Artists from North Norfolk get set to invite the public into their studios

Hundreds of artists from across the region are preparing to throw open their studio doors to the public as part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2019. The event, which has firmly established itself as one of the biggest open studio schemes in the country, will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. The 16-day celebration of Norfolk’s artistic community runs from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 9 June 2019. The free event will see more than 430 artists taking part across 250 venues throughout the county opening their doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work and practice. In North Norfolk, 75 artists and nine groups will be taking part. As well as the hundreds of artists taking part, numerous Norfolk schools will be exhibiting in the scheme. Art Trails will also be in place across the county, allowing audiences to visit a number of artists in a particular area, stopping at studios and local attractions along the way. In North Norfolk five school groups are taking part (Antingham & Southrepps Primary School, Hindringham C of E Primary School, Walsingham C of E Primary School, Kelling C of E Primary School and Blakeney C of E Primary School) Robert Downie work in progress and six art trails have been organised by artists participating in the scheme. These are the Cromer Art Trail, Happisburgh Art Trail, North Walsham to Southrepps Art Trail, The Smallburgh Small Art Trail, Wells-Next-the-Sea Art Trail and 10 artists, 7 locations. Throughout the duration of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios many of the artists will be holding additional events, demonstrations and workshops. Artists taking part are working in a diverse range of art forms and techniques including mosaic, ceramics, printing, jewellery, textiles, painting, papercutting, glass work, sculpture and wood turning. Internationally renowned artists as well as artists new to the scheme take part each year. Alongside the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios fortnight, North Norfolk artists will be hosting three taster exhibitions at The Old Workshop Gallery, Corpusty (11 May to 9 June), Cromer Library (2 – 30 May) and North Walsham Library (13 May – 10 June). Wells Division: Previously divided between Glaven, Priory and Walsingham Wards the division is now shared by six of the newly designated NNDC wards. I am awaiting confirmation of the allocation, but parishioners will know from their voting cards to which ward their parish is assigned and will have the opportunity to meet their district councillors at parish meetings. Congratulations to all newly elected, returning and co-opted town and parish councilors. Wells-next-the-Sea Recycling Centre Re-use Shop: To be open Saturday 8th June 2019. BBfN Norfolk and New Housing Developments: Happily I am hearing more about plans for affordable housing for local residents. And to ensure such housing is equipped for broadband it is important for developers of new sites to register with ‘Openreach’. It is important because State aid rules mean NCC’s Better Broadband for Norfolk programme can only provide a solution for postcodes that existed at the time when its contract was being created. For sites of 30 units or more Openreach install Fibre to the Premises at no cost to the developer. For developments smaller than 30 units there is now has a sliding scale. The link for developers to register is: https://www.ournetwork.openreach.co.uk/property-developers/site-registration.aspx Children’s Centres: If you google ‘Action for Children’ you will find information regarding this organisation which has been appointed to run the remaining 15 children’s centres. We await its plans. Mobile Libraries: Parish Councils should by now have received uptodate information regarding provision of mobile libraries for its parish. Again, I encourage councillors and residents to share information regarding this excellent service. Cabinet System: Norfolk County Council has now moved back to the cabinet system. For details follow this rather tortuous google search: ‘Norfolk.gov.uk’: Look for the sub-menu: ‘What we do and how we work’ and select the option: ‘Councillors, meetings, decisions and elections’. Then from the next group of menus select ‘Committees, agendas and recent decisions’ and then select ‘Cabinet’ which lists cabinet members and is then followed by a link to ‘Committee details, including meeting dates, members, agendas and minutes’. It is the latter which will show you decisions taken which affect your life. (And before too long the meetings will be available to view live on YouTube, more information next time). Traffic Signage and Foliage: Always a dilemma for Highways and those local councils which have responsibility for grass cutting – and for owners of hedges – as to when to cut and how much to cut. Spring and summer foliage are lovely to see but please ask the question is visibility adequate for safety and to view warning signs. Also are the ‘gates’ paid for by local councils with NCC support sufficiently visible for the intended job i.e. to show drivers they are approaching homes, children playing, elderly walking. News from The Holt Community Centre

D AY

Huge thanks to those of you who are helping us to redecorate the Centre. I’m pleased to report that 3 areas within the centre have been finished, and we are gradually working our way through, in between bookings and entirely with a volunteer workforce, to give the interior a bright new look. Do pop in and see the difference, which is huge in the areas we have completed. As we work towards a new Arts direction, it’s lovely to see the transformation begin. We are delighted to welcome on board Daniel Josh as our new Centre Manager, who started on 13th May. Daniel will be at the Centre Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm, and brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. A local man born and bred, he has a keen interest and desire to see the Holt Community Centre thrive and flourish, and has already implemented new ideas and brought fresh energy to his role. We have a very busy few weeks ahead of us, kicking off with the latest in our Themed food Nights, Arabian Night on Saturday 25th May, followed by an amazing evening of live music with Wreckless Eric on 26th – an event not to be missed! Our AGM is on Tues 28th, during which we will be sharing our progress so far and our plans for the future of the Centre, and the incomparable Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake on Wednesday 29th May in the evening. On Saturday 8th June we have the next of our Saturday Night Dance Parties which are hugely popular, with 100 people coming to enjoy the last one. We make a concerted effort when planning events to keep them as affordable as possible, to enable all to enjoy them. Please do support these great events, as all of the profits go straight back into keeping the charity going for the benefit of all. An exciting new initiative being run by James Pettit of Curated Escapes is a series of fabulous coach trips, right from the Holt Community Centre. For every person that books, James is making a donation to the Community Centre Charity, which will help us enormously. The trips are many and varied, including local treats to the Broads and the lovely Lavender Centre, as well as further afield to theatre events and even Buckingham Palace, with prices to suit every pocket – see the advert in this edition of the Chronicle for more information. Needless to say we are thrilled and so grateful to James for offering this, I’m sure many people will enjoy the opportunity to go on these wonderful days out. As well as being the home to many great groups, charities and associations, the Centre is a wonderful place to book for private parties and functions, with fully licensed bar, large commercial kitchen and a variety of other facilities, all at very competitive rates. A must-see at the Holt Community Cinema

