YES

Yes, they know they should not have been in the car that night. Yes, they know the extent of the damage done. Yes, they have said their sorries, and tried to put things right. Yes, they will have to live with the consequences, whatever they are. Yes, they will deal with what comes their way. BUT – WERE YOU THERE? Were you there when the phone said come quick? Were you there when we were stopped, and not allowed to go through? Were you there when the emergency crews all pulled away, leaving her there, because of the smell of petrol? Were you there when she was still stuck in the car? Were you there, knowing that the screams were her screams of fear? Were you there when he collapsed out cold on the road? Were you there to hear his mother’s heart wrenching screams? Were you there to see the car stuck in the house with her still in it? Were you there to feel the relief when they had cut her out? Were you there in the Ambulance, watching the pain and fear play out? Were you at the A & E hearing her cries? Were you there to cope with the media frenzy, the dreaded Facebook, the judgements, the grapevine gossip & the lies? WERE YOU THERE? Are you here now? Are you here now with the nightmares? Are you here now with the sleepless nights? Are you here now, with the ongoing health worries, and ongoing mental trauma? IF YOU ARE HERE, God bless you and thank you

Sue Ryder to open new Cromer store

Sue Ryder was evicted from their Cromer shop, after 27 years, in August last year and have been actively searching for another premises, which they have now found.

The national healthcare charity will be opening their new store on Friday 23 February, having taken over the old Cromer Shopping Centre in Garden St. and creating a large, spacious store selling fashion, furniture, home & garden, gifts and more.

Two top orchestras are on their way to North Norfolk

Concert-goers can expect to enjoy fantastic evenings in wonderful church settings

Music lovers can look forward to a couple of treats, with two of the country’s leading chamber orchestras heading to North Norfolk this spring.

The London Mozart Players and the City of London Sinfonia will perform in two churches over the coming months, with works from the likes of JS Bach, Mendelssohn and Mozart on the programmes. St Peter’s, Sheringham, will be the venue for the London Mozart Players on Friday, 9 March at 7.30pm. The evening will include Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in D minor along with works by Mozart, Shostakovich and Moore. The violin soloist will be Savitri Grier. Tickets are £15, and children aged 16 and under can attend for free. To book, pop into the Sheringham Little Theatre booking office, visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com or call 01263 822347.

Alison, shop manager, welcomes any donations and adds "there are also volunteering opportunities for anyone with time to spare and interested in joining a new team and making friends. The volunteer roles available include till operator, stock sorter, PAT tester (training provided) and anyone with an interest in bric-a-brac, books, fashion etc."

The new Sue Ryder shop will be open 7 days per week and they hope to see old and new customers, from opening day on Friday 23rd onwards.

Sue Ryder provides hospice and neurological care for people facing a frightening, life-changing diagnosis. We do whatever we can to be a safety net for our patients and their loved ones at the most difficult time of their lives. We see the person, not the condition.

For more information on the charity, visit www.sueryder.org or to volunteer/donate in Cromer, contact Alison on 01263 511789

On Saturday, 21 April, the City of London Sinfonia will be playing at St Catherine’s, Ludham at 7.30pm. Bach’s Double Violin Concerto will be one of the highlights, alongside compositions by Tabakova, Purcell, Pärt and Mozart.

Tickets for this concert, which is being promoted by the Ludham Festival, are available from Ludham Butchers or by calling 01692 678060. They cost ÂŁ12 in advance (ÂŁ15 on the door) and, again, children aged 16 and under can attend for free.

Cllr Maggie Prior, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Culture, said “These concerts are sure to give music lovers in North Norfolk a treat, with two brilliant orchestras performing in two great settings. We are pleased to be supporting these events, including by helping to keep ticket prices down, and concert-goers can expect to enjoy some wonderful performances.

Orchestras Live North Norfolk is behind a series of high-quality concerts being supported by North Norfolk District Council in partnership with Orchestras Live and local community organisations, with funding from Arts Council England.

WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICIT ORS in 201 ? 201 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT APPOINTMENT,, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 201 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Stamp duty stamped out for first time buyers Nic Sheldrake, Director, Hayes + Storr

The Budget announced on the 22nd November 2017 brought an immediate change to the initial stamp duty threshold for first time buyers, meaning that anyone buying their first home won’t be liable for stamp duty if the purchase price is below £300,000. For more expensive areas such as London, additional relief is available for purchases up to £500,000.00.

It is predicted that the stamp duty changes will help up to 95% of first time buyers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and up to 80% in London who are purchasing properties beneath the £300,000 threshold.

First time buyers will need to declare that they have never owned a property, either in the UK or abroad. The declaration will be contained in a Stamp Duty Return form, which can be

prepared by a solicitor on your behalf. Hayes + Storr will do this at no extra cost. If a property is being purchased by more than one individual, then all parties have to be first time buyers to qualify for the relief.

We at Hayes + Storr welcome the new relief and will be offering a 10% discount throughout the whole of 2018 on our conveyancing legal fees for first time buyers. We are keen to help those wishing to get on the property ladder and will do what we can to make the process easier. We are always available for an initial no obligation chat, and your transaction will be dealt with by a qualified property lawyer specifically allocated to your property purchase.

Hayes + Storr Solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

Secret visitors give Cromer the ‘Thumbs Up’

A group of secret visitors came to Cromer in the run-up to Christmas and were impressed by the variety of shops and services, the friendliness of local business owners, and the look and feel of the town.

The Cromer Chamber organised the exercise as part of an effort to help its members understand how others see the town – how it appears to newcomers and visitors. There is nothing like a fresh pair of eyes to spot things that might not be obvious to residents and regulars.

The secret visitors came on a number of different days and recorded their impressions of the town giving detailed analysis of their experiences getting around, parking, shopping, eating, and using other services.

Impressions were generally very positive. The secret shoppers were impressed to see the range of independent shops and eateries that the

town offers, evidence that Cromer is ‘holding its own’ against nationwide brands. Some felt that the town had a strong traditional feel, and appeared ‘proud of its heritage’. One spoke of a ‘bustling town with a village feel’. And the human touch did not let us down either, all the visitors felt welcome and noted the friendly atmosphere in the town.

Other important features of the town earned high scores : the cleanliness and lack of litter, the sign-posting, car parks, and public toilets. But it wasn’t all perfect. The process has given us a few constructive ideas about things we can improve and do better. We will be discussing those with our members to ensure the town continues to offer its visitors a visit to remember.

The 13809 Preservation Society based hitherto at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley have worked hard over the years developing 53809 into a very reliable locomotive. John Moorhouse said “After completing a major overhaul our loco was able to attend the West Somerset Railway Gala celebrating the 50th anniversary of the S&DJR closure in 2016. The members of the Society realised that the time had arrived to accept help with the continued maintenance of 53809. Following two very enjoyable visits to the NNR for their Galas an offer of such help was discussed. This has been developed into, what we hope, will be a long term relationship. The NNR, using their now excellent facilities, will undertake ongoing maintenance assisted as and when possible by the experience gained by the 13809 Preservation Society members during the last 43 years of ownership”.

Charity Night on the Pier

On 10 March Cromer Pier will host the 6th charity night that Graham Jones has organised and it promises to be an exceptionally good show, which will include local Comedian Pat Nearney. In all, Graham estimates that some £12,000 has been raised for various charities, including Sheringham Little Theatre Stars Appeal, Help for Heroes, Air Ambulance, and the current beneficiaries Break, The Benjamin Foundation and Playing for Cake.

