RNLI Wells Lifeboat Station celebrates 150th anniversary
Wells Lifeboat Station is celebrating its 150th anniversary as an RNLI Lifeboat Station this year and is hosting a week of activities as well as an exhibition reflecting the community’s commitment to saving lives at sea for more than one-and-ahalf centuries. Wells first had a lifeboat in 1830, manned and run by local volunteers until 1869. The first RNLI lifeboat was the Elisa Adams. The exhibition, celebrating the anniversary, opens at the Maltings, Staithe Street on Wednesday 10th July and runs until Tuesday 16th. It will show a collection of paintings and photographs together with memorabilia portraying the 150 years of the station. It will also include a section on volunteering for the RNLI today. A number of other events have been organised for the week as well as a raffle with prizes reflecting our nautical heritage – more details on our website, in the Quay magazine and on posters in the town. Dates for your Diary: On Saturday 13th July, our big day, the outer Harbour pontoons will be open to the public from 11am offering access to view historic lifeboats; at 12 noon the Chief Executive of the RNLI, Mark Dowie, will present the Station with a commemorative vellum at a private ceremony at the boathouse. At 2.00pm the boathouse will be open to the public and light refreshments will be served by the Wells Lifeboat Guild; at 5.00pm the Wells all-weather lifeboat, Doris Mann of Ampthill, and the inshore lifeboat, Peter Wilcox, will lead a flotilla of lifeboats, past and present, past the main quay. Visitors are welcome to watch the procession from the Quay. The boats will return to the boathouse for recovery and members of the public will be able to watch this from the Beach Bank at the beach end. We hope to see you there! Holt Medical Practice Happy Retirement, Dr Franklin
After nearly 39 years in the NHS, Dr Peter Franklin is hanging up his stethoscope. Colleagues from across health care and many patients have passed on their thanks and best wishes for his retirement. Dr Franklin joined Holt Medical Practice in 1989 when the GP Partners were Dr Latten, Dr Chapman, Dr Crawley and Dr Brooks but is about to say farewell to his colleagues and patients after nearly 30 years at the Practice. Born to a naval family, Dr Franklin travelled much as a child, later attending Wolverstone School for Boys in Suffolk from the age of 11 through to A-Levels. He went on to study medicine at Nottingham University. After qualifying in 1980 he did house jobs at Ipswich Road Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital in London, where he met his wife Barbara. After a short time working as a GP in Saudi Arabia he settled in Norfolk, first at the Pottergate Practice, and then in North Norfolk when he joined the Holt Partnership where he has been ever since. As well as being a GP partner at Holt Surgery he has been involved in teaching trainee doctors from the UEA and appraising other GPs across Norfolk and Suffolk. As well as a dedicated member of the Surgery Team, Dr Franklin is an active member of the local community. He is the Chairman of the Blakeney Players and been involved in over 60 home-grown shows such as Blakeney Dun Roman, Spar Trek and We Love You Kevin Prentice (to mention a few). He is also a member of the charity “The Blakeney Twelve” which raise funds for those in need in the local community. Dr Brooks, the senior partner at Holt Medical Practice (who joined the partnership the year before Dr Franklin) said “I have been very fortunate professional print solutions in having Peter as a partner. He is a compassionate and thoughtful doctor, bringing wisdom and a great sense of humour to the practice”. Dr Franklin is now looking forward to spending more time with his family, his boats, his bicycle and his shed and is looking forward to the next chapter. He says “I have had a brilliant time at Holt. It has been a pleasure working at the Surgery with many many great colleagues. And despite what many might read in the National Press, there are some GPs who have enjoyed the challenges and opportunities that the NHS has thrown e: reephamprinting@btconnect.com our way……and I am one of them.”