24 years ago the ballet world was stunned by the now legendary version of Swan Lake created by Mathew Bourne which replaced the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble of swans which shattered convention, turned tradition upside down and took the dance world by storm. The original production gathered over thirty international awards including an Olivier, three Tonys on Broadway and numerous other awards worldwide. The popularity of this unique production has never waned and several generations have been inspired and moved by its universal story of love and acceptance based on Tchaikovsky’s wonderful music. Now 24 years later Mathew Bourne has re-imagined the original choreography for the 21st century with a new production which was filmed live at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in January 2019 and is now available on film for audiences worldwide through More2Screen allowing even more people to see this incomparable, theatrical experience. Election Success

Dear Jo Now the dust has settled over an extraordinary few days, my first priority is to thank so many of you who supported, helped and voted for me in the town and District council elections. When so many of my friends and colleagues lost their seats, for me to hold on in the District elections with a significant personal vote has been truly humbling. I cannot thank those that voted for me enough. Over the last two months I have endeavoured to knock and speak to every household through Holt, High Kelling, Letheringsett and Glandford. For me I thoroughly enjoy the time, meeting, talking and understanding and respecting people’s views. It’s tiring but I’ve always maintained that there’s more to winning elections than leafleting – it’s about being known and trusted in your community. Being fair and honest and having the integrity to represent people well. These are the principles I hope to maintain for the community as I continue to serve and work on your behalf. In the meantime, a little catch up with my family who’ve not seen a lot of me recently and then my aim is to help raise lots of money for the community and charity through this year’s 1940s celebrations. He should be assured that current Brexit impasse shows democracy is alive and well and to quote David Davis, ex Brexit minister, from a speech on 9 November 2012,” If a democracy cannot change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy”

What Next?

Dear Jo, In case a lot of people don’t know, I’m writing to advise that not only is Holt losing from the Community Centre, the long-established Snooker Club, which apparently is going to house an Art Gallery, obviously, we have not got enough of them in the town, but also the Citizen Advice Bureau (CAB), according to the Town Clerk. Another well used service for local people, yes it can be access online but not everyone has a computer or is computer savvy. Allegedly, another Estate Agent is being opened in its place, obviously the town hasn’t enough of them either! So, you see if you need something allegedly, you get yourself onto Holt committees and hey presto it happens, whether it’s to the detriment of the Holt people and services or not! Also, in the one but last Chronicle, we were led to believe that a supermarket discussion is still going on regarding the eyesore of the old Thaxters Site. According to a trusted(!?) council member that’s a load of rubbish, just a smoke screen to cover the locals’ eyes with to keep them quiet a while longer!! So, who can we trust these days, to look after the local people of Holt? Answer? No one!

Dear Jo, May I express my thanks to Liberal Democrat County Councillor Sarah Butikofer for funding from her budget ,the construction of a footpath from Home Farm ,Holt Road , Weybourne, to enable residents and visitors a safer environment to walk ,to and from the village centre. Despite numerous requests from myself to Steve White Norfolk County Council Highways Dept, to improve the surface of the edge of carriage way, forming the pedestrian walkway from Hydrangea Cottage to meet the new walkway /pavement this was not carried out, regrettably this means on a wet day pedestrians will still have to walk out into the road to avoid the puddles. Such a short-sighted attitude from a Senior Officer, when the road was closed for over a week and contractors on site.Finally for those that were inconvenienced by the road closure, I can only apologise.

Co-ordination Needed

We have been campaigning for over two years for improvement in the Train-Bus and Bus-Train connection times at Sheringham, one of two North Norfolk railheads. Sanders Bus Services have introduced a new Service 9 (in April 2019) which runs on Monday to Saturday, six times a day, between Sheringham and Fakenham. This eliminates the need for a change in Holt and to some extent it replaces the previous regular Service 5 through Upper Sheringham. Of particular note there are the beginnings of good connections with Greater Anglia’s trains at Sheringham, both Train-Bus and Bus-Train. In addition the train arrival and departure times are also helpfully listed in the printed timetable, but strangely not in the on-line version. Whilst this is encouraging news for connections at Sheringham to and from Holt and beyond the story is still not good for the Coasthopper Service to Wells, even with the summer timetable. Train-bus connections usually involve a 24 – 29 minute wait in summer and an incredible 56 – 59 in winter. Clearly a bus departing at 40 minutes past the hour when a train arrives at 41 – 44 minutes is ludicrous and, frankly, gives public transport a bad name. Bus to train connections are also bad with buses arriving either one minute after a train has departed; or two minutes before, which is not enough time to make the connection. We recognise there is another factor here and that is the Coasthopper needs to connect with the Lynxbus Coastliner in Wells, which in turn connects with Great Northern trains at Kings Lynn. Changes are afoot in both Greater Anglia and Great Northern train services. There is a new station platform being built at Sheringham (where the annual footfall is estimated at 220,000) and Greater Anglia are about to introduce new trains. At Kings Lynn (where the annual footfall is almost a million) there is an anticipated increase in the train frequency to half-hourly. Surely, the time is now ripe for both train operators with Sanders Bus services and Lynxbus to plan a well-integrated and properly marketed public transport system for North Norfolk. The current need to care for the environment should dictate this discussion urgently as should passenger convenience.

