PROPOSAL UNVEILED FOR £4.15 MILLION CANCER CENTRE AT CROMER HOSPITAL

Macmillan Cancer Support invests £2.2 million to support growing number of people living with cancer in North Norfolk A £4.15million proposal to build a state-of-the-art cancer care and support centre at Cromer and District Hospital has been unveiled today. Macmillan Cancer Support has been working with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop proposals for the centre. In the 2015 local cancer strategy, potential demand for cancer services within the Trust was forecast to increase by over 200% over ten years. Currently most people from the Cromer area have to travel to Norwich for treatment and the new centre will enable more people to access cancer treatment and support closer to home. The building, which will see the refurbishment and extension of a disused ward, will be called the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre. The centre, on the site of the former Davison Unit, will include: • Six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day. • Three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually. • A Macmillan cancer information and support centre. • The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management. A planning application will be submitted later this year and, if granted, the building work is expected to take around a year. The majority of funding for the centre will come from Macmillan Cancer Support, which is providing up to £2.2 million and Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity, which is contributing £1.5million. The remaining £450,000 is coming out of NNUH Trust funds. Gwyneth Tyler, Macmillan Head of Services for South and East England, said: “The number of people living with cancer is growing and predicted to rise from 2.5million today to four million by 2030 . This centre will help to meet the growing need in North Norfolk and enable more people to get treatment and support closer to home. “At Macmillan, we also know that cancer can affect every part of your life, not just your health and that’s why the centre will include a Macmillan Cancer Information & Support Service. “We are delighted to be working with the Trust to improve cancer care for people in North Norfolk but we can only do so thanks to the public’s generous support for Macmillan. As a charity, we are entirely reliant on public donations and need the public’s continued support to enable us to be there for the growing number of people with cancer.” Mark Davies, NNUH Chief Executive, said: “This is an amazing first step in a joint partnership with Macmillan which will deliver clear benefits for our patients. It represents a significant investment for the Trust and the N&N Hospitals Charity, totalling nearly £2million and confirms the importance of Cromer Hospital in our plans to increase capacity. “Working together on this new development with Macmillan is an important part of our cancer strategy to expand services and meet the needs of patients living in this rural county.” Professor Erika Denton, NNUH Medical Director, said: “Our cancer centre is one of the largest in the UK, treating 6,000 patients each year. We deliver a range of specialist services across Norfolk and further afield. Although patients will still need to come to Norwich for some of their appointments, this is a fantastic opportunity to deliver more care closer to people’s homes and reduce the number of journeys to Norwich.”

County Council News from County Councillor Sarah Butikofer

sarah.butikofer.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk or 07968 897235

I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that the highways engineers have been in hibernation over winter and are now trying to make up for lost time! Almost every journey you take in North Norfolk at the moment you come across diversions or traffic controls. However, I am sure we will all be pleased when the works are completed; certainly the team seem to have done an excellent job resurfacing Holt town centre. The planned changes to highways works in Weybourne that I feel like we have been waiting forever for, are now scheduled to start at the end of this month. They will provide a much safer path for pedestrians walking between the holiday accommodation and village. I am also delighted to announce that part of my highways budget this year has gone towards purchasing another SAM2 speed awareness sign. This will be used in some of the smaller villages in Holt division who are still very much affected by speeding motorists, but who cannot afford their own machine on their precepts. Finally on the highways theme, I have written again and again asking for safety on the new roundabout on the bypass to be reviewed. If the money that has been spent on repairs had been spent in the design in the first place………. It’s now almost exactly a year since the County Council introduced charges for some items at its recycling centres. Recent figures show that overall numbers of visitors to centres are down and so is the tonnage deposited, so just where is this waste going? We will be asking for further details about these figures at the forthcoming meeting of Full Council. For only Last but by no means least, I will be bringing a motion to the next meeting of the County Council to ask for a review of the changes to our bus services across the County. Constant cuts to bus services are making it (excluding Court Fees) harder for residents to access shops, schools, doctors and hospital appointments, and have a huge impact on the daily lives of the most vulnerable in our rural communities leading to even greater rural For Office or Home Visits Call 01263 579327 isolation. Free bus passes for our older population are a great idea but it A S WILLS, Danum House, Overstrand, Norfolk assumes there will be buses to ride on. More on this next time…. As always if you are affected by any of the issues I have mentioned above, or if there are any other concerns you would like to raise with me please do get in touch.

Can you help a child fulfil their true potential?

KELLING PROBUS CLUB MARCH MEETING 2019

We met as usual this month at the 'Dales Hotel' Upper Sheringham on this occasion for our Annual General Meeting. A delicious lunch was enjoyed by seventeen members and the usual fellowship and friendly banter made it even more enjoyable. After the meal chairman Mike Clayton called us to order and we approved the minutes of the 2018 A.G.M. Treasurer Tony O'Shea reported that the clubs finances were sound and that no increase in subs was needed. Secretary Ken Murray gave a report on a very successful year with some excellent speakers and the usual quality of cuisine being maintained. Chairman Mike thanked both the committee and members for supporting him throughout his year, he had enjoyed being in the chair. He stressed that the club would not be a success unless we were able to recruit new members as inevitably we lose a couple of members most years. Next came election of officers Chairman ..Andrew Hyatt. Vice chair John Whittington. Treasurer to be David Coslett. Secretary Ken Murray. All those nominated were agreed by members. Mike then installed Andrew Hyatt as chairman for 2019/20. Andrew thanked Mike for an excellent enjoyable year and particularly praised the way he had lead the club.Andrew said that he hoped that the coming year would be just as good and promised to keep things much as they have been. It was announced that the speaker next month would be the Harbour Master of Wells next the Sea. Kelling Probus Club meets on the third Thursday of each month at The Dales Hotel 12.30 for lunch at 1.00p.m Any retired or semi retired gentlemen are welcome. For more information visit our website Kelling Probus Club or contact John Whittington on 01263 820333.

Are you the kind of individual who can help care for a child that isn’t their own? Someone who can put a roof over their heads, food on their plates, and hope in their hearts?

There are hundreds of children seeking a foster home in Norfolk. All of them need someone they can talk to and trust, someone who appreciates them as individuals and is prepared to celebrate their achievements and successes with them.

Our Foster Carer Ambassadors can help you step up The fact is, you don’t need a special skill set to become an exceptional foster carer. What you will need are qualities such as patience, understanding and, let’s be honest, a sense of humour. When it comes to age or status or whether you’re retired or working you could still foster.

Whatever your walk of life, our team of Foster Carer Ambassadors can help you step up and lead you through the process. Our Skills to Foster training programme will provide you with all the need-to-know essentials, while your recruiting social worker will always be on hand to help, advise and offer invaluable pearls of wisdom.

Becoming a foster carer often turns out to be just as rewarding for you as it is for a child. In most instances, it’s you who holds the key to unlocking a child’s true potential and watching a child mature and blossom is alife-changing, and life-affirming, experience.

