Schoolboy’s appeal to help the homeless
A seven-year-old schoolboy has been so moved by the plight of the homeless, he has launched an on-line appeal for raise money for a Norfolk charity supporting them.
Joel Swash from Mundesley features in a short family video asking people to “give a quid” – which has already raised £360, more than seven times his initial £50 target. In it Joel Swash with his mum Karen brother Ethan and he says: dad Philip. “Sometimes Photo: Richard Batson) when we go to Norwich on a fun day out we see them on the streets in the freezing cold – and it makes a fun day out a sad day out.” Continued on page 4...

Plea for artist to help brighten hospital wall
Schoolboy’s appeal to help the homeless
Calling all artists – can you help brighten a dull brick wall to provide a better outlook for hospital patients?
Continued from front cover...
Proud dad Philip, who runs Swash Nosh catering, said: “It came out of the blue, but he has always been interested in the plight of the homeless. I remember my wife Karen giving money to a Big Issue seller in Grantham and Joel was asking loads of questions. And he once took half his uneaten pizza from a Norwich restaurant to give to a homeless man outside.
The plea comes from the Friends of North Walsham War Memorial who are seeking to improve the view from a ward window which currently looks The hospital wall in need of out on to a plain wall. The plan brightening up with a mural is to provide an 8ft square mural to fix on the wall to lift the spirits of patients, and their visitors, looking through the window.
Joel, who goes to Mundesley Junior School, found the Norwich-based homelessness charity the St Martins Housing Trust on his phone and said he wanted to do something for them. He said the response to his appeal was “brilliant and thanked everyone who had supported him and the charity.
The Swash family, including elder brother Ethan 13, are all big charity supporters, helping a variety of causes from the Community Sports Foundation to a hospital neo-natal unit. Mr Swash, who is also well known through his catering at Mundesley Golf Club, said: “Joel has seen all the work we do, and we are very proud he is following suit.
Friends chairman Keith Jarvis said: “We would love to be able to improve the outlook – but we need the help of a local artist who has the time create something lovely and colourful. It could be sunflowers, or a summery sky – something upbeat that will put a smile on people’s faces and make a big improvement to a plain boring wall. We can provide the materials – such as marine plywood and paints – and have permission from the hospital authorities to put it up.
Dr Jan Sheldon, chief executive of St Martins said, “We are delighted to have Joel’s support and thank him for his compassionate and mature response after seeing people sleeping rough in Norwich. His plea to his family and friends to ‘give a quid’ has clearly touched their hearts and shows how a small request can make a really big difference. The money Joel has raised will go towards St Martins’ new accommodation project, which will mean more bed spaces are available to homeless people who desperately need support.
“If there is an artist out there who could help by giving their time towards this community venture we would love to hear from them to discuss their ideas. The mural could be done in the artist’s studio and installed on completion. The role of the Friends is to use money donated to the public to improve the quality of life for patients, staff and visitors this small but important scheme could help do that – and hopefully harness the artistic skills we have here in north Norfolk, he added. “And it one project we could progress during lockdown and Covid restrictions, which have put some of our other schemes on ice.

We understand that some young people would rather have private support outside school, so we are very happy to be available at weekends or in the evening if daytime is difficult.
A Note from the editor
As we emerge from the second lockdown, Christmas is around the corner and thoughts turn to making the best of things in these strange times. We may not be free to have the Christmas we would like but we can still celebrate the season, albeit in different ways.
The high streets are looking festive and shop windows are full of sparkle and tempting goodies. Many of our local businesses have been brought to the brink through the pandemic and are hoping Christmas may save the day, so shop locally if you can. But spare a thought for those less fortunate, charities are having a hard time too supporting those in need, so why not give an extra gift this Christmas to your chosen cause.
Sessions can be via Zoom/MS Teams/phone/email or face to face (where restrictions and safety allows) and you can have more time with us if you need extra help.
Even though restrictions have been eased, it remains more vital than ever to observe the Covid guidelines, keep ourselves safe and protect our vulnerable to minimize the rise in cases. That being said, remember those on their own this Christmas, let family, neighbours and friends know you are thinking of them and they are not forgotten.
If you’re aged 15-19 (or up to 25 for young people with additional needs) we can offer you confidential sessions to support you with

It just remains for me to wish all our readers and advertisers a Happy Christmas and a better New Year.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS? SOLICITORS?
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offe fers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

opportunity for dreams to wander into forbidden territory and a chance for smiles and gossip.
Just in time for Christmas
Yesterday’s Books The series of Yesterday’s books tells of life in a village near each of us in North Norfolk. Those fortunate to be friends of the books will know that they chronicle the story of John who in Yesterday’s Loves and Laughter lived with his sister Freda in a farm cottage. He worked with his friends George, Arthur and Charlie for Mr Whitlow on his small farm. In that book Freda marries Charlie and John is left on his own.
New – Yesterday’s Wonders and Worries. This is the fifth in the saga of some men who work on a farm near you and their families in the days of the nineteen fifties.
However, he met Ellen and in Hearts and Homes he marries her and sets up home in his little cottage which has neither electricity nor water. One of their neighbours, Robert Dennis decides in Yesterday’s Labours Lost to take over his father’s smallholding and his generation sees the last of the smallholders whose lore and language has been lost. In Yesterday’s Fancies and Follies, the nineteen fifties wear on and there is time and
They were very different days to those we know today. They were quiet and peaceful with very few of the things we take for granted now. The people and events of the village and the surrounding area were the limits of people’s experience and interests although the wider world was beginning to intrude.
But in the nineteen fifties things were changing and the countryside was on the cusp of radical changes in ways of traditional life.
Ea t too-In
Still n Ope
And now in Yesterday’s Worries and Wonders the story leads on to the middle of the decade. In the quiet days of the countryside and in a village sheltered from the main highways, the people and their happenings are important to all of them. Illness comes to cause worries and medical facilities and social welfare are not as they are today, and people are justifiably worried. Also, wonderful things happen that give rise to happiness for many.
Christmas Do’s & Dont’s Support your local businesses
We too can share in the worries and wonders that befall characters who have become well known to us and are our friends and neighbours. If you know these books you will have become accustomed to the gentle and graphic style that recreates the nineteen fifties for us. So, this further book in the series will provide several hours reading and re-reading over the Christmas period. It will beat television for us.
As the government’s latest Covid rules appear to prevent us from having Christmas Do’s in North Norfolk this year due to the “bubble” rules Bann Thai has come up with the Bann Thai Christmas Don’t instead!! To enjoy a fun packed Bann Thai style Christmas Don’t all you need to do is pre-order all the food and drink from us to enjoy in the comfort of your own home. As a special treat we will provide you with Party Poppers and Christmas Crackers with every order over £20 and you still get your loyalty card stamped as well! Takeaways and drinks (pre-ordered only) are available for pick up from us or delivery can be arranged at a nominal cost in the local area. This offer is available from Wednesday to Sunday from 2nd December until New Years Eve 2020. (Excluding 25th, 26th & 31st Dec 2020)
If these books are unknown to you and your interest has been sparked by this poster you may well want to read the previous books. You may find all the five books in the shops below, or an order will be taken, each for the more than reasonable price of £7.95 each.
They are unique; there’s nothing else to compare with them. Could they be an indulgence for yourself or a present for someone you love?