potential, securing a strong legacy for the future. Upcoming events include another fabulous Saturday Night Dance Party on 8th June, and the first of our fundraising BINGO Nights starting on 12th June at 7pm. It’s also a packed programme for the Community Cinema, starting on 16th June with a tribute to Doris Day, Move Over Darling, closely followed on 21st by a digitally remastered version of Casablanca which I am told is amazing quality, and finishing off with the new award-winning Mary Queen of Scots on 26th June. All these showings are only £5.00 a ticket, and as ever, the bar will be open for evening performances. We look forward to seeing you!
What an exciting time we’ve had at the Centre over the last 2 weeks! Our latest themed food night, Arabian Night, was a feast of delicious Middle Eastern dishes, followed as ever by a mixture of fun and tricky questions for the quiz. We had some amazing feedback on the night from 80 strong attendees, and of course all of the profits of these fundraising evenings go directly into the ongoing work of the Charity.
We also had such a lovely array of fabulous raffle prizes, mostly donated by the supportive and generous businesses of Holt – particular thanks to Byfords, Folly Tea Rooms, Wells Deli and Tilly and Grace for their generosity, it made the night go with a real swing! The following night we were treated to a live gig by music legend Wreckless Eric, who did not disappoint, and we had around 100 people here rocking the night away to the thrum of guitar and keyboard. It was so exciting to have a live music act, particularly one of Eric’s calibre, in the Centre, and we plan to have a more dedicated programme of live music events throughout the year. We also had our AGM on Tuesday 28th May, at which we had a record turnout, all keen to hear about the changes in the Centre, and to be fair, with some concerns too. I’m pleased to say that throughout the course of the evening, we were able to have full discussions with the attendees, resolving some of the issues, and being sure to diligently record those on the night that need further attention.
For more information or to book, please call the Office on 01263 713427, check out the website at www.holtcommunitycentre.org.uk or email us on holtcc@btconnect.com or find us on our new Facebook page. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson, Holt Community Centre
The Lottery
I always play the Lottery, each and every week, Hoping that one Saturday, I’ll hit a winning streak. Maybe my luck will change, my numbers will come up, Those little balls will do their job and call forth Lady Luck! I’ve often wondered, which is best, to dream or really win? For when you’re rich, you’re hounded by new-found kith and kin! Once you’ve bought up everything, it must begin to pall, Unless you hope to get another Lottery windfall! I’ve heard of people winning twice, which I think’s really mean, What about the rest of us who’ve yet to win a bean? Mind you, I do wonder, if I’d won it once before, Wouldn’t I be tempted to go back and try for more? Greed is such a powerful force, its seeds are quick to grow; Perhaps it’s better just to dream, than sell your Soul for dough! Or perhaps not! Frances Wraight
An AGM of a registered charity is absolutely the right place to voice concerns and discuss the operational running of the charity, and we were pleased to have so much engagement with the towns people. We take the responsibility of answering concerns from our User groups and the public very seriously, and work hard to diligently support and answer them at the Centre. As we move forward with development plans for the Centre, I hope that the people of Holt continue to participate with us in steering the ship and supporting what we do; our purpose is to represent those people who wish to come into the Centre and enjoy it, be they regular User groups or one off bookings. I hope, after our presentation, most people are convinced of our sincerity and passion to see the Community Centre flourish and reach its full
New Group Leader of the Conservative Party
At the first meeting of the new Council at North Norfolk District Council, Duncan Baker was appointed Group Leader of the Conservative Party. The Conservatives are the second largest group and are the official opposition party. Mr Baker who lives in Aylmerton with his family has been a town or District Councillor for Holt since 2009. In that time, he has been a former Mayor and spends much of his non-working time involved with voluntary or community projects around Holt. This year he will chair the Holt 1940s weekend, which he hopes will raise thousands of pounds for local good causes. Mr Baker is also the Conservative.

Commenting on his appointment he said, ‘I am proud to lead the Conservative Group and am looking forward to the challenges ahead. We have much to be proud of in North Norfolk and through the previous administration, which the Conservatives predominantly led, we have a magnificent record of achievement. In opposition we aim to work constructively with all parties, whilst providing challenge and scrutiny to decisions in the best interests of North Norfolk’s residents. Duncan Baker. Thank you for Voting
Dear Jo
May I please express my sincere gratitude to all those individual residents who came out to vote on 2nd May and pledged their trust in me. I am obviously very disappointed not to have retained my seat at District Council as I am exceedingly worried about the many very important local issues which need to be continued and addressed in order to bring about the vital developments and improvements necessary for Holt families and residents. I chose to canvass on wholly local issues and have to say I would not change that choice if it were to happen again. Therefore, I can now only state unequivocally and truly that my hope for Holt is that we receive a fair and just proportion of funding and assistance to enable the delivery of everything we need and deserve in our Home Town. With many thanks again to each and every single person who gave me their votes, for Town Council or District Council. Each one is very highly valued by me. Maggie Prior (Holt resident)
In Reply to Letter ‘What Next’ Issue 426
Dear Jo
I would like to set the record straight regarding the letter by Mrs S Hibbert in the last issue of the Chronicle. Sadly, the Snooker Club is not going to be resident at the Holt Community Centre as of the end of June. This was a very difficult decision that unfortunately the Executive Committee had to make, as custodians of the Charity. With a membership of under 10 people, and occupying exclusively a huge space within the centre at an extremely low rent of only £1,100 per year, we were obliged to consider, given the financial hardship that the Charity has been under for at least the last 3 years, whether it was a responsible decision to continue to support the club by extending their tenure. The sad fact is that we would not be stewarding our finances correctly
had we not addressed this issue. As we shared with the public during our Public Consultation Day on 30th March, and again on 28th May at our AGM, we will be converting the former Snooker room into affordable rentable art studios, to enable local artists who are unable to find anywhere to make their art to have somewhere to practice, and also to be able to sell their work. There are very few places in the area in which to do this, so we will be providing an important much needed facility for these people, and there will be room for 10 artists to be resident, earning the Charity in excess of £12,000 per year. In addition, the artists will be participating in the daily life at the Centre, and helping us with many projects, not least of which is to provide affordable art workshops for all, starting with one for Dementia sufferers, of whom sadly, we have many in our town and the surrounding district. Regarding the Citizens Advice, your facts are completely erroneous, and we completely support the hugely important facility and service that this vital organisation provides for our town; there is no way that we would consider terminating their lease. I understand that the Town Clerk, again a lady who has served this town faithfully for many years, is extremely upset to be misquoted in this public manner, and I had to reassure the CAB because of the publication of these damaging rumours. May I gently suggest, that should you feel the need to address issues within Charitable organisations in this town, that exist to serve and bless the Community and do so as Volunteers, that you ensure absolutely that your facts are truthful before you publish them, as the results can be detrimental and far reaching if they are not. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson, Holt Community Centre.
Two Party Farce
Dear Jo If it sufficiently exposes the farce of two party politics to the degree that we finally turn to Proportional Representation then, in the long term, Brexit (in or out of the European Union) could well turn out to have been the best thing that could have happened to Britain.
Mike Waters
Democracy
Dear Jo, Chris March and Maurice Land (Readers Write, Issue 426) are both right of course, as far as that goes. The real point is that true democracy is rule by the people, and that is the principle being flouted by the powers that be. What is implicit in a democracy, but should really be explicitly written down, is that manifesto promises made by the party winning an election should become law and must by law be implemented forthwith. Unfortunately, these days (maybe ‘twas ever thus) a political party can please itself what it promises the electorate, but whether it actually implements those promises is another matter. (Can any legal expert say whether Breach of Promise can be sued as it can for marriages?) The pipe-dream is to find and elect 326 good men and true who can then pass the appropriate Act; right now, human nature being what it is, no current Parliament would ever do so, there being too many varied vested interested at stake. Cedric Lytton
A woman called our airline customerservice desk asking if she could take her dog on board. “Sure,” I said, “as long as you provide your own kennel.” I further explained that the kennel needed to be large enough for the dog to stand up, sit down, turn around, and roll over. The customer was flummoxed: “I’ll never be able to teach him all of that by tomorrow!”

A Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable
Sugar Beet Wars! Part 1 by Leslie Kinsley
I have told you how hard we worked to grow sugar beet, but the harvest was even worse when it came to the work involved. We started lifting just as the corn harvest was finishing in early September, but ‘the campaign’ as they called it, went on until February when the factory would finally close to deliveries. We took freshly dug beet at the start even in the frost, but as the frost got deeper the beet would all be lifted and stored in ‘clamps’ which were protected under straw. There was a beet plough pulled by a tractor which lifted it, but it then had to be ‘topped’, ‘knocked’ to remove frost and mould and then put into heaps for loading. Sometimes the plough missed some beet, and these had to be pulled up by hand which was very difficult. Back then, we had Italian prisoners of war who had to do this. When one of our tractor drivers missed several beets, they shouted at him ‘You’re no good!’ He got angry and shouted back, ‘You should have told that Mussolini he was no good’ At this they were very angry and went after him. He drove his tractor back to the farm and refused to go back until the Boss went with him to calm things down. My job was to load onto a horse drawn cart and take it up to Melton Station where I put it into a railway truck to go off to the factory at Kings Lynn. Later I was allowed to use a tractor and trailer for this, which I much preferred. At this stage instead of shifting the load by hand, you could tip it in. The man in charge of the goods yard encouraged all us drivers to tip in as much as we could to each truck. He then shunted them across to make up a large goods train. As they were overloaded, some beet would fall off. He then gathered this up and filled a spare truck. He arranged with a local small farmer to put a permit on this and they shared the money for it.

Emergency Call for First Response Volunteers
a successful defibrillation reduces rapidly, therefore, rapid response and treatment is essential.
After 15 years Holt and Community First Response volunteer group needs help from volunteers to come and take over the group, otherwise it is facing being disbanded post AGM which is to be held on 22nd July 2019.
A responder, who may have been on duty for several hours without a call to respond to, could suddenly receive a request to assist the ambulance service. Should that call be a cardiac arrest emergency and you contribute to the revival of the casualty then this is the greatest reward of them all. We strongly believe that the communities we cover value the Responder Unit and the work it has been able to do over the past 15 years. We are sincerely hoping some new volunteers will come forward and take over the Responder Unit to carry on the vital work it does for the community. We will be available to assist any new volunteers in any way that we can, so interested parties should not hesitate to contact either the East of England Ambulance Service via their website or Chris Manders retiring coordinator on 01263 712992.
Approximately half of the group are either retiring or resigning being a responder. However, there are still some members who will, it is envisaged, continue Responding, but as individuals they will be setting up in their respective areas with other responder groups.
The decline in membership, is partially as a result of the inability to recruit new members which can be partly attributed to changes from the restructured Ambulance Service which introduced an increase in the initial training, taking longer and being held out of the County. There was also the changing of our parameters which resulted in what appears a lack of requirement for our services compared to previous experiences, which has a disheartening effect.
Finally, our Group wishes to thank all those who have supported us in so many different ways over the years, especially with the placement of public access defibrillators throughout the locality. There are people with us both in the community and elsewhere in the country who would not have survived if it had not been for your support of our group. We thank you for enabling us to play a part in ensuring that they are alive today. Our thanks for your bequests, your donations, cooperation and goodwill.
However, our most important task, that of rapid response to breathing difficulties, coronary problems and other potentially life threatening conditions still remains our core priority. From the time a cardiac arrest commences there is a period of approximately eight minutes during which the opportunity for a successful resuscitation is at its highest. The chance of
A continuation of the Responder Unit, albeit with new and committed personnel would be our legacy to this community for years to come. I would now like to add my personal thankyou to all of Holt and Community First Responders both past and present for the effort and time you have given to help make your community a safer place, and also to the tremendous support we have received from the community. So it is with a very heavy heart that Holt and Community First Response, which I was privileged to help set up all those many years ago and have been its chairman and coordinator since the beginning may now become no more, unless we get some new younger volunteers to take over which I sincerely hope will happen.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY THE VIRGIN, KELLING
Ev ery one welc ome to join us
The Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month. St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. The Church contains many interesting features, including a 14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi. The Church draws a congregation partly from outside the Village from those who value traditional services using the words of the Book of Common Prayer.