“The children may be feeling lost, upset, angry, confused or sad. They need a home and an adult who will care for them – and bring some joy into their lives. Our foster carers often tell us that becoming a foster carer has been the most rewarding experience of their lives and they have lots of inspiring fostering stories to share. Tracy Collins, Interim Head of Fostering of Norfolk County Council’s Fostering Service

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB

As we have now collected all the money raised at the Mannington Hall Fun Day last year and with the ongoing help from by ten other Lions Clubs in Norfolk we have now reached our target and are now going to present a cheque for £6,500 to the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital. This is the total of our joint fundraising over the last eighteen months to purchase a portable ECG machine for the Hospital. On the 4th April at 6.30 pm we will be presenting the cheque. We are still helping other local charities and in this fundraising year under the current president we will furnish a new Parents’ Room at the Jenny Lind. Parents of very sick children need a quiet, comfortable space of their own in which to relax at a time of very great stress and often sadness. A huge thank you to Nelson Quilters who have made over twenty small quilts for us for children’s beds and incubators, we are extremely grateful for their generosity. Liz Bowler Press Officer Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

If you’d like to make a positive difference to a child’s life, as well as your own, why not find out more about becoming a foster carer today. Simply call 01603 306649 or visit the Norfolk Fostering Services Facebook page.

Holt Country Park Easter Activities

SCHOOL HOWLERS

In April the picturesque Holt Country Park will host several fun-filled activities for children, run by North Norfolk District Council’s countryside team. A broad range of activities will include: a hungry caterpillar and butterfly toddler trail, an Easter Treasure Hunt and a Woodland Activity day – providing something for every youngster. The first event on the fun-filled calendar is the hungry caterpillar and butterfly toddler trail on Tuesday, April 9. This session is suitable for children aged one to six and will see children walking through the beautiful Holt Country Park while they learn about the lifecycle of a butterfly. This session will run from 10.30am to 12.30pm and cost £3 per child. Parents must accompany children throughout. As Easter draws closer the park will play host to an exciting Easter Treasure Hunt for children of all ages. The hunt on Tuesday, April 16 will see children exploring the ‘jewels of the woods’, focusing on the beautiful creations of nature. In addition to the treasure hunt there will be other fun activities such as Easter themed crafts and face painting. There will be two sessions, one at 10am to 12pm and the other at 1pm to 3pm, both cost £4 per child, with face painting at £1.50. Parents must accompany children throughout. Last but not least, Holt Country Park will be the centre stage for a Woodland Activity Day on Thursday, April 18. For £10 a child, your youngster can leave their parents at home and join our ranger team for a day of fun filled activities in the woods. The children will learn a wide range of useful skills from den building, wildlife identification, survival skills, orienteering and craft making, running from 10am to 2pm. Places are limited and you are encouraged to book early. To book your place on any of these activities go to www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/book.

The Bible is full of interesting caricatures. In the first book of the Bible, Guinessis, Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree. One of their children, Cain, asked, "Am I my brother’s son?" Solomon had three hundred wives and seven hundred porcupines. Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes. He wrote Donkey Hote. The next great author was John Milton. Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained. Soon the Constitution of the United States was adopted to secure domestic hostility. Under the constitution the people enjoyed the right to keep bare arms. In midevil times most people were alliterate. The greatest writer of the futile ages was Chaucer, who wrote many poems and verses and also wrote literature. Queen Elizabeth was the "Virgin Queen." As a queen she was a success. When she exposed herself before her troops they all shouted "hurrah."

Winter Warmer Boxes

chriscmglass@gmail.com

The Trafalgar Branch of the Oddfellows were delighted to have been working alongside Age Concern North Norfolk during their “Surviving Winter” campaign. They collected groceries, toiletries, gloves and warm socks to fill shoe boxes for local elderly people in need. 15 winter warmer boxes were handed over to Angela Reith, manager of the centre based in Sheringham, when she visited the branch in February. Here we have 86 year old John Anthony receiving his shoe box of goodies from Angela Batson, Trafalgar Branch Development Officer. John said “I can’t tell you how pleased I am to receive this” and he never stopped smiling! The Oddfellows are a national friendship group which also does charity work and provides benefits for its members. They meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the St Nicholas Rooms, North Walsham. To find out more visit their website: www.oddfellows.co.uk or phone 01692 407852. Please contact Age Concern North Norfolk for further details of their work on 01263 821188.

HOLT WI MARCH 2019

Patients can nominate hospital staff for awards

Did you know that when Ethel Coleman became the first female Lord Mayor of Norwich in 1923-4, she also became the first woman in Britain to be a Lord Mayor? Also, 17 out of our one hundred mayors have been women? Phyllida Scrivens decided that her second book would be about the Lady Lord Mayors of Norwich, so spoke to each of the 9 who still survive and are all living in the environs of Norwich. Phyllida came to Holt WI March meeting to share some fascinating information about these ladies, having spent over two years researching their lives, parentage, jobs and families. She told us about each lady, from the first Ethel Coleman (1923-4) of the mustard family, to the last Marion Maxwell (2016-17). They all had very varied backgrounds, political affiliations and did not all come from Norfolk. One was from Glasgow another Reading and Valerie Guttsman (1979-80) was from Czechoslovakia, her husband being one of the first lecturers appointed to the staff of the then new UEA. This was a fascinating topic with all the details contained in her new book “The Lady Lord Mayors on Norwich 1923-2017”- well worth a read. Members were also informed of an invitation from Weybourne WI to attend their birthday party in April, a spare ticket was available to attend the Federation Garden Party in July and birthday posies were distributed. We meet again on Wednesday 17thApril at 14:00 to hear an excellent speaker Charlotte Philcox on “Remedies and Rosewater”.

From 1 April, patients from across Norfolk are being asked to nominate the health professional or hospital team who has gone the extra mile in providing their care at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital or Cromer Hospital. With the support of the Eastern Daily Press the annual Patient Choice award enables the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) to recognise those staff who provide exceptional patient care, kindness or outstanding professional expertise. Patients can nominate any nurse, doctor, midwife, therapist, receptionist or other member of staff who looked after them during an outpatient visit, day treatment or hospital stay. Mark Davies, NNUH Chief Executive, said: “It is great a pleasure to be able to recognise some of our special employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to support and care for our patients and their families. This is an opportunity for patients to nominate those truly exceptional individuals or teams who have made a difference to their lives.” Closing date for nominations is 31 May 2019. To make a nomination, go to: https://staff-awards-nnuh.org.uk/patient-choice-awards/ patient-choice-awards-2019/nominations/patient-choice-award

Dear Jo, We would like to say a huge thank you to Budgens of Holt for allowing us to have a collection in store on Friday 22nd March, raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity. We raised an amazing £326.99 and can't thank enough all those that gave so generously to this and those who stopped to share their stories and listen to our story about our precious little nephew Luca. We were very touched by the support shown. Now all that's left to do is reach our target of £1,000 raised for The Brain Tumour Charity, before Justyn runs the London Marathon on Sunday 28th April. If anyone would like to sponsor Justyn, this can be done through his JustGiving page- Read Justyn's story. Kind regards Justyn Goff & Samantha Bishop

Holt Car Parking

Dear Jo, I write in support of Paul Sanders letter advising us of the fact that work to improve both car parking in Holt and at The Sports Centre has been stopped by the actions of just one person. I am Secretary of Holt United Football Club and, on match days, particularly Sundays, we have a huge problem in squeezing all visitors’ cars. From what I have been told the proposed extensions to the Sports Centre would have taken around 30 cars off the road at Woodfield and given them much more room to park. At present several cars have no option but to park in that road. This is aside from the many benefits which would have been gained by the town from the extra car parking, especially giving more room to our visitors to park. I know of many who just give up and drive elsewhere because they cannot do so thus losing valuable business to our shops. I am amazed that the actions of what seems like just one person can stop a scheme which would have benefited many. I hope, but do not hold my breath, that this person will have the courtesy of responding to my letter by coming forward, naming him(her)self and telling us all the reasons why this spiteful action has been taken Yours sincerely, David Wright

