Cromer and District Garden Society
Five years ago the Norfolk Rivers Trust was set up to help protect the nine chalk streams that flow into the sea in North Norfolk.
One of these is the River Mun and the work of the trust in improving this river and purifying the water that flows along it was the subject of the Garden Society’s first talk of 2020.
The speaker was Eddie Anderson through whose land the river flows and it is a story of success. A duck pond over two acres in size was constructed by the owners of the Templewood estate in the early 20th century but because it was relatively shallow it quickly became covered in algae each year. Too much algae affects oxygen levels and this led to a fall in the number of fish and frogs in the pond. This became more of a problem when a water treatment works was built in Northrepps after the second world war. Water discharged from the works only made the situation worse and this is the problem Eddie Anderson set out to tackle.

rivers as up to 90% of pollutants are removed. New plant species are growing and a greater variety of birds, amphibians, dragonflies and mammals can now be seen. It is an experiment which has national significance so it seems that a small and fairly unimportant river in north east Norfolk is proving something of a trailblazer in improving the environment.
Continued from front cover... The river trust tested the water and decided that a series of lagoons between the works and the pond would be a possible solution to the problem. Three lagoons were built to help control water levels and over 20,000 plants were planted in and around the lagoons. The water flowing through the lagoons was purified as the plants fix the phosphates and nitrates in the soil.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 12 February at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Howard Lupton’s topic is ‘The World of Primroses’ so do come along if you can. Visitors are very welcome. Cost £2.

THE STRAND CLUB
On 15 January we once again met at the Amber restaurant at Cromer Country Club for our annual festive lunch. The welcome was as strong as in previous years and the room was laid out beautifully for us with crackers and a large table ready to be laden with raffle prizes. There were 17 very happy winners once we had demolished our lunch.
Everyone enjoyed the afternoon of sociability and looked forward to our next meeting on 12th February when we will hear a talk about preventing scams. This is a very current and concerning subject and will be given by an expert from the NatWest bank. All are welcome to join us. We charge just a small fee of £3 to visitors at the door which covers light refreshments.
Do please come along and see if you like us! We meet on the second Wednesday of each month (except August) in the Sports Pavilion in Overstrand at 2pm.
Further information can be obtained from our Chairman, Jackie Hudson, on 01263 720866 or Chris, our Secretary, on 01263 579433.
Overstrand Evening WI
We began our year and our first meeting of the new decade with an informal session. We chewed over various suggestions for our 2021 activities whilst enjoying a fish and chip supper.
We hope , in terms of current membership numbers, that small is beautiful, but new prospective members would be most welcome to try us out.
Our 2020 programme is in our noticeboard in the centre of the village roughly opposite the bus stop. We are a diverse, lively and unstuffy group, open to suggestions on how to improve. Try something new for 2020!
We meet in the Village Hall , The Londs, Overstrand on the third Wednesday in the month. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 19 February.
Cromer WI
The President welcomed 37 members at the January meeting, wishing everyone a Happy New Year.
Our speaker Amber Osborn, a Nat West Community Banker, in her talk entitled ‘Friends against Scams’, described some of the techniques criminals use to rob us of our money via the telephone and internet. She gave members some tips on how to stay safe.
Certificates and the Winners Shield from the Christmas Tree Festival were displayed, then given to Yvonne Mileham and Monica Gepp at the end of the meeting.