Graham is grateful that the musicians give their time for free and the famous Cromer pier theatre provide a heavily discounted use of the theatre. He said “They are a great bunch of people working at the Pier who are so helpful – I particularly appreciate the skills of the technical people.” One unusual entertainer in this year show will be Russian Musician Boris Konoshenko who currently lives in Swafield. He will accompany popular mezzo soprano Maggy Day, a singer who has been influenced by such as Bette Midler, Eva Cassidy and the soulful sounds of Billie Holiday. Boris Konoshenko will also sing a Russian Folk song in English. Ticket are now on sale at the Pier Theatre 01263 512495 – book early for the best seats. There will also be a grand draw organised by Break and Benjamin Foundation and the prizes will include two free tickets to the famous Summer Pier show.

Hickling Broad & later Stubb Mill for Winter Raptor Roost on 18 February 12:30pm – 5pm this event is for both beginners and reasonably experienced birders.

Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton's Lodge car park, off Lion's Mouth, NR11 8PS at the western end of the estate.

We will first look for winter species, particularly wildfowl and waders, at Hickling Broad (a walk of perhaps an hour around the reserve reed-bed) and then walk to Stubb Mill to watch the winter raptor & crane roost. This is a lunchtime and afternoon trip.

Saturday 3rd March 2018 Cromer Community Centre

To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. As usual, children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs.

'All About Swifts' talk with Dick Newell on 22 February 7.30pm - 9:30pm - since his retirement in 2002, Dick Newell has devoted much time to those aerial masters of the sky – swifts. Their noisy acrobatic flights over our towns and villages for just a few short weeks in summer have become increasingly less common in recent years, prompting Dick to find out what could be done to reverse their decline in Britain. As a result, many projects have been implemented and ideas generated, some of which are documented on actionforswifts.blogspot.co.uk. In 2016 Dick and ‘Action for Swifts’ were given a Marsh Award for Innovative Ornithology. His talk will cover the lifestyle of Common Swifts, the reasons for their decline, their migrations, and ideas for nest boxing. Venue - Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.

We will meet at the Hickling NWT car-park NR12 0BW at 12.30 for an initial al fresco lunch (bring your own!). The grid reference is TG 428 222. The NWT Visitor Centre has picnic tables and toilets. Currently their web site does not indicate any opening hours for the cafe.

The afternoon raptor-watch is at Stubb Mill, which is reached with a moderate walk from the NWT car-park. Stout footwear or wellies are essential as some areas are wet underfoot. Warm windproof clothing is also essential because the raptor watch involves standing in the open, possibly for a couple of hours, which can be cold, but its also rewarding with the possibility of seeing Common Cranes, Hen Harriers, Marsh Harriers, Merlin, Buzzards, Short eared and Barn Owls coming in to roost. As the raptors can be distant a telescope is useful if you have one. Children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. The walk will be led by Janice Darch.

Crab and Lobster Gardening Festival 2018

The Crab and Lobster Festival is a lively weekend celebration. Now into its 9th year it has become a major fixture on the Cromer calendar drawing many thousands of visitors to the town.

It is a feast of fun, food, art, heritage and entertainment, with a wide range of events and activities - the festival celebrates local links with the sea over the festival weekend, this year 19 - 20 May. The fun starts on Friday night with a traditional seaside variety concert at the Famous Pier Pavilion Theatre in Cromer and continues over the weekend.

For 2018 there is a new addition to the festival on Saturday 19 May - the Crab and Lobster Gardening Festival to be held in North Lodge Park. This festival fringe event will build on the enormous success of the Crab and Lobster Festival, providing the thousands of visitors with an extra, different focus.

During the day there will be numerous gardening themed events for all from experienced gardeners to young (aspiring) gardeners, with a range of gardening related stalls, including many plant specialists, selling a range of plants and other products for the garden.

Among the activities, children will be able to plant sunflowers in the Park, enter a mini-scarecrow competition, and create garden angels. Alongside the stalls there will be gardening advice, a plant swap and demonstrations.

If you would like to take part in this exciting new experience, please get in touch with your proposals for the day. The organisers are looking for creative ideas around the gardening theme to make the day really special, and for local businesses to take a stall to bring their products to the attendees.

