Mayor’s Report (2018 – 2019)
Well, I have to say it has been a very mixed year. One of the most rewarding projects has undoubtedly been Nelson House. This initiative was the brainchild of our Officer, Elaine Oliver. It was by no means a sudden decision. She works inclusively, and for a long time, a base of one room had proved to be a restricting space in which to do business. The search for new premises resulted in Nelson House at just the right time. The overall feeling was that the building needed us as much as we needed the space it offered; the bonus being we would save a worthy building; to include a display room for residents to share their memorabilia and an area to house Holt TIC. I would call this an all-round success and huge thanks go to Elaine for seeing this project to a very successful conclusion. My thanks must go to my Deputy Mayor, for giving us the benefit of his professional skills, particularly when dealing with financial and legal negotiations. Community areas have been tended by Councillors who have worked throughout the year, with volunteers, on specific projects; e.g. Spouts Committee, for the benefit of all our residents and visitors, and SNAP committee, working with the Police to keep us informed. We also have a Personnel Committee requiring dedication as they deal with both pleasant and sensitive situations, very important to the individuals involved. Thank you all for your support. Holt Town Council (HTC) is an officially regulated, constituted body whose members are obliged to work within the Code of Conduct and commit to this. Town Councils’ duties are to all those who reside in the Town; no one person, group of people or organization being any more important than any other. The Standard Business Meeting is held monthly. The public are welcome to observe at these meetings and may comment at a given time. What has had to be repeatedly reiterated this year is that our meetings are not, by regulation, open meetings or for anything other than the Councillors to discuss the Council Business on the agenda. This is by National Regulation. However, what must also be remembered is that any of our residents are able to contact HTC, via our Clerk, by email, phone or letter on any day of the month. Therefore, there is no reason why your issues will not be given the correct and appropriate attention. One of the many things I would specifically thank our Clerk for is her extreme efficiency and professionalism with all correspondence. Residents elect their Councillors to make decisions for those who live here because we are SCRUTINISED by professional bodies. We cannot be ruled by those who shout the loudest at meetings or gather like-minded people around them to bring pressure on the Council or Councillors towards their personal concerns, or indeed to fuel animosity. I have been personally vilified and bullied throughout this year because I have done my best to bring the correct procedure to meetings, and I will state here that it has been vastly personal. However, much more importantly than this is that the people who really suffer from the time spent on such detrimental behaviour are our residents. Our desire is to provide good things for this town, but I have seen positive opportunities for Holt thwarted by group pressure and others stopped altogether, or severely jeopardised, because of such actions – e.g.: • Our School • Play Equipment for Children living on the south of the bypass • Car Parking Relief at the Sports Centre, because it was a Town Council Project (I specifically supported this as a brilliant first step towards relieving the horrendous parking on Kelling Road and Cley Road) • Amenity space in Holt Centre (to keep people in the town centre) because it was an original Town Council project! • Supermarket to offer choice • Disability Route • Farmers Market…………………., I could go on! As I said at the outset, a very mixed year, and one that could mould the future of Holt. Thank you to all the lovely individual people I’ve had the pleasure to serve this year Maggie Prior Holt Mayor, Chair of Holt Town Council.

County Councillor News from County Councillor Dr Marie Strong Wells Division (Glaven, Priory and Walsingham Wards) marie.strong@norfolk.gov.uk; 07920 286 597
Wells-next-the-Sea Recycling Centre Re-use Shop:
I know residents – and non-residents – from a wide area beyond Wells use the Centre and I believe all will be pleased that following considerable debate and work a Re-use Shop will be open circa 20 May. Children’s Centres: Norfolk County Council’s children’s services committee took what proved to be a controversial decision in January to close 38 of the 53 children’s centres. The council is moving towards providing support through a new Early Childhood and Family Service. Fifteen centres will survive as bases with the council promising a targeted service in other areas in libraries, village halls and people’s homes. The council had invited tenders from organisations to run the new service. The process has now been completed and the identity of the provider or providers will soon be announced with more detail as to the services. Mobile Libraries: The Library Service is writing to all local councils explaining the new arrangements and any change of stopping points. The information will also be available on the mobile library. Please share the information for where you live with neighbours and friends – particularly newcomers, recently retired and those with young children. For a new stopping off place I am told approximately 6 people will be considered. Talk with your parish councillors and/or the mobile library staff. Broadband Providers and Costs: For those particularly still without fibre broadband the following link should help you check providers, costs etc. (Remember to consider length of contracts once fibre has been confirmed.) https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-telecoms-and-internet/advice-for-consumers/costs-and-billing/price-comparison Parking Infringements: Easter approaches along with the understandable complaints from bus drivers about inconsiderate parking making a mockery of their timetable and from residents who struggle to leave their own driveway as a result of cars overlapping their exit. Send your complaints to parking.operations@west-norfolk.gov.uk with as much information as possible such as time/day of week, location etc; one or two photographs can help. Blue Badges & Safe Parking: Recently NCC Highways officers have reported to me their shock at seeing Blue Badge holders parking on the corners of roads putting themselves and others at risk. Apart from common sense as to your own safety, to others and even your vehicles, please remember a Blue Badge does not mean you can park anywhere and everywhere – read the details provided with your badge – residents in one parish watched a blue badge holder getting a ticket for just such an offence - Be Safe and avoid a ticket!

Big Bodham Spring Clean
INTERNATIONAL ORGANIST BACK AT BRISTON!
The next in the very popular series of Briston Organ Shows will feature top UK and International organ superstar Nicholas Martin. His repertoire includes all styles of music to suit all tastes, from classics to pops, standards, film and TV themes, and just about everything you could possibly enjoy! He has played for us several times before, and always packed Briston’s Copeman Centre with lovers of great live music.
A group of hardly locals braved the wet conditions to take place in a community litter pick in Bodham, on Sunday 7th April. The 'Big Bodham Spring Clean' event was organised by Rock Bodham, with pickers and sacks provided by North Norfolk District Council. Callum Ringer, who organised the event on behalf of Rock Bodham, said, “We all have to do our bit to reduce the amount of plastics getting into our environment, and we at Rock Bodham are well aware of that. All plastics and cans, etc, pose a threat to our wildlife, Bodham is located at the source of the River Glaven, it is wildlife not only on land, but in our watercourses that can suffer if we don't act Hopefully we have made a difference, and the village will look nicer too. Volunteers met at the village hall, and were treated to teas, coffees, and cakes afterwards to dry off and warm up. Rock Bodham, who’s main event is its music festival on 27th July, organise a range of events in the village throughout the year, including quiz nights at Bodham Red Hart, and the village fireworks display in November.
The date is Friday May 10th, starting at 7.30pm, and tickets are available now at just ÂŁ6 each by ‘phoning Carol on 01263 860844. The Copeman Centre in Hall Street, Briston, has comfortable seating, excellent acoustics, loads of free parking right outside the door, and wide level access that makes it ideal for disabled visitors. As usual, all profits from the raffle and excellent refreshments will benefit the Copeman Centre’s fundraising. Do come and join us if you enjoy the best in live music!

