Full STEAM ahead for £19 million Dyson building at Gresham’s School

Sir James Dyson, Founder of Dyson and Gresham’s alumnus, has donated £18.75 million to Gresham’s School in Holt, Norfolk to enable a new centre for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education. The Dyson Building will be designed by Dyson’s architects Wilkinson Eyre, Sir James Dyson with Logie Bruce-Lockhart the first practice to achieve two consecutive wins of both the Lubetkin Prize and the Stirling Prize. It will be located at the heart of Gresham’s Senior School, and will be completed by September 2021. Douglas Robb, Gresham’s Headmaster, said: “This is by far the largest donation the school has ever received and the new spaces will have an immense impact on the quality of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics education that our students receive, now and for decades to come. We are hugely grateful to Sir James and are excited that our partnership will be a long lasting one. We look forward to working with the James Dyson Foundation to develop new and inventive approaches to teaching and with The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology to explore exciting long-term opportunities for our students to pursue careers in engineering.” The building will enable new approaches to teaching, encouraging project work and collaboration. Spaces will be equipped with the latest technology to ensure the highest levels of teaching; from robotics and programming, to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning. The building will also provide greatly improved opportunities for the outreach programme which Gresham’s runs with local schools. Sir James Dyson said, “Engineering and science are the most fulfilling of careers, they are also vitally important to our society and economy. To prime a pipeline of young people who want to study engineering, we must inspire them at the earliest possible stage – I hope this building will do just that. For 20 years, my Foundation has supported science and engineering education. I’ve observed that from the age of around six, children are very engaged; they are inventive, dreaming up ideas, and curious, wanting to know how they can be made. But these traits get stamped out of them, partly by the system and partly because the teaching of these subjects in schools has not kept up with the pace of technological change. By creating state of the art spaces I hope that we can foster, inspire and educate more brilliant young minds. Wells County Division: I now know that Wells Division is shared between the following district wards: Wells and Holkham; Coastal; Priory; Stody; Holt; Walsingham. What has not changed are the nice people and hard working councilors. And I await with interest when next year the county decides what changes it will make to the county’s divisions. Wells-next-the-Sea Recycling Centre Re-use Shop: It was a delight to open the re-use shop at Wells recycling centre – not only being able to present a cheque for £9,470 to the East Anglian Air Ambulance from income generated by existing re-use shops but also to see the enthusiasm of the staff at the centre who are rightly proud of their efforts to bring the shop into operation and ensure more items are re-used than thrown. The County Council’s re-use shops welcome donations of good quality second hand pieces and sell these on at bargain car boot prices. Helping to give useful items a new home reduces the amount of unwanted items going to waste and the income from sales in the shops helps to offset the cost of providing the recycling centre service. Dry Road to Wells: For anyone as curious as I was the red and white poles are marker posts for a gas main. (For visitors and newcomers, the Dry Road is the B1105 Wells to Fakenham, historically known as the Dry Road because it was one of the few roads around these parts without a pub.) Bank Scams: Norfolk County Council Trading Standards has received reports from residents that bank accounts are being opened in their names. Victims received a letter from a bank with information of a new account opened in their name followed by a further letter with a bank card for the account. The victims were not customers of the bank nor had any dealings with the bank. Advice: If you receive such letters contact the bank straight away; keep a record of all conversations you have with the bank and copies of letters referencing the fraud. For further advice and to report any scams contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06. Council leader to hold monthly surgeries Views sought from members of the public

News from The Holt Community Centre

I’m so thrilled to report to you all that after 5 months of intense grafting, incredible support from both volunteers at the Centre and the Business Community of Holt, and a lot of creative thinking we are now in a much better place financially, and able to say that we have stabilised the ship! There is still a lot of work to do to ensure the future in the way that we have envisaged, but it is really astonishing that we have achieved a turnaround of this magnitude in under 6 months, and all credit to the amazing people who have shown such dedication, vision and support; we are both humbled and thankful. It’s Vivre La France this month, with 2 great events in our calendar to kick start summer with a bang; French Night on 29th June, during which we will be tucking in to great gastronomic delights from across the Channel, a fun quiz and our usual blend of light-hearted laughter and camaraderie, and our new DJ French Kriss will be musically weaving his special blend of magic to get us all up and dancing on Friday 5th July. We are so thrilled to be hosting one of Norwich’s top DJ’s in Holt; at only £5.00 for a whole night’s epic dancing, that’s a great night out! We are currently refurbishing our bar area and Lounge, which not only will look beautiful, but will have exciting new drinks too – something to look forward to when you attend our events. Another amazing piece of news is that we now have our sponsorship to replace the flooring throughout the Centre (other than the sprung dancefloor in the Hall, which is still going strong!) Massive thanks to Bespoke Flooring of Holt, who have given us an exceptionally generous deal on the most beautiful, hardwearing and stylish flooring, enabling us to further enhance our facility for all to enjoy – we are so thankful. Our first BINGO Night was a great success, with over 40 people attending, and helping us to raise a really good amount for the Charity. We will be carrying on with monthly BINGO Nights, with the next one being on Wed 17th July, so please do come and enjoy a great night out and help us to keep the momentum of fundraising going. There are some great events coming up during Holt Festival Week at the Centre, including an Irish Ceilidh, a showing of John Hurt’s last film ‘That Good Night’, the first ever LOVE HOLT Children’s Art Exhibition and Prizegiving followed by a showing of ‘Mary Poppins Returns’, Poets Luke Wright and Molly Naylor and musicians The Lewis Sisters. What a great line up! It’s going to be an exciting Summer!

