Cromer in Bloom Hit the Buffers

Cromer in Bloom have taken on another forlorn and neglected area to tidy up. In front of Cromer Station, outside the old Buffers pub.

We felt that it was a poor welcome for visitors arriving by train into Cromer with trees covered in brambles and a grass bed full of weeds and rubbish. It has taken us several gardening sessions to improve the area and we will be planting a new garden in the next few weeks. Many locals and visitors passing by have commented on what an improvement it is already.

Many of the gardens Cromer in Bloom look after in Cromer started out like this, and now look considerably better.

North Norfolk Photographic Society were pleased to welcome Jim Hartje as our judge for the final digital competition of the season.

Jim is a long-standing judge from Peterborough who, for various reasons, judged the images on Zoom instead of attending in person. There was a high standard of images, particularly wildlife and Jim held back 12 images for awards out of the 66 entries. As this was an open competition, and not on a theme, there was a

To reach their target care home staff have decided to walk from Overstrand to Holt. They will pass through Cromer, East Runton, West Runton, Sheringham and High Kelling to reach Holt. During their walk staff are hoping for generous donations from the public to help beat this killer disease. Following the success of last year’s inaugural “North Norfolk Open Studios” we will again be holding exhibitions of local artists’ work with the opportunity to meet over 130 artists in their studios and to purchase original works without gallery commission fees.

This year the event will run from Saturday 28th May through to Sunday 5th June, covering half term holidays and Jubilee Celebration Bank Holidays. Most studios will be open from 10am to 4pm daily but please check the website to confirm individual studio arrangements before travelling: northnorfolkstudios.co.uk Leaflets and maps available locally and online.

A local trail has been set up including artists from the Holt, High Kelling, Hunworth and Briston area with three artists new to NNOS this year alongside five who have exhibited before:

Inspired by the beauty of Norfolk, Terrie Clifft [1 Castle Close, Holt, NR25 6FB] enjoys creating unique decorative and functional fused art glass. Her original handmade kiln-fired glass items range from seascapes and landscapes, to penguins, robins and pheasants… not forgetting beautiful Murano glass pendants!

Her husband Ian Clifft [1 Castle Close, Holt, NR25 6FB] is an experienced and talented woodworker who produces a range of freestanding and wall-hung clocks made from reclaimed solid oak with inserts of other timbers or stone. Ian also makes attractive and sturdy lamp bases from oak which are fully fitted with brass bulb and shade holders, a long flex and a plug – ready to ‘plug and play’!

Chris White [The Bungalow, Old Cromer Road, High Kelling NR25 6AJ] is an established local artisan who has run glass workshops for many years. His fused and stained glass works are inspired by nature. He also produces pieces of art work suitable for enhancing your garden all year round. His work is whimsical, functional and decorative.

Tricia Arnold’s [54 Pineheath Road, High Kelling NR25 6RH] artwork is “all about colour, texture and fun!” Tricia’s paintings are mixed media and she particularly enjoys using vivid colour in vibrant acrylics and inks. Tricia will have a range of original works, prints and cards for sale.

Richard Woodfield [22Avenue Road, High Kelling NR25 6RD] is a fine art illustrator who produces incredibly detailed renditions of landscapes and buildings, both local and further afield, using fine liner pens to render the necessary tones and textures. Richard also produces works in gouache and pastels.

Lizzy Harvey [[9 Mill Road, Briston NR24 2JF] is a mixed media artist who produces abstract and semi-abstract work based on nature and the landscape. Lizzy uses inks, watercolours and pastels for her drawings, also experimenting in monoprints and textiles.

It is only 6.3 miles between the studios at Briston and High Kelling, and will provide you with a wonderful opportunity to meet, chat with and support local artists, purchase an original artwork as a gift for yourself or a friend, and to explore the beauty of wonderful North Norfolk!

Well-known local artist Emma Blount [Hunworth Village Hall, Kings Street NR24 2EQ] works both as an illustrator and with glass. She will be holding a stained glass Caroline Houchell [45 Pineheath Road, High and glass painting Kelling NR25 6RH] is both a printer and mixed-media artist. Caroline produces collages, demonstration on Friday 3rd June at monoprints and cyanotypes influenced by 11 a.m. Drawings natural elements and changing seasons, exploring The Sheringham & District of lions, prints and a sense of space. She also runs workshops on Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association was formed in 1950 and today has a Membership of 87, but regretfully we are a generation of the past, only seven of our members are under the age of 65 and staggeringly our average age is 85. Directed by Stephen Richards with ensemble and soloists Not being put off by this we hold regular social events, which attract an average of well over 30 members, plus guests who are always welcome!

The Supporters of the Sheringham Knitters have been working hard and raised £500 for Cromer RNLI.

A cheque for the amount was handed over to John Redmond, Lifeboat Operations Manager at RNLI Cromer. He thanked those concerned for all their efforts, especially Anne Poole and Kate Davis.

