Julie Arrowsmith Sales Director at GTK said “We are all pleased to be sponsoring the Cromer Soapbox Derby I have heard a lot about the course jump and I’m looking forward to seeing the racing action”. She continued, “We wish this year’s event every success and all hope that the will continue to grow year on year”. Westcotec Traffic Safety Systems based in Dereham, Norfolk is a leading technology company based in the East of England, specialising in the manufacture of vehicle activated signs and a wide range of energy efficient products designed to help keep people safe on the road. Seneye based in Norwich specialise in water quality monitoring systems for fish tanks and ponds. The Seneye dramatically improves the frequency, accuracy, sensitivity, and robustness of water allowing fish keepers to truly understand what happens inside their aquarium or pond by monitoring the harmful parameters, which aren’t detectable to the human eye.

Entry forms are available from The Cottage, Louden Road, Cromer or online at www.cromercarnival.co.uk Entries close on 28 July but late entries could be accepted on the day if they arrive for the scrutineering at 11.30am. Racing starts at 1pm with the 3 classes racing to become the fastest soapbox of the day. Classes are 10 – 15 years, 16 -18 years and Adult.

There will be prizes for the fastest time in each class with the fastest soapbox also winning the Malcolm McGreadie Shield, which the winner hold for the year. There is also a Concourse de Elegance competition with winners in each class being judged on the design of their soapbox and the driver’s costume. The Sporting Car Club of Norfolk will be providing the timing and scrutineering for the event and are planning to bring along a number of cars for a static display. It’s a real fun day out and there will no doubt be a few thrills and spills but that is what the event is all about trying to beat the course and your fellow competitors while entertaining the crowds to become the fastest soapbox of the day.

Raising Funds for The Countryside Restoration Trust

Eddie Bullimore and Lynn Frarey are now fundraising for The Countryside Restoration Trust, having previously successfully raised nearly £20.000 for Songbird Survival.

The Countryside Restoration Trust protects not only birds but all wildlife, wild flowers, trees, insects, everything with nature but most importantly educates children – including school visits, making beetle banks, growing their own plants, studying red squirrels, birdwatching so many things for them to learn about nature.

We are holding yard sales with the generosity of the public and will hopefully be successful in raising as much money as possible.

We hope the public will continue to support us with our new charity.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

A team from Cromer made up of Jenny Pawson, Irene Nutt and Jennifer Andrews won the annual gardening quiz held with our friends from the Sheringham and Hoveton/Wroxham societies.

Thirteen teams from the three societies took part so competition was intense.

Hoveton/Wroxham were the hosts this year and we were made very welcome by their members. This is the second year running that a Cromer team has won the quiz so well done to them. We are hosting next year’s quiz and it is to be hoped that our winning run can be continued.

The speaker at our June meeting was Jaime Blake from Bressingham Gardens. Jaime has worked at Bressingham for thirty years so who

better to take us on a trip “Around the World in 80 Plants”. Snowdrops, alliums and hardy geraniums originate from Northern Europe, wood anemones, salvias and asters were introduced from Italy and many irises and acanthus have come from Greece. A garden favourite – alchemilla mollis also known as Lady’s mantle – hellebores and the magnificent fritillaria imperialis originated in Turkey. Red hot pokers come from Sudan. The journey continued through Asia from where plant hunters in the 19th century brought back many grasses and ferns from Northern India, hostas and paeonies from China and astilbes from Japan. Garden favourites such as heleniums, rudbeckia and phlox as well as the cursed leylandii are natives of North America. We were given details of more than 80 plants in the

course of the evening and many tips on the best way to get the best out of those mentioned. It is because of our temperate climate that we are able to grow plants from all over the world and this is something gardeners should keep in mind when complaining about the vagaries of the British weather.

