PLANNING APPLICATION FOR £4.15MILLION CANCER CENTRE AT CROMER HOSPITAL GOES IN Continued from front cover...
Your legal matters in safe hands for generations
The plans, involving the refurbishment and extension of a disused ward, will now be considered by North Norfolk District Council. If permission is granted, building work is expected to take around a year.
The proposed centre will enable patients, many of whom currently travel to Norwich, to have their treatment and access support services closer to home.
Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of family, property and business legal matters with care and professionalism.
The centre, on the site of the former Davison Unit, will include: • Six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day. • Three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually. • A Macmillan cancer information and support centre. • The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management.
The majority of funding for the centre will come from Macmillan Cancer Support, which is providing up to £2.2 million and Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity, which is contributing £1.5million. The remaining £450,000 is coming out of NNUH Trust funds.
The number of people living with cancer is growing and predicted to rise from 2.5million today to four million by 2030. In Norfolk, around 6,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year. There are approximately 35,300 people living with cancer in the county.

Gwyneth Tyler, Macmillan Head of Services for South and East England, said “It is fantastic to see this crucial project, which will improve cancer care for so many people in North Norfolk, move another step forward with the submission of the planning application. If permission is granted, this centre will help to meet the growing need for people to get treatment and support closer to home. Of course, this type of project is only possible thanks to people’s generosity. At Macmillan, we are entirely reliant on public donations and that support is what enables us to be there for people living with cancer and the people who support them.”

The trust provides acute hospital care to a catchment area of almost 830,000 people from Norfolk and neighbouring counties. Sheringham and District Philatelic Society On 8 July the Society met for an ‘in house’ evening of displays.
Four members each volunteered to put together 40 sheets from their own collections and to show these to fellow members.
Jane Purkiss started things off with pages illustrating the travels of James Cook, the 18th century explorer. Stamps and First Day Covers showed his ships, navigation instruments, places he discovered or called into en route for provisions, and portraits of Cook. Many countries, connected to his origin and travels, have produced philatelic items in his honour.
Society secretary Jim Farrell came next, with a display of recent Irish issues, from 2012 to 2018. These included commemorative stamps of the sinking of the Titanic, of Bram Stoker, (the author of Dracula) and of the 1916 Irish Rebellion. We learned that definitive, self adhesive stamps are now produced on a roll and can be issued from a machine at any value from 1 cent up to 100 euros.

Tony Taylor started the second half of the evening with material from his specialist subject, the Moroccon agencies. He has moved on from stamps and now studies postal rates, post marks, postal stationary and overprints such as can be found on postal stationary from Gibraltar. He also showed postal stationary from Moroccan hotels, each with their own cachet.
The evening was completed with Gerry Smith’s collection of stamps, illustrating the evolution of various joint issues between the countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika (later to become Tanzania), Zambia and Zanzibar, as each became independent.

Smooth or fast, loud or soft, Mundesley on Show has it all!
Great music, great dancing, a gang show and a murder mystery – that’s what Mundesley on Show is bringing to the North Norfolk coast from 8 – 17 August. A fantastic, diverse line up of Norfolk performers and on the first three evenings a tasty light supper as well.
The entertainment commences with the lyrical music of Sheringham’s own Paul Thompson who will regale you with his humorous musical adventures with ‘Bluebell’ the Guinness World Record-Breaking Electric Milk Float. A smooth, relaxing chill-out evening follows with Norwich based Cordes Strings Quartet playing pop, jazz and classical music favourites. Both nights set cabaret style with a gorgeous light supper served.
Adventures by Post
The local Mundesley 1st Air Scouts gang show will warm the cockles of your heart with super family fun and laughter. Then Coronation Hall turns into a dance hall for the Trotters Bottom barn dance. We’ll get even the most reticent dancers stripping the willow. Next up is Ormesby’s divine Sarah Mai backed by The Rhythm Riots bringing you a 1940’s vibe where you can jive, lindy or Charleston. Included in this ticket price is also a short dance class at the start of the evening.
The grand finale will be the greatest pop punk concert the Norfolk coast has seen. With fast tempos, prominent electric guitars with distortion, and power chord changes set against pop-influenced melodies, our line-up of Couch, Foreign Bier and Adventures by Post will have you bopping and pogo’ing all night long.
Whether you prefer your music smooth or fast, loud or soft, Mundesley on Show offers 7 nights of marvellous entertainment with an Awards Night Murder Mystery from Dreamstone Productions to boot!

