Holidaymakers and locals turn out for the Annual Lifeboat Service
Family friendly cafe plans announced
A new family friendly cafe is set to open in Holt, offering cooking, music and gardening groups for young children, their families and the wider community. Norfolk County Council is working with The Treehouse Cafe, as part of the development of its new early childhood and family service. Run by a community interest company, the cafe will operate from the current children’s centre building, when the new early childhood and family service launches in October. The eco-friendly cafe will include a community fridge where people can help themselves to food donated from local supermarkets and businesses that would otherwise end up in landfill, and a zero-waste shop. The cafe is planning on running a community allotment where food grown can be used in the cafe, a wild area where a meadow will grow for wildlife, and a peaceful place for people to picnic and for children to play. Cllr John Fisher, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services Committee at Norfolk County Council, said: “Our new early childhood and family services will get help to more of the families that need it. At the same time, we want to support communities to develop activities and support locally and that’s exactly what the Treehouse Café is proposing.” The Treehouse Cafe is also looking to introduce a range of groups and workshops including a Breastfeeding Cafe, gardening and cooking clubs, weigh and stay, speech and language support sessions with ‘raising little voices’ music groups run by Music For Families, a local charitable organisation and ‘babble and bond’ a playful group for parents with young babies discovering how chatting with their babies helps their language development. It also proposing a child and adult carers' cafe. Rachel Forsyth and Lorna Berry, Directors of The Treehouse Café, said: “The Treehouse Cafe will be a home from home, a place where everyone is welcome and can enjoy a cuppa without being rushed. The outside space will be as important as our indoor area where people can join us in building a community garden or, just enjoy the beautiful space.”
The showery weather kept the numbers down at this year’s 59th Annual Lifeboat Service (Sunday, 11 August) on the quay at Wells, although the showers relented for the service. An estimated 300 people attended; normally there are over a thousand. A two-minute silence was held before the service began in memory of Jean Court who recently passed away. Jean was a founder member of the Guild, which was started fifty years ago, and had been its Chair for many years. Jean’s partner, former Coxswain David Cox, instigated The Annual Lifeboat service fifty-nine years ago in 1960. The 93 year old was aboard the lifeboat, and has been to all the lifeboat services since. The lifeboat chaplain, the Reverend Neil Woodruff, led the service and the Minister of Wells Methodist Church, the Reverend Clifford Shanganya, gave the address from on board the all-weather lifeboat Doris M Mann of Ampthill. In his address he said he had grown to love the sea, even though he had been brought up inland, and had come to respect it. The theme of his sermon was; even when in danger “Don’t panic”, as the disciples did when caught in a storm on The Sea of Galilee and Jesus calmed the sea. He said, “Don’t panic, Jesus is in control” Coxswain Nicky King read the fishermen’s version of the 23rd Psalm and Deputy Second Coxswain Martin Emerson and Crewmember Jim Heasman read the lessons. The traditional seafarers’ hymns were accompanied by the Fakenham Town Band and led by the Churches Together choir. The crew of the inshore lifeboat and Guild members took the collection which came to £1135.00 and will go to lifeboat funds. Then the Mersey Class all-weather lifeboat did a circuit of the harbour sounding her siren and boats, moored on the quay and in the harbour, responded as the lifeboat returned to the boathouse.

Seaweed Farm Proposal: The marine licence consultation regarding a seaweed farm application is now open to public comment. The application proposes a seaweed farm to be located approx. 5 miles off the coast at Wells. Amnesty Waste Days: Amnesty days are a series of free events where householders can dispose of their left-over household chemicals and paint etc. Wood preservatives, insect and weed killers, paint, thinners, varnishes and special cleaning products are among the wide range of household chemicals which will be accepted. These are products that can be too dangerous to be tipped down drains or sent for disposal with ordinary household waste without causing environmental damage. In addition, we are hoping to collect reusable paint at all of the sites but this is still under discussion. Open days in our area are 9-5 at Hempton 6, 7 & 9 September (extra day because of last year’s congestion) and Dereham 28 & 29 September.

Harkness prescribes birdwatching for mental health
The mental health benefits of birdwatching in nature is the topic of conversation when Bird Therapy author, Joe Harkness joins NWT Wildlife Evangelist, Nick Acheson for an evening talk and supper on 29 August at NWT Cley and Salthouse Marshes. It is the sensory elements of birdwatching that are therapeutic, Harkness claims, and he is to speak further about this at Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre later this month. He will also be giving practical advice on how to reap the full mental benefits of natural encounters, from what to listen for, to making the most of seasonal changes. Harkness says: “Nature is the ultimate distraction therapy, providing a platform and safety net for everyday issues to be cast aside, offering time for one to reflect and recollect. Bird songs and calls provide sonic stimulation and none more so than nature’s finest songster, the nightingale. After horrendously stressful days at work I’ve gone to a local site for them and switched off, by allowing their bubbly song to wrap me up and absorb my anxieties.”
This event is the second in a series of talks from authors/naturalists in conversation with Nick Acheson to be held at NWT Cley Marshes, and part of a wider range of evening talks at the centre. All talks include supper, served at 7pm, and talks begin at 7.45pm. The cost is £10 for NWT members or £12 for non-members. Booking via www.wegottickets.com or ringing the visitor centre on 01263 740008. email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk
NCC Trading Standards Warning: Get rid of this scam – the latest scam brought to my attention is an email claiming your tv licence is about to expire. Please warn friends and family who may be worried DO NOT CLICK THE LINK – it is just an attempt to get your bank details. If you receive the email you can report the scam to Scams Action by calling 0300 330 3003. Reduce Period Poverty – and get rid of one more item: NCC and other local councils are seeking to reduce period poverty and end unnecessary embarrassment by providing sanitary items at county venues such as libraries. There is much more to this project but for now I want to make you aware of an invidious matter – VAT is charged on sanitary items. So, females including young girls and women with low income pay VAT on top of the cost of items about which they have no choice. Few will have seen me angry but if I meet those who voted for this unbelievable and unacceptable imposition they will do so. You would be further shocked if you read the list of items regarding which there is no VAT. Whenever and whatever happens regarding Europe this inexcusable tax must be thrown out. Upwards and onwards