Members of the public are being encouraged to share their views and raise questions about the service provided by North Norfolk District Council with its Leader, Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer. Cllr. Bütikofer will continue to host monthly surgeries at the Council’s Cromer offices; half-hour appointments can be arranged by contacting lynda.mcelligott@north-norfolk.gov.uk or by calling Lynda McElligott on 01263 516242. Surgery dates are as follows: 25 June, 30 July, 27 August, 24 September, 29 October, 26 November and 17 December. Appointments will be available between 12.30pm – 5pm. Leader of the Council, Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer, said: “The surgeries that I have held so far have given me a great opportunity to listen to the views and concerns of local residents and to understand what matters to them and the communities they live in. “It’s important that the Council understands what’s important to local people so that we can put them at the heart of everything we do, so I would encourage people to come along to one of the forthcoming surgeries to meet with me.”

HCC Evening Event

Dear Jo On Saturday the 25th of May, a group of us went along to support the Holt Community Centre’s latest food themed event, an ‘Arabian Night’. The word was that they were worried that ticket sales were low, it being a Bank Holiday weekend – they needn’t have worried, the place was packed. And what another great evening it was. The food was excellent, and an inspired way of breaking down inhibitions, with sharing dishes of chicken Schwarma, Morrocan Tagine, and Arabian Tabbouleh, with lots of salad, herbs and dips as extras for the schwarmas, followed by sticky date and cinnamon cake, lime, coconut and cardamom cake, served with yoghurt and honey, and mint tea. What’s not to like. The quiz was the usual frustrating mix of challenging questions and faces you can’t quite put a name to, answer or remember, but a good laugh as ever – and I don’t even particularly like quiz nights. So why not think about supporting such an event at the centre – (a group of us even met up, with our own take-aways, prior to enjoying ‘A Star is Born, the previous week). If you’re on your own, it’s a great way of not being on your own, of meeting people and perhaps making new friends. Or why not get together with a group of friends and make it a night out. You too might be surprised by what you find you actually enjoy. Here's to the huge enthusiasm and energy of the team leading the Community Centre (which you might be surprised to know is a charity, not something funded and run by the Town Council). There’s nothing in it for them, but hard work and trying to keep the centre financially afloat, there’s everything in it for you and I. Phil Barrett.

A Garden at the Library?

Dear Jo, One of the most dismal sights in Holt must be the empty gravel-covered space outside our public library in Church Street. The friends of the library would like to transform that wasted space into a useful and attractive place for everyone in the

community. Some funds may be available, but first we need help and ideas for what to do and how to do it - suggestions made so far include putting in plants in containers, installing a picnic table, laying down grass, or making a children's play area ... Dementia Action Week

Dear Jo Recently, during Dementia Action Week, Holt & District Dementia Support, had a stand at Budgens Supermarket in Holt. We were there to give out information, talk to people and explain how our organisation helps the community, supporting those who are living with dementia, along with their families and carers. Through your magazine I would like, on behalf of all those involved, to give a huge ’thank you’ not only to everyone who came and chatted to us but also to the staff at Budgens, who enabled us to have the display. It was good to see a number of familiar faces who either use our services or kindly support us, whilst also meeting new people who were local, as well as visitors to Holt. Their support, encouragement, interest and genorisity shown on the day, made the whole occasion most successful. Blakeney Garden

Dear Jo, GLAVEN CARING would like to thank David and Clare Marris for Opening their lovely Garden in Blakeney to the public for us, on June 9th, and to everyone that supported the event in any way.

We raised the grand total of £1,500.00, and David has applied for ‘match funding’ with Barclays Bank, which with past experience could be in the region of and additional £750.00 Our thanks to our volunteers, for all their help, including Chris Johnson, who entertained us, and hope everyone that visited enjoyed a lovely afternoon.

Democracy

Dear Jo, With reference to a letter from Maurice Land in the Holt Chronicle (No. 426) titled “Democracy is not Dead”. I was taught that Democracy means government of ALL the people or what the majority of people want. So how can Democracy still be alive when in 2016 the majority of people voted to leave the EU. Only certain members of Parliament, who I believe for their own advantage, refuse to go with the will of people, their Constituents, and vote for the Brexit deal. A few people may have changed their mind but this is because of all the scaremongering by Politicians. This Country survived very well before we joined the EU and it will survive and grow strong again. Brenda Mackay

