PLANNING APPLICATION FOR £4.15 MILLION CANCER CENTRE AT CROMER HOSPITAL GOES IN
Plans for a proposed £4.15million cancer care and support centre at Cromer and District Hospital have been submitted. Macmillan Cancer Support has been working with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop proposals for the centre, which will be called the North Norfolk Macmillan Centre. The plans, involving the refurbishment and extension of a disused ward, will now be considered by North Norfolk District Council. If permission is granted, building work is expected to take around a year. The proposed centre will enable patients, many of whom currently travel to Norwich, to have their treatment and access support services closer to home. The centre, on the site of the former Davison Unit, will include: • Six chemotherapy treatment chairs with capacity to treat up to 36 patients a day. • Three new clinic rooms and two new minor procedure rooms, creating an additional 10,000 outpatient appointments annually. • A Macmillan cancer information and support centre. • The new unit will also free up space in the main Cromer Hospital building to deliver an extra 600 surgical procedures in dermatology, urology, vascular surgery and pain management. The majority of funding for the centre will come from Macmillan Cancer Support, which is providing up to £2.2 million and Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity, which is contributing £1.5million. The remaining £450,000 is coming out of NNUH Trust funds. The number of people living with cancer is growing and predicted to rise from 2.5million today to four million by 2030. In Norfolk, around 6,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year. There are approximately 35,300 people living with cancer in the county. Gwyneth Tyler, Macmillan Head of Services for South and East England, said “It is fantastic to see this crucial project, which will improve cancer care for so many people in North Norfolk, move another step forward with the submission of the planning application. “If permission is granted, this centre will help to meet the growing need
Artist’s impression showing the front of the planned North Norfolk Macmillan Centre
for people to get treatment and support closer to home. “Of course, this type of project is only possible thanks to people’s generosity. At Macmillan, we are entirely reliant on public donations and that support is what enables us to be there for people living with cancer and the people who support them.” Mark Davies, NNUH Chief Executive, said “We run one of the biggest cancer centres in the country and the expansion of Cromer Hospital is a key part of our plans to provide the best care for patients with cancer.” Currently, Cromer Hospital provides a range of acute out-patient and day case services and has a minor injuries unit. The trust provides acute hospital care to a catchment area of almost 830,000 people from Norfolk and neighbouring counties. The original 1930s Cromer Hospital was redeveloped at a cost of £15million in 2012 and provides a wide range of consultant-led outpatient services, day case operations and a Minor Injuries Unit open seven days a week. County Councillor News
from County Councillor Dr Marie Strong Wells Division (Glaven, Priory and Walsingham Wards) marie.strong@norfolk.gov.uk; 07920 286 597
Introduction of 5G Mobile Networks: I have received a number of questions regarding this topic ranging from: when will it be available where I live; what about health matters; planning permission for tall masts. The latter, planning, is dealt with by North Norfolk District Council but as a result of my enquiries at NCC our Head of IMT has asked questions across the council and by the time you read this there should be a specific web page on NCC’s web site with information, questions, and answers. Norwich Western Link – or the final stretch of what was called the NDR: As I write, 15 July, NCC’s Cabinet has agreed Option C as its preferred route for the Norwich Western Link. Apart from information in the local press again I recommend NCC’s web page (Library staff will always help you find the information if you do not use a computer at home). The cost is set at £153m and an application is to be made to the government for funding. Whilst there is support for completion of the road some would prefer different options. Still others object to the cost and you will have read and heard of the objections because of potential negative impact on the environment as a result of the work. I do know there are councillors who feel very strongly that the final stretch will make a vast improvement to the lives of their residents and the economy of their divisions. What I do know is that I do not have a vote on this project. Further I am told there will be little benefit from completion of the road to my division. Wells Division Roads: What I do know is that Wells Division has 191.2 miles of road of which 18.2 miles are A roads; 17.4 miles are B roads; 89.3 miles are C roads – and 66.3 miles are ‘other roads’ i.e. unclassified. You will understand that therefore I am particularly interested in the following item.
Norfolk’s Roads: Some if not all of you will have read NCC’s Officer Advice that £36m is needed to bring Norfolk’s roads back to a suitable standard. I am hopeful that rural divisions like mine which will not benefit directly from expenditure on the Western Link will benefit by essential improvements to their roads which must be brought to and kept to a standard which will stop our rural communities from suffering further from rurality. Lord Gary Porter: Lord Porter has just stepped down after four years as Chairman of the Local Government Association. You may recall I have expressed my appreciation of his work on a number of occasions and found it important to quote him at county council for whilst a Conservative he has never been afraid to take the government to task – regarding amongst important topics as Sure Start for young children and affordable housing. Additionally he has achieved much through his commitment to cross party working because ‘there is far more that unites us than divides us’. Something for all we councillors to remember. Norfolk Recycling Centres Amnesty Days: Look out for more details about Recycling Centres and ‘amnesty’ for items not usually taken in by our centres. Hempton Recycling Centre will be offering amnesty on the 6, 7 & 8 September from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. (And remember Wells Centre now has a Reuse Shop and is keen to receive items for the staff to check over and offer for sale – profit to supporting the shop and the NCC’s Recycling Centres chosen charity.) Information regarding NCC Road Maintenance and reporting potholes: A further reminder because not enough potholes are being reported directly by eagle eyed residents. Rather than wait until you get to a local council meeting or bump into one of your councillors go to: http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/potholes. Report it directly, get it repaired faster. (And on the website read more fascinating facts about highways matters.) Upwards and onwards