Retro Comedy Comes to Sheringham

A hit West End comedy from the 1980s is coming to Sheringham Little Theatre this June. Described by The Guardian as ‘the most enjoyable piece of theatre seen in months’, One O’clock from the House revolves around the increasingly hilarious events immediately following the unexpected death of the head of a dysfunctional family.

Frank Vickery’s rich dialogue, and beautifully drawn comic characters, soon weave their spell as the audience is taken on a journey featuring almond-free almond cakes, a pet shopping trolley called Rover, and a cruel posthumous joke. Audiences as far and wide as Australia have been thoroughly entertained watching this ordinary family gradually fracture, as it becomes progressively consumed by selfishness and greed!

‘One O’clock from the House’, is being presented by local amateur theatre company, Stage Direct who recently mounted the successful production of ‘Miss Marble Takes a Break’ at the same venue.

North Norfolk u3a ‘Summer Happenings’

There is no distinction between learners and teachers – everyone could take a turn at being both if they wished.

The North Norfolk ‘u3a’ is 30 years old this year and to celebrate it is holding three events to mark the occasion.

Because the North Norfolk ‘u3a’ covers a large geographical area they will be spread out over the county: Fakenham in May, Sheringham in July and Cromer in September.

If you didn’t know the ‘U3A’ started in France at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Toulouse in 1973. The UK ‘u3a’ movement is based loosely on the French model and aims to encourage groups of people in their third age to come together and continue their enjoyment of learning in subjects of interest to them.

Members of the u3a will be invited to one of the three informal gatherings which will provide the opportunity to socialise with old friends, meet with new and enjoy afternoon tea. The National ‘u3a’ organisation, the Third Age Trust, came into being forty years ago so it’s a great opportunity to celebrate the ‘u3a’ both locally and nationally.

It started with an idea to bring some cheer to the streets during lockdown, and soon there were more than 200 children playing games on Garden Street courtesy of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna who provided a high-resolution image of the

Over the months 25 quality life-sized reproductions of works from around the world appeared on the streets of Cromer. People loved it: “I love the idea of engaging the public with art in the environment. Taking it out of galleries, which some people either view as elitist or merely not for them” was typical; “I liked the fabulous quality of the reproductions, the excitement of seeing well known pictures in unexpected places, the enjoyment and interest it has clearly given people about the town.”, “This has engaged lots of people who wouldn’t normally look at art or visit a gallery”. Over 99% were really positive about the exhibition.

A huge thanks to the District and Town councils, and all the wall-holders for supporting the exhibition.

All good things must come to an end, and this outdoor exhibition will finish at the end of April. The artworks will then be displayed in a closing exhibition in Cromer Community Centre in Garden Street in the middle of May. Drawing materials will be provided at the exhibition for viewers to use and spend some time “drawing from the masters”.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

On 5 April, after an excellent lunch at the Links Hotel in West Runton, we enjoyed a talk by Stephen Scott-Fawcett on the topic of “Nepal – now and in the future”. He visited Nepal in 2005 and many times since, and his wife is Nepalese.

He began by giving us some basic facts about Nepal, e.g., it is about half the size of the UK, with a population also about half the size of ours. Geographically there are three main areas: the high Himalayas close to the northern border, then the central ‘hilly’ area (to us still mountainous!), and the fertile plains in the south. 123 languages are spoken and about half of the population speak official Nepali. 80% of the population is Hindu. Until about 1860 Nepal was a collection of many small kingdoms, which thereafter gradually merged and in 1923 Nepal became a single independent nation. Politically it has had its problems, for instance the civil war in the late 1990s and early 2000s and also there is the need for more widely available educational and employment opportunities. The population is patriarchal in many ways, although in the home it is the women who have the say! Transportation is a problem, which is not surprising given the mountainous terrain.

Natural disasters are also a threat; Nepal is prone to earthquakes (the last was in 2015) and also to mudslides during the monsoon season. Global warming has led to increased snow melt in the mountains, with a build-up of water behind dams, so if any of these should break, the consequences would be disastrous. We had a very interesting talk by Alex Wiseman from MIND, a countrywide organisation offering help, advice and information to people with mental health problems and lobbying government and local authorities on their behalf. He spoke about the stigma that still exists towards mental health and how we can help to overcome this.

Then on June 8th we will be going on a mystery tour. There are places available on the coach at the moment. The cost is £32 which includes lunch and afternoon tea on the way home. Pick-up 10.30 and drop off 5.30.

Aylsham Open Gardens Weekend 18th and 19th June 2022 Gardens in Aylsham will be open over the weekend of 18th and 19th of June. We are pleased to be able to welcome everyone back to this event after a two-year break.

During that time people have been working hard in their gardens, completing new projects to make them interesting, beautiful and inviting. We have over 12 gardens open, half of these are new to the event, so lots of new things to see.