However, today we were extra pleased when we were looking for something and asked for help and the lady and chap who came to our aid were exceptional in their efforts to help us. My Boss really did not like the move from horses to tractors. Many a time he would stop me from using the tractor. He said,’ There’s a horse in that stable. You are not wasting my money on fuel for that machine.’ He was getting older by now and his children were doing more of the everyday work. He would call in at the local pub for a game of dominoes with his friends. They would play as if their lives depended on it, though the stake was only who would pay for the half pint of beer they each had. The farm was only about 250 yards from the pub, but it was uphill, so he drove his car. On his way home, as it was downhill, he would let it roll out of gear to save money. He would then free wheel it into the shed where he kept it, and usually hit the wall at the back of the shed. ‘Whoah old girl!’ I would hear him shout. After a while the railway shut, and as I have told you I began my life on the road in a lorry. I would load my lorry with beet and leave for the sugar beet factory at 3am. As the factory opened at 6am, this might seem very early but I had two good reasons. One was that there was a long queue at the gates when the factory opened as everyone wanted to be processed first. If you got through quickly, you could dash back, reload and deliver up to five or six loads in a day. One crafty farmer let one of his tyres down so he could jump to the front of the queue. Once unloaded, he would nip to a nearby garage, re-inflate the tyre, and be on his way. My other reason was more personal. At that time of day, the roads were littered with roadkill. Drivers on the way home from the pub and beet lorries in front of me had taken their toll. I picked these up and sold them to a game dealer I knew in my village. I collected rabbits, hares, pheasants and partridges. One day I got almost a complete covey of partridge which had been hit by the lorry in front of me. I could make ÂŁ5 on a good day doing this, though at first the other drivers would stop when they saw me by the roadside thinking I had broken down. One of the other drivers who knew me well, waited till I had walked away from my lorry whilst we were parked at the factory and then pinched my haul for that morning. ‘Hey Les’ he said, ‘I picked a few rabbits and a hare this morning, do you want them?’ He then sold me my own haul.

The Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month. St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. The Church contains many interesting features, including a 14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi. The Church draws a congregation partly from outside the Village from those who value traditional services using the words of the Book of Common Prayer.

It was Trinity Sunday on 16th June when the Church once again celebrated that God is three distinct persons, the Father, the Son and God the Holy Spirit, united indivisibly in One. The Trinity is about intimate relationship and is sometimes depicted by three interconnected circles, overlapping as in a Venn diagram. Following Trinity Sunday, the Church enters ‘ordinary time’ when the liturgical colour is green, the colour of growth and renewal, for that is the product of close, interconnected relationship. Advances in technology mean that human beings are connected as never before, and yet in this age of hyperconnectivity there is the risk that humanity is becoming isolated as never before from God and from neighbour. We are disregarding our humanity in order to connect, without really connecting. Devotion to technology desensitizes people and impacts their ability to relate to the natural world and to real life. The technological connectedness of our age is often being used not to unite but to divide and separate. The internet can be used as a vehicle for hate and extremism by some, and by others more generally as a forum where they can casually be at their worst in a way they would not be if they were actually engaging with human beings in real life. It has been my huge privilege as Assistant Curate in Holt and High Kelling to have engaged with different circles in our community. As I reflect on the last three years, I realize that our community has been at its best when those different circles have overlapped in interconnected, real-life, face-to-face relationship; this is when the really fun, life-affirming stuff has happened. Our communal life will grow and flourish so long as we continue to dare to ‘get offline’ and blur the edges of our own circle so that strangers become neighbours and neighbours become friends. Thank you so much for making this Northern Irishman so welcome here. I know that Holt will always seem like home. God bless.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

There was an “End of Term� atmosphere at the last meeting of North Norfolk Photographic Society’s year in early June. In May, they held their ‘Annual’ competition for digital images – this time the best of the members’ prints were judged. Judge for the occasion was Ron Tear from Loughton, Essex. Ron after his name has the letters ARPS, MPAGB, BPE3*, PSA3*. He is very eminent and well qualified. Ron first of all judged the Novices’ prints. Winner was Hanne Seibers with Diana Knight ‘Evening Descends’. This beautiful A Helping Hand photograph of a sunset across a marshy landscape was one of 3 given 10 out of 10. Second was “Busy Bee� from Cheryl Howell – a bee covered in pollen working away in a wonderfully Cheryl Howell coloured flower. Third was Hanne Seibers again – “Wetlands After the Flood�. Busy Bee Ron Tear had serious work to do in judging more than 40 in the Advanced class. Ron found that 9 of them were good enough to get 10 out of 10 marks – and then had a difficult task in selecting the top three. After much deliberation, the top prize went to Diana Knight whose print “A Helping Hand� showed a small girl hand in hand with a soldier and being led, one hopes, to a place of safety. Second “Seapool� from Nick Akers – an infinity pool and the sea, with a paved edging just barely separating the two: you would not notice the join were it not for the metal rail from the pool steps! Third, “Gray Plover� which was a clever picture of the bird and its reflection, a few ripples in the water and hardly anything else. Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre, but for now break for the summer. However, the club’s Annual Exhibition will be taking place during Holt Festival week and hopefully will attract a lot of visitors.