Brexit Dialogue

Dear Jo, Brexit Dialogue (possibly overheard on the bus). “It’s like the Reformation, the break with Rome. We must break with Brussels or say goodbye to our sovereignty. Britain is an empire, sufficient unto itself. We don't take orders, especially from the French or the Germans. We once led the world and will do so again. By sheer force of will, we created an Empire. This is the country that produced Shakespeare and Darwin, Newton and Stephen Hawking, the land of Hope and Glory. We have nothing to lose by leaving the EU, but our chains! We are a proud, independent nation, encircled by the sea: proud to be an island.” “No man is an island. We’re all part of a larger whole. Climate change and pestilence, terrorism, economic relationships and modern manufacturing are no respecters of boundaries. Unless we cooperate with our neighbours, we will be left behind, vulnerable, insignificant, poor and impotent whilst the great powerblocks: China, India, the USA and Europe, deaf to our feeble protests, shape the world our grandchildren must live in. Those who claim they want to be free of European influence secretly long to sell out to Trumpism: low wages, low standards, no freedom for anyone but the plutocrats.” Jeff Wood

Sjogren’s Syndrome

Dear Jo, I am trying to find anyone who has, or knows someone who has, Sjogren’s Syndrome (pronounced Shurgren’s), an autoimmune disease. It can have many symptoms such as dry eyes, dry throat and problems with swallowing. It usually appears, mainly in women, between the ages of 40 and 60+. I’m not enquiring for any official reason just that I would like to hear from others about their treatments, comparisons etc. And maybe, at a later date have an informal support group. Please get in touch via email at wbbrjn@yahoo.co.uk or text to 07982-435-022 or leave a message. Jane Webber

Confusion Response

Dear Jo, In reply to David Ashton’s letter ‘Confusion’ (Chronicle issue 422) I would like to point out that Buddhism is the Way, or Way of Life. We can see that Christianity is the Way from Acts of the Apostles. In the Old Testament we need look only at Isaiah. In the Dead Sea Scrolls it is The Community Rule (1QS) that tells the tale. The Jews clearly became Buddhists, created a Buddhist Church and, Christianity has descended from it. The mythical Jesus is a layman’s Bodhisattva: should anyone disagree, please feel free to tell me so, my number is 07887 793666. Maurice Gray.

Beautiful Flowers Display

The display of beautiful flowers was for Mothering Sunday. How very lucky we are to have a traditional green grocery in Holt high street. Denise Benbow and her staff - Sue, Carol and Penny are a constant ‘breathe of fresh air’. They are always so cheery and brighten up many people’s day in Holt on a daily basis. They are a real tonic in today’s rather troubling world. Long may they remain in a high street which is undergone rather too much change recently much of which is, sadly, not for the better. Nigel Root.

Road Rage

Whatever's the matter with drivers these days? They all seem to suffer from some strange malaise! Should you drive slowly, they're screaming with rage, Stick to the limit, they go on a rampage! They stick up their fingers and mouth, God knows what! And if they can't pass you, they just lose the plot! A lot of these drivers are women, You can't call them ladies - they're not! When they scream and they yell, You just want to tell them to grow up and stop being a clot! Frances Wraight

Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb. Lovingly He greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let His church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for the Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting.

No more we doubt Thee, glorious Prince of life!! Life is nought without Thee; aid us in our strife; make us more than conqu'rors, through Thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan to Thy home above.

LITTLE LAMB’S PARENT & TODDLER GROUP meets every Wednesday during term time 9.30am – 11.00am in the Parish Church Hall. All parents/carers are welcome to come along and meet with friends and make new ones.

"Thine is the Glory, risen, conqu'ring Son" has to be one of the all-time favourite Easter hymns. Sung with great gusto on Easter day and accompanied with bells at Holt Parish Church, congregations raise the roof as we celebrate Christ’s resurrection from the dead. Originally written in 1884 by the Swiss writer Edmond Budry following his wife’s death and set to the tune of the chorus "See, the Conqu'ring hero comes" from Handel's oratorio Judas Maccabaeus, the hymn has stood the test of time. It expresses the immense joy of the triumph that Christ Jesus has won over sin and death by rising from the grave. His mother Mary and his disciples had witnessed his death and buried his body. On the day of his resurrection the women had gone to the tomb to anoint a dead body and to grieve. Imagine, then their surprise to encounter the risen Jesus. Death had indeed been defeated and in the words of the hymn “had lost its sting!” The resurrection of Jesus is at the centre of our faith as Christians. It is the foundation of our Christian experience and it is the goal towards which our lives move. The resurrection is important to us not because it is the end of a nice story about Jesus, but because it is the beginning of our story, a story that will end in victory when we share in the fullness of Christ’s victory over sin and death. But of course we do not have to wait until we die to share in Christ’s victory. When we are baptized (christened) we are baptized into the death and resurrection of Jesus and we live his risen life in the here and now. The endless victory that Christ has won is one he shares with all who turn to him and affords us the hope that light can triumph over darkness, hope over despair, love over hatred and life over death. In the political, turmoil of our own country and in the uncertainty of our age, Easter day renews our faith that love will ultimately triumph. Every blessing for a joyous, triumphant Easter, come and share it with us or with others in a Church near you.

April Fabb disappearance - 50th anniversary

STUNNING ART SALE TO RAISE VITAL FUNDS

Collectors will be able to snap up unique pieces of art while raising vital funds for Redwings Horse Sanctuary as the charity’s annual art sale returns. Starting on Friday 17th May, Redwings’ Aylsham Visitor Centre, north of Norwich, will be opening its doors once again to art enthusiasts and Sanctuary supporters who will be able to browse and buy pieces from a wide collection of donated artworks. From classically framed works depicting traditional countryside scenes, to modern colourful pieces by amateurs and professionals alike on an eclectic range of subjects, there’s something for everyone at this year’s event. Prices of artwork will range from £5 to £70, and every penny raised from the art sale will go directly towards the care of Redwings’ 1,500 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules nationwide. Plus, if you’re a budding artist or if you have pre-loved paintings, sculptures or textiles tucked away and looking for a new home, Redwings is still welcoming donations of artwork for the sale. Donated pieces can be accepted until Friday 10th May. While attending the art sale, which is free to enter, visitors can also take the opportunity to enjoy a stroll around the centre and meet some of the charity’s rescued residents who will benefit from the funds raised. Anne McLean, Redwings’ Gifts in Kind Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing back our annual art sale with another beautiful collection of donated artwork. Thanks to generous donors and buyers, last year’s sale raised over £1,200 which could provide veterinary health checks for 24 new arrivals at the Sanctuary or feed 80 of our rescued residents with hay for a whole month! Every penny really does make the difference.” The Redwings Art Sale will take place between Friday 17th May and Monday 24th June, at Redwings Aylsham, Spa Lane, Aylsham, Norfolk, NR11 6UE. The centre is open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday (closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays), 10am to 4pm – and entry is free. For more information or to donate a piece of artwork, email amclean@redwings.co.uk or call 01508 481070.