I’m not sure how you spent your May Bank Holiday, but I happen to spend mine with the Archbishop of Canterbury, along with several thousand other people! Archbishop Justin Welby was this year’s guest preacher at the National Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady Of Walsingham. It is his third visit, two of which have been in the past six months. The village of Walsingham, the ruined Abbey, the Shrine Church and the Holy House all seem to have had a profound impact on him. He commented in his sermon that there was a renewed interest in pilgrimage with more people than in the middle ages now making a pilgrimage to holy places, with the Camino, the route to Santiago Compestella in Spain being crowded with people. The recent fly on the wall television documentaries following celebrities on pilgrimage and Simon Reeves’ excellent series on pilgrimage bear out the Archbishop’s statement. Even in our own county there are moves to open up ancient pilgrimage routes to Walsingham from Norwich and Kings Lynn in order that people may safely make the journey on foot. Today, people embark on a pilgrimage to a holy place for a number of reasons. They may simply desire to get away from the busyness of daily life and want a walking holiday or else they are on some sort of quest to find themselves, to reflect on the direction of their lives. Some are seeking answers to prayers or a desire to deepen their faith and are on a spiritual journey. Whatever reason people set out, pilgrimages can be a transforming journey. The Archbishop spoke off the man who had set out from Canterbury Cathedral as an atheist. The Dean had prayed for the man who had not objected to the prayer as he didn’t believe but by the time he had reached Rome he had become a Christian. A pilgrimage, rather like life, is a journey we make in the company of others on which our experiences, our encounters along the way shape and mold us. Yet it is also a journey we make with God in Christ Jesus whom we can meet along the way. Holy places like Walsingham which honour the Saints, the Archbishop said, are places where the veil between heaven and earth is thin. Places where prayer is answered and we can encounter the divine transforming love of God. It is greatly encouraging that pilgrimage is more popular than ever and we are very blessed to have a place of pilgrimage only a few miles away. Of course, you may well have your own place of pilgrimage known only to you where you go to encounter the divine. The important thing is that from time to time we set out on the journey to visit these places and allow our hearts to be touched by the people we meet along the way and be open to encounter the God who is always with us.

North Norfolk Photographic Society
Jim Hartje came from Peterborough to talk to North Norfolk Photographic Society on May 15th. Originally from Surrey Jim Hartje moved to Peterborough in 1974 with a young family and got really interested in photography as they grew up. He has been a member of Peterborough Photographic Society since 1981 and he is now their Web Master. He is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society, a North & East Midlands Photographic Federation Lecturer and a Photographic Alliance of Great Britain Judge. He is also the holder of the Excellence FIAP, and British Photographic Exhibition 5 Crown distinctions – through successful participation in both national & international exhibitions. Jim Hartje Jim on this occasion spoke about Audio Visual techniques – the combining of photographs with sound (usually music) to make one polished presentation. In the first part of the evening Jim showed how the software works. Using a combination of applications such as Photoshop to tailor the photographs to a suitable size, it was also necessary to tailor the sound to fit – Jim said he uses audacity now. Then specialist audiovisual software is used to create the show. Jim uses ProShow Gold. And members were shown how images can be made to dissolve one into another, to spin around on the screen among many other techniques. After a break, Jim Hartje showed half a dozen of his audio-visual shows. There was one on fungi, another on motor racing and several using landscapes – Jim after all is a prize-winning photographer! Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org/

Kelling Probus Club May Meeting
Kelling Probus Club met at the Dales Hotel on the 16th May. Members enjoyed a fine lunch and were then entertained by Chrissie Wiltshire who spoke about the life and career of her late husband Johnny Wiltshire. Johnny had started out as guitarist in the golden age of the late fifties and early sixties when, as a member of the Trebletones he toured with and appeared on the same bills as the Beatles, the Hollies, Cliff Richard and Helen Shapiro. Later on he became a successful bandleader and a musical director for tours featuring many great stars, such as Vera Lynn, Englebert Humperdinck and Des O’Connor, the Four Tops and Roy Orbison. He provided the bands for television series most especially, for eight years, Morecombe and Wise. Chrissie had many fascinating reminiscences and anecdotes to share. Johnny died in 2006. Kelling Probus Club meets on the third Thursday of each month and welcomes interest from retired professional and businessmen. Details about the club and forthcoming speakers may be found on the website www.kellingprobusclubdocs.club and the secretary, Ken Murray, will be pleased to hear from any prospective member on 01263 821060.

May Holt WI Meeting
In spite of glorious weather, the meeting on 15th May was well attended and our President Rita Gee welcomed us all. After the reading of the minutes, Coral Batchelor, county organiser of the Norfolk WI, discussed the Resolutions for the National Annual Meeting in Bournemouth. The first resolution was a call against the Decline in Local Bus Services. She talked about the massive decline in the number of bus services and the repercussions, especially on rural and semi-rural communities, where both elderly people and the young are affected. Lack of transport makes it difficult for young people living in villages to attend college or jobs, and for the elderly it can add to their loneliness and make routine visits to hospital or doctors nearly impossible The NFWI is calling on government and local authorities to improve these services to ensure adequate provision. There was a vote on this resolution which was passed. The next resolution was Don’t Fear the Smear. The number of women who attend their routine cervical smears has diminished and is currently at its lowest level for 10 years, which is so sad as it saves thousands of lives. Perhaps this is because they feel it might be painful or embarrassing. It is neither and over in minutes. There was a lively discussion on this, although most members, being over the age limit, were not directly affected! However, the need to encourage younger friends and daughters and granddaughters to attend was passed in a vote by 100%. After tea and biscuits, which always gives time for a chat, Gillian Pilgrim talked about her annual visit to New Zealand where she attended WI in Temuka, twinned with Holt. There are only 8 members in Temuka but it is a lively group. Photos were handed round which also showed her visit to Staveley where a picnic was held in a neighbouring garden;
and her visit to a museum where interesting artefacts were on display dating from 1850, the time of the first settlers. Finally, Glen Scott spoke of her rescue of the Holt WI tapestry, a beautiful piece, worked on by WI members. It is to be hung in the Heritage room at Nelson House. Plans are going ahead for a midsummer coffee morning at the President’s home (not The White House!) a garden party in August and a day trip to Sandringham in September, not to mention the WI input at the Forties Weekend and other nice events on offer. The next meeting is on June 19th when the speaker will be Mrs Maria Pennington on ‘Pearls my Passion’.