Monday 6th May was a sad day for our parish. The faithful arrived as usual at St Andrew’s to say Morning Prayer to find that the window on the west end of the north aisle had been broken in several places by rocks. Whoever did this - there is no evidence and we apportion no blame - was presumably unaware that this window is one of the most treasured features of our church. Known as ‘The Chaucer Window’ it is a unique piece produced by the great English stained glass artist Francis Howard Spear (1902 - 1979) in 1933, and installed as a memorial to Robert Turner Hales, a local medical doctor and church benefactor, by his loving family. The window depicts scenes from The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer: pilgrims from all walks of life make their way to Canterbury watched over by angels in the city of heaven in the top panels. One section features five guildsmen pilgrims - a haberdasher, a carpenter, a weaver, a dyer and a tapestry weaver. As we picked up the broken pieces of precious glass I reflected upon the contrast between the mindless destruction of vandalism and the painstaking skill celebrated by this window the skill of Spear the artist, Hales the doctor, Chaucer the poet, and the medieval craftsmen - skill glorifying and reflecting the image of a Creator God. In the words of Francis Potts’ hymn, ‘crafstman’s art and music’s measure for thy pleasure all combine.’ Sublime musical skill was very much in evidence in the stunning piano recital given by Veronika Shoot on the evening of Saturday 11th at the first concert of ‘StArt’ - St Andrew’s Arts Project, which seeks to continue our tradition as a patron of the arts by supporting and promoting the arts in the community. It was wonderful that Veronika was able to give a workshop at our community primary school and that funds raised from her concert will help to support the forthcoming international week there. May we as a community continue to celebrate and nurture purposeful skill and art, especially in our young people, and may the holy angels watch over and protect our church as a place of inspirational beauty and pilgrimage.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

Most Camera clubs hold meetings which they call their ‘Annual’ competitions. Once a year, members are invited to submit what they hope are their best photographs of the year in the hope that a judge will agree with them! North Norfolk Photographic Society held their Annual competition for digital (projected) images on May 1st and David Jordan came from just outside Norwich to judge them. He said he would be kind to the Novices, but more strict with the Advanced photographers – and so it was. There were 18 pictures entered by the Novices. Much praise was given – and first was Hanne ‘Nigel’ by Hanne Siebers Siebers picture of ‘Nigel’ – a guy with a luxuriant beard! Second, a bee on a large and ‘The End of a Journey’ colourful flower ‘Collecting Pollen’ from Heather Green. Third, ‘The end of a Journey’ was by Henne Siebers another from Hanne Siebers , a composed still life of a journey diary or journal with various souvenirs – a strand of sheep’s fleece, a pen, a pair of specs, etc. Then – the tussle for a winner from the ‘Advanced’ ‘Lioness photographers. There were more than 50 images and David in a Dust Jordan made fair but critical comments on them all. Diana Storm’ by Knight was the star of the evening, with both first and the Diana second place images. The winner ‘Tough Times’ showed a Knight bedraggled Heron ankle deep in what looked like very cold water – in a rainstorm. And second ‘Lioness in a Dust Storm’ ‘Collecting Pollen’ by an image in gorgeous sandy browns. Third was ‘Mood Indigo’ by Heather Green Malcolm English, a moody picture of a nude, considerably edited to give a surreal image. ‘Tough Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are ‘Mood Times’ by normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at Indigo’ Diana the Holt Community Centre. The Nor’Easter group of the WI was hosted by Holt on 3rd May After the welcome by Holt President Rita Gee, Jerusalem was sung with gusto. This was a jolly evening, with Sheringham, Cromer, Weybourne Roughton, and Holt WIs all reporting interesting events throughout the past year. Nicky Reynolds, suitably dressed, then gave a stimulating talk on the history of the Women’s Land Army, with photographs and a display of intriguing artefacts and original costumes on models. It was fascinating to learn that it actually began in 1917, when WW1 had been raging for 3 years. Shortages of food caused the government to set up the Women’s Land Army, under the direction of Miss Meriel Talbot. Strong and suitable women from all classes were invited to apply. In fact, there were constant appeals throughout 1917 although only 1 in 4 applicants were accepted. This was physically demanding work, and many had no experience so a 4 to 6 week training period was necessary. The work was split into three parts, agricultural, forage and timber and the girls could choose in which part they wanted to work. Disbanded in 1919 it was resurrected in 1939. With the commencement of WW2, the need to provide the nation’s own food became of paramount importance and the WLA was revived, headed by Lady Denman, the National Chairwoman of the WI and a great women’s rights activist. Healthy young girls and women were needed to work on the land and unlikely posters showing pictures of pretty girls driving tractors in the sunshine were put in towns and cities to attract young women into the work. However, this was physically demanding with young women working often in excess of 50 hours per week on the land or operating or maintaining farm machinery, for very little pay, half of which was deducted for their board and lodgings. Some girls stayed in hostels and others had to live with the farmers, which was all right if the farmer’s wife was a good cook! Otherwise, they may have had to tolerate poor food and very small portions, not good for girls with hearty appetites after a day in the fields. Worse, was the fact that some farmers resented them. There were proficiency tests, which if passed could earn the girls extra pay and badges to wear on their uniforms. These were often in short supply, or incomplete, so it was sometimes a case of make do and mend. email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

The girls had no say in where they were sent and were often moved from place to place, but in spite of this, deep friendships were often formed which could last a lifetime. Lady Denman was very hands-on and worked hard to ensure the girls were treated as well as possible although to her chagrin they were not recognised as they should have been and received no gratuities after the war which led to her resignation. At last however, in the year 2000, after much campaigning, the WLA were allowed to march past the cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday. Nicky Reynolds talk, with slides and uniforms was a fascinating insight into a period in which the country was united against a common enemy. While the days were overshadowed by the terrible events of the war, there was a unity within the country which helped to overcome the tragedies and deprivation. Would we ladies be prepared to do the same again? Now there’s a thought! Following the talk, tea and coffee, canapés and homemade cakes were served, thus ending a delightful evening.