Aylsham in Bloom which is part of the Aylsham Community Partnership charity runs the event and receives the ticket money which enables the volunteers to maintain the Bloom planting around the town. Money raised by refreshments and plant sales is donated by the gardeners to a charity they choose. This year we are hoping to be able to support, Cromer

National Coastwatch, Cromer Hospital, British Heart Foundation and Redwings Horse Sanctuary amongst others.

Tickets are £5 for one day and £8 for a two-day ticket. Those aged 16 and under are free. Children should be accompanied by an adult. Tickets will be on sale on the open days at the Heritage Centre in St Michael’s Churchyard from 9.30am. Gardens open at 11am.

Wildlife Garden Competition 2022

On Tuesday 5th April we welcomed Dr Ian Bedford (the Norfolk Bug Man!) with a fascinating look at Companion Planting. Ian explained that by creating a well-balanced garden, it could not only benefit the gardener by improving plant quality and yields, but promote biodiversity too.

Cromer Green Spaces nurtures nature in our urban coastal setting.

We believe that every green space in Cromer is important for wildlife – none more so than our own gardens.

Many artificial fertilisers and controls are not only harmful to the “good guys” such as bees and beetles but can leave residues in the soil for many years, killing off the natural “friendly” bacteria and fungi that form an essential part of the decay cycle which improves soil quality. When under attack from predators such as aphids and caterpillars it has been discovered that some plants send out chemical signals via their roots and leaves to their neighbours informing them that they are “under attack” and they in turn produce their own chemicals to deter the pests! Amazing!

This competition – successfully launched in 2021 – is looking to find the best gardens for nature in Cromer. Big or small, a whole garden or a special corner all qualify. But to provide maximum benefit to wildlife, three elements are key: water, food and shelter. For water this could be a pond, birdbath or even a simple hedgehog drinking dish. Food comes from nectar-rich flowers and plants for insects, berry-bearing bushes or just a well-stocked bird table. Shelter can be provided through the vegetation grown or purpose made – a ‘bug hotel’, or bird box.

Italian Stargazer Who Wanted a Closer Look By David Abbott

Galileo’s dad wanted to call him Fred. But his mum said he should have a cool name just in case. So, Galileo Galilei it was.

The young Galileo was obsessed with the sky. As his father would say “he was born sunny side up”. But he warned his young son: “Stop looking up all the time or you’ll get run over”.

By an early age Galileo figured there were lots of stars. Lots. And he wondered how he could get a closer look. He considered being loaded into a canon and fired up to see them. But he thought his mother might not be too happy with that.

To the stars? In those days most people didn’t go far. Down the pub and back was as near an adventure as many got. A few brave souls got into boats. Some were never seen again. “That proves,” said his father “the world is flat. They fell off the edge.” He knew his science.

In Galileo’s home town of Pisa some would gaze in puzzlement at the leaning tower. And ask why? Galileo had an idea. Having thrown all kinds of objects from the top and apparently failing to kill anyone, he discovered the speed of fall of an object was not proportional to its weight. Eat your

heart out Aristotle.

In Spring 1609 Galileo heard about an invention in the Netherlands which brought things closer. Aha, he thought. I don’t need a canon after all.

Having mastered the art of lens grinding, he built a 20x magnifying telescope. Then he set it up to look at the Moon and found wasn’t made of cheese. He went on to discover Jupiter’s moons Ganymede, Europa, lo and the rings of Saturn. Not a bad day’s work for a college dropout.

When not gazing skyward he had a terrestrial star which shone bright. He had “an arrangement” with a Venetian woman, Marina Gamba, who told him he needed to get out more. Clearly, he didn’t because they had two daughters and a son.

In those days suggesting the earth goes round the sun wasn’t exactly greeted enthusiastically by the perceived science of the day. As for rocks falling from space, oh come on! The Italian Inquisition was on hand to disabuse people of all such nonsense. The ageing Galileo got on the wrong side of them and was put under house arrest for the rest of his life. At least his mum was right: Galileo had

a better ring to it than Fred.

What can we learn from celebrities who died without making a will? by Yasmin Knock, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr Solicitors

Celebrities often have professional advisors who look after their business affairs. However, like many people, sometimes they do not get around to making a will. When you die without a will, predetermined laws of intestacy decide who should inherit your estate, and while these laws seek to deal with matters in a fair way, they do not consider modern family structures, family dynamics or personal wishes.

Prince’s lesson for philanthropists Family feuds over who should inherit are harder to settle where there is no will, as the person’s wishes remain unknown. After Prince died, intestacy rules meant that all his assets passed to his siblings, leaving his five half-siblings without a share of his estate. Had Prince made a will, he might have chosen to make gifts to his half-siblings as well. He may also have chosen to leave legacies to the various charities he gave generously to throughout his lifetime, something which cannot be achieved without a will.