Next an apology. The plant shown on the front of the last but one issue should have been labelled as red campion and not purple wood anemone. I put this down to the declining faculties of yours truly and to no one else.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 11 July at 7.30 pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Ian Roofe has been a regular speaker at our meetings and his topic is “Plants of the Moment”. He is very entertaining as well as being very knowledgeable so it should be a good evening. Visitors are very welcome. Cost £2.

Students get council backing for green plans

Students from Cromer Academy have put forward their ideas for a greener school and town in a meeting with North Norfolk District Council’s cabinet member for the environment.

concern them.

Students also outlined their plans to make the school more eco-friendly by recycling more and ditching single-use plastics – a scheme supported by Mrs Cox, who hopes to supply the school with new recycling bins.

Members of the student council raised issues such as graffiti, pot holes, and the condition of Cromer’s skate park with NNDC councillor Hilary Cox when she visited the school on Wednesday, 6 June.

Mrs Cox promised to raise the issues with the District Council, and encouraged students to continue speaking up about issues that

Wills & LPAs LPAs Wills UST H –AM MUST HAVE AVE

At Silver and Ward we pride ourselves in giving our clients peace of mind with our expert legal advice explained in plain English. We work extremely hard during our lives to provide for family and loved ones. However, the majority of us fail to ensure that continues if we become unwell, or when we pass away. So, how can you guarantee that? (1) LPAs (Lasting Power of Attorney) – are a safety net for you and your loved ones if you were to be involved in an accident, or have a diagnosis leading to diminished mental capacity. It is incredibly important to have them in place no matter how old you are. As surprising as it sounds, your spouse, or partner, does not have any legal right to make health decisions on your behalf, or deal with your money and property if you are unable to.

(2 ) Wills – can help you to secure a future for those you leave behind. If you do not leave a Will the Law decides who will inherit your estate. This may not be what you want and it is unlikely to provide adequately for your family. A Will prepared by Silver and Ward can provide reassurance and peace of mind for you and your family and help reduce any risks and pitfalls that may arise in the future. We will write it in plain English to avoid any misunderstandings. We offffer fixed fees for Wills and LPAs so you know immediately how much it is going to cost and a FREE INITIAL APPOINTMENT. We can meet with you in your home, Nursing Home, or Hospital at no extra cost.

Dear Margaret,

Mundesley Library Friends (MLF) are looking for more volunteers to help out at events staged at the Library.

Re-formed last year, MLF have received funding from the Parish Council and are currently compiling a list of events (for children and adults) over the coming year.

The programme will include talks (both by authors and others on a wide range of topics), children’s workshops and competitions, stalls at village events etc.

The MLF committee has been working to provide a varied series of events but we are now looking to recruit people who can help on the day of events – such as setting up for the event, looking after people attending, serving refreshments, taking down after events etc.

There is no fixed time as events may be weekdays or weekends, daytime or evenings but we would like to get a list of volunteers who may be able to help at one or more events.

MLF aims to increase awareness of the library and its range of services and to promote events of interest to all which will be held at the library.

If you feel you could help out please contact us via Steve Whitby – whitbyfamily2003@yahoo.co.uk – or by talking to staff in the library. How much or how little you are able to do is up to you and all offers of help would be gratefully received.

Orchestra visit is music to young ears

Students at Cromer Academy have been inspired to pick up an instrument during a special concert and live music workshop. Musicians from Norfolk Music Hub visited Cromer Academy to play for students earlier this month.

They performed pieces from across musical history, from classical composers such as Vivaldi and Dvorak up to Ed Sheeran and the Doctor Who theme.

During the concert the musicians introduced students to their instruments, which included cello, violin,

saxophone, and flute.

The visit was organised by Inspiration Trust director of music John Stephens as part of Norfolk Music Hub’s Live Music Week, which visits schools to inspire young people to get involved in music.

Cromer Academy Headteacher Antony Little said “It is fantastic to work in partnership with the Norfolk Music Hub and bring a live orchestra to play for Cromer students. They will have learnt so much from seeing instruments performed live and to see and hear how musical styles have developed over 500 years”.