News from The Holt Community Centre
What a great town we live in! I am constantly blown away at the spirit of cooperation and support there is in Holt, and very grateful for it on behalf of the Community Centre in the season that we are in. We rely heavily on volunteer support to make a lot of the work in the Centre happen, and every week we are steadily building up a larger team of people to enable the Centre and its activities run smoothly. Our regular fundraising events calendar is getting busier every month, with fun activities such as BINGO Night firmly established and popular, and with every event planned and run almost exclusively by volunteers, that’s a lot of people needed! We really want to see the Community Centre utilised by the town on a daily basis, with fun and diverse activities for all, and this can only be achieved with a collective effort. There are so many ways to get involved at the Centre, so if you fancy seeing what’s going on and finding out if there’s a role for you please come and see us and have a chat; we are open every day from 10am. The Forties Weekend is nearly upon us, and as ever we will be hosting a number of activities in the Centre such as a tea dance, Memory Concert and a special showing of The Battle of Britain Film, as well as being involved in the Town activities on the High Street this year. Look out for our Taste of the Forties Stall, selling delicious home-made cakes, savouries and bakes, as well as fresh soups and rolls, the ubiquitous spam sandwiches and tea and coffee, all at very reasonable prices. Come and have an authentic taste of the decade! Our volunteers also help to man the Charity Car Parks, so if you would like to help us raise money in this way please call in at the centre to add your name to the rotas. It’s a very special year for us as the Community Centre has been nominated as the main Charity which we are so thrilled about, so please do support us in our fundraising efforts by coming and enjoying the event. Our programme of redecoration also continues apace, with our volunteers picking up brushes and attacking the Centre with gusto, transforming it into a beautiful bright new space. The flooring has now been laid in our ArtSpaces Studios thanks to Bespoke Flooring of Holt, and we hope to complete the work in there by the end of the month ready for our artists to move in, which is hugely exciting. With smart new tables replacing our old and worn wooden ones, thanks to the generosity of the Holt Community Café and Little Star Group who between them donated 50% of the cost, we are looking like a totally different venue. Please do come and see it, you will be most welcome! For information about events, regular groups or to volunteer please call 01263 713427 or email holtcommunitycentre@gmail.com. Norman Lamb Cannabis Debate
Bus Shelter
Dear Jo, Sir Norman Lamb MP was commended for backing our national health service, especially in treating mental health. This has been particularly important for constituents with personal and/or professional experience of psychosis. But his support for legalising accessibility to "recreational" Tetrahydrocannibol is therefore troubling, because its link with mental illness, plus other medical and social harms, has been known for 20 years (e.g. David Copestake's Cannabis and Mental Function), and much more evidence has recently accumulated, albeit buried under addict clamour and commercial propaganda (cf. Carolanne Wright, "Monsanto, Big Pharma...Cannabis" online). Readers should also Google entries under "Cannabis Norfolk" and "GW Cannabis Norfolk". As a leading advocate of being "open and inclusive" towards world immigration, does Sir Norman possibly also think the experience of Vietnamese and other newcomers in growing and/or marketing "Wacky Backy" might improve the prospect of success? David Ashton
Dear Jo, Why was a bus shelter put up in coronation road? As there are no buses that go down there. The buses go down Edinburgh Road and Charles Road to Hempstead Road. Mrs J Wood.
Norwich Helter Skelter
Dear Jo, I was pleased to hear someone else stand out in protest against the helter skelter at Norwich Cathedral. I feel Christ would have walked in the fairgrounds amongst the people but I don’t think He would have turned his Father’s House into a fairground ride! God made daisy-covered hills for His little ones to roll down, not plastic slides. These helter skelters etc are made in energy consuming factories, built on grass covering concrete! His grass! His natural world! Why are His children no longer content with nature’s play things, her meadows, her flowers, her woods, her streams? Climbing trees, fishing, swimming? Little ones can’t even gather posies of snowdrops and primroses, bluebells and wild daffodils as their great grandparents did and where can they wander, ‘lonely as a cloud’ to dream their happy dreams and – see their god?! Sincerely, Jenny Whybrow
Thank You
Dear Jo, Grateful thanks to whoever found my wristwatch in Budgens' car park on Wednesday 7th August and handed it in to the staff. It wasn't very valuable, but it was so inconvenient being without it. Now repaired and all well. Thank you - thank you. Sylvia Levete