Stieg Larsson’s lesson for unmarried couples Author Stieg Larsson, who famously wrote the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, died

intestate. His vast wealth passed to his father under intestacy, leaving his long-term partner with nothing. Unmarried couples are not entitled to each other’s estates, regardless of the seriousness or length of the relationship, so the only way to ensure your partner receives any of your assets is to leave them in a will.

Intestacy rules do not consider the continued management of estate assets like a business or intellectual property such as royalties from music. Amy Winehouse’s intestacy resulted in her £4 million estate being almost entirely depleted within two years of her death after her companies passed into the control of her parents. A will would have allowed her to appoint an appropriate person to manage the companies on behalf of her beneficiaries to ensure they remained viable assets.

Rik Mayall’s lesson in tax planning Intestacy is often not the best approach when it comes to tax planning. When actor Rik Mayall died intestate, his wealth was subject to a substantial inheritance tax liability that might have been reduced has he planned his affairs during his lifetime. One of the most important ways to benefit from available tax savings is with a will.

agencies who referred families to its Toys and Tins appeal at Christmas. The agencies distributed the vouchers to the families they work with. One agency, supporting young people moving into independent living, used the vouchers to teach budgeting skills through the process of buying staple foods, whilst another worked with a small group to shop and prepare meals together.

Not only did the vouchers assist struggling households with buying essentials, but they also led to The Salvation Amy connecting with people who would not normally use its services. The Salvation Army offers a range of assistance from employment and debt advice to participation in a range of well-being and social activities.

I know lots of people don’t even like to acknowledge that their pet could be carrying fleas, but it is fact – If you have a pet, you could have fleas. And the unfortunate part of the problem, as some of you are well aware, is that with the advent of central heating fleas have become a year-long feature. Signs of a heavy flea infestation on your pet include: scratching, biting, showing other signs of discomfort, scabby or irritated skin, and you may see visible signs such as adult fleas or flea dirt. However, some pets (especially cats) will groom adult fleas and flea dirt from their coats making it impossible for their owner to see evidence of a flea problem. Here’s how you can check your pet for fleas (if he/she will cooperate!):

Sit your pet on a bit of white paper and rub its coat vigorously for a few minutes. This should dislodge flea faeces (“dirt”) from the coat which will fall onto the paper. Remove your pet from the paper

Another very important fact involving the flea life-cycle is that once the larva are safe in their cocoons as pupae, there is no product available that will kill them. They can stay protected in this state for months and hatch out in less than a second when your pet is close by. This is one of the reasons year-long, consistent flea prevention is so important If you find evidence of fleas on your pet, it definitely means you should be treating them. But remember, just because you don’t see evidence doesn’t mean your pet isn’t suffering from flea bites. There are now a wide variety of products and formulations for treating and preventing fleas ranging from sprays, spot-on, tablets and injections for cats. An integrated plan consists of using products that will kill adult fleas and products that treat the environment (house, car, kennel, etc).

Garden-lovers Gear up for Creake Abbey’s Annual Plant Lovers’ Day On Saturday 28th May the region’s gardenlovers will flock to Creake Abbey, the beautiful monastic site three miles south of Burnham Market in north Norfolk, for Plant Lovers’ Day, its annual botanical bonanza.

Diana Brocklebank Scott, founder of Creake Abbey, said: “Gardening has never been such an important resource for nurturing ourselves as well as the environment. We are all becoming increasingly aware of the impact that wildlife-friendly gardens can have on biodiversity as well as on carbon capture. With the correct care and attention, our gardens should fizz with plant and insect life. Creake Abbey’s Plant Lovers’ Day is the perfect place to refresh your garden, regardless of its size, with new, interesting and healthy plants. Don’t miss out on this chance to put a spring in your step, reinvigorate your garden and help the environment too.”

As always, visitors to Creake Abbey will be offered delicious breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea by the Creake Abbey Café & Food Hall together with takeaway coffee, cake and snacks. The gate opens at 10am and closes at 4pm. Entrance to the plant fair is £5 per adult and there is no charge for under 16s. Dogs on leads welcome but must not be left in cars. Visitors may also browse the wares and

services of Creake Abbey’s seven resident independent shops and services free of charge.

Once again, proceeds from the day will go to Wells Community Hospital Trust at Wellsnext-the-Sea. Over the past 14 years Creake Abbey has raised over £28,000 for the hospital through its annual Plant Lovers’ Day and subsequent donations. The hospital has been providing health and wellbeing services in Norfolk for more than 100 years. Alongside clinics, the hospital is spearheading services for the community including a foodbank, community café, social groups as well as a program of exercise classes. Pineapple Upside Down Cake

I decided it should be something retro but appropriate for making and sharing if you are having a get together for the occasion.