News from The Holt Community Centre
It’s been a very busy summer at the Centre, with French Kriss’ fantastically successful first Disco Night followed by all the many and varied talents from Holt Festival enlivening our town once again. Around 100 people danced the night away to an incredible collection of mixed music, an awesome sound system and the most amazing laser light show! An astonishingly high quality night for only £5.00. Kriss will return in September for another night – check our website for details. We were thrilled last week to host the very first Children’s Art Prize at the Centre, with the 200 children from Holt Primary School amazing us with their creative flair. The result was a fabulous exhibition of art on the theme of Love Holt, available to view in the Centre for the whole of the Festival. A team of artists worked for a week with the pupils, using a range of art techniques, and the prizes were donated by a number of organisations and individuals from the town. Special thanks to the artists, Tess Ainley, Emma Blount, Agatha Berning, Phil Barrett and Grace Flowerday who helped me to run the workshops in the School, and also to Love Holt, Anwen Hurt, Holt Festival, Tim Goodwin, St Andrews Church, The Holt Society, The Library, Phil Barrett and Rob Berning, who all sponsored the Art Prize in various ways; we are so thankful for your support and generosity. Thank you also to our judges, Artists Beverley Scott and Rainie Kay, our Mayor Rodney Smith and Holt Festival Artistic Director Anwen Hurt for judging the competition. 12 individual prizes were awarded, and 3 collaborative prizes for the younger classes, and the judges had a very hard time deciding! The Centre is looking like a totally different building inside now, and we are looking forward to welcoming the first of our new community of artists in the new ArtSpaces studios. Hopefully art will start appearing on the walls around the centre soon, so do please pop in and have a look! The 9th of August sees our Black Shuck Norfolk Gin Night, an exciting mix of Gin, Vodka and liqueur tasting, with delicious antipasti, cheeses and nibbles, and live music by The Lighters. With all Black Shucks amazing gifts on sale too it’s going to be a fun night…book early to avoid disappointment. As always, all the profits from the fundraising evening goes to the Charity, to support the Centre. For more details of what’s on, please call 01263 713427 or email holtcommunitycentre@gmail.com. Holt & Neighbourhood Housing Society
Secretary Needed The Society manages 37 properties in and around Holt. Our aim is simple, to provide affordable homes for local people in housing need. Our rents match other housing associations and are no more than 75% of the local open market level. We are a genuine local Society not bound by the rules other larger Housing organisations must follow. Allowing us to keep to our ‘local’ pledge. The managing committee, including Chairman, secretary and Treasurer are all local people, giving their time for free. Perhaps the most important role being that of secretary, who will have most initial dealings with our tenants. Our present secretary Gemma is having to step down for personal reasons, (though will be remaining on our committee). We need someone who can take on this position, although not paid, we will provide a computer, printer as well as a dedicated phone. If anyone feels like putting something back into the community, this is possibly the job for you. Gemma can be contacted on 07415 815910 or hnhs@hotmail.co.uk is happy to discuss the role and will support the new secretary as much as needed.

A Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable
Sugar Beet Wars! Part 4 by Leslie Kinsley My promotion, and the extra hours I worked made one of the other men very jealous. He started to stir up the others to make life difficult for me when the boss was away. To make matters worse, he had a nasty friend among the other lorry drivers and he set him on to make life hard there too. In the end, I had had enough and decided to act. He was ahead of me in the factory queue one day so I jumped out of my lorry at the weigh station to the shock of the lady taking details there. My enemy was washing the back of his lorry and could not drive away. I caught him and gave him a good hiding, delivering a final kick to his behind as he scrambled into his cab to escape. Other drivers came over to watch and one of them shouted. ‘Give him one for me Leslie, he owes me £40 and I can’t get it off him’ I realised that none of the other drivers liked him. When I got back to the farm, my boss called me in to say he had heard what I had done. I was defiant and said I had had enough of the spite. He didn’t punish me and things calmed down then, but I got the nickname ‘Fighting Leslie’ from the local farmers. Ministry officials used to turn up at the factory to check if we had overloaded our lorries. I was never bad enough to get into trouble, but some of the contract drivers were always loaded to a dangerous level. We would warn other drivers in the queue of the official presence, and they would drive past the factory to a market garden nearby. He allowed them to unload their surplus and by the end of the season, he had enough beet to make himself a fair bit of cash. He obviously knew a grower who had permits for the factory. Occasionally the ministry would pull us in at a testing station by Kings Lynn Cattle Market. One December, I remember, someone had hung paper chains at the office window there. I remarked to the official, ‘I don’t want one of your Christmas Boxes’ I was never usually cheeky, and somehow, I never got into trouble with them.