North Norfolk District Council achieves trio of Green Flag Awards for green spaces
Holt Country Park, Pretty Corner Woods and Sadler’s Woods recognised again as among best open spaces in the UK.
Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham, has re-joined Holt Country Park and Pretty Corner Woods in being recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world.
Holt Country Park holds its position as a green space for the 14th year running and was joined by Pretty Corner Woods in 2013. Sadler’s Wood first received the accolade in 2012 and despite just missing out last year it has now re-claimed its place thanks to the hard work of our Countryside Team.
The parks are among a record-breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces and 131 in thirteen other countries around the world that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.
Cllr. Virginia Gay, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Culture and Wellbeing, said “We’re truly delighted to be receiving a Green Flag award for the 14th year in a row. It’s especially pleasing to hear the news about a Green Flag for Sadler’s Wood. Our woodlands and green spaces mean so much to everyone and these awards celebrate the dedication that goes into maintaining them to such a high standard.”
International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners.” “Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.”
The international award, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

On Tuesday 2 July, after a splendid lunch, John Balls, who organises the Norfolk Titanic Association, gave a fascinating talk called “Titanic – Imposters and Assumed Names”.
John has discovered that over 30 people travelled on the Titanic under assumed names. His research has been a study of human motives and desperation.
John’s interest was sparked by a newspaper article about a 92-year-old survivor who had died in 2005. She claimed to have been the youngest survivor, having been conceived on board, and she fought unsuccessfully
“It was a real pleasure to talk about headship with my predecessor Mr King and meet pupils from those who left a few weeks ago to some of the class of 1949!”
to have her mother’s lover recognised as her father and shown on her birth certificate.
John divided the imposters into four groups - ‘professionals’, ‘lovers’, ‘those wishing to escape’ and ‘mysteries’. The ‘professionals’ were gamblers who worked in threes, targeting wealthy passengers. The ‘lovers’ were eloping couples, such as the pair who pretended to be brother and sister. ‘Those wishing to escape’ included a man accused by a pregnant woman of being the father of her baby. The largest group of imposters were the ‘mysteries’, many of whom were crew members.
The most interesting case John cited was that of Thomas Hart, whose documentation was stolen in a Southampton pub when he was drunk. The thief boarded the Titanic in his place and Thomas, embarrassed, disappeared until after the disaster, arriving at the house of his mother, who had thought him dead!
On behalf of the 32 members and 2 guests present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked John for his extremely stimulating talk.
If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our monthly meetings, you will be warmly welcomed.
Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.
We shall next meet at the Links Hotel in West Runton on Tuesday 6 August when Andy Cooper will give a talk entitled ‘Drones – The Future or a Menace?’ With the Gatwick drone incident last Christmas, there is a lot of interest and some confusion about drones. This talk will attempt to clarify the situation and look at the commercial uses of drones.