Next week marks the 50th anniversary of the disappearance of 13-year-old April Fabb who went missing while travelling between the villages of Metton and Roughton, on Tuesday 8 April 1969. April has never been found. Andy Guy, the Major Crime Review and Cold Case Manager within the joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team, said “This is perhaps one of the most high-profile cases in Norfolk’s recent history. We’ve always been determined to find closure for the family and over the years we’ve pursued numerous lines of enquiry. I do believe there are still people alive today who may know what happened to April and we would always review and pursue any new credible information.” On the day she disappeared, April was travelling from her home in Metton to nearby Roughton. April set off on her bicycle at about 1.40pm. Just after 2pm, an employee at Harrison’s Farm saw April riding her cycle along Roughton Road. This was the last known sighting of April. At about 2.15pm, April’s bicycle was seen lying in a field on Roughton Road. April had disappeared within a time frame of ten minutes. Later that evening April’s mother realised she was missing when she had not arrived in Roughton. She was wearing a wine coloured split skirt, with a green jumper, a pair of long white socks and a pair of wooden soled sandals with red straps.

Anyone with information concerning April's disappearance should call the Major Crime Review Team on 01953 423819 or online at https://mipp.police.uk/operation/363719N22-PO1.

North Norfolk Volunteer Hub Drop-Ins

Chairman’s Charity Parachute Jump

Would you like to learn what’s going on in and around Cromer? Would you like to help your local community? With over 100 different volunteering opportunities known in the local area, the North Norfolk Volunteer Hub would like to invite you to come and find out about what you can get involved in. Volunteering can greatly benefit you as it allows you to learn new skills, help others and is an excellent addition to your CV. Above all, it’s great fun and you get to meet loads of interesting people! Come along on either Tuesday 16th April, 12pm – 4pm or Wednesday 17th April, 9am – 12pm to talk to a member of our Volunteer Hub team, enjoy refreshments and discover what would be the best use of your time and interests.

The Chairman of North Norfolk District Council will launch himself out of a plane in tandem with a professional sky diving instructor in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). The two-mile high tandem skydive will see Cllr Nicholas Coppack in free fall for 50 seconds at speeds of more than 120mph. The jump will take place on May 4th at Beccles Airfield. EACH cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk and supports their families. Cllr Coppack said: “EACH offers a lifeline to hundreds of families and is the Chairman’s charity for the year. I am delighted to have been able to support them over the past year. “The charity gives families flexibility and control over where care and support is delivered, helping those families through some of the most difficult times they will face. “I think I’m looking forward to the jump – it might be best to ask me afterwards!” EACH is soon to replace its Norfolk hospice at Quidenham with a purpose-built facility in Framingham Earl, known as "the nook". The charity relies on voluntary donations for the majority of its income and each year needs to raise more than £6 million from fundraising and over £4 million from its shops. It has around £1.6 million left to raise of its £10 million public appeal to build the new hospice in Framingham Earl. To donate to the charity effort, log on to the JustGiving page.

Holt Community Centre, It’s YOUR Charity!

How many people in Holt realize what a great resource they have right on their doorstep? Holt Community Centre has been running for 44 years and was initially built with 25% of the cost contributed by the people of Holt after 12 years of fund raising. The centre is owned and run by a charity, but despite being the largest rentable space in Holt, has been experiencing some tough financial times. Since 2008 there has been a programme of improvements costing £120,000 which has included redecoration, installation of soundproofing and room divider, updating heating and lighting, kitchen and toilet facilities. Grants have been secured from local government, community groups, charities and lottery funding as well as bequests. But there is still a long way to go. The exciting new vision for the future is to develop an affordable and accessible space where The Arts can flourish. A space where art of all kinds can be enjoyed, created and exhibited, where people can attend fun and entertaining events at an affordable price. As well as seeking sponsorship from local businesses, the Charity is applying for Arts funding to realise this dream. But it’s not ‘art for arts sake’, first and foremost it’s about people. Carolyn Burn, the chairman of the Community Centre Committee and the Community Café Chief Operating Officer, is passionate about keeping the centre going. “It is not only about getting the centre finances stabilized and securing the centre for the future, it is also about providing a place to allow social interaction which is so important for everyone, but especially for many members of the community who are isolated, elderly or have problems with mental health. There is nothing better than sharing a meal, laughing together, discussing mutual interests and sharing life. Our volunteers also benefit from getting involved, it’s a win-win.” There many activities on offer including dance, hobby groups, film screenings in very comfortable surroundings, live satellite screenings of opera and ballet, live music, dance nights, themed food nights and many more. The centre can be hired for private functions and has a fully licensed bar. However, none of this can continue unless the centre is used and supported. It needs to become the ‘go to’ place in Holt to see a film, set up groups, enjoy a reasonably priced meal with friends, get fit, create your masterpiece or show off your talent. It’s a well-used phrase, but ‘use it or lose it’, and it is too good to lose. For information about what’s on, groups, hiring the venue and much more, email oltcc@btconnect.com or call 01263 713427.

Holt Community Centre News

If you managed to come to our Public Consultation Day, you will by now be aware that we hope to redecorate the Centre this year, and take it in a new and exciting Arts direction. We currently have a number of user groups who already comfortably fit into this category, but we really hope to attract more. Funding is being sought to provide not only Arts Studios for us to hire out, but also improvements to our stage facilities, acoustics in the hall, and a bright new look for the entire centre. We have already been very blessed by some amazing backing and sponsorship from local businesses, whose generosity has brought our goals for the Centre that much closer. Special thanks to Sure Computers of Holt, Bespoke Flooring, Elec-Tech, Marglaze, Ryan Carter Builders and Max Wiley, all of whom are helping us to realise a new future for the Charity. We are also very excited to be a part of Love Holt, who are busy promoting all that is good about our town, for the benefit of all. Their new branding will give an exciting new flavour to all things Holt, and we look forward to embracing this new vision. If you haven’t heard about Love Holt, come along to the meetings which are held at the Centre, they are open to all, whether a resident, trader or community group. It’s your chance to have a say! As we forge ahead with all our new ventures and events, we need NEW VOLUNTEERS to help us to make it all happen. It’s a great chance to join a growing family of dedicated people of all skills and backgrounds, who have a vision and passion for their town and their Centre. We have a large range of areas in which you can be involved, so give us a call and find out how you can be a part of it! For more information or to book, please call the Office on 01263 713427 Tues, Wed, and Saturdays, or email us on holtcc@btconnect.com or find us on our new Facebook page. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson.

IT’S A WIN WIN!!

During the 2018 Christmas period the Holt Lights team put together a photo quiz ‘Who or Where’ which comprised some twenty snap shots of ‘familiar’ faces and places from the town. Entrants were invited to identify all twenty, some easy others Competition Winner Julia not so. The Red Dot Gallery offered prize Percival presents her prize money for the winner and runner-up, money to Bishop John £75.00 and £25.00 respectively. Holt Mills, Stephen Wright and resident Julia Percival was the eventual Carolyn Burn from the Holt victor, a tie-break resulted in the inevitable Community Cafe ‘first out of the hat’ routine. Julia generously wished for her prize money to be donated to the Holt Community Cafe and thus a couple of weeks ago the presentation was made.

