Antony Little was appointed as headteacher at Cromer Academy before Easter, and took up post for the first day of the summer term.
Mr Little is an experienced teacher and school leader, having previously taught in London and in Norwich. Most recently he has had leadership positions at Notre Dame High School and The Hewett Academy. He is married to a teacher, and his three children mean that he has a full appreciation of school life from both the parental and professional perspectives.
Chair of governors Tim O'Shea said "This is a very exciting time for the school, with our growing academic reputation and forward-looking plans to transform our sporting facilities in partnership with North Norfolk District Council. "I am delighted to have Mr Little joining us to lead the academy as we continue to improve the education we provide to our town’s young people. "I am frequently impressed by the strong support that parents and the local community Newly Refurbished at give the academy, and I know that Mr Little will receive a warm welcome from pupils and parents alike." New Headteacher confirmed for Cromer Academy
34-40 Station road, Sheringham 01263 823258 blythwright@btconnect.com www.blythandwright.co.uk
Continued from front cover... Mr Little said "From working at another academy within the Inspiration Trust I'm very aware of the great improvements that have been made at Cromer Academy over the last few years, in particular becoming the top school in north Norfolk for pupil progress.
"I'm looking forward to working with colleagues, students, and families to build on the great work done by the team here under Dr Baker. There is a great community spirit at the school and in the town, and I'm sure that we will go on to achieve even greater things for our young people."
From Teacher to Playwright …
Stage Direct are about to showcase a new play by a new playwright to be performed in North Walsham.
The group would like to introduce their man David Starling as a talented writer who will join others from the group in complimenting their zest for home written works.
By day, David Starling works with children with autism as a class leader at St Andrew’s School in Aylmerton, near Cromer. Away from the classroom, however, David leads a very different existence. He acts with Stage Direct Theatre Company and with Black Cat Theatre and also writes.

Stage Direct have previously produced some of David’s work in the form of comedy sketches and short plays. This June (29 & 30) at the Atrium in North Walsham, Stage Direct will be producing, for the first time, a full length play written by David.
‘Good Morning, Mr Magpie’ is a Norfolk based play about Norfolk characters exploring the safety of home, the desire to chase dreams and all mixed in with a little bit of superstition and a helping of comedy.
David is just one more of the Stage Direct writer’s conveyor belt. Last year saw Stage Direct member Ashley Burgoyne’s comedy, ‘The Village Hall’, getting a great reception from an appreciative Atrium audience and plans are currently underway to air a comic play written by another member, Nigel Manson, in early 2019 in the little theatre. Chairman Derek Bull has written a screenplay and is presently putting the finishing touches to his novel while yet another Stage Direct actor, Melissa Collin, is a published poet.
There must be something in the water in North Norfolk!