Cromer ‘Treasure Hunts’ to Raise Funds for Mental Health
A group of shops in Cromer have teamed up to raise money to promote mental wellbeing in the town, whilst also providing residents and visitors with an opportunity to test their observation skills and have some fun. The treasure hunts will run at various times through the year with a suggested donation of £1 for entry. Entrants will need to visit all the participating shops to find objects or characters linked to a theme. The first hunt will run from 7 - 27 February and will involve finding Dr Dolittle’s animal friends. A second hunt will be launched in March to coincide with Cromer’s 1960s weekend.
The idea is the brainchild of Jen Kiernan who runs Beatniks clothing and deli on Mount Street and has 15 years’ experience of running mental wellbeing programmes. Jen says “since we opened last year, we have lost count of the number of local people who say there is not enough done for mental health here so we decided to do something about that.” The funds raised by the treasure hunts will be used to put on mental health promotion and support events throughout the year, many linked to national wellbeing initiatives. The scheme will be launched on ‘Time to Talk Day’ on 6 February, when Beatniks will be offering free hot drinks and cake to anyone who wants to drop in to talk about mental health. Treasure hunt entry forms will be available form Beatniks from 6 to 27 February.
Chamber of Trade & Business
The Cromer Chamber of Trade & Business has started 2020 on something of a high. Membership is up around 50% on last year as more local businesses have come on board to help promote the town’s commercial and business interests.
Date for your Diary
And Cromer is in good business shape too. There has been a lot in the national press recently about The year’s Crane Fruehauf reunion will be the so-called death of the high street; around the country, towns like Cromer are seeing an average on 3 April at Rossi’s Sports Centre in North of over 10% of their shops boarded as a result of difficult economic times and the competition from Walsham. More details to follow Internet shopping. But Cromer has been bucking that trend and remains a healthy and vibrant location for a wide variety of businesses. Indeed, over the last year, a number of new businesses have opened up on our high street. Chamber Chairman, Sam Grout, explains, “Cromer’s economy relies heavily on visitors and tourism, so it’s vital that, when those visitors come, they see an exciting range of shops and services on offer.”
For the year ahead, the Chamber is planning to develop its social media communication with members and external audiences. Grout explains, “The Chamber is all about the collective efforts of its members, so we are always looking to improve how we communicate and share information.”
The Chamber will be holding its AGM in March and is always keen to welcome new members, especially anyone keen to get involved and help out with its work and activities. If you’d like more information, go to http://cromerchamber.org.uk/.

Million pound training fund helps local lifesaver a charitable foundation learn vital skills Foundation, that helps to protect life and property A recently recruited volunteer crew member at RNLI Cromer lifeboat station has had a vital part of their crew training funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation. Stuart Clarke from Aldborough near Cromer, recently travelled to the RNLI College in Poole, Dorset, to complete the charity’s Crew Emergency Procedures course. Stuart was inspired to join up as a volunteer crew member for the charity as he is one of the few local fishermen.
The course sees volunteer crew being trained in a variety of crucial subjects such as how to deal with fires aboard lifeboats, how to ‘abandon ship’ in the event of an emergency (with a 4m jump into water), team survival swimming, coping in a life-raft in simulated darkness, how to right a capsized inshore lifeboat, and the importance of lifejackets. It also includes sessions on the correct use of flares, fire extinguishers and throw bags. Talking about the training, Stuart, who volunteers as a boat crew member, said: I am aware of the dangers of the sea through my profession as a fisherman. To have this training will allow to me to put into practice all I have learnt both as a member of crew and at work’. Stuart’s training took place in the Sea Survival Centre at the RNLI College, where he was joined by other RNLI volunteer crew members from around the UK and Ireland. The training was funded by Lloyd’s Register
by supporting engineering-related education, public engagement and the application of research. The Foundation has committed to funding the RNLI’s Crew Emergency Procedures course for a second 5year period until December 2020. This additional funding of £1.06M brings their total support for RNLI crew training to just over £2.46M since 2008. More than 3,000 RNLI volunteer crew members have now received the training thanks to Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s funding.
Alex Evans, Lifesaving Training Manager at the RNLI said ‘We are so grateful to Lloyd’s Register Foundation for funding this vital part of our volunteer crews’ training. ‘Their support is very important to us and it’s fantastic how, so far, over 3,000 of our crew members have benefitted from Lloyd’s Register Foundation funding this part of their training. As only one in ten of our volunteer crew members comes from a professional maritime background, the Crew Emergency Procedures course is crucial in giving our volunteers the training they need and helping keep them as safe as possible while carrying out rescues. It gives volunteers the confidence to save lives even in the most challenging conditions.’
This donation is the latest in Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s relationship with the RNLI, which was recognised in 2010 when it received the Group Supporter Award from HRH Prince Michael of Kent in recognition of its valuable support of the charity.