Holt Consulting Rooms
Open Day Success On Saturday 10th August, Holt Consulting Rooms had another very successful open day. We opened our doors at 10am and the public started arriving to attend a full programme of demonstrations and talks throughout the day. We started with a demonstration of Connect Therapy from physiotherapist Thea Horner. She had a willing volunteer to undergo a full biomechanical assessment, the result of which was that his neck and ankle pains were coming from an area of his thoracic spine. He will follow up with treatment to teach him how to maintain an improved way of moving. Then Sally Storr, counsellor, gave a 15-minute introduction to mindfulness for relaxation. This was repeated later in the day - and there were a lot of very chilled people after that. Not least the volunteer who experienced a facial involving facial reflexology from reflexologist Anna Little. A little touch of luxury. Clinical Psychologist, Dr Hanne Homer, gave a very interesting introduction to CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), followed by a talk on CBT Hypnotherapy to ‘transform your life’ from Guy Thorold, hypnotherapist. And finally, a couple of brave volunteers had some acupuncture with Richard Lamb – and discovered that they hadn’t needed to be brave at all! Nutritionist Pamela Taylor was available throughout the day, to talk to people about various nutritional issues. She also brought some samples of healthy but delicious chocolate chip cookies (-they didn’t taste healthy at all!), with recipes available too. Other people enjoyed taster sessions of massage and reflexology and were able to ask questions of all our practitioners. We would like to thank all those involved, and those who attended the event. It feels very worthwhile when visitors comment on how interesting and professional they have found us, and how friendly the welcome was. By Thea Horner email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Fakenham Student Raising Money for MIND
Tom Savory grew up in North Norfolk on a farm near Fakenham. He is leading a group of 47 Bangor University students up Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to summit the world tallest freestanding Tom trekking in Nepal mountain in aid of MIND mental health charity. As a group they aim to raise over £100,000 in the coming weeks. They will be leaving to trek Kili on the 3rd of September and the trek takes 6 days. The team is based in Bangor University in North Wales which is where they are doing most of their fundraising and training for the trek. Each member has their own fundraising target which they are working towards through bucket collecting, bag packs, sponsorship, running events and online donations on social media. Tom did a bucket collection in Holt over Christmas (29/12/18) and raised £173.52 for which he would like to thank the people of Holt for through this article. To read more about Tom’s story and to donate to this worthy cause, see Tom’s JustGiving page at: https://www.justgiving.com/companyteams/bangorkili2019

A Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable
Time to Stare and Share. Part 2 by Leslie Kinsley I don’t remember my parents ever going anywhere on trips when I was small, though they did have one outing which I will tell you about later. I however was lucky because my best friend was John Fisher and his parents had a shop and a car. The Fishers were very good to me and when they took John to camp in Abraham’s Bosom in Wells, I went with them. They packed their Austin with a very basic tent which blew down when we had some wind and rain. At least it wasn’t far to come home that time! The best bit about those camps was the chances we had to try sea food. John and I had sticks with a meat skewer on the end. We paddled about in the muddy water till we felt the tickle of a flat fish which we then stabbed and caught. We also picked cockles and clams in Wells harbour which were cooked on a primus stove back at the tent. One time we were out looking for clams with John’s Dad and Mr Beresford and his boys when we got caught by the tide. It was very frightening as Mr Fisher and Mr Beresford held us boys up to stop us drowning. Of course we could not swim. We were so lucky though, as the fishing boats were going with the tide and they came to our rescue. We did have a sort of cinema at the Oddfellows Hall in Briston. It cost sixpence (two and a half pence) for the front seats and one shilling and sixpence (seven and a half pence) for the back seats. Charlie Bligh and Mr Parker were the projectionists and the film often used to break in those days. When this happened, Charlie used to swear very loudly, so we all learned lots of new words. I remember the cowboy films best, and how we all used to groan when the dull films about things like town histories were shown. There were better films shown at the cinema in Holt on Peacock Lane. I would cycle there and pay sixpence to the chap who lived next door to the cinema so that he would mind my bike. Later, when I was earning, I went on the train. By 1953, I had taken my test and managed to buy a car. I took Elsie and my nephew Tony to the cinema in Holt on the night of the floods. The manager stopped the film and came out in front of the screen. He told us of the terrible storm and advised people from the coast to go home and rescue their families and possessions. We left for home too and had to go home by Thornage instead of Hunworth because a straw stack had blown down and blocked the road.
NORFOLK FACTS
Norfolk has 659 medieval churches, the highest concentration in the world! Howard Carter the archaeologist who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen grew up in Swaffham. Norwich City Football club's song, “On The Ball City is the oldest football chant still being sung in the UK today. The Domesday Book shows that during the 11th century, Norfolk was one of the most heavily populated counties. This remained the case until 1600.