Please get in touch – friends@northlodgepark.org.uk - for more information or visit the park website NorthLodgePark.org.uk where stalls can be booked.

Public views sought on improvements to Pretty Corner Woods

Win a free family swim by filling in survey

North Norfolk District Council would like to hear the public’s views about what improvements could be made to Pretty Corner Woods.

The 165 acres of woodland and heathland near Sheringham are owned partly by North Norfolk District Council and partly by The Woodland Trust.

Both parties would like to know the Pretty Corner Boardwalk public’s views on the woods, including how often they visit, what they currently use the woods for and what facilities they would like to see added.

Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said “We want to hear people’s views on this lovely piece of woodland. Five years ago we saw the completion of an investment scheme which included a number of improvements such as car park resurfacing, a wheelchair friendly path, waymarked trails, a boardwalk, leaflets and events.

Following the success of that investment, we believe there is still huge potential for future investment at Pretty Corner Woods to make it an even better place to visit. Public participation is a vital part of making this woodland even better and determining our next steps.”

The survey runs until late March and can be found at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/PCWSurvey.

PARALYTIC SHELLFISH POISONING INCIDENTS • Low level of risk to beach users and their pets, although simple precautions are recommended • No risk to people or pets from seawater

• Latest testing on species including crabs and whelks finds that toxin levels are below regulatory limits

• Appeal for owners of pets that have become ill after consuming items on a beach to report it to the relevant District or Borough Council

It can now be confirmed that the death of a Siberian Husky after eating a shore crab at Felixstowe Ferry, Suffolk, earlier this month is highly likely to have been because of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning. This follows similar findings in relation to the Golden Retriever that died after eating fish on the beach at Cley in North Norfolk on New Year’s Eve. Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) is a naturally occurring marine biotoxin.

Testing carried out by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science found high concentrations of PSP toxins in starfish and dab connected with the incident at Cley. Very high concentrations were found in starfish and partially digested shore crab connected with the incident at Felixstowe Ferry.

Analysis of pathological samples and symptomology of the affected dogs also indicates that their deaths were likely to have been a consequence of ingesting PSP-contaminated (marine) animals. PSP toxins are primarily associated with bivalve

01692 405301

ND ME M CO RE

molluscs such as mussels, clams, oysters and scallops. These are filter feeders and can accumulate PSP toxins, which are produced naturally by certain species of microscopic algae. Algal blooms do not usually occur during winter months in the UK and the source of the contamination is being investigated.

Recent analysis of bivalve mollusc and water samples, collected through the Official Control monitoring programme, have been negative for PSP and the algae associated with PSP production in the UK. Testing on a variety of marine species, including brown/edible crab, spider crabs, shore crabs, velvet swimming crabs, dab and whelks from North Norfolk and Suffolk, have revealed low levels of PSP toxin in some of the samples and no PSP at detectable levels in others. PSP Toxins around the regulatory limit for bivalve molluscs were found in one sunstar starfish.

It is thought that the contaminated animals were washed up on beaches during winter storms and are likely to have now been washed back into the sea. Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (Eastern IFCA) is co-ordinating the activity of relevant agencies in seeking to establish the source and extent of the PSP contamination.

The CEO of Eastern IFCA, Julian Gregory, said ‘It is important that we take a measured and joined-up approach in working to find out what the extent of PSP contamination may be. At this

ED

point there is nothing to indicate that species sold for human consumption such as brown crabs or lobster are affected but as a precautionary measure we are sampling a range of marine animals to ensure that any on-going PSP contamination is identified.’

There is no risk from the presence of PSP toxins in seawater, and the test results from sampling undertaken so far does not indicate that such contamination currently exists. Recreational users of the coast, in particular dog walkers, are advised to take simple precautions to prevent their pets from consuming anything found on a beach. Whilst walking on the coast, these may include keeping their pets under close control, on leads or muzzled, if considered appropriate.