“Music is at the heart of our school and we hope this inspires students to get involved at any stage and any level.”

Crab Fishing Boat calls out Cromer RNLI

Cromer RNLI was asked to launch its inshore lifeboat earlier this month when a request had come in from a local crab fishing boat, which had engine problems.

Once the crew had been paged, the ‘George and Muriel’, Cromer’s D class inshore lifeboat was launched. Weather conditions were still with the breeze from the North East, the sea state was Photo: Paul Russell flat.

The crew were soon on scene just opposite the old Lighthouse and assistance was given to the fishermen.

By 11.55am the inshore lifeboat had returned to its station, was washed down refuelled and made ready for its next launch.

It was a special occasion for RNLI Cromer as it was the first outing for Matt Hardy – who had recently finished his training to be a volunteer.

Cromer WI

Our June speaker was Jean Clarke who entertained us with a talk called ‘Face Yoga and Laughter’. Everyone is happier when they are laughing and our bodies can’t tell the difference between fake and real laughter, both have the same benefits. There was certainly lots of fun and laughter in the hall as we joined in with rubbing magic cream on our faces, clapping songs and face yoga positions including ‘Sad Giraffe’.

At our next meeting on 12 July we will be remembering the Suffragettes who 100 years ago won the right for some women to vote. All members are invited to wear purple/white/ green which are the colours associated with the movement. It is also our 81st Birthday meeting.

Our competition was an item beginning with the letter A. We had an Apple, an Alstroemeria, Aluminium Foil and a glass Alsatian amongst the many entries. Rosie Evans came 1st, Ann Baker 2nd with Carol Denton 3rd.

Visitors will be given a warm welcome on 2nd Thursday of the month (except August) in the Cromer Community Hall, Garden Street at 2pm. Cromer Times 544 June 30th 2018

St Andrews Methodist Church Special 50th Anniversary ‘Golden Moments’ Flower Festival

Flower arrangers from towns and villages all over North Norfolk are busily planning for arguably the district’s premier flower festival which takes place at St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham from Thursday 5 July to Sunday 8 July.

The annual festival started as a one-day event nearly 50 years ago to raise funds for the building of the church and has since grown to a four-day event which has become a major event for both the church and the town, regularly attracting around 3000 visitors with several coach parties and many planning their holidays around the festival dates.

Each year the talented flower arrangers design their floral displays to a specific theme with exceptional attention to detail and creativity. Last year’s theme was ‘Music in Bloom’ and our photos illustrate just how cleverly they interpret the theme.

This year is the 50th Anniversary of the church and to crown the many events that have been planned to celebrate this historic milestone an extra special festival is being organised with a theme ‘Golden Moments’. Floral displays will represent special times and events in people’s lives, significant national and international landmarks and last, but not least, highlights in St. Andrew’s history. Twenty eight arrangements will be presented with titles such as ‘Fall of the Berlin Wall’, ‘The Poppy Line’, ‘Rescue by Lifeboat’, ‘Holding a New Born Baby’, ‘The Channel Tunnel’, ‘Celebration of Flower Festivals’, ‘Noah’s Ark’ and many more.

Throughout the Festival background music, played by organists both local and further afield add to the ambiance of the event.

The Festival will be opened on Thursday 5 July at 10am by the Mayor of Sheringham, Madeline Ashcroft and daily opening/closing times will be 10am to 5pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 12noon to 5pm on Sunday. Holy Communion will take place from 9.15am on the Festival Friday and Festival worship will take place at 10.30am on Sunday 8 with a special Festival Praise service at 5.30pm. The church is wheelchair friendly and has disabled toilet and baby changing facilities. Further details of this year`s and historical festivals, where to find us plus much more information on St Andrews Church in general can be found on our website http://www.sheringhammethodist.org.uk We look forward to extending a warm welcome to visitors to our festival.