such care. All donations received, amounting to £456.90, have been forwarded to Holt Dementia Support (Poppy Cafe) in appreciation of a very much needed and worthy cause. I would also like to mention the excellent care and kindness given to my husband during his final days, by the doctors and palliative care team at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Kimberley Ward, and the kindness and consideration shown to my family at this time.

SUNDAY SERVICES
Dear friends, The summer holidays are upon us once again. Schools are out and the beaches and the countryside echo to the sound of young and old enjoying the beauty of North Norfolk. For a few weeks an increase in visitors and tourists boost the number of the population in our sparsely populated corner of England. The summer provides an opportunity for some relaxation and renewal by taking time out from the daily routine of ordinary life. When the sun is shining there is no where I would rather be than enjoying everything that Norfolk has to offer. Yet we tend to live increasingly busy lives. Even in retirement I hear people say they wonder how they ever had time to go to work! It is easy to fill our time with activity that we sometimes neglect our need to relax and recharge our batteries. Every day of the week seems the same and we have lost touch with the tradition of one day of rest out of seven. Long gone is the tradition of keeping Sunday special and Sunday has long been no different to any other day of the week. The idea of keeping Sunday as the Christian Sabbath, a day that is set apart as a holy day of rest is one that is grounded in the bible and the stories of creation in which God rested on the seventh day. The Ten Commandments command us to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. I remember as a child Sunday had a very different feel to any other day of the week. Swimming lessons before attending church, a roast Sunday lunch followed by an afternoon visit to grandparents, Sunday tea and a visit from great aunts and uncles. It was a day that revolved around the family and a day of abstinence from any unnecessary work and we all benefited from it. We all need time out our daily routine for our own well-being. The pressures of modern living make it even more important that we make time for ourselves and for those whom we care about, a weekly rest day and holidays provide us with that time and benefit us greatly. However, you plan to spend what remains of the summer I hope you can create time to enjoy it and spend time with family and friends. Happy Holidays! Fr. Howard

24 years of service
After 24 years of service with Bakers & Larners Maureen Hooker decided to retire from the company at the end of June. To say she will be missed by staff and customers is an understatement. Maureen has been a key member of the team and during her employment has probably undertaken almost every single role within the store. She started by washing up in the restaurant and progressed to Head of Department. Under her leadership the company won a number of national awards and Maureen was personally recognised by the industry in 2014 when she was awarded the Best Buyer Manager award. Maureen is looking forward to spending more time with her family although she has also promised to be a regular in the store to keep us on our toes!
Holt and District Probus Club
The July meeting of Holt and District Probus Club started as usual with a quality lunch served up by the staff at The Feathers in Holt. Afterwards, Roy Beckley spoke about the North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club. Roy who is a founder member of the club, said that the original meeting that led to its formation had been in The Feathers and they now have a strong membership who own some hundreds of classic cars and other vehicles. The question was asked: what is a classic car? The answer is “It depends”! A mass production car would have to be perhaps 25 or more years old, but top notch cars – Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar and so on, can be more recent. The club takes part in a number of events, such as the North Norfolk Railway Vintage Transport Day, Gresham Classic Car Show & Country Fair, Wroxham & Hoveton Scouts Classic Car Show and their own “Show ‘n Shine” at Sheringham Golf Club. The talk was illustrated with photographs shown on a screen. Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782. Refer also to https://holtprobusclub.wordpress.com/