News from The Holt Community Centre
A Charity relies on the goodwill and support of the Community in which it operates, and in this regard, the Holt Community Centre has been recently blessed by the amazing support of Andrew at Sure Computers in Holt, who has furnished the Charity with a new computer to replace its ageing one, as well as helping us to install it. In supporting us in this way, they are enabling the Charity to move forward with its aims this year of updating operations at the Centre. Please do support Sure Computers, who are a great Holt company of 20 years standing, with a great reputation for going the extra mile for their customers; they deserve it for their fabulous Community spirit. Also on the cards in the next couple of months is a redecoration of the Centre’s interior areas. We are having a Big Weekend Clean Up on 27th and 28th April from 9am, to clean up all areas ready for the painting. This will be done entirely by a large team of volunteers, to keep costs down and help us to achieve a new look for the Centre.
It will make a huge difference to the look and feel of the interior, which is sorely needed, and will help us to attract new business to the Centre, thus securing its future. If you are able to spare any time to help us to clean and redecorate, please do pop in or call us and join the crew. Lunch and other refreshments will be provided for volunteers on the weekend, and we intend to have a lot of fun doing it! You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped to reimagine the look of YOUR Community Centre. We enjoyed a wonderful themed food night on 5th April when we had our Greek Night, an evening of delicious Greek food, entertainment and a fun quiz. Around 90 people came to enjoy the evening, helping us to raise vital funds for the Centre. The next one will be on 25th May, and will be Arabian Night! Expect delicious and plentiful tastes of Arabia, another chance to pit your wit against our Quiz Meister, and some Arabian themed entertainment...all for a very reasonable £8.00 a head! Many thanks to Allards Butchers for supporting us again with their amazing meat, which makes cooking such a pleasure, and the end result absolutely delicious. A record turnout for our 2 showings of Bohemian Rhapsody at our Community Cinema completed a highly successful 2 weeks at the Centre, and it was wonderful to see so many people enjoying their Community Centre, which after all is what it is there for! For more info about upcoming events and regular Groups that meet there, please call 01263 713427, email us on holtcc@btconnect.com or find us on Facebook. We look forward to hearing from you! StART Concert
The first concert being promoted by StART is the accomplished Russian born pianist Veronika Shoot who will be performing at St Andrew’s Church Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6EZ. Born in Moscow, Veronika moved to the UK at the age of five when her father Vladislav Shoot became the composer-in-residence at Dartington Hall. By the age of seven years old she had performed her first recital, playing to a sold-out audience at the Dartington International Summer School music festival. Recognised by Lord Yehudi Menuhin at just six years old as “destined to become a great pianistâ€? Veronika Shoot is identified by distinguished musicians and audiences alike as “one of the most sensitive, charismatic and versatileâ€? pianists performing. Performing across the UK and worldwide, Veronika has broadcasted on platforms such as BBC Spotlight News and BBC Radio 3. She has been invited to play on some of the most prestigious stages in classical music, including London’s Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, St John’s Smith Square, Purcell Room, The Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow, Amsterdam Conservatoire, International Mozart Festival in Istanbul, Koblenz Pianist Veronika Shoot Gymnasium and L’OpeĚ ra Gabriel at the ChaĚ‚teau de Versailles. Veronika studied with full scholarships at The Yehudi Menuhin School under the tutorship of Professor Irina Zaritzkaya, The Purcell School of Music and The Royal Academy of Music, with Professor Tatiana Sarkisova—graduating with a First—and The Royal Scottish Conservatoire with Professor Fali Pavri, where she received a Distinction for her Masters. Her debut album “Journey Through Childhoodâ€? was released April 2019 on the Ulysses Arts record label and is available for purchase on iTunes and all major streaming platforms.
Entitled 'JOURNEY THROUGH CHILDHOOD', Veronika's recital will include Children’s Corner by Claude Debussy, Piano Pieces for Children by Toru Takemitsu, Children’s Album (a selection) by Vladislav Shoot, The Music Box op.32 by Anatoly Lyadov, Four Little Caricatures, Op.19 by Erich Wolfgang Korngold (Caricatures of Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Bartok and Hindemith), Child’s Notebook, Op.69 by Dmitri Shostakovich and Kinderszenen, Op.15 (Scenes from Childhood) by Robert Schuman. Concerts previously organised by Falcon are now being promoted by StART – the St. Andrew’s ARTs Project. The aims of StART are very similar to those of Falcon in that we are raising funds for the promotion of the arts in Holt. The concerts remain free to everyone; asking the audience to make a donation at the end of the performance. A licensed bar will be open from 6.00pm prior to the concert and again at the interval.
An exciting innovation is the opportunity to have supper after the concert to meet the performer. Tickets for the supper are available from Catherine Hume chume.peacocks@gmail.com for ÂŁ15 per person.

HOLT TOWN COUNCIL ELECTION Thursday 2nd May HOLT COMMUNITY CENTRE 7am-10pm
BRYAN PAYNE I have lived in Holt all my life and my family have lived in the town for many generations.
I have always been practically involved in the community including the posts of Chairman of Holt Chamber of Trade. Chairman of Holt Sports Association, the steering group for achieving the Kelling Road Sports Centre, Chairman of Holt Carnival, Governor of Holt Primary School and a member of Holt Society. I enjoy being a working volunteer on Holt Spout Hills and the Tourist information Centre.
Visit our showroom in Holt for inspiration
I have been a member of Holt Town Council for 24 years and Chairman/Mayor for 8 years. I believe that the Town Council should represent all sections of the community and if re-elected I will continue to push for development of our employment areas and affordable homes to enable us to retain our young people. We owe it to our children to have a new school away from the traffic noise and pollution of the existing one this can be built at hardly any cost with the value of the existing sites and the section 106 money from the new housing developments. Car parking has been a problem at peak times however the introduction of the Church Street car park and the Hopper bus, routing around the town and Doctor’s surgery which will start to operate when Heath Road is open will go some way to alleviate the problem until other sites can be found.