Dementia Friendly status was awarded in 2018!
Some of you may have read the article by Daniel Moxon in the October 18th, 2020 edition of the EDP, in which Jennie Cummings-Knight, Chair of Trustees at Age Concern - North Norfolk acknowledged the importance of social interaction for us all but in particular for those with dementia. She said: “Social interaction is one of the best things you can do to avoid dementia getting worse, especially in its early stages, so lockdown in March was absolutely the worst thing for those people at that time.”
Age Concern - North Norfolk gained Dementia Friendly status in November 2018 and has worked hard to help people experiencing loneliness and isolation. But it was not until September that Age Concern was able to reopen and start to invite people back to the Day Centre.
As we come out of another lockdown and find ourselves in Tier 2 we, at Age Concern want to reassure those older members of our community, who must continue to take care as winter approaches, that the Day Centre in Cremer Street is open to offer company, support, a cooked lunch or even an assisted bath in our state-of-the-art facility.
VACANCY Day Centre Manager Registered Charity No. 1097115 Starting Salary will be £25-£28,000pa 30 hrs.pw pro rata, dependant upon qualifications and experience. (There will be a six-month probationary period, extendable at the Trustees discretion). Summary of the position: Age Concern North Norfolk is a Charity committed to supporting the older people in our community. We provide day care services and lunch club, face-to-face befriending and drop-in clubs, across our area.
For those of you who may be isolating, we can still offer a friendly face, a befriending phone call and even that cooked meal through our ’Meals on Heels’ service. Due to restrictions and social distancing, we have to limit numbers at the Day Centre, so booking is important to help with planning and ensuring we can support individual needs. Age Concern - North Norfolk Chair of Trustees Jennie Cummings-Knight. Amy Elizabeth Photography Credit: Archant
Mrs CummingsKnight added: “It’s up to people to make their own decisions of whether they want to socialise, but there are so many who have missed the contact outside their homes so it’s great for them.”
The Trustees are seeking a highly motivated, professional with the skills and enthusiasm to manage our older people’s Community Hubs and actively engage with our local communities to promote Age Concern North Norfolk and promote the benefits the Charity can offer.
Are you that individual? Are you someone who can provide effective leadership to a small team of Staff and Volunteers; to promote, manage and develop the services provided by the organisation. To develop a network of partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders and to work closely with the Charity’s Board of Trustees to develop and strengthen the Charity. The Applicant for this post will preferable hold a Degree in Social Care, Nursing, Management or related field; have experience of working in a Care setting or similar for 3 years; have recognised leadership and management skills with small teams; have excellent organisational skills, computer skills, numeracy and literacy skills; able to prepare accurate reports and present reports to the Trustees; be both confident and competent within a care setting; friendly and approachable to Service Users and their family members or carers and actively seek new Service Users. Holding a full, clean driver’s licence is essential.

Norfolk begins its Tier 2 restrictions
On behalf of the Norfolk Resilience Forum Today, Norfolk enters the next stage of restrictions in Tier 2 – the second of the three new tiers.
This is the time for Norfolk residents to work together, to remain cautious and to keep our distance from others, in order to drive our rates of infection down before Christmas.
Tier 2 means that people will only be allowed to meet in groups of up to six when they are outside (The rule of 6) but there cannot be any mixing of households anywhere indoors, both at home and when in a public place, with the exception of support bubbles. There are also restrictions on how businesses operate, particularly around opening hours, and what people can do as part of an organised sport.
The rules around support bubbles (where a single-adult household can group with another household as if they were one) have been extended to help families with very young children or with continuous care needs. There is also a set of rules around childcare bubbles that apply to families with children under the age of 14 (as well as vulnerable adults). For full details see www.gov.uk/guidance/tier-2-high-alert
You should continue to follow social distancing guidance with people outside of your household or support bubble. This is critical to keeping you, your family and your friends as safe as possible.
The start of this next phase comes as rates of the virus in many areas of Norfolk continue to drop slightly, reflecting the national trend following lockdown, which came into effect on November 5. However, not all areas of the county have seen such figures.
Cllr Andrew Proctor, Leader of Norfolk County Council and Chair of the Norfolk Engagement Board, said: “While our aim was to leave the national lockdown in Tier 1, being in Tier 2 with much of the rest of the country, means we do face further restrictions so we must now work together towards a sustained decline in the virus to help us to return to lesser restrictions as soon as possible. It is essential that we stick to the rules, work together to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our county and ensure that the rates of infection continue to go downwards. The best way to protect ourselves and others is to keep our distance, wash our hands and cover our faces. It is also important to understand that people must continue to follow social distancing measures and isolate if
they have symptoms, test positive or are asked to isolate by contact tracing teams.”
Chief Constable, Simon Bailey, added “Our journey through this pandemic is not yet over and we must continue to work together to stop the spread of infections. We must all follow the restrictions in Tier 2 wherever we are in the county or country to ensure that we can return to lesser measures as soon as possible. These rules have been put in place to protect us all and we need you to work with us and follow them.”
Information on the national tiers is available at www.gov.uk/guidance/local-restriction-tierswhat-you-need-to-know#all-tiers
In Tier 2:
• you must not socialise with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public place • you must not socialise in a group of more than 6 people outside, including in a garden or a public space – this is called the ‘rule of 6’ • businesses and venues can continue to operate, in a COVID-Secure manner, other than those which remain closed by law, such as nightclubs • pubs and bars must close, unless operating as restaurants. Hospitality venues can only serve alcohol with substantial meals • hospitality businesses selling food or drink for consumption on their premises are required to: 1. provide table service only, in premises which sell alcohol 2. close between 11pm and 5am (hospitality venues in airports, ports, transport services and motorway service areas are exempt) 3. stop taking orders after 10pm • hospitality businesses and venues selling food and drink for consumption off the premises can continue to do so after 10pm as long as this is through delivery service, click-andcollect or drive-through • early closure (11pm) applies to casinos, cinemas, theatres, museums, bowling alleys, amusement arcades, funfairs, theme parks, adventure parks and activities, and bingo
Services to resume after lockdown ends
Key council services suspended during lockdown reopen as national restrictions end.
we continued to support vulnerable people and kept schools, public transport and recycling sites operating. All our services will operate in a Covid-secure manner and it’s really important we follow the Government’s rules, to minimise the spread of the virus. If we all do this, we stand a better chance of moving into tier one as soon as possible and getting on the path to a more normal life next year.”
Services suspended when lockdown started and which will resume December 2nd include libraries and weddings. Adult learning courses will continue online, pending a review next month (January). The Norwich Castle, Tide and Time and Lynn Museums will reopen from 3rd December.
All council services will comply with the tier two rules that will apply to Norfolk from December 2nd..
Council leader Councillor Andrew Proctor said: “During lockdown,