If you have received a diagnosis of Dementia, it's important to put together a plan for your future wishes and care Our living with dementia Q&As highlight how a solicitor can help make sure plans for the future are put in place and are legally valid.
Q1. How can a solicitor help someone living with dementia plan for their future? A solicitor can help someone living with dementia plan for their future by taking their instructions for Wills, Trusts and Lasting Powers of Attorney. It is a common misconception that someone diagnosed with dementia lacks the capacity to make legal documents. Solicitors can assess the person's capacity when taking instructions for legal documents and involve GPs where necessary. If someone living with dementia does not have capacity then the Court of Protection can appoint a Deputy to manage their affairs and the Deputy can make an application for a Statutory Will on their behalf. Q2. What are Lasting Powers of Attorney and what do they cover? Lasting Powers of Attorney are documents which appoint people (attorneys) to deal with your finances and welfare in the event that you lose capacity. You are able to provide instructions to your attorneys in the documents or your preferences in regards to specific matters. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Property & Financial Affairs allows your attorneys to make decisions which are in your best interests in
relation to your property, bank accounts and investments. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Health & Welfare allows your attorneys to make decisions in relation to your personal welfare including your care needs.
Q3. What is a deputy and how can you become one? A Deputy is a person who is appointed by the Court of Protection to make decisions on behalf of a person who has lost capacity and cannot make or amend their Lasting Powers of Attorney. It is more common for a Deputy to be appoint to manage the person's Property & Financial Affairs as the Court accepts that in most cases healthcare professionals are best placed to make decisions regarding a personal's welfare. The application to become a Deputy is a paper application to the Court and requires specific forms to be completed. Family members/friends can be appointed as Deputies as can professionals. The Office of the Public Guardian also have a panel of professional Deputies they can appoint in complex or contested cases.
Q4. What is an advance statement and how can it help someone living with dementia? An advance statement, otherwise known as a Living Will, is a legal document which outlines your decisions to refuse a specific type of treatment at some time in the future and is used when you no longer have the capacity to make the decisions for yourself. It is a way in which to let your loved ones know your preferences regarding treatment. Living Wills are not usually as comprehensive as a Lasting Power of Attorney
for Health & Welfare and so it is recommended that you seek legal advice in the first instance.
Q5. What advice would you give to someone living with dementia when it comes to planning for the future? A diagnosis of dementia does not mean that you are unable to make legal documents, however it is best to make legal documents sooner rather than later so that your wishes can be carried out in the event that you do lose capacity. Just because you are living with dementia it does not necessarily mean you are unable to make a Will. However, time is of the essence and it is important to ensure you seek legal advice as early as possible, while you are still in a position to pass the legal test for testamentary capacity. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are delighted to announce that we are now offering legal appointments in Cromer, having secured a private meeting room at Merchants Place in Cromer on the last Friday of every month.
As our North Norfolk client base grows, being able to meet with existing and prospective clients in Cromer enables us to bridge the geographic gap between our North Walsham and Sheringham offices, ensures we are fully accessible to our Cromer based clients and is a further commitment to our growing presence in the area. Marine and Wildlife Rescue. Sir David the grey seal release. managed to cut the netting off and release instantly.
Going On Wednesday 3rd July, Sir David, an atlantic grey seal, was released back into the North Sea having spent exactly 3 months at East Winch Wildlife Centre. He had been at the RSPCA facility undergoing treatment for an embedded frisbee cutting deep into his neck.
Our charity has been actively involved in the rescue of seals around the Norfolk coast for many years. In August 2013, we even captured an entangled grey seal on Scroby sand bank off Great Yarmouth. That mission was with help from the Caister Lifeboat Crew and we
Strand Club
The Strand Club were delighted to welcome Simon from Norfolk Wild Encounters on 10 July, and as he began to speak, the contents of the noisy boxes he had brought in were soon revealed.
There was Woody, a barn owl weighing just 11 ounces, closely followed by Harley, a dark breasted barn owl, weighing 9 and three quarter ounces. Woody was very vocal and flew from end to end of the room, yelling as she went and perching on her box and Simon's hand with equal composure. Jean B, our visitor , then donned the special gauntlet and had the great honour of being the landing pad for Woody!
Going
Unfortunately, calls received for entangled seals have rocketed in recent years .We attend, on average, at least one a month, often collaborating with volunteers from Friends of Horsey Seals and British Divers Marine Life Rescue.
Sir David was 126 KG when he was captured. After netting him, we managed to get him into a large stretcher and he was transferred to the RSPCA seal hospital. The video of the moment Then came a tawny owl who was 7 years old to be followed by a baby snowy owl. He was only 7 weeks old and when placed on the floor toddled with great determination, though slightly wobbly, under the committee's table where he stayed, whittering, while three more grown up birds were presented to us. We admired a gorgeous Great Grey Owl who was about 8 years old, a European Eagle owl who was 3 and finally a Woodford Owl from Africa who was 9. The Great Grey owl was from Scandinavia and was the only one who preferred cold weather. Simon only flew him outside in the winter.
We learnt that some of the owls were diurnal instead of nocturnal as owls are usually thought to be. They had distinctive yellow eyes. Simon was careful to put each bird back in its box before releasing the next one as the A kookaburra came next - from the larger ones could view the same family as our kingfisher he smaller ones as dinner. We then met Bullet, an Indian Eagle owl who weighed 2 lb 9oz and was only 14 weeks old. He was huge and beautiful and looked at us all with total disinterest as Simon brought him round the room to be petted and cooed at.
he was captured can be viewed on our facebook page. Had it not been for our strategic planning and the vigilance of the persons who spotted him on a visit to the colony at Horsey, we may have lost the opportunity to capture him.