FROM THE RECTORY
Dear Friends, Parish ministry, like life, brings people’s needs into sharp focus. As well as joy and happiness I am made aware each week of the loneliness, illness, sadness, pain, grief, depression, and great need of many. Sometimes the need seems overwhelming and when faced with such need it is hard to understand why people should have to endure the pain, sorrow, sadness and grief of personal suffering. Sometimes nothing I can say can begin to adequately answer the questions and anger that arise with regard to suffering. Indeed a question any parish priest must ask themselves when faced with the deep, deep pastoral need of their parishioners and human suffering is; where is the God of consolation, comfort and love? Yet without wanting to in anyway minimise the extent of human suffering and its effect, we have to hold fast to a faith and hope that we can find the comfort and consolation of God even in the darkest of places and the most difficult of times. We can find in the care, concern, support, encouragement, compassion and love of others. Of course it is true that we do not know what is to be bereaved until we experience it for ourselves, or to suffer pain until we know it for ourselves. We cannot fully understand what an individual is really feeling but perhaps having experienced it for ourselves gives us a greater empathy and understanding. Seeking to share in another person’s pain and suffering, standing alongside them in a time of trial, striving after justice, or seeking to meet a need makes know the comfort and consolation of God who suffers with us and for us in Christ Jesus on the cross. And so we are also encouraged to draw near to the cross of Christ, the means of God’s grace, that we might find in our Lord’s own suffering comfort and strength to face our own. Some of the greatest Christian mystics, including Mother Julian of Norwich actually sought to experience suffering in order that she might share in Christ’s own suffering and come to understand more deeply the depth of His love for her. Knowing they share in some spiritual way in Christ’s suffering, some people are enabled to share in his comfort too. Knowing that Christ has won the victory over sin, suffering and death, affords us the hope of comfort and consolation. Every week in the words of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer Holy Communion service which we still use for our 8am Sunday morning service in Holt we read, “Hear what comfortable words our saviour Christ sayeth, to all that truly turn to him. Come unto me all the travail and be heavy laden, and I shall refresh you. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, to the end that all that believe in him, should not perish, but have life everlasting.” Through the suffering and pain of Christ on the cross, in Word, in Sacrament, in prayer, in the intercession of one another and the communion of saints, in worship and in the love and compassion of others, the God of all consolation and comfort is forever present, with us always in our midst. While it does not answer the question of why, it gives me and no doubt others the strength and consolation to cope. Every blessing, Fr. Howard

A walk in Wells footsteps takes funky shoe sculptures to new elevations
Shoes tell a story. Everyone’s shoes are completely different – the colours, the styles, the shapes – but everyone’s shoes are part of them and reflect personality. The town of Wells-next-the-Sea is at it again with this summers’ artfully created shoe sculptures dotted around town. There was fantastic turn-out for the launch of this years’ trail at Wells Maltings on 12th August, 2019 which runs through to end of September. The shoes bring to life 15 historically significant houses and the project involved a cast of 100’s. We hope to reach 1,000’s of locals and visitors over the next two months. Trail design and implementation involved all 233 Wells Primary students, teaching staff, aids, administration, art volunteers, and Wells Men’s Shed. The shoes have already become a lively talking point with proud parents, grandparents, carers, friends and other family members plus local visitors coming along to walk the trail. Once the shoes were installed by Wells Men’s shed curiosity about them began to build. Onlookers said, “They look great!” Over the course of the week of install, immediate response has been one of interest and positivity. When the shoes were picked up from the school a few of the teachers and reception said, ‘Banksy, eat your heart out!’ The children have much to be proud of and it was a fun way to Call for donations for vulnerable Syrian refugees teach them about local heritage. Doctors’ Advice
Morris, an 82-year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm. A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, 'You're really doing great, aren't you?' Morris replied, 'Just doing what you said, Doc: 'Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.'' WEYBOURNE WI – SAVED BY THE BELLS!
On Wednesday afternoon, 7th August, members and friends of Weybourne WI met at the village hall anticipating a talk by a representative from Keys Auctioneers. Unfortunately, our speaker had to cancel, so at very short notice Sue Morton stepped in to talk about her involvement in the appeal to raise funds for the repair of the bells at Upper Sheringham church. Sue spoke passionately about her love of bell ringing and how she began when she was aged 9. She told us how she came from a bell ringing family. She even met her husband through bell ringing. Sue and her husband lived for 30 years in Bushey and she was proud to have been the only female Tower Captain there. During her time in Bushey, Sue was involved in a project to raise £100,000 to replace the church bells. When she and her husband retired to Norfolk, four years ago, she thought her fund raising days were over. However, she was made Tower Captain at Holt and then became involved with Upper Sheringham Church and before too long a new fund raising appeal had begun to repair the six bells there. Sue was daunted by the prospect at first, but she is motivated by determined and inspirational women, so this has
helped her to persevere. The total amount required for the project has not quite been raised yet, but the bells are currently being repaired in Dorset and it is hoped they will be returned in time to peal for Remembrance Day. For further details and information about the project contact: suejmorton@gmail.com A vote of thanks was given by Kath Griffiths. The afternoon concluded with a delicious strawberry cream tea, during which the raffle was drawn and competition results were announced.