Quality that speaks for itself
Being a Town Councillor has its highs and lows, my high was representing Holt at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party and my low I think was standing with the keys on a cold Friday November evening at the public toilets waiting for Dynorod! I would be proud to carry on working for all the people of Holt and ask for your vote on Thursday 2nd May. BRYAN PAYNE X

The Passion of Flowers
Dear Jo, Our family would like to thank Rita and her team at The Passion of Flowers in Market Place, Holt for the succession of outstanding bouquets they have prepared for us. They have always listened to our requests regarding colour and perfume and everything has always been fresh and beautifully arranged. Rita is now taking a well-deserved break after having put so much of herself in running the business since 2001. Enjoy yourself with your family, Rita. Jennie and Rob Saines, Claire and Andrew.
Thank You
Dear Jo, Thank you to everyone who supported our Tombola, in Budgens of Holt, on Saturday 23rd March. We raised £117.83 for the DEBRA Charity. Veronica & Michael Pearson & Family
There are no words
Dear Jo, I refer to correspondence in the Holt Chronicle lately, discussing the (or a) Messiah – who, what where, when and even how many. Riveting, albeit a trifle arcane, it has, indubitably, kept the inhabitants of the Holt area agog awaiting its revelatory conclusion. It is both ironic and tragic that, meanwhile, the ‘seven Christian virtues’ are being jettisoned wholesale. Our current Great Leader is proud of producing a ‘hostile environment’ for immigrants; many (I reference personal conversations) voted to leave the EU because ‘they’ may be given somewhere to live, or otherwise benefit. So much for Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Neither do some of our elected representatives care to pay our debts, monetary or moral –it has been seriously suggested by some that, having committed to contribute to various EU projects, we should now refuse to pay. And while, almost a year ago, the government finally agreed that interpreters (merely 50 or so) who aided our forces in Afghanistan should be allowed sanctuary from reprisals in this country, ostensibly honouring the moral debt we undoubtedly owe. To date, none have been allowed in. Now, as we detach ourselves , haughtily critical of the EUs motes, we neglect our own beams , including a flawed electoral system, no democracy but an elected dictatorship, growing inequality and a parliament with many more fearful for their own careers and party advantage than of not doing the best thing for the country. Since 1973, we have had the advantages of equals in union. Separating, we will not “get our country back” for it was never lost. Just part of something greater. Our actions define us as a nation; self-obsessed, mean-spirited, short-sighted, inflexible, cynical…. Perhaps we should have heeded the real message.
John Stelzer
Reply to Maurice
Dear Jo, Maurice Gray plays with words as well as history. Whereas late Judaism and early Christianity owed something to Zoroastrianism, the theology underlying narratives like the "Acts of the Apostles" (which he cites) differs significantly from the "Way" of Buddha Gotama. Jesus can be seen as an "enlightened" guide - but not "mythical". David Ashton
Reply to David Ashton
Dear Jo, David Ashton’s description (Letters, Issue 422) of Ken Akehurst’s book “Everyone’s Guide to the Hereafter” as a “channeled” spiritualist fantasy about the Other Side, demands a reply. In the 1950s, I read an account, from “Psychic news” via B.H. Wood’s monthly magazine “Chess”, of the experience of a spirit medium, Bertha Harris. I paraphrase: Bertha was quite a small girl and her father, a very good chess player, had an ivory set which he kept locked away. But one day, while he was outside for a moment, she found the key and got the set out. Her father, suddenly returning, was about to scold her when he saw that all the pieces were set up for a game. Thinking she couldn’t play and that it would be a subtle telling-ff, he challenged her to a game. But, uncannily, Bertha completely outplayed him and, to his astonishment, he lost. Thinking she’d been taking secret lessons, he asked her how she had learnt to play. “Oh,” explained Bertha, “I see a man’s hand. It has got the tips of two fingers missing, and it shows me the moves to make”. Her farther put the set away at once and refused to talk about it. Some years later, he told he: “Your grandfather was a champion player and we often played together, but I never won a game from him. And, in a farming accident, he lost the tips of two of his fingers.” No way could Bertha have made those details up by chance, so we conclude that Bertha really did have communication with a higher state of consciousness (including what we know as Heaven) to which we can migrate on death. And Ken Akehurst, aforementioned, would have been another one with that ability. Over the years I have read of other instances of this other-world communication, including one from my own sphere of chess problems. Of course, there have been charlatans who have falsely claimed this ability for personal gain, and these tricksters are the ones who give true spirit mediums a bad name. I will consider more of David Ashton’s difficulties in future letters. Yours ever, Cedric Lytton.

Community Big Screen
Dear Jo, Having got together as a group, had a bite to eat together and then all gone along to watch ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (on the big screen, with surround sound), at the Holt Community Centre on Saturday evening last, what a lovely evening we all had – that is we, along with the best part of a hundred other people. And what a vote of approval for Carolyn Burn, June Clarke and the team’s new initiative and efforts. The mood and good-will was infectious. We were only sorry, we confessed to each other as we left, that we hadn’t had the confidence to clap and sing-along with the film. Next time perhaps. (Indeed, many were keen to watch the same film again next week!) Perhaps you might be tempted to, either get together as a group, or just come along on your own (others do that too), to the next cinema event, ‘A Star is Born’ on Friday the 17th May at 7.30pm. Maybe see you there. Phil Barrett
Budgens Car Park
Dear Jo, I recently parked in Budgens car park and, as I was going to stay for over the hour, I entered my registration number – paid £1.70 and was issued with my ticket which I put in the car. A couple of weeks later I received a parking penalty notice stating I had stayed over the official time and had to pay £60. Luckily enough I had kept the ticket and saw I had nearly an hour left. I sent off a letter enclosing a copy of the ticket. I received a second letter stating that parking at this site is subject to whether the correct and full registration number was entered correctly. On looking at my ticket properly I noticed that the last digit of my reg. number was missing. I did not realize it at the time and thought I had entered the full number – so paid the penalty charge. This letter is just to warn people to ensure that before they press the button on the machine to issue the ticket that they check that the Reg. No is entered fully and correctly otherwise it can prove to be a costly mistake as in my case. Sincerely S Watson
Dear Jo, The following notice appeared in the ‘Deaths’ column of ‘The Times’ on Monday 15th April 2019. UK Democracy on 29th March 2019, aged 312. It was with sad regret that Democracy died quietly in her sleep at 11pm, on the 29th March 2019. The cause of death was by foul play and the culprits have

Dear friends, Whatever your faith or none, surely no-one could not have failed to be moved by the recent dramatic scenes of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris being engulfed in flames. Almost 850 years of history totally destroyed as fire consumed the medieval roof timbers and vaulted ceilings collapsed. A symbol of national pride the Cathedral in so many ways represents France and the destruction of such an historic monument tears at the heart of the nation. People expressed feelings of grief, loss, sadness, horror and disbelief as they watched their cathedral burn. But of course our cathedral churches, like our parish churches, are much more than historic monuments and tourist attractions which tell the story of the history of a nation. Built to the glory of God, Notre Dame Cathedral, like our own Westminster Abbey, is a place of daily worship. It is sacred space and a holy place that has been set aside for the worship of God and sanctified by prayer. It is a place where heaven and earth meet and people can encounter the divine. The very stones, fabric, art and stained glass bear witness to the faith of the Church in Christ Jesus, the faith received from the Apostles and taught down the centuries. Such destruction tears at the heart of the christian faith as well as a nation and is deeply felt not just in France but around the world. Occuring on the Monday of Holy Week, the feelings expressed by onlookers as they witnessed the fire no doubt resonated with the emotions of a week in which the church recalled the passion, death and burial of Christ Jesus. The crucifixion of Christ was horrific, his burial accompanied with the sadness of grief. Our Lord’s first disciples were over come with their sense of loss and they despaired at what they had witnessed and experienced. Yet just as Christ rose from the tomb on Easter day no doubt out of the ashes the Cathedral will rise again. The morning after the fire the news that the whole of the interior of the cathedral was not lost and much was still intact was met with some relief. It could have been much, much worse. The commitment to rebuild and to restore offer hope and is being met with generosity from all over the world. Given time time the Cathedral will once again give glory to God and bear witness to the faith of the Church in the risen Christ.

HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUB
A Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable
We held our Annual General Meeting on Monday 8th April, which was well attended. It has been a successful year with very interesting talks, a super Club outing to Bressingham and quite a few new members joining us. Sadly, Gillian Clarke and Tricia Frost are retiring from the Committee after serving for several years but, thankfully, Jean Jacob and John Green are willing to replace them. Tricia and Gillian received plants in appreciation of their service and bouquets were presented to Janet Hebburn, Beryl Noel and Ann Alborough, who provide us with refreshments at the start of each meeting. The members voted to increase the annual subscription from £10 to £12, which will be due at next month’s meeting. This still offers very good value as we have 8 illustrated talks each year and discount at 4 local plant suppliers, plus a Christmas social and at least one Club outing. As well as our successful raffle, next month we are trialling a bring and buy plant stall. After the AGM, Rosie Gutteridge presented a slideshow of photos submitted by members, titled, “Our favourite things in the garden”. It’s the first time we have tried this and, after a technical glitch, was well received by the members. If you would like to join our Club, come along to our next meeting on 13th May at High Kelling Village Hall at 7p.m. or contact Tanya at hkgcsecretary@gmail.com.
Life on the Farm – part 3 by Leslie Kinsley
I had never been outside Norfolk till I started driving the lorry and had no maps. I relied on road signs and verbal instructions from my boss. He said ‘If you get to Oxford Street go along it till you see a building with a large Guinness on it and turn off there to cross the river. The market is just there. If you hit the first set of traffic lights on green at a good speed they will be green for you the whole way’. One time I tried this when someone else had loaded my lorry to allow me a couple of hours sleep. He was not good at loading safely and my dash for the lights made several of the cabbages tumbled off onto Oxford Street! A policeman arrived and started to question me. ‘What is your load?’ he asked ‘Fresh cabbages’ I replied. ‘How many would you like?’ He took a few and let me off! As cabbages were mainly a winter crop, I often had to drive in bad weather. Fog was difficult as there was no lighting or cat’s eyes then and I just tried to keep an eye on the road edge. Snow and ice were worse. Gritting back then was a bloke with a wheelbarrow who scattered a bit of sand at busy junctions, no gritting lorries and snow ploughs. One afternoon when I was due to drive to London it came on the radio that Epping Forest was blocked. This was on my route. ‘What do you think? ‘my Boss said. ‘This load is sprouts and they will not keep’ ‘If I can take one of the men with me and a couple of shovels I will give it a try’ I answered. ‘Take who you like.’ I chose Derek from Briningham as he was easy to collect on the way and was as strong as an ox. We had a slow run but no real trouble with digging as there was no other traffic about and I could drive in the middle of the road. At one point however I came across a fallen tree. I had no chance of braking safely so I shouted to Derek to hang on to something tightly and aimed for the thin end of the tree. The lorry bounced over it and we continued on to the London market. When we arrived, the manager was just about to leave as he had nothing to sell but a few swedes.
Street collection
I, Samantha Bishop give notice that the Street Collections which took place in Holt for The Brain Tumour Charity on Saturday 6th & 13th April raised the sum of £210.74. The sum of £0.00 was incurred in respect of expenses and payments in connection with the collection. We would like to thank everyone’s kind generosity and all those that stopped to speak to us and share their stories of how brain tumours have affected them and their family and friends.

Extra day care places created for Holt and villages
PICTURES AND SOUNDS QUIZ SUCCESS!
On Saturday April 13th, Briston held its second Pictures and Sounds Quiz, and in a packed Copeman Centre, the happy crowd pitted their wits against the sound, picture and video questions that came up fast and furious on the big screen, and also an interval game where you had to guess what was in ten sealed bags by feel alone which contained such various items as a printer cartridge, a piece of root ginger, and a pair of handcuffs!
Blakeney’s popular Glaven Centre is expanding its activities to create twenty new day care places for older people living in Holt and the twelve villages of the Glaven Valley. The centre has been providing care, entertainment and health related services for older people for over 40 years and in 2006 was honoured to receive The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for Voluntary Services. A small number of employed staff, including a qualified nurse, work with a large group of volunteers to enhance the lives of people who may otherwise be housebound. They enjoy going out to socialise and the opportunities to participate in activities such as quizzes, puzzles, exercise sessions, games, musical entertainment, craft hobbies and talks. Options range between the Lunch Club, providing an opportunity to get out of the house for a couple of hours twice a week, and between one and four days a week day care, enjoying all the facilities, care and support available. The Glaven Centre’s flexible arrangements suit both couples and single people. The day normally begins with morning coffee and later the delicious two course lunches, prepared and cooked on the premises, are a highlight. Minibus transport is available for those attending day care services and car transport for the Lunch Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays. “There are many people caring for parents and partners who would benefit from a break a few times a week too, knowing that their partner or family member is well cared for, in a safe environment.” says Maureen Buckey, Glaven Centre Co-ordinator. ‘I’m pleased to arrange visits for people to see what the Centre offers, including bathing services, podiatry, hairdressing and a hearing aid clinic.” More information is available from the web site, www.glavencaring.co.uk, or contact Maureen on 01263 740762/email glavencentre1@btinternet.com.
The event was a fund-raiser for the Copeman Centre itself, and at just £5 per head for entry (which included a delicious Jacket Potato Supper, with loads of different fillings, a dessert, and teas and coffees!) after all costs had been taken out, a profit of £273.70 was made for the Centre but more importantly, it was a fun evening where everyone joined in the spirit of the event, and had a brilliant time! The next quiz will be on Saturday October 26th. 2019, and if you would like to come along, why not let us have your ’phone number, and we will contact you a few weeks before the event to sort out your tickets - you can do this now by ‘phoning Carol on 01263 860844. Q: How do you get a dog to stop digging in the garden? A: Take away his shovel! Q: What is the easiest way to count a herd of cattle? A: With a cowculator. Q: What happened when the lion ate the comedian? A: He felt funny. Q: How does a mouse feel after it takes a shower? A: Squeaky clean!