All this time the snowy owl baby was sitting behind our table looking anxious, and when Simon began putting the other birds back into the van his cries began to sound rather desperate ...."don't leave me, Dad!" When Simon picked him up his cries

changed completely into a calm chittering and there was a chorus of "aaaah!" from us.
It was an excellent afternoon - a little out of the ordinary, educational and certainly entertaining. Simon has a quiet, gentle manner and his birds obviously felt safe and cared for in his company.
The Strand Club are pleased to announce that we will once again be holding a coffee morning in aid of a local cause. This year we will hold it at the Pavilion from 10am until 12noon on Wednesday 14 August. We have decided to support Cromer Community and Hospital Friends in their efforts to raise money to equip and furnish a new Cancer Care and Support centre in Cromer. This will be developed on the site of the old Davison Unit and is estimated to cost £4.15 million. This is such a vital resource for our area as the trip to the N & N is tough at the best of times and so, in the worst of times it is nigh on impossible. We will put our backs behind our coffee morning and ask anyone who can to support us in any way they can. We will need stall holders on the day and items to sell. Cakes, books (in good condition), raffle prizes, homemade jams and pickles, plants and produce from your garden will all be accepted with delight and relief! Please come along on the day to support us too and to spend your hard earned money for a cause that will benefit all too many of us. For further details about where to take your offerings and for more information, please contact Josie Dennis on 01263 579748 or Jean Fermor on 01263 578248. Thank you so much. Our next meeting will be on 11 September in the Pavilion as usual. There will be a talk on the History of Nursery Rhymes which should be fascinating. Come along at 2pm, pay your £3 entrance and join us. Visitors are always more than welcome.
If you would like to know more about the club please contact Jackie Hudson, our Chairman, on 01263 720866, or Chris Wood, our Secretary, on 01263 579433. Photos: Jackie Hudson

In the last two weeks yet more hoglets have been admitted.
These little ones normally would be snuggled in the nest with mother and siblings keeping each other warm – a lone one soon loses body heat so they need constant contact heat.
I am often asked about fleas. A healthy hog has fleas. If one is admitted with none alarm bells ring that there is a health issue even if nothing is visible. I spray the spines with a cat flea product avoiding the face. Fleas soon fall off and die and until they go back into the wild will not have anymore. Hedgehog fleas cannot usually survive on dogs or cats.

Cromer WI
July is our birthday month. This year the WI in Cromer is 82 years old and 48 members and 4 visitors celebrated with entertainer Eddie Bushell who sang songs from shows as well as classic songs we could sing a long too. Our committee provided a buffet which we enjoyed before we had the business part of our meeting.
On Norfolk Day from 2pm we will be handing out 100 slices of cake to passers-by from a member’s beach hut on East Beach. This is to celebrate Norfolk Federation’s Centenary year. Then the “C” word was mentioned - yes, it is time to start planning our tree, nativity and wreath for the Christmas Tree Festival in the parish church at the end of November.
Our competition theme was Seaside. 1st place was Liz Holhouse with 3 large decorated shells. Rosie Evans was 2nd with a beach scene which included a bucket and spade, a stick of rock and other beach related items and 3rd place was Moira Harding with a hand painted scene of a family crabbing from Cromer Pier.
We now have a break for summer with our next meeting at the Community Centre on Garden Street on 12 September at 2pm when our speaker will be Paul Strutt telling us about the work of NARS-Norfolk Accident Rescue Service. Visitors are always welcome.