Police warning after mobile phone thefts
Police are warning members of the public to be vigilant after four incidents of mobile phone theft by men using distraction techniques. In Wymondham on 29th May at about 12.25pm suspect(s) targeted an estate agents in the Market Place, placing newspapers on a desk to cover the victim’s phone. They started a conversation to distract the victim before removing the papers and taking the mobile phone as well. Similar incidents include a theft in Ingham Suffolk on Friday 17 May and another at McDonalds, Thetford on Monday 20 May in which a mobile phone was stolen. Two men asked members of the public for Euros whilst hiding the mobile phone under papers. A third incident was also reported to police on Tuesday 28 May when a mobile phone was stolen from a hairdressers in Thetford, again involving two men distracting the victim by asking about hair products. In all incidents the men suspected of being involved were seen leaving the area in a dark coloured vehicle, possibly a BMW or a Mercedes. Members of the public are reminded of the below advice in order to prevent becoming a victim of distraction theft: •Busy, public areas such as shopping centers and public transport are popular places for distraction or pickpocket offences where we may be distracted or close contact with others is normal. Be alert to your surroundings. • Keep your mobile phone hidden from view such as in an inside pocket (not hanging out of a back pocket) or inside a closed bag. • Think about when you use your phone and who is around you. • Don’t leave your phone unattended in public places. Anyone with any information should contact the Breckland Engagement Officer, PC Paula Gilluley on 101 or by email at Paula.Gilluley@norfolk.pnn.police.uk.
At our last meeting of the season on 13th May, our guest speaker Rosemary Ward led us on a pictorial tour around the ruins of southern France and showed us some of the plants associated with each. We started at the Popes’ Palace in Avignon, which became the centre for western Christianity in the fourteenth century after unrest in Rome. The ancient fortified town was established by the Celts but influenced by the invading Greeks then the Romans, like many of the ruins we saw. When Rosemary visited the town the Judas trees and several Cistus sun roses were in full bloom. Around the Roman theatre of Orange and the aqueduct of Pont du Gard, wild rosemary and lavenders and dwarf Iris lutescens clothed the hillsides. South of Perpignan, bougainvilleas and oleanders became more common and perennial Morning Glory, similar to our annual purple variety, adorned the ancient walls. Rosemary also visited the famous Bambouseraie in Languedoc, which showcases many varieties of bamboo and its use around the world. Bamboo looks at its best if you remove old canes to be able to see through the individual newer stems coloured black, green or gold. Throughout the talk, Rosemary indicated which of the plants she showed might be tolerant of our Norfolk climate. Our autumn season begins with a talk by Charlotte Philcox entitled, "Florists, Fairies and Flowerpots" on Monday 9th September.

Flaming June
It is the month of June, The month of leaves and roses, When pleasant sights salute the eyes and pleasant scents the noses. Nathaniel Parker Willis
June has to be my favourite month, with the wonderful hedgerows bursting forth in blossom and colour, and butterflies and nesting birds flitting through the sky. I also love the fact that the wonderfully aromatic elderflowers appear, just begging to be made into delicious elderflower cordial. I have published this recipe in here before, but it’s so scrumptious, and the flowers are just starting to come out now, so if you’re quick, and the weather is kind, you may be able to knock up a few batches of this most fragrant and heady cordial, just in time for Wimbledon. The cordial goes beautifully with lemonade, water, soda water, gin or sparkling wine, and you can also use it in cooking, for icing or even in jellies and pannacotta. There’s really no comparison between this and the bought variety, it’s quick and cheap to make, and frankly, once tasted, you’ll never go back!
Elderflower Cordial
30 heads of elderflower, roughly stripped off the stalks Approx. 2 litres water 1.4kg sugar Grated zest of 2 lemons Grated zest of 2 oranges Juice of 6 lemons
Try to collect your flowers on a hot sunny day – it is meant to increase the flavour. Give your flower heads a good shake to get rid of any bugs, and place them in a large pan with the zests and cover them with the water. (If they are not covered, add some more; exact quantities are not essential). Leave overnight. Next day give a good stir, and pour the liquid out through a jelly bag or muslin, squeezing the flowers. Clean pan, and return the liquid to it, adding the sugar and lemon juice. Heat gently to allow sugar to dissolve, then turn up heat and simmer for approx 15 mins, skimming off any scum and stirring occasionally. Leave to cool, and strain through jelly bag again. Sterilise some glass bottles and decant cordial into them using a funnel. Top and place in the fridge, and use within about 6 weeks, or place into plastic bottles (leaving a good space at the top for expansion) and freeze. Frozen should keep for a good few months.