Holt & District Flower Club
Holt and District Probus Club
Barbara Collins from Peterborough demonstrated at our meeting on Monday 5th August with her very apt title ‘Amazing August’. Her arrangements really did depict all things August! We had a summer garden, a seaside container along with rope and driftwood, a rustic allotment type arrangement which even contained fresh chantenay carrots, a basket of garden flowers, a very modern design which was foam free using a screen and decorated test tubes of flowers and to finish a bamboo pot of vibrant coloured flowers which brought to mind exotic holidays! A vote of thanks was given by Jackie Aldous. #The monthly competition was a petite arrangement entitled ‘The Diamond Anniversary’ to reflect NAFAS celebrating its 60th anniversary this month. The winner was Bev Hartshorn. Our next club meeting will be on Monday 2nd September when we will have a floral art demonstration by Brenda Tubb from Great Ellingham. Visitors are always welcome £6.50 Club Meetings £15.00 Open Meetings.
HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUB VISITS RAVENINGHAM HALL GARDENS
The High Kelling Garden Club was fortunate with the weather for their recent coach trip to the gardens at Raveningham Hall, close to Beccles. Thirty of the club's members made the trip and all agreed it had been a very special day. The Raveningham Estate was acquired by the Bacon family in 1735 and the present owner, Sir Nicholas Bacon, came into the tearoom to welcome our members. Garden Club chairman Valerie Ross had made the arrangements for the day, liaising with Sir Nicholas's personal assistant Sonia Roebuck, who told us in some detail about the history of Raveningham and indicated areas of special interest. The gardens, which cover 10 acres, were much improved by Lady Priscilla Bacon, who brought the walled kitchen garden back to working order, once again producing vegetables, salads and fruit for the house. There is a profusion of flowers all around the house and the gardens, with snowdrops, spring bulbs and roses early in the year. At present there is a wonderful collection of very tall agapanthus, both blue and white, and members could buy whichever ones they wanted to take home. Halfway through our visit all our members went back to the tearoom to sit down together for an excellent lunch. Some members had walked alongside the large lake to see the arboretum, close to which there is a stumpery with tree ferns. Other members went to visit the estate church of St Andrew, which dates from about 1350.

Holt and District Probus Club met at The Feathers in Holt in early August and after the usual (excellent) meal settled down to listen to their speaker. Unfortunately, the arranged speaker had to call off, and on short notice member John Evans stepped in and related a very sad occurrence from October 1942. The 80,000-ton liner Queen Mary, converted to a troop carrier, was ferrying about 10,000 US military personnel to the UK and was under strict orders not to stop, due to risk of U-boat attack. She was accompanied by the 4,000-ton anti-aircraft escort, the Cruiser HMS Curacoa, which was also carrying over 400 personnel. The Queen Mary was steering a zig-zag course, designed to make it difficult for U-boats and the Curacoa was having to make some speed to catch up with her. Due to some confusion about rights of way, a collision between the 2 vessels occurred and the Curacoa was sliced in two, part sinking at once and the remaining part soon afterwards. By breaking radio silence, the Queen Mary was able to direct to the scene destroyers that rescued the 101 survivors, while 338 officers and men lost their lives. Later in the war Queen Mary carried 16,000 men during one Atlantic crossing which has to be a record for a single vessel. After her retirement she ended up in Longbeach in California as a floating hotel and museum. A vote of thanks was given by Terry Sands. Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782. Refer also to https://holtprobusclub.wordpress.com

Can anyone help our small club please? The North Norfolk Model Engineering Club has been active since 1992. We are a broad range of Model Engineers who build all sorts of models and currently have a miniature railway at Holt station for steam and battery operated locomotives. Having been on the site of the North Norfolk Railway for almost 16 years our lease will come to an end early next year due to the NNR wanting to develop its site and extend its museum facilities. Andrew Munden, General Manager of the North Norfolk Railway said that “We will be very sorry to see the North Norfolk Model Engineering Club leave the station site after all these years, but the long awaited development of the Holt site will soon be underway and this will occupy the site currently used by the miniature railway, that provides rides to our visitors during the summer months. The North Norfolk Railway hopes the club will be able to secure new premises that will enable them to remain in the local area to the benefit of all visitors and the town.” We are looking for a parcel of land about 1.5 to 2 acres, fairly flat that we could fit our operation into, that may be available to rent. If anyone has land available we would be pleased to hear from you; E mail us at northnorfolkmodelengineeringcl@gmail.com or contact us through our Facebook page North Norfolk Model Engineering Club. We are running for public rides during the summer holidays on Sunday and Thursday afternoons and at the 1940’s event on 14th/15th Sept. So look forward to seeing you soon.