Cromer Group Practice & Cromer Pharmacy Mill Road, Cromer, NR27 0BG

In addition to being amazed by the floral arrangements visitors will be able to browse the many stalls offering a superb variety of plants, jigsaws, books, arts & crafts, souvenirs and gifts, jewellery, Stained glass art, Christian books, Fair Trade, quality bric-a-brac, a raffle, quality cards and various quizzes. A children’s activity table on the Saturday and Sunday of the festival should keep the children happy and a prayer space will be available for those wishing quiet reflection.

Catering forms a major part of the Festival with light lunches, cream teas and an extensive choice of cakes on offer. Overall a visit to St Andrew`s Flower Festival is a thoroughly enjoyable way to pass a few hours.

Entry to the festival is free but donations are gratefully accepted. Proceeds from the festival go to church funds but each year a sizeable donation is given to a local charity. Last year around £1000 was donated to Sheringham Age Concern and this year Sheringham Lifeboat will be the beneficiary.

The Strand Club

It wasn't too hot and it wasn't too cold. It was just right! The Strand Club's annual outing was blessed with perfect weather with not a spot of rain and comfortable temperatures which enabled us to explore to our heart's content.

We were taken to Gressenhall Workhouse Museum and Farm by Wrights Coaches, driven by the expert Matt. We hadn't used Wrights before but having been recommended to them, decided to give them a try. How pleased we were!

Matt arrived promptly to collect us at Overstrand and went on to pick up three more of our ladies in Cromer. We then set off, travelling down the beautiful green lanes of Norfolk before arriving, exactly on time, at Gressenhall.

We had time for a wander around the beautiful gardens and in and out of the little cottage, forge and school, furnished as they would have been in Victorian times, before regrouping in the conservatory for a splendid buffet lunch. The farm was our next port of call and having

admired the 11 black piglets, born at the end of May and behaving like puppies with their tumbling and play fighting, we took a ride in a cart drawn by two beautiful Suffolk Punches. They were steady and content, ambling round the small walkways and narrow lanes of the farm complex. Even when we passed two of their friends in a field they didn't react - no whinnying or shying.

A gentle walk back in the sunshine to the workhouse and museum set us up for some of the harrowing tales we read there. Families were split into separate houses, women and young children in one, men and older boys in another. They were fed just enough to keep them alive and able to work. They slept on thin straw mattresses on metal bedframes. They were locked up in a cell for refusing to work or for answering back. But amongst all that there were some uplifting stories. There was a family, depicted in statues outside the main door, where a father had to leave most of his children there when he was widowed. A heartbreaking decision. Years later though when he was settled and able to support them, he came back for them and the family was

reunited. After a visit to the gift shop and an ice cream we boarded the coach

for our return trip. Matt once again drove us carefully and efficiently home.

We can highly recommend Wrights Coaches for anyone who wishes to hire coach and driver - they have a range of different sized vehicles on offer.

Altogether a wonderful day, much enjoyed by everyone and one we will remember with pleasure.

Our next meeting will take place on 11 July at the Sports Pavilion. As always we begin at 2pm and entrance for visitors is just £2 which includes light refreshments. Our speaker this month will be a representative from Ben's Workforce, a branch of the Benjamin Foundation. The Workforce help anyone in need of jobs to be done indoors or out which they cannot do themselves. It should be very informative. Please come along and share it with us. All are welcome.

Cromer Pier Show

Now in its 41st year, this remarkable show has, over the years, spurned some great talent Bradley Walsh, Darren Day, Tucker, Steve Hewlett, Danny Posthill and just this year on Britain’s Got Talent, Mandy Muden and Ben Langley. The list goes on and it is certain that the Cromer Pier Show will continue to produce stars of the future.

Versatile vaudevillian duo, Zooka and Suzie Q are unique, rather whirlwind eccentric, and very visual comedy illusionists. A combination of colourful

Children from Marlene’s School of Dancing are as much a part of the show as the main cast providing the ‘Ah’ factor at the same time as delivering dance routines that show them to be the talent of the future.