THE STRAND CLUB
On a dreary misty, unspringlike day, we had a wonderful visit from Stephanie and Alison from the Seal and Shore Watch.
With the help of some lovely slides, Stephanie proceeded to tell us all about their work.
At present they are confined to the North Norfolk coast but their hopes are to extend further and to raise enough money to open their own sanctuary to prevent sick and injured seals having to travel for 40 minutes or so to the nearest one as they do at present.
The pups are weaned at just 3 weeks old, simply by the mother swimming back out to sea and leaving them on the beach. After about two weeks hunger drives the pups into the sea to begin fishing. They come on land if they are tired or sick, to digest their food, to mate and to give birth. So not all seals lying on the beach need our help. The trained vet medics of Seal Watch have to ascertain their condition which isn't easy, particularly as seals can and will give a very nasty bite which can take a year to heal as its saliva is so full of toxins.
One of Stephanie's favourites was Blixen who was rescued from the beach grossly underweight at just 18 kilos. He was shivering, dehydrated and very hungry. After just nine weeks at the Sanctuary his weight rose to a more respectable 45 kilos and he was well enough to be released. He turned up in Northumberland months later bursting with health and still sporting his tag which enabled him to be identified. His before and after pictures were heart-warming to see. The other side of the coin can be demonstrated by another pup who died through eating one crisp packet and it was a slow and painful death.
We were told about one of our North Norfolk characters, Salty George, who is a huge male seal. One of the Seal Watch team saw him on the beach apparently caressing a young pup. When he grew closer he saw the George had the pup in a tight grip and intended to eat it. The volunteer clapped his hands and shouted and Salty George dropped the pup and splashed back into the sea. The pup then managed to escape and hide safely. The volunteer, watching the pup, hadn't realised that Salty George had done a u-turn and was heading straight for him. He took to his heels and managed to out-run him! From a safe distance he saw that the pup was still safe and Salty George, though obviously furious, was returning to the sea once more!
It is imperative that dogs and children be kept well away from all seals, including the pups. Parents have been seen putting children on to the backs of pups to take a picture. People have been coming up close to take selfies and some let their dogs run free, scaring the seals and endangering the pups. Common sense must prevail when we're near to animals and birds of all kinds and seals in particular. It should be remembered that seals are wild with a short temper and to safeguard your pets and your family you must keep out of reach.
The beached whales some months ago were found to have stomachs full of plastic in all its forms. One even had a car part in his stomach. In the absence of deep water fishing, having taken the wrong turn at Scotland and ending up in the shallower North Sea, they tried to eat anything they found and it killed them.
We must all make every effort to use less plastic and clean up our coastline. There are regular litter-picks locally which wouldn't take long to join. Any effort is worth doing for all our wildlife. These creatures are so precious and they need our support.
We are grateful for Stephanie and Alison's visit and for all the things they showed us. It was a moving and informative afternoon and was very much enjoyed by all our members and visitors.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB
On Tuesday 3 April, Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club enjoyed a most informative talk by Chris Boxall, who has been a guide at Houghton Hall for 23 years, on the subject of ‘Houghton Hall and Walpole’.
Chris pointed out that Sir Robert Walpole remains the longest-serving prime minister in British history, and was the first English minister to occupy 10 Downing Street.
Besides recounting the vicissitudes of Walpole’s career, Chris outlined the history of Houghton Hall and how the current Hall, on Walpole’s instructions, is the third to have been built on the site - with new stables and a new village as well! There are three statues, representing justice, oratory and wisdom all, apparently, things that Walpole associated with himself!
In 1976 the Hall was opened to the public for the first time. Currently there are works by Damien Hirst on display - those inside the Hall are temporarily replacing the normal collection of Walpole family portraits. Full details are on the Hall’s website. The talk was very well received and Chris was thanked by Chairman, Jack Broughton.
Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 1 May, when our speaker will be Arthur Bailey on ‘Confessions of a Coach Driver’. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or business man and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

Our guest speaker for April was Julie Kirkham from Alby Stained Glass.
Julie gave an entertaining and informative talk about how she started in glass work 34 years ago. She also does Copper Foil work, Leadwork and Fusing. The most expensive coloured glass can cost £450 a square metre. As she was talking she made a glass wren from 5 coloured shapes of glass. Julie soldered the pieces together effortlessly as she spoke, then kindly donated it to our raffle.
We had 41 ladies present including a new member. Our competition this month was an item beginning with the letter “Y”. The winner was Myra Hobbs, second place was joint between Jill Betz and Yvonne Hoggarth and Frances Lee was third.
We will be discussing the resolution for the National Annual Meeting in May. The resolution chosen from a short list of five is Mental Health Matters.
We are looking forward to hosting a fashion show in May with clothes by the Edinburgh Woollen Mill with some of our members acting as models for the evening.
The Book Club have been reading the ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society’ and hope to visit the local cinema to see the film. We have other groups during the month including Darts, 10 Pin Bowling, Drama and Sewing.
We welcome visitors and prospective members to our monthly meetings on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall, Garden Street.
PET CT SCANNING ARRIVES IN NORTH WALSHAM!
Regular visitors to Toll Barn Vets will have noticed the recent building works and we are delighted to announce the specialist extension has been designed to house our very own on-site CT Scanner!
CT scanners use radiation in the same way as x-rays but allow a complete 3D image of the pet with specialised software then allowing advanced reconstructions including 3D skeletal, blood vessel and soft tissue reconstructions. CT scanners have thousands of applications within veterinary care and are the best (and sometimes only) method of diagnosing and assessing the optimal treatment options for some forms of orthopaedic disorders such as elbow dysplasia, complex fractures, bone tumours and limb growth deformities. CT scanning also provides for improved tumour management as they are much more sensitive than conventional x-ray in the search for tumour spread, assessing the 3D boundaries of the tumour to allow precise surgical removal. CT scanning also provides for better identification of nasal disease including tumour, fungal infection, bacterial infection and foreign bodies; ear disease including middle ear disease; lung disease including infection, tumour, foreign bodies and trauma damage; neurological conditions including imaging of the spine, spinal cord and brain.
Our CT scanner is a very specialised machine which is able to image all species of pets from the smallest lizard to the largest dogs. Currently, the nearest alternative CT scanner for pets is over an hour away which means many pets require referral to other practices to allow advanced imaging with CT scanners to assist in diagnosis and treatment.
We are delighted with our recent CT scanner addition and after our intensive specialist training have already been making use of it to help treat pets under our care. As CT scanners are so few and far between the addition of our on-site CT scanner marks a big investment and improvement in the standard of care currently accessible to local pets and owners. To find out more about our CT scanning service please contact the Toll Barn Vets team on 01692 407126.