‘New Decade, New Friends, New Start!’
Residents in North Norfolk and Broadland who would like to see in the new decade by making new friends and breathing new life into their communities are being encouraged to get involved in exciting new initiatives from Community Action Norfolk (CAN) and the North Norfolk Volunteer Hub at Merchants’ Place, Cromer. ‘We know that Christmas is a time when people often think about those who are lonely and isolated’, says Rachel Sidell, manager of Merchants’ Place, ‘and while people always respond magnificently, it’s important to remember that loneliness does not end on Boxing Day! January and February can be very hard months to get through if you are on your own or unable to get out, so we want to promote and provide opportunities for people to get together and support each other in ways that they will enjoy and will benefit both themselves and others’. The Cromer Good Neighbour Scheme, recently launched by CAN, is one of the new local initiatives designed to bring people together to get to know and help others in their community. Cromer’s scheme is one of several that CAN oversee across North Norfolk and As the dust settles on a busy Christmas Broadland which would welcome & New Year many people are now new people who would like to get turning their thoughts to special involved. CAN also run occasions in the year ahead.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Already this year we have had lots of requests for help with neutering cats and kitten under our £5 Neutering Campaign. We are only too happy to help in this way as there will be less unwanted kittens later this year. We do believe it has had an impact on the number of kittens needing our help and long may this continue.
Many people are not aware that a female cat can become pregnant from 4 months old, so it is important to neuter as soon as possible from this age. Of course, at that age, a kitten is not fully grown and if she does have kittens it will mean that, instead of enjoying life as the kitten she still is, she will be responsible for nourishing and caring for her own family instead
We are always dealing with requests for help with neutering feral cats and will be only too happy to lend one of our traps to catch them and pay for the cost of neutering at one of the vets we use. A new directive from our Head Office advises to also ensure that these cats are treated for fleas and worms and receive a single dose of vaccine for cat flu and feline parvovirus while at the vets. This will be paid for from branch funds..
At present, apart from older cats, Darcy, Phoebe and Bilbo in residence, we also have several young cats all under 1 year old. None of these have had the benefit of living in a home so are looking for new homes with experienced cat people who will give them plenty of time to adapt to their new surroundings. Milton, for instance, arrived with his mother and her younger kittens, having been living in someone’s garden. Mum and her young family have all been re-homed and, although still not happy with too much contact, he loves to play and will accept a fuss, but not if he is on his activity centre. Pearl, Benji, Brexit, Lennie, Izzy and Maddie have also learned to accept the love and care of their carers, and once settled, will give lots of pleasure to their new families. They do all need
homes with no young children and although some may prefer living with a companion cat, they would probably be better in homes without dogs.
Finally, apologies to Dick, Ray’s brother, for not mentioning, in our previous edition, that he helped lay the floor of the cats’ pens!
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

SCOUTS FOCUS THEIR RADAR ON ACHIEVING EVEN MORE TOP AWARDS IN 2020! potatoes and other lunchtime snacks – all made individually by a really friendly team of volunteers.
Thanks to the tremendous support and thoughtfulness of Manager Lynn Kerslake and the amazing enthusiasm and encouragement of so many of her Neatishead volunteers, more than 60 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from across North East Norfolk experienced a specially arranged visit with talks, and guides through each of the activity rooms at the Royal Air Force Air Defence Radar Museum (ADRM) on the site of the former Royal Air Force radar and control base RAF Neatishead, close to the village of Horning in the heart of the Norfolk Broads.
Sally Weekes, who had organised the Top Awards Celebration for the District Scouts, says that the Neatishead team (many were people who had worked at the RAF base when it was an operational centre of the nation's air defence and about the most secret place in Britain) were so helpful in settingup the event and extremely knowledgeable ensuring that two groups of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts each had a fascinating insight into the role Neatishead radar played in WWII and the Cold War, viewed the Bristol Bloodhound missile outside and were allowed to sit down and experience hands-on real equipment that once showed what the enemy was up, Cotishall Search and Rescue and dressing-up, as well as (possibly the biggest thrill of all!) sitting in the cockpit of a Jaguar ground-attack craft, and seeing the recently acquired cockpits from Lightning fighter aircraft. Our hosts also arranged for parents to have their own minitours and we were all able to enjoy the kind hospitality of the amazing catering team throughout the day who provided copious hot & cold drinks, sandwiches, soup, jacket
Sally explained that this very special event was arranged to celebrate our young people who had achieved their Chief Scout Awards - the top award achievable in each Scouting Section. Sections from Aylsham, Buxton Lamas, Cromer, Hoveton & Wroxham, Mundesley, Rural (Roughton Mill), Salhouse, Sheringham and West Runton attended with 31 Beavers, the first and youngest section of the Scout Group generally aged between 6 and 8 years old, gaining their Bronze Awards; 27 Cub Scouts, the second section of the Scout Group following on from Beavers, young people generally aged between 8 and 10 years old, gaining their Silver Awards; and 22 Scouts, generally aged between 10 ½ to 14 years old, gaining their Gold Awards. They were also joined and supported by Explorers, 14 to 18 years old and several Scout Network members, 18 to 25 years old. We were also very pleased that our North Walsham Young Leader, Jack Cowell, made it back to Norfolk from Agricultural College to be presented with his very special Young Leader Belt for completing all of his Young Leader training.
When they were presented with their Awards by our host, ADRM Manager Lynn Kerslake, the young people cited several favourite activities which they particularly enjoyed whilst gaining their badges to achieve their Top Awards, and these included: Abseiling, Archery, Shooting, Outdoor Activities,
WINDOW & DOOR REPAIRS UPVC, Aluminium & Timber
If anyone is interested in joining Scouting, whether a young person or adult in a nearby local Group, please contact District Commissioner Paul Henriksen at dc@northeastnorfolkscout.co.uk or 07766 762972 The museum is now closed for the winter but re-opens on the 31st March 2020.