Wells-next-the-Sea Men’s Shed
Gardening quotes.
A Men’s Shed is a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practice skills and enjoy making and mending. The difference is that garden sheds and their activities are often solitary in nature while Men’s Sheds are the opposite. They’re about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, and of course a lot of laughter. Members work on individual projects and come together to work on community-based projects and share their skills over a cuppa. The Wells Men’s Shed has developed over the last 6 months and we now have a Shed which is being renovated. Two thirds of the Shed has been fitted out and ready to use and the rest is work in progress. We have an inclusive policy to membership, including ladies, with the limitation that you must be over 18 years. The Wells Men’s Shed, is in fact, a Portakabin sited in the grounds of the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway complex. At the moment we are limited to what we can do as we do not have electricity which means we are working in traditional ways mostly on woodworking projects, or doing cycle or furniture repairs etc. As an example of what we do we have been recycling timber and unwanted pallets and converting them into useful items such as Planters. So our Men's Shed welcomes people with a flair for or interest in DIY, especially - but not exclusively - woodworking. Previous experience of working with the machinery is helpful, but not essential, and we are very health and safety conscious for obvious reasons. If woodwork is not your interest, bring your own DIY project along; or if you would just like to come along to meet the guys over a coffee and to see what they are doing, you are more than welcome to join us for a ‘bodge, banter and brew’. We are now seeking new members and if you think this is for you, then please visit our website for more information: www.wellsnexttheseamensshed.weebly.com or phone us on 07486 524603, or email us at mensshedwells@gmail.com
“I consider every plant hardy until I have killed it myself.” Politician and botanist Sir Peter Smithers “If you have a garden and a library you have everything you need.” Roman philosopher Cicero “You know you’re a hardcore gardener if you deadhead flowers in other people’s gardens.” Writer Sue Careless “Gardening requires lots of water – most of it in the form of perspiration.” Cartoonist Lou Erickson “The best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.” Gardener’s adage, author unknown “Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made By singing, ‘Oh how beautiful!’ and sitting in the shade While better men than we go out and start their working lives By grubbing weeds from garden paths with broken dinner knives.” Rudyard Kipling

Evan’s Crab
What do you get when you mix a fast bowler with a two Rosette restaurant…? Well, this summer you could end up with a delicious ginger, coriander and chilli crab dish, courtesy of an old friendship and the local cricket club… As a fearsome paceman for Cromer and Norfolk CC, Evan Tuck was already a good friend of the Graveling family, and when the Grove opened its restaurant in 2012 Evan and his wife Kerrie were one Evan Tuck and Reis Khalil of the first couples to visit. “Those first couple of years were quite an experience,” remembers Richard Graveling, a former teammate of Evan’s at Cromer, “so it was always good to see a friendly face whenever ET and Kerrie came in for dinner. “ET is a great chef himself and, after tasting his crab, I thought that it had to go onto the summer menu (with some beautiful finishing touches from our head chef Reis Khalil).” “It’s a lovely recipe from the (now extinct) Red Lion in Upper Sheringham,” says Evan. “I’ve added some coriander, cheese and chillies, experimented lots to get the flavours just right, and I’m now really happy with it. “I love cooking just as much as I used to enjoy knocking over opposition batsmen for Cromer and I’m chuffed to see one of my home efforts on the menu!” To book your table call 01263 512412 or visit thegrovecromer.co.uk

Smokers urged to cut risk of home fires
North Norfolk Photographic Society North Norfolk Photographic Society welcomed Ian Wilson ARPS to Holt on Wednesday 3rd April.
Ian Wilson
Smokers are being warned about the deadly dangers of the habit - especially when tired – as Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service joins forces with other services for the Fire Kills campaign. Cigarettes and other smoking products cause just over a third of all accidental fire fatalities in the home. Smoking is also the single biggest cause of accidental fires in the home, often because of careless behaviour such as smoking in bed or not taking care after drinking alcohol. And when smokers fall asleep with a lit cigarette in hand, their proximity to the resulting fire seriously lowers their chance of making an escape. Smokers are advised to ‘Put it Out, Right Out’ whenever they light up; to install smoke alarms on every level of the home and to test them regularly. Without a working smoke alarm, you are at least seven times more likely to die in an accidental fire in the home.
Ian is a member of Cambridge Camera Club and a well known speaker, judge and photographer. The subject of his talk was on post-processing in Photoshop - but he opened by saying that he would mostly be dealing with Lightroom and in particular with processing RAW images.
RAW images are those stored by advanced cameras in as close to the form that they were ‘seen’ by the camera as possible, the idea being that there is no automatic adjustment to the image in the camera - it is left to the user to make all the adjustments later.
These simple steps can help prevent a cigarette fire in the home:
Ian had asked members to bring some images to be ‘adjusted’ and the most impressive, perhaps, was a series of 4 images taken on the same spot (using a tripod of course) whilst the sun set. This resulted in 4 quite different images, one seriously under-exposed, one over-exposed and two in between. Each image was adjusted and then ‘masks’ were created and then when combined the result was a picture where the cliffs and rocks were not too dark, the sky and sunset were not too bright.
• Never smoke in bed. Take care when you’re tired – it’s very easy to fall asleep while your cigarette is still burning and set furniture alight • Never smoke when under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If your lit cigarette starts a fire you could be less able to escape. • Put it out, right out! Make sure your cigarette is fully extinguished • Fit a smoke alarm and test it weekly. A working smoke alarm can buy you valuable time to get out, stay out and call 999 • Never leave lit cigarettes, cigars or pipes unattended – they can easily overbalance as they burn down • Use a proper, heavy ashtray that can’t tip over easily and is made of a material that won’t burn.
Suffice to say, there was a lot of technical detail which the more advanced members found invaluable.
Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org/
Norfolk’s Chief Fire Officer Stuart Ruff said: "Every five days, someone dies from a fire caused by cigarettes or smoking materials in the UK. Despite a fall in the overall number of fires caused by these products, it’s still the biggest cause of accidental fires in the home. “Bad habits such as smoking whilst in bed or under the influence of alcohol increases the risk of falling asleep before you ‘put it out, right out’. “Make sure you have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home and test them regularly. A working smoke alarm can give you the extra time you need to escape if the worst should happen.” Dr Louise Smith, Director of Public Health at Norfolk County Council, said: “As well as being a fire risk, smoking remains one of the most important causes of early death and health inequalities in Norfolk. “We have specialist services that can help smokers to quit – Smokefree Norfolk will discuss the best method of quitting with you, come up with a plan and support you throughout your quitting journey. You can contact Smokefree Norfolk at www.smokefreenorfolk.nhs.uk or by calling 0800 0854113. “And if you are not quite ready to quit, we recommend switching to vaping, which is better for your health and reduces the risk of fires.”