Dr Andrew Turner, from Cefas, said ‘There is no risk to people or animals from the seawater. The only risk is from ingesting PSP-contaminated animals found on the beach, so simple precautions should be followed to ensure that pets and people do not eat anything they find on the beach.’ Analysis of the Dab associated with the incident at Cley indicates that it was contaminated with PSP, albeit at a level below the regulatory maximum allowed. Recreational sea anglers, who often fish for this species at this time of year, may wish to return their catch to the sea and avoid retaining it for consumption as a precautionary measure. Owners of pets that have become ill after consuming items on a beach are asked to report the matter to the District or Borough Council for the area where the incident occurred.

REDWINGS REHOMES FIRST DONKEY AT DINOSAUR PARK

A little donkey in need of companionship has started the New Year with a new friend after Redwings Horse Sanctuary rehomed its first rescued donkey – to a dinosaur park!

Adorable Arnie, a Miniature Mediterranean donkey, had been living alone at the Secret Animal Garden at the Dinosaur Adventure Park, near Norwich, following the passing of his previous companion.

Donkeys are sensitive souls who form strong bonds and Arnie’s animal keepers knew he needed a new friend to prevent him feeling lonely, so they approached Redwings for help. Due to the availability of suitable rescued donkeys, Redwings hadn’t rehomed one of these lovable long-eared creatures before but – as luck would have it – the perfect candidate had just arrived at the Sanctuary!

Handsome Addison had come to Redwings For al spo your l r ts in N gea Nor orth r folk

within a group of six donkeys from a fellow animal sanctuary in August last year but had yet to form any strong attachments within his herd.

So after a thorough medical and behavioural check, Addison was cleared to travel to the Dinosaur Adventure Park where he was happily welcomed by Arnie just before Christmas, and the two have been enjoying each other’s company ever since.

Rachel Angell, Redwings Operations and Rehoming Manager, said: “Donkeys crave company which is why we were delighted to help find Arnie a new friend and we hope he and Addison will be really happy together.

“Due to their strong bonds, donkeys normally need to be rehomed in pairs or small groups so it was by chance that lovely Addison arrived at the Sanctuary still looking for his own special champion. With its long history of caring for animals, we knew he would be in safe and loving hands at the Secret Animal Garden – although we never expected to rehome a

donkey to a dinosaur park!

“We hope this will now pave the way for us to look at rehoming more donkeys in the future. Nicole Douglass, Secret Animal Garden Manager, added “Arnie’s little face lit up when he saw Addison – he was so happy to see another donkey and followed him around all day!

“They’ve settled in well together and share a stable. Addison is even coming over to meet visitors which is lovely and everyone is asking about him. All the team here love him already and we look forward to the boys becoming best buddies!

Redwings currently has 500 rescued horses living in Guardian homes across the country with many going to successfully enjoy all kinds of disciplines from cross country to showing, as well as serve as treasured companions to other horses.

Choir Needed

I lost my 76 year brother just before Christmas. His last years were spent in a care home in London. When I got back to Salthouse where I live I was in my garden watching the seagulls thinking he never had this joy. I wrote a song ‘he never saw the seagulls fly’.

XQ59559K001 05-Sep-2017 2:40

After I finished the song something was telling me that it was crying out for a choir. I would be more than happy to send the song via email in its rough form (just me on the guitar) to anyone who think they could help me at tandmterry@hotmail.co.uk Tom Terry

Jo Bosch, the National Trust’s Visitor Experience Manager at Blickling said “We’re really excited to be working with Les Enfants Terribles. We wanted to offer our visitors a creative new way for reflecting on the importance of books and highlight Blickling’s collection that’s in need of our care. A third of children are living in poverty in North Norfolk, new research shows

Data released today by the End Child Poverty coalition shows that 27% of children in North Norfolk live in child poverty, compared to over half of children in the poorest areas and less than a tenth in the richest.