halls. Cinemas, theatres and concert halls can stay open beyond 11pm in order to conclude performances that start before 10pm • public attendance at outdoor and indoor events (performances and shows) is permitted, limited to whichever is lower: 50% capacity, or either 2,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors • public attendance at spectator sport and business events can resume inside and outside, subject to social contact rules and limited to whichever is lower: 50% capacity, or either 2,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors • places of worship remain open but you must not socialise with people from outside of your household or support bubble while you are indoors there, unless a legal exemption applies • weddings and funerals can go ahead with restrictions on numbers of attendees – 15 people can attend wedding ceremonies and receptions, 30 people can attend funeral ceremonies, and 15 people can attend linked commemorative events such as wakes or stonesettings. • organised outdoor sport, and physical activity and exercise classes can continue • organised indoor sport, physical activity and exercise classes will only be permitted if it is possible for people to avoid mixing with people they do not live with (or share a support bubble with). There are exceptions for indoor disability sport, sport for educational purposes and supervised sport and physical activity for under-18s, which can take place with larger groups mixing • you can continue to travel to venues or amenities which are open, but should aim to reduce the number of journeys you make where possible • if you live in a tier 2 area, you must continue to follow tier 2 rules when you travel to a tier 1 area. Avoid travel to or overnight stays in tier 3 areas other than where necessary, such as for work, education, youth services, to receive medical treatment, or because of caring responsibilities. You can travel through a tier 3 area as a part of a longer journey

Residents in Norfolk are being reminded that they are the most important book a test. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will link in the Test and Trace system The steps to take if you or any member of your household display Covid 19 symptoms are simple and can be key in preventing infections being spread. If you are symptomatic you must isolate as soon as you notice symptoms and to have no face to face contact with anyone outside of your household. It is important to do this straight away, and for everyone in the household to isolate as they could also be infectious even without symptoms. As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to
Norfolk’s Covid Winter Support scheme opens to residents
Anyone in Norfolk suffering financial hardship this winter could receive help and support thanks to a new scheme that launches Wednesday 2nd December. Norfolk County Council, alongside local councils across Norfolk, is aiming to support as many residents as possible this winter to access financial and other support if they are facing hardship. The scheme is particularly aimed at families and will provide support for those suffering financial hardship over the winter months due to Covid-19. Support is available with food and utility bills. Applications to the new support scheme can be made online, via the existing Norfolk Assistance Scheme pages at www.norfolk.gov.uk/NAS or applicants can call 0344 800 8020. From Wednesday 2 December, assistance in applying online will also be available through Norfolk Libraries. In addition to this scheme we are working with food voucher company Edenred to provide support for all those eligible for free school meals, children in the early years who receive pupil premium and all of the council’s care leavers during the Christmas holidays. We are encouraging eligible families to register and apply for free school meals through their school, so that they begin to receive support in time for the school holidays. Cllr Andrew Proctor, Leader of Norfolk County Council, said: “The impact of Covid-19 on households in Norfolk has been huge, and we know some people have found it hard to get by as a result. There is no reason anyone in Norfolk should have to go hungry or cold this winter, and this scheme will help people in need through the coldest months of the year. Whether it’s food or bills, our Winter Support scheme offers a lifeline to those worst hit by this pandemic and its effects. I’d encourage those who need help to apply and get the support they need.” The Covid Winter Support scheme can help with: • Day to day living costs, including food and energy bills • Daily essentials such as toiletries, sanitary products and nappies • Food vouchers for the school holidays As part of the wider package of support for families this winter, T TO O SL SLOW OW THE SP SPREAD READ OF C CORONAVIRUS ORONA NORFOLK OLK AVIRUS IN NORF the council is also extending the Norfolk Assistance Scheme, which already provides support for food, fuel, clothes and other essential WE’VE W E’VE DONE IT BEF BEFORE, ORE, household items to SO THIS TIME WE’RE WE’RE Norfolk’s residents BETTER PREPARED BET TER P REP PARED A experiencing hardship. Keeping yourselves and others safe
Coronavirus is still with us. Cases in Norfolk are low and we want to keep them that way. The best thing to do to protect ourselves and others is to continue to wash our hands regularly, keep our distance from others and wear a face covering in shops and on public transport. To protect others, you and everyone living in your house should isolate straight away if you show symptoms. The symptoms are: a new continuous cough; fever; or a loss or change in your taste and smell. As soon as you isolate, visit www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119 to book a test. Everyone is eligible to get a test if they have symptoms. You can choose either a drive-through test or a home test kit. Stay in isolation until you receive your results, which will include instructions on what to do next. NHS Test and Trace will contact people who test positive for Covid-19. They will ask you about who you have been in contact with from two days before onset of symptoms to seven days after. This will identify people at risk who could pass on the virus before (or without) showing symptoms themselves. For more information about how to stay safe and how to get support if you need it whilst isolating visit: norfolk.gov.uk/coronavirus

include instructions on what to do next. Cllr Bill Borrett, Norfolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “This isn’t just about protecting ourselves, but making sure we all play our part to protect everyone around us. We all have friends and family that we want to keep safe – whether that’s parents, elderly grandparents, and even our children. And we need everyone to play their part to help us do that. We all have to work together to keep each other safe.” Cath Byford, Chief Nurse with NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Our call to everyone is, if you have coronavirus symptoms then self-isolate, get a test and help us track down people you have been in contact with. It’s one way that together we can beat this virus.” But Test and Trace isn’t only about symptomatic individuals: when a positive test result arrives, teams of contact tracers will search for everyone the Covid positive individual has been in recent contact with and will alert them. If you are alerted by NHS Test and Trace, you must isolate for 14 days after your contact with the individual. If you develop symptoms, you must book a test at the NHS coronavirus website and your household must isolate.

A Norfolk Local Outbreak Control Plan has been launched under the strapline Protect Ourselves, Protect Others, Protect Norfolk to set out how the county will support the national NHS Test and Trace programme to prevent and contain the spread of coronavirus. The plan sets out how Norfolk’s Public Health will work with a range of County Council departments and community partners to prevent local outbreaks in the first place. However, if outbreaks do occur, the plan sets out how they will be tracked in specific work places, settings, and communities and managed to limit further transmission. Also detailed is how Norfolk residents can find further guidance and support. Norfolk’s Director of Public Health has led on the development of our Local Outbreak Control Plan in partnership with district councils, NHS Chief Executives and the Norfolk Resilience Forum. It was developed after the Government announced that every area of England should produce a plan to prevent and manage local outbreaks of coronavirus as lockdown measures are eased. Prevention is key, and with further restrictions having been lifted, measures such as hand washing, social distancing in public places, and encouraging people to access testing immediately if they are unwell, are more important than ever. Winter Wonderland at the Links
Links Country Park Hotel and Mackenzie Hotels have been working tirelessly to bring a one-time Winter Wonderland restaurant experience this December for all ages to enjoy.
Welcoming you, your family and friends from 2nd December 2020, Directors Liz and Marc Mackenzie decided in October that they needed to try and make the very best of the festive period, even though they didn’t know if they would be allowed to be open they decided to bring a little festive magic to their hotel in the form of a Winter Wonderland Dining
experience appealing to everyone but especially the children...
“It’s been very depressing for everyone,” said Liz Mackenzie, “and I thought let’s just make
something, if we can, that makes everyone, just for a few hours, feel the magic of Christmas and forget COVID. We all have a child in us somewhere!
We started work early October, not really sure what we could create but hoping we could welcome groups of six friends and family
throughout December. It's taken a good few hours to create but has kept the few working on it busy and positive for the future. Unfortunately then lockdown happened and we still have no idea what restrictions would be in place but we are positive that we will be able to welcome family and friends, within the current covid regulations from 2nd December 2020. We are waiting to find out exact details of what these will be”