Holt and District Probus Club
In early April, Holt and District Probus Club multitasked. As well as enjoying their liver and bacon, they held their Annual General Meeting and were entertained by a speaker. At the Annual General Meeting, the usual business was transacted; Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer all gave their reports of another successful year. And John Mangan was elected Chairman and was presented with his chain of office by acting chairman Alan Mason. Then – the talk. This was given by Claire Mannion – A Zip though the Signs of the Zodiac. Claire is an astrologer and has been so since her teens. She says “a chart is the biggest, most far reaching map of all. A map that allows you navigate the tricky path of your life, illuminating the stopping off points and future destinations like no other map can. I was hooked and still am.” Claire projected pictures onto the screen of each of the twelve signs of the zodiac and explained the main features of each, though adding that a detailed horoscope will involve not just the main zodiac sign but also particular events at a person’s moment of birth – particularly if there are particular conjunctions of, say a planet. During her talk, Claire invited members to “own up” to being born under each of the signs – and said what she expected to be in the nature of those people concerned – with some measure of success! Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782. Refer also to https://holtprobusclub.wordpress.com/

Pain Relief – The Acupuncture Way Jim limped painfully into the Consulting room. He hardly knew whether to keep standing or try and sit. He managed to lie on his side on the couch, and we started treatment, however Jim’s back was so sore he could only bear very gentle pressure. Fortunately, the meridian wave method uses points on the extremities of the affected muscle groups, and I was able to treat him. He went out still with pain but in the next few days he was considerably better. Jim is a fictional character, but I have treated many real people who have acute pain and have a similar case history and outcome. Acupuncture has been used for the alleviation and sometimes resolution of pain for over two thousand years, and still going. Some recent studies have been done where acupuncturists are working alongside doctors in Western hospitals. For instance, in Israeli hospitals, pain relief is often given with acupuncture needles. The pace of these research projects (most of which verify Chinese theories) is hotting up, with a lot more scientific papers being published relating to Acupuncture than any other complementary therapy. In the last four years alone the number of conditions for which this treatment has been rated as very effective (80% success rate) has risen to include migraines and headaches, low back pain, knee osteoarthritis, allergic rhinitis, post chemo nausea, post-op pain, post-op nausea and vomiting. More studies are in the pipe line, and no doubt some of these treatments, which have minimal or no side-effects, will eventually come to our hospitals. But they are already available at Holt Consulting Rooms. Richard Lamb, MBAcC Richard can be contacted at Holt Consulting Rooms on 01263 711712

Back to the future for flagship youth project
An award-winning Norfolk youth project has gone “back to the future” and is being run by its home town once more. The Holt Youth Project has been held up as a beacon of community run youth work, supporting youngsters to reach their full potential. It merged with East Anglian based young people’s charity Ormiston Families in 2014 in a move to safeguard future funding. But the two have now agreed to sever the partnership, putting the project back under the control of a local set of trustees. Manager Julie Alford explained: “We are very excited to go back to our roots, working more closely with our local community once again and providing for the needs of its young people. We are proud to have turned many lives around – including a young man who struggled with mainstream schooling to found new skills through a cookery workshop and is now an apprentice at a local restaurant.” Chairman of the trustees Kevin Abbs said: “Thanks to re-energised local funding support the project is thrilled to be fulfilling an ever increasing need for supporting young people, not just in Holt but across wider North Norfolk. We are pleased that Ormiston Families, as a parting gift, are refurbishing the centre with a clean-up. Allan Myatt, Ormiston Families’ chief executive officer said: “We are absolutely delighted that after three years of caretaking the Holt Youth Centre, we are now able to hand the running of the centre back to a local Board of Trustees. The centre has been rooted in the Holt community for over 20 years and it has been a privilege to work with the volunteers and staff who are dedicated to supporting young people from across north Norfolk to reach their full potential” To drive its new future forward Holt Youth Project is applying for a National Lottery grant to back its full range of work, but it also seeking community fundraising. It is also keen to hear from people who can volunteer with sessions including woodworking, allotment gardening, crafts and they also need a treasurer. Inspirational irises at Creake Abbey’s 2019 Plant Lovers’ Day
Creake Abbey’s highly popular Plant Lovers’ Day returns on Saturday 25th May 2019 to this beautiful monastic site three miles south of Burnham Market in north Norfolk. Over 30 specialist plant nurseries from Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and beyond will be showcasing their finest perennials, exotics, bulbs, shrubs, climbers and carnivorous plants. More than 1,600 visitors from across East Anglia are expected to attend, making the Creake Abbey Plant Lovers’ Day an unmissable horticultural event for the region. Once again, proceeds from the event will go to Wells Community Hospital Trust, which provides flexible and integrated health and wellbeing services for the community in nearby Wells-next-the-Sea Newcomers this year include two highly regarded specialist iris nurseries. Irises are a consistently popular plant with British gardeners thanks to their versatility, striking velvet petals and vertical, sword-like leaves. Alongside their history of traditional use in the gardens of some of Britain’s greatest stately homes, irises create style and structure in a meadow, at the water’s edge or when used in a mixed border. Irises are easy to grow and tolerant of extremes of heat and cold. Visitors will be treated to a florally-inspired menu both in the Café and in the pop-up restaurant in the Main Barn featuring modern salads and delicious cakes. They may also browse the wares and services of Creake Abbey’s five resident independent shops. The gate opens at 10am and closes at 4pm. Entrance to the plant fair is £4 per adult and there is no charge for under 16s. The rest of the site is free to visitors. Once again, Creake Abbey is delighted to give all profits from the day to Wells Community Hospital. Over the past eleven years Creake Abbey has raised over £24,000 for Wells Community Hospital Trust at Wells-next-the-Sea through its annual Plant Lovers’ Day and subsequent Irises by Seagate Irises (© Seagate Irises) donations. The Hospital has been providing a wide range of services for its community in Norfolk for more than 100 years. Alongside clinics such as Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Audiology, Podiatry and many others, the hospital runs a dementia hub with activities every Wednesday morning and a dementia friendly garden which is open to all. Wells Community Hospital is proud to work alongside local business providers to create a Wells Dementia Friendly Community which is committed to understanding, respecting and supporting people with dementia. tĞĚŶĞƐĚĂLJƐ ƌƚƐ ĂŶĚ ƌĂŌƐ ĨŽƌ Ăůů Registered charity no. 1154540

National campaign targets drivers using mobile phones
Police in Norfolk will be targeting drivers who text and talk behind the wheel as part of a week-long enforcement campaign. Operation Ringtone, which started yesterday, will run until Sunday (15-28 April 2019) coinciding with a nationwide campaign led by the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC). Officers from the Roads and Armed Policing Team and Road Casualty Reduction Team will be carrying-out extra patrols using both marked and unmarked cars and motorcycles, all fitted with cameras to obtain evidence to help ensure successful prosecutions. During the last campaign, which ran in September, officers issued 57 Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) to drivers using a mobile phone whilst driving. Chief Inspector Kris Barnard, head of the Roads Armed Policing Team, said: "Research shows you are four times more likely to be in a crash if you use your phone. "If drivers are using their phones they are distracted from the job at hand, meaning they are less likely to be aware of potential hazards and have slower reaction times. "Driving while using a mobile phone is one of the ‘fatal four’ offences which makes you more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a collision, along with drink driving, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.” email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