New statistics show the extent of child poverty across the UK broken down by constituency, local authority and ward. In North Norfolk 27.43% (3,656 children) of children live in poverty, similar to the national average of 26.96% (3,702,020).

Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, said “These figures are seriously concerning. Something is really wrong with the way our country is run if the UK, one of the wealthiest in the world, can’t ensure the well-being of a quarter of its children. The Government needs to seriously consider how it is prioritising its spending, and the effect that is having on future generations.”

The new figures reveal that there are now constituencies within the UK where

more than half of children are growing up in poverty - compared to one in ten, in the areas with the lowest child poverty rates.

The figures also show that some of the most deprived areas of the UK have seen the biggest increases in child poverty since the coalition's local child poverty figures for December 2015. Increases of 10 percentage points in some areas demonstrate the growing crisis of child poverty in the UK.

“I struggle with the day-to-day-costs (of living) – with prices going up and up, the money coming in doesn’t reflect my outgoings. If the children need a new school uniform or if the washing machine breaks down – I can’t afford it. I make sure my children get what they need first. I cut back on myself.” Sonia

As price rises risk pushing ever larger numbers of children below the poverty line, the coalition is calling on the Chancellor to end the freeze on children's benefits.

Former North Norfolk Police Officer, Graeme Sadd is cycling 10,000 kilometres during 2018 to raise awareness and funds for Combat Stress. Graeme’s aim is to raise £10,000, £1 for every kilometre cycled.

Graeme was born in Norwich and educated at Eaton(CNS) school. Graeme served in the Royal Air Force for 23 years and flew on the E3D Sentry aircraft, based at RAF Waddington Lincoln. During his service he flew as part of the NATO peace keeping force during the Bosnia/Kosovo wars. Graeme retired from the Royal Air Force in 2001 and joined the Norfolk Police force serving in North Norfolk for 8 years.

In 2016 Graeme was diagnosed with Post

Sheringham Stroke Support Group

The Sheringham Stroke Support Group is an affiliated member of the Stroke Association, but is financially self-supporting.

Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) relating to his time served in the RAF. Graeme was referred to Combat Stress and received treatment for his mental health issues and is currently learning to live with his illness. As part of the recovery program and to raise awareness for the Combat Stress Charity, Graeme is undertaking this cycling challenge.

During the year Graeme plans to participate in several charity long distance cycle rides, including the London Nightride and Tour du Norfolk Combat Stress is a charity which helps

service personnel who are suffering mental health issues, including PTSD. PTSD is a crippling illness, which many service personnel who have seen, or been in contact with military conflict, suffer from. Many, like Graeme will not even realise that they are suffering a mental illness or are afraid to admit that they have a problem. Combat Stress addresses these issues and helps service personnel regain a near normal life again. All funds raised will go directly to Combat Stress.

The Sheringham Group was started in 1985 by Rosemary Klein, who retired in 2011. Its aim is to provide practical and emotional support to all those people living in North Norfolk whose lives have been affected by stroke, including their carers. The Group offers a friendly, sociable environment in which stoke survivors and their carers can meet and interact with people whose needs are similar.

Our meetings are held fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons from 2.15 to 3.45. Spring session resumes 7 March until 20 June, and our Autumn session from 5 September to 5 December, followed by our pre-Christmas lunch on 12 December. A variety of guest speakers and other entertainments, and exercises are conducted once a month. We may be able to provide a free doorto-door taxi service for anyone who may need transport. We meet at the Communal Day Room at Anchor Close, Sheringham.

We make a nominal charge of £10 to cover each session (carers come free), but there are no other expenses.

The Group is also looking for someone to take on the duties of Treasurer. If you can spare a few hours a session to look after our finances, we would like to hear from you.

Did you know …

… Guide Dogs for the Blind have set up a support network for people who are blind or partially sighted in North Norfolk called the North Walsham Guide Dog Forum.