Holt and District Probus Club

The Feathers in Holt after an excellent lunch was on 6th June the location for a fascinating talk to the Holt Probus Club by Stephen Pope about the Working Horse in Norfolk. Stephen works with the heavy horses at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse. Gressenhall is a Norfolk Museum well worth visiting, combining information about the former workhouse, which is the main building on the site, and also carrying on a working farm. Gressenhall’s farm was once used to grow produce for the inmates at the workhouse. Today they use the farm to demonstrate traditional farming techniques to visitors. Stephen spoke about the various breeds of heavy horse, but inevitably his interest concentrated on the Suolk Punch – East Anglia’s own and historic breed, which goes back to the 18th Century. Now mainly bred and kept by enthusiasts, they are kept at Gressenhall to demonstrate farming as it used to be done. The talk was illustrated by photographs that were shown on a screen. The Suolk in particular having served in wartime as well, was always the favourite in East Anglia for farm work, for its quiet temperament and willingness to work. The breed standard includes that the Suolk should have a “broad behind with good second thighsâ€? and the size and power of the animal are plain to see.

Salle Gardens Open Day for St Johns Ambulance

Here at the Salle estate we have been opening the gardens to support various charities for more than a decade. In the past we have mainly opened the gardens with the NGS and the RABI charities. This year we have decided to support a different charity. Salle Park is a traditional arable farming estate of around 5,500 acres, owned by Sir John White and has been in the white family for over 100 years. Beyond the award-winning farm, other areas of the estate are tended to by gamekeepers, foresters, house staff and gardeners. The Gardens will be opening on the 7th July, from 12-5pm. Tickets are £5 each (children free, dogs welcome on leads) with 100% of the proceeds going straight to St Johns Ambulance. Tea and cakes will be served in the Orangery, and are all hand made by the ladies (and gentlemen) of Salle village and these proceeds will go to Salle parish. When the gardens were opened 3 years ago for the NGS, the tea and cake money was spent on a play area on the village green. Salle Farms parking can be found at the Estate Christmas tree shop located on B1145 in between Reepham and Cawston (we can't give a post code as this will take people to the main hall). Salle Park gardens are opening the Walled garden and pleasure gardens. Dogs on leads welcome. St John Ambulance is the nation's leading first aid charity. Their volunteers provide first aid to local communities, keeping people safe at events, and working alongside the NHS in response to 999 calls. Every year, more than 400,000 people learn how to save a life through our training programmes, including hundreds of thousands of young people. They are also always campaigning to raise awareness of first aid and directly educate the public. On Wednesday, 5th June, 35 members from Weybourne WI enjoyed a day out at the Thursford Collection. We began our day in the museum, where we were able to wander amongst the many steam engines and musical organs, before having a ride on the merry go round. We were then entertained by Robert Wolfe, playing a selection of rousing tunes on the Wurlitzer organ, before we retired to the Garden Pavilion for a buffet lunch. After lunch we split into two groups for a backstage tour. It was fascinating to hear about the enormous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to produce the Christmas Spectacular Show each year and we especially enjoyed seeing the huge store of costumes. The tour concluded with a walk through Santa’s Magical Journey, which was eerily quiet at this time of year. Finally, we returned to the Pavilion for an informative talk by John Cushing on how his father started the Thursford Steam Collection and how the museum has grown and developed since John took over the business in 1977. Celia Howe gave a vote of thanks and we all agreed it had been a very enjoyable summer outing.

Jerk lobster, crab, coconut and pea rice

At the Grove we always believe that a little bit of effort goes a long way. This is a fairly complicated recipe but really rewarding and just perfect for a rip-roaring summer barbeque. Although the crab gets the plaudits, Cromer lobster is absolutely terrific and this dish is a firm favourite when it’s on during the season. There’s nothing quite like sitting outside with some cracking seafood and a chilled bottle of white; last season we had a few couples actually helicopter in and land on the lawn all to enjoy this incredible produce the fishermen pull in from the North Sea. The junior chefs were tempted to take the chopper for a joyride but we managed to apprehend them at the front door, there’s not a qualified pilot amongst them but apparently it looked ‘pretty easy to fly’. A lucky escape perhaps. We look forward to seeing you at the Grove this summer.

COCONUT RICE

• 140g of basmati rice • 1 tsp sunflower oil • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced • 1 garlic, peeled and finely sliced • 100g frozen peas • 1 large dressed crab • 100ml of coconut milk • 100ml of chicken stock

TO SERVE

• chopped coriander • 2 limes, halved

Wash the rice in several changes of water, then leave to soak in cold water for 30 minutes. For the jerk sauce, heat a large pan over a medium heat, then add the oil. Once hot, add the garlic, ginger, spring onions and chilli and fry for 2 minutes, then add the spices, rosemary, bay leaf and citrus zests and cook for a further 2 minutes. Add the sugar, soy sauce, citrus juices and chicken stock and bring to a simmer for 5 minutes until thickened and reduced, remove from the heat, add the coriander and a pinch of salt. Set aside to cool until required. Carefully cut the lobsters in half lengthways from head to tail, then remove the stomach sac from the head and the dark intestinal thread running along the length of the tail. Crack the claws and lay the lobster halves on a tray and spoon half the jerk sauce over them. Leave to marinate for 30 minutes while you light and heat up the barbecue. Meanwhile, prepare the rice. Place a pan with a tight-fitting lid over a medium heat and add a drizzle of oil. Once hot, add the spring onions and garlic and sweat for 2 minutes. Add the rice and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Pour in the coconut milk and stock and bring to a simmer. Turn the heat down to low, then cover with the lid on and cook gently for 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and leave to stand, still covered, for 5 minutes, then add the crab and peas, folding gently