a cat is rehomed with an ongoing problem which the new family will be aware of and for which help will be given by the branch if needed.
North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Benji and Buddy mentioned last time, together with Mollie and Dilys (the kitten featured in last month’s article), have all now been re-homed. Penfold, Percy and Dave, who are all 10 years plus are still waiting to be chosen. Jaxom and Sal, our dear little three- legged girl, are also still available at the time of writing this. Kittens, also in care, but not old enough to leave for their new homes, are already reserved. It has been a busy time. However, as per usual, we will not be re-homing over the Christmas period.
Lesley who has been helping us out during Covid by taking in cats at her cattery in Hemsby has now become a fosterer for the branch on a permanent basis. As a consequence, we have added Caister Veterinary Practice to the list of vets we use for treatment of Cats Protection cats, and also for neutering. As Lesley has the lad with polyps in her care, he will be going to Caister for his operation.
When a cat comes into care the person handing it over completes and signs an “Acceptance Form which gives personal details so that we can contact them should the need arise. It also indicates whether they are handing it over as it belonged to them, they have the owner’s permission to hand it over or that it is coming in to care because it is a stray. The form will show why the cat is being handed over and as many details as possible about the cat, ie name, age, sex, if it has been neutered, sociability to people and other animals etc By signing the form the person concerned is transferring ownership to Cats Protection unconditionally and allows us to contact their vets, if known, for their medical records.
Being able to contact their previous vets proved very useful recently when one cat came into care which had a really bad ear infection. On contacting the vets, we discovered that he had been re-homed by another charity that was aware he had polyps in his ears requiring treatment. Unfortunately, nothing had been done about this before he was re-homed, and no treatment given by his new owner. He has now been seen by our vets and will shortly be having a very intricate and difficult operation to remove the polyps. This poor little cat will hopefully soon be feeling much better and no longer in pain. When we re-home a cat you can rest assured that it has usually received any treatment needed and given a clean bill of health by its vets. There are odd occasions when
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham
We wish all our friends and fellow cat lovers a Happy Christmas and look forward to better times in the New Year. Keep safe and well.

This year has been extra busy, at the moment there are 50 hogs in care. In the last 2 weeks there has been a dog attack victim and a road casualty but the majority coming in are autumn juveniles who do not weigh enough to survive hibernation, like the one pictured. Depending on Covid restrictions we should be at North Walsham Garden Centre on Norwich Rd, 12th & 13th December between 10 to 3. Come & visit our stall and buy a stocking filler to help feed a hog.

In No. 285 two of Black’s K flights are already provided with mates, and the key-move deals with the third flight rather prettily. Game-players, who might otherwise dismiss these problems as trivial wins for White, could imagine that they have given Black odds of having to mate in (say) 40 moves, and they now have to play White’s 39th! But in 99.9% cases, the idea is to show some beautiful idea (theme), though a nice key is always a bonus. Difficulty 2.

Selling a property - Title Problems and how to fix them by Nic Sheldrake, Director, Hayes + Storr
The easing of lockdown restrictions, a buoyant property market and the temporary savings on stamp duty mean that now could be a great time to make a move. In this article, I will look at some common title problems, which left unaddressed, could delay your sale.
Land Registry - As your solicitors, will we obtain an Official Copy of your property title from the Land Registry. Initially, we will check to see whether it reveals anything which could become a problem and if so, help deal with it.
Unregistered land - Your deeds would need to be located and checked for any potential matters which may delay a transaction. Instead of checking the Official Copy, we will need to examine the title deeds at the start of the transaction and advise on any potential issues.
Lost deeds - If the deeds are lost and all efforts to find them have failed, we will try to reconstruct your title by gathering as much evidence of ownership as possible, by way of statements from the owner and/or the party who last held the deeds and apply to the Land Registry for registration.
T TO O SL SLOW OW THE SP SPREAD READ OF C CORONAVIRUS NORFOLK OLK ORONAV ORONA VIRUS IN NORF
Restrictive covenants - A restrictive covenant is a type of restriction, which could affect your land, for the benefit of neighbouring land. Little can be done to alter or remove a restrictive covenant but for your buyer, it is best to know if any exist at an early stage.
DON’T DON’ T MEET FRIENDS OR FAMIL AMILY Y INDOORS FAMILY
Rights of way and other easements - Your buyer will want to know about any rights your property is subject to and make sure it has sufficient rights for its intended use. Sometimes problems arise with shared driveways and services where one property may include the drive, pipes, or wires etc, but the other property has no legal right to use them. Identifying and resolving these issues at an early stage will avoid delays later in the transaction when everybody is keen to complete.

Hopefully, your property will have no title defects but if it does, very few problems are insurmountable, and we will help find solutions to keep your sale on track.

Classic Sticky Toffee Pudding
Hello and a very happy Christmas from all of us here at the Grove!
We managed to survive Lockdown 2.0 and we are very busy as we approach the festive period. Of course it’s a bit different this year but we are still offering lovely Two Rosette dining, afternoon tea and beautiful rooms to grab a quick night away.
We all need a bit of old fashioned comfort food now and again and you can’t go wrong with a classic sticky toffee pudding, not too difficult to create and perfect for the season of self-indulgence!
We look forward to seeing you all at some point this year or in 2021. Best wishes and happy Christmas!
Ingredients
The pudding 200g dates, stoned and chopped 250ml black tea (not too strong) ½ tsp. bicarbonate of soda 85g soft, unsalted butter 175g self-raising flour 1 tsp. mixed spice 175g soft demerara sugar 2 eggs (beaten) 1 orange (zested) 150g chopped walnuts
140ml double cream
Method Heat the oven to 180c Boil the dates and tea in a saucepan to soften the dates, stir in bicarbonate of soda and set aside Beat together the sugar and butter until pale and creamy, and then fold in the egg, flour, mixed, orange zest and chopped walnuts. Add the dates and tea Mix and pour into a buttered tin and bake for 30-35 mins until the top is firm to the touch. For the sauce: melt the butter on a low heat, add the sugar and boil until well the sugar is dissolved, then lastly add the cream.
Christmas Family Traditions
I love the tradition of passing recipes down through the family, and this is probably one of my all-time favourites handed on to me by my Mum, that evokes all my happiest childhood Christmas foodie memories. We have been baking these chocolate chip cookies for Christmas in our family for about 50 years. We try not to have them at all the rest of the year, so it is a real Festive treat for all the family that we look forward to. These cookies are in the American tradition (as we were living in America when they were conceived) and so are soft and chewy…and very moreish! They are super quick to run up, and freeze beautifully if you want to save half of them for another occasion, or cook them ahead of Christmas. They are a great alternative to mince pies, for those of us who don’t like the more traditional Christmas fayre, and a huge hit with kids both young and old. We eat them Christmas Eve with hot chocolate, and Christmas Day whilst ripping open the presents around the tree…pure festive magic! Carolyn Burn
The sauce 100g dark muscavado sugar 100g unsalted butter
Mum’s Chocolate Chip Christmas Cookies
Ingredients
Makes about 60 8 oz soft butter (I use Clover) 5 ½ oz Demerara sugar 5 ½ oz granulated sugar 2 tsp vanilla paste (I use Taylor and Colledge) 2 eggs 14 oz plain flour 1 tsp bicarb of soda ½ tsp salt 300g (3 packs) dark choc chips (I use Dr Oetker 70% cocoa)
Method
Cream butter, sugars, vanilla and eggs until pale and fluffy. Combine flour, bicarb and salt, and add to the wet mixture, mixing thoroughly. Drop tsps of mixture spaced well apart onto ungreased flat baking trays and bake in preheated oven on 180° for 10 mins until golden. Transfer carefully (they will be soft) onto wire racks to cool. Can be cooked and frozen ahead of time.