BRISTON DAY CENTRE NEWS

We are never bored or fed up here at the Centre where we meet with our lovely friends for lots of laughter and fun. We don’t sit around all day - we are either out in our minibus or being entertained. This is what we have been doing in the past few weeks. We have enjoyed listening to the Fellowship Church Choir, The Marsham Bell Ringers and one of our favourites the delightful Wherry Men. We had a return visit from Mick Leary playing his Yamaha keyboard and telling us lots of jokes, and Heather kept us fit (and laughing!) with her Extend exercises having us jumping up and down in our seats. We have been out for a coffee and a scone at Langham Glass and at Bawdeswell Garden Centre. Some days we just go out for a lovely ride in the countryside and stop at a shop or two for a spot of retail therapy. Events planned for the next week of so include a visit to Bircham Mill, Stody Gardens, and a trip on the North Norfolk Railway. If you are retired or nearly-retired, and you think you could enjoy doing these sorts of things with our lovely band of ‘regulars’ then why not ‘phone Dorothy or Carol on a Monday or Thursday, on 01263 861120, to book a ‘taster’ session or just pop in and say ‘hello’ and find out more about us! Police Appeal

Appeal to trace next of kin, Stalham. Police are appealing for help to trace the family of a man who died in Stalham this month. Robert Smith of High Street died at his home address at the age of 63 on Thursday 9th May 2019. There were no suspicious circumstances and despite carrying out extensive enquiries no next-ofkin have been identified.

Quad bike stolen in Fakenham. Police are investigating the theft of a quad bike during a burglary in Fakenham. • 550g of salmon fillet, skin-on, boneless • 100ml of soy sauce • 1 tbsp of lemon juice, freshly squeezed • 1 tbsp of maple syrup • 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1 dash of tabasco • 2 tsp liquid smoke (I source ours from award winning butcher H.G Graves, also available online or from Tescos) • 100g of coarse sea salt • 4 tbsp mayonnaise • 1 jar of Lilliput capers • 2 tsp chopped dill • 1 banana shallot finely diced

Method

Remove the pin bones and silver flesh from the fillet but leave the skin on. Wash thoroughly then pat dry. Place the fish in the freezer for 30 minutes before you begin, this makes it easier to slice. Once firm, cut into slices approximately 1cm in thickness. Mix the soy sauce, lemon juice, maple syrup, freshly ground pepper, pepper sauce and the liquid smoke and whisk well. Coat the salmon strips in the bowl of marinade, transfer to a sealable bag and allow to marinate for at least 12 hours in the fridge. Pat dry with a clean kitchen towel. Position a clean wire rack over a baking tray, sprinkle the salmon pieces with coarse salt on both sides and let it 'dry' in the fridge for 2 hours. Preheat the oven to 75°C. Brush away all the salt from the salmon pieces. Cover the wire rack with parchment paper or a silicon mat and place over a clean baking sheet. Lay the salmon strips out spaced evenly on top. Cook the salmon until it reaches 75°C. Lower the heat to 60°C, steadily cooking the fish for about 4 and a half hours in total, flipping halfway through. The final jerky should be crispy outside and chewy and sticky inside. For the caper, shallot and dill mayo. Mix all ingredients in a small mixing bowl, folding until it is evenly mixed

BRISTON SHOW AUDIENCE ARE JUST WONDERFUL!

On Friday May 10th, a packed Copeman Centre audience thrilled to the amazing music of star organist Nicholas Martin, who played something for everyone, whatever their musical taste might be - but there was more magic to come from the wonderful audience, who not only contributed £189 to the Centre’s funds from their raffle ticket and refreshment purchases, but also raised £111 for our chosen charity, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital, buying all sorts of goodies from their stall, and then, having listened to Nicholas explaining about his charity ‘Believe In Miracles’ which he and his wife set up many years ago to promote research into autism (both his sones have the condition) as the happy crowd left, they threw a further £161 into a collection bucket in the foyer as they departed - so Nicholas was not the only star of the evening - the audience were too - thank you so much for your generosity! The next show is on Friday June 21st, when a very clever player by the name of Chris Stanbury will be back to entertain us again. Chris plays one of the latest Yamaha organs (which are currently not available in this country) and you will just not believe the amazing range of organ and orchestral sounds this instrument can produce - from the big bands of yesteryear, the symphony orchestra, the trad jazz band, and the modern pop sounds, he will thrill you with it all! At our open meeting on 6th May, Nick Grounds, National Demonstrator from Peterborough entertained us with his title ‘The Materialist’. Nick combined dried and fresh materials to create some very large but beautiful arrangements whilst also entertaining us with his funny stories and quotes. He also gave lots of useful ideas and tips on the use of materials and second hand containers and also the importance of leaving space in an arrangement and advised us to ‘create rather than re-create’! The vote of thanks was given by Glenn Scott. The member’s monthly competition entitled ‘Under the Sea’ was won by Louise Brock, this year the coins to choose the winner are being collected for Cromer Hospital. A Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable

A huge ‘thank you’ to the residents and local businesses of Holt and the surrounding area who donated 1,000 portions of cake (not forgetting Budgens who gave us 36 pints of milk) and the volunteers who worked tirelessly in support of the Holt Youth Project.