Our next club meeting will be on Monday 5th August when we will have a floral art demonstration by Barbara Collins from Peterborough. Our latest trip to Malawi……
Not wrestling with mosquito nets in the black of night or checking shoes for scorpions - just some of the more positive points of returning to the UK! However, Malawi’s in a mess. You may remember that Cyclone Idai tore through the country in March, Heavy rains caused massive flooding, many died, well over half a million people were affected, and the President declared a state of emergency. The high winds devastated our area, breaking down homes, destroying outside kitchens, toilets and other essential buildings, and flattened the maize crop, nearly ready for harvest, in the fields. So, we immediately set to work—we distributed emergency food, repaired boreholes to restore clean, safe water to thousands, and built the first 50 toilets for vulnerable families, for health, privacy, and to minimise the possibility of disease. Boys with tyre As time went on, we checked previous projects—all 5 Community Centres still successfully house nursery schools and other events— over 40 families ran to them during the storms and floodwater, in the middle of the night, to seek emergency shelter and safe housing until their own homes dried out and had been patched up. The bridges we built over the years are still in robust condition despite the high levels of water that hammered them during the cyclone, providing safe crossing points for hundreds. But the storms destroyed large swathes of maize—the staple diet—stealing a whole year’s food from desperate people. The usual “hunger time” stretches from Christmas till the next maize harvest in March/April, so we’ve bought in 15,000kgs of maize (basis for 60,000 meals) which will help about 800 people get through that acute period. But with fields devastated by the disaster, so many have already eked out their meagre maize reserves and are now hungry. Would you consider helping them? We can bring in more maize with more resources. Just over £9 will provide the basis for 200 meals and feed a vulnerable family for a month. Sadly, we can’t feed everyone, but we are always keen to help just one more….. Please help us. You can donate by dropping cash or cheque into our shop (see below), transfer electronically via our website: (www.aid-africa.com/donations.html) or contribute via PayPal (using email info@aid-africa.com). Together, we can change lives, please partner with us today! And, another way to help those in Malawi—could you spare 3 hours a week to help in our Charity shop in Holt? We greatly value our wonderful volunteers—thank you ladies for your dedication over the years! But if we’re to keep our shop open to support the work in Malawi, we need more help. Please contact us below and ask to speak to Jenny or Jacqui.
Many thanks, for all your support and encouragement. Lynda Mills, Aid Africa, Charity Shop:7 Shirehall Plain, Holt, NR28 6HT 01263 713641 - www.aid-africa.com
FLOWER ARRANGING
DEMONSTRATION AT WEYBOURNE WI
On Wednesday, 3rd July, over 40 members and visitors attended Weybourne WI to watch a fascinating demonstration of flower arranging given by Crystal Dyball. The meeting began with several items of business, including feedback from Caroline Purkiss (Holt WI), who had attended the Annual Meeting in Bournemouth as our representative. Crystal created four very different arrangements, using a wide variety of flowers and foliage. These included a table display, an arrangement in a tall terracotta pot, another in a large cocktail glass and finally a beautiful display in a whicker trug. At the end of the afternoon these were donated as raffle prizes, which created a last minute flurry to purchase extra tickets. As she worked, Crystal described how her career with flowers has developed over the past 30 years. She runs a variety of classes and workshops and will soon be starting a class in Aylsham, at which new members would be very welcome. She stressed that her classes are very lighthearted with a focus on fun, friendship and flowers. Several members expressed an interest in attending. For further information contact: crystalflowers@myphone.coop The vote of thanks was given by Lesley Clarke.

BRISTON DAY CENTRE NEWS
9th WEYBOURNE FOLK WEEKEND
The 9th Weybourne Folk Weekend starts at 7.30pm in the Village Hall on Friday 2nd August. As well as local singers and musicians the main attraction that evening are ‘Rattlebox’, a lively, raucous Folk Group all the way from Corpusty. On Saturday 3rd August we have a wide range of performers. Local singers and musicians start the afternoon at 2.00pm followed by ‘Poacher’ a fine close-harmony trio from Norwich. We continue with ‘5 Shades of Grey’ a well-respected local group led by ace melodeon player Robbie Nash. The star of the afternoon is Kevin Dempsey who surely is an amazing guitarist/singer of international standing. On Sunday 4th August our main attraction is Jez Lowe from County Durham. He has been a stalwart of the folk scene for many years and is a prolific songwriter and excellent performer of many songs based around his native North East. Support will be provided by Phil Riley & Neil Mercer a well-known duo from Leicestershire. Also, we have the Blakeney Old Wild Rovers with their own unique brand of Sea Songs and Shanties. On Saturday Night we have our usual Ceilidh/Barn dance at the Village Hall with the ‘Bounty Hounds’. Always a fun night, come and join in to the instructions given by the caller or just watch others doing their best to keep up! Tickets are £7.00, children free. Bring your own food and drinks. Alternatively, we have a free singaround in the back room of the Ship Inn for non-dancers. All events are free, apart from the Ceilidh/Barn dance. Further details and a free programme by e-mail is available from Tony Baylis 01263 588781 or tonyandcarmen@btinternet.com
What don’t we do at the Centre! We don’t just sit and chat or play bingo, instead we love going out and about and having fun! During the last few weeks we had a return visit to see the beautiful Stody Gardens, a trip on the North Norfolk Railway followed by lunch in Sheringham, and a lovely ride to Bircham Windmill for a ploughmans lunch. At the Centre Neil Fippard did a Beatle Drive for us which had us in fits of laughter, Heather had us jumping up and down in our seats with her Extend exercises and Mick Leary had some of us dancing and singing along when he played his Yamaha keyboard to us and told us lots of jokes! We would like to say a very big thank you to Keith Jeary and R.C. and M.E. Edmondson Trust for the very generous donation which will enable us to have a special day out. If you are retired or nearly-retired, and you think you could enjoy doing these sorts of things with our lovely band of ‘regulars’ then why not ‘phone Dorothy or Carol on a Monday or Thursday, on 01263 861120, to book a ‘taster’ session or just pop in and say ‘hello’ and find out more about us! We meet every Monday and Thursday at All Saints Community Centre. All Saints Close, Briston, from 9.30am - 2.30pm.