Merry Christmas From Toll Barn Vets!
Christmas is fun for all the family and that definitely includes all our pets! However, Christmas is often a busy time for our 24/7 on-site emergency service as there are plenty of hidden dangers lurking during the festivities which we should all be aware of to help keep our pets safe.
Christmas Cake, Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls all contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. These should never be fed to pets as they can cause kidney damage and in severe cases kidney failure. They can also contain alcohol which can cause signs of intoxication as well as dangerous drops in blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body temperature. Not all dogs will be affected but there is no way of knowing which animals will suffer from toxicity so they are best completely avoided. Macadamia nuts can also be toxic causing neurological signs such as weakness, depression, tremors and vomiting within 12 hours of being eaten. Onions and garlic can also be harmful (even when cooked) with signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia). Many Chhrristmas dinners include sage and onion stuffing or onion based gravy so it is best to avoid giving these “left overs to pets.
Chocolate decorations are frequently used on trees and in stockings. Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine (similar to caffeine) which is toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels).
Depending on the amount and type of chocolate eaten signs range from vomiting and diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias). If your pet eats chocolate it is important to be able to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate has been eaten as this will help us calculate whether a toxic dose has been reached. Some foods such as sugar free gum and diabetic biscuits contain xylitol. Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar which is often used as a sweetener in low carbohydrate and diabetic products. When pets eat xylitol their blood sugar level can drop rapidly causing lethargy and weakness and in severe cases, seizures. Xylitol can also cause liver failure in some dogs. The signs of this can take several days to develop. We would advise urgent veterinary attention for any pet who is suspected to have eaten products containing xylitol.
Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell. This means they will often hunt out bones, foil or string with meat juices fr from the rubbish bin or counter tops. These bones are often brittle and splinter easily which can cause blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine whilst foil or string can cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine.
Many of these (and other) foods also contain high levels of fat. This can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and more seriously increases the risk of pancreatitis.
There are also several household dangers which are more common at Christmas. Tinsel and tree ornaments are parrtticularly attractive play things to cats and puppies. If eaten these will often cause blockages and twists within the intestines of your pet requiring immediate surgery to remove the material. Christmas ornaments will also often break if played with by pets. This can cause choking, cuts within
the mouth and damage to the intestines if eaten. Christmas trees themselves are also potentially toxic with pine needles causing irritation of the mouth (which may show as excessive drooling), vomiting, diarrhoea and weakknness. Naughty puppies and kittens have also been known to injure themselves climbing Christmas trees or knocking them over so it is always advisable to have a barrier to prevent access to the tree, as well as supervision!
Candles and fairy lights are always appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns. Make sure electric lights and candles are always placed out of reach of naughty paws! Heated oils create pleasant aromas around the house but can cause burns to the tongue and mouth if licked so make sure they are placed away from inquisitive animals.
Festive bouquets often include Lilies but ingestion of the plant or plant pollen can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat comes into contact with Lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t-shirrtt on the cat to prevent them licking and ingesting more pollen and contact your vet for advice. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression. Mistletoe has been kknnown to cause collapse, changes in hearrtt rate and erratic behaviour following ingestion. Poinsettia sap has irritant properrtties which can cause blistering of the mouth and stomach when eaten. We would recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets!
Most of these potential dangers are treatable if caught early enough so if you have any concerns about your pet during this festive period our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Chhrristmas and New Year on our normal surgery phone number (01692 407126).
We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas!

My Birding Life
A new book from Moss Taylor
A passion or an obsession? This book clearly shows the ups and downs of birding from excellent and enjoyable adventures to disastrous cruising, leaving the reader wondering what will happen next. Although not born in Norfolk, Moss considers the county as his adoptive home, and his love of Norfolk shows throughout the book especially the last chapter entitled ‘Weybourne Camp – my spiritual home’.
All profits from the sale of the book will be going to the charity Love for Leo, set up by the author and his partner Robina Churchyard, which helps to finance equipment and treatment that is not available under the National Health Service, for Norfolk and Suffolk children with cerebral palsy.
The chapters are not always in chronological order but cover his different interests, such as ringing birds, travelling abroad, writing newspaper columns and publishing books. Each chapter stands alone and so it is easy to turn to the next one for a different subject. Throughout the book the text is accompanied by photos, the majority taken by the author, which add to the enjoyment. Moss takes us on a journey, which saw him turn his hobby into a profession, helped by his love of writing.
New book by local author Mike Harmer Enthusiasts of local history and gossip will be pleased to hear that North Walsham reclamation man, Mike Harmer, has recently published his second volume of memoirs. Entitled The Romany Chal: More Tales From A North Norfolk Romany Life, this is the follow-up to last year’s book, Kaka Rokker Romany. Both books are a true delight to anyone who treasures the soul of old Norfolk. Mike, who is as much a character as any who figure in his books, has spent his life mixing with all sorts from the landed gentry to the great unwashed as he has gone about his daily business of buying and selling. The son of a Romany mother and Gorgio father, Mike was born during the war in a railway carriage in Spa Common and has a memory like a sponge. Paying special attention to his Romany roots, Mike’s books conjure up a time gone by when people’s foibles and misdemeanours were the stuff of local legend and enjoyed by all. Both books are available at the Showcase Gallery, 40A Market Place, North Walsham or through Mike’s website: www.mikeharmerofnorfolk.co.uk
It is obvious that Moss willingly shares his time and knowledge with those who need help with bird identification and calls, especially young people, in the hope that they too will find the same pleasure in birdwatching. This book gives an extremely good insight into Moss's passion for birds starting with his early years and finishing in 2020, leaving us wanting more. My Birding Life has 192 pages and includes 138 colour photos. It retails at

North Norfolk Photographic Society
Zoom continues to keep North Norfolk Photographic Society going! On 4th November a competition was held that was intended to be printed pictures but was adapted to digital images to suit the medium.
The judge, Andy Swain, was spared having to travel up from his home in Norwich and had 71 photographs to assess.
Commuter
There were two members awarded ‘Gold’ and these were Judith Wells’ with ‘Pas de Deux’ and Paul Richards with ‘Pied Wagtail catching Flies’ which were both photos of birds – Judith’s being two terns striking a balletic pose.
Kestral with begging fledgling chick
Andy Swain gave two ‘Silver’ awards – both to Mick Walker for ‘Commuter’ which is a striking picture of a cyclist travelling through a dramatic architectural scene, reflected in water and ‘Golden Jackals’ – two Golden Jackals!
Mate Calling Bee-Eater
‘Bronze’ awards went to Diana Knight for ‘Otters Fishing in the Rain’ and ‘Kestrel with begging fledgling chick’ and to Frederic Landes with ‘Mate Calling (Bee Eater)’.