To finish the lobsters, place the lobster claws on a white-hot barbecue and cook for 3–4 minutes. Turn the lobsters' claws over and add the lobster tails, shell side down, and the lime halves, cut side down. Club members had provided a wonderful buffet for the evening and the vote of thanks was given by Judith Follows. Jane Boulton the NAFAS Norwich Group Chairman judged the monthly competition entitled ‘Anyone for a Cocktail?’ and the People’s Choice winner was Christine Owen. Hans also stayed overnight and gave a wonderful workshop the next day at Cley Village Hall showing all who attended an innovative way to work without the use of floral foam. Fakenham building site burglary

Wildlife appeal, Walsingham

Police are appealing for information following the theft of bird eggs from a nest near Wells-next-the-Sea. It is believed that two Marsh Harrier eggs were removed from a nest on farmland in the Walsingham area last Saturday (1 June). Anyone who may have been in the area at the time and seen anything suspicious should contact PC Jason Pegden at Wells police station on 101, or alternatively, contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police are appealing for information following a burglary from a building site on Green Lane, Pudding Norton. The offender/s entered the site between 5pm on 14 June, and 9am on 17 June. Around £5000 worth of building supplies and equipment were stolen from the site. Anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area between the times stated, or anyone with information should contact PC Will Harlow at North Walsham Police Station on 101. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

The ‘Holt Youth Project’ are so pleased to confirm officially an award for the next 3 years from #NationalLottery. This is so vital in our objective for 2019, where we have taken back the project to the people of North Norfolk from the previous partnership with Ormiston Families. Our Lottery award is £333,593.00 over 3 years to deliver The Positive Choices Programme. We will deliver a programme to children and young people across north Norfolk, as well as a new programme supporting 18-30, young adults with emotional issues. This award was vital in this move back to our roots, enabling staffing and facilities to be brought back to a level such that we can drive the project forward and meet the demands of North Norfolk. Part of the award was that the project still delivered over £58K per annuum independently, so we are maintaining an active fundraising plan. The young people of Holt Youth Project would like to give a huge shout out to the great guys from Total Home & Garden Services who generously gave of their time and materials to build a sturdy fence to secure our allotment. Our enthusiastic group of young allotmenteers kept the workmen supplied with bacon rolls and mugs of tea. Julie Alford, founder of HYP told us ‘The allotment is a fantastic place for young people to learn new skills and it is so satisfying for them to turn what they have grown into meals which they can share with the group. As well as providing good fun and good exercise, our gardening links to education around the environment and nutrition’. So, thanks again guys – we are now completely safe from would-be Bean Burglars, Radish Raiders and Pea Poachers!

SUCCESS FOR CROMER PEREGRINES!

The pair of peregrine falcons seen around Cromer in earlier months successfully mated and laid three eggs on a nest platform hastily installed at the top of the tower. Thanks to a partnership formed by the North East Norfolk Bird Club (NENBC) with Cromer Parochial Church Council, Cromer Museum and Hawk & Owl Trust. A CCTV 50" monitor was installed in the church lounge/cafe, where church members and visitors are welcome. This is not available during services (9.30am-10.45am Weds. and 8.30am-12.15 Sun). Peregrines are a protected species and disturbing their nest site is an offence, therefore the tower is closed to visitors until further notice. The adult birds proved to be excellent parents and generated lots of interest with locals and visitors. The first chick hatched on 25 May with the other two following on 27 May. Cromer peregrines are possibly the latest to hatch in the UK and the chicks were ringed earlier this month to enable future sightings of the birds to be recorded when they fledge and leave the church. Thanks to the wonderful photography provided by Chris Skipper there are limited edition mugs on sale at ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ in Cromer to help raise funds for the church and further merchandising to go on sale at the Tourist Information office very soon. Since 2007, this group has provided a focus for the theatrical and associated talents (by kind permission of the Rugby Club) of Briston and nearby towns and villages, for people of all ages and abilities. From now until 24th July, every Wednesday , there is no better place to be than in St. Andrew’s Church at 1.10 pm listening to wonderful romantic music played by Mark Jones, retired Director of Music at Gresham’s, and presently Director of Music at St. Andrew’s Church. His first recital was on the 5th June and included in the varied programme was a piece by the great uncle of one of our residents of Holt. It was an amazing piece of music, superbly played by Mark which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Mark gives his time free for these concerts, however there is a voluntary donation for the Church’s Organ restoration fund. This is the second series of recitals and hopefully not the last.

SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY

8 members of the Society entertained the meeting on Monday 11th June with displays from their own collections. The range of subjects and styles of collection possible were evident from these brief presentations of 10 sheets each. The history of First Day Covers began the evening after which stamps relating to a member’s connections with the city of Hanover were shown. Early Guernsey stamps, dating from 1871 were followed by part of a collection of early Indian postmarks, including those from Governors’ and Viceroys’ camps, Railway Mail Services and Queen Victoria’s Coronation Durbar! Another member had recently acquired a box of Danish philatelic material and displayed a set of First Day Covers from the 1970s. A display of Australia’s beautiful commemorative stamp series of the First Fleet’s arrival in 1887, a mixed collection of PHQ cards each related to the interests of the collector, and examples of stamps from the Pacific islands completed the evening. The next meeting is on Monday July 8th, at 7.30pm in the Church Hall, West Runton

Holt Community Choir

Have you always wanted to sing in a choir but held back because you cannot read music? Are you a bit of a groaner so think you would not fit in? Or maybe you just love to sing, enjoy good company and like to laugh but were not sure which choir to join. Well do not worry, help is at hand and I can assure you the Community Choir IS for you. We have a regular attendance of around 60 singers each week incorporating a wonderful mixture of ages, voices and a range of abilities for both men and women. During the last few months the group has been meeting in the Parish Church Hall, Church Street, Holt so we can be taught by Mark Jones our conductor, to sing our hearts out. Often Mark just sings the music at us in sections and we then learn it by repeating the tune and words. Sometimes we have the words in front of us for well known songs like ‘Do you hear the people sing’ from Les Misérables and other well-known songs from this musical. Recently we have been singing four songs from ‘Oklahoma’ and a nonsense song about ‘A Cat Meditating’!! We have also sung an African lullaby, Native American chants, rousing pieces like ‘When the Saints go marching in’ and softer pieces like ‘Amazing Grace’, also some songs from the pop charts. You may like to suggest some songs we can try out. Sometimes we learn a song, then Mark splits the group by row or by section so we can sing in ‘a round’. This is great fun as you nearly always get lost but can always listen to your neighbours to make sure you are singing the right words at the correct time! When it all goes totally wrong, we have a good laugh and try again. As you can probable tell I thoroughly enjoy this singing session. We have a great time, we sing, we meet up with friends and from time to time we also have a glass of wine after the session!! I am sure you will find Mark’s energy and enthusiasm inspirational and you could well make new friends with your fellow singers. So why not come along and just give us a try. SCCS SUMMER CONCERT

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society returns to The Auden Theatre on Saturday 13 July at 7.30 pm for its end of season Summer Concert which features some wonderful 19th century music linked by a German theme. Sir Edward Elgar’s From the Bavarian Highlands was written in 1894 in homage to a memorable Bavarian holiday. The song lyrics were adapted to Elgar's music by the composer’s wife Alice. She gave the songs sub-titles in recollection of favourite places visited during the holiday. It will be performed in its original arrangement for piano accompaniment – perfect bright music for a summer evening. Elgar was greatly inspired by Johannes Brahms during his visits to Leipzig so it is very fitting that the programme includes Brahm’s highly popular German Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem) which will be performed in german with the original accompaniment for piano duet. Composed between 1865 and 1868 it comprises seven movements making this work Brahms's longest composition. A German Requiem is sacred but non-liturgical, and unlike the long tradition of the Latin Requiem, focuses on the living rather than the dead beginning with the text "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted" from the Beatitudes. Directed by David Ballard the choir will be joined by the popular Norfolk soloists Rebecca Kaznowski, soprano and Dhilan Gnanadurai, baritone. As they entered the stable of pride of the place, Pugilist the the prize-winning Percheron, there was a long rumble of equine flatulence. "I'm terribly sorry, Cordelia" said Theodora. Cordelia responded: "That's quite alright, Theodora, if you'd not said anything, I would have thought it was the horse!"

Exhibition of Paintings in Memory of June Norma Burrows

An exhibition of paintings by the late June N Burrows will be staged in the Picture gallery in Lees Yard Hold from the 2nd to the 15th of August 2019. All proceeds from sales will be donated to Alzheimer’s Research UK. Prices of paintings and prints will be reasonable and negotiable. June was a very good artist. Her work was realistic. She mainly painted landscapes and flowers in watercolours, but also many in oils. She has staged exhibitions of her work in Berlin, Gibraltar, Cyprus, Scotland and of course England. She had her own studio/gallery in Cyprus for six years where much of her work was printed and distributed through the island. She also had a gallery in Comrie in Scotland for four years. Since moving back to England she had a studio/gallery in Wighton for four years before finally settling in Holt in 2004, from when she has exhibited her work continually in the excellent Picture Gallery in Lees Yard until being overcome by Alzheimer’s in 2018. June Norma Burrows died peacefully at home on 30th of July 2018. The exhibition is of course open to everybody. All are welcome. Do come and look.