Ride into Paston History: A Cycle route rich in both drama and beauty
Last month saw the launch of a new cycle trail through some of the most picturesque parts of Norfolk's countryside. The 'Paston Pathways' circular trail begins and ends at historic Mannington Hall, near Holt, and is as much a journey through the county's past, as it is the countryside. The cycle route was opened on Sunday the 26th of May by Lord Walpole, the current owner of Mannington Hall.
The cycle route has been developed by the Paston Footprints Project; a collaboration between the Paston Heritage Society and the University of East Anglia, that is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The Pastons were one of Norfolk’s most prominent families from about 1380 to 1750, rising from medieval peasants to becoming nationally important members of the aristocracy. They were, in many ways, the first modern family. What makes the Paston family truly unique is that they left a vast collection of letters and accounts of their lives in late medieval Norfolk - the now famous 'Paston Letters'. The three year Paston Footprints Project will highlight the remarkable story of the Paston family, the times they lived through, and make original resources available to the public for the very first time. 'Paston Pathways' is a unique series of walks and cycle routes being developed by the project, with the aim of getting people to take an interest in, and visit, many of the sites in Norfolk once associated with this remarkable family. "The Pastons had their roots deep in the Norfolk countryside", states Dr Rob Knee of the Paston Heritage Society, "and took a keen interest in many parishes and places. They spend vast sums on building great houses, erecting monuments in our churches, and acquiring vast areas of land. Many of these sites can still be visited today, and each one brings us a little closer to these intriguing individuals."
The new cycle route includes places such as Gresham Castle, where Margaret Paston was besieged in 1448, and from where she wrote the most extraordinary letter to her husband - asking that he supply armour and crossbows to defend herself. The cycle route also includes sites such as Barningham Winter church, where John Paston lies buried, and Itteringham church, where there is a fine memorial to a later Margaret Paston. "The Paston Pathways walks and cycle routes", continues Dr Knee, "hopes to create links between all these individual places of interest, and place them within the wider context of Norfolk history. They are also a really good excuse to get out and enjoy some of our fabulous countryside." The connection between the Paston family and Mannington Hall stretches back many centuries. William Lumnor of Mannington Hall was a very good friend and supporter of John and Margaret Paston. In return, John Paston supplied timbers from his Saxthorpe estate for the building of the hall in the 1460s. The Paston Letters contain many warm references to William Lumnor, who often provided the family with advice and helpful lobbying on their behalf. In the eighteenth century Mannington was also later the home of Horatio Walpole, whose nephew, Horace Walpole, was instrumental in arranging the first publication of the now famous Paston Letters in 1787. Whilst others of the time had voiced scepticism about people wanting to read the personal letters of a medieval family from Norfolk, Horace Walpole declared that the Paston Letters 'makes all other letters not worth reading". A Better Life for Ben
Just4Children are fundraising for a life changing operation called SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy), which will give Ben, aged 9 from Sheringham, the chance of a better life. Ben and his identical twin Alex were born prematurely at 29 weeks. Both boys were seriously ill and Alex passed away after 4 days. Ben remained in Neonatal care for 10 weeks. He was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy at 2 years old. As he grows the muscles in his legs become tighter, causing discomfort & muscle spasms, hindering his mobility and independence. Ben is now a full-time wheelchair user. Ben has been accepted for an operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital called SDR. This will significantly improve his quality of life by removing the spasticity and helping to manage the discomfort he lives with on a daily basis. It will increase his mobility and allow him the opportunity to perform the daily activities most of us take for granted. We have exhausted all non-surgical options and now need to have SDR which will provide a long term solution to manage his spasticity. Whilst Ben is eligible for the operation it will not be funded by the NHS. A condition of this offer is that we will also need to self-fund a minimum of 2 years intensive physiotherapy, and any equipment required for his rehabilitation.
Please help us to raise ÂŁ60,000 to allow Ben to live a more comfortable, dignified and independent life.
Thank you. https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/abetterlifeforben

What about the children? Shared parenting after divorce
having both parents fully involved in their lives. If you’re interested in a shared parenting arrangement, it’s worth exploring further with your solicitor or putting forward for consideration if you’re attending mediation. Maria Endall, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr Coping with your own emotions during a break up is hard enough, let alone the opinions, and sometimes interference of those around you. The bigger and likely more troubling question is: how do you make the separation easier on your children? So often separating parents begin to think of the children as ‘theirs’ – belonging to them and denying the important relationship between the child(ren) and the other parent. Clearly children do not have the same insight or understanding into the reasons for the break-up, but if they are regularly surrounded by conflict, it is not uncommon for them to feel they are in some way implicated or responsible for it. Seeing the two people they love and need most, separate, can have a life-long effect on a child’s mental wellbeing, depending on how it is handled by their parents. Children can’t be expected to ‘choose’ which parent to live with and, assuming that both the mother and father are fit to parent, what happens next? Although it may seem inconceivable at the time, shared parenting arrangements where children spend equal amounts of time with both parents is an option worth considering. For shared parenting to work, you and your ex-partner will need to live within a reasonable distance of one another so that your children can attend the same school, continue friendships and maintain contact with other family members, causing the least amount of disruption to their lives as possible. Each parent then shares responsibilities which may include school runs, attending after-school activities, appointments or helping with homework and so on. Often, after a break-up, children remain living with one parent and have limited contact with the other. This level of contact can feel transient and insufficient. With a shared parenting arrangement, both parents retain equal status and the children benefit from the routine and stability of

WEYBOURNE GOOD COMPANIONS ENTERTAINED BY CLIFF…..AS IF!
On Wednesday, 22nd May, Weybourne Good Companions Group spent a very lively afternoon being entertained by Will Chandler, who is also known as, Cliff….. As If! Will looks and sounds very much like Cliff Richard and has even mastered his dance moves. He had us all singing and clapping along to a selection of Cliff’s popular hits, dating back to the 1950s. In between the songs Will told us how he has travelled the world with his act. He has performed at private functions, corporate events, music festivals and on cruise ships. He has his own Shadows backing group who accompany him to some events. Will surprised us by announcing that he is also an ordained Baptist Minister and he takes his Cliff Richard Gospel Show along to many church organisations and events. He also supports many local charities. In addition, Will is a trained fitness instructor and holds a Flexercise class in Cromer Community Hall each Monday morning. Several of the audience expressed an interest in going along!