The Gallant Gardener
“It is the season for planting sweet peas
For as long as I can remember at this time of the year, I have planted my first sowing of sweet peas. Sweet peas are a universal plant and can be trained up hazel rods or canes, they can be allowed to run through higher plants and in fact the seed companies have now got short sweet peas and plants for hanging baskets. Therefore, sweet peas can be grown in any number of situations and will provide vivid colours, scent and cut flowers.
To plant sweet pea seed, the ideal containers are root trainers that will encourage long strong roots. If you haven’t got them then kitchen or toilet roll inners or indeed small pots. Fill the containers with multi-purpose compost and then sow one seed in each and water. In the past gardeners have suggested soaking the seed or nicking the seed coat with a knife. I have not been an advocate of these methods and having put the planted seed in a cold greenhouse, cold frame or windowsill, the seeds will normally germinate in a fortnight.
One thing you must be mindful of and that is to protect the seeds and young plants from mice, they love the seeds and will attack them. I usually lift the seed containers up in the greenhouse or indeed cover them with very small mesh wire netting. Once the plants have become established, put them outside in a cold frame or sheltered position where they will continue to grow. If there is a frost or prolonged period of cold temperatures, cover the frame with old carpet or cardboard.
Sweet peas are very hungry plants and need a good rich moist soil, in a warm south facing area. In April if you have planted the sweet peas in cardboard tubes you will be able to plant directly into the ground and there will be the minimum of disturbance of the roots. I will usually put two plants at the bottom of one cane. It is also helpful and will encourage more
growth if you nip out the growing tip when it is 10cms or 4 tall.
Further sowings can be made in January / February and again in March / April, this will ensure that you will have flowers all through the summer. You can sow directly into the ground outside in April /May.
When you choose your sweet peas, Spencer sweet peas are one of the best for cut flowers and the older fashioned varieties have a very strong scent. The seed packet will give you all the details. Perennial sweet peas are also extremely popular and will provide a good form of colour for the garden. They come in various colours and will come up each year, but they do lack scent. Again, these are hungry plants and a good feed of blood, fish and bonemeal each year in the spring will encourage strong growth. Chris Wright
MonaLisa Touch Laser Therapy is available at the Coltishall Clinic
MonaLisa Touch offers a new method, with a unique concept, to restore the women’s health and it represents a truly decisive solution for:

Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) Dyspareunia Pain Itching Mild Mixed Urinary Incontinence Low oestrogen symptoms after childbirth
MonaLisa Touch is the only laser therapy fully recognized by International Scientific Community and supported by Clinical Publications. This is a painless laser therapy that uses lasers to reshape and regenerate women’s tissue that may have started to degenerate.
How it works MonaLisa Touch works by applying a gentle laser therapy to your intimate areas. This stimulates the production of new collagen, rehydrating and tightening the membrane lining. Your consultant will administer treatment in tiny dots, meaning only a tiny area is affected at a time.

What Happens The laser gently acts through a special scanner, creating indistinguishable micro-treated areas that are required for triggering the production of new collagen, which is the main protein found in structural tissue. The laser’s action safely and painlessly reactivates the proper function of the intimate areas, while also improving the symptoms associated with mild urinary incontinence. A tissue regeneration process lasting several weeks is triggered. Stimulation occurs immediately and improvements can be seen after the first treatment. This minimally invasive, painless procedure is usually completed in five minutes.
Afterwards No recovery time is needed. You’ll be able to leave the clinic immediately afterwards and carry on with your normal daily activities. A “virtual” show initially aimed to give 5000 Norfolk children the dose of panto fun they looked like missing out on this year due to Covid-19 show cancellations and postponements. But news of project spread around the schools jungle telegraph, and saw schools sign up from all over the UK – including Scotland, Northern Ireland, Leeds, Southampton and Chelsea – seeing the total spiral beyond 80,000, with hopes of reaching 100,000.It will be videoed and streamed on December 16 from St George’s Theatre, where the live shows are also happening on December 15, 17, 18 and 19, before switching to Sheringham on December 22, 23 and 24.
The Music Hub aims to give children the chance to experience live music making – in this case singing, and seeing a live four-piece band. Its area manager Krista Ribbons said: “The uptake from across the country has been amazing. Young people have had a tough year, and were in danger of missing out on Christmas treats – so they were really keen to get involved in this bit of festive fun. There’s nothing else like it in the country!”
Schools are using online resources to learn seven singalong songs through instructional videos and downloadable lyric sheets. Tutors Tom Appleton and Ellie Bowers-Jolley from the Come and Sing Company also give tips on how to perform and the history and traditions of panto – all interspersed with panto humour. On show day children are being encouraged to dress up as their favourite panto characters and share pictures on social media. For those schools where rules don’t allow singing, there is the option of learning to “sign” the songs, providing youngsters with an added skill too. Debbie Thompson director of both theatres said; “We are thrilled this panto project has taken off so well. It just shows the hunger there is out there for live pantomime – which is a great time for us to engage with children. It is

