Swan Song for FALCON Concerts

The Falcon has flown

FALCON (Facilitating Arts and Literature for the Children of Norfolk) Concerts have been entertaining music lovers at St Andrew’s Church, Holt since 2012, putting on 30 concerts and raising about £16,000 which has supported FALCON’s work bringing arts and music to young people as well as supporting St Andrew’s Church. It was decided at the FALCON AGM in October 2018 to wind down FALCON and that it will cease to exist after March 2019. Given the concerts popularity they will continue under a new name StART (St Andrew’s Arts Fund) organized and managed by a committee led by Mark Jones, the Director of Music at St Andrew’s, and will continue to support arts initiatives for the young.

Another wonderful Falcon concert, sadly the last under the Falcon banner and name, was a ‘cracker’. Nick Beever, countertenor and Richard MacKenzie, lute, gave us a delightful evening of songs and pieces for solo lute, by John Dowland and his contemporaries, at St Andrew’s Church. 16 century songs, largely on the subject of love, and often blighted love, are very gentle so well suited to the sound of a counter tenor and lute, a plucked stringed instrument often depicted being played by angels in early art. I sat there dreaming of 16th century musicians entertaining me in my husband’s great hall surrounded by my ladies in waiting and some handsome young swains! It was truly wonderful. The concerts will now be run under a new banner – StArt – (The St Andrew’s Art Project) and a new committee. The funds raised will continue to support arts activities for young people and children locally, particularly at Holt Primary School. I look forward to the next concert under this new leadership. Keep the date, May the 11th, in your diary when pianist Veronica Shoot will be performing for us. Theo Crowder

The final FALCON concert took place on Saturday 9th February at St Andrew’s Church and was well attended by over 100 people. Before the concert began a surprise guest was introduced in the form of High Sheriff of Norfolk, Charles Watt, who was there to award concert founder and organizer Phil Barrett the High Sheriff’s Award ‘in recognition of great and valuable services to the community’. Phil said, “FALCON has fulfilled many, if not all, of its aims and objectives, and greatly enjoyed doing so. This seems a natural time to draw its activities to a close. Much good work has been achieved across North Norfolk, and the events list is extensive – concerts, art installations, poetry, drama, music – sometimes simultaneously! We have worked in 35 schools, 9 libraries, theatres and community buildings throughout North Norfolk and involved numerous artists from all disciplines.

WEYBOURNE GOOD COMPANIONS

On Wednesday, 27th February, twenty members of Weybourne Good Companions Group met at the village hall to celebrate the club’s 22nd birthday. Refreshments were provided, which included two delicious cakes made by Sandy Bailey. Entertainment was provided by Gordon James, who sang a variety of popular songs and encouraged everyone to join in, which made for an enjoyable afternoon. The Good Companions Group meet in Weybourne village hall at 2.30 pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month and enjoy a variety of speakers and other forms of entertainment. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the meeting in March has had to be cancelled. The next meeting will now be held on Wednesday, 24th April, when Debbie Thompson is coming to speak about Sheringham Little Theatre. Entry is £2.50, which includes refreshments. All welcome!

It remains for us to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported FALCON in any way over the years – there are so many it is impossible to name them all, but you know who you are. “

My husband bought an exercise machine to help him shed a few pounds. He set it up in the basement but didn’t use it much, so he moved it to the bedroom. It gathered dust there, too, so he put it in the living room. Weeks later I asked how it was going. “I was right,” he said. “I do get more exercise now. Every time I close the curtains, I have to walk around the machine.”

County Council News

Finally I could not write an article for the Chronicle this month without paying tribute to Philip High. I was very lucky to have the opportunity to learn from and work alongside Philip as a District Councillor. Philip was a consummate gentleman and a special friend, much loved by his colleagues and by former constituents. A highly principled man he spent more than 20 years in local politics always fighting for what he truly believed were the best outcomes for local residents, in his much loved home town of Holt. He was happy to work cross party for the good of all, and at a time when politics is so fractured I think that is the most important lesson we can all take from his example. To Julie and his family we send our love at this most difficult time.

from County Councillor Sarah Butikofer

sarah.butikofer.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk or 07968 897235

What a difference a year makes – in so many different ways. This time last year we were all struggling to get back to normal after the ‘Beast from the East’ this year we are getting back to normality after an unseasonably hot and dry spell. The climate change we are all facing was brought to our attention once more by a group of climate change protestors at County Hall on the day of the budget setting meeting. Some of you will no doubt of seen the media coverage of the event which held up proceedings for several hours. Whilst in general I have nothing against peaceful protest, (it is part of the democratic society in which we all live). It does concern me that others who were smaller in number and had issues they desperately needed to make their voices heard about at that meeting were unable to do so. As any County Councillor will tell you, the County does face very significant budget constraints in this and coming years; but the areas, groups, and individuals that are facing the hardest cuts are those I believe most need our support and assistance. Some of those who will face direct and personal impacts from the budget voted through, had come along to ensure their concerns were addressed that day; but sadly because of the delays had to leave before we got to that stage of the debate. The County did eventually pass a budget that makes savings of £31.6 million pounds this year, but in doing so confirmed changes to Children’s centre provision and cuts to minimum income guarantees. I do worry that this will increase the rural isolation and loneliness some residents face in our district, thank goodness for the wonderful community groups we have in our area who work so hard to plug these gaps. As always if you are affected by any of the issues I have mentioned above, or if there are any other concerns you would like to raise with me please do get in touch.

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB

We had our 5th Charter Lunch on the 3rd March at The Dormy House, West Runton. Thirty three of us sat down to a splendid three course meal in the Restaurant. We welcomed fellow Lions from Taverham & District, Norwich North Alpha, Dereham, Beccles, UEA, Attleborough and the newest club in our Zone, Reepham.

I believe I can speak for everyone when I say that the food was very good indeed and the service, considering the number of diners was also good.

Steve, the owner of the Dormy House, donated two free tickets to any London Show. These were auctioned and the £70 paid will go straight to the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital towards their new Parent’s Room. If anyone would like to have fun whilst fundraising then please ‘phone our Secretary, Brian Harris, on 01263 821276, for more information.