I remember my mother making this cake when I was little, and what a treat it was served up with custard, or on special occasions, cream, (or in those days Dream Topping, remember that?).

With the Platinum Jubilee around the corner, I got to thinking what would be a good recipe for this month?

The recipe makes a single layer cake, but for a special occasion you could double the quantity of sponge mix and bake one layer without the pineapple, then sandwich it with your choice of jam and cream or buttercream. A feast fit for a king, or queen!

Ingredients Large tin of pineapple rings Glace cherries 4 tablespoons soft light brown sugar 235g softened butter plus extra for greasing 175g caster sugar 3 eggs, beaten ½ tsp vanilla extract 175g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tbsp whole milk

Method Preheat the oven to 180C. Thoroughly grease a deep 20cm (8 inch) round cake tin (two if doubling the mixture to make a sandwich cake).

Drain the pineapple rings and dry off on kitchen paper. Melt together the soft brown sugar and 60g of the butter in a saucepan over a gentle heat.

Spoon into the bottom of the cake tin and arrange the pineapple rings in the bottom of the tin. Place a glace cherry on the centre of each ring.

Sift the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl, add the eggs, vanilla, remaining butter and milk and mix with a hand mixer (or by hand) until smooth and well combined. Spoon the mixture over the pineapple rings carefully, level and bake in the oven for about 30 minutes or until risen and golden.

When cooked, leave in the tin to cool for a few minutes, run a knife around the edge to loosen and place a serving plate over the tin. Hold the tin and plate together firmly and turn over. Remove the cake tin and leave to cool.

NB: If making a sandwich cake, double the sponge mix ingredients, divide between two cake tins and omit the pineapple and melted sugar/butter mixture for the bottom sponge.

Running Wild!

Nettle and Pea Soup

They say the best things in life are free... which is just as well given how expensive everything else is suddenly becoming. If you’re feeling the pinch financially, one easy way to save some money is with your food shopping. I find that making a meal list for the week (I know, it’s another chore, but so worth it) saves me from falling into the temptation traps set for us by the evil geniuses behind supermarket marketing.

A little olive oil 1 large white onion, finely chopped 1 large jacket potato or a good handful of new potatoes, skin on and chopped into chunks A couple of sticks of celery, chopped 20 to 30 heads of nettle, leaves stripped from the stalk and well washed Vegetable stock Half a small pack of frozen peas, defrosted 4 to 5 sprigs fresh mint, chopped Tsp miso paste, mixed with a little warm water (optional)

Given how important feeding yourself is, and how much we enjoy it, is it really too hard to give yourself half an hour to decide just what you fancy eating for the next week? The other outrageously easy win is to eat wild food. Instead of looking at nettles like the enemy, encourage them in your garden and consider them a crop!

At the moment, you can easily pick Garlic Mustard which can be cooked or eaten raw as a salad, Wild Garlic, which can be gently wilted or again eaten raw in salad, and my favourite at the moment is Cleavers, otherwise known as Sticky Willy, a rampant weed that is incredibly good for you, and can be cooked into soup or brewed into tea.

Save money by getting creative with the wild harvest available to us, and base meals around deals on potatoes, vegetables, pasta and rice. Use more dried beans and pulses in your recipes to bulk them out, such as lentils in bolognaise or chilli and beans in soups and try to bulk buy staples such as tinned tomatoes, frozen vegetables, oatmeal and pasta.

Make your own flat breads and garlic bread with strong wholemeal or white flour, and buy sundried tomatoes and roasted peppers in oil, making use of the oil in the jars for cooking to combat the recent shortages in cooking oil.

And of course, grow your own veg and herbs if you can, to supplement what you buy; seeds are cheap to buy, and you can use old yoghurt or butter tubs and pots to grow your seeds in. When picking wild plants, don’t take the whole plant, try to pick away from busy roads and wash everything well. You can easily check online to identify the right plants to pick. Tidal Transit Provides ‘Incredible apprenticeship experience'

East Anglia is one of the UK's major energy industry hubs, and offshore wind energy and its supply chain are important parts of the region's economy and business life.

It already offers many employment opportunities and the anticipated growth of those career paths in the coming years is leading to innovative developments in skills and education, work experience, apprenticeships and graduate programmes for the region's young people.

Georgia Cuddihy is one such young person, and when asked about her role as the Office and HSE Apprentice at Tidal Transit Limited, she said: "My apprenticeship is proving to be an incredible experience."

Georgia said: "I was introduced to many routines on my first voyage aboard the CTV Eden Rose, including rope techniques, daily maintenance checks, the vessel refuelling process, navigation and watch procedures and chart management.

Reflecting on her time spent aboard Eden Rose, Georgia said: "When I am drafting method statements and risk assessments, I now feel I have a much better understanding of the practicalities relating to the implementation of HSE policies and procedures."