The Chrissimus Tree
Norfolk Coast Partnership Small Grant Fund
It mesermerises my great big, green eyeses, When I stares at a Chrissimus tree. All the sparkelly lights with the baubells all brights Are ‘mazing to Elfies like me. This Weld is so frightening with thunder and lightening And plagues and wars that destroy. Most days are all greysome with only bad news, We needs bright, glad tidings of joy. All year Mr Chrissimus makes gifts for the children, To make sure there’s a whole load of toysis. So he goes to the shopses and markets for goodies, And makes tings for girlsis and boysis. He can glue, paint and screw tings and make ‘em like new tings, It takes the whole year to get done. He’s kind and big hearted and can’t wait to get started, So all childs can join in the fun.
Small changes can make a big difference and we would like to support your projects through our recently launched small grant fund. The cash, from sales of posters, greetings cards, cycle maps and a book of poetry and pictures from local people, is already being ploughed back into taking care of the area of outstanding natural beauty through the fund. Grants of between £500-£3,000 are now available for local, community projects which bring environmental, economic, social or educational benefits to the Norfolk Coast and its communities. Projects encouraging people of differing ethnicities, age groups and accessibility needs to experience and enjoy the area are particularly welcomed. The funding has already enabled installation of a boardwalk at Natural Surroundings in Bayfield, nr Holt, which improves the site for visitors by re-instating all weather access to the River Glaven and the riverbank hide and making the path through the wet woodland a lot easier and safer to use. We are grateful to all those who have purchased our products, and the shops and outlets that have stocked them. The profits are all being spent on restoring and protecting the coast we look after and now we’ve built up sufficient funds, we’re keen to hear ideas for how the money can be spent. Do get in touch with us if you think of a project you could take forward. For further information or to discuss project ideas please contact the fund facilitator Helen Timson, helen.timson@norfolk.gov.uk or telephone: 01328 850541. Examples of suitable projects might be schools looking to enhance their outdoor learning area for wildlife, sensory needs or vegetable growing; care homes wishing to incorporate wildlife areas into their grounds for residents to enjoy; parish biodiversity projects or schemes facilitating non-motorised transport for visitors/locals. Our merchandise range includes ‘Walk with me’, a book of community photographers and poems, a poster and card featuring a specially commissioned Robert Gillmor linocut and the Norfolk Coast Cycleway leaflet which offers a route close to the Norfolk coast exploring its beautiful villages and quieter lanes. These items are for sale in local shops around the area and from our online shop at www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk/shop

North Norfolk Family Solicitors support ‘Good Divorce Week 2020’
Family Solicitors at North Norfolk based law firm Clapham & Collinge LLP are supporting Resolution’s ‘Good Divorce Week 2020’, a national campaign that aims to promote practical and constructive ways for separating parents to put the needs of their children first.
Organised by Resolution, a community of more than 6,500 family justice professionals, this year the campaign focuses around the benefits of early legal advice, as it prepares to re-launch its Code of Practice.
Resolution members believe the process of separating, sorting out finances and arranging childcare should be done in a way that minimises conflict and keeps the best interests of any children involved at the heart of proceedings. There is no silver bullet approach to divorce, as every family is different. However, by seeking early professional advice, couples have the benefit of considering a range of options and making a decision that is most suitable to them.
Neale Grearson, who is a Partner and Head of Family Law Department at Clapham & Collinge LLP, is a qualified Collaborative Lawyer and member of the Norfolk Good Divorce Group. This is made up of family lawyers from firms throughout the county
who are committed to helping clients achieve a divorce or separation in a non-confrontational way, without going to court.
What is a "good divorce"? The term "good divorce" is an interesting phrase and in some ways is contradictory. A natural pre-cursor to divorce is a relationship breakdown. Relationship breakdowns can be difficult for parties at a time when emotions are often running high. This can increase tensions especially when faced with a legal mechanism which is currently heavily reliant upon fault. The so called "blame game" can have a huge impact on the couples future relationship.
Change is a natural part of life but when it happens within the family unit it can be difficult to deal with. Not only can it be difficult for the couple themselves but it can affect children and also the wider family. Many children may not want their parents to separate, they may feel confused and uncertain about what the future holds or sometimes they may have mixed feelings if they know that their parents were not happy in the relationship.
The idea of a "good divorce" is to try and reduce conflict between the parties and the impact that this has on children and the wider

family. The ultimate goal is for parties to come out the other side of the relationship breakdown amicably, with respect for each other, putting their children's needs first and limiting the overall impact of the breakdown on their children and the wider family.
Clapham & Collinge’s family law advice is bespoke, confidential and totally designed around you, helping you come to the best conclusion for both you and your family. Neale, together with Associate Solicitor Caroline Eaton are members of Resolution and fully support and uphold Resolution’s Code of Practice in the work they do.

Friends of Holt Hall Save Holt Hall Campaign For 70 years, Holt Hall has provided cohort upon cohort of young people with the inspiration to learn about the natural world and themselves. It is a centre of excellence, and a feather in the cap for our county. It stands alongside the best outdoor learning centres in the country and has an outstanding reputation for opportunities to learn about the natural world, practical sustainability in our future lifestyles, and helping the personal development, wellbeing and mental health of our youngsters.
Our Norfolk County Council Administration at County Hall seems to want to end this leadership in learning and leave it to “the market” to provide when we all move forward from the present Coronavirus crisis. Whilst schools have been seeking to book day visits as they are able to do, and which have been provided by similar council run centres elsewhere in the country, Norfolk has found itself unable to give this clearance. This is despite the preparations and readiness of the
team and the exceptional track record at Holt Hall for sensitive and skilled staff with excellent procedures for safeguarding, health and safety wellmanaged learning, sleeping and dining spaces.
The Norfolk Administration no doubt looks at Friends of Holt Hall and our volunteers and says to itself, “They are few: what about the many, the taxpayers and others?”
In the past 2-3 weeks, over 4175 people have signed our appeal to the Council to change its mind about imminent closure and explore ways of keeping Holt Hall open, adding value in its excellent way to our children. Support comes from all over Norfolk and more widely. Such is its reputation, and it should be a source of pride for Norfolk.
FOHH is convinced there are many ways to strengthen the operating model for Holt Hall and move it to a more sustainable financial footing, a flagship for sustainability and the natural world in our beautiful county and at

minimal cost to the public.
Support for our petition suggests those in the Norfolk County Council Administration who support closing Holt Hall may prove to be the few: the supporters for this wonderful service may be in fact the many! Perhaps our County Councillors would like to declare “Close” or “Save”?
We invite the media to promote the growing demonstration of the huge public interest in Saving Holt Hall. We hope this will persuade Councillors that it is important to think again, and to work with Holt Hall and its supporters to find a positive and sustainable future to keep delivering great benefits to the public.