Legendary guitarist Gordon Giltrap to perform at Sharrington

Sharrington Village Hall is thrilled to announce a concert by the internationally acclaimed acoustic guitarist Gordon Giltrap on Saturday August 24th 2019. Gordon has been a large part of the music scene since the late 1960s. Many guitar legends including Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple) have cited him as an influence. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) and Pete Townshend of The Who are also admirers of Gordon’s work. In fact Pete is such a fan that he recently requested Gordon to join him for a recording session for one of the songs on the next album by The Who which is due for release later this year. He was most famous in the 1970’s when he toured extensively with 'The Gordon Giltrap Band' and released seminal albums such as 'Visionary' and 'Perilous Journey' from which his greatest hit 'Heartsong' was taken. Familiar to millions, it was chosen as the theme tune to the popular BBC 'Holiday' programme with Cliff Mitchelmore. Gordon's contributions to both music and charity were recognised this year when he was awarded the MBE of which he is rightly exceptionally proud. The Sharrington concert offers a chance not only to experience his incredible talent in an intimate venue but to meet him afterwards and get those treasured old vinyl albums and cds signed. The sound quality of the concert will be exquisite with top quality equipment, requested by Gordon, provided and monitored by MJPA Hire of Norwich. The concert commences at 7pm with doors opening at 6.30pm. There is a licensed bar. How to worry well

Too much anxiety and worrying creates stress, and too much stress can be very damaging to our physical and mental health. It can raise blood pressure, cause insomnia or IBS, and affect immunity and sex life. You may feel tense, often worry what other people think of you, feel disconnected, and the constant overthinking can sometimes lead to depression. We are all programmed to use our imagination to anticipate danger, and to prepare to deal with it. However, constant worrying and thinking about multiple 'What if's ….' is both ineffective and exhausting. So here is how to worry more effectively. Learn to 'worry well'. Set aside 30 minutes daily to properly think about your worries. Writing down your worries helps you to be more objective, eg: • “I am worried about …..” • “The worst that could happen is …..” • “Things I can do now are …...” Tiredness and hunger can lead to more negative thinking, so do your worrying after you've eaten, had a good sleep, and ideally after some exercise. Be more objective about important decisions, rather than continually worrying. Write things down and give yourself 'time off' until you feel ready to deal with it. This will give you more calm and understanding, and you'll make better decisions. Challenge your worrying thoughts. Ask yourself “What evidence is there for that?”, and “How likely is that, based on my past experience?” Learn to distinguish between possibility and probability. Learn to relax deeply. There are 2 states of mind that can't exist at the same time: anxiety and calmness. The deep relaxation and calm that comes with hypnosis and self hypnosis gives you more clarity and perspective and reinforces feelings of confidence and self belief. NORTHREPPS ARTIST EXHIBITING ARTWORKS AT THE 2019 SALISBURY INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL

As an active North Norfolk resident, you may be familiar with the name Katayoun Dowlatshahi. Not shy to support her local community, Katayoun organises the popular Thorpe Market Snowdrop Sunday fundraiser, sings and promotes Cantamus community choir, and engages with local children to reconnect with nature in an educational capacity. But did you know that Katayoun is a well-respected visual artist, printmaker & photographer? She was recently selected from over 400 applicants to show her work alongside 6 other artists at the Salisbury International Arts Festival in Wiltshire. The exhibition, Insatiable Mind, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the moon landings and runs until the 16th July 2019. Public commissions form a large part of her professional practice because of her unique talent at incorporating art into the fabric of public spaces and buildings. Her current public art schemes include Rochester Riverside in Kent, Cleethorpes seafront in North East Lincolnshire and Kingston Bridge in Kingston upon Thames in Surrey.

Wishing to share her passion for art and nature she has recently launched a programme of drawing, photography and environmental workshops including willow weaving from her Silverwood Studio. Katayoun is offering bespoke group and individual sessions and mentoring, in historic photography and darkroom work. Over and above her professional work, Katayoun is keen to support North Norfolk talent and is working with the PCC to improve the exhibition facilities at Thorpe Market church making this a popular and well visited venue for North Norfolk artists, photographers and makers. First Art Exhibition in Lessingham Methodist Chapel

Quilts are wonderful things – all shapes, all sizes, all colours, all patterns, all very different and rarely, if ever(?) two the same. They are designed and sewn with love. Each one has its own reason for being, maybe a celebration, maybe reminiscences, maybe a life story – the possibilities are endless. Many quilts are made for charities such as Nelson’s Journey where a quilt is given to each child who receives support. Quilts are also welcomed at the hospitals where they are used to cover incubators for new-born babies. The incubators need to be covered at night to create a period of darkness so that new-borns learn the difference between night and day. One of the display items will be a friendship quilt - this was created from strips of patchwork, contributed by members of the Mustard Seed Quilt Group. Over the course of 10 months, 10 members each produced one strip per meeting, measuring 24” x 4”. These strips were then shared between the members - each member to make their own keepsake. Ros Peedle decided to make hers into a friendship quilt and this will be on display. Nelson Quilt Group has just been doing the same. Their own works will be completed and shown at their meeting on 3rd July. We very much hope that one or two will be on show at Lessingham later in the week. You will be able to see some of this wonderful work at the exhibition in Lessingham Methodist Chapel between Tuesday 2nd and Saturday 6th July. The exhibition combines the worlds of quilting, art and photography. The exhibition is open between Tuesday 2nd and Saturday 6th July each day from 10.00am to 4.00pm and will remain open to 7pm on Friday 5th July. Entry is free and tea, coffee and home-made refreshments will be available.