A real variety show in every sense of the word this year’s show brings together a wealth of talent with most of the cast appearing on the Pavilion Theatre’s famous stage for the first time.

Headlining this year’s show is comedian Steve Terry, described as a brilliant comedian with an amazing voice. His smart, easy going and affable style is sure to delight Cromer Pier Show audiences As well as being an accomplished stand-up comedian Steve is a gifted vocalist allowing him to create a unique and memorable act.

The man known a ‘G’ is, as his name suggests, a quirky, zany comedy impersonator with, as he says, “an excellent singing voice but the wild card in his act is his huge repertoire of voices from James Blunt to Jo Cocker, Louis Armstrong to the Bee Gees. There are nods to Monty Python and the Muppets and comedy legends including

members of the show, stunning routines from ballet to tap and modern dance created by choreographer Di Cooke. The Seaside Special dancers are Sian Brown, Gemma Foulkes, Emily Hardy, Jasmine Ottley, Conner Crowcroft and Mason Hargreaves.

All the cast are dressed to impress in colourful costumes designed by Laura Whyte, outstanding sets designed by Ian Westbrook of 3D Creations, and amazing lighting imagined by Amanda Hill and together will give you a show to remember.

costumes, mind-boggling stage illusions, sleight of hand and beautiful bird magic will leave audiences spellbound.

The stunning voice of Emily Yarrow will once again grace the Pavilion Theatre stage as Emily returns for her third summer season in Cromer. A trained opera singer Emily has delighted audiences in both the summer and Christmas shows. Making a welcome return to Cromer is male vocalist Harvey James who first appeared in Cromer in 2006.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

In the past few months we have had successful street collections in Holt at Budgens, in Cromer at Morrisons and the Co-Op on Holt Road, and will shortly be collecting in Sheringham. Before this we are holding a tombola stall on Ottendorf Green in Sheringham. All monies raised are for our charity this year, which is the British Heart Foundation. Thank you to all the shops who have allowed us to collect and to the public for donating so generously, not to mention our Lions’ friends for standing patiently in all weathers with their buckets.

Our really big fund raiser will be held on Sunday 2 September at Mannington Estate from 11am until 5pm. This will be a charity Fun Day for the Jenny Lind Childrens’ Hospital at the N&NUH. There will be fun for all ages, including clowns and a circus workshop, face painting, classic vehicles, hot and cold food, a beer tent, a barbeque and much more. There will also be several charity stalls and a tombola.

Join us for this lovely day out at a beautiful stately home, ÂŁ6 a ticket with under 16s free and concessions at ÂŁ5. Parking is free.

We hope to pay for a Portable ECG machine on this day to help sick children. More about this later.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

Jeff (Dad) and Emily (Daughter) Bowyer of Cromer, would like to say the biggest THANK YOU, to all that supported them in Sponsorship, and messages, in their quest to complete the London Marathon. Despite searing heat, and an old injury resurfacing for Emily at 14 miles, they stuck at it, and crossed the line together, to complete a very emotional but rewarding, task. Jeff said "The London Marathon is one of those special days in your lives, and I would encourage anyone, to give it a go. It is an amazing atmosphere, with the crowds being off the scale. They encourage you, when you are mentally and physically drained, and it is a privilege to be apart of such an occasion. We also had family members, at various points around the course, which was a real boost. To be able to complete it with one of my daughters, was a very special moment, and is something I will never forget." Jeff is very confident , that will be the last time he gets into the same race as Mo Farah. "The only time we were in the same postcode, was at the start" said Jeff, although Emily is in the full flush of Youth, and has applied to do it all again next year!

There was another purpose to their day, and that was to raise funds for Lymphoma Action. With fantastic backing by many many people (some international!), they managed to get way beyond the figure they hoped for, and with a little bit more sponsorship to be collected, they have managed to raise over £4,600 for a Charity, which is close to the family's heart.