Guide Dogs for the Blind has a network of locally based support forums across the UK. North Norfolk has its very own forum called the North Walsham Guide Dog Forum (NWGDF). This group meets every 3 months in North Walsham.

Chris Waller from Sheringham is visually impaired and a newly appointed volunteer for Guide Dogs as media handler for NWGDF. He commented "The purpose of the forums is to have a community group who can learn from key speakers, share and learn information and to raise issues which maybe concerning those with visual impairments in their local area. The forum can look at ways to resolve those issues with support via community engagement staff from Guide Dogs Organisation, and other subject matter experts. There is also a social element after the forum as some of the attendees enjoy a natter, spot of lunch and coffee in the pub afterwards". The forum is for: • All people who are blind, partially sighted • Their families, or carers and

• Anyone who would like to know more about Guide Dogs or those who may simply want to volunteer or would like to fundraise for the charity – every penny counts!

Current attendees are spread across North Norfolk including Sheringham, Cromer, Mundesley and North Walsham. "We have got some great guest speakers lined up for this year’s meetings. On 26 April we have Equal Lives and a Guide Dog puppy walker talking about puppy socialisation and early training. On 24 July Age UK and also the CEO of Norfolk and Norwich Blind Society will be our speakers and on 30 October our theme will be Fire Safety.

Chris commented "Although new to the role, I can already appreciate the value of this forum to our community for those sighted and those not. The enthusiasm and willingness of speakers attending the forum is a reflection of the great community spirit in North Norfolk, working together to achieve results. But we'd like to see even more people attend the forum, and learn even more"

She took a long time to gain any weight but now is nice and healthy. In spring she will be going to a home to live in an enclosed area as unfortunately she has a sight problem.

My latest arrival came in on 27 January. Corton was found in a garden under a bush at only 300grms.

I don't know how he had managed to survive for so long. I have given him a course of antibiotics and he is slowly gaining weight, so hopefully he will be big enough for a release in April.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

The new cats mentioned last time have adapted well to being in care and we have had lots of interested in them with one already having been offered a new home. Stephanie is now contacting those interested and to be fair to people deals with all enquiries in the order she receives their telephone calls. If, therefore, there is more than one person interested in a particular cat she will check whether the first caller is able to offer the home and environment the cat requires before contacting the next person. If the first caller and Stephanie believe the cat would be suitable a time and date will be arranged for them to visit the cat and if all goes well arrangements are made for the cat to go to its new home. Only then can Stephanie contact them to advise whether the cat is still available. Unfortunately people who contact via the website are advised they do need to call they can on occasion be too late to offer a home to a particular cat.

Over the years we have seen many cats and although we love them all while with us, some are remembered over the years because of their history. One such cat was Ivy, a dear little black and white cat handed into our care nearly 10 years ago as a stray. As she was a stray she was blood tested for FIV/ FELV at the vets and unfortunately the test came back positive. A further test was then carried out by an outside laboratory as recommended by Cats Protection and although we have often then been advised the second test shows a negative result, unfortunately in Ivy’s this was not the case. Being FIV positive Ivy needed a home where she would be kept inside to prevent her infecting other cats or because of her compromised immune system, being infected by other cats. It was not long before a lovely couple who lived in an area where it was not safe to allow a cat to roam offered her a home. As the lady of the house had health problems, having Ivy to love and care for was a great comfort to her. Over the years we have had updates on Ivy from her new family and until recently she had been in remarkably good health. Sadly, last week we learnt that she had died. Ivy was approximately 12 years old and had 10 goods years being a much loved member of the household. For those whose home situation prevents them from having a cat which can go outside, a cat that has tested positive for FIV is a possibility. We have

re-homed several over the years and all have been very loving cats with nice gentle natures.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

MP opens new Dementia Inclusive Café in Mundesley

Last month Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, met with customers and said a few words to mark the opening of Open Doors, a new café for the elderly and those with complex needs.