RNLI honours volunteer crewman who’s served fifty years of saving lives at sea
Sixty-eight-year-old Phil Eaglen has been a volunteer on the Wells Lifeboat crew for more than fifty years - unique achievement that will be impossible to match today. Phil joined the lifeboat in July 1967 after he was persuaded to volunteer by his then boss, Sam Abel, who owned a shop and chandlers. Phil said, “He said to me I should do it. “So, when the maroons went off, which was the signal for a launch back then, I ran all the way down to the boathouse from the town and volunteered there and then.” Phil didn’t get on the shout as he hadn’t been trained but it was the start of a volunteering career spanning more than fifty years. Phil, the emergency mechanic on the crew, says, “It probably wouldn’t be possible to be a volunteer for this length of time these days, as you’re supposed to retire now at sixty-five and you can’t join ‘til you’re seventeen at the earliest.” In fact, Phil should have retired already but he keeps having his retirement delayed because of crew circumstances on the station. The most recent was the retirement of coxswain/mechanic, Allen Frary. Before that it was when Allen broke his leg, then again while Nicky King was being trained up as the new coxswain/mechanic. So he has had his time extended again. Being on the crew now runs in the family. Both his son Darren and his granddaughter Angel are on the crew. Darren received a letter of commendation for his part in rescuing dinghy sailor who’d capsized in blustery conditions in Burham Overy Harbour in 2010. Phil will receive a 50 Year service badge which is to be presented to him by RNLI’s chief executive, Mark Dowie at the 150th Anniversary of the RNLI in Wells. Phil was also invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace where he met the Duke of Kent who is Patron of the RNLI. Phil was allowed to take one guest, so he chose his granddaughter Angel to accompany him. Phil said, “It was a great occasion, even though it rained, it didn’t spoil things.” He said, “it was so well organised, there were seven thousand people there. It was amazing.” Lifeboat Operations Manager, Chris Hardy, said, “It’s right Phil should be honoured. He is the backbone of the crew and can always be called on when there’s an emergency. It’s amazing to think he been on the crew for a third of the time there’s been an RNLI Station in Wells.” Also honoured at the 150th Anniversary Celebrations will be Fred Whittaker who will be presented with his 40 Year Service badge and Martin Emerson who will be presented with a 20 Year Service badge.

Kharn’s little brownie
Afternoon tea on the lawns are a big part of the Grove and hundreds of people enjoy our lovely food and top-quality gardens (under the fabulous Estate team headed by Nigel) every year. Our chefs love coming up with creative ideas for afternoon teas and the appropriately-named Kharn Brown came up with a cracking t for little brownies, now firmly ensconced on Plate Two and very much appreciated by all who put them in their mouth.
Please do come and see us to try Kharn’s little brownie (and the rest of the afternoon tea) between 2 and 4.30pm every day (24-hour booking essential 01263 512412). 185g unsalted butter 200g best dark chocolate 85g plain flour 40g cocoa powder 50g white chocolate 50g milk chocolate 3 large eggs 275g golden caster sugar

žsÂŤ – 8sÂŤs’ˆž $ÂąÂ¤Ăˆ
1. Cut the unsalted butter and dark chocolate into small cubes and tip into a medium bowl and melt over boiling water, stirring occasionally. When melted leave to cool to room temperature.
2. While you wait for the chocolate to cool, position a shelf in the middle of your oven and turn the oven on to 180C/ 160C fan/ gas 4.
3. Using a shallow 20cm square tin, cut out a square of non-stick baking parchment to line the base. Sieve the flour and the cocoa powder into a medium bowl.
4. Chop the white chocolate and the milk chocolate into chunks on a board.
5. Break 3 large eggs into a large bowl and tip in the golden caster sugar. Whisk the eggs and sugar until thick and creamy.
6. Pour the cooled chocolate mixture over the eggy mousse, then gently fold together.
7. Reseive the cocoa and flour mixture over the mousse and fold in.
8. Finally, stir in the white and milk chocolate chunks until they’re dotted throughout.
9. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, put in the oven and set your timer for 25 mins.
Holt and District Rotary
On Tuesday 25th June Greg Cooper became the 63rd President of Holt and District Rotary. Greg, who is Treasurer of the Blakeney Harbour Association and the chair of the Holt Dementia Friendly Community Support Group, is keen for Rotary to move forward and make further contributions in the local community. He reflects on the words of Paul Harris, founder of Rotary International in the 1920s, who said “We live in a changing world and Rotary must change with it.â€? Greg challenges Holt Rotary to invite 8 new members and raise ÂŁ5000 during his year in the chair. Quite a task! But knowing what local Rotarians can do when challenged, they will be up for it. The last time Rotary in the area faced a challenge it came from Sir Norman Lamb at a Community Lunch and the result was that Holt Rotary was instrumental in raising over ÂŁ25000 to help fund specialist Admiral Nurses working in North Norfolk. Watch what happens!