Jeff and Emily would like to make special mention to the people of Cromer and North Norfolk, the customers of Cromer Gift Shop, North Walsham Rugby Club, Very Nice Things Gift Shop of Reepham and Woodlands Leisure Centre at Bodham for their generosity and support. A VERY special mention to one of their friends, Pam Daley, who had a Guinness and Prosecco available for them, within a couple of minutes of crossing the line. The Sports Scientists would not recommend those to be the choice for re-hydration, but at that point Jeff and Emily could not have cared less!

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

The men’s EBA team continue to battle for points and Bob, Les, Andrew and David M secured one with a 16-15 victory on their rink against Reepham Nomads. However, 2 defeats by the narrowest of margins meant a 1-4 loss, 48-53. They fared no better at top of the table Fakenham with a 0-5, 33-67 defeat, but at least the weather was warm! Most recently a massive 30-98 defeat at RG Carter did nothing to improve the league situation. The only way is up!

News from the Club House ...

Having lost several quality players in the last few years it was always going to be a struggle in the leagues this season. And so it is proving at the half way point of the season, so far, with Cromer being the ‘strongest’ team, holding up all the rest (!), in all 3 leagues. Still members are continuing to play and support without complaint and enjoying the few successes when they happen.

The Bank holiday mist enveloped the green as we entertained ‘Friends United’, a group of clubs from the Newark area. In a close game on 6 rinks Cromer were defeated 113-118 with our winning rink of Steve, Jack, Russell and Neil C helping the cause.

The weather didn’t change for the visit of Rushymead BC from Leicester. They joined us for an entertaining ‘spoon drive’ won by David G with Bob a close 2nd. The ‘booby’ prize was ‘won’ by Captain Keith, hardly deserved! The following days friendly triples was a very close affair on 4 rinks. Rushymead winning two, Cromer one and one drawn. However, Cromers other winning rink of Bob, Andrew and Tabitha gave us a 90-72 victory.

Longthorpe BC, from Peterborough, made their annual ‘pilgrimage’ to compete in the Crab Trophy against us. This match has been challenged for over at least 10 years and Cromer held off the challenge to retain the trophy for another year. The winning rink involved Bob, President Philip, Russell and Ann in an overall score of 117-95.

The annual Ladies v Gentlemen ‘challenge’ was contested with fewer players this year but nevertheless was just as fierce and fun! Whisper it loudly but the men won on all 3 rinks if only by 1 and 2 shots on 2 rinks. However, David M, Steve and Neil P showed no respect with a 29-10 victory. The overall score being Ladies 38, Gentlemen 60. The EBF Crabs team entertained Holt at home and were defeated 2-7, with one winning rink of Jackie, David G and Neil P. Away at Cawston Cromer battled hard but went down 0-9, 40 shots to 60 over the 3 rinks. It was much the same at home v Fakenham with a massive defeat in a 0-9

scoreline.

Congratulations must go to Jean N and her team for the first league win of the season in the NANSA league. A 6-2 victory at Suffield Park was well received.

Cromer continue to display their better form for cup matches. In the 2nd round of the NANSA 3 wood cup they travelled to North Walsham Tungate and left with a 54-49 first leg advantage, with the outstanding rink being James, Tony and Neil P. However, in the mixed Jermy Cup 2nd round they had to up their game against a strong County Arts team. Although Edna, Brenda, Roger O and Neil C had an excellent 6 shot win the other 2 rinks couldn’t match them and Cromer were defeated 49-65. Members continue to compete in the early rounds of the Club competitions with several shock results and some very close score lines.

Half way through the season new faces are always welcome at the club. With the green open until the end of September there is still lots of time to come along at 10am any morning or 7pm on a Friday evening (bar open!) for a roll up and see what fun you can have. Membership fees