CLEY AND BEYOND – NEW WATERCOLOURS BY JOHN HURST

CLEY MARSHES VISITORS’ CENTRE IN SUPPORT OF THE NORFOLK WILDLIFE TRUST 17th – 30th April 2019 10.00am – 5.00pm daily Norfolk resident and professional watercolourist, John Hurst, is holding his 12th annual exhibition at Cley Marshes Visitors’ Centre. The collection of new work features both the immediate landscape situated around Cley alongside studies elsewhere in Norfolk. John’s technique of laying on several tints to create seasonal atmosphere is used to good effect as he captures the vast Norfolk skies and fleeting weather patterns, enhanced by flighting geese and hunting harriers. All the featured watercolours have been painted during recent months, capturing a ‘seasonal snapshot in time’ through colour and composition. John has painted for many well-known patrons, both locally and internationally and regularly engages with charities. This year he is supporting Beeston Regis Church, via an exhibition and specially painted watercolour. John will attend the exhibition whenever possible and derives great pleasure from speaking with the public about the origins and techniques associated with each painting. For more information about John’s work, other exhibitions and commissions, please visit www.marshlandarts.co.uk Let everybody know about your forthcoming event. Basic details of one-off events for charities and local good causes will be entered free. A small charge will be made for commercial events or if a boxed advertisement is required. Please e-mail details to info@ holtchronicle.co.uk or leave them in the Holt Chronicle collection box inside Feeney's Newsagents, Market Place, Holt. Funny Things Said in Court

Giving Your Consent for Data Protection

Signing up for an on-line service or entering a free competition are just a couple of examples when you might be asked to consent to your personal data to be processed. There is nothing unusual about this but under new data protection legislation there are much stricter guidelines as to how a business goes about getting your consent. Whatever the reason, if it’s not done properly, then the request for consent will be invalid. Before giving your consent, it’s really important to know what to look for. The purpose(s) for which you are allowing your personal data to be used must be clear. If there is more than one purpose, then you must be able to agree to each one separately. Your consent must be given freely which means you should never feel under pressure to give it. Significantly, your consent must be an affirmative action such as ticking a box, providing a signature or even agreeing verbally. Either way, it must be something you do because doing nothing is not giving consent and cannot be assumed as such. You should also be reminded that you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time and this should be as easy to do as giving it. Often an ‘unsubscribe’ link is provided for this purpose but beware this action will rarely delete your details from the database, to do this you must ask separately. My final message is this: Before giving consent, be absolutely clear what the requester is going to do with your personal data and if you are not comfortable with it, don’t give it. Never forget, your personal data belongs to you and no one else, so be careful who you give it to. Phil Brown, Norfolk’s Data Protection Mardler

Q: What gear were you in at the moment of the impact? A: Gucci sweats and Reeboks. Q: What was the first thing your husband said to you when he woke up that morning? A: He said, "Where am I, Cathy?" Q: And why did that upset you? A: My name is Susan. Q: Is your appearance here this morning pursuant to a deposition notice which I sent to your attorney? A: No, this is how I dress when I go to work. Q: Doctor, how many autopsies have you performed on dead people? A: All my autopsies are performed on dead people. Q: This condition you have… does it affect your memory at all? A: Yes. Q: And in what ways does it affect your memory? A: I forget. Q: You forget? Can you give us an example of something that you've forgotten? Q: How was your first marriage terminated? A: By death. Q: And by whose death was it terminated?

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKING Creamy Quiche Supper

Let us help yyou… ou…

A rich home-made quiche is a thing of luxury and beauty, a world apart from ready-made versions. Packed with delicious ingredients, oozing with cheese, and with a crisp, butter rich pastry case, it’s a delightful dish and a wonderful meal. We often just serve this with a simple salad and new potatoes, and it’s a dish that has a long heritage in this country. The great thing about a quiche is you can swap and change your fillings depending on what you have kicking around. Roasted veg are a winner, as is bacon, or mushrooms, or salmon or creamy leeks, as in this recipe. It’s a recipe of 3 parts really; make your pastry and allow it to cool in the fridge, cook your fillings and then mix your egg mixture. I very often make a few of these at a time and freeze some for a day when I have less time – they freeze great.

Creamy Blue Cheese and Leek Quiche

For the pastry 8 oz Self raising flour 4 oz butter/marg Pinch salt Approx. 7 tablespoons very cold water For the filling: 6 leeks, top and tailed and cut into thin rounds 1 onion, finely chopped Tsp dried thyme A little olive oil and a knob of butter 6 large eggs 150ml single cream 50ml milk Freshly grated nutmeg Salt and pepper ½ small pack blue cheese

Make your pastry by rubbing butter into sifted flour and salt until it resembles fine breadcrumbs, and then add the cold water, bringing the pastry together with a knife. Wrap in clingfilm and place in fridge until needed. Gently fry your onion and leeks together in a little olive oil, with the herb and seasoning, until softening. Add in a knob of butter and stir until melted. Beat your eggs, cream, milk and a little grated nutmeg and seasoning. Roll out the pastry on a floured work surface, and line a 10 inch ceramic or glass fluted quiche dish. Prick the base all over with a fork. Place leek mixture in the bottom and even out. Carefully pour over egg mixture, and then crumble over the blue cheese. Place in oven on 180° for around 40 mins or until lightly browned and firm in the middle. Serve immediately, or cool and keep in the fridge for 2 – 3 days.

A Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable

Life on the Farm – part 2 by Leslie Kinsley

We did have outside help sometimes, depending on the crop being harvested. Local women came in to pick up the potatoes once they were dug up, and the schoolchildren came after school to pick the broad beans. They were given so much per box and my nephew did well, as I was in charge of the tickets which showed how many they had picked. These crops were mostly sent out by train then as we had the station at Melton Constable. The cabbages for instance went to the London markets, but more of that later. One of the heavier jobs was harvesting hay as it all had to be manhandled into ‘cocks’ or small stacks to be heaved onto the cart. The weather was always hot when we did this, and come midday we were all really tired and would have loved an after lunch nap (we would have been working since first light). We were working on this one year on the day of the Royal Norfolk Show. Our boss always went to the show so we lay down under the hedge for that longed for nap. Alas the boss had stayed at home and caught us! Did he shout! The farm foreman was the man in charge of the tractor. It was a Fordson Major and I longed to drive it. One day the foreman got into a dispute with our boss. It was over some repairs to the cottage where the foreman lived. The boss was responsible for repairs and was slow to arrange them. The foreman walked off his job in protest and got the sack. This was my big chance and I took to it like a duck to water. I could manoeuvre that tractor better than anyone else and the boss was very impressed. In addition I could plough a perfectly straight furrow with it. In fact I won prizes for my ploughing ability. At this time the horse were gradually being replaced by tractors and other machines. In the end, the only horse left was an ex racehorse which the boss used to ride on about the farm. The railway was shut down in Melton Constable eventually, and my boss decided his crops would have to be moved by lorry. He sent me off to Norwich to learn the driving skills and take my test. I was on the road! Of course this meant I worked all day on the farm and then loaded the lorry with cabbages before setting off for the London markets. You had to arrive by 3am in the centre of London unload and collect the cash before driving home for another day of work. I have found myself hitting the road side banking because I was so tired. The lorry was very basic, no heating of course, so I used sacking to stay warm. I smoked then though I later gave up. My boss had cheap petrol on the farm and he insisted I took spare cans of it in the cab with me. It is a wonder I did not blow myself up!