The RAF Radar Museum has become yesterday’s news… wrapping chips!
In a novel marketing ploy, the RAF Radar museum has produced its own newspaper so that fish and chips can we wrapped up in it. In collaboration with Ken’s Fish and Chip shop in Wroxham in the Broads, the museum is providing the printed newsprint wrappers for the takeaway service. The Newspaper includes a range of museum news and carries a voucher for a £1 off admission for visitors bringing the voucher with them to the museum. Museum marketing manager Greg Hayman said: “We were looking for interesting ways to connect with potential visitors and we thought we would try this idea to combine great eating with a sense of nostalgia for how chips were wrapped in yesteryear. If it proves popular, we hope to extend it throughout the season and maybe to chip shops in other towns. We like to think that we are making news and this way we are... quite literally!” Chip shop manager Michael said: “We thought this was a great idea and offers our customers something a bit different and we are teaming up with a great local visitor attraction so it’s a win win for us both!” The “newspaper” chip paper has been designed and printed by Century Printers in Stalham. In other news, the Radar Museum is celebrating because it has become the number 1 visitor attraction in according to TripAdvisor. Greg Hayman continued: “Following its most successful year ever, the RAF Radar Museum has opened for the 2019 season with an air of celebration as it has recently taken over the top spot as the best local visitor attraction according to those that know - the people who visit it. We couldn’t wish for a better start to the year!” Despite being a top visitor attraction, it has not always been well known as the museum sits on the site of one of our most Top Secret military bases and didn't even appear on a map until recently. That all changed when the Cold War ended, and part of the base became a museum. The museum is a great place to visit for a day out in Norfolk and is fun for all the family. There are over 20 exhibition rooms as well as outdoor exhibits. Plus, there are 3 free presentations running throughout the day, one in the WWII Operations Room and one in the Cold War Operations Room and one on the Bloodhound surface to air missile system. You can relive the experience of RAF staff who monitored the skies keeping us safe during the war and during the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Thaxters Site - HOLT
WEYBOURNE WI CELEBRATE IN STYLE WITH THE GIGGLY PIG
Great News
I have been very concerned latterly about the state of the old Thaxters site and have received several comments from residents regarding this. So, I am delighted to be able to report that, having spent some considerable time in discussions with the Developer, action will soon be taken; my nagging has paid off! The developer has already had a meeting with the contractor who is going to clear the site and discussed the finer details of the job. I have had assurances that the work will be done on the site to greatly improve its appearance and the aim will be for this to be done by the Easter period. Thanks go to the Developer for listening to the views of residents. I have been acutely aware of the severe problems experienced by the whole Supermarket trade, which hit very soon after this land was purchased for development. There were also many problems created locally which prevented ALDI going forward or further agreements taking place. I for one am delighted with the perseverance of the Developer, after many drawbacks; none of which were of his making. I also know there have been many attempts made to engage other Supermarkets during this time span. However, there is now important news that one of the deals pursued for a Food Store on the site has been ongoing and has reached the stage of initial agreements being prepared. When the legalities and signing of contracts are complete, there will be a full announcement. Maggie Prior, Mayor of Holt
On 3rd April over 50 members and visitors met at the village hall to celebrate the 11th birthday of Weybourne WI. After a rousing rendition of ‘Jerusalem’ and a short business meeting, we were entertained by the incredible story of Essex bad girl, made good, Tracy Mackness. From an early age, Tracy was expected to help with her parents fruit and veg stall on Romford Market. Tracy preferred this to school and couldn’t wait to leave. She fell in with a bad crowd, which eventually resulted in her being sent to prison for 10 years, following involvement in a drugs crime. After initial despair at her sentence, Tracy decided to make the best of prison life and qualified as a gym instructor. However, after transferring to an open prison, she found her true vocation and trained to be a pig farmer. She left prison with numerous qualifications in pig husbandry and with help from friends set up her own business, The Giggly Pig. Her career took off when she won a competition, ‘Trading Places’, run by Barclays Bank. She made headlines in several newspapers and was featured on tv and radio. Now, 11 years later, she runs a successful business and admits that going to prison was the best thing that ever happened to her, as it turned her life around! Her Giggly Pig pork products are sold at farmers’ markets and events throughout the country and her autobiography has recently been published. There was the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of sausages, before the afternoon concluded with tea and a selection of delicious cakes, which had been made by members.

The room was full of pregnant women and their partners, and the antenatal class was in full swing. The teacher then announced, ‘Ladies, exercise is good for you. Walking is especially beneficial. And, gentlemen, it wouldn't hurt you to take the time to go walking with your partner!’ The room got quiet. Finally, a man in the middle of the group raised his hand. ‘Yes?’ replied the teacher. ‘Is it alright if she carries a golf bag while we walk?’ There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out. Terence Blacker in Concert
Sharrington Village Hall presents Terence Blacker in concert on Friday 7 June at 7.30pm. Terence Blacker is a singer-songwriter whose quirky, offbeat songs of contemporary life have been compared to the work of Jake Thackray, Tom Lehrer and even Jacques Brel. Celebrating the outsider, the misfit and the unseen, his songs range from the openly comic to the satirical and melancholy. He has played at folk clubs, festivals and theatres across the country, and took a one-man-show of songs and stories to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013. He wrote and presented Taboo-Be-Do!, a two-part history of politically incorrect music, for BBC Radio 4. His third CD Enough About Me, released in 2018, earned enthusiastic reviews in the national and music press. Tickets are just £10 each and are strictly limited in number. They are available by emailing Chris Abrams at abrams.chris2@gmail.com. We have a licensed bar and doors open at 7pm. Satnav postcode NR24 2AB. A directional map is on our website: www.sharrington.org.uk. Come and join us for an evening of fun and laughter!
Waterden Church Concert
With the major restoration of Waterden Church under way, the Friends of All Saints’ Waterden will be holding an exciting concert in aid of the church on Friday, 31 May at 7pm. The concert, which will take place at St Mary’s Church, South Creake, NR21 9LX, will feature an acclaimed group, the Mēla Quartet, a classical guitar ensemble who trained together at the Guildhall School of Music in London. The Mēla quartet brings together four exceptional guitarists who play with an “exalted level of perfection”, according to the music website Naxos.com. Their “musicianship makes you forget that you are listening to four guitars and carries you to a different sound world”, said Thérèse Wassily Saba in Gendai Guitar magazine. The group were International Guitar Foundation young artists in 2016 and have performed in venues such as King’s Place; Milton Court, the Barbican; and Jimi Hendrix’s bedroom (!) at the Handel Hendrix House in London where both Handel and Hendrix lived - at different times naturally. At our concert on 31 May, they will be playing J.S. Bach’s organ fugue in G minor and numbers from their new album “Pluck, Strum, and Hammer”. We are delighted to have booked them. Please support us by coming along. Tickets, £10 including buffet supper, from Sarah Prince-White 07775 084312 or princewhites@btinternet.com

It’s over!
Feeney’s Newsagents 27 Market Place HOLT Tel: 01263 713547
There’s nothing new about it, You’ll have heard it all before. Ageing man leaves ageing wife For a girl of twenty four. He really thinks she loves him, That he’s a sex god incarnate! How can he believe such utter tosh, With his paunch and balding pate? Our marriage lies in ruins, All the years both good and bad. I never thought he’d leave me, He’s older than her Dad! He’s grinning likea Cheshire cat, But in a while he’ll see; When she leaves him for a younger man, Well, he won’t come back to me! It’s over! Finished! Done with! He’s hurt me all he can. I’m better off without him. Good riddance, to a silly man!