Leo Hambro is planning for Tidal Transit to be able to offer further apprenticeship opportunities over the coming years, saying: "The importance of increasing the supply of electricity from offshore wind energy in recent announcements made by the UK Government will undoubtedly result in a growth of employment opportunities throughout the industry supply chain. My hope is that there is a corresponding increase in apprenticeship opportunities."

From North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection Paddington and Winnie have now been rehomed, as have two of the older residents in care, Ollie (Irene has now fully recovered from Covid) and Billie. We still have some older cats waiting for someone to offer them a home plus some older kittens who will need experienced cat owners as they are still quite timid having joined us from an outside environment.

There have been many changes introduced since the branch was first set up and one of these is the minimum size of all cat pens used by the Charity to house the cats while they are in our care. This meant that our original pens did not meet the standard required and applied to the three original pens with Stephanie. We were, however, allowed to use the double pen as though it was one pen and the single one for emergency homing. The pens, however, were showing their age and it was decided the time had come to dismantle them. We do still have the two larger pens at Dilham plus the four with Caroline and the two with Irene and we also have the use of some pens with Lesley at her cattery, which all meet the standard required. Having helped to put the original pens up it seems strange not to see them anymore and even stranger now having only two pens to clean.

We have mentioned the Animal Welfare Act in the past and the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH), both of which are working to ensure that all animals receive a certain level of care. There are now changes in the pipeline and Defra is currently reviewing the licensing of animal establishments, e.g. commercial boarding of cats and dogs, pet vending etc. At present this only covers establishments licensed at present although it is anticipated that rescue organisations will be added in the future. The Scottish Government has already announced plans for this legislation for registering and licensing

animal sanctuaries and the Welsh and Northern Ireland Governments have indicated they are likely to follow their lead. The English Government is also expected to act, possibly as early as next year. This may result in some changes as to how Cats Protection works but as we already comply with the minimum standards set out by ADCH, our Head Office are confident that it will not impact greatly on the work that we do at the branch. We will keep you advised of any changes.

Harry was brought to me he’d been found in a crab pot and had got completely entwined in the string, the finders had cut of as much as they could, but I saw straight away it would be a visit to the vets as it was tightly round his legs as the more they try to free themselves the tighter it becomes, he has had to have a small operation, as unfortunately the string had cut deep into his right front leg down to the muscle, hopefully with time it will heal so he can be released back into the wild.

“No Fault” Divorce is now happening From 6 April 2022 the most radical reform of divorce law for decades came into operation.

Previously a divorce could only be based upon “fault” with a husband or wife blaming the other for the breakdown of their marriage. That has now changed and is no longer required.

The new law includes significant changes in terminology that Solicitors and clients will need to come to terms with. More fundamentally however is the potential for a divorce to take place on a joint application and ending the possibility of someone seeking to defend the divorce.

There is now a minimum period of 20 weeks from the commencement of the divorce to the application for a Conditional Order (previously Decree Nisi).

This is to enable a cooling off period and time for reflection whether it is actually referred to that or not in the legislation. It remains to be seen whether reflection will take place because the vast majority of people starting a divorce will have come to the conclusion that they wanted a divorce before the proceedings were started rather than mid-point. There then remains the same six-week period between

the Conditional Order (Decree Nisi) and Final Order (Decree Absolute) as previously.

A minimum period of 26 weeks now applies to a divorce. This is about the length of time that a divorce was taking place under the old legislation although with all these timescales it is subject to potential difficulties with the digital format and procedure that the Court now has.

There is also the potential for a Respondent to try to delay a divorce by not acknowledging receipt of the application but the opportunities to delay or try to stop a divorce are much more limited under the new rules and procedure.

Overall, the aim is to try to ensure that the divorce itself can take place more amicably. The position remains that in most cases it is rare for a husband and a wife both to want a divorce and it is often only one party that is seeking this whereas the other might be reluctant or not want the divorce at all.

What the new rules do however is to prevent a spouse from defending the divorce and so it is hoped that animosity is prevented over the actual divorce itself. It does not change the situation regarding disputed arrangements for children or financial matters which still have to be dealt with although if the divorce itself is dealt with more amicably the hope is that ancillary aspects are not going to be soured

right from the outset by allegations made in the actual divorce.

New Norfolk Aviation Group Formed Many residents of North Norfolk will have had first-hand knowledge of aviation activities in this region.

If you have an interest in any aspect of aeronautics –from the history of flight to the exploration of space, then the newly formed Norfolk Aeronautical Group may well be the place for you. It is a Group where you can meet with people who share your interests and which provides monthly talks (live and on Zoom) on aeronautical matters as well as visits and social occasions with like-minded individuals, many of whom have had a professional interest in aeronautics in their careers and others who are just interested in everything to do with this topic.

