Holt 1940s event - 14th & 15th September 2019

FROM THE CONSULTING ROOMS

The 6th Holt 1940's weekend feels like a distant memory already! But we had an absolutely fantastic weekend of beautiful weather, amazing entertainment and a wonderful atmosphere. Now that we've had a chance to regroup, we are pleased to announce that over the weekend we raised a fantastic profit of just over £3,000. The Holt 1940's group are all volunteers and all our profit from the weekend goes to local good causes in Holt. This year we are supporting the Holt WI and Community Centre from which the Community Café is run. This year we saw more acts than ever with stalls in the High Street, entertainment on stage ranging from the D-Day Darlings to David Van Day & Sue Moxley to traditional acts encapsulating the spirit and atmosphere of the 1940's. Vintage vehicles lined the streets and the whole weekend passed without issue. Our ration book trail and pigeon race were once again a great success. As were the productions at Gresham's and the evening of entertainment at Holt RFC. We have had so much feedback from visitors and residents alike who enjoyed themselves immensely. We are hugely grateful to so many people that helped put the weekend together. Not least the North Norfolk Railway for their support. The event across the railway, Holt and Sheringham is now so big that we look forward to all working together in 2020 and putting on an even bigger and better event in Holt town centre for everyone to enjoy. We look forward to next year where we will be back again on the 19th & 20th September!

Report from 2019 BAcC Conference in Daventry Acupuncture is in an exciting place at the moment, with new research meeting theories and protocols that are 4 millennia old. On the new spectrum, Mel Koppelman, a blogger of evidence-based acupuncture, produced time lapsed photos of ATP (the chemical unit of energy currency in all living things) being generated at the site of a needle insertion in the skin. So we now know that needle therapy causes a large chemical change and a cascade of biochemical processes going back up to the brain. Mel is one of those people who get up and have 3 good ideas before breakfast, and win a Nobel prize! On the old spectrum, the conference theme revived the primary 8 meridians. These are said to be a blueprint for development from egg to baby and research now confirms changes in foetal growth to be explainable by these. Unfortunately the second yellow emperor, in his efforts to reset China, (much like Mao tse Tung, in modern times) burnt all the copies of the two texts dealing with these. However in a story reminiscent of a Dan Brown novel, they have been recovered from oral lineages and Korean and Japanese translations. So a wealth of information is becoming available on how the ancients thought and practised - and what these treatments may do for us today. With 4 workshops going on at any one time, I couldn’t get round to all of them. But there were also sessions focussing on fertility work, (an area where acupuncture is securing a very solid reputation), muscle pain and children’s acupuncture. I must mention Master Wu, Chinese exercise teacher, who always seems to supercharge the day for me. It was well worth braving the mad A14 traffic to get to the conference centre and his early morning sessions. His healing sessions always involve shaking, I imagine he sees westerners in general as stiff and carrying a lot of tension, and is determined to tackle our worst fault – stress! Exciting times, when Western medicine is finding scientific reasons for why Eastern medicine works.

Better Broadband for Norfolk: Whilst I do understand that not everyone in Norfolk can as yet access better broadband NCC continues to work to achieve that target. However, I am also aware that there are those who could access better broadband but are still uncertain of what is available or how to go about accessing it but now you will because: Openreach have a new online checker so go to: https://www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband/ • Press ‘Use our fibre checker button’ • Enter your postcode, tick the box to say you are not a robot then click on the green search button to the right of the box where you enter the postcode • Pick the address from the list • It then either shows services as available or says whether something is planned • When services are available it has a ‘View Providers’ button. This shows which Internet Service Providers are offering services You can then check all available providers and decide which offers the best service for you. Which Internet Service Provider can provide Fibre Broadband? A number of people have told me that when they ask their existing providers to quote for fibre some say they cannot offer fibre because only BT Openreach is allowed to offer that service. The truth is that no provider is barred from accessing fibre where it is available. You can quote back that: Openreach installs broadband infrastructure that can be used by any Internet Service Provider that chooses to make use of it. If a provider disagrees please ask them to put it in writing.