Family Law Update
from Clapham & Collinge Family Law Solicitor Neale Grearson
The rumours have started that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are having a Pre-Nuptial Agreement drawn up. No idea what may be in it and Clapham & Collinge have not yet been instructed! This news has been met with a lot of interest and a realism about the need for such a document.
Apparently Prince Harry is worth about £30 million and Meghan about £4 million. Not entirely therefore a financial "level playing field" and exactly the type of relationship that cries out for a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. Of course everyone hopes that their marriage will last forever but all marriages (including royal ones) are not guaranteed to do so. A report in the Daily Telegraph from December 2017 suggested that enquiries about Pre-Nuptial Agreements in this country had risen by about 70% in the last decade. Perhaps more staggeringly the same survey revealed that apparently about 21% of engaged couples who enquired about a PreNuptial Agreement called off their wedding after speaking to their lawyers!
Pre-Nuptial Agreements remain not guaranteed to be legally enforceable but increasingly are being taken into account. Whether you are talking about combined assets of £34 million or more modest figures does it not make sense to try to safeguard and ring fence assets that have been built up before a marriage? Increasingly relationships and marriages are not as straightforward as they were in the past. For example second or third marriages are now more common than they were a generation ago. Inherited wealth and money provided by parents can mean that when a couple get married their financial position is unequal. Should they not have the ability (and business acumen) to consider the eventualities and agree what would happen if they do divorce given that now nearly one in two marriages end in divorce? Does that throw cold water on the romance or is it just realism? So whether you are royalty or not a Pre-Nuptial Agreement as part of the wedding plan is becoming increasingly standard practice.
to have a traditional marriage have argued that there is now inequality in the law as they do not have the choice to become Civil Partners. The plans are to publish a consultation on this to determine the effect of changes on other areas of legislation such as divorce law. Within this other changes are being considered such as the marriage "register" itself being replaced by a new single page "marriage schedule". Couples might no longer be given a "marriage certificate" on the day of the wedding and a single electronic register will replace the current system of registers being held in churches. The proposed reforms are within a back bench private members' bill in the House of Commons that the Government unexpectedly announced it was going to support. Tim Loughton who

Marriage – Lite or Just Adapting to a Changed World
Currently Civil Partnerships are only available to same sex couples. Since the introduction of same sex marriage the debate has been taking place as to what should happen to Civil Partnerships. Should they be abolished or should they be available to opposite sex couples? The Home Office is now reviewing the operation of Civil Partnerships.
introduced the reforms said "we need to recognise that our society is changing and we need to adapt in order to promote family stability – in whatever form – to provide a continuum that gives children the best and most stable start in life." Colin Hart the Chairman of the Coalition for Marriage Campaign Group said extending Civil Partnerships to opposite sex couples will "profoundly undermine marriage. It will be seen as a low commitment form of the institution – a sort of marriage lite."

Family Fun day to celebrate Norfolk Wildlife
Trust’s newest reserve at Pigneys Wood, a local nature reserve within walking distance of North Walsham, has just joined the Norfolk Wildlife Trust ‘family’.
To celebrate, the Trust is holding an Open Day with fun for all ages on Sunday 29 April, 11am – 3pm. Attractions include a storyteller, guided walks, minibeast hunting and woodland craft demonstrations. All are welcome and it’s completely free.
Despite the name this site is much more than a wood. It has a reed bed and several ponds, as well as lovely open, grassy meadows, and benches with one of the best views in Norfolk! This is a place that owes its existence to the local community, having been bought by a group of local people who formed the North Norfolk Community Woodland Trust and planted over 20,000 trees. 24 years later it has now been handed over to Norfolk Wildlife Trust to secure its future for everyone to enjoy.
The site has a number of special wildlife features for everyone to enjoy, including an impressive 450-year-old ancient oak tree ‘the Old Oak’ which is next to a small woodland area which boasts a carpet of bluebells in spring. Pigneys Wood provides an important wildlife refuge for

The Museum has been thoughtfully put together and is decorated by a number of handmade poppies produced by some of our volunteers and friends, commemorating relatives who served.

