do contact us if, for whatever reason, they, or members of their family, can no longer care for their cat(s) and, after discussing the circumstances, these do go on our Waiting List. Other calls can be for people with cat behaviour/health related queries and, although she is sometimes able to help, obviously it is not always possible as the best person to talk to would be a vet and, in these circumstances, Stephanie will suggest you contact them.

Most of the other calls will relate to stray cats and, as we have previously explained, it is important to establish whether or not the cat is indeed a stray. This is not only for our benefit, but also for the benefit of the person who wishes us to take the cat into care. Stephanie therefore always suggests taking the cat to a vet to see whether or not it has been chipped and would also advise putting paper collars on to see if there is an owner out there. It is important for people to realise that a cat is regarded as a person’s property. This is one of the reasons why, when a stray is handed into our care, the person handing it in signs one of our Acceptance Forms.

in five years.

Most fans are lost and there is a toxic, poisonous atmosphere surrounding the club currently and the club needs an overhaul in many areas, I feel that we are too sentimental as a whole and the board aren’t being as ruthless as they should be and aren’t connecting with fans as they should be; Delia and co need to take action soon, otherwise things could soon start to turn very ugly. Ideas were discussed for outings in 2017 and tickets given out for the play at the Assembly Rooms in March. The President asked if there were any new clubs that members would like to set up and various options will be looked into. Birthday flowers were given out and the raffle was drawn. The competition was won by Dorothy Shannon with Eileen Tucker second and Frances Lee third.

Our speaker for February is James Begley on ‘The Role of the Community First Responders’. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

The form clearly indicates that we have taken the cat in good faith as a stray. If, at a future date, there is a dispute with regard to the ownership of the cat, we can refer the matter back to the person concerned. As the cat is the property of the original owner, the person handing it in could be charged under the Theft Act 1968 with handling stolen goods or obtaining property by deception. Instances of this happening are very rare but it is important to be aware of this. Because cats are known to visit other homes for food is would be very easy to consider that a visitor is a stray, when in fact it is just being a cat.