Clapham & Collinge Launch New Year Charity Lasting Power of Attorney Scheme
Make it your New Year's Resolution to get your legal affairs in order and plan for the future. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorneys throughout January 2020. We will also make a £40 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support 4 Norfolk based charities. Our chosen charities are Age UK Norwich, Keeping Abreast, North Norfolk Community Transport and Cruse Bereavement Care Norwich.
Although it is often difficult to think about, it is crucial that we plan for the future and ensure we can manage our financial affairs in the event of an incapacitating illness, accident or injury. Everyone understands the importance of a Will, but Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) are a bit more obscure in the public sphere and often people are not aware why they need them. Government research has made it clear that there are dangerous misconceptions about managing your affairs when you lose mental capacity….
• 73% of people think if a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. This is untrue. An LPA will however give you consent to access joint funds to pay and monitor financial aspects of a joint account.
• 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at
hospital, if you can't make them yourself. This is untrue. Medical decisions need the specific, agreed consent of the person involved, before a next of kin can make treatment or welfare choices on someone else's behalf.
(Powerofattorney.campaign.gov.uk, 2019) With this scheme we hope to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and highlight the importance of getting your legal documents in place for peace of mind.
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint one or more people (known as 'attorneys') to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf.
This gives you more control over what happens to you if you have an accident or an illness and can't make decisions for yourself (where you 'lack mental capacity') or when you simply want to delegate the role to someone you trust.
There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney: • Property & Financial Affairs • Health & Welfare
When can they be used? Property and Finances – as soon as it has been registered • At the point you no longer have sufficient capacity to make certain decisions yourself or; • While you are still able to make decisions but are physically unable to carry them out or you want
someone else to make decisions for you Health and Welfare – can only be used if you cannot make the decision yourself (unconscious or lacking capacity).
Who can be an Attorney? • A family member • A trusted friend • A professional
What happens if I don't make a Lasting Power of Attorney? • No one has legal authority to act on your behalf – your spouse and children have no automatic rights to make decisions on your behalf • Someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order • This can be costly, time consuming and you may not end up being assisted by the person you would have chosen yourself
The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney will depend on whether you wish to have a Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney and/or a Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney prepared and registered.
To claim your discount and book your January appointment, please contact our Client Relations Team on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk Appointments must be booked by Friday 31st January and must take place by Friday 28th February 2020.

Cromer Times Issue 582 31st January 2020
Friends of Cromer Museum
John Morgan was the speaker at our January meeting and his topic was the early history of what is now North Lodge Park in Cromer.
In 1505 the will of Sir Bartholomew Reade (sometimes spelt Rede/Reed/Read) left money for a school to be built in Cromer using money from revenues of land in London linked to the Goldsmiths Company.
By 1791 the school was on a site in what is now Louden Road but in 1822 a new school was opened on land to the east of the town centre. It was to cater for 80 to 100 boys. Many of the subjects taught were related to the sea, an indication of the importance of fishing and seafaring to the town.
The land adjacent to the school was being farmed but interest in its potential as land suitable for building increased. In 1825 plans to build two rows of 17 three storied houses to be called Goldsmiths Square were put forward but little interest was shown and the plans were scrapped. In 1837 North Lodge was built. Originally known as Goldsmith House it was extended in 1886. Plans for more houses on the site saw a house, coach house and stables built and in 1873 a school house was built for the headmaster.
An old drawing of the school opened in 1822 with Cromer Church in the background
The boundary wall that exists today separating the school from the rest of the site dates from 1860. The Goldsmiths Company was loathe to allow the school to come under local control when education became a state responsibility in the years after 1870 and decided to close the school in 1895. In the following year a School Board was established for Cromer.
Richard Hoare bought the whole site of what is now North Lodge Park in 1895 for £3000. In 1928 when plans were put forward to sell building plots in North Lodge Park the Urban District Council stepped in and bought the site to prevent it being chopped up into smaller pieces. John Morgan continues to research the history of North Lodge Park with the support of the Friends group that was set up five years ago and further publications on its history are planned.
The next meeting of the Friends of Cromer Museum is on Friday 21 February at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Paul Damen will be showing some of the many images he has of Cromer including some 3-D images. Glasses suitable for viewing them will be available. Members £3, visitors £4. The meeting will follow our AGM which starts at 7pm.