This cottage was one of a row of five. They were condemned and knocked down long ago. I had managed to buy a double brass bedstead by then, but it would not go up the tiny twisted staircase. I had to take it to the local blacksmith who cut it in half and then provided some bolts to rebuild it when I had forced it up into the bedroom. Water came from a well again, wound up in a bucket which often came unhooked from its chain and had to be located and retrieved using a long pole. The toilets consisted of a little row of outhouses each of which contained a seat over a bucket. This bucket was emptied each week by a man with a horse and tank. We called him ‘The ice cream man’. He emptied his tank into an old limekiln quarry which was in a field opposite what is now Astley Primary School. The local rubbish cart emptied out there too. There were brick lined tunnels in this quarry where wrens used to nest. The rubbish attracted hordes of rats and a local chap called Platten used to stand there shooting them. The quarry eventually filled and the farmer covered it with soil and made it part of his field, but if you look closely you can still see a dip where the quarry was situated. Elsie hated this cottage, because it stood a little lower than the road. This meant that every time it rained, water flooded under the door of the cottage and ruined all the downstairs floors. She got so upset about it that it made her ill and our local doctor recommended that we be allowed to rent one of the new post war council houses that were being built at Woodfields. The rent on this house was higher than we had been used to, but it had a bathroom and water from a tap! I was always on at my boss at the farm to increase my pay but he was allergic to pay increases! I complained bitterly to him that I could not afford the rent on my council house in another attempt to get more cash. At the time, the railway was selling lots of the houses in Melton Constable. He suggested that he would buy one of these at auction and I would live in it and pay him the cost back from my wages. He sent his son to the auction with me and a house on Burgh Beck Road was bought for £400 plus £40 stamp duty. He took so much each week from my wages and in time, the house was mine.

The aim was to increase the waist size of all those visiting Stody Garden on Sunday 5th May by plying them with tea and cake, as over £1500 was raised the aim was very much achieved!

We are delighted to welcome Michelle Arthur from All Nations Church, Leicester as our guest speaker on Monday 27th of May Michelle grew up in a dysfunctional family who did not know Jesus, but she has been transformed by the love and grace of God over the last 20 years. She has worked for many years with those who are on the margins of society and has a heart and a passion to see the overlooked, the downtrodden and the isolated step into the awareness that they are children of God, loved and cherished and with an amazing destiny ahead of them. After losing her husband suddenly in 2013 she went to Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry in Redding, California. She completed the first 2 years there and then came home to intern at her home church, All Nations, in Leicester. This experience radically changed how she saw God, herself and the Kingdom and she is passionate about releasing what she now carries to anyone who is willing to receive it. She is now working back in the marketplace where she loves to bring kingdom thinking and see people step fully into who they are meant to be by calling out the gold in them. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with those in her community who don’t know Jesus yet and also working as a chaplain into local massage parlours.

It all started when...

Hosting a dinner party for friends and family, the conversation steered towards the food. After many kind words and compliments, they said, “We could eat your food every day!!” With our busy lifestyles and the frustration of ‘We never have time to cook each evening after a busy day with work’, the conversation continued. We want a meal that’s quick and convenient but doesn’t compromise on nutrition or taste? Light bulb moment!! We did our research and the results were that (however much of a foodie you are) sometimes you just don’t feel like cooking from scratch

What we do…..

After further research and product development the business began - Norfolk Gourmet Kitchen. The company goal - create nutritious and tasty food! We set about creating and tweaking recipes to create wholesome, all-natural dishes that tasted just as delicious when cooked from frozen. Why did we choose to fill people’s freezers, not their fridges? Dementia Action Week 2019

RAF LANGHAM REUNION AND DOME HERITAGE DAY

The week commencing the 20th May is Dementia Action Week and provides us all with an opportunity to think about how we can make a contribution to improving the lives of those living with dementia. Some of you may have watched the moving programme on TV about the Dementia Choir with Vicky McClure and seen what a difference music and social contact made to those that took part. Dementia is a socially isolating disease which affects not only the person living with dementia but also the person caring for them. It is predicted that there will be a million people living with dementia in the UK by 2025 so most of us will know someone living with the disease. Holt & District Dementia Support aims to break down that social isolation by providing a weekly Poppy café in the Meeting room at St. Andrew’s Church every Tuesday from 10.30 – 12.30 and a Home Visiting service that enables carers to have a break and enjoy time away from their caring duties. Amongst the many activities at the Poppy café there is a regular singing session, which is enjoyed by all present, plus occasional visits from a local school choir. We would like to extend an invitation to you all to come and visit us at the café one Tuesday, have a cup of coffee and find out about what we do. We cannot guarantee singing every week but we can assure you of a warm welcome and an enjoyable time. Come and see for yourself and you might find that being a volunteer at the café could be your way to support those living with dementia. Last year the RAF Radar Museum had its most successful year ever. We are open 4 days a week and we need volunteers to join our happy band of over 80 women and men who help keep us going. We are looking for people to initially help in our lovely cafe. We seek volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life. Our current team has women and men ranging from 18 to 80 and we are especially keen to find people who can help prepare and serve our delicious home baked cakes, scones, sausage rolls, pasties and light lunches as well as teas, coffees and other treats in the cafe. We can guarantee that you will have an enjoyable time and make new friends and you will be helping a charity to keep going and help us continue to provide an award-winning experience to our visitors. We offer our volunteers a friendly place to come to and we organise an annual trip and a Christmas lunch, plus there are free teas and coffees always available in the crew room. RURAL LIFE: PAST PROBLEMS AND FUTURE CHALLENGES”