Women’s Pension Campaign Gains NCC Support
Norfolk campaigners adversely affected by pension reforms have gained the support of Norfolk County Council to help them keep their plight on the agenda. Members of the Norfolk Broads – PAIN (Pension Action in Norfolk) Group met the Leader of the Council Andrew Proctor at County Hall to hear that the Council had almost unanimously passed a motion to back more than 45,000 women in the county who were born in the 1950s and 1960s and have had their state pension age increased twice, from 60 to 66 by 2020. Mr Proctor will now write to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to call on the Government to reconsider transitional arrangements for affected women. The Norfolk Broads do not expect the state pension age to go back to 60 but they do claim women were given insufficient personal notice by the Government about the changes. Many have been left in financial hardship as they were unable to make alternative pension plans in time. The Group’s leaders, Lynn Nicholls, Lorraine White and Annette James, thanked Judy Oliver, County Councillor for Sheringham and Chairperson of the NCC Pensions Committee, for her help and for putting the motion forward to the full Council. They said, “We are delighted to gain this support which helps keep the pressure on the Government to right a wrong affecting not only us but our children and grandchildren in the future”. The group, which has over 200 members, campaigns against the increase in state pension age for women born in the 1950s and 1960s. A judicial review into state pension changes is due to be heard in London on 5 and 6 June. To find out more search norfolkbroadsPAIN on Facebook or emailnorfolkbroadspensions@gmail.com

Sara offers an integrated form of treatment, focusing on extremely light but effective techniques including the whole body Mctimoney Method approach and CranioSacral therapy. The skeletal system of the body is assessed as a whole on each treatment and adjusted as required. Due to the nature of the adjustments (speed combined with very little force) no adjustment is forced but encouraging the body to repair itself and return to optimum health. At a first consultation, a full case history is taken regarding symptoms, present and previous, as well as details of your lifestyle, occupation, sports, hobbies, etc. The number of follow-up treatments, will vary considerably depending on your age, lifestyle, general health and the length of time you have been suffering - the acute problem is generally more quickly resolved than the chronic. Usually an initial treatment plan of six sessions is recommended, though more or fewer sessions may be needed. Treatments are given weekly at first then gradually spaced out allowing longer periods between treatments. Once a problem has been resolved, a maintenance programme of check-ups and treatment at three to six months is always recommended. What problems can be helped? • Pain, discomfort and stiffness relating to the joints and bones, including the back neck and shoulders. • Muscular aches and pains • Most sports injuries including tennis/golfers elbow • Headaches and migraine • Whiplash injury • Sciatica and trapped nerves The gentle nature of this treatment makes it especially suitable for pregnant women, young babies, children and the elderly. Of course it doesn’t matter your age or condition if you think this treatment may help, you can ring me at Holt Holistic Centre 01263 711898 for a free confidential chat. or see our website: www.holtholisticcentre.co.uk Sara Thornley MAMP
Blunt by name and blunt by nature. by Richard Shepheard.
When Cordelia Brooke-Wynne arrived for luncheon with Lady Hermione Domme-Tee at Breck Fen Hall she seemed slightly put out. Hermione pressed her about this and Cordelia replied: "When we arrived at the park gates your gardener opened them, we stopped just inside so that I could give him a tip, but all we could see was the backside of his breeches in the rose-beds." "Oh," sighed Hermeione,"That's Bertie Blunt, his daughter Gertie's just the same. I interviewed her for a job as a domestic and she seemed something of a prospect, but when I said 'Gertie I think we may be suited but you must understand that I am a woman of few words and when I do this (gesturing ominous beckoning motion of the forefinger) it means come here.'" "And do you know what the hussy said? She said 'And when I goo like that there' (furiously shaking her head from side to side) that mean I aren't a'cummen!' I was furious and said: Gertie you've enough brass in your neck to make a five gallon drum." Then she said: 'Yis, missus, and you're got enough water in yar skull to fill it!'" After a tour of the stables and tiffin, Cordelia departed restored by Hermione's hospitality. However, Hermione decided that she must give her gardener a little reproach about his perceived rudeness. Arriving at his cottage she said to Bertie Blunt: "You must understand that people in our station of life place a great emphasis on breeding!" The old gardener replied: "And you wotta understand that people in our station o' life are too tired at the end o' the day to worry about anything like that!"

Solution to No. 261: 1. Rg1+ Kxg1 2. a8R (not 2.a8Q? stalemate) 2… Kh1 3. Ra1. One-liner in which White sacrifices one R to replace it with another! As the black K has to make all the moves for Black anyway, maybe the checking key-move (giving an essential flight-square) is not too bad; certainly amusing. No. 262, the second of 3 varied problems for solving here, also featured in the British Chess Problem Society’s weekend competition in which your correspondent took part. The selfmate is a very old type; White plays first and forces Black to give mate himself – here on Black’s second move. Obviously the black QR will be the one forced to do the dirty work, by appropriate checks by the white Q, so the key is marked and 3 nice variations follow. Difficulty 2.
Birthday Treat
For her 40th birthday, my wife said, "I’d love to be ten again." So that Saturday, we had a heaping stack of chocolate-chip pancakes, her favorite childhood breakfast. Then we hit the playground and a merrygo-round. We finished the day with a banana split. "So how did you enjoy being a kid for a day?" I asked. "Great," she said. "But when I said I wanted to be ten again, I meant my dress size."