Club Evenings at CLT&SC
In response to demand, particularly from those working during the day, Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club has launched Club Evenings every Wednesday until the end of September starting at 6pm. Non-members are especially welcome!
Club Evenings for tennis will be played on grass where possible - on some of the best grass courts in the UK (LTA recent report). Non-members pay just £10 for the entire evening with the chance of playing five different sports – tennis, badminton (also on grass), table tennis, racketball and squash. Rackets, bats, balls and shuttlecocks are available from the bar. For tennis there is a round robin format so over the evening tennis players will get a minimum of four sets of tennis (half hour each) with different players. Everyone will meet lots of different people over the evening.
For badminton, there will be 15 minute double sessions on the grass badminton court and then changeover to allow maximum participation. A badminton book in the bar will give you tips and rules!
Even when it rains there is table tennis available – games on two tables and round the table ping-pong for larger groups, which is enormous fun. Squash and racketball will also usually be available.
There is a welcoming bar run by the Club’s famous barmen Jordy, Peter, Kim and Johnny. The Club is situated on the Norwich Road just next door to Cromer Academy and there is ample car parking. Club Chairman Kelvin van Hasselt said “The Club is determined to make

Beat Heartbreak with a Wonderful Walk on Norfolk Day
Walk Cromer are celebrating Norfolk Day on 27 July with a beautiful circular walk from Cromer via Felbrigg Hall, one of Norfolk's impressive stately homes. The full route is 6 miles, but we have also plotted a series of shorter routes for those who prefer a more leisurely walk of about 3 miles.
This is one of Walk Cromer's bi-monthly weekend walk events which raise funds for The British Heart Foundation, a charity which supports research into heart disease, strokes and vascular dementia.
A specially designed map and information sheet has been produced and will be available to pick up for free at both Merchants Place and Cromer Information Centre on Saturday 27 July.
LIFE LIGHT - the new name for Beach Mission! Sunday 25th to Friday 30th August
Date
Cromer’s Club welcoming and accessible to ALL the people of Cromer, to encourage participation in racket sports and to welcome non-members to the Club as a place to relax after a day’s work. The Club hope many will come and enjoy Club Evenings at the Club and play five different racket sports over the evening and have the opportunity of meeting new people and making friends while playing, watching or enjoying a drink at the bar afterwards ! The Club urges Cromer’s hotels and bed and breakfasts to alert their guests to Club Evenings at the Club every Wednesday – what other seaside town offers world famous grass tennis courts and five different racket sports for just £ 10 for an evening of play?”

Choose your own time and pace for this self-led walk which starts from the Information Centre on Louden Road and begins with a steady climb out of the town along Weavers Way where you can stand and look back at the wonderful scenery before crossing a bridge over the railway line. Felbrigg Hall is noted for its Jacobean architecture and fine Georgian interior, standing in approximately 7sqkm of parkland from which there is access to a number of other way-marked walks and the National Cycle network.
The full walk goes through the park, up "the lion’s mouth" and loops round back to Cromer via the wooded hills of East Runton.
Why not wear black, white and yellow, to echo the colours of the Norfolk flag, and send us your photos. There will be a £10 prize for the best picture – send to enquiries@walkcromer.co.uk

The result may not have been too important but for the record Cromer won on 5 of the seven rinks and by a 147-87 shot score. The 2 top rinks were Keith M, Brenda S, Roger O and Keith P (31-9) and Arthur C, Tony G, Chrissie L and Neil P (30-8).