Formed in January 2022, its membership has grown to 50 + and the Group meets on the second Thursday of the month at Postwick Village Hall, starting at 7:30pm, with an exclusive coffee lounge and bar open from 7:00pm.

Annual Membership costs £30.00 – pro-rated if you join later in the year. Spouses/ partners of members are treated as associate members and can attend the monthly meetings at no cost. Other Guests are welcome for a small admission charge, and if you want to “try before buy” you can come along to a meeting to ensure the Group is for you.

The subscription also includes a monthly 20-page colour magazine sent as a soft copy whenever possible, but also available as a hard copy, a monthly E-bulletin with hyperlinks to various web sites of interest, and, for anyone not on the internet who cannot attend the live meeting, a DVD with a recording of the event.

All meetings are simultaneously transmitted on Zoom for those who prefer to attend virtually and are available post meeting as a download. As well as the monthly meetings we run a virtual raffle for members and associate members, an annual photographic competition and programmes of aviation related visits and social events.

Hare Coursing Falls After Borderless Success

Hare coursing across the East of England has fallen by almost a third thanks to the success of a “borderless” scheme among police forces.

The crackdown on rural crime comes after Norfolk Police teamed up with six other police forces in September. Incidents of hare coursing across the seven force areas fell from 2044 in

2020-2021 to 1415 in 2021-2022, a drop of 31 per cent. Borders between the forces - Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Kent - were removed when using certain tactics, which has made apprehending and prosecuting offenders easier. The agreement, completed with the support of the Crown Prosecution Service, means the forces become one when using certain powers. Over the past six months this has helped with the use of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), the seizure of dogs and the sharing of all interactions and movements of people suspected to be involved in hare coursing. The move also supports the ongoing national initiative against hare coursing - Operation Galileo.

Norfolk’s rural crime officer, PC Chris Shelley, said: “Hare coursing has a terrible impact on our rural communities: it damages property, threatens people's livelihoods, and subjects people and families to fear and intimidation. “The use of police tactics such as ANPR and the sharing of information, together with the issuing of Community Protection Warnings (CPWs), Community Protection Notices (CPNs) and the granting of Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs) has seen a region-wide reduction of coursing incidents by 31 per cent.

“It’s an issue we take very seriously, and we will take prompt and robust action to prevent this happening in Norfolk and pursue anybody committing this crime.”

Sally Robinson, a District Crown Prosecutor for the CPS, said: “Those who commit hare coursing have historically exploited the borders of neighbouring forces to continue their illegal activities, causing the extreme suffering and unlawful killing of hares, whilst also having a harmful effect on our rural communities. “By using the legal expertise of the CPS and the operational knowledge of seven police forces in an innovative and collaborative way to effectively remove those borders, we have collectively built stronger cases for prosecution and made it harder for the perpetrators to offend in the future. The CPS takes wildlife crime seriously and we will continue to work closely with the police and other partners to bring offenders to justice whenever our legal test is met.”

Anyone who sees hare coursing taking place is asked to contact police immediately on 999 and provide officers with a description of the people involved, any registration numbers, vehicle descriptions and the location and direction of travel. Its important people don’t confront hare coursers or put themselves at risk.

Mindfulness through Art

No: 100 Group, Royal Air Force - Reunion 2022 & 2023

Norfolk County Council Adult Learning Wellbeing Programme Coordinator John Madeley contacted Age Concern North Norfolk last year to see if we were interested in them delivering courses to our clients in the Day Centre. The courses are art and craft based but with mindfulness and well-being at their heart. As face-to-face tutoring might have been difficult, they even gave us a laptop to facilitate on-line courses.

We have had several sessions with the tutor Jennie and have covered art inspired by music, rock painting and fingerprint art. The workshops are fun and give our clients the opportunity to express themselves using a range of art materials and music. The sessions also teach our clients about famous artists and their techniques while looking at strategies to help with well-being. Several people made Easter cards and one gentleman made a ‘Get Well’ card for his wife using his fingerprints to depict a row of balloons. His wife was thrilled to receive it.

All our clients demonstrate exceptional concentration during these workshops and gain a sense of achievement and feelings of well-being and confidence afterwards.

These sessions will continue for several weeks at the centre and are helping support staff to develop future activities building on what they have also learned.

In 1943 the Allies formed No: 100 Group to provide aircraft for electronic countermeasures and intruder operations over the European continent. The group flew from seven airfields in North Norfolk and included bomber and fighter aircraft. It was manned by both RAF, US and Commonwealth aircrew and groundcrews.

More detailed information on No: 100 Group and the activities of the No 100 Group Association can be found at: https://raf100groupassociation.org The association has held reunions since WWII and the next get together is over the weekend of 20/22nd May 2022.

On Sunday the 22nd May, the association is to hold a memorial service at St Peter’s Church, Haveringland located on the peritrack of the former RAF Swannington, an airfield near Cawston, which was part of the group. The service starts at 1330hrs and will include a wreath-laying, a flypast by a Tiger Moth, followed by 1940s entertainment and a buffet inside the church. All are cordially invited to attend.