Saturday October the 12th from 10.00am – 4.00 pm at HOLT COMMUNITY CENTRE A ‘become involved’ and ‘welcome to Holt’ event for residents and those who want to know what happens in the town. Ever wanted to know what organisations and clubs are in your town but are either too hesitant to ask or don’t know where to find out? UCAN (United Community Arts Network), a new umbrella committee growing out of the Holt Fringe Festival Committee and closely linked with LOVE HOLT, is offering a solution. UCAN is about sharing ideas, supporting each other and providing and promoting opportunities, activities and events throughout the year, across organisations and venues (trying to avoid duplication and clashes) and building on each other’s work, experience and success. Along with ‘LOVE HOLT’ UCAN is about pulling-together, talking-up the town, and helping to promote its clubs, organisations, charities and businesses to residents as well as visitors. With this in mind, we believe an annual or bi-annual welcome to Holt event or ‘TOWN FAYRE’ is in everybody’s interest, recognising the difficulty that many of us have in plucking-up the courage and confidence to approach a society or organisation or cross the threshold of a forbidding-looking building to find out what they do. With this proposed event we hope that every club, society, charity and organisation, (even businesses, where relevant), will be present to either showcase their work and what they have to offer or just their presence in the town. We are part of the exciting new initiative that is LOVE HOLT and are registered on its website. We recommend that you are signed-up there also to receive regular updates about events in town and perks offered by and for its members. The Fayre will take place on Saturday the 12th of October from 10.00am – 4.00 pm at Holt Community Centre. Here you can meet and talk to people, pick-up a leaflet or information, even join up or at least register your interest. In conjunction with Love Holt and Holt Town Council Rodney Smith, the new Town Mayor, is kindly opening and launching this new initiative. So, we very much hope you will support it by coming along to Holt Community Centre at 10.00am on Saturday the 12th of October. Phil Barrett (UCAN Chair)

Griddled peaches and Binham Blue
One of the most beautiful features of the Grove is the peach tree by the old red brick wall housing No6 and the downstairs cloakroom. The tree itself is, in a way, a piece of Cromer history; it was given to John and Ann Graveling by Peter and Betty Coman, patrons of the legendary Captain’s Table fish and chip shop (now the Masala Twist) and the Blue Danube, which was behind the church. John and Peter’s parents were dear friends and their sons – and now grandchildren – are also very close, and every year the tree gives out fruit which are just as delicious and sweet as the afternoon teas on the lawns it looks out over. Of course the chefs are less interested in the tree’s history and more in the produce, and they have come up with this wonderful recipe to make the most of the peach harvest every year. Please do come up and visit us for afternoon tea (or alfresco dining of course!) and admire the tree in all its glory.

Ingredients 4 ripe peaches, stoned and quartered 4 tbsp olive oil 100g rocket (out of the garden if possible) 100g Binham Blue cheese, crumbled 85g prosciutto 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar Method Brush the peach quarters with 2 tbsp of the olive oil and grind over a little black pepper. Heat a griddle pan until really hot, add the peaches, cooking for 2-3 mins on each cut side until caramelised. Set aside. Toss the rocket in 1 tbsp of the olive oil, pile up with the cheese and prosciutto on four plates and top with the peach quarters. Whisk together the remaining oil and the vinegar, spoon over the salad and serve.

SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY
The Society’s annual, in-house auction took place at the August 12th meeting. 111 lots went under the hammer, ranging in value from £1 to £40, and including stamps, covers and postal history from all over the world. Many bargains were had, but there was strong competition for some lots, with one lot (a 3d Wilding, mint, tete-beche pair) going for 9 times its reserve price! The next meeting, on September 9th, will be a presentation by Peter Boyce on Malta. The Heraldic Emblem.
Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard
When I returned to Norfolk more than forty years ago there were three pubs which bore the title of The Ostrich. These were at Castle Acre, Weasenham, and South Creake. I used them all but knew the one at South Creake the best and it was there that I learned that the Ostrich is the heraldic emblem of the Cokes of Holkham. Sadly, my old haunt changed its name to The Plume of Feathers and is now shut and in danger of being converted into dwellings. I say sadly because four centuries of Norfolk history are embodied in the inn sign of the Ostrich and began at Mileham in Norfolk. It was there that Sir Edward Coke (1552-1634) was born. He was educated at Norwich Grammar School and went on to become the greatest jurist of the era. Sir Edward became Attorney General to Elizabeth I and Lord Chief Justice in the reign of James I and is best remembered for prosecuting Sir Walter Raleigh and Guy Fawkes. Even King James is reputed to have confessed to being in awe of him. His offices made him immensely wealthy and he had vast estates. On this his descendants became one of the greatest families of their eras. We remember Thomas Coke, Ist Earl of Leicester of the first creation, who built Holkham Hall over a thirty-four-year period from 1734-68. And we remember Thomas William Coke, his great nephew (1754 - 1842) who became 1st Earl of Leicester of the 2nd creation, an eminent Whig politician and a great agriculturalist known as Coke of Norfolk. But why was the heraldic emblem of the ostrich given to their great forebear, Sir Edward Coke? It had been lost sight of till the late Edward Douglas Coke, 7th Earl of Leicester, researched it. It was then established that the ostrich was afforded to the great jurist because he could digest any legal matter, however complex, in the same way as an ostrich can digest the most formidable of substances. And if you're ever able to see the inn sign, you'll notice that the ostrich has in its bill a horseshoe.