The 2019 Sir George Edwards Memorial Event Recent public concerns about high suicide and divorce rates amongst farmers and farm workers have provided a sharp reminder that rural life has never been the bucolic idyll envisaged by many townsfolk. The former workhouses (now generally refurbished and used for other purposes) that we see around our area bear witness to the poverty in which many of our forebears ended their days – and prompt us thoughtfully to consider what demographic and social challenges an uncertain future may hold for the countryside. Every year the East Anglia District of the Methodist Church joins with the Norfolk Branch of the Rural Section of UNITE to commemorate the life and work of Sir George Edwards O.B.E., the Methodist lay preacher, who in 1906 founded the union which was to become the National Union of Agricultural Workers. Born in 1850, Sir George was the youngest child of a Norfolk farm worker. As a child of four he with his mother and siblings had to spend winter in a workhouse when his father was imprisoned for stealing turnips from his employer’s field (later in life he was to become a Workhouse Governor). Obliged by his family’s poverty to start work (scaring crows ) at six years old George was deprived of any formal education and, when he was first accepted as a chapel preacher he could neither read nor write and his young wife had to teach him the hymns and scripture lessons by rote. He nevertheless went on to achieve national acclaim as a union leader and he was twice elected to Parliament as Labour MP. for South Norfolk. The annual Memorial Meetings in his honour normally feature an historical exploration of an issue affecting rural workers in Sir George’s time and a talk on the relevance of similar issues in the rapidly changing agricultural industry of the 21st century. Agricultural employment is changing very quickly. Few family farms can afford to employ full time workers. For any work they can’t do “in house” they turn to specialist contractors, cooperative groups or larger neighbours. The traditional role of “general farm worker “, characterised by regular hours, regular (if moderate) income, and relatively secure housing was a way of life is rapidly disappearing. Today’s workers (be they male or female) are likely to be highly skilled and qualified, and to keep abreast of modern technology. Employment is, however, no longer as secure or as regular as once it was, seldom includes a house and frequently requires working ridiculously long hours to maximise the productivity of complex and extremely expensive machinery use only for brief periods during the year (100 hour weeks are not uncommon at peak seasons such as the cereal harvest). Although their incomes have improved in recent years, farm workers are still at a disadvantage compared to those in most other industries. Moreover, the stresses and risks and and long hours, which often lead to mental stress and marital breakdown, continue to make agriculture one of the most physically and mentally hazardous of occupations. Though long hours of overtime help to boost their incomes, for farm workers even greater problems and challenges still remain. Since the Sir George Edwards Memorial Event was started in 2002 many of these issues have been explored in them. This year the speakers will be. Stephen Pope, head of the museum’s Volunteer Research Team who will take as his title George Edwards; workhouse inmate to Workhouse Guardian, and Peter Medhurst; a former UNITE Agricultural Regional Officer 1978-2004 will ask Is there a role for Farm Workers and Small Farmers in the countryside? The meeting will be held on Saturday 29th June (2.00 – 4.00 p.m.) in the old Workhouse Chapel at the Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse museum of Norfolk Life at Gressenhall near Dereham the Workhouse. They will be performing Henry Purcell’s ‘Dido & Aeneas’ (1689), one of the first English operas, and is now one the most frequently performed. The story, from the fourth book of Virgil’s ‘Aeneid’, depicts the Trojan prince Aeneas’s dalliance with Dido, queen of Carthage, interrupting his quest to establish the city of Rome. Dido’s lament, at the end of the opera, has become a common part of Remembrance Day services across the UK, and has been recorded many times, including by rock and soul singers. The principal roles are taken by Julia Smith (Dido), Christopher Barnes (Aeneas) and Jodie Wiggins (Belinda, Dido’s sister). Instrumental support is given by strings and harpsichord led by Eddie Jones. Cantamus choir would welcome new members of all ages and abilities. In chapter fifty-four of his work Wild Wales (1862) the Norfolk born author George Borrow (1803 --1881) is advised by his Welsh guide John Jones, during a walking tour, that they are in the vicinity of a great statue. It transpires that it is of Hercules but Borrow says: "I told him that in my country, the eastern part of Lloegr (England) I had seen a man quite as tall as the statue." Pressed by his guide, Borrow says: "Hales the Norfolk giant who has a sister seven inches shorter than himself, who is yet seven inches taller than any man in the county when her brother is out of it?" Although there are very minor variations given in the sizes of the Hales brother and sister, the sizes of Robert 7 ft 8 ins, and Mary 7 ft 2 ins are generally accepted as the standard. The rest of their siblings averaged 6 ft 5 ins for males and 6 ft 3 ins for females. Robert Hales (1820--1863) was a native of West Somerton in east Norfolk and sometimes it is suggested that his family was descended from a gaoler at the Tower of London in the reign of King Henry the VIII who was 8 ft tall. If that Tudor giant was from Norfolk, it occurs to me that the Hales family could have been descended from him on both sides of their ancestry given the three intervening centuries. Coupled with this is the high density of Danish settlements in east Norfolk and its association with men of great stature from the Viking era. Be that as it may, Hales was a fine man in other senses. His great size was surmounted by a head which Borrow describes as "...nigh on as noble as Shakespeare's" and the only drawing of him which I have seen supports this. He was presented to Queen Victoria after saving a drowning boy, which nicely endorsed his renown, but there was in his personality something which gives a hint at his character. Walking through Cambridge he was accosted by a student who said: "Hey, big belly, what's the time?" Hales paused, then said: "If you look down the street you'll see a church tower, and on that a clock" then, after another pregnant pause, he added: "But, sorry, I forgot, puppies don't open up their eyes until they are nine days old!" www.holtchronicle.co.uk