Aldborough School says Hip Hip Hare-ratio!
Village’s GoGoHare is a colourful critter with ‘tails’ to tell, out to raise funds for charity. Hare-atio is a GoGoHare with tales (tails?) to tell. The school and community of Aldborough in North Norfolk combined to create a colourful critter that’s based on the schoolchildren’s favourite books.
Hare-atio is a baby GoGoHare (or leveret) and is part of the GoGoCreate project with Norfolk children’s charity Break and Wild in Art. Lucy, who is ten years old, says, “I really like the hare, it shows what our school is about. It’s really colourful and includes books, because we have a lovely library and reading is really important to us.
governors and members of the community all worked collaboratively to create him. Children’s fingerprints made his fur; their names and faces made the grass; they wrote

She adds, “We wanted a GoGo Hare who shared our passion for reading and our love of Norfolk – his name is a reference to our country’s famous hero, Horatio Nelson, of course. Plus we wanted him to have real character – and Hare-atio certainly has that.
Thomas, aged nine, says “I think Hare-atio is fantastic. I like the Shakespeare buttons, and the books on his hat, which shows how much we like reading. I voted for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows because I love the Harry Potter series, I shared the book with my mum, it is the most exciting book I’ve ever read.

Cromer Gardening Festival - 19 May Crab and Lobster festival fringe in North Lodge Park The Crab and Lobster Festival is a lively weekend celebration. Now into its 9th year it has become a major fixture on the Cromer calendar drawing many thousands of visitors to the town. It is a feast of fun, food, art, heritage and entertainment, with a wide range of events and activities. The festival celebrates local links with the sea over the festival weekend, this year May 19 - 20 May. The fun starts on Friday night with a traditional seaside variety concert at the Famous Pier Pavilion Theatre in Cromer and continues over the weekend. For 2018 there is a new fringe festival on Saturday 19 May - a Gardening Festival to be held in North Lodge Park in Cromer. This event will build on the enormous success of the Crab and Lobster Festival, providing the thousands of visitors with additional activities and extending the festival across the town.
During the day there will be numerous gardening
themed events for all from experienced gardeners to young gardeners, with a range of gardening related stalls, including plant specialists, selling a range of plants and other products for the garden.
“There will be a plant swap area for gardeners who may have too many dahlias and want some delphiniums or want to swap a couple of asters for some antirrhinum” said Val McCampling who looks after the Park gardening volunteers. “Most gardeners have an excess of some plants and really want something else. We thought the gardening festival would be a great forum for gardeners to swap plants as well as ideas”.
Gardening volunteers are creating a show garden on the Park, like Chelsea Flower Show gardens which happens to open straight after the Cromer festival, highlighting some of the plants that grow well on the north Norfolk Coast. “We've designed the garden to show which plants
are suitable for this north facing coastal position” said Jim Bond from Cromer in Bloom who have designed the garden. “We'll be on hand all day to discuss the ideas behind the show garden”
The Bucket List from Overstrand will be at the festival selling their ever-popular hand-cut chips with bespoke toppings, the Park cafe - Crepes and Cakes - will be open all day. For those in need after a long day in Cromer, the Massage Hut will be at the festival offering holistic massage.
There will be a range of creative activities for children including making a mini-scarecrow or lighthouse. There will also be a sunflower competition, where entrants will help the garden volunteers in the Park by planting a sunflower – the tallest of which in the summer will be awarded a prize. If you would like more information about the Gardening Festival contact the Friends of North Lodge Park at friends@northlodgepark.org.uk or visit the website at northlodgepark.org.uk.
Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds MCZ – next steps Public encouraged to take part in survey
A group interested in the future of the Cromer Shoal Chalk Beds (CSCB) Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) is encouraging people to take part in a survey so their opinions are heard on the topic.
In January 2016 the CSCB MCZ was designated, covering 321km2 of local seabed including the chalk beds. A community questionnaire, published by the group Agents of Change, is now available to gather people’s thoughts about the next stage of the MCZ project, which is implementation of a management strategy. Before any management is implemented, there will be public consultation later in 2018 to give the public the opportunity to have their say about how the MCZ should be managed.
John Lee, a local fisherman, said “We welcome the MCZ, the pristine nature of the chalk bed just goes to show how well as fishermen we treat the sea bed and care for our environment. “Our only concern is that no management measures are introduced without complete consultation with the fishermen, we are after all professionals and we know the waters inside out.” The Agents of Change project seeks to attract and amplify all local voices in support of making the most of all the opportunities the MCZ and its management presents.
If you would like to get involved contact Hilary Cox at hilary.cox22@gmail.com.
The survey can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/QCHHWPZ.
The questionnaire will help people understand more about that approaching consultation. The CSCB is off the coast from Weybourne to Happisburgh. These beds form an extensive reef, a special, unique feature that stretches 23 miles in length and reaches 3 nautical miles out to sea. The reef was sculpted during the Ice Age, formed by a vast number of compressed pre-historic fossilised plankton. The chalk covers 30km2 and ranges from 0-20 metres in depth. It can be seen at low tide from the cliff path from Sheringham to East Runton and is believed to be the largest chalk bed in Europe. Marine life is abundant, home to 350 species including 30 species of sea slug and a purple sponge, a new species discovered in 2011 by Dr Claire Goodwin. Shoaling fish such as bib and bass are also a common sight, the smaller species providing crucial food for local seabirds.
Local fishermen have been catching crabs and lobsters from this area for a long time and it is widely accepted that it is down to their expertise that the chalk bed is in the healthy condition it is today. It was fishermen of the previous generation who requested a No Trawl Zone over the area to protect it and that bye-law still stands.