Norfolk Nurses to take on coastal trek to help air ambulance save lives next month
There’s just one month to go until the East Anglian Air Ambulance’s flagship Trek 24 event. On Sunday 8 September hundreds of hardy walkers will take on either a 24 mile or 24-kilometre coastal walk along the North Norfolk Coast in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA), with both routes finishing at Holkham Hall. The ‘Four for 24’ group is made up of four Norfolk nurses who have all had experience working at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital: Natasha Pickett, Clare Johnson, Louise Langham-Hill and Bev Macfarlane. This team know first-hand how important the air ambulance is in getting seriously ill or injured patients to them as quickly as possible and are taking on the 24 kilometre walking challenge to support the charity’s mission to expand their service to fly 24 hours a day. Bev MacFarlane, ex ED nurse at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and current nurse at Cromer Hospital, said: “Supporting EAAA is very close to our hearts. All of us are ED nurses or ex-ED nurses so we have seen first-hand the benefit EAAA gives to patients who have suffered a life-threatening incident or medical emergency. Personally, my husband was knocked off his bicycle in an accident and taken to Addenbrooke’s by EAAA, so I am proud to take part in Trek 24 and do my part to raise funds for this vital charity”. Trek 24 is a brand new fundraising event which has been created as part of the charity’s fundraising drive for EAAA’s Mission 24/7 – to fly their Anglia One helicopter from Norwich 24 hours a day. So far over 200 people are signed up to take part, and tickets for the event can still be purchased until 31 August. Currently the helicopter flies from Norwich between 7am and 7pm. The charity’s expert doctors and paramedics already work 24/7, with the night shift provided via rapid response vehicle. By flying 24/7, the charity estimate they will be able to attend up to 600 more missions a year then they currently do, flying all over East Anglia, not just in Norfolk. To do this, EAAA need to raise an additional £1 million a year – on top of the £12 million they already need to keep their helicopters flying and saving lives – and aim to be operational 24/7 by helicopter in 2020 - becoming the first air ambulance charity in the East of England to do so. Leanne Kershaw, EAAA Events Fundraiser, said: “It’s vitally important to have a night-time helicopter service in the area, especially in rural Norfolk where it can take so long to get around by car. We’ve designed this event to support our mission 24/7 and have been really impressed with the number of people who have already signed up to take part and will be supporting us next month. “Seeing teams like these lovely ladies entering is really special and we can’t wait to see a sea of blue EAAA supporters taking over the North Norfolk coastline next month. We hope that passers-by on the day will help to cheer these amazing walkers on!”. For more information, go to www.eaaa.org.uk

Hazardous waste events across Norfolk in September and October
For the sixteenth year running, Norfolk's residents can get rid of unwanted household chemicals, safely and securely, at a series of household hazardous waste events at seven of Norfolk County Council's recycling centres this September and October. Waste is hazardous if it can cause harm to humans or the environment. This type of waste is not normally accepted at recycling centres as it needs to be dealt with by specialist waste disposal contractors. The annual events give people an opportunity to safely dispose of their hazardous waste such as wood preservatives, insecticides, weed killers, paint, thinners, varnishes and special cleaning products. Cllr Andy Grant, Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member for Environment & Waste, said: “We all need to dispose of hazardous waste very carefully so this is why we offer these free events across the county each year to help people get rid of a range of hazardous items safely and responsibly.” “Leftover paint is the number one item brought to our annual events. But I’d always urge people to save a car journey by following one of our top tips – firstly to plan any DIY job very carefully to cut the amount of paint left over. And if you can’t use up that little bit of leftover paint, or give it away, remember to dry it out and you can then put the tin in your kerbside rubbish bin.” Janice Coglin-Hibbert, Waste Reduction Officer at Norfolk County Council, said: “These are very popular events so you are likely to find queues to enter the recycling centre, especially up until lunchtime. The sites are open until 5pm in September and 4pm in October so please come later in the day if possible.” To help with this identification and sorting people are urged to: • Keep containers clearly labelled where possible • Keep all products in their original containers and not mix them together • Make sure that the products are properly sealed to avoid leakage To find out more about the events including what can and can’t be taken along, visit: www.norfolk.gov.uk/hazardouswaste

Better Broadband programme goals are realised
ÂŁ1,000,000 investment improves connectivity Residents now enjoy the benefit of increased coverage of high speed broadband since North Norfolk District Council’s ÂŁ1,000,000 commitment to the Better Broadband initiative in 2012. In co-ordination with Norfolk County Council and other District councils a collective ÂŁ15million was invested into increasing the coverage of high speed broadband across the county. The current fund included a ÂŁ5.3million take-up rebate from the first Better Broadband contract in 2012 which was allocated to the District Councils that invested, which in effect created an additional ÂŁ1.50 for every ÂŁ1 invested by North Norfolk District Council. At the time of inception, only 11% of North Norfolk properties had access to speeds of 15Mbps and by the end of 2015 that number had increased to 74%. By the completion of this rollout at the end March 2020, coverage in North Norfolk is expected to have risen to 92%. This has already been surpassed, as of the end June 2019 coverage had reached 95%. Cllr Eric Seward, Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Portfolio Holder for Finance, said: “I am delighted that the Council’s significant contribution to the programme is leading to much improved broadband connectivity in North Norfolk. This is important to the local economy as it will provide a resource for businesses and make information and shopping online more accessible to residents. It also places North Norfolk in good stead in keeping face with the broadband revolution.â€? The Better Broadband for Norfolk (BBfN) programme aims to make Norfolk an even more attractive place to live and work, by making high speed connection as widely available as possible. This increases learning opportunities, reduces social isolation and enables people to work, shop and bank from home. The Holt Chronicle Issue 432 23rd August 2019

God and the devil were having an argument, and Satan proposed a football game between heaven and hell to resolve the dispute. God, in his eternal goodness, pointed out that it wouldn’t be a fair match because all the ‘good’ players go to heaven. The devil smiled, replying, “Yes, but we’ve got all the refs.”