Everyone Active Sporting Champions was set up to support up-and-coming local athletes with free access to training facilities, financial support and expert advice. It has also taken on the out-of-school-hours operation of three dual use sports centres adjoined to local schools in Cromer, North Walsham and Stalham. As well as taking on the day-to-day running of the six facilities, Everyone Active will work in partnership with the Council to develop its new £10.7million centre that is being built to replace Splash Leisure Centre with new, state-of-the-art facilities. The new contract is kicking off with a number of significant investments being made across the facilities. Victory Swim and Fitness Centre, Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre and Fakenham Sports and Fitness Centre will receive brand new Technogym fitness equipment, and the fitness offering at

What do you need to do first when someone dies?

Sadly, burglaries do take place so it can also be a good idea to take items of sentimental or financial value elsewhere for safekeeping. Often elderly people under-insure their house and its contents, so do check the level of cover. Sometimes the security arrangements are insufficient to meet the insurance company’s requirements, so do not overlook this. After 60 days most insurance companies impose conditions and restrict cover on empty properties. If this is a worry, we can undertake property checks and have useful local reliable contacts and knowledge.

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr Little Walsingham I am often asked what needs to be done as a first step when a family member or loved one dies. Obviously, it depends on the person’s circumstances as to what are the top priorities, but it goes without saying that the first thing that needs attention is the funeral. The funeral director will deal with the arrangements, but it is worth checking the Will to see if there are any specific funeral wishes. This can be as simple as a preference for burial or cremation but often there is more detail such as where the funeral should take place, form of service, choice of hymns and music, where the remains are to scattered or interred, and sometimes very individual requests. The death must be registered before the funeral can take place. This is usually done by a close family member at a registry office of the Norfolk County Council. There are, of course, rules. You will need to give details of their place and date of birth, their occupation and all the names, by which they (and their widow or deceased spouse) have been known, It is important to make sure that the house is secure and insured.

There are then the practical matters to deal with such as ensuring that household bills continue to be paid and that the house is kept warm enough so the pipes do not freeze and burst or other problems arise. If the person has left a Will, the solicitors holding it will need to see the death certificate and have the written authority of all the executors to release it or copies of it. An executor’s authority arises from the will and so exists immediately from the death. A Grant of Probate is often needed to “prove” that the executor(s) have the legal power to administer the estate. If a person has died without a Will they are “intestate” and no one has authority to deal with anything until the Grant of Letters of Administration is issued by the probate court. However, practicality must prevail and arrangements can usually be made to keep things ticking over until either the grant issues or the nearest family members entitled under the intestacy rules get matters moving. Probate solicitors are here to help when somebody passes away. Their experience is not just in dealing with and advising on the legal process but also the practical and family side of matters. LOCAL CHARITY LAUNCHES 25TH ANNIVERSARY APPEAL

2019 marks the 25th anniversary since The Benjamin Foundation was established. To mark this milestone the Norfolk and Suffolk based charity has announced plans for a high-profile, visually appealing, engaging and, most importantly, family friendly celebration, and they are appealing for the public to get involved. They plan to create a dramatic art installation called Flight for Youth which will feature up to 25,000 glazed pottery butterflies glazed in one of the charity’s four distinct colours – pink, purple, orange or red. The public are being invited to purchase a butterfly but before taking receipt of their commemorative piece the butterflies are being used to create two dramatic and high-profile art installations, at The Assembly House and Holkham Hall. The charity is also inviting schools, care homes and other groups and organisations to purchase unglazed butterflies, which they can design and decorate themselves using acrylic or enamel paint. The decorated butterflies can then be loaned back to the charity for inclusion on one of the installations at the Assembly House or Holkham Hall. Participants can then visit the installation and see their butterfly in situ. Colin Lang MBE, Special Projects Manager who has created the appeal said: “We hope this presents an engaging, creative, fun and low-cost activity for your students, with plain kiln fired butterflies just £12 each. Groups could even create a competition or a fun Easter activity around the butterflies.” Flight for Youth also aims to raise funds to continue the work of The Benjamin Foundation, so the charity is appealing to companies in the region to get behind the campaign through sponsorship. They are delighted that many companies have already pledged sponsorship, including Norwich High School for Girls, who are headline sponsors. The Benjamin Foundation was founded in 1994 by Richard Draper and his wife Vanessa, following the death of their son Ben and for 25 years the charity has been helping people across Norfolk and Suffolk. Tony Ing, Chief Executive of The Benjamin Foundation says: “Twenty-five years is an important milestone for any organisation. It marks an opportunity for us to celebrate and reflect on where we have come from, what we have achieved and what our priorities are for the next quarter century.” For more information about how to GET INVOLVED. First ‘Gritty Grasshopper’ takes place at Gresham’s School in Holt Pupils at Gresham’s Senior School in Holt enjoyed their first endurance event the ‘Gritty Grasshopper’ yesterday raising over £3700 for two charities, Farms for City Kids and the Lord’s Taverners. Teams of eight navigated their way around an obstacle course set on the school’s grounds giving them the opportunity to test their metal against other teams, the obstacles and their own minds. Teamwork was key and pupils motivated each other through difficult and muddy obstacles. It was a fun way to finish a busy term with pupils aged 13 to 18 having the opportunity to be

‘children’ for the afternoon. Tom Burnett, who teaches PE and was one of the organisers, commented, “The Gritty Grasshopper 2019 definitely delivered! Thirty five teams, 280 runners and more than £3700 raised - an afternoon spent defeating obstacles and deep mud, across the beautiful Gresham's school grounds. Smiles, laughter and good old fashioned team spirit galore. Bring on the Gritty Grasshopper 2020.” Each year the school selects a charity to support and pupils get involved in all sorts of exciting fundraising events. This year, the school has two charities, Farms for City Kids and the Lord’s Taverners. The Gritty Grasshopper is just one of a number of activities pupils will take part in to raise money for these charities. Past activities have included sleeping outside in an igloo, cycling from Norfolk to Cornwall, dressing up, leg shaving and organising cake sales, to name a few.

REFLEX HAIR STUDIO - CELEBRATING 30 YEARS

I can’t believe I have been in business for 30 years this April 2019. My journey began in April 19890when, at the young age of just 20, I took out a business loan for a lease hold on a shop premises in Holt. I was nervous but confident I could succeed and 30 years on I think I can say I have made it. A massive thank you goes to my parents Bryan and Chris Tipper for standing guarantor as without their backing none of this would have been possible. There is one person I wish I could have said a big thank you too and that’s Mike Curtis (Butcher Andrews Solicitors) who sadly is no longer with us, however it was his kind words and sound advice that helped give me the confidence to pursue this business venture. Also thanks to my staff past and present as it is has been them that have helped me along the way. The biggest thanks of all goes to my clientele, not only are they my customers, many of them have become very good friends, some have been with me for the full 30 years, Thank you all

THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL THE FORGIVING MESSIAH By Maurice Gray

Christians believe that their mythical Messiah was the only one who forgives sins yet, before he was invented there was a real Messiah who forgave sins. The Messiah was the whole Church, the pious (Hasidim/Hasideans) the saints. It is written in a Dead Sea Scroll called the Damascus Document (CD) column XIV, “This is the exact statement of the statutes in which [they shall walk until the coming of the Messiah] of Aaron and Israel who will pardon their iniquity.” So, who is Jesus? He is the image of the Messiah of Aaron and Israel the whole Church, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. That is why Jesus was made to say: ‘I am the door of the sheep’; ‘I am the true vine’. Whatever the Church was called the fictitious Jesus became, for they made him so. The understanding of the Jesus story is in the symbols. Should Christians disagree, phone 07887 793666 and enlighten me. The Dead Sea Scrolls in English is published by Penguin Books. For more secrets see our book the SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL written by Maurice Gray, available from Crystal Moon Cavern, 1 Mount Street, Cromer, a new age spiritual shop and holistic practice, and Grave’s Stores, Briston. Price £4.50.