Marine and Wildlife Rescue - Sir David the grey seal release from the Caister Lifeboat Crew and we managed to cut the netting off and release instantly. Unfortunately, calls received for entangled seals have rocketed in recent years .We attend, on average, at least one a month, often collaborating with volunteers from
Going
On Wednesday 3rd July, Sir David, an atlantic grey seal, was released back into the North Sea having spent exactly 3 months at East Winch Wildlife Centre. He had been at the RSPCA facility undergoing treatment for an embedded frisbee cutting deep into his neck.
was transferred to the RSPCA seal hospital. The video of the moment he was captured can be viewed on our facebook page. Had it not been for our strategic planning and the vigilance of the persons who spotted him on a visit to the colony at Horsey, we may have lost the opportunity to capture him. Make sure your dog is Mr or Ms Cool
Summer has finally arrived and the feel of the warmth and heat after the winter is just fabulous. Outcome the shorts and tee shirts but please remember that your dog doesn’t have this option and summer can bring a range of problems for our dogs. Including dehydration, sunburn and heatstroke, all of which can be fatal. So, make sure your dog is Mr (or Ms) cool this summer and have fun. Here’s our Animal Magic top tips for a safe summer with your dog: • Don’t leave your dog in the car – even in the shade with windows open the temperature can soar turning your car into an oven. Remember - dogs die in hot cars. • Try to walk your dog in the cool of the morning or evening and if you really must walk at lunchtime choose a sheltered lane or wood. And never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather. • Consider having your dog’s coat clipped for the summer, most breeds seem to really appreciate this, if you cannot bear the thought of an all over clip then opt for just a tummy clip so your dog can make
contact with cool surfaces. • Provide your dog with a wet towel to lie on and/or a wet towel over their body • Your dog will enjoy a shady spot to lie in but during the hottest part of the day they might be more comfortable indoors. • If your dog goes off their food try to feed them later in the evening when it is cooler and you will usually find their appetites return. • Always carry water with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts. •Most dogs enjoy a paddle or swim and it will help them keep cool but always dry off their ears and under collars to avoid irritations. There are loads of dog ice cream recipes on the internet but a really quick and simple one is to blend 3 bananas, 32 oz of Greek yogurt and 1 cup of unsalted smooth peanut butter and put it in moulds. This will give you lots of treats for hot days, you might even enjoy one yourself! "Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noonday sun." - Indian Proverb