Over the last few weeks the rowers of Blakeney have been active at home and abroad. The expedition to the Golfe du Morbihan, between May 27th and 2nd June, was a great rowing experience for veterans of previous years and for first timers. Rowing for much of the time in the sun, it was a week of adventure in great company. Places on the itinerary included Ile d’Arz, Arradon, Locmariaquer, Saint-Goustan, Le Logeo, Larmor-Baden, Port Navalo and Plougoumelen. The crews’ leisure and rowing time was expertly organized by Adrian Hodge and our Breton hosts welcomed all participants at the staging posts – sometimes with a glass of wine. There was ample opportunity to sample the local food. Evenings were spent swapping the day’s tales in the most entertaining way. The Grand Parade, at the end of the week, was an incredible spectacle with hundreds of tall ships and rowing craft travelling together towards Conleau. Many thanks to Lynn and Adrian Hodge for towing and to Stephen Temple for transporting crew to the meeting points so efficiently. Meanwhile, back home, regular Blakeney outings have continued despite the inconsistencies in the weather and it has been a pleasure to welcome new members. At the time of writing, forthcoming events include a race at Manningtree on 16th June, the Lowestoft First Light Festival on 22nd and 23rd June, another Wells to Blakeney row on 7th July and the Canvey Island Race on 20th July. Watch this space for reports on all these exciting events. Come along and try rowing for yourselves. No previous experience is needed, just a taste for the adventure and fun highlighted above. You don’t have to take part in any of the race events. Social rowing is great too. You are entitled to three sample rows before deciding whether to join and coaching is always on offer. Multicultural Week!

Holt Primary School has been very busy this past week hosting a mega multicultural week. To enhance the learning of other cultures and to contribute to their application for an International Schools Award, the school went off curriculum for the week and celebrated other countries around the world. Each class chose a different country, including Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, India, Japan, Brazil and Peru, and spent the week immersed in the geography, language, art, music and food of their chosen country. Thanks to the kindness of grants donated by Norfolk Music Hub, StArt (St Andrew's Church) and the 'Friends' of the school, each class also participated in a workshop lead by professional musicians and dancers. The week culminated in a 'journey around the world', as each child took their passport with them to explore the different countries around the school. It was a wonderful week that the children will never forget!

Lawn bowls, for better or worse, has two national governing bodies: the English Bowling Federation (EBF)_ and Bowls England. Subject to appropriate fees, individual bowlers may play in competitions of either (which can keep them excessively busy) but clubs are generally affiliated to one or the other. Holt is affiliated to the Federation. As a result, the Federation has chosen Holt for the last two years as their home ground for one of the men’s inter county competitions. The “Adams Trophy” is a knock out competition for all 13 of the “old” counties who affiliate to the Federation. Norfolk competes in the South Division, entailing five fixtures. This May saw the “Adams Team” compete at Holt against Lincolnshire in the first of their three home games. Lincolnshire took an initial lead of 10 shots in the first 10 (of 31 ends) but, although Norfolk recovered a bit in the next 10 ends, the comeback could not be sustained and eventually Lincolnshire triumphed by 18 shots. At a more local level, the Club ran its own competition on spring bank holiday Monday. This was its annual intra-club tournament, a friendly event with members playing in drawn teams during three sessions of “triples” (3 in a team). There was a good turnout and the day started with tea and coffee and then seven ends of bowls were played before a ploughman’s lunch was enjoyed in the clubhouse by the participants. Two further sessions of seven ends were played in the afternoon. Players kept their individual scorecards throughout the day and when totted up the winner was Astrid Weller, who was presented with a bottle of rosé wine. Despite damp and uncertain weather, about 20 newcomers were attracted to our “Meet and Greet”, to see our facilities and to have a go on the Green (and then in the clubhouse for tea and cake). We now hope to see them again at one of our “roll-ups” at 1:45 on a Monday or Thursday. Why not you?

High Sheriff of Norfolk, Lady Agnew Opens Hospice Shop

The sun was shining in Holt on Friday 24th May for the official opening of newest and 16th member to the East Coast Hospice Shop family by Lady Agnew, High Sheriff of Norfolk. East Coast Hospice, an independent charity and is raising funds to build and run a ten-bed specialist palliative care inpatient and day care facility. Margaret Chadd House, as the hospice will be called, will provide a supportive, caring, holistic environment giving peace and dignity for both patients and their families. The shop is brimming with eclectic delights so pop along to The Feathers Barn, Holt, NR25 6BW and have a look at the treasure trove of pre-loved donations. New volunteers are also very welcome to come along and speak to the shop manager Julie, have a cuppa and find out how the time you can give, can make such a difference to so many.