Cromer and District Garden Society
Our March meeting was taken up with our members’ Spring Show.
Twenty two members entered exhibits which was very pleasing given the strange weather we had been having in the run up to the show.
The section for daffodils and tulips was won by Maggie Clover, Monica Gepp won the section for other plants and Moira Harding was best in the handicraft and cookery section. Well done to the winners and a big thank you to all those present who made the evening such a success.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 9 May at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Simon Harrap from ‘Natural Surroundings’ near Blandford is an expert on wild orchids and wild flowers and his topic, ‘Wild Flowers in the Garden – Friend or Foe’, should be full of good ideas on how to accommodate wild flowers in the more formal setting of domestic gardens. Visitors will be warmly welcomed. Cost £2. 14
Hedgehog Haven
At last with some milder weather, it has been very busy here with lots of hogs being picked up and taken off to be released.
At the time of writing nine have successfully gone back to the wild, with more to go next week.
A busy weekend is coming up, to mark the start of Hedgehog Awareness Week. I will be at Bure Valley Railway Aylsham on Saturday 5 May and Hadfields Garden Centre in North Walsham on Sunday 6 and Monday 7 May.
It is with sadness that I have to report that Willow has passed away peacefully in her sleep. The pigment was gone from her feet and nose, a sign of old age, so I feel that was the cause of her passing.
Apologies to her finder for not letting you know personally but you left me the wrong phone number so I could not contact you.
With Spring here at last, hedgehogs should be out and about looking for tasty morsels. Please leave out a shallow dish of kitten (meat flavour) biscuits and even more important a shallow dish of water if you possibly can.

Wednesday Night is Croquet Night How many North Norfolk croquet sets lie forlorn and forgotten in garden sheds? What a delight it would be if they were resurrected. Think of the endless entertainment to the owners and their families during our balmy summer evenings!
To encourage this development Bodham Croquet Club are this year encouraging people to take up Garden Croquet. The Club invites everyone to their TRY-IT sessions on Wednesday evenings.
Games of croquet come in many different forms – often a family will make up their own ‘house’ rules. But there is an ‘official’ set of rules for garden croquet, recognised nationally, and to be seen at www.croquet.org.uk/?p=games/garden/rules/garden rules. These are the rules we will be using. They are a simplified version of the traditional game, designed to be played on a relatively small lawn. Even simplified, like many game rules, these are not that easy to understand. But do not despair! Come to our Wednesday sessions, either as a complete beginner or as a “returner”, and all will be revealed!