Our club met on Thursday 21st February for drinks and a tasty lunch at The Dales Hotel ,Upper Sheringham 23 members and guest were introduced by chairman Mike Clayton to our speaker Chris Bell a Texan by birth but now a weather expert and lecturer at U.E.A Chris told us that right from childhood he wanted to be a weatherman, and so he left school and started at Louisiana State University reading Climatology, after a year he was given the chance to study at U.E.A and shortly after starting there he met his future wife. The next few years involved them both doing degrees in America, and later he took a masters degree ,they then decided to return to UK and he joined Weather-quest at U.E.A in 2004. They both love Norfolk and find it a pleasure to live and work here. He talked of how forecasting was not necessarily a local thing anymore as with computers local weather stations were less needed. Weather-quest provides forecasts to agriculture, and to the renewable energy firms to forecast not only atmospheric but also sea conditions which can be very helpful. Chris then moved on to his other interest 'Storm Chasing' and his interest in Supercell storms, which are tornados and heavy storms. He explained how these storms were formed and the enormous impact they had particularly on the Plains of America in April,May and June.He went on to tell us that the largest storms were two and a half miles wide and could wreak absolute havoc. We were shown videos of storms forming and people chasing storms, also pictures of the devastation caused. After questions David Coslett thanked Chris for a very entertaining talk which had stimulated so much thought and interest. We welcome prospective new members to our meetings,if you are interested contact John Whittington on 01263 820333.

Students at Sheringham High School are preparing to debut their production of the Lionel Bart classic musical ‘Oliver!’. The story focuses on abandoned orphan Oliver and his life as he travels from workhouse to undertakers, and on to the back alleys of old London Town where he crosses paths with the irrepressible Artful Dodger, the slippery Fagin and evil Bill Sikes. The cast began work on their production just after Christmas and have been put through their paces by artistic director Kate Nicol, while the musicians are being steered by Iain Mitchell-Finnigan and Jane Bussey. Pupils from all years in the school are participating both on stage and behind the scenes, as well as performing in the orchestra, which will accompany sections of the performance. The production is being performed at Sheringham High School at 7pm on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th March, plus there will be a familyfriendly matinee (2pm) on Saturday 30th. Everyone is welcome. ‘Who will buy’ a ticket?! They’re available in advance (£5) by visiting the High School (during usual school hours, payment by cash or cheque) or can be purchased on the day. Do come and support us - we hope that you’ll enjoy it so much, you’ll want to ‘Be Back Soon’!

Time Flies

The average age of people living in our military retirement community is 85. Recently, a neighbour turned 100, and a big birthday party was thrown. Even his son turned up. “How old are you?” a tenant asked. “I’m 81 years old,” he answered. The tenant shook her head. “They sure grow up fast, don’t they?”

Scam victims in Norfolk are set to receive better support

trained volunteers. Those volunteers will include members of Norfolk’s Special Constabulary. Having assessed the needs of victims, the volunteers will work with them to improve their confidence and safety, developing a plan to reduce their vulnerability to being victimised again.

As a result of a partnership between the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and victim care service. The Scams Prevention Service will see Norfolk residents who are targeted by scammers receive help to avoid being victimised again. It will also provide followup support to cope and recover from what they have experienced. A Scams Prevention Coordinator, funded by Norfolk PCC Lorne Green to work within the Norfolk and Suffolk Victim Care Service, will be central to the project. The PCC, who became a Friends Against Scams ‘Scambassador’ last year and recently spoke up about his own experience of falling victim to a scam, said: “The emotional and financial hurt of being a victim of a scam can be massive. Martin runs for MIND

Martin Garrard of the Holt Fish Bar did the Brighton Marathon last year with his best friend Andrew Graveling and raised £3,500 for Cancer Research UK. This year he wants to raise even more….. “The enjoyment I had from it left me wanting more. With the knowledge gained and a lot more training, I’m sure I’ll do it in a lot better time this year. I’m running for MIND, the mental health charity. I’m aiming to raise as much money as possible and have already raised over £2000. I know a lot of people who’ve had or still have mental health issues. MIND do so much to help these people who are suffering daily. There are different ways of dealing with mental health issues for everyone. Exercise, especially running for me, is very therapeutic and I highly recommend it to everyone who is physically able to. I think setting yourself goals is a good idea in life in general. Whether it be a marathon or something smaller, it doesn’t even have to be something physical. Just short-term and long-term goals to keep yourself focused and motivated. If you’ve got things to aim for it’s always positive. The support we received for last year’s Marathon was overwhelming, but this time it’s been even more.” If you’d like to sponsor Martin the link is https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MartinGarrard1 or there is a collection box in his fish and chip shop, Holt Fish Bar. Missing Messiah

Dear Jo, It would appear that ministers and Biblical scholars have better things to do, so it falls to me to take up the gauntlets thrown down by Maurice Gray (“Readers Write”, Issues 418 and 419). In 418, perhaps the references Hebrews 9:14 and Peter 1:22 are misprinted as neither contradicts the other, indeed they don’t even discuss the same thing. There are small differences elsewhere in the Bible, but we would suspect fraudulent collusion if witness accounts tallied exactly throughout – any criminal lawyer would tell you that. Next, I have no quarrel with Buddhism (or any other major religion) compared with Christianity, as the Bhagavad Gita and the Koran have much in common with the Bible, particularly the two great commandments Leviticus 19:18 and Deuteronomy 6:5. Turning to Issue 419 and Maurice’s hypothetical plurality of Messiahs (Zachariah 4:11-14 and Revelation 11:4), Rev. 11:7 actually tells us that the two objects represent the two witnesses required by Jewish law for validity (and later killed by those who didn’t want to know). Incidentally, Jesus’s earthly body was not fictional (two Roman historians, Josephus and Tacitus, record this), and I earnestly pray for the immortal souls of apostles like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens who think otherwise, deliberately turning their backs on Jesus (and the Holy Trinity) when they know of Him, and dismissing as fantasy the experience and conviction of many people (see, for instance, Ken Akehurst, “Everyone’s Guide to the Hereafter”, Daniel Co.); see Mark 8:38. Space forbids further exposition of the sweet reasonableness of religion and faith. Cedric Lytton.

District Council Comments

Dear Jo, Oh how I agree with Mrs D Gibson’s two points under ‘District Council Comments’ in your last issue. I also suffer from a councillor not responding to emails. I know councillors may be very busy people, but it takes less than a minute to acknowledge an email and give a rough idea of a response time. And I also cringe at some of our councillors’ letters in the local press and their

childish tone. Can they please refrain; or else act with politeness and respect? About one third of the electorate never bother to vote, a sizable minority, and silly correspondence just puts more people off local politics. David Hurdle

Thank you

Dear Jo I would like to thank all my neighbours and friends for their kindness following the death of my husband John also for the donations given for Cancer Research. Mrs Shirley Langdon.

Bus Passes

Dear Jo, A lot of O.A.P.s have said that they are prepared to pay 50p each time they use the bus to help pay for the shortfall in payments, received by the bus companies from the council. Unfortunately, this is not possible as the bus companies would be prosecuted. I have spoken to Charles Saunders and he said it would be better if we paid for one fare each week, which would help keep his buses on the road. June Wood.

Messiahs Are Witnesses

Dear Jo, Jesus was a fictitious witness to the truth at (John 18:37). The book of Revelation called the two messiahs witnesses because it wished to cover the fact that they were messiahs (Chapter eleven). The two messiahs were the real witnesses to the truth as the Dead Sea Scroll called the Community Rule (1Qs) column VIII both testify, “When these are in Israel, the Council of the Community shall be established in truth. It shall be an Everlasting Plantation, a House of Holiness for Israel, an Assembly of Supreme Holiness for Aaron. They shall be witnesses to the truth at the Judgement, and shall be the elect of Goodwill who shall atone for the Land and pay to the wicked their reward”. See also (Isaiah 44:8, and 55:4). I hope this gives a better understanding of my letter entitled the missing messiah, Holt chronicle, issue 419. Your sincerely, Maurice Gray.

Anonymous Letter Reply

Dear Jo To the Holt resident who wrote me the most touching and kind letter regarding my Parliamentary selection. Thank you, I was quite struck by your thoughts, comments and belief in me. Although you didn’t identify yourself and claimed you were ‘very forgettable – although we had met before,’ let me say now, to me, no resident is forgettable and your letter definitely was not. I value every person I’ve met, talked to or tried to help over the decade that I have been working for the residents of Holt and our district. You asked how I will get my message out – well you can find me on all social media platforms or you can email me through my website www.duncanbaker.org.uk. But failing that, I am in Holt most days and if you contact me, as many people will vouch, I will come and see you, listen to your views and try to help in any way I can. Once again, thank you, your letter was much appreciated. Duncan Baker.

Unbelievable Motor Insurance claims

An invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my car and vanished. Coming home I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I haven’t got. Going to work at 7am this morning I drove out of my drive straight into a bus. The bus was 5 minutes early. I bumped into a lamp-post which was obscured by human beings. I didn’t think the speed limit applied after midnight. I had been driving for 40 years when I feel asleep at the wheel and had an accident. I was on the way to the doctor with rear end trouble when my universal joint gave way causing me to have an accident. The accident was caused by me waving to the man I hit last week. The bloke was all over the road. I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him.

Thank You

Dear Jo, On the morning of Wednesday 6th February two friends and I were visiting Holt for a day’s shopping. 10 minutes into our visit I slipped over the kerb, hitting my head on the slabs and twisting my ankle. Total strangers came to my aid, helping me to stand and getting me to a seat at The Horatio Café where the manager sat me inside and gave me a hot drink. A young man called Gregg, manager of Boots the Chemist had a look at my ankle, his quiet and gentle attention gave me great comfort and confidence. An ambulance was called, and Gregg rang the council to inform them about my accident and about my car being left in the car park. He even arranged for it to be driven back to my home in Yarmouth the next day. The ambulance arrived and I was taken to James Paget Hospital where I received first class treatment and was home by 7.30pm. A huge thank you to the wonderful help from strangers in Holt, to me, no longer strangers, but friends. I’m doing fine and will soon be on my feet. I am so happy knowing, somehow – somewhere, people do care. Holt’s good neighbours. May God bless you all. Mrs Pam Cooley

Dear friends, By the time you read this the church will have embarked on its journey through lent towards Holy Week and Easter. Mirroring the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness fasting and being tempted, Lent provides the faithful an opportunity to take time and reflect on their own spiritual life and relationship with God. Lent is much more than giving up chocolate or gin or both! It is a time for searching after God that we might be renewed in faith and hope, and little by little transformed after the image of Christ Jesus. With God’s help we are trying to better than we are, to reflect more fully the image of God’s love in whose image we are created. That searching finds expression in prayer and worship, in devotion and study of Scripture, in acts of charity and kindness. Lent is characterized by setting aside time to be with God in Christ Jesus, and to allow the Holy Spirit to direct and rule our hearts in the way of love. And so being transformed ourselves we can set out about transforming the lives of others in our communities and in our world. Some of you may know that in 2015 I was elected as a member of General Synod, the Church of England’s Parliament. Synod normally meets twice a year, and last month we met for four days in Church House at Westminster in London. Rather like the parliament that meets across the road, much of the business we are concerned with is legal legislation. However, we also concern ourselves with matters relating to the mission of the Church and at the recent sitting of the Synod there was much debate about the transforming nature of God’s love and the challenges and opportunities for the church to help bring about that transformation. We debated and passed motions that dealt with the church’s ministry and mission among the homeless, the excluded, the poor and the marginalized. We were concerned with the effects of climate change on our planet and on the some of the poorest communities in the world. We discussed at length the need to engage with the young and the need to preach the good news about Christ afresh to every generation. And finally, if all that had not been enough, the Archbishop of Canterbury introduced a debate on the State of the Nation. This was not a debate about Brexit but about a deeply divided country and the need for humility, mutual respect, reconciliation, generous hospitality, engagement in our communities. We were challenged as a church to reimagine the values of servanthood, and the need to pay attention to the poor and the marginalized. A call was made for a new prophetic vision of what it means to be human and to inhabit this world, and to transform our communities and a deeply divided nation with the love of God. We were also invited to pray for our nation, our politicians, those in national and local government. Yet we can only do any of this if we are prepared to get involved, to turn outwards, to stop being self-obsessed and to go out and engage with society, with the world in which we live. Surely, this is true for anyone us, faith or none. If we want to www.holtchronicle.co.uk

13

transform the communities and the world around us we have to have our faces set outwards, to concern ourselves not only with our own needs but more importantly the needs of others. The Archbishop called for members of the Church, who seek to be transformed by the love of God, to speak the language of love more fluently, to talk about and look more like Jesus, to proclaim the good news of the love of God in word and in deed He called for us to engage with our communities in new and exciting ways, and to set about transforming the lives of others in love and in truth, in humility and prayer, in generous hospitality and reconciliation. Hopefully, this Lent we might heed his call.

Every blessing

Fr. Howard

Sure Start – Another strike against Holt’s young residents

You may well hear people who even live here saying that they have never seen any child living below the poverty line. Unfortunately, this is far from true. Times have changed since poverty was openly obvious and recognized from a Dickensian description. There is in Holt, one of the highest number of children in Norfolk living in poverty or below the “breadline”. Once again, this fact about Holt has been dismissed in a very poor decision to deprive Holt’s young families by closing their SURE START CENTRE.

This is the latest in a long line of negative decisions about Holt made centred on the so-called “fact” that Holt’s needs are not as great as others in North Norfolk. This is FALSE; especially for local people who are often from generations born and raised in Holt or its environs, forming part of our heritage as what was a lovely Market Town in a rural community. It is not just what was done but the way in which it was done that is completely unacceptable.

Holt’s young parents, just as the rest of us, were given a false sense of security when told in September that Holt Sure Start was NOT to be closed, as was to be the fate of 46 of 53 Children’s Centres. The 46 to be closed were to be moved “into the community”, the description of which left many people with huge reservations about its suitability. Libraries and rooms in houses certainly do not fill me with any faith in this system. Having this information for months, I think it is perfectly normal behaviour that there weren’t lots of strong objections from the public regarding our position during the Public Consultation.

However, knowing that this Consultation was to provide vital input at their Committee, it was sent into the public domain stating the proposals they had already made, which it could very well be claimed skewed the responses. Why did they not just put out their plans for change without given any “proposed towns”? Apparently, the late changes all came about due to Consultation.

Then came the incredible decision that Holt had not just been dropped from the top 7 places, but it had now been placed below 15 other centres which had originally been chosen for closure.

So, under the original proposals, which were openly published, Holt’s Children’s Centre would have been retained. However, in January 2019, updated plans were to see 15 Children’s Centres kept and 38 closed.

I cannot find any fair or logical reasons, why or how Holt’s position could be shifted so dramatically in these discussions or what professional advice could have been given that could justify this huge change in position. I have asked to discuss Holt’s situation, but I still await a response. We have a purpose made building, in the right place for our young families and which gives the others we cater for parking facilities or direct public transport routes. Most of all it is used, appreciated and does a good job. Why would anyone want to spend 1p on changing the venue for this facility, especially for what is proposed, in my opinion something, causing upheaval, far less likely to succeed and far less appropriate! Cllr Maggie Prior

Mayor of Holt, Chair of Holt Town Council. Holt.

Much has been undertaken over the last 2 years under the leadership of Mary Williams our Chair and Trustee including new matching kitchen equipment, new curtains, entry foyer carpeting, decorating of toilets and hall and a major replacement of the hall floor. East Anglian Air Ambulance launch momentous campaign to become a 24/7 service

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has launched an ambitious plan to become a 24/7 helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) provider by 2020. The charity currently operates 365-days-a-year but not 24-hours-aday, meaning that if an incident happened between midnight and 07:00 there is currently no HEMS provision in the region. The charity is aiming to cover this gap and become a full 24/7 HEMS service by 2020. To do that they need to raise an additional £1 million a year to fund the operation. The type of incidents the charity attend – serious road traffic collisions, cardiac arrests, traumatic injuries and other medical emergencies - do not stop when their crew go offline. While a 24/7 service seemed to make sense, the charity needed to be sure, so have been gathering evidence to prove it. They worked with the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST), who task them, to review incidents over the course of a year where critical care was required but unavailable. They also assessed the need first-hand by trialling an overnight service via rapid response vehicle (RRV) four days a week from the Norwich base. The results of this work confirmed a significant region-wide need for overnight critical care, particularly in rural Norfolk. In the first twelve months of the overnight trial they attended 220 missions, but they say that with the helicopter they could do so much more. Matthew Jones, Director of Operations at EAAA, said; “Becoming a 24/7 service by air will provide the people of East Anglia with a service that has not previously been available. By operating 24/7 we believe that we will treat approximately 600 more patients every year. Patient care is at the heart of everything we do at EAAA, so if we can be there for 600 more people each year and further reduce the impact of trauma and medical emergencies in the community then this is a great step forward for us. We currently need to raise £12M a year to operate our service, and it will cost an additional £1m a year to fund a full 24/7 operation.” Steve Jones has witnessed first-hand the care that EAAA provide. Steve was riding his motorcycle in Norfolk, when a car he overtook turned into his path catapulting him from his motorbike, head-first through a brick wall and into a ditch filled with water. Steve was unconscious and submerged under the water. The Anglia One crew was activated and, travelling by helicopter, they arrived on scene 21 minutes later. By this time the ditch was filled with Steve’s blood and the team knew they had to get him out quickly. Steve was making gurgling noises but remained unconscious. The crew made the decision to sedate and intubate him to take control of his breathing. He was then packaged and flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Steve had suffered such a traumatic head injury that the team thought he would not survive. Steve remained in hospital for 10 weeks, but last November he walked in to the Norwich base to meet the EAAA team and the EEAST land paramedics who also provided treatment on scene. Not only has he suffered no lasting effects, but he is also in the process of finishing his PhD in Software Engineering. Steve and his wife Claire said; “My wife and I are extremely grateful for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and their East of England Ambulance Service colleagues. I am in no doubt that these heroes saved my life that day and I am optimistic and positive for the future which includes completing the last parts of my PhD and embarking on a Software Engineering industrial research career.” If Steve’s accident had happened between the hours of midnight and 7am he would not have the received the treatment he did, and it is unlikely that he would have survived. The charity say they are already incredibly grateful to the community for all their support but are asking for help to raise the additional £1m a year Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole needed to operate 24/7 so they can save more lives like Steve’s. If you range of family, property and business would like to find out more about the campaign or to donate, please visit legal matters with care and professionalism. www.mission247.co.uk. CREDIT CRUNCH COOKING Leftover Magic

I love a roast on a Sunday, but in amongst everything else that the week throws at me sometimes it’s a lot of work for one meal. One way of making it count is to ensure you cook enough to see you through the next day’s meal as well. In this case, as you have a whole chicken to play with, it only means a few extra veg and enough gravy for stock. I tend to buy my chicken from a butcher now rather than the supermarket, which although slightly more expensive, is far better quality, which is always worth the extra and can be justified by using it for 2 meals! Boiling the chicken carcass up is such a good idea, as it is a fast way to infuse flavour to your soup, and gives an extra nutritional boost to it as well. This soup is very filling, tops up your 5 a day, has a great balance of protein, carbs, fat and fibre, and is such an amazing comfort food. You can do the same with leftover lamb or beef, just change your herbs. The gravy adds a real richness to it all, and best of all, you’re wasting nothing!

Leftover Chicken Noodle Soup

1 leftover cooked chicken carcass, meat removed and saved 2 onions 1 leek 4 carrots ¼ swede Leftover veg from your roast meal, (I had broccoli and cabbage) Handful spaghetti Sage Leftover gravy Put the carcass in a pan and cover with boiling water, adding a bay leaf. Put lid on and simmer whilst you are cooking everything else. Chop your onions, leek, carrot and swede and sweat in a deep pan with a little olive oil and the lid on for a few minutes. Add just enough boiling water to cover the veg and simmer until veg are softening, around 15 mins. Put in your leftover gravy and veg and stir, adding in a little sage. Bring back up to boil and simmer for around 10 mins. Strain your carcass and add the liquid to the soup, and put in your meat. Break up the spaghetti into small pieces and add, simmering for around 8 – 10 mins until the pasta is cooked. Serve with crusty bread.

We are certainly hitting the ground running this Spring, with lots of activities and events going on at the Centre. The ever-popular Wrestling Evenings are making a suitably dramatic comeback on 23rd March, bringing us an evening of exciting live- action grappling and entertainment that’s not to be missed. Demonstrating our diversity, we have an Italian Food and Quiz Night plus 3 Cinema Films showing this month, with the latest from the Jurassic Franchise, ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ – a great matinee for all the family to enjoy, an evening showing of ‘First Man’, a dramatic biopic about Neil Armstrong and the space race, and a double showing of ‘The Wife’ with Glenn Close, all great cinematic treats, and only £5.00 per head, making it a very affordable night out. I hope that you will consider coming and giving us your opinions on our Public Consultation Day on 30th March, a chance for you to hear all about the charity and its forward vision, and to feedback to us what you would like to see the Centre doing. We will have a café running all day, so pop in and have a chat with us over coffee and cake. The Community Centre is dedicated to providing an exciting and affordable facility to hire or to enjoy clubs and events at, and we very much hope to see people joining us to develop our plans for the future. For more information or to book, please call the Office on 01263 713427 Tues, Wed, and Saturdays, or email us on holtcc@btconnect.com or find us on our new Facebook page. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson.

Aylsham Singers welcome new members!

Aylsham Singers is a Community Choir consisting of women (sopranos & altos) and men (tenors and basses). The choir has been in existence for well over 10 years and has performed many concerts - with music ranging from the Beach Boys to Bach. The choir is led by Musical Director Viv Cairns, who studied music at the Royal Academy of Music and now teaches music in Norfolk schools. Concerts are usually based around a theme. The next concert, at St Michaels’ Church, Aylsham on May 18th 2019 from 7.30pm, has a ‘water’ theme and includes music by Henry Mancini and Billy Joel. Other projects in the pipeline include involvement in a charity single. Aylsham Singers are keen to recruit a few new members - particularly men. People of all ages and musical abilities are currently being invited to join the choir. There is no requirement to be able to read music singers just need to able to ‘hold a tune’. The choir is having open rehearsals over the coming weeks to allow anyone who is interested to come and have a sing and see if being in a choir is something they would like to do. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings (from 7.30 9.30pm) at St John’s Catholic Church, White Hart Street, Aylsham. If you would like to attend one of the open rehearsals, please phone 01263-731170 for further details.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

Peter Yeo FRPS, DPAGB, APAGB is from Lincolnshire and is sponsored by Fotospeed – suppliers of photographic printing papers, of which he had a supply for sale at a discount to members. He lectures to camera Diana Knight’s Chameleon in Action clubs and to Federations around the country and is happy to accept bookings for lecture tours in areas distant from his Lincolnshire home. He also enjoys judging and has been a Selector for a number of national and international exhibitions.

North Norfolk Photographic Society are in the middle of a competition for the Mersea Island Cup against 5 other clubs – and so far are doing very well! The clubs are widely spread – Tonbridge, Colchester, Vale, Camborne & Redruth and Paul Keates’ Preening East Ipswich which makes for a very interesting competition to see the work from such a variety of clubs.

The clubs all submitted 10 pictures, and all are judged at all 6 clubs’ meetings by 6 different judges. The end result is not known until all 6 contests have taken place and the total marks totted up.

But at the Holt venue on 20th February, the North Norfolk club beat them all! Judge Peter Yeo from Lincolnshire complimented the North Norfolk club for achieving top David Godfrey’s - Moorhens In marks for 2 of their entries, for which thanks Aerial Combat from the Tonbridge club ` go to Diana Knight (Chameleon in Action) and to Paul Keates (Preening).

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org/

Full Fibre boost for Norfolk businesses

27 February 2019 Thousands of Norfolk businesses will be able to benefit from ultrafast broadband after Norfolk County Council secured £8m from the UK Government Digital, Culture, Media & Sport department’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund. The £8m funding is part of an £11m programme to upgrade more than 370 of Norfolk’s public-sector buildings to the latest ultrafast connection speeds. It will enable 230 schools, 108 Norfolk County Council Corporate buildings (including 38 libraries) and 34 fire stations to be upgraded to gigabit (1,000 mbps) fibre internet connections within two years. As a result of the scheme, thousands of Norfolk businesses will be able to benefit from lower fibre connection costs by using private funding to access the upgraded fibre network. They can also apply to a voucher scheme that will provide up to £2,500 per business to fund their connection and pay the first-year running costs. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Chairman of Norfolk County Council’s Digital Innovation and Efficiency Committee, said: “This funding will deliver significant digital infrastructure across the county, in addition to what the County Council has already delivered. Ensuring that Norfolk has the digital connectivity it needs to build a thriving economy is a priority for us. "I would like to thank officers at the County Council for their hard work in ensuring that we were awarded this funding and the businesses who supported this bid. I am pleased this scheme will benefit them as well as provide vastly improved services.”

Warning to residents following further cold caller scam

Police have issued a further warning for residents to be vigilant to cold callers claiming to be police officers following an incident in Walpole Highway near Wisbech. It comes after an elderly resident received a call on Friday 22 February 2018 from someone claiming to be from the police stating her bank card had been used to purchase counterfeit Euros. He asked the victim to assist police enquiries by purchasing 4,000 Euros from a Bureau-de-Change, which would allow police to check if they were counterfeit. The victim agreed to do this twice and on each occasion the cash has been collected by a courier from her home address. The male courier is described as being black, around 6ft 1 tall, of a slim build, aged in his 20s and was wearing hi-vis clothing. Similar incidents have been reported throughout the county and it has been known that suspects request cash is posted or for residents to purchase high value goods, and to then meet the people purporting to be officers to hand over the goods. Investigating officer, Detective Constable Nichola Lane from King’s Lynn CID, urged for residents to be vigilant to this scam. She said: "We’re urging members of the public, particularly the elderly who are primarily being targeted, to be vigilant to cold calls made on the telephone. "Genuine police officers or staff would never approach residents and ask for cash withdrawals to be made or for people to purchase items on their behalf. "I would ask people with vulnerable relatives, friends or neighbours to make sure they are aware of this type of scam.” Officers have this advice: • Never give out personal information about your bank account to anybody over the phone. • If someone calls claiming to be a police officer, ask for their identification number and police force. Hang up and call 101 using a different phone. If you can’t use a different phone, wait at least five minutes before calling back. A genuine police officer will not mind waiting while you check. • Police and banks will never ask you to give out personal details such as account numbers or PIN numbers. • If you have given out information which could compromise your bank account security in any way, call your bank to cancel your cards as soon as possible. • Never hand over money to someone at the door to be sent off elsewhere. Anyone with concerns about such calls should contact Norfolk Police on the non-emergency number 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress. Alternatively, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL THE REAL AND THE ABSOLUTE

“The aim of the Buddhist life was seen to be the purification of consciousness, by means of moral striving and meditation, and the attaining of the pure state of consciousness, which was the real, and the Absolute”, (the pure state of consciousness is God, a human made perfect). Abstracted from page 242 of the book called Man and his Gods. Buddhists purified themselves so as to be holy and perfect. The same was in the beginning with God’s Buddhist Church as can be seen from Daniel 12:10 where it is written, “Many shall purify themselves, and make themselves white and be refined”. Purifying your heart or conscience by moral striving and meditation makes perfect sense but, the statement at (Hebrews 9:14) where it is said that: ‘Jesus offered Himself without blemish to purify the conscience of others’, makes no sense at all, it is a lie. What makes a person perfect or purified is to live according to the precepts, laws or ways of truth and righteousness, the Jesus story is a horrible, horrible myth. For more secrets see our book THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL, available from crystal Moon Cavern,1 Mount Street, Cromer, a new age spiritual shop and holistic practice, and Grave’s Stores, Briston. Price £4.50. Maurice Gray.

Out of the mouths of babes...

One day, my 4-year-old grandson was playing on the floor and asked me to come sit and play with him. I told him to give me a minute because I had something on my mind and was thinking. He said, “Well, Nana, just bring your thoughts to the floor with me and play!” “What’s a hipster?” asked my four-year-old cousin. “Someone who will wear something just to look different,” I said. “They’ll often buy clothes in thrift shops and wear thick glasses.” “Is Grandma a hipster?” he asked.

When my grandson was 4 or 5, we asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. “I want to be a machine,” he said without hesitation. When we asked him why, he explained, “Well, you can replace the parts in a machine when they wear out.”

Strange but true?

NORMAN LAMB TO BECOME PATRON OF LOCAL CHARITY

Stolen Prosthetic Arm Discovered in a Secondhand Shop Daily Echo, England

Holt & District Dementia Support held a very successful celebration and re-launch event on Friday 1st February to mark its new beginning as a registered charity and to celebrate its achievements to date. The event held at St. Andrew’s meeting room attracted a wide array of people including current volunteers and clients but also representatives from local businesses and other voluntary organisations; members of Holt Medical Practice and the Admiral Nursing service plus a number of local people who came to learn about the services the charity offers to those living with dementia. Those attending were able to see displays about the work of the charity and to hear about its services, whilst enjoying refreshments and an opportunity to talk to volunteers about their role. The highlight of the event came with the arrival of local MP, Norman Lamb, who was welcomed to the celebration by the Chair of Holt & District Dementia Support, Claire Roberts, before she went onto announce to those assembled that he had kindly agreed to become the Patron of the charity and to support the work that the charity undertakes. Mr Lamb gave a short speech about the challenge of dementia to society and the importance of ensuring that both statutory services and voluntary services work together to alleviate the difficulties that such families face, including the need to break down social isolation. The event finished with a commitment to the future work of the charity and a call to those that might wish to consider becoming a volunteer. To find out more about becoming a volunteer visit their website: www.holtdementiasupport.org.uk or contact Claire Roberts on 01263 713817.

Rita Gee, our President welcomed the members and introduced Professor Tony Stuart from Durham University who gave a talk about The West Runton Mammoth. The first bone of the Mammoth was discovered by Harold and Margaret Herns after a stormy night in December 1990. It was seen in the dark area at the bottom of the cliffs formed from an ancient river bed. The Norfolk Museums Service identified it and more bones were later found. The Mammoth bones date from about 700,000 years ago when Britain was still joined to Europe. Once it became obvious that the site was of major importance, the Norfolk Archaeological Unit undertook excavations in 1995 with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Anglian Water. As well as studying the large bones, studies were made of pollen, flora and fauna remains and small fossils. The landscape of the time consisted of bodies of slow moving fresh water with a good amount of vegetation and woodland. Mammoths from this time were huge and weighed in at 9 to 10 tonnes. This particular Mammoth had a severely damaged knee which probably meant it could not get about and feed properly. It must have headed into the water and died there. There was evidence of its bones having been scattered around and scavenged by hyenas. Members were asked to come up with ideas for an outing in the Autumn and tickets were sold for our next Nor’easter event to be held in the Community Centre in May. Caroline Purkiss, our Secretary, gave out voting slips for the 2019 NFWI board which have to be returned next month. Our next meeting is on March 20th. HOLT TOWN COUNCIL ENTERS A NEW ERA!

Holt Town Council are delighted to announce the purchase of Nelson House. After many long months of negotiation and discussions the sale went through last Friday, 1 March 2019. Cllr Maggie Prior, Mayor, said she was delighted with the purchase and is looking forward to the Town Council office becoming a central point of Holt Town Centre. “It is positively wonderful to see this project come to fruition and a huge thank you must be given to our Clerk, Elaine Oliver. Without her work ethic, dedication, extensive skills-set and sheer determined loyalty to Holt, this would not have been possible.” The Tourist Information Centre will also move into Nelson House and be operated, by Holt Town Council, from 1 April 2019. Cllr Richard Neech, Deputy Mayor reported this is an exciting time for the Town Council and Holt, a beautiful building has been restored to its former glory to become a suitable base for the Town Council and the Tourist Information Centre.

That’s Life

A passenger in a taxi tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him something. The driver screamed and lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus and drove up over the curb, stopping inches from a large window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab. Then the driver quietly said, “Please don’t do that! You scared the daylights out of me.” The passenger, who was also frightened, apologized and said he didn’t realize a tap on the shoulder could startle someone so much—to which the driver replied, “It’s really not your fault. Today is my first day driving a cab. I’ve been driving a hearse for 25 years.”

THE DREAMERS OF DREAMS

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society in Concert Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are delighted to be returning to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 6 April at 7.30pm for their next concert entitled “The Dreamers of Dreams”. The choir, directed by David Ballard, will be performing works by two of the most successful composers at opposite ends of the 20th Century, namely Sir Edward Elgar and John Rutter. Elgar’s The Music Makers is a beautiful ode to those who create music with words by Arthur O’Shaughnessy. The opening lines set the scene “We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams”. Rutter’s popular Requiem is dedicated to his father who had recently died when he completed composing the work in 1985. He combines the traditional Latin text with bible verses in English – notably Psalm 23 “The Lord is My Shepherd” and Psalm 130 “Out of the Deep”. The choir will be joined by soprano soloist Zaira Palumbo who recently graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and is a rising star on the local classical music scene. This concert which will be accompanied by a small chamber ensemble is presented with the greatly appreciated support of Cromer Town Council and Norfolk County Council. Tickets for the concert are available Zaira Palumbo courtesy from Sheringham Little Theatre John Newstead 01263 822347 or online www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com priced £12 (under 18’s free) or £15 on the door. Visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk for more information about the choir.

Council's support for people to remain independent

• Support for carers, via the Council’s provider, Carers Matters • Social prescribing – working with GPs, the Council’s customer service centre and early help hubs, people are signposted to activities provided by voluntary groups • Home-based reablement – Norfolk First Response provides intensive support and assessment, to help people adjust back to independent living at home, including after hospital treatment • Assistive technology, including fall detectors, which currently helps 7,000 households in Norfolk live independently • The 24-hour, free Swifts and Night-owls service, which helps people with urgent, unplanned needs that don’t require the emergency services – the service takes around 14,000 calls per year • TITAN travel training, which helps to give people with learning disabilities the skills and conďŹ dence to use public transport • Information and advice to help people live independently, including an improved Norfolk Community Directory Another report highlights achievements over the last year. These include: • Expanding the home-based reablement service, to support around 7,000 people per year • Launching the accommodation-based reablement service, which provides 40 beds across the county • Creating 47 short-term care beds, for people who are in crisis, or discharged from hospital, to help plan support to enable them to regain independence • A carers’ charter, developed with carers, for carers, holding the council to account for a series of actions • Expansion of the assistive technology service Both reports will be considered by the adult social care committee, which meets at 10am on Monday, 4 March.

The wide range of ways the County Council helps people remain independent for as long as possible is highlighted in a new report. Every day, Norfolk County Council spends ÂŁ1m on adult social care, supporting around 14,000 people. Due to the ageing population and the increasing number of people living with complex needs, the Council has a range of early help and prevention services to stop or delay the onset of major problems. Councillor Bill Borrett, chairman of the adult social care committee, said: “Investing in early help and prevention is a win-win, for the public and for the Council and our NHS partners. “It helps people to live independently for as long as possible and it is more cost-eective for us to tackle issues early. For every ÂŁ1 we invest in the Swifts and Night-owls service, for example, the health and social care system saves at least ÂŁ3.51, by avoiding more complex and costly problems from developing.â€? The Council’s strategy, known as promoting independence, aims to help people to look after themselves; to keep people well and recover their health; and to help them to live with complex health conditions. Examples of the Council’s work include: • Development workers, who support or help create new community groups that can oer support – ranging from dementia friendly lunch clubs to men’s sheds • Backing the national Pub is the Hub scheme, through grants and funding to help pubs become the centre of community life. Examples include the cafĂŠ at the Fox Inn, Garboldisham and the cafĂŠ project at the Three Horseshoes, Warham. The next one – the Lodge Shop - is due to open in North Tuddenham on 12 March.

HOLT UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB

Holt United Football Club was formed at the start of the 1893 season, making it one of the oldest clubs still existing in Norfolk. Our Club was formed as a totally amateur Club and remains so to this day. We rely on sponsorships and fund raising for finance which is essential to keep our club alive when so many in the County are folding. . This now being our 125th year we are holding a series of events to celebrate this milestone culminating in a Formal Dinner at The Auden on 27th. April 2019. We aim to have a guest speaker as well as others giving short tales of football. Currently we are seeking former players and club officials to invite them to this function. As part of this event we will be holding a auction in aid of both Club Funds and our chosen Charity, Nelsons Journey, which does such great work for sick young children here in Norfolk. We are seeking help in raising these funds by either donating items that can be auctioned, a monetary contribution or by sponsoring the cost of attending this event. Tickets will be priced at just £35.00 which includes drinks on arrival and a three course dinner and can be obtained by contacting either me as Secretary or any Committee member. If you would like further information please do not hesitate to contact any of us.

No. 256 is the second of our 3 endgame studies, and the fifth in our Inter-Club competition. Even if White goes for Black’s e-Pawn by 1.Re6, Black appears to have an easy win by 1… RA8 and going after White’s own g-Pawn with his Rook; nevertheless, White can establish a blockade by a stalemate resource and one of two tempo-gaining variations at move 2. Broadland Chess Club

This month we have two excellent reports to make as BCC continues to provide a strong showing in both national and local tournaments The Sheringham Junior Chess Congress was held on Saturday 9th February and members of Broadland chess club featured prominently among the prize-winners. In the under-13 section, Benedict Ward finished 3rd - his third consecutive podium finish! In the under-10 section, Jacob Davison and George Hall finished 1st=. Jacob won the tournament trophy on sum of progressive scores and George won the North Norfolk Primary Schools' trophy on relative grading performance. In the under-8 section, Ruby Perry was 2nd, Django Stephanides-Price was 3rd and George Artherton won a medal as the top u-7. The tournament is part of the Norfolk Junior Grand Prix and four Broadland players are currently in the top ten: Benjie Perry is 4th, Benedict Ward is 6th, Ruby Perry is 9th and Jacob Davison is 10th. The next tournament in the GP will be in Norwich in March. Four senior members travelled to the University of Birmingham by a variety of modes of transport, Gerald by train, Andrew and Ieysaa by car and believe it or not Richard arrived from Belguim via train and foot! However, all this effort was worth it as the team managed to achieve 2nd place in the 20/20 Rapidplay tournament. The picture taken by Roy Hughes shows Gerald Moore proudly displaying the trophy. One of the players in the 20/20 event, fourteen year old Ieysaa bin-Suhayl, played in a tournament in Shropshire in early January and, in the course of five rounds, played not one but two Grand Masters! Impressively, he drew with both elite players. Many congratulations to him. As usual BCC meets at the Kings Head Coltishall, on Monday and Wednesday evenings, the Junior club on Mondays. Anyone who is interested in finding out more or wishing to join can find us on our webpage, or on our facebook /twitter pages. We welcome new members and visitors.

Success for Aylsham Chess Club on the Regional Stage

Four local chess players (David Owen, Jonathan Reeve, Russell Reeve and Heather Enid Wells) have represented Aylsham Chess Club at the EACU (East Anglian Chess Union) 2019 Team Championships, held in Bury St Edmunds. Aylsham competed against much higher ranked teams from Linton (Cambridgeshire), Hertford and Welwyn Garden City (Hertfordshire) in the Team 500 Left to Right - Russell Reeve, Section, for teams with a combined David Owen, Heather Enid grade of up to 500. Despite being Wells and Jonathan Reeve ‘out-graded’, the Aylsham Chess Club team completed the tournament without losing any games and become EACU (East Anglian Chess Union) 2019 Team 500 Champions. Particular credit goes to Heather Enid Wells for scoring maximum points.

New Running Group

We have recently started a running group in Holt. We meet every Wednesday at 6.15pm in The Holt Youth Project car park and go for a 5k run. Any adults who would like to join us would be very welcome. We are not a running club as such, just a bunch of liked minded people who enjoy a social run together. You certainly don't have to be a fast runner. Anybody interested can just come along or join the Holt Running Group Facebook page.

Aylsham Chess Club continues to attract new players to its base at Aylsham Ex-Service and Social Club in Hungate Street, Aylsham. The chess club meets on Monday evenings throughout the Left to Right - Harry McLean and September to June season. If you David Elsey would like to find out more about Aylsham Chess Club please contact David Owen (Aylsham Chess Club Secretary) via e-mail: davidowen364@btinternet.com or Tel: 01263-731327.

ENJOYING THE SUNSHINE WITH BLAKENEY ROWING CLUB

There have been some truly great outings in recent weeks on the sun-dappled waters of Barton Broad. Several people have been introduced to the fun of skiff rowing and have decided to come back for more. There has never been a better time to experience the sport amongst beautiful surroundings in pleasant company. Soon club members and guests will have the unique opportunity to row either on the Broads or from Blakeney Carnser as, for a short time, there will be a skiff kept in each place. The club boats – Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan – now look immaculate `after being scrubbed down and repainted by dedicated teams of club members, or “Crabbers.” The skiffs are ready for a season of social rowing and competition. There will be a full programme of events with races in King’s Lynn, Morston, Blakeney, Essex and London alongside many outings, just for fun, included in the season. You could be part of all this action and enjoyment. You are entitled to three rows before deciding whether to join the club. Coaching, for novice rowers, will always be provided and there is no obligation to compete in any of the races. If you are interested, view some great photographs on the web site at crablakeney.wordpress.com to see the “Crabbers” on the water. Then contact Tom, the club captain, on 01263 – 761570 to arrange an outing. All levels of rowing experience and ability will be very welcome. Don’t hesitate. Contact Blakeney Rowing Club today. Barry Howes.

A Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable

Don’t mention the war! by Leslie Kinsley There was a lot of black market stuff going on. The farmers were the worst at this as they had plenty of opportunity. My boss was taking a large basket of eggs to Norwich but he was stopped by the police at Horsford. He pretended he was taking them to the hospital so he got away without going to court, but of course he didn’t get to sell his eggs! Another farmer killed bullocks to sell on the black market, keeping them out of sight of inspectors by using a winch to hide them up in the barn rafters. Raising ducks in isolated pits was another way of getting off ration meat. It was hard to get extra feed for them and one local farmer made extra money by selling corn with added sand. This made him very unpopular with customers, but they could not report him! Of course every family had a pig in the garden. We even got extra coupons for its feed. We all raised extra pigs to sell for cash, and even the local bobby joined in that little bit of mischief. My boss came up to me one day, and informed me that he had written for permission to keep me out of being called up into the army. I was furious but it was too late, and I had to stay on the farm. I suspect my parents were happy about this though.

Norfolk Life

New Lib Dem Candidate Selected for May Election

by Richard Shepheard.

In the great kitchen at Holkham Hall there is a portrait of Thomas William Coke (1754 - 1842) Coke of Norfolk as he is affectionately known in the county. The great agriculturalist is attended by several little brown and white spaniels. There is a story behind this painting of Coke. As the country's first commoner and a Whig MP, he had a place at the court of George III. But, having little respect for his Majesty, attended court in his country dress of a farmer. To celebrate this, he commissioned the great portrait painter, Thomas Gainsborough, to commemorate the event. But what of the little spaniels which accompany Coke in this masterpiece, however? There can be little doubt that they are springer spaniels, or, as the old books on dogs call them, the Norfolk spaniel. * Holkham was renowned for migratory woodcock and one of Coke's guests, Sir Francis Chantry, the renowned sculptor, once killed two with one shot! He made a sculpture depicting the two birds, and Holkham named the place of his feat as Chantry Hills! Woodcock demanded a small spaniel to flush them from close cover and it was to meet this necessity that the cocker (i.e woodcocker) spaniel was developed. It was to come in black, golden, black-and-white and blue roan, though not in liver and white, the commonest colour of the springer or Norfolk spaniel. Almost two centuries on, the working cocker went into a decline. In the nineteen-sixties prizes at field trials for cockers were withheld because of the low standard of their performances. A decade later and a transformation had taken place. Cockers were winning trials again and holding their own against springers. Their characteristic burrowing action-like a stoat through a woodpile-was once more on sight. There was only one change, however. A new colour appeared, new to the cocker, that is. This was the liver and white of the springer, or Norfolk spaniel! * Such as early editions of The Observers' Book of Dogs.

A new prospective candidate has been selected by the Liberal Democrats for the forthcoming District Council elections for the Holt Ward in May. His name is Lyndon Swift and he is joint landlord of The Ship Inn, Weybourne. Lyndon, 50, has lived most of his life in North Norfolk, he moved to Sheringham aged 3, attending Sheringham Infant School and Junior School. He moved away to Essex for a while then back to Sheringham at 16, before joining the Merchant navy. He has lived in Weybourne for the past 22 years and has been at The Ship Inn for the last 6 years. Lyndon is an active member of the community, serving on the local Parish Council, and is passionate about issues affecting local people. Among the issues he feels strongly about is the lack of social housing in the area, providing opportunities for young people trying to find work, provision of recreational facilities for children and young people and wants to ensure the elderly are properly supported in the community. He also lists provision of adequate car parking in Holt, planning enough infrastructure along with new housing development in the area and improving transport links. “I am looking forward to treading the streets of Holt, meeting people and finding out how we can make our fantastic area a better place to live in. When Lyndon is not serving drinks, ensuring the local elderly get their fish and chips delivered on a Friday night and getting to grips with his new role, he enjoys keeping fit and walking his two dogs.