‘Wally the Elephant’ celebrated St. George’s Day with Scouts at Beeston Hall School

the Scouts ‘sailing’ by in a crabber (mounted on a trailer)! They then gave a very animated potted history of the palaeontology behind, and discovery of, the fossilized skeleton of a steppe mammoth, found on the beach after a heavy storm in 1990 ... the Scouts named him ‘Wally’! The audience sang and cheered as the performance unfolded. Scouts, Cubs and Beavers together with their Leaders all renewed their Scout Promises. Following the National Anthem and the presentation by District Commissioner Paul Henriksen of the St George Flag to 1st Hoveton & Wroxham Group as the exemplary Group of the year, the young people and their Leaders paraded back to their starting point. A very good turnout of guests including the High Sheriff, Lady Agnew, Royal British Legion - Norfolk County Vice Chairman, PE 'Smudge' Smith MBE MCGI, North Norfolk District Council - Leader, Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, Councillor Richard Shepherd; NEN District Scout President, Richard Butler, MBE, DL, NEN District Scout Vice President, Mrs Betty Jackson, founding member of West Runton Group, John Creasey and other scouting representatives, supporters and friends enjoyed tea and refreshments in Beeston Hall’s dining room. West Runton Scout Group decided to support Beeston Hall School’s nominated Charity for 2019 and therefore the collection was this year in aid of East Anglian Children’s Hospices (EACH) for their NOOK Appeal. The Headmaster, Fred de Falbe, said afterwards “It was lovely to be able to welcome so many to our school to share in what is an important community event. My thanks go to District Commissioner, Paul Henriksen and West Runton Group Scout Leader, Helen Cardani for organising this so brilliantly, and also two long-serving members of the Beeston Hall staff, Mike and Angie Cole – Mike has been at Beeston for over 40 years and has served the Scout Group throughout that time. It is a source of particular satisfaction that the bonds between Scouting and Beeston Hall have been so strengthened Blakeney Scouts of late.”

West Runton Scout Group played host to this year’s St George’s Day Celebration on behalf of North East Norfolk District Scouts, and by kind permission of the School Headmaster, Fred de Falbe the Celebration was held on the Beeston Hall School Sports Field and in a blaze of sunshine proved to be a memorable and enjoyable event for all. Civic Dignitaries, parents, friends and supporters saw 500 Scout members aged from 6 years onwards - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Adult Leaders and Supporters all assembled at Beeston Regis Holiday Park clifftop field. West Runton Group formed the District Colour Party this year and led the procession along the cliffs, through Laburnham Caravan Park to the Cromer Road and into the school, their flags displayed by a good breeze which gave maximum colour. Twelve Scout Groups provided standards for each of their Sections, together with the District’s Explorer Scouts and the parade was admirably supported by Gt Yarmouth Sea Cadets, our guest Marching Band, led by S/Lt (SCC) Lydia Chilvers RNR OiC . The Celebration Service was opened by the new High Sheriff of Norfolk, Clare, the Lady Agnew of Oulton - born in the windmill at Cley and brought up on the coast in east Norfolk, Lady Agnew said she was delighted to be able to return to the area and in particular to Beeston Hall School where her two children, Madeleine, 23, and Edwin, 19, had been pupils. Lady Agnew sees her role for the year as supporting charities and their volunteers, and she will be particularly trying to shine good light on smaller charities that need more publicity. The Celebration Service on the chosen theme of ‘Bones’ was led by District Scout Chaplain, The Rev’d Canon Paul Cubitt - Vicar of North Walsham, Edingthorpe, Worstead and Westwick (Benefice) and Priest-in-Residence at the Parish of Our Lady and St Joseph, Sheringham and Cromer, The Rev. Tim Bugby (Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham). The gathering was then treated to a very original presentation by West Runton Scout Group members about their village history which began with

Yet another amazing concert in Holt Church

I have just come home from St Andrew’s having spent a thrilling evening listening to a concert given by a young Pianist called Veronika Shoot. (Six months ago this would have been known as a Falcon Concert but is now under the new ‘StART umbrella.) She played a delightful programme which she titled ‘Journey through Childhood’. She started by playing a suite of short pieces by Debussy called ‘Children’s corner’ the last movement of which was the well-known ‘Gollywog’s Cakewalk’. Then after two pieces by a Japanese composer she played a selection of works from a Children’s Album written by her Father, Vladislav Shoot. (Veronika was born in Moscow and came to England at the age of five when her father became the composer- in- residence at Dartington Hall.) They had picturesque titles such as ‘The Trained Bear on the Ball’ and ‘Rain During Sunshine’. After the interval there were more albums of children’s music ending with Schumann’s ‘Scenes from Childhood’. Throughout the concert we were held spellbound playing that was so sensitive and vital. It could have listened to twice as much. One suite I particularly enjoyed was by someone called Korngold which was made up of four short pieces which were caricatures of Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Bartok and Hindemith! The applause at the end of the concert was unanimous and Veronika received a standing ovation. One would have to go a very long way to hear such piano playing, and from one so young. Theo Crowder

A long summer weekend of wildlife and creativity inspired by the unique North Norfolk landscape is coming to Cley, Thursday 18 July – Sunday 21 July with many household names involved. With Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Aspinall Centre as its hub, Cley Calling Changing Tides is a festival of writing, art, photography, music and performance all inspired by the natural world. Each event in the festival reflects nature in a different way, through the eyes, the voice, the fingertips or the mind of a different artist. Natural History journalists and authors, Patrick Barkham and Simon Barnes will each lead a guided walk around NWT Cley and Salthouse Marshes and give a talk on their bestselling books. Patrick recalls the pleasure – and pain – of trying to find all 59 species of British butterfly in one summer; Simon wrote a book about a year in the life of the marsh: which is really about the privilege of living with vulnerability. He said: “I lost nature – and then I got it back. As a result I have written millions of words trying to help everyone else get it back. Which is why I wrote Rewild Yourself. We’re losing the wild world, sure, but we’re also losing our ability to notice it: to see it, hear it, smell it. So join NWT Wildlife Evangelist, Nick Acheson and me on a walk and for an evening talk to rewild yourself just a little.” Families can meet NWT Children’s Ambassador, Jess French – vet, zoologist, minibeast expert and presenter of ‘Minibeast Adventure with Jess’ on CBeebies – on Saturday to learn all about the fascinating world of butterflies (free event). We’ll be all aflutter with a day of activities for families led by the Norfolk Butterfly Conservation Trust, including crafts and free guided walks. On the Sunday we are celebrating marine wildlife, with a free full day of ‘Ocean Commotion’ on the beach with UEA’s Professor Ben Garrod and organisations including RSPB, RNLI, Friends of Horsey Seals, Temples Seal Trips, The Coastal Exploration Company, Cley Harbour, Holkham Hall, The Wash and North Norfolk Marine Partnership, Norfolk Trails and many more. There will be performances from guitarist Kitty Macfarlane; and poetry readings from Kevin Crossley Holland, Jade Cuttle, Jonathan Ward, Jos Smith and Elizabeth Cook over pizza and Pimms. For some lovers of the wild, engaging with nature involves detailed study, description and naming. With its mix of grazing marsh, saltmarsh and reedbed, Cley is not only a celebrated site for birds. Its varied habitats are also home to 27 species of butterflies. County recorder, Andy Brazil, leads a Butterflies for Beginners workshop combining classroom tuition and an afternoon of practical fieldwork. Paul Richards will lead a workshop covering the essentials of good nature photography; Martin Gibbons teaches how to capture fleeting moments of birds in a drawing workshop. Flying the (Blue) Flags for North Norfolk’s fabulous beaches