Sheringham Shoal and Dudgeon Extension Projects Consultation Summary published
Equinor is bringing forward proposals to extend the existing Sheringham Shoal and Dudgeon offshore wind farms, located off the coast of North Norfolk, and has published the summary report from its first phase of community consultations.
The proposed Sheringham Shoal Extension and Dudgeon Extension wind farms would be built adjacent to the existing wind farms, bringing the total capacity up to 1.44GW, enough renewable energy to power one and a half million UK homes.
As part of the development process, early-stage proposals were presented locally and online for feedback from the community and key stakeholders.
The phase one community consultation ran from 9 July until 20 August 2020; due to COVID-19, it included hosting a virtual exhibition to display all the project information and this was supported by:
• advertisements in local newsletters • posters displayed in local information points • the distribution of a community consultation leaflet to over 11,000 Norfolk households and businesses • virtual engagement with parish, district and county councillors across the consultation area
There were over 1,700 visits to the virtual exhibition, which can still be visited at event.sepanddep.co.uk, and almost 300 pieces of feedback were received during the consultation period.
“We are very grateful to everyone who took the time to visit our virtual exhibition and provide comments. Engaging early with communities local to our two projects has been valuable for capturing feedback to inform the next phase.
“All of the feedback has been thoroughly reviewed and is being considered as we refine our proposals. Responses to all feedback received throughout the development process will be provided in our final Consultation Report when we submit our DCO application,”
says Kari-Hege Mørk, Equinor’s Project Manager for the Sheringham and Dudgeon Extension Projects.
Most people said they were supportive of the proposals, and a large amount of valuable information was provided on key topics for the project team to consider when developing the proposals. These included the management of the traffic, access, and noise and vibration considerations during the construction of the onshore infrastructure. Ecology and nature conservation, visual impacts both onshore and offshore and consideration of the cumulative effects of other infrastructure developments in Norfolk were also highlighted as areas of particular importance to the local community.
A high-level overview of all the feedback received during the first consultation is presented in the summary report available now.
A more detailed report, along with on-going surveys and technical investigations will be shared in the Preliminary Environmental Information Report (PEIR) for phase two of the community consultation.
more renewable energy for the UK, contributing to decarbonisation, while creating local jobs and opportunities.”
As both Sheringham Shoal Extension and Dudgeon Extension are classed as Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs), Equinor will apply for a Development Consent Order from the Secretary of State for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Equinor is seeking to minimise potential impacts on the community and the environment by adopting a shared onshore footprint for the two projects and applying for one common Development Consent Order.
Equinor intends to submit the joint Development Consent Order application by the end of 2021.
This second phase of community consultation will be held in Spring 2021 when the company will be presenting its refined plans, inviting comments to its PEIR and providing additional information including visualisations of what the projects will look like onshore and from the coast.
The Sheringham and Dudgeon Extension Projects Phase One Consultation Summary Report is available to be viewed and downloaded at: https://sepanddep.commonplace.is/
Alternative methods of receiving documents can also be arranged at no extra cost for those without computer or internet access.
Mørk continued “An overwhelming majority of respondents, 89%, agreed that that the UK needs to generate more energy from renewable sources, including offshore wind generation. Both projects can play an important role in delivering

Plan to avoid penalty charges By Derek Baldry, Director Regional Accounting Services Limited
We are fast approaching the online filing deadline for the 2020 tax year, in 3 months Self-Assessments for all self-employed and partnerships are due to be with HMRC. The last filing date is the 31st January 2021, HRMC do not allow a grace period beyond this date, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Failing to file on time will incur an immediate penalty of £100, the penalties can increase up to £1600. There may be additional penalties and interest for late payment of the tax due.
This time of year, accountants are generally very busy dealing with their existing client’s needs, therefore taking on additional clients, it may not be possible to guarantee filing on time. This year the situation maybe exacerbated due to the Covid 19 and the issues surrounding the management of the virus.

Always pleasant and helpful, he keeps not only food and newspapers but also all those little household bits which you forgot when you were at the supermarket, cards, sticky tape, handwash - you name it. More people should know about him. Although I don't want to be crowded out! Best regards, Rose King

No Increase in Town Council Precept for Coming Year
Last week, Cromer Town Council members agreed their budget for 2021-2022 and decided that there would be no increase in the precept to be paid by residents. Councillors are aware of the pressures that have been placed on householders following the disruption to their lives this year and were determined to reduce any additional financial burden.
Julie Chance, the Town Clerk and one of the driving forces behind Cromer Cares, remarked: “We have witnessed at first hand; the upheaval and hardship being experienced as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. The elderly and vulnerable, in particular, remain at risk of being isolated.”
Town councillors and staff have had to adapt to the changing circumstances this year by holding meetings via Zoom and staff have worked at home. Prudent financial management and successful applications for grants have helped to off-set the loss of income stemming from the cancellation of wedding ceremonies at North Lodge and key events in the calendar such as the New Year Firework Display.
The Town Council has, drawn up a busy schedule for the coming year and this will include being involved in the re-positioning of Cromer Cares, the development of the Artspace initiative, introducing aspects of our ambitious environmental policy, supporting the plans for a woodland burial site in Cromer and establishing a CCTV network in the town.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club News from the Club House ...
Due to the COVID restrictions members will be unable to meet on Friday evenings, 7-10pm, at the club bar or the short mat bowls sessions on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon until the new year, hopefully.
The Norfolk County Bowls league, Federation league and NANSA league committees are trying their best to plan for next season but circumstances are making it impossible to do so at present.
Willimotts have carried out the end of season remedial works on the green. We have since then continued to ‘switch’ and cut and will be doing so, weather permitting, throughout the winter. The green team treated it with iron sulphate to combat any moss. On 11th November Willimotts started their winter maintenance schedule of spiking to a depth of 100mm and applying granular Autumn fertiliser. The next visit will then be in February.

It is with great sadness that we have to report that Russell Webdale recently passed away peacefully at home. Russell was a keen sportsman throughout his life and only took up outdoor bowls a few years ago. A very sociable person, Russell never appeared to dwell on his health issues, and he was an enthusiastic bowler, especially when bowling well and winning whilst enjoying a joke or two with others on the rink. A lovely man, he will be missed. We send our condolences to his family.
We know some local bowls players have not had the opportunity to play this year, so we encourage you to put ‘Contact Cromer Marrams’ in your diary for March next year. All being well we will be open for play as soon as the weather permits in April 2021, only 5 months away! You will be most welcome to join us. Our membership subscription will remain at only £65 and we are open 10am to 8pm every day from April to September!
Wishing everyone a peaceful and safe Christmas.

Norfolk Coalition established to support children and young people’s wellbeing
Sir Norman Lamb, the former Member of Parliament for North Norfolk, and Norfolk Community Foundation have established a coalition of Norfolk-based voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations working with children and young people to help strengthen their existing services and encourage and promote innovation to enrich children and young people’s lives in the county.
Sir Norman and the Foundation had previously convened a youth mental health summit in June bringing together local community organisations and Norfolk’s Chief Constable, Simon Bailey, to look at the psychological impact of Covid-19 and lockdown on children, teenagers and young people. This followed data produced by Kooth, an online counselling service commissioned earlier this year by the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust for 11 to 25-year-olds, which had shown in the East of England during the first lockdown a marked rise in concerns about domestic abuse, child abuse, eating issues and struggles with body image, and the greatest increase nationally in sadness, anxiety about returning to school or college and young people with autism or Asperger’s seeking support.
The Coalition held its virtual launch event on Monday 30th November, bringing together
nearly 40 organisations which it aims to support by providing access to shared resources and opportunities, including for unique funding and training, sharing good practice, raising the profile of the work groups do and linking up with larger countywide and national networks. Sir Norman and the Foundation had worked with local charities ahead of the Coalition being established to identify what they needed to develop and grow their services, which helped to shape the offer of support being provided.
Alongside launching the Coalition on Monday, Sir Norman and the Foundation opened up for members of the Coalition grant applications to access funding from their Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund to help strengthen and enhance existing open access youth work drop-ins as well as youth groups who provide specialist youth work opportunities, such as for young people with disabilities, autism and those from a BAME background.
Sir Norman said: “This Coalition is a chance for Norfolk to be an exemplar, demonstrating to the rest of the country how we can be innovative in providing better community support, working together to share best practice and strengthen the existing provision, which is all needed now, more than ever, in the