The 80th anniversary of the formation of the group will take place on 21st May 2023.

North Norfolk Open Studios is Back

After a very successful first year, North Norfolk Open Studios is back this Spring with even more local artists taking part. 135 local artists have now joined the co-operative, which was formed in December 2020 in the hope of being able to open studios last Spring. As it turned out the studios were allowed to open with appropriate health precautions and over 7,000 locals and visitors took the opportunity to meet artists, see how and where they work, and to buy work.

This year studios all over North Norfolk will be open from 28th May - 5th June, coinciding with the bank holiday and half term week. There will be a preview taster exhibition at The Old Workshop Gallery, Corpusty from 14th May - 5th June featuring a selection of work by participating artists.

interesting place to visit in itself. The studio is a World War 2 bunker like building which was a lookout post. Tucked away outside West Beckham, it's close to one of the highest points in Norfolk.

Also, part of the South of Sheringham trail are Joannie Sandford Cook and Mo Teeuw in West Beckham, and Victoria and Martin Kurrein in Baconsthorpe.

All the artists are looking forward to welcoming visitors again this year and any necessary health precautions will be observed. It's a great opportunity to buy original work as well as prints and cards directly from artists and to talk to them about their work.

NNUH Dementia Fayre Goes Virtual

Do you have a question about dementia care and support? The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’s annual Dementia Fayre is going virtual next month to provide information and support to people living with dementia and their families.

A panel of experts will be assembled on Thursday 19 May between 1pm and 2pm to field any questions you have as part of Dementia Action Week.

The online question and answer session will be chaired by Prof Nancy Fontaine, NNUH Chief Nurse, and will include representatives from Alzheimer’s Society, Admiral Nurse Service and members of the NNUH team, including Consultant Dementia Lead Sarah Clarke, Dementia Palliative Care Specialist Nurse Lynsey Hannant and Dementia Care Specialist Nurse Jenny Woolgrove.

Liz Yaxley, NNUH Dementia Services Manager, who will also be on the panel, said: “We are thrilled to bring a wealth of expertise together as part of Dementia Action Week to provide as much help and support to people living with dementia, their carers and families and an opportunity to provide an update on our Trust’s dementia support

Members of the East Coast Warriors Football Club are delighted a campaign to fundraise for a new defibrillator at their pitch has finally paid off.

The lifesaving piece of equipment has been installed at Bodham Playing Field following several months of fundraising. Emma Gosling, club secretary, said: "We are extremely proud to have achieved our goal of raising funds to purchase a defibrillator. We feel this is a vital piece of equipment to have. The clubhouse short mat league has finished with Bob A winning the top shot award on 118 points. The leading lady was Janice A on 91 points (2nd place) and Keith P on 89 points. The cup competition saw two thrilling semifinals. Brenda S defeated Val B, 11-5 and John Bl just edged past Jackie P,8-6, in an extra end play off. Unfortunately, Brenda couldn’t find her stunning form of late and was defeated 0-11 in the final. Congratulations to John on his 3rd cup victory and many thanks for organising the events over the winter. It has helped swell the club ‘coffers’ by over £400 and given over 20 members a very enjoyable afternoon throughout the winter.

If you are not sure you wish to be involved as a club member just yet, then the green is open for the public to play, as and when open. Just turn up with smooth soled, flat shoes, borrow a set of bowls and play for 1 hour at £2 per person or 2 hours for £3.50 per person. We are looking forward to welcoming you.

The first event of the season saw a club ‘spoon drive’ with 19 members and the mayor enjoying beautiful warm weather. The green played well, especially for winners Ian H (+20) and Chris H (+12), but not so much for Brenda S and Gay B (-20)! The second spoon drive was almost ‘déjà vu’. Ian H won (+21) and Chris H was second (+16). The major ‘loser’ was Tony B (-22)! Unbelievably, Ian H won the 3rd ‘spoon drive’ with a +13 score and Jean N +6. President Philip E had an off day scoring -22!

The first friendly of the season saw a visit from Newark BC and they inflicted a 15-shot defeat upon us, winning on 3 rinks as opposed to Marrams 1 rink victory. Southrepps BC visited

This season the club are competing in the Men’s NBA league on Wednesday evenings, the mixed Federation league on Tuesday evenings and the mixed NANSA league on midweek afternoons, along with cup competitions. We will play over 20 friendly matches with clubs from as far afield as Southampton and Newark, as well as with teams from within the county and locally. There are matches most weekend afternoons and some in midweek. So, there is a game for you, at a time to suit and at a level of competitiveness to suit also. Added to this, for 22 weeks, 7 days a week you can play a social ‘roll up’ or play in club competition games. Membership is only £65