Solution to No. 258: 1. Ne3, threats 2.Nd5, Nd1 and the black Q cannot play off the board to the left to stop both, compared with the symmetrical try 1. Na3? (threats 2. Nb5, Nb1) Qf5! Two more symmetrical tries are 1. Nb4? (2. Na2, Nd5) Qa8! And 1. Nd4? (2. Nb5, Ne2) Qe8! A Little gem in Miniature (7 units or less); 5 points if you found all of these. No. 259, the second of 3 two-movers in our own solving contests, was one of 6 problems set in the British Chess Problem Society’s intermediate solving competition at the end March, in which your correspondent won first prize. Never let it be said I set problems I can’t solve myself! All I’ll say here is that it has a very nice key-move. Difficulty 4.

Old and new in a Norfolk in by Richard Shepheard.
Ringstead is a village in north-west Norfolk just inland from the coastal town of Hunstanton. Its name is pure Danish, but after the Norman Conquest it became part of the demesne of the Le Strange family* who were powerful Bretons and on Duke William's left on that fateful day in 1066. The village inn, nowadays, is The Gin Trap and about thirty-five years ago a friend and I were taking some refreshment there. Coincidentally, Ringstead was the birthplace of my father's maternal grandparents, the Joices, who had been Norman knights at the conquest, but by the nineteenth century reduced to labouring life. The only photograph of my great-grandfather, Thomas Joice (1826-97) shows a man of immense durability and dignity. The light eyes, long, strong nose and broad chin bearing the stamp of a Norse ancestry, while his dress--velveteen breeches and gaiters, with a dark broadcloth coat--would have been his Sunday attire at chapel where he was a Wesleyan lay preacher. My companion on that evening came from the fens of Norfolk in a village on the River Wissey. This was less than ten miles from where that river runs through the extreme west end of Breckland where all my mother's forebears came from. He like most of them, was dark-haired and eyed with an almost swarthy complexion. It was entirely serendipitous that the landlord of The Gin Trap, knowing that I loved local history, dropped a book on our table with information which was absolutely kindred to the ethnics of our county. It was William Alfred Dutt's Norfolk: Cambridge County Geographies (1909)** which said: "At the present time many of the inhabitants of south-west Norfolk contrast strikingly with the rest of the people of the county, they have very dark hair and eyes, and photographs of them have been mistaken for Welsh people. The same type occurs in some parts of the fen district. These dark haired, dark eyed people are probably descendants of the Iberians who inhabited Norfolk in the prehistoric period when the inhabitants of our land had no knowledge of metals." I have seen the so-called Dark Welsh and know that Dutt's observation is absolutely apposite. I muse with fascination on the prospect that some of my forebears from places such as Weeting and Santon Downham may have been descended from those flint-miners of Iberian origin who worked the mines at Grime's Graves, and--to use Dutt's words--"had no knowledge of metals."
There will be demonstrations on food preparation and cooking from WI experts and chefs from the Dial House. Kids will have plenty to do, with hands-on food science experiments, competitions and trails.
The Festival will close with a community supper in the Town Hall. This will be a buffet featuring produce from our stall holders and other local suppliers. This will be an all ticket event. Tickets will be on sale in April though Very Nice Things, Reepham Farm Shop and the festival website.
This year’s main sponsor is Vattenfall who are developing the new off-shore wind generation facilities in the North Sea.
The Festival is organised by Reepham Rotary Club with help from other local volunteers. More help on the day is always welcomed.

SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY
At the April meeting of the Society, Peter Watts of the Norfolk and Norwich Philatelic Society presented part of his extensive collection of stamps and postal history from Belgium. As a child, Peter had a Belgian pen friend and the stamps on these letters provided the basis for a lifetime of collecting foreign stamps. Over 30 years ago he decided to

These stamps, plus special railway parcel postage stamps and postage due stamps also formed part of Peter’s excellent display, which he presented with great enthusiasm. As part of the Society’s 50th anniversary celebrations, all members present were given a specially designed commemorative mug and Peter received one of these too, as well as a certificate for his presentation. Patients and Carers in North Norfolk
Patients and carers in North Norfolk are being asked what’s important to them when it comes to the health and care they receive from local NHS services. With growing pressure on the NHS – people living longer, more people living with long-term conditions and lifestyle choices affecting people’s health – changes are needed to make sure everybody gets the support they need. The Government is investing an extra £20bn a year in the NHS and health bosses have produced a Long Term Plan, setting out all the things it wants health services to do better for people across the country. This includes making it easier for people to access support closer to home and via technology, doing more to help people stay well, and providing better support for people with long-term health conditions. But whilst the national plan has set some clear goals, it’s up to local people to tell the NHS what’s important to them and how they think services should be delivered in their local communities. Healthwatch Norfolk are asking all patients, along with their families and carers to share their views on what matters to them to ensure their voice helps shape local priorities. For anyone in the North Norfolk area a focus group will take place on Tuesday 7th May 16.30-19.30 at Holt Community Centre. To book your place please contact Healthwatch Norfolk on 01953 856 029 or sign up via Eventbrite. You can also share your views via an online survey available at www.healthwatchnorfolk.co.uk

focus his collection on Belgium, from both the philatelic and historical aspects and his passion for the subject was evident to us all! His display started with covers from the prestamp era of postage in the mid 1700s, when Belgium was part of the Austrian Netherlands and not a country in its own right. He showed examples of the first imperforate stamps to be produced and of all subsequent issues up to the end of the first World War. Belgium is well known as a country that holds major exhibitions, for which special stamps and labels have often been issued.

Budgens of Holt – Sponsored Charity Walk
Take To The Water With Blakeney Rowing Club
The rowing season at Blakeney is now going at full pace with outings taking place every week in a variety of weather. Several new rowers have taken part in sessions in the club’s two skiffs, Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan, and have been impressed with the welcome and, of course, with the experience of being on the water. There have been many exciting events over the last few weeks. For example, on 19th and 20th April club members rowed alongside the ladies of the Norfolk BrOARds who are training to row the Atlantic. Blakeney crews accompanied the intrepid girls into Wells Harbour and, the next day, along the coast between Wells and Sheringham. The next eagerly anticipated competitive event will be the Hanse Festival in King’s Lynn on 11th and 12th May. Let’s hope the club can do as well as last year and bring back many trophies after racing on the Ouse. If you want to experience skiff rowing for yourselves, come along to the annual Push The Boat Out weekend on 18th and 19th May. This is an opportunity to try rowing, and sailing, regardless of your level of experience. Guidance is readily available in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. I hope this article gives a sense of the wealth of activities in which the “Crabbers” are involved. If you are interested in experiencing rowing, socially or competitively, contact Tom on 01263 761750; other information is on the club website at crablakeney.wordpress.com Remember, there is no necessity to race. Simply come and enjoy rowing on the waters around Blakeney Point in pleasant company. Barry Howes.
Many congratulations to all 13 members of the C T Baker Budgens of Holt team, who completed a sponsored walk in aid of the store’s charity of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk.