The café was initiated by Eleanor Jones, Wendy Fredericks, and other members of Mundesley Parish church supported by the Revd Andrew Jones.

Their vision for a community café came early in 2017 when they noticed the need for support and friendships amongst the local community’s older generations, and for social environments which were inclusive for those with additional needs.

Eleanor and Revd Andrew Jones, whose daughter has multiple learning difficulties, have personally experienced the complications carers can face taking their loved ones to public and social places.

Mrs Jones said “There have been many times when it has been easier to stay at home, but the more times I have done this the more confidence I lost. I am sure many people feel this way but don’t know where to start. We hope that the Open Door café has created a place for everyone, somewhere that cares for carers and those are cared for. A safe space where no one is judged and everyone is valued as part of our wonderful community.”

Mr Lamb said “It’s really inspiring to see members of the community creating dementia and complex need-friendly spaces, especially considering the high levels of social isolation that conditions like dementia can lead

to. Open Door is a fantastic initiative which I am proud to have opened. I hope it flourishes.”

The café was made possible through fundraising on the part of many local businesses and charities, including Friends of Mundesley Inshore Lifeboat, Mundesley Fish and Fry, Affinity Digital Agents, Trunch Village Store, Aviva and TESCO, amongst others.

The café hopes to host outside agencies like Age UK in the future to provide wider assistance to those attending the café.

Always a warm welcome

Many of the parishioners from Cromer Church have signed up for ‘40acts’, a generosity challenge created by the charity Stewardship, which encourages participants to do at least one different act of kindness each day of Lent. The challenge was followed by over 100,000 people last year between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, notching up an estimated 4 million generous acts in that time.

To kick off the challenge Cromer Church gave out ‘Love Heart’ sweets on Wednesday 14 February outside the Parish Church. This marked the start of their challenge, during which '40activists' receive a daily email with their challenge and a thought for the day from one of 40 chosen Christian authors, leaders and celebrities.

Simon Fenn, Head of Mission said “Last year’s response to our 40acts challenge was overwhelmingly positive and encouraging. People were genuinely touched by our simple acts of kindness and generosity, whether it was packing bags at Morrisons, giving out free chocolate bars or supporting the Cromer food-bank praying with people on the street, giving away free Easter eggs or just being a listening ear. They loved the fact that we valued them and were willing to make

a personal connection. After receiving a chocolate bar and a ‘because you’re loved’ note, one lady was inspired to donate some of her furniture to the local Foodbank community store. We hope that during this 40-day challenge we will be able to demonstrate our faith in practical ways, make a positive difference and inspire people to approach Lent differently - don't just give up, give out! As well as doing individual acts of kindness, we have organised some creative events to engage with the wider community. We will be sharing ours acts of random kindness on social media, watch this space! Search for #Cromer40Acts on Twitter or check our Facebook page.”

Stewardship’s 40acts challenge has grown in popularity since the Christian charity first launched it in 2010. Six years on and millions of acts of generosity later, the challenge continues to astonish the team behind it.

Debbie Wright, Head of Content at Stewardship said “Every year more and more people choose to do Lent generously, and use generous acts to demonstrate their faith in the lead up to Easter. We never cease to be amazed at the creativity and kindness that we see, as people start to share their stories on social media. It’s great to see Cromer Church taking up the challenge and making a generous difference to the community of North Norfolk this Lent.”

Curtains

My head is going round and round, I’m getting in a tizz. I’m measuring for curtains - what a pain it is! Inches into centimetres, turn them back again. How many yards or metres do I need for each curtain? Should they be ready-lined or with linings separate? Should they be plain or patterned, brightly coloured or sedate? So many choices I must make, it makes me want to cry! Slats or nets for privacy? These problems multiply! I think I’ll have a cup of tea and rest my weary brain, So I’m refreshed and ready, to face it once again. After hours and hours of this, I’m really in a bind, So stuff the nets and curtains - I’m going to have a blind!