EAST OF ENGLAND FACES ‘HEALTH WORKFORCE CRISIS’, SAYS SIR NORMAN LAMB
Former health minister’s comments come as data shows over half of advertised consultant posts in the region failed to result in an appointment.Sir Norman Lamb has described the challenge faced by the East of England’s healthcare system as “a mountain to climb” after data showed that the region’s health workforce faces real challenges. The data, collected by the Royal College of Physicians, shows that the East of England healthcare system is struggling to with recruitment. Over half (51%) of the advertised consultant posts in the region did not result in an appointment; while 58% of consultants reported encountering rota gaps as there were not enough trainees. Sir Norman raised his concern that, as well as facing a short term recruitment crisis, there is a great challenge to come over the next two decades – the figures show that 37% of East of England consultants will reach the planned average retirement age over the next decade while 45% will reach the age of 60. Sir Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, commented: “There is clearly a mountain to climb. It takes a considerable amount of time to train medical students up. That we are already facing challenges in terms of recruitment shows that we have to take drastic action to fix the workforce crisis. Worryingly, there is a crisis in the here and now but also the big threat of this deteriorating in the future. I have written to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, asking him to lay out what steps he is taking to solve this workforce crisis. We need to be taking action now.”
Burnham Market Craft Fair
The Burnham Market Craft Fair (which is now its 44th year) will be held on Saturday 17th August 2019. This popular event, which is fundraising for the community, is entirely run by local volunteers. Funds are raised by stallholders contributing 10 per cent of their takings. Profits are donated to local charities and good causes. This year's craftspeople have been selected from nearly 200 applications and have been hand-picked for quality and variety. Traditional, local and regional crafts will be displayed alongside items by local artists, designers and artisans on over 100 stalls in the centre of the village, on the greens, from 10.00am to 5.00pm. Stalls include original art, jewellery, plants, textiles, ceramics, cards, woodwork, pottery, basketwork, sculpture, furniture, glassware, photography, aromatherapy, leather-craft, metalwork and more. There will be a traditional Hog Roast and a Punch and Judy Show will entertain children throughout the day. There are several refreshment stands, plus tea and cakes at St Mary’s Church, Westgate and of course, the permanent good eateries and specialist shops that make up this charming and attractive village. Ample parking is available in the new North Street car park, on the Creake Road Playing Field, or why not come into the village on the Coasthopper bus? "THUNDERBOLTS AND FIRE"
Sunday 4 AUGUST, 6.30pm St Nicholas Church, Wells-next-the-Sea was engulfed in flames on 3 August 1879, when a bolt of lightning struck the base of the tower east wall during a violent thunderstorm. To commemorate this momentous event there will be an evening of celebration of our Fire & Rescue Service, with BBQ, braziers and a light display from 6.30pm onwards. The St Nicholas Restoration Appeal will be officially launched with the unveiling of APPEAL THE TOTALIZER.
SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY
On July 8th, the Society met for an “in house” evening of displays. 4 members each volunteered to put together 40 sheets from their own collections and to show these to fellow members. Jane Purkiss started things off with pages illustrating the travels of James Cook, the 18th century explorer. Stamps and First Day Covers showed his ships, navigation instruments, places he discovered or called into en route for provisions, and portraits of Cook. Many countries, connected to his origin and travels, have produced philatelic items in his honour. Society secretary Jim Farrell came next, with a display of recent Irish issues, from 2012 to 2018. These included commemorative stamps of the sinking of the Titanic, of Bram Stoker, (the author of Dracula) and of the 1916 Irish Rebellion. We learned that definitive, self adhesive stamps are now produced on a roll and can be issued from a machine at any value from 1 cent up to 100Euros. Tony Taylor started the second half of the evening with material from his specialist subject, the Moroccon agencies. He has moved on from stamps and now studies postal rates, post marks, postal stationary and overprints such as can be found on postal stationary from Gibraltar. He also showed postal stationary from Moroccan hotels, each with their own cachet. The evening was completed with Gerry Smith’s collection of stamps, illustrating the evolution of various joint issues between the countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika (later to become Tanzania), Zambia and Zanzibar, as each became independent. From Australia to Ireland, via Morocco at the end of the 19th century and on to East Africa made for a most interesting evening! If you would like to join us, please get in touch with either Gerry 01263 579529 or Jim 01263 721043. We’ll be pleased to see you. email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Norfolk Life
by Richard Shepheard. Pies in Norfolk: the "Half-and-half" and the "Fifty-fifty".
Every Friday afternoon old Arthur used to trek over to Upper Ash Farm and do the garden for Delia Dumpton-Drewery. After he had worked his magic with spade and hoe Delia would give the horticultural veteran ten shillings, and, if there was anything to spare around the house, he might be the beneficiary of it. One Friday she said: "There's a pie here Arthur, it's been kicking around in the pantry for a couple of days, but I think you'll find it's alright." Away went Arthur with his ten bob note and the pie. On the following Friday, when he reappeared, Delia enquired: "How did you get on with that pie Arthur?" He scratched his head and responded: "That wooz sort a half-and half." "What ever do you mean by that?" said Delia. "Well," came the droll response: "If that'd been a little wass (worse) I corn't a ear't et, and if that'd been a little better I shoon't ha' got et!" ................................... Rabbits were plentiful up until the 1950's when myxomatosis took its dreadful toll. Old John preferred his in a pie and the local butcher made a speciality of them with eggs on the top. After 1953, John noticed a change in the flavour and asked Ernie, the butcher what had happened. Taking John to one side, Ernie explained that owing to the shortage of rabbits due to myxomatosis, he had had to augment the rabbit with a little horse meat. "Well, how ha' yow a bin a doin' on et?" said John. "About fifty fifty" came Ernie's reply. "Fifta-fifta! What do you mean-fifta fifta? demanded John. "Well thas's a cearse of one hoss and one rabbit." came the doleful return.

To remind you, a reflexmate is a selfmate (White forces Black to give mate) in which either side must mate on the move if he can. Solution to Solution to No. 264: (with white Qh3, no h2) 1.Be6+ Nxe6 2. Qh7+ Kf8 3. Rxf6+ and 3… Bxf6 4. Qf7 mate or 3… Ke7, Ke8 4. R (either)xe6+ wins. White was already the exchange up with a massive attack, but this is the least painful end for Black. Apologies for the misprint leaving, shall we say, the rather strong move 1. Qxd6. This one is cancelled (even though one or two solvers have spotted the error) and there will be another game position in due course. No. 265 is the second of four (planned) consecutive game-positions with a prize for the best set of solutions to at least 3 of them. Difficulty 4.