Junior Team Successes The Junior members of BCC continue to perform extremely well both in club tournaments, as part of our league teams or in county tournaments. They are currently outshining their senior colleagues in obtaining results. The Norfolk Junior Team tournament was played on Saturday. There were two sections: Open and under grade 75. In the Open, Broadland Leverets finished first. Our gold medal winning team was Ieysaa bin-Suhayl, Benedict Ward (captain), Benjie Perry and Jacob Davison. In the u-75 section, Broadland Cygnets finished first and Broadland Elvers finished fourth. Our gold medal winning team was Darcy Pashley (captain), Joshua Dawson, Justin Singh and Django Stephanides-Price. The photograph above shows the team proudly showing off their well-deserved medals. Django has only recently started playing chess having started showing an interest at home, his parents started taking him to the free chess club at Sprowston Library where the children are taught by Roy Hughes, one of our senior team, himself an ex Norfolk Champion. This is part of the Chess in Schools and Community project which aims to bring the game of chess into schools where it can aid concentration as well as improve mathematical skills. Since then Django has entered several chess events and is doing well. Our second photo shows Benedict Ward holding the trophy as winner of Broadland qualifying tournament for the UK Chess Challenge. The third photo shows Benedict Ward, Jacob Davison and Robert Smith with the Stichbury Shield, which is awarded to the team that wins The Friendly League. There were still three possible winners at the start of April and the title was only decided by the final match. This year’s winning team was Broadland Grebes. (The other two members of the squad, Sue Eyre and Benjie Perry, were not present at the time of the photograph). Our senior team however did manage to reach the final of the Norfolk and Suffolk Cup playing against Ipswich. This is scheduled to be played on June 30th. BCC also reached the final of the Williamson Cup but lost against DONS Cavaliers, many congratulations to them. The headline news from the Great Yarmouth congress was Stephen Pullinger finishing as the outright winner of the u-170 section. Also, Heather Wells had an exciting king hunt in her final round game and Heather + Benedict Ward both had grading performances significantly above their current grades. ‘MY NORFOLK, MY HOLT' with Ray Moore
The next interview in the ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ series at Holt Library, is on Thursday the 20th of June, with Ray Moore (who started the Holt Chronicle (with Caroline Carter) and is a member of the Holt and Neighbourhood Housing Association; a member of Holt Sports and Social Club management committee; Vice-Chairman of Holt Playing Fields Association; and a member of Holt Town Council.) Sessions run from 11.00am till 12.00 noon. Ray was born in Sharrington in 1948. His father was a farm worker, specifically a cowman and his mother a housewife. He attended Brinton County Primary School where his Grandmother was the caretaker, a job later to be taken on by his mother. He passed the 11 plus and went to Fakenham Grammar School. After leaving school his first job was at Fisher & Son in Fakenham in the builder’s office. Ray left Fishers after six months to join the Post Office, and worked for the Post Office for 28 years, in various capacities, across East Anglia, taking redundancy in 1994, to work in various self-employed roles before starting the Holt Chronicle with Caroline Carter some sixteen years ago. After a conversation with Dick Gray, a postman in Holt who was involved with the Youth Club, Ray visited the club one evening to help out. He then spent the next 18 years heavily involved. He once estimated that during those 18 years he spent between nine and nine-and-a-half thousand hours. All of this voluntary. The Youth Club being on the Playing Field, Ray also joined Holt Playing Fields Association at the invitation of Wing Commander BRW Hallows who was Youth Club Chairman. He is presently in his 50th year with Holt PFA where he is vice-Chairman having been Chairman. During this period he also helped briefly with the Scouts. Ray has always been a keen sportsman and played both football and cricket for Holt. He started a Holt Youth Club football team, an under 14 team as part of Holt United Football Club, and in the end finished up managing an Under 12 team, Under 14 team, Under 16 team and an Under 18 team as well as managing Holt United A team, Reserve team and First team (temporarily). He stepped down from Holt United F C about three years ago having been a player, manager, committee member, vice-Chairman, Treasurer and Chairman. Ray also revived, with others, Holt Cricket Club, and was proud to captain the team for a couple of seasons. He was also heavily involved with the sale of the Playing Field on Jubilee Road and setting-up the new complex which has a Bowls Green, three adult football pitches, four youth football pitches and a cricket square (redundant now as the team recently folded). Ray is also a past member of Holt Community Centre management committee. These sessions are about valuing the contributions of individuals to the life of the community, past and present; about exploring Holt from different perspectives. Participants talk about the Holt and Norfolk they know and love, past and present; how it was when they first knew it, and how it is now, both from a personal and a professional point of view. Recordings of past sessions of “My Norfolk, My Holt’; are available as part of the Norfolk Heritage Centre Podcast webpage, which can be found here: www.thenorfolkheritagecentrepodcast.wordpress.com/my-norfolk-my-holt Booking for these sessions is advisable. (Telephone Holt Library on 01263 712202.) The event is free but donations to the library are welcome. Tea and coffee are available. ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ – is a way of bringing together different members and sections of the community, as well as valuing the place of the library. The next ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’, on Thursday the 25th of July, is with Delaval Astley (owner of ‘Back-to-the-Garden’ and a former artistic director of the Holt Festival).