CHESS PROBLEMS by Dr Cedric Lytton
266. R. Byrne – R.J. Fischer USA Ch., New York 1963
267. P. Leko – S. Lomasov, Nutcracker Tourmt, Moscow 2018
266. Black to play and win
267. White to play and win
Solution to No. 266: 1… Qh3+ 2. Kg1 Re1+ 3. Rxe1 Bxd4 4. Qxd4 Qg2 mate. 4. Bxf2+ is hopeless anyway. Amusing that the white Rd1 obstructs his mate on a1 at move 3, a theme that problemists will recognise as the Holtzhausen theme. No. 267 was a rapid-play finish in the Scheveningen-format Nutcracker tournament where four grandmasters (the “Kings”) took on four rising stars (the “princes”), each team member playing all the opposing team members in four rounds of classical and rapid-play. Here it is mate (in seven moves) or loss of the black Q. Difficulty 5.

Broadland Chess Club
Welcome to the latest Broadland Chess Club newsletter. As usual the club has been on its hols throughout the summer months, so all of the members have been away recharging their batteries ready for the new season. However, a couple of our members are always up for a challenge and decided to take chess out into the community where they were prepared to take on anyone who fancied their chances against them. A brave move (see what I did there) as they had no idea who was going to turn up and take them on! Vicars and children accepted the challenge, some had dabbled before, others were first timers but overall I think everyone enjoyed themselves as part of Sprowston ‘s Great Get-together. In June BCC played host to a team representing the Board Games Group from The Forum. The match was played at rapidplay, with each player having 25 minutes on their clock and gaining an extra 10 second increment with each move. The match was played in a good spirit and was enjoyed by all of the players. The final score was 5 – 5, hence, an honourable draw. So, here is the important information that you all need. During the summer the club has been undergoing some reorganisation. From September the junior club will meet at Vera’s Coffee Shop, Wayford Nurseries, NR12 9LJ on Mondays from 6.15 to 7.45. The first meeting of the new season will be on 2nd September. After all the successes of last season, we are looking forward to the new season in our comfortable new venue. The cost this year will be £2 per week + £6 per annum for membership of the English Chess Federation. There will be coaching + both competitive games and friendly games. Parents wanting more information should contact Paul Badger on paulerbadger@btinternet.com The main club will continue to meet at The King’s Head on both Mondays and Wednesdays from 7.30 – 11.00. There will be 3 teams playing in the Norfolk League + 5 teams playing in The Friendly League. There will also be teams in all of the cup competitions. In addition, there will be both internal tournaments and the opportunity to play social chess. Anyone interested in joining us should contact the secretary, Andy Jones on a9jones76@yahoo.co.uk More general information can also be found via our website or facebook pages.

NORTH NORFOLK HOCKEY CLUB BREAKS NATIONAL RECORD
Founded in 2014, North Norfolk Hockey Club plays a major role in the Norfolk community by bringing people of all ages together through sport. The club has members ranging in age from 4 years of age into their 70’s and there is a refreshing 50/50 split by gender. The club has recently invested considerably in training its members to become England Hockey accredited coaches and on Sunday 7th July an incredible 17% of the club’s adult membership qualified as coaches, a national record. A spokesperson for the NNHC Junior section said: “Being a small club we are able to gain really first-hand feedback from parents. This investment in developing our coaches was inspired by them and we realise their aim is for us to provide professional, high quality coaching that supports all players to be as good as they can be. We might very well be the smallest club in Norfolk but I think we are the one investing most heavily in coaching. “As the club has grown over recent years, we have begun to participate in Juniors tournaments hosted by other Norfolk clubs. Stepping up to competitive matches was a real challenge for the players but we now punch much above our weight and have experienced considerable success but still kept it fun. Attendance levels at training on a Tuesday night are about 90% whatever the weather. “
BOWLING IN THE WIND
Do you remember a fortnight ago with all that wind? Holt definitely avoided the heavy rain, but didn’t it blow? Well, that Saturday was the Club’s scheduled “Picnic and extended roll up” – bring your friends, relatives and neighbours with your rugs, picnic baskets and champagne and enjoy some friendly bowling. Well it wasn’t quite like that, but with a hardy band of 18 braving the conditions and taking shelter in the clubhouse for the picnic, the bowling was thoroughly enjoyed – pity more bowlers hadn’t joined us. On the more competitive front, our evening leagues are struggling to see in the dark as the evenings
draw in. Now we are into August, positions in the league tables are beginning to sort themselves out and it looks as if most of our five teams will be somewhere in mid table but more of that in the next edition. Barry Pilgrim
Sporting Triumph for Local Police Officer
Local police officer Maria Greaves, who lives in Holt, has just become the first British female to complete a Deca Triathlon. That consists of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride & a full 26.2-mile marathon every day for 10 consecutive days. Her finish time for the event was a total of 161 hours. She placed 3rd overall out of 7 finishers. As if she wasn’t elated enough to finish this event her partner Darren proposed to her on the finish line - she said yes! email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk
