Treasure returns to Norfolk:

Prestigious Award for Holt Rotarian

Three items from the famous Snettisham find on display Snettisham Treasure, in King’s Lynn discovered near the village in north west Norfolk, are going on show at Lynn Museum for the first time. On loan from the British Museum, two gold torcs (neck rings) are now on display, along with a composite object made of copper alloy. The Snettisham Treasure can be viewed until Photo courtesy of the British Museum August 18. Museum Curator Oliver Bone said: “I am delighted that we have the opportunity to display these beautiful and important items so close to where they were found for the first time. It’s incredible to think they were made, used and buried more than two thousand years ago. These precious artefacts connect us with our ancestors and their way of life from all that time ago.” Councillor Margaret Dewsbury, Chairman of Norfolk County Council’s Communities Committee, said: “It’s wonderful that these items can be seen in the county. Admission to Lynn Museum is free until the end of March so the display is truly accessible to everyone.” Julia Farley, Curator at the British Museum, said: "I'm so excited that some of the Snettisham torcs will be going on display close to their findspot for the very first time. It's always a pleasure to share the British Museum collection with new audiences, and I hope that people will enjoy the chance to see these beautiful objects at Kings Lynn Museum." The Snettisham Treasure is the largest assemblage of Iron Age bronze, silver and gold objects found in Europe. It consists of a number of separately buried hoards containing torcs (neck rings), coins, ingots and other objects. The torcs are the most striking feature of this treasure. Torcs have been retrieved from Iron Age sites across Britain, but more have been found in Norfolk than in any other county. In November 1948 a field near Snettisham was being deep ploughed for the first time. It was during this process that farm worker, Raymond Williamson’s ploughshare uncovered a large metal object. Assuming that it was part of an old brass bedstead, he placed it on the edge of the field where it lay for several days. Experts from Norwich Castle Museum were only contacted after more artefacts were uncovered. They immediately identified them as Iron Age torcs made from gold. Williamson’s discoveries had already become known as the Snettisham Treasure when two years later ploughman Tom Rout unearthed another torc. This torc was massive – a whole kilogram of expertly-crafted gold. Now known as the Great Torc, it is on permanent display at the British Museum in London. Over subsequent decades, a dozen or so major finds were made in the area.

On Saturday evening, 9 March, the Dining Room, of the Pheasant Hotel, Kelling, was the venue for the 62nd Charter Night of Holt Rotary Club hosted by President Terry Sands. Keith Skipper, local writer and Norfolk mardler, was the main speaker, and David Simpson, the Rotary District Governor, reflected on the achievements of Holt Rotarians during this past year. Mick Elsom, Secretary of Holt Rotary, had the biggest surprise of the night when he received the highest award in Rotary, the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. It is given to a Rotarian that has made an outstanding contribution to the community or club. Mick Elsom’s presentation was especially memorable since it was his second such award during his many years in Rotary. Terrry Sands commented: “To be awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship is a real honour. For a Rotarian to gather another during his time of service is a real distinction!” There was no comment from Mick Elsom - he was lost for words.

STRANGE HISTORICAL FACTS

Roman Emperor Gaius, also known as Caligula, made one of his favourite horses a senator. Albert Einstein could have been president of Israel when it was formed, but he declined. While Pope Gregory IX was in power, he declared that cats were to be associated with devil worship and had them exterminated in droves. It’s believed that the disappearance of those cats helped rats spread the bubonic plague, or Black Death, that killed hundreds of millions of people in the 1300s. During the Great Depression, people often made clothes out of potato sacks. Seeing this, distributors made their sacks more colourful to help people remain at least somewhat fashionable. The shortest war in history was the Anglo-Zanzibar War. It lasted just 38 minutes.

Voting in the May District Council Elections: I ask all young women to honour the sacrifices women endured to get them and me the right to vote by registering to vote and using it. Kickstart Moped Scheme: Our young people in rural areas often struggle without transport and this scheme offers then help to access post 16 education, training, apprenticeships or employment. The rural scheme provides a discounted scheme for young people ‘Not in Education or Employment’ and can be found on: https://www.kickstartmopeds.org.uk/kickstart-moped-scheme Changes to District Wards and County Divisions: The process regarding district wards is complete and the changes will take place in line with the May District Council Elections. Discussions have now commenced as to how the county council divisions should be re-figured and such changes will the take place in line with the county council elections in May 2021. Until then the parishes in the Wells Division will remain as shown at the end of this newsletter. Parking Infringements: Easter approaches along with the understandable complaints from bus drivers about inconsiderate parking making a mockery of their timetable and from residents who struggle to leave their own driveway as a result of cars overlapping their exit. Send your complaints to parking.operations@west-norfolk.gov.uk with as much information as possible such as time/day of week, location etc; one or two For only photographs can help. Proposed Changes to Wells Parking Restrictions: The process continues and I am sure no one who supported the proposals or objected (excluding Court Fees) would want such an important process to be rushed. Unfolding disaster in Malawi

Cyclones have ripped through southern Malawi during the past few days, leaving homes, crops and infrastructure devastated. Malawi’s President has declared a “state of disasterâ€?, and brought in the military to assist those trapped and displaced by the high winds and flooding. Up to now, 28 people have lost their lives, and in our district alone, 5000 households are affected, about 25,000 people are in need of help‌.

Our guys report the local loss of many houses, outside kitchens & toilets, and other essential buildings. Precious food reserves have been swept away in dirty water, and critically, crops almost ready for harvest, have been smashed down. The need is for safe shelter, water purification materials, and especially food. Even before this disaster, our area was precariously balanced on the edge of acute hunger, desperate for the next maize harvest to release food back into the communities.

There are immediate needs—temporary shelter, food, clean water, and access to medical help—but what follows in future months will be the gradual rebuilding of a society already stressed by poverty and lack. We're working on emergency food and other items, but one of the chief concerns is disease spreading as so many toilets have been lost. Not a glamorous subject perhaps, but we want to begin by digging new latrines and providing a privacy shelter for hundreds at risk. We'll be looking at other issues, but just at the moment, this is an urgent project that we need your help with.

Each simple toilet unit - 3m-deep pit, covered, housed within a bamboo-framed "hut" for privacy, with roof lined with plastic sheeting, and walls/roof covered with grass provided by the beneficiary - would replace a collapsed facility at the home of a vulnerable family. Each would cost just ÂŁ19.75 and would be expected to last at least a few years, thus greatly reducing the risk of life-threatening disease. Could you help?

£12.7m road improvement schemes nearing completion

Joanne Medler Hypnotherapy

Since Norfolk received an additional £12.694m roads funding late last year 125,000m2 of worn out highway surface has been removed and replaced with 26,600 tonnes of brand new asphalt. Half the extra funding has been used on 35 resurfacing projects to improve the condition of roads right across Norfolk with the rest being spent on patching and filling potholes, as well as surface dressing, and repairs to drainage and road signs. The last few schemes are being completed over the next few weeks as the money came with the requirement that it was spent on work to be done before the end of the financial year. In November 2018 Norfolk received the extra money from the Government to spend on road maintenance. This was the county’s share of the £420m, made available to local authorities in England, announced in the Budget on 29 October 2018. This funding was in addition to the £33.4m that Norfolk County Council had budgeted for highway maintenance in 2018/19 and meant that much more work could be carried out than initially planned. Cllr Martin Wilby, Chairman of the Environment, Development and Transport Committee, said: “I want to thank highway teams for all their hard work over the past months as this extra money more than doubled the number of resurfacing schemes we could carry out this year. “Fixing and preventing potholes is always a priority so resurfacing schemes have featured heavily in our spending. The first of our additional schemes to get underway was resurfacing on the A1101 in Emneth at the start of December. We are now on track to complete the 35th and last scheme at Southery on 30 March 2019.” “A big focus for the spending was our Fen roads in West Norfolk so we have spent £2.4m there as these routes were particularly badly affected by both the summer heatwave and the Beast from the East last year.” The single most expensive scheme been the resurfacing on the B1145 Rougham, costing £484,000. All the work was planned to minimise disruption, with two large resurfacing schemes carried out night on the busy A1067 at Guist and B1150 at Westwick. Two of the most complex schemes were the resurfacing of roads in Holt and Sheringham town centres and even though considerable prior consultation and planning was required the Sheringham scheme was finished on time and the Holt scheme came in ahead of schedule.

Maasai Message

On Saturday 16th March, Gresham’s School was delighted to welcome Mako, a member of the Maasai tribe in Kenya, where he works for Cottar’s 1920’s safari camp, to speak at the Senior School Chapel service. On his first visit to England, he was unfazed by the nearly 500 expectant faces, as he burst into Maasai song for Peace – this he felt, having learned about Brexit the night before, was much required. He thanked the school for the support and friendship that they have given to Olpalagilagi School, Kenya, which has been visited by groups of Gresham’s pupils for the past seven years. He imparted two invaluable pieces of advice to all present – ‘be grateful for all that your parents sacrifice for you’ and ‘always look forward and be happy’.

WEYBOURNE WI LEARN ABOUT THE BETHNAL GREEN DISASTER

HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUB

At the March meeting of Weybourne WI, Susan Parry spoke about this tragic event. During WW2, the station was used as a bomb shelter. It had 5,000 bunks and could accommodate 7,000 people. On 3rd March 1943, an air raid siren sounded at 18.17 pm. At 8.27 pm, a nearby anti-aircraft battery fired 60 rockets. The sound caused panic and a crowd of 1,500 people surged down the station steps. A woman with a small child slipped and fell and a human

At our March meeting, we enjoyed a very interesting talk about hedgehogs by Jan Smith of the RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre, who care not only for hedgehogs, but also all sorts of animals and birds in distress. They often have to find new homes for hedgehogs and Jan explained that the young animals are usually happy wherever they are taken, but the older hedgehogs have to be taken back as closely as possible to their familiar environment. Litters of around five are born in the spring, each weighing only 7 to 19 grams. After eight weeks eating slugs, snails and worms, they weigh 350 grams and are independent. A fully grown hedgehog weighs about 600 grams and needs to eat 200 grams of food each day, sometimes travelling half a mile in a night to find it. They are very much nocturnal animals and, in the winter, they hibernate, usually from November to March. Life has become difficult for hedgehogs in recent years and it is estimated that, in this country, only about 750,000 remain. In the countryside they need hedges and woodland (but not conifers). Solid garden boundaries restrict their foraging. Ponds and drains are a hazard for them, as are bonfires and strimming. If you do find one in your garden, don't feed them with bread or milk, which are not good for them, but offer meaty dog or cat food (no fish). If you want to pick up a hedgehog, be sure to wear stout gardening gloves! Against Cuts in North Norfolk

domino effect began. An off duty police officer arrived at the scene, assessed the scale of events and sent a message for help. Despite heroic efforts, 173 people died and 90 more were injured. It was the greatest single loss of civilian life in WW2 and it later transpired there was no air raid on the East End that night. Winston Churchill banned media coverage of the event, as considered it would be bad for public morale. There was a huge ‘cover up’ about what had actually happened, but soon after the tragedy, handrails were installed and the steps were painted white. Susan had taken a particular interest in one person who died that night, Sarah Taylor, and had researched her family history. Sarah’s daughter also died. In conclusion, Susan talked about her membership of the White Chapel Society and their involvement with the Stairway to Heaven Memorial Trust. After many years of fund raising, a memorial has been erected to those who lost their lives. The vote of thanks was given by Celia Howe.

Appalling Behaviour

Dear Jo, On Thursday 14th March at approximately 09:45am our car, a black Ford Mondeo, which was parked in a space outside Tilley & Grace in Holt and was hit by a white vehicle whilst we were unloading items into the EACH charity shop. We were only parked for approximately 20 minutes. In this time, some inconsiderate person hit our car, leaving white paint and a dent in the driver side rear door. Thankfully our toddler, who is usually sat behind that door, was not in the car. No contact details left. No courtesy whatsoever. A great shame they have seemingly got away with it and will probably do it again to someone else. Appalling behaviour. Rachel Williamson

Budgens Post Office

Dear Jo, Last Saturday after a long day emptying and counting the contents of collecting boxes for the Children’s Society we were left with an enormous amount of small change, all of which had to be paid into the bank. Unfortunately, there are no banks open on a Saturday afternoon. So, nothing daunted, I went into Budgens to see if the Post Office could help out. ‘Certainly’ said the girl behind the counter. So, I got a trolley and took the whole lot in, handed it over the counter and after weighing it to check that it was accurately entered on the paying in slip, I was given a receipt left the shop. All in all, it was a fantastic experience and all I can say is a heartfelt THANKYOU for the calm and friendly way I was dealt with. (If the Post Office hadn’t taken the money I would had had to wait until Monday and got someone to help me get it into Barclay’s and it was much too heavy to lift.) Thank you Budgens Post Office. Theo Crowder

Thank You

Philip High and Ruth Woodhouse Philip and Ruth’s family thank so many for the overwhelming messages of love, support, cards and flowers received after the sad and unexpected loss of two very precious and special members of their

family within one week. Our thanks also for the compassionate medical care shown to Ruth during her illness. Generous donations of over £1620 have been forwarded to Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of Ruth, and further generous donations of over £1300 have been forwarded to East Anglian Air Ambulance together with over £630 to St. Andrew’s Church Holt in memory of Philip. Our sincere thanks for all the continuing support. Julie High.

Thank You

Dear Jo, Thank you to everyone who supported our Jumble Sale at Holt Church Hall, on Saturday 2nd February. Confusion

Dear Jo, Are Maurice Gray and Cedric Lytton confused? The former seems to think "Christianity is Buddhism" and the latter that the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita is also Buddhist. The Koran does not proclaim the Golden Rule (Leviticus 19.18; Matthew 7.12). Both the Sanskrit and Arabic scriptures, like the Hebrew Tanakh (roughly = Old Testament) celebrate warfare. I myself was finally deterred from becoming a Christian, precisely because of devastating criticisms of the New Testament by its own "ministers and Biblical scholars". And what is "sweet and reasonable" about disbelievers in "the Holy Trinity" forfeiting their souls when One of Them comes back "with his holy angels" (Mark 8.38) and condemns atheists to inescapable eternal torture? Maurice Gray advertises his personal revelation of the True Faith, and Cedric Lytton recommends a "channelled" spiritualist fantasy about the Other Side. Why choose between them -- or the Aquarian Gospel, Book of Mormon, Isis Unveiled, Urantia, Dianetics, Kitab-i-Aqdas, Aradia, etc., etc.? David Ashton

Fairtrade Sheringham

Apology from the Editor

Dear Jo, Fairtrade for Sheringham would like to thank everyone who supported the two 'Big Brew' coffee mornings during Fairtrade Fortnight as we celebrated 40 years of the Traidcraft Family. As a result of the 2 events a total of £313.70 will be sent to the charity Traidcraft Exchange. In addition, a further £123.30 of goods were sold on the Fairtrade stalls. Traidcraft Exchange continue to support people in many countries to earn more from their hard work so that they are better able to protect their families from the harsh effects of poverty. We would like to thank and acknowledge the support given by both Tesco Sheringham and Sainsbury Sheringham for generous donations of Fairtrade 07949 872200 goods. Barbara George on behalf of Fairtrade for Sheringham.

Letters page issue 421. Letter from Cedric Lytton, should have read:

Holt Playing Field Association

Dear Jo, 100,000.00 is on offer to Holt for any project that improves the lives of residents of Holt and helps Holt to flourish. We at HPFA would like to improve our car park and let people park during the week, this in turn would help us with overflow parking problems we do have on some Sundays and busy days. We were contacted by the Town Council and Chamber of Trade about a park and walk scheme they were thinking of setting up around the Town. This would be free parking for workers to park safely and walk into Town, freeing up spaces for visitors and shoppers nearer the town centre. Workers could park at our site and walk into town, which is 400m shorter than from Kelling/Cromer Road where cars park now and are a problem to other traffic. We had agreed a scheme with the Town Council and they had applied and been given grant money for this scheme. The town council had asked for 20/30 spaces on our car park and we had asked for improvements to the car park layout increasing our parking spaces by30/50 spaces. This we thought was a win/win for all. We get a bigger and better car park, Woodfield Estate would not have so many cars parked out on the road on Sundays and busy days and, the Town would gain parking spaces. However a resident of Woodfield has written to Fields in Trust (formerly National Playing Fields) our governing body and they have advised us that we cannot let our car park for this scheme even though it will be free of charge to those parking. Without this scheme we will not get the grant money and will be unable to improve our car park to try to avoid people parking on the road at busy times. We do try to live and work with our neighbours to the best of our ability but being a charity we do not have money for major projects. I don't understand why if some of you have concerns you do not come and speak to us first we may not always agree but at least you would have the full facts before taking the matter to others. We meet on the 3rd Monday of each month at the club house at 7pm or our e mail contact is holtplayingfield@yahoo.co.uk Paul Sanders chairman Holt Playing Field Association

Dear friends, As we journey towards Easter so we accompany Jesus as he makes his journey to the holy city of Jerusalem, which like our cities today was divided on religious, political and economic terms. Approching the city the gospels tell us that Jesus weeps over Jersualem. He laments over a generation, who, in his mind, have turned their back on God. He longs to gather the people of Jerusalem together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings in order to project them, yet the love of God he had revealed had been rejected. If Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem how much more must he weep over the world today? How must he weep over the loss of life in Christ Church, New Zealand? How must he lament the all too apparent inhumanity of the human race which finds expression in unimaginable and despicable acts of violence, torture, abuse, persecution? How must he despair at the intolerable and vile hatred spread on social media, the radicalisation of individuals to hold extreme vengeful views? How must he grieve for those who meet their death on the streets of our own cities as a result of knife crime? If Jesus weeps over the world today as he once wept over Jerusalem then how he must long for all of humanity to respond to the open hand of God’s love with love instead of hatred? How he must long for the conversion of people’s hearts and minds to the ways that make for peace and justice. How he must desire to gather all peoples together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings. Yet, just as in his own day humanity continues to turn their back on the God of love and the values of his kingdom in favour of the values of the kingdoms of this world. And just as our Lord weeps over the world knowing that humanity is capable of showing so much love and compassion, so must we learn to lament and weep with him over a world that is deeply divided and hurting and long for something better. This holy season of Lent which we observe is characterised by prayer, fasting, and acts of kindness but it is also a period of self-examination and ultimately repentance. It provides us with opportunities to examine the motives of our hearts and minds and to question what is really important to us and with humble and contrite hearts to lament those things in our lives which fall short of what God requires. Repentance for the things for which we lament is more than being sorry. It involves a change of heart, a change of direction, a turning away from all that is evil and wrong to all that is lovely, beautiful, peaceful, good, and righteousness. Only when individually and collectively as a human race we can learn to do this effectively will we stand a chance of rejecting those things which are contrary to the values of the Kingdom of God and dry not only the tears of those who are currently crying in New Zealand and in our own cities but those of our Lord Jesus himself who continues to weeps over the state of our world today.

Fakenham to be the first location for extra care housing

A new 66-unit extra care housing development for older people based in Fakenham has been awarded funding and planning permission. Norfolk County Council’s Policy and Resources Committee will be asked to approve £212,500 of capital contribution funding for the 2.32 acre extra care site in Fakenham which will be located next to the Fakenham Medical Centre. This investment is match funding in partnership with North Norfolk District Council. Construction of the Living Well Homes could begin as soon as Spring 2019. This is part of the County Council’s £29m capital investment scheme to deliver 3,000 extra homes for older people in Norfolk over the next ten years. Extra care housing (ECH) schemes are made up of flats that are rented or owned by individuals. At present, these homes are available for people over the age of 55 whose current home no longer meets their needs, enabling them to remain independent in their local community. Research has shown that Norfolk requires 2,842 extra care units by 2028. Registered provider Housing 21 will run and manage the scheme comprising 39 two-bedroom flats and 27 one-bedroom flats. Thirty of these units will be for affordable rent with Norfolk County Council and North Norfolk District Council sharing the responsibility for nomination rights. Priority for tenancies will be given to residents of the local district. Andrew Proctor, Leader of Norfolk County Council said: “I am delighted that we are investing in this programme, working closely with developers, housing providers and district, borough and city councils to address future housing demand. “It’s important that we can offer alternatives to residential care enabling people to stay close to their family and friends. Living Well Homes will provide an effective way for people to live independently for longer with the reassurance that, should you need care, this can be provided.” Increasing the provision of extra care housing to match future demand will deliver approximately £4m gross revenue saving per year. Despite a challenging financial environment for Adult Social Services, significant savings have already been made through its Promoting Independence strategy. With preventative initiatives to keep people independent for longer, savings are currently forecast to achieve £0.581m. These include home support and short-term residential support for people discharged from hospital, known as reablement.

We had a very lively meeting in February, when we had a go at Belly dancing! We were given colourful scarves, many with bells on, to wear and the room was filled with laughter and some very interesting moves! Our tutors, Sue and Sharin then gave us a demonstration to show us what we should have looked like! We had an enjoyable walk round Walsingham Abbey to see the beautiful snowdrops, combining it with our lunch group, finishing up at the Black Lion for a warm up and good meal. The walking group also enjoyed a walk around Sheringham Park. Our craft group, by popular demand, made some little felt mice – I say mice, but mine looked a little strange to say the least! Shirley had infinite patience with us, trying to make herself heard above the laughter! They were finished off wearing little tutus and made a very colourful display. Our other groups all continue to be great fun. We will be at the next table top sale again on Saturday 6th April from 9am – 12 noon at the Copeman Centre, with our cake stall. On the Saturday 13th April we will be holding a Nearly New Sale, with refreshments, at the Methodist Hall in Holt, from 11am – 2pm so hope to see you there! If you are interested in joining our lively WI, we meet on the third Tuesday of every month at 7.30 in the main hall of the Copeman Centre, Hall Street, Briston and you would be very welcome to come along to see if it’s for you. Veterans Living with Trauma There is a tendency among some armed forces veterans – men and women – suffering the after effects of trauma to consider the presence of emotional and psychological difficulties as a sign of weakness, something that delays or prevents the pursuit of professional help. It is curious that if a physical injury is caused – say a torn ligament while attempting a half marathon – we do not hear of the body being blamed nor of a refusal to seek medical treatment. If will-power cannot fix a broken ankle why is it any surprise that something as complicated as the mind requires specialist attention when something goes wrong? One explanation of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the mind’s failure to sufficiently process the traumatic incident in its aftermath – to make it bearable. And a trauma insufficiently processed will return in some form and at some time: for example, the flashbacks commonly associated with PTSD. There is the case of a young corporal on operational service leading a patrol. A bomb explodes killing two of his men and seriously injuring a third. He does what he has been trained and expected to do: he is in charge and deals well with the situation, receiving praise from senior officers. Over twenty years later and a couple of weeks before he is due to leave the Army, he has a complete psychological breakdown while shopping outside his base and is later diagnosed with PTSD. (This is a true story albeit with details changed to protect confidentiality.) Recommended initial treatment for PTSD often includes counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitisation and reprogramming (EMDR). All these treatments can be accessed via your NHS GP (the Combat Stress charity can also provide advice and help). If such therapies fail psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a possible next step. Counselling, CBT and psychoanalytic psychotherapy are available at the Holt Consulting Rooms (01263 711712). Peter Rowbrey-Evans MBACP, UKCP-Registered Psychotherapist (07951 015213)

East Anglian Air Ambulance launch 24 mile trek challenge as part of campaign to become 24/7

Easy Quick Flatbreads

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has launched a brand new 24 mile or 24K trek challenge as part of its campaign to become a 24/7 service and is encouraging people who are ready to take on a challenge to sign up. The event, which is called Trek 24, is to be held in North Norfolk and will take place on Sunday 8th September during National Air Ambulance Week. Groups and individual participants will have two exciting challenges to choose from: • A 24 mile route starting south of West Runton and ending at Holkham Hall • A 24k route starting in Cley and ending at Holkham Hall For participants taking part in the 24km route, early bird tickets cost £20 with a minimum sponsorship requirement of £200. For participants taking part in the 24 mile route, early bird tickets cost £25 with a minimum sponsorship requirement of £250. Trekkers will receive a packed lunch, refreshments on route, a glass of bubbly (or soft drink alternative) and a hot meal at the finish line, as well as a medal to celebrate the completion of the challenge. There will be seven ‘uplift stations’ along the way with refreshment stops and cheering squads to keeping trekkers refueled and motivated. Early bird tickets will be available until midnight Sunday 2nd June and are sold on a first come first served basis. Catrina Miller, Events Manager at East Anglian Air Ambulance, said: “We are delighted to officially launch our brand new event Trek 24 in support of our campaign to become a 24/7 service. Currently our operation runs from 7am until midnight, meaning there is a 7 hour gap in air ambulance coverage in the East of England. By extending our flying hours round the clock, we estimate that we could be there for up to 600 more patients every year.” To become a 24/7 service we do however need to raise an additional £1m a year and we have launched Trek 24 to help us work towards achieving this annual target. Whether you want to support our 24/7 mission or just take part in a challenging and fun event, we can guarantee it will be one not to miss!” To book your early bird tickets or for more information visit www.trek-24.co.uk.

7oz Plain flour, or a mix of plain and wholemeal 3 ½ fluid oz hand hot water 1 tablespoon olive oil Seasoning – a little salt and pepper Tsp Herbs such as oregano, thyme or sage (optional) Tsp Poppy Seeds (Optional)

Mix seasoning into flour (and add in herbs or seeds if using) in a deep mixing bowl, and make a well in the centre. Pour in oil, and add water, bringing it together into a ball with a knife. Knead gently until smooth, and cut into 4 pieces. Roll out on a floured surface (they don’t need to be perfectly shaped) until about half the thickness of a pound coin. Heat a griddle pan until hot, and put breads in one at a time, cooking on each side for a couple of minutes – they may puff up a little, and will have dark griddle marks on them. Put onto a plate and cover with a clean cloth to keep warm while you cook the others. Dust with a little sea salt before serving.

RSPB appeals for Norfolk volunteers to help save rare seabird this summer

The RSPB is appealing for volunteers to help protect little terns on the Norfolk coast this summer. The little tern is one of the UK’s rarest seabirds having suffered a serious decline in numbers over the past 30 years. The beaches of East Anglia hold around 30% of the national population of little terns. Each year Norfolk is a stronghold for little terns during the summer months when they nest on the beaches at Winterton-on-Sea, Eccles-on-Sea, Caister and North Denes.

The organisers of the SPRING MARCH FOR CANCER

Yet because these tiny chattering birds nest on the directly on beaches, their nests and chicks are extremely vulnerable to human disturbance, predators and high tides. Thanks to the work of a dedicated team of volunteers during recent years, population numbers on these beaches are increasing, though there is still work to do to secure their future. The RSPB is looking for volunteers to help manage little tern colonies at Winterton-on-Sea and/or Eccles on Sea, with opportunities to also check and monitor the beaches at Caister and North Denes. The charity will train and support volunteers to: • Raise awareness with beach visitors and the public about how and why little terns need our help • Monitor and protect the nests and young during the summer season (April to August) • Take part in other activities such as managing data or attending public events Volunteers do not need expert bird knowledge; but they do need to enjoy communicating with people, be able to negotiate steps down to the beach and walk some distance around the colony and be willing to be outdoors in all weather conditions. Volunteers can choose which activities they would prefer to be involved in and will be able to meet other like-minded people and learn more about conservation in the area.

CHARITIES' Sponsored walk, in aid of Cancer Research UK, on 9th March, wish to thank everyone who took part in any way, in an emotional but memorable day. They would like to thank all the individual sponsors for being so generous with their donations. Blickling Estate, National Trust, looked beautiful in the sun after the storm clouds miraculously rolled away at 11.30, the start of the event. The wind was fierce but it didn't deter the walkers and wheel-chair participants. There was a great feeling of camaraderie, love and joy in doing something positive to try and eradicate this group of diseases. New friendships were made and old ones renewed. Family members and friends travelled from far and wide to unite in one goal of beating cancer. The total raised for Cancer Research UK so far is £4400. Thank you from Angela Hunter and Judith Banks. Laura Holland, local Fundraising Manager for Norfolk said " What a wonderful achievement by the organisers of this event, they worked extremely hard to pull the event together. Their fundraising and those who took part will support vital research into Cancer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them and all those who took part for supporting Cancer Research UK". www.holtchronicle.co.uk

The UK Jewellery Awards is the countries longest-running and most prestigious awards event for the jewellery and watch trade, now in its 27th year. “It’s been another busy year for all the staff at Lanes, so being nominated feels like a wonderful reward for all our hard work. The team were ecstatic when hearing about the nominations, we will be waiting with bated breath to hear the announcement of the winners. We have come a long way since starting with 2 trays of silver rings in 1981 so it would be some achievement!” - Mike Lane, Owner. The ceremony will be held in July at a black tie event at London’s Artillery Garden where the winners will be announced. Lanes keep going from strength to strength, always looking at developing new and innovative ways of improving their customer experience.

Ruth Grindrod brought some of her work to give a presentation to North Norfolk Photographic Society on March 6th. Ruth took early retirement from her career in education to move to Norfolk and to pursue her passion for landscape photography.

More often than not, Ruth chooses coastal scenes for her dramatic images, all produced with subtlety and a style much her own. Get ready for the Great Big Read at Norfolk’s libraries

Readers across Norfolk are being encouraged to rediscover their love of libraries and reading for the Great Big Read 2019 with the help of the World Book Night book list.

The reading promotion for adults launches on 18 March and will run until World Book Night on 23 April. The 23 titles will be available at libraries across the county throughout the month and can be reserved online or at your local library, with some also available as e-books and e-audio.

The list includes crime thrillers, film tie-ins (Juliet Naked and War of the Worlds), some of the best new novels written for young people (The hate u give and Turtles all the way down) and even a book set in Norfolk by the popular crime writer Elly Griffiths (The Chalk Pit).

Readers can add a review or star rating by logging into their online library account once they have read a book. They can also comment, share a selfie with their favourite read or recommend a book to others on the new Norfolk Borrowers Facebook group, or on the Norfolk Libraries Facebook and Twitter accounts, using the hashtags #NorfolkGBR and #WorldBookNight.

Councillor Margaret Dewsbury, Chairman of Communities Committee at Norfolk County Council, said: “We’re hoping for this year’s Great Big Read to be the best and greatest yet, and the list of books is fantastic. It also helps to remind people of the brilliant service delivered by our libraries, and all for free.”

LANGHAM DOME NEWS

Our Spitfire memorial appeal has had a major boost with the start of a Crowd Funding initiative running from early February until early April. At the time of writing thanks to some 60+ generous donors we had generated £5255.00 in pledges, and as some of you may have seen in the local newspaper a very generous offer from an anonymous US donor who is a Spitfire owner has promised to double this. You can find the link to the appeal, the rewards offered, and its latest status at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/langham-dome-spitfire-memorial. Please have a look at the amazing introductory film on the link even if you do not want to pledge - this was made by former Gunthorpe (now Blakeney) resident Barney Broom, and we cannot thank him, his colleague Phillip Mutton and their company Trafalgar Productions enough for their incredibly generous professional support for the appeal. After a very successful pilot project we will start the 2019 season with an iconic selection of eight aircraft prints, “The Langham Dome Aviation Collection”, from local Sheringham based artist Janet Samuel. They will initially be sold in the Dome and Driftwood Gallery in Sheringham, but we hope to have additional outlets later in the year. All profits will support the FoLD charity. The last Lynx included pictures from two of the cards and here are two more. One is the DH84 Dragon which often flies from Langham today, and the other is of a FAA Swordfish - actually the first aircraft (from 819 Sqn) to operate from Langham after it officially opened as an independent unit in July 1942. Planning for the RAF Langham Reunion and Dome Heritage Day on Saturday 1 June 2019 continues to gather pace; although we still await confirmation of our request for Battle of Britain Memorial Flight participation. As usual we plan to have a Grand Draw on the day now with no less than three “equal” aviation related first prizes. One being a glider experience flight for two with the Norfolk Gliding Club at Tibenham, the second a Tiger Moth flight from Langham and the third a helicopter flight from Binham. We will be selling draw tickets from the Dome on opening days. Please contact John Blakeley on 01263 861005 or Patrick Allen on 01328 839348 if you would like some sent to you. If you would like more information on the Dome and how to become a Friend of Langham Dome (where annual membership gives unlimited free admission) or to join us as a volunteer please contact our Dome Manager Val Bowers on 07762 205578 or e-mail: val@langhamdome.org. Successful prosecution by NNDC

Two firms have pleaded guilty to failing to discharge their general health, safety and welfare duty after a swimmer was pulled unconscious from a pool two years ago. Following an incident at the swimming pool at Woodland Holiday Park at Cromer Road, Trimingham, in March 2017, in which a swimmer got into difficulty and was under the water for more than five minutes before being rescued by other swimmers, North Norfolk District Council conducted an investigation. The swimmer was hospitalised but made a good recovery, despite the time for which he was under water. Woodlands Caravan Site (Trimingham) Ltd, the company which operated and managed the pool, was charged with breach of the duty it owed to do so in such a way as to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, that swimmers there were not exposed to the risks of drowning between 12 March 2015 and 1 April 2017. Alan Baugh, a safety consultant from Great Yarmouth, trading as Foley and Baugh Associates, provided health and safety consultancy and advice services to Woodlands Caravan Site (Trimingham) Ltd. He was charged with breach of the duty he owed to do so in such a way as to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, that swimmers at the pool were not exposed to the risks of drowning between 1 December 2015 and 1 April 2017. Both charges were breaches of duties under section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, contrary to section 33(1)(a) of that Act. Each defendant today entered a guilty plea. Sentencing was adjourned. “Any swimmer, however experienced, may get into difficulty, and pool operators' pool supervision arrangements must be sufficient for the circumstances of their pools. “This prosecution shows how seriously North Norfolk District Council will treat incidents where standards have not been met.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios celebrates its 25th year in 2019

One of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary this year with more than 430 artists flinging open their studio doors to the public. The 16-day celebration of Norfolk’s artistic community runs from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 9 June. The free event will see artists throughout the county opening their doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work and practice. Having established itself as one of the largest open studios schemes in the country, it gives visitors the opportunity to see new art, meet artists, and - with many of the works on display being for sale - to buy original artworks directly from their creators. This year 430 artists will be taking part in the scheme across 250 venues. The event annually attracts thousands of visitors and in 2018 more than 36,000 people flocked to studios across Norfolk. Numerous associated trails take place, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios in one day. Art demonstrations, private views, workshops and talks also make up this key event. Internationally renowned artists as well as artists new to the scheme take part each year. Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2019 will take place between Saturday 25 May and Sunday 9 June 2019. Bigger reuse shops are on the way for Caister and Dereham recycling centres, and Wells and Bergh Apton recycling centres are getting reuse shops for the very first time, thanks to a project starting next week. Cllr Martin Wilby, Chairman of the Environment, Development and Transport committee, said: “Our popular reuse shops help to make sure good quality items are not thrown away and are given a new home instead. Providing new and bigger reuse shops means we can boost the range and number of things people can donate and buy. It’s marvellous to see how popular the shops are and it’s always great fun to have a look to see what bargains you may find.â€? The first step is for the current Caister and Dereham reuse shops to be removed and replaced with bigger shops to reflect the growing popularity of the scheme. The new shops will be twice the current size and have more open plan space for larger items. Larger shops will help to increase the reuse of as many items as possible including sofas, bikes, tools and garden ornaments. Caister and Dereham recycling centres will need to close for a couple of hours each for the new shops to be manoeuvred into place. The new reuse shops will reopen a few days after the installation is completed and the shops have been set up ready to open. And with reuse and recycling at the top of the agenda the shops that are currently at Caister and Dereham will be taken away for refurbishment before they are then installed at their new homes at Bergh Apton and Wells later in the year. In 2017/18 the network of reuse shops made a ÂŁ184,210 contribution towards the ÂŁ6.5m annual cost of Norfolk’s 20 Recycling Centres. In the same year 833 tonnes of items passed through the reuse shops, an increase of 93 tonnes on the previous year. The ÂŁ35,000 improvement scheme will take the total number of reuse shops in the county up to 11. Since April 2018 Norfolk's reuse shops have been donating a proportion of their income to the the current chosen charity, the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Parents and carers of young babies urged to follow safer sleeping advice

Norfolk Safeguarding Children Board, together with Norfolk County Council Public Health and Norfolk Constabulary, is urging parents and carers of young babies to follow safer sleeping advice to help reduce cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). SIDS, formerly known as cot death, is the unexplained death, usually during sleep, of a seemingly healthy baby less than a year old. In 2016, the most recent available year for data, there was an 11%* rise in cases of SIDS in the East of England compared with the previous year. Although the cause of SIDS is not fully understood, there is extensive evidence demonstrating that the risk of SIDS can be significantly reduced by following safer sleeping guidance. Chair of the Norfolk Safeguarding Children Board, David Ashcroft, said: “Data from 2016 shows that there were 21 deaths from SIDS in our region. We’re working with our partners to try to reduce this number by increasing awareness of safer sleeping advice so that people are equipped with the knowledge to sleep their baby more safely. “This latest drive to raise awareness coincides with Safer Sleep Week (11-17 March), The Lullaby Trust’s national awareness campaign. It focuses on two key messages: • The safest place for your baby to sleep for the first six months is in a separate cot or Moses basket in the same room as you, even during the day • You should never share a bed with your baby if: o Either you or your partner smokes (even if you do not smoke in the bedroom) o Either you or your partner has drunk alcohol or taken drugs (including any medication that may make you drowsy) o Your baby was premature (born before 37 weeks) or had a low birth-weight (less than 2.5 kg or 5½ lbs) o You are particularly overtired Dr Louise Smith, Director of Norfolk County Council Public Health, said: “It is important for people to know that there are some circumstances in which sharing a bed with your baby can be very dangerous. Getting into sleep routines can be difficult when you have a new baby or are tired yourself. By following some simple advice, there are things you can do to keep your baby safe while they are sleeping.” Parents, grandparents and carers can find safer sleeping advice at www.justonenorfolk.nhs.uk/safersleep * Office for National Statistics (ONS): All unexplained infant deaths by regions in England, and Wales, 2004 to 2016 (provisional)

Football world supports hospital charity gynae appeal

The football world is supporting an appeal by N&N Hospitals Charity to purchase a piece of equipment which could transform the way some ovarian cancer patients are treated in Norfolk. Former England, West Ham, Chelsea and Liverpool footballer Joe Cole has led the way, speaking of his support for the charity’s gynae VOiCE campaign which supports women going through gynaecological cancers, including vulval, ovarian, cervical and endometrial. In particular, the charity is looking to purchase a piece of equipment which would provide hyperthermic intraperotoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) – this is a hot chemotherapy bath to the abdomen that is given at the end of surgery. This is now performed in many specialist centres in Europe for advanced ovarian cancer, but is not widely available in UK. The campaign has been spearheaded by fundraiser David Giess who has worked in the football industry and whose wife, Anne, is being treated for ovarian cancer at the N&N. Joe Cole urged everyone to support the VOiCE appeal: “My dear friend is currently being treated at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for ovarian cancer. “I have witnessed and been told of the excellent work being carried out by Mr Burbos, Dr Wade and all the team in the Gynaecology and Oncology wards in regards to cancer treatments. “I have donated to the hospital's VOiCE campaign to raise funds for new equipment to help future victims of this awful disease. Please join me in supporting this appeal and give what you can.” www.holtchronicle.co.uk

The hospital charity is holding a prize draw next month with a fantastic line-up of football-related prizes. They include an England shirt signed by Gareth Southgate, Spurs shirt signed by Harry Kane, and signed shirts from Manchester United, Norwich, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, and a West Ham captain Mark Noble match-worn shirt. There is also a signed Jurgen Klopp cap, signed footballs and many more prizes. All funds will go towards the purchase of the HIPEC equipment and other equipment that can help gynaecological patients. Mr Nikos Burbos, Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist, said: "It is always humbling when patients and their families choose to support the hospital charity in what are often difficult times for them. "David and his family have worked incredibly hard to fundraise for the gynae department and, in particular, to enable us to purchase innovative equipment which would otherwise be unavailable to the team. "It is fantastic to hear how Joe Cole and all the football clubs which have donated items are supporting our hospital and our department to benefit the patients we treat and their families." Raffle tickets are available from the hospitals charity by emailing fundraising@nnuh.nhs.uk or will be on sale at The Forum in Norwich on Saturday 23rd March from 10am until 3pm. Around 7,400 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the UK each year and more than 4,100 women die from it each year. March is ovarian cancer awareness month and the N&N are hopes to raise awareness of the cancer which is often known as a “silent killer” because up to 60% of women are diagnosed once the cancer has already spread. More information about ovarian cancer awareness month is available at www.ocam.org.uk

Robotic colorectal surgery project shortlisted for a national award

APPEAL AFTER MAN AND WOMAN ASSAULTED IN FAKENHAM

Police are appealing for witnesses to an assault in Fakenham. It happened shortly after midnight on Sunday 17 March 2019, when the victims, a woman and man aged in their 20s, were assaulted in the Market Place outside the Crown pub. As a result, both victims required medical attention for facial injuries. A woman, aged in her 30s, was arrested in connection with the incident and taken to Aylsham Police Investigation Centre for questioning. She’s subsequently been released under investigation pending further enquiries. Officers are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone who has any information concerning the incident. They’re asked to contact PC Adam Hussey at Fakenham Police Station on 101 quoting reference 36/17954/19. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A pioneering project that is improving care for some colon and rectal cancer patients has been shortlisted for a national award. The team who perform robotic-assisted colorectal surgery at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) have been shortlisted for the Surgical Services Initiative of the Year at the HSJ Value Awards. The Trust was the first hospital in East Anglia to perform minimally invasive colorectal cancer surgery using a robot in October 2017. Since then, the team have carried out 47 robotic assisted colorectal surgeries, which has improved the outcomes for patients and their recovery times. Robotic assisted surgery offers more precision for surgeons, which has helped to reduce the time spent in the hospital following surgery and has reduced readmissions. The colorectal surgery team have also improved theatre capacity at NNUH by using the robot at weekends. Consultant Surgeon Irshad Shaikh said: “We have had fantastic results so far with great clinical outcomes, quicker recovery for patients and we have reduced the length of hospital stay for patients who have received robotic surgery to remove their cancer. We believe our results are some of the best in Europe in a selected group of patients. It is all about teamwork and this was all made possible because we have a dedicated theatre team. The team has consistently helped by giving up their weekends to help cancer patients at NNUH.”

Disadvantaged Norfolk children have poorer life chances, discovers local MP

A Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable

Life on the Farm – part 1.

North Norfolk shows stark difference between top early childhood progress and disappointing results for young people. MP for North Norfolk, Norman Lamb, calls for Social Mobility Summit for Norfolk. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds have a poorer chance of doing well as an adult compared to the national average in Norfolk, a local MP has found. Norman Lamb MP uncovered social mobility data released as part of the SMIC (Social Mobility Index by constituency). The index ranks each of the 533 constituencies in England according to how good the life chances are that they provide disadvantaged children. Just one constituency out of Norfolk’s nine makes the top half of performers – and only just (South Norfolk, ranking at 238th best in the country). Meanwhile, 4 of Norfolk’s 9 constituencies are in the bottom 20% in the country for social mobility. The SMIC also provides a social mobility index based on each life stage: Early Years, School, Youth and Adult. Each stage measures how good life chances are for disadvantaged children at that stage of life. Norman Lamb’s own constituency, North Norfolk, was strikingly ranked in the top 15% of performers for School stage, and in the bottom 15% for Youth stage. Only a handful of other constituencies in England performed in a similar way. Mr Lamb, who labelled the data “both fascinating and disturbing”, has written to the Secretary of State for Education and the head of Norfolk County Council, asking whether they were aware of the divergent figures and how they intend to solve them. He pointed to the Norwich Opportunity Area, a Government-funded scheme, as a source from which best practice could be gathered and subsequently applied to the whole of Norfolk. However, Mr Lamb warned that the Opportunity Area schemes “are hampered by their two-year time limit, which is not enough to overcome the extended causes of the lack of social mobility.” He has called for a Social Mobility Summit in Norfolk to discuss how we can develop a strategy to ensure that Norfolk becomes a leading county for opportunity for children and young people.

My first job was with the farmer who employed my Dad, but there was one thing about this man that I could not take. He swore at everyone. My Dad put up with it but I answered back and punched him! He promptly sacked me as he could not lose face. In fairness though, when another farmer was thinking of taking me on, he told him I was a good worker as long as no-one swore at me.

I won’t give you the name of my next employer as I want to tell you some stories about him later in my tale. It was a large mixed farm and I was one of fourteen workers not counting the girls who worked in the dairy. There were two hundred dairy cows and their milk was either sent out in bottles or else, as in the case of Gresham’s School, in churns. One local butcher did collect milk in churns which he took round Melton Constable to be sold by the jug. As well as doing relief milking, which I did not mind as the milking parlour had a machine, there were many other jobs to do on the fields. The most wearying of these was hoeing sugar beet for weeds and thinning the young plants as they grew. I was very pleased when they started using a special coated seed that did not need thinning. We also grew potatoes, broad beans, cabbages, carrots, barley, wheat and oats. There was also hay and silage grown to feed our stock.

All the work was done by horses, except for ploughing for which there was a tractor. My big goal in life was to get my hands on this tractor. I loved machines and had a talent for understanding how to make them work. It was to stand me in good stead as farming changed. At present however it was hard manual labour and horse work for me. The horses were used for drilling seed, harrowing the ploughed soil, bringing in crops and the muck cart. The oats grown on the farm were for them, and they were put into 12 stone (50 kilo) bags for us to lift. This was the ‘easy ‘ crop as barley 16stone (65 kilo), wheat 18 stone (75 kilo) and finally broad beans 20 stone (80 kilo) bags were all there for lifting, mostly by yours truly! I was one of the biggest and fittest lads on the farm then. All due to my Mother’s good cooking of course!

HOLT UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB

Thursday 18th April - 11.00am, Weybourne, 2 miles. Meet on corner near Weybourne Village Hall car park.

Holt United Football Club was formed at the start of the 1893 season, making it one of the oldest clubs still existing in Norfolk. Our Club was formed as a totally amateur Club and remains so to this day. We rely on sponsorships and fund raising for finance which is essential to keep our club alive when so many in the County are folding. . This now being our 125th year we are holding a series of events to celebrate this milestone culminating in a Formal Dinner at The Auden on 27th. April 2019. We aim to have a guest speaker as well as others giving short tales of football. Currently we are seeking former players and club officials to invite them to this function. As part of this event we will be holding a auction in aid of both Club Funds and our chosen Charity, Nelsons Journey, which does such great work for sick young children here in Norfolk. We are seeking help in raising these funds by either donating items that can be auctioned, a monetary contribution or by sponsoring the cost of attending this event. Tickets will be priced at just £35.00 which includes drinks on arrival and a three course dinner and can be obtained by contacting either me as Secretary or any Committee member. If you would like further information please do not hesitate to contact any of us.

Printed copies of the full Fit Together programme may be collected from Holt Library.

CHESS PROBLEMS by Dr Cedric Lytton 257. A. Chekhover (date not known)

256. White to play and draw

257. White to play and win

Solution to No. 256: 1.Kb1! The white K must hurry over to the K-side, where, as it happens, he won’t need his R: 1… Rh8 2.Rf8! (a deflection sacrifice to gain a tempo) 2…Rxf8 3.Kc1 Rh8! 4. Kd1 K- 5.Ke2 Rh2 6.Kf1 Rh1+ 7. Ke2 with stalemate if the black R stays on the base rank, or 7…Rh2 8.Kf1 K- 9.Kg1, or 1…Kg7 2.Rh6! Kxe6 3.Kc1 Rh8 4.Kd1 as before – another tempo gaining sacrifice. Not 1. Rf5? And if 1… Rh8 2.Rg5 draws, but 1…Kg6! and White has lost his tempo.

No. 257 (the sixth in our Inter-Club competition) is normally a draw on material, but here white has a tactical sequence, keeping the black K on the move for mate or loss of the Queen. Norfolk Life

by Richard Shepheard.

A Wonderful Old Man. Whether we approached it by boat on the River Yare from Whitlingham or on our bicycles from Norwich, one thing is certain, whenever we visited the Rockland New Inn on the Norfolk Broads we never failed to gaze upon the likeness of one of the greatest characters ever to come from the Broads. Two ancient photographs of one man stared down from the wall. This was James "Scientific" Fuller who would have been born in the mid-19th century and died somewhere between the wars. Scientific got his living from wildfowling and fishing on Rockland Broad and so skilled was he that he found his way into the works of authors of renown during and after his lifetime. He appears in W.A. Dutt's The Norfolk Broads 1903 by courtesy of the great Norfolk watercolourist Frank Southgate who pictured him in action in his punt, and posthumously in the works of James Wentworth Day. But how did Fuller get this marvellous soubriquet "Scientific"? Gentleman anglers, who may have had a disappointing day fishing for pike, could visit Scientific who would always produce a specimen fish. Perhaps they bought one and took it home as a memento, but kept schtoom about its provenance mindful of the angler's prayer:

Marathon for Mental Health

Mitch’s link is https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/mitchell-hare

Mitchell Hare (Mitch) is a local man running the London Marathon in aid of MIND charity. He is the live-in guy at The Feathers Hotel and also fits carpets for M.D Williamson in Fakenham during the day. “I've always wanted to do the London Marathon but due to my own poor thinking habits I made excuses, I was a slave to my own addictions (I used to gamble excessively and smoke like a trooper). I've always enjoyed sports and fitness, but I'd never achieved my potential whilst I was thinking and acting in this way. It's taken its time but I'm there and I signed up to do the marathon for MIND as I understand that mental health needs to be talked about and the stigma towards it lessened, I'm raising funds for a good cause whilst I achieve a life goal and all support would be appreciated. I have a raffle in The Feathers with some amazing prizes, it's £2 for a single ticket or £5 for 5. I have prizes from a bungee jump, cinema tickets, tickets to watch Wasps play rugby and a whole lot more.” The draw will be on the eve of the 4th of April. I have to thank The Feathers as they have been fantastic with helping me fundraise, selling glasses and bar runners and the locals have been chipping in. All sponsorship would be appreciated, and he is looking forward to crossing the finish line on April 28th.

"Lord grant that I may catch a fish so big that even I When speaking of it afterwards may have no need to lie."

But Scientific would never elaborate on how he caught monster pike when the sportsmen only caught little jack-pike. He would just say: "I dew et scientific." It was whispered among the locals that his method consisted of suspending live bait from a bundle of sticks (called a 'ligger') on the water with a line to the bank of the broad. It might be almost forty years after these youthful visits to Rockland that I met someone who knew him. Dick Trett, an elder among gamekeepers, who had seen service at Sandringham and at Lord Mountbatten's estate at Broadlands in Hampshire, was a native of Rockland St Mary and, when a youngster, had known Scientific well. "A wonderful old man" he said with fervour. Better still he later produced a beautiful a beautiful photograph of Scientific on the broad, in his punt. There sat the redoubtable figure his jacket buttoned at the neck, his hat turned down at the front as if heading a keen wind. In his hands a double-barrelled duck gun and on his legs leather waders. Needless to say, a copy of this came home with me and when I look at it on my wall I hear his protégé say: "Wonderful old man!" Scientific Fuller is also remembered for upholding the rights of the Rockland villagers to shoot on the broad which endures to the present day. While there are no photographs of him in The New Inn nowadays, there is one of him with a handsome gundog by the staithe.

Sheringham Golf Club Open Day

When, in 1891,the local Upcher family bequeathed the land north of the Weybourne Road for the formation of a golf course, they surely couldn’t of imagined how their generosity could have spawned the thriving golf club that now sits on the west side of the town. Over the past 128 years the course and club house have changed out of all recognition. With this in mind the club have realised that although, geographically, it represents a large part of Sheringham, there are many residents of the town and surrounding areas who have never visited the club. Hence on Sunday 14th April from 10 am-4 pm they are extending a warm welcome to everyone, young and old to experience everything the club can offer. There will opportunities to have a quick lesson with one of the pros and take them on at “The Dartboard Challenge” or just relax in the extensive club house ,that is available for function hire. All this and a free burger thrown in! If you like what you see ,there is an opportunity to join the club with their ”Get into Golf” membership that introduces you to golf at a level that is not so daunting as a full membership. Gather up friends and family and find out what the real Sheringham Golf Club is about. 128 years has been too long! I was sprawled on the living-room couch watching my favorite show on the Food Network when my husband walked in. "Why do you watch those food shows?" he asked. "You don’t even cook." Glaring back at him, I asked, "Then why do you watch football?" The trouble with jogging is that by the time you realize you’re not in shape for it, it’s too far to walk back.