More than 200 knives seized during police week of action

More than 200 knives have been seized during a week of action aimed at reducing knife crime. Norfolk police was one of 44 forces involved in Operation Sceptre between Monday 11 March and Sunday 17 March – a national campaign which took place to highlight the risks that carrying a blade can bring, as well as targeting offenders who use and carry knives. During the week officers held a knife surrender initiative where members of the public were able to hand over knives at Public Enquiry Offices across the county without fear of prosecution. A total of 237 knives were handed in, including machetes, samurai swords, daggers, hunting knives and flick knives. Officers also carried out high visibility patrols targeting those who carry knives. There were 114 stop/searches with 26 knives seized and 11 people arrested for possession of a bladed article. Four of those have since been charged. In addition, officers conducted test purchases at local retailers in conjunction with Norfolk County Council Trading Standards. Two venues failed to ask for identification before selling large knives to someone over the age of 18 and were issued with words of advice. Chief Superintendent Dave Marshall said: "Reducing knife crime and the violence associated with it is a priority both nationally and here in Norfolk. In one week a significant amount of knives have been surrendered, preventing them from getting onto the streets of Norfolk or into the wrong hands, whilst a further 26 knives have been seized and taken off our streets. "Only in the last few days we have seen the impact knife crime can have on communities with the stabbing of a teenage boy in Mountbatten

Arts and Culture Grant Funding Awarded by NNDC

North Norfolk District Council has awarded £11,000 from its Arts and Culture Fund to a range of projects from a youth centre, a park, music classes and a Parish Council. The Arts and Culture Fund was launched a year ago and has awarded £28,032 to 19 projects in North Norfolk. The aim of the fund is to provide vital funding to projects whose activities, services or events will improve the health and wellbeing of the people of North Norfolk through active participation in visual, literary and performing arts. At the last Arts and Culture Fund Panel meeting, a total of £11,579 was awarded to support the following projects: • Southrepps Chorale (£729) - To hold a half-day open choral workshop to be led by an invited experienced professional presenter /facilitator with a national reputation. The workshop will be open to both singers and non-singers in the North Norfolk area. • Cantamus Community Choir (£1,000) - To hold a one-day open choral workshop with a free evening performance at the Lighthouse Church in Sheringham. There will also be outdoor performances in three local villages. Alongside the performances there will be a series of schools’ drama and music workshops led by experienced workshop leaders which will enable the children in each school to explore one of the themes of the community play and develop their own interpretation as a 'mini-drama' of their own. • Friends of North Lodge Park (£500) - To promote and publicise three open air theatre performances: Midsummer Night’s Dream – performed by Stuff of Dreams Theatre Company, The Importance of Being Earnest – performed by Stuff of Dreams Theatre Company and King Arthur email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Drive in Norwich. Investigations are ongoing but this incident highlights how important it is to target those who carry knives to prevent it from happening again. It is also vital we continue to work with our Safer Schools Partnership to educate young people about the risks carrying a blade can bring. "Police tactics alone will not prevent knife crime and solutions must involve action from education, health, social services and communities themselves. We all have a duty to protect our communities from harm and keep them safe. "If you know someone who carries a knife, then please contact police. One call could help protect them or potentially save someone else’s life” If you suspect someone is carrying a knife please call Norfolk Police on 101 or you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity and will not take any personal details and the call cannot be traced.

Our nephew was getting married to a doctor’s daughter. At the wedding reception, the father of the bride stood to read his toast, which he had scribbled on a piece of scrap paper. Several times during his speech, he halted, overcome with what I assumed was a moment of deep emotion. But after a particularly long pause, he explained, "I’m sorry. I can’t seem to make out what I’ve written down." Looking out into the audience, he asked, "Is there a pharmacist in the house?"

Holt Society Book ‘Escapades’ Donated to Gresham Village School Library

On Thursday 28th March, Bakers & Larners of Holt and the Holt Society were proud to attend a presentation and donate five copies of the Escapades in Holt children’s story book to Gresham Village School. The books were donated to the Gresham Village School library by Duncan Baker of Bakers & Larners of Holt, and Susan Williams and Lindsay Furniss of the Holt Society to Headteacher Marc Goodliffe. Held during afternoon assembly, pupils were treated to a reading of the book – to a fantastic reception. “Bakers & Larners are delighted to support Gresham Village School’s library and hope the children will enjoy learning more about the history of Holt. Many years ago the company helped start the school’s ibrary with a generous donation, so we are delighted to continue this support, said Duncan Baker. Escapades in Holt is designed to encourage local families and visitors to explore Holt via a trail that brings the town’s history to life. Published by The Holt Society, the book is intended to 'make history come alive' for the young generation of Holt. The book is available from The Holt Bookshop, Baby O, Bakers & Larners of Holt, Budgens of Holt, The Owl Tearooms, Pensthorpe Natural Park, Ryburgh Village Shop, The Tannery or direct from the Holt Society at info@theholtsociety.org. www.holtchronicle.co.uk

Walking with Sheringham Ramblers

A village friend said her walking group at home was called the 'Walkie-Talkies'. The name could be applied to us, although our proper name is Sheringham Ramblers. Our various leaders make sure the pace of the group means that all walk together, because socialising is a big part of who we are. All walks start at 10am but the length of walk varies between the Wednesday walks which will be about 5 miles, and the Sunday walks, which tend to be nearer 9-10 miles. On the shorter walks there is normally a chance for a 'bring your own' coffee break and you will be back home for lunch. On the Sunday walks there is both a coffee break and one for a picnic lunch. The longer walks tend to end between 2-3pm. The majority of walkers come from the Sheringham/Holt area, but as a member of Ramblers nationally can join any walk that catches their eye in the Norfolk Handbook or on the website, we are often joined by members from other parts of Norfolk or even wider afield. Numbers on any particular walk tend to be larger of the shorter walks (about 20) but smaller on the longer walks (usually about 12). Anyone can try a walk to see if they enjoy it; if you wish to walk regularly with us, we will ask you to become a member so to access the information for all the walks available locally and nationally. We also run social events for our walkers during the year such as a summer barbecue, A Festive Meal around Christmas and special event walks such as the Wherry Day on the Broads etc. For further information ring Norman or Julia on 01263 825457.

Printed copies of the full Fit Together programme may be collected from Holt Library.