All six beaches have retained their prestigious gongs for another year It’s official: North Norfolk continues to have some of the best beaches in the country. The beaches in Cromer, East Runton, Mundesley, Sea Palling, Sheringham and West Runton have all been awarded prestigious Blue Flags for another year – and that means the 45-mile North Norfolk coastline is home to half of all the Blue Flag beaches in the east of England. The awards are given out only to those beaches that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety. It means the hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors who visit North Norfolk’s beaches each year can be sure they are enjoying top-notch destinations. North Norfolk is the only district in the county that has been awarded any Blue Flags this year. As well as the Blue Flags, the beach at Wells, which is owned by the Holkham Estate but jointly managed by NNDC and the RNLI, has won a Seaside Award, which guarantees visitors a clean, safe, attractive and well-managed coastal stretch. Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “This is fantastic news and highlights once again what fantastic beaches we have in North Norfolk. “It is testament to all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes all year round to keep our beaches in tip-top condition and guarantee their safety and cleanliness.” Allison Ogden-Newton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, which runs the Blue Flags scheme, said: “The success of the beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers and volunteers to local people and businesses. “When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.” There is evidence that the awards attract more visitors, with the number of people visiting the district’s beaches rising from 100,000 a year to 400,000 since they started being awarded Blue Flags.

Bowls Club needs its Porridge

As I write this, edition 425 of the Chronicle pops through the door. I see that I wrote then that “all we need now is a warm dry summer”. Well I was still hoping – the sun was shining but that chilly wind was still apparent - as I headed off to Caister to see Holt’s first match this season in one of several Knock Out Cup competitions. This was the “County Cup”, run under the auspices of Norfolk Federation Bowls, involving 4 teams of 3 players, each player bowling 2 woods, up and down 21 times. In fact this wasn’t actually “up and down”, but in the less common form, called “roving jack”, where the jack could be sent in any direction across the Green as long as it didn’t interfere with the other 3 teams. Collision between rolling bowls is not unknown! Anyhow, Holt got off to a good start and were leading quite comfortably after 10 of the 21 “ends” – 33 to Caister’s 21. But then the rot started to creep in and, while, by end 15 they were still ahead 53 to 42 they then lost the match by a full 10 shots after the last 21st end. Clearly more stamina was needed – perhaps a double helping of oatmeal for breakfast? The following day, and a quite different type of match; this time at Acle, with two pairs of ladies battling it out with 4 woods each over 21 ends straight up and down the Green - just one of the very many County Knock Out competitions for individuals (or pairs) in the County. This one was for bowlers who have yet to achieve “badge” status in County bowling – the “unbadged pairs” competition. The match was fought tightly and valiantly. Joy Seago and Gillian Pilgrim from Holt eventually beat Brenda Cole and Eileen Airey from Acle with what appeared an easy victory by 23 shots to 12. However, this comfortable margin was mainly due to a rare 6 shots on end 9 and a last wood delivery by Gillian in end 13 which moved the jack, converting 2 shots “down” to 2 shots “up”, a swing of 4 in the score. Blakeney Rowing Club Wins Trophies at King’s Lynn Regatta

Blakeney rowing outings continue to be frequent and hugely enjoyable with several new rowers coming along to try their hands at skiff rowing. It’s a great time of year to row to the Point or to Cley. Saturday 11th May saw Crabbers gathering on the South Quay, King’s Lynn, to participate in the Hanse Festival races on the Ouse. The opposition was provided by a range of skiffs and Harker’s Yard Gigs from King’s Lynn and Burnham-on-Crouch. The fun began early with all hands available to negotiate the deep, slippery mud to launch Bluejacket. This was a tricky exercise, calling for teamwork and good balance. No shoes or boots were lost this year. The ladies’ crew got off to a flying start, surging into an early lead. There were clashes of oars underneath the half-way bridge before the return leg was negotiated against a strong tide. The crew kept immaculate timing throughout a tough race and finished in third position. A close-run result! The men’s crew also started well, moving swiftly into second position. The bridge turn was negotiated with aplomb before the hard-fought home run saw another third-place trophy! The race of the day came in the mixed crew event. After a fifteen second time penalty, the Blakeney crew was at the back of the field. Incredibly, they worked their way past their rivals to achieve second place. This was a monumental piece of coxing and rowing which drew cheers and gasps from the spectators. It was the best trophy of the whole event! The overall prize for most second and third places was retained and awarded in the clubhouse afterwards. Many thanks to King’s Lynn Coastal Rowing Club for organising such an enjoyable and competitive day. It was great to mingle with other rowers in their clubhouse afterwards and at the hog roast which was provided later in the afternoon. You are very welcome to come along and try your hand at skiff