On July 10th, 2019, 1PM, Blakeney, Cley & District Royal British Legion hosted a successful trial launch of a Wheelyboat V20, a craft specifically designed with bow doors to make it wheelchair-accessible, from Morston Quay. The Wheelyboat, recently featured on the BBC’s Countryfile programme, opens up the water to wheelchair users and allows them to not only take trips and discover the joys of sailing, but to enable them to take powerboating courses as the boat can be helmed by a wheelchair user. Four wheelchair-bound residents from Halsey House, the Royal British Legion’s care home in Cromer were treated to a personal charter to see the seals at Blakeney Point and to successfully test the craft’s capabilities. Working in partnership with The Wheelyboat Trust, Blakeney, Cley & District Royal British Legion hope to raise funds to make a Wheelyboat available to Legion beneficiaries and others as part of their initiative to provide recuperative breaks using the local resources and working closely with activity providers in the north Norfolk coastal area as well as allowing people confined to wheelchairs to access seal trips, enjoy the pleasures of sailing in the area and take powerboating courses. Charly-Louise Hurst, Event Coordinator, said, “We’re really excited to have had a successful trial launch of this brilliant, innovative craft which makes such a difference to peoples’ lives; being able to board and helm a boat is something that many people cannot do and for us to be able to offer that to them is a real game-changer, particularly in and around Blakeney, which is such a beautiful area to spend time in and to make that accessible to more people by opening up the water to them is such a rewarding thing.”

Upper Sheringham Bells on their way to Dorset
We have had a very exciting week here on the North Norfolk Coast – many cars and villagers (and a group of children from the local primary school) were stopped in their tracks when they saw a sight many folk never see and certainly only once in a lifetime – the 6 bells from All Saints Church Upper Sheringham being loaded onto a lorry to start their journey to Nicholson Engineering in Bridport, Dorset. When they arrive at the bell works, they will have restoration work undertaken and a new frame and fixtures and fittings will be made ready for their return later in the year. We are immensely grateful to those who have supported this project either financially or with giving up their time and expertise. We have so far raised around £63,000 of the £80,000 required through a mixture of grants, fundraising events and personal donations. A big thank you to those who have already donated, we couldn’t do it without you. Please do consider helping us with this last push! We have a couple of fundraisers coming up – firstly, we are organising a fun variety show “Upper Sheringham’s Got Talent” (no judging, just for fun!) taking place in the Church on Saturday 7th September at 7pm. There will be a wide variety of acts including organists, handbells, singers, LEAMINGTON readings etc etc. Tickets are £12 in advance or £15 on the door (light HERE WE COME! refreshments will be served in the interval). Please do support us if you Congratulations to our new Norfolk bowling can! Tickets available from Sue Morton (01263 826078 or champions! Jennie Eldred, Sue Ealden, suejmorton@gmail.com) Kathleen Cottington and Gillian Pilgrim Secondly, we are organising a Grand Draw to be drawn at the end of the year. Tickets are £1 each or £5 for a book. First prize is Two National Trust triumphed in the Norfolk County’s “Senior 4’s” (over 55’s), final beating Swaffham Bowling Family Day Passes, second prize is a Round of Golf for 4 at Sheringham Golf Club and third prize is a Sandringham Teddy Bear. There Club by 18 shots to 12. They now go on to Leamington are many other prizes and experiences so why not try your luck! Contact Spa in August to compete Sue (details above) if you would like to buy some tickets or think you against the winners from could sell some for us. other Counties in the EBA’s If you would like to donate, please send a cheque (payable to Upper National Championships. Sheringham PCC) to Sue Morton, 4 Linden Grove, Sheringham, NR26 8PD. Alternatively, if you wish to donate electronically, go to Back home in Holt, the Club www.gofundme.com/upper-sheringham-bell-appeal. played host to a touring team from Upminster (of District Line fame). On a four day break in North Norfolk, the tourists had matches with three of our local clubs. The event was very traditional and busy - with no fewer than 56 bowlers on the Green, dressed in bowling “whites”. The home team won, but this was of no consequence on this most friendly social occasion.

North Norfolk District Council achieves trio of Green Flag Awards for green spaces
Holt Country Park, Pretty Corner Woods and Sadler’s Woods recognized again as among best open spaces in the UK. Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham, has re-joined Holt Country Park and Pretty Corner Woods in being recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world. Holt Country Park holds its position as a green space for the 14th year running and was joined by Pretty Corner Woods in 2013. Sadler’s Wood first received the accolade in 2012 and despite just missing out last year it has now re-claimed its place thanks to the hard work of our Countryside Team. The parks are among a record-breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces and 131 in thirteen other countries around the world that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space. Cllr. Virginia Gay, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Culture and Wellbeing, said: “We’re truly delighted to be receiving a Green Flag award for the 14th year in a row. It’s especially pleasing to hear the news about a Green Flag for Sadler’s Wood. Our woodlands and green spaces mean so much to everyone and these awards celebrate the dedication that goes into maintaining them to such a high standard.” International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners.” “Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.” The international award, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.