Whether you have started the year doing Veganuary, or are just trying to have the odd meat free day, this recipe is one you definitely need to have in your repertoire. Even the determined meat eaters want a slice of this loaf once they smell it, as the flavour is so rich and full, and the textures are just gorgeous. This has been a few years in the making, having gone through various changes and adaptations, and is what we served on Christmas Day this year; needless to say, there was none left!
Cranberries and roast chestnuts can be purchased in most supermarkets, and although this isn’t the cheapest nut loaf recipe, it is so worth the extra pennies! Miso paste can be bought from all good health food stores, and keeps a long time in the fridge. You can add it to home made soups, as it adds a fabulous umami flavour, and having live cultures in it, is very good for your gut, so an all-round great purchase. Even if you’ve never been tempted by vegetarian food before, give this a go – I promise you will be converted!
Ultimate Vegetarian Roast Loaf
1 large red onion, diced 1 large carrot, peeled and cut into very small chunks Olive oil 2 fat cloves garlic, diced small 150g red lentils, rinsed well under cold water 900ml hot veg stock (I use Marigold Bouillon powder) Good tsp dried sage 1 pack roasted chestnuts, chopped up 100g dried cranberries Tsp Miso paste, mixed with a little hot water 100g oatmeal
Run a little olive oil around a 2lb loaf tin to prevent sticking, and preheat your oven to 180°. Place onion, carrot and garlic in a couple tblsp olive oil in a deep frying pan or wok, and cook gently until getting soft giving the occasional stir, around 10 mins. Add in the lentils and stir well to coat in the oil, and then add in your stock and bring to boil.
Simmer for 10 mins, and then add in sage, chestnuts, cranberries and stir in the miso. Continue simmering for a further 10 to 15 mins until most of the water is absorbed and the lentils are soft. Take off the heat and stir in the oats, combining well. Pour mixture into the loaf tin and firm down a

little with the back of a large spoon and bake in the oven for 35 – 40 mins, until slightly brown on the top. Run a spatula around the edges to loosen. Leave in tin to cool slightly, and turn out smartly onto a chopping board, knocking the bottom to loosen the loaf. Leave to stand for a further 15 mins to enable easy cutting (I cover with foil and a clean tea towel.) Can be portioned once cold (put in fridge to properly chill before cutting) and frozen in portions for easy roast dinners. Reheat in the foil at the bottom of the oven. Carolyn Burn

CROMER HONOURS The Cromer Town Council Award Scheme to recognise significant achievement by an individual, or group, enters its 22nd year. So far well over 100 people or groups have received the awards, which are presented by the Mayor of Cromer at the Annual Town Meeting. Every year one hears of work or a deed being done within our community which enhances the quality of life in our town or of its inhabitants. Much of this work by its very nature, goes largely unrecognized and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large. Who is eligible for an Award? Any person, young or old, and group or organisation, is eligible to be considered. The Council is looking towards anyone who has made a significant contribution to the quality of an individual, or wider community life in Cromer, during the last year. If you know someone, a group or organisation, who you feel should be considered for an honour, please contact the Town Council office for a nomination form which must be completed and returned to the Town Clerk. Copies of the nomination form will also be available from the Town Council website www.cromer-tc.gov.uk Information on any meetings or matters arising can be obtained from the Town Clerk on 01263 512254.

Monday 14 January saw the Society’s first meeting of the New Year. Sixteen members and one visitor from the King’s Lynn Philatelic Society came together for an informal sales evening. There was a good variety of items for sale, including albums of First Day Covers, packets of used stamps, both GB, commonwealth and foreign, a selection of mint material and postal history items. It was an opportunity to ‘talk stamps’ and to catch up with each other as well as to buy and sell. The next meeting will be on Monday 10 February at, 7.30pm at West Runton Church Hall for the AGM and a silent auction. This would be a good opportunity to come to meet members and to consider joining. Contact Gerry 01263 579529 or Jim 01263 721043 for more details.