A duck, a skunk and a deer went out for dinner at a restaurant one night. When it came time to pay, the skunk didn’t have a scent, the deer didn’t have a buck so they put the meal on the duck’s bill.

with Dr Andrew Chapman The next interview in the ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ series at Holt Library is on Thursday the 18th of April with Dr Andrew Charles Chapman, GP partner Holt Medical Practice 1977-2011. Sessions run from 11.00am till 12.00 noon. Born in Clapham in 1948, the year of the commencement of the NHS, Dr Chapman moved to Sundridge in Kent in 1955. He was educated at Sundridge primary school, St Thomas’ Catholic Secondary School up to the age of 16, and then Judd Grammar School Tonbridge for A levels. From 1967 till 1973 he attended St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in Paddington (now part of Imperial College). 1973-1975 he had House jobs in Medicine, Surgery, and Paediatrics around London. 1975-1977 he was part of the Norfolk and Norwich GP Training scheme, with Senior House jobs in Psychiatry, Accident and Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, followed by a medical appointment in Neurology, Cardiology, Dermatology and Rheumatology. In 1977, Dr Chapman became a GP trainee at Oak Street Medical Practice in Norwich. From 1978 till 2011 he was a partner in the Holt medical practice; from 1979 till 1997 Dr Chapman was school doctor to Gresham’s School; from 1980-2007, he was a trainer of General Practitioners, for the NNH GP training Scheme; from 1990-2004, he was a GP member of the Medical Services Committee (dealing with complaints against GPs); from 1997-2007, he was advisor to Norfolk Practitioner Conciliators. And from 2006 till 2011 he was Honoury Senior lecturer in Medicine at UEA medical school. Away from medicine: he has a wife, Trish, who worked as a manger at Holt and Dereham CAB. They have a son Tom and daughter Alice. Andrew is a keen sailor and chairman of the Stiffkey Cockle Sailing Club. A squash player in the past he is still a tennis player, a passable golfer, and a better than average road cyclist. He is a keen gardener particularly in the veg-patch. And now a devoted grandfather, to 4 grandsons, he is an experienced afternoon snoozer. These sessions are about valuing the contributions of individuals to the life of the community, past and present; about exploring Holt from different perspectives. Participants talk about the Holt and Norfolk they know and love, past and present; how it was when they first knew it, and how it is now, both from a personal and a professional point of view. Booking for these sessions is advisable. (Telephone Holt Library on 01263 712202.) The event is free but donations to the library are welcome. Tea and coffee are available. Recordings of past sessions of “My Norfolk, My Holt' are available as part of the Norfolk Heritage Centre Podcast webpage, which can be found here: www.thenorfolkheritagecentrepodcast.wordpress.com/ my-norfolk-my-holt ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ – is a way of bringing together different members and sections of the community, as well as valuing the place of the library. The next ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ is on May the 16th with Robin Combe.

Norfolk Life

by Richard Shepheard.

The Probate Saga. Six and sixty years ago, when I first learned to read, I became an initiate into the humour of Norfolk. Old copies of the East Anglian Magazine found their way into our home in Norwich and I remember some of the jokes even to this day. If one becomes hazy, I fret like a shepherd looking for a lost sheep, not content till it comes back to the fold of memory.

What is the best of all, however? I'm tempted to suggest that the Probate Saga must be at the very front rank, what do you think? In this tale two old bachelor brothers, Freddie and Jimmie of Barford, had a maiden aunt Ada Thirkettle of Barnham Broom who died leaving them her entire estate. A year after her passing no news of a settlement had been received and they hitched the donkey into the cart and went off to Norwich to see the solicitor.

Jimmie left Freddie in charge of the dicky and cart and went into see the solicitor. Greetings were exchanged and Jimmie then said: "Well thas's like this. Me and my brother Fredda outside, we lorst our old aunt Ada Tharkettle of Barnham Broom rudda near twelve months ago, we know we're the sole beneficiaries of the will, but we hint had no money. Can you sort et out for us?" The solicitor breezed out and came back with a file. He read the preamble and then said: "Well it appears that a bill of probate has been taken out, but I'm afraid there has been a rupture in the proceedings at Somerset House and until we get the assignees together to prove, I'm afraid you won't get any money." Jimmie thanked him and stumped off out into the street.

Freddie said: "Woss he say 'bour?" and received the immortal reply: Jimmie: "Well thas's like this here. Old Billa Probert ha' fell down in that ole summer house and ruptured hisself and until they git his arse and knees together we aren't agorn ta git nuh money!"

‘’Fun & Forgetfulness Information Day’’ on 22nd May 2019

At our April meeting Helen Bird from Marks Tey in Essex came to demonstrate and her theme was ‘Made to Measure’. She made several spectacular arrangements using very varied containers including a terracotta chimney pot, a watering can and a spectacular piece of wood and amused us all with her funny anecdotes regarding the flowers and foliage she was using and how she had come by them. The vote of thanks was given by Judith Follows. The member’s monthly competition was entitled ‘Seasonal Egg-citement’ and the people’s choice winner was Cathy Stern with this beautiful pictured arrangement which you will see very much fits the brief! We also hold monthly workshops at the Copeman Centre, Briston, NR24 2LG, to which non-flower club members are always welcome at a cost of £5.00.The next one is for a pedestal or urn using chicken wire on Saturday 27th April 1.00 – 3.30pm Our next club meeting is on Monday 6th May at Holt Community Centre, when we welcome National Demonstrator Nick Grounds from Wisbech. Holt Bowls Club Visit Belgium

On Friday, 29th March, the day the UK were due to leave the European Union, a group of members and friends set off from Holt Bowls Club for a four-day trip by coach to Belgium, organised by their Social Secretary, Maureen Dennis. After picking up some fellow bowlers from Enfield they proceeded to the Channel Tunnel. Their base in Belgium was the centuries old city of Leuven, situated in the Flanders region, which boasts attractive squares, numerous cafes and restaurants and one of the world’s most beautiful Gothic Town Halls. It is also the city in which a famous Belgian beer is brewed and many of the group enjoyed sampling one or two glasses during their stay! On Saturday, in bright sunshine, their regular driver, George, drove the group to nearby Mechelen, another old, attractive city and the site of St. Rumbold’s Cathedral which has a 97-metre-tall tower overlooking the bustling market square below and the countryside beyond. On Sunday they went to Dinant, a picturesque town on the River Meuse, with a citadel high up on the cliffs. It is the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, who invented the saxophone, and there are many large model saxophones displayed around the town. The group returned on Monday, having had a thoroughly enjoyable four days exploring a lovely area of Belgium.

Rowing Returns to Blakeney

After a great winter season of weekly rowing from Barton Turf across the Norfolk Broads, your local rowing club has returned to its home base on Blakeney Carnser. There have already been several preliminary expeditions towards the Point – some of them early in the morning. One memorable voyage saw a crew going further afield to row out of Wells Harbour. The website at crablakeney.wordpress.com shows some great pictures. At the time of writing, the club’s two beautiful skiffs – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – await their blessing ceremony on April 1st before the new outings schedule properly commences. Everyone is looking forward to a full and active summer season of rowing in good company. Rowers can anticipate several competitions during 2019. Two which stand out are the King’s Lynn Hanse Festival on Saturday 11th May and the Thames Great River Race on Saturday September 14th. Crews have records of success in both these events and trophies will need to be defended. Let battle commence. Come along and try skiff rowing. Simply enjoy the experience of being amongst beautiful scenery and wildlife. You may sample three rows before deciding whether to join and no previous experience is necessary. There is no obligation to compete. If you are interested, contact Tom on 01263-761570 and arrange a suitable time for your first outing. Comments from people who have sampled rowing include, “My expectations were exceeded and I thoroughly enjoyed the row with great company,” and “… a very enjoyable introduction and very friendly members.” A great experience awaits you at Blakeney Rowing Club. Barry Howes.