Warham Better Broadband: Warham think they have waited so long better broadband is not going to happen! However, a FTTP broadband solution is planned for Warham with implementation expected by the end of March 2020. And FTTP is not a substitute system and to find out how superior it is google ‘Fibre to the Premises’. But of course there is a however - the outcome is subject to survey and there always remains the small chance that it reveals something requiring more work than expected which could cause a delay or, in extreme cases, it is possible that severe technical issues will be discovered that prevent implementation altogether. The survey process is quite complex, but it is expected it will be completed late this year (2019). Once the survey is complete it should be possible to confirm which properties are covered. Better Broadband for Wells-next-the-Sea: It will surprise many villagers that not all of Wells has fibre broadband. It will probably surprise some of Wells residents. But in fact, there are a large number of properties which because of the early telephone system to which they are connected have had to wait. And the reward for patience is, that subject to all the various caveats I have periodically spelt out in our local magazines, some repeated above for Warham, by next spring those properties on an Exchange Only Line should be able to have a FTTP connection. PERIOD POVERTY: I hope all the broadband information is of use and now forgive me for ending with an item that continues to anger me – Value Added Tax (VAT) on sanitary items. It did not comfort me to have confirmed that the VAT on such items was now ‘only 5%’ – no one mentioned there was no VAT on gambling and bingo! Then it was explained to me that some of VAT on sanitary items can be claimed back by organisations providing support for abused women. The word ‘irony’ comes to mind.

News from The Venue

We had a record turnout for the very first Holt Town Fair at the Centre on 12th October, with around 300 people attending, including 47 organisations from the town. Great networking was enjoyed, new associations made and new volunteers and attendants signed up for the many great groups that meet in Holt. What a superb testament to the wonderful heart we have in our town! Huge thanks to Phil Barrett for organising this important event for the town, and we very much look forward to hosting it again next year. Another exciting initiative being started by Phil at the Venue is the new Arts Forum, an opportunity to hear an informal live interview with prominent local artists of all genres from our area. We are thrilled to announce that the first will be Anwen, Lady Hurt on 25th October at 7pm in the Lounge – the newly refurbished bar will be open, and the event is free, so please do come and hear all about her amazing journey through the arts. These events will run monthly, so keep an eye out for the next artist to be announced. If dancing is your thing, or you fancy trying something new, then check out our newest User Group to start at the centre on Wed 6th November – Line Dancing for beginners. Dancing has been proven to improve mood, fitness and even boost brain function, so there’s no excuse to not join in! Why not try it and burn off a few calories before the mince pie season begins in earnest. Don’t forget that our regular monthly quiz is happening on 7th Nov at 7pm in the lounge – a fun, informal get together to test your little grey cells! And Bingo will be on Sat 16th November next month, as we have the Holt Lights Switch On happening in the middle of the month, so pop the new date in your diary. We will be doing Cash Bingo in November rather than prize Bingo. Love Holt will be having their usual public meeting on 30th October at 5.30 in the Centre – do please come along and hear all that they are doing to promote the town, as it is so exciting and they are keen to have as many residents, organisations and businesses involved as possible. For more information or to book, please call 01263 713427 or email holtcommunitycentre@gmail.com. Carolyn Burn, Chairperson.

BRISTON DAY CENTRE NEWS

Where have the last few weeks gone? We are so busy enjoying ourselves here at the Centre that the time just flies! The sun shone for us when we had a lovely trip on the Mississippi Paddle Steamer from Horning followed by lunch in the local pub. We have been to Blickling Hall and Pensthorpe for coffee and a scone, and another day we had a ride through the beautiful countryside to Holkham Park where there were lots of deer roaming in the grounds. A nice ploughman’s lunch was enjoyed at Bircham Windmill. We have had lots of laughter and fun when Mick Leary played his Yamaha keyboard to us and told us lots of jokes, and also when Heather had us jumping up and down in our seats with her ‘Extend’ exercises. On Wednesday 14th November between 9.30 and 11.00a.m. Karen the clothes lady will be at the Centre with a good selection of very nice ladies blouses, jumpers, skirts, trousers and underwear also a small selection of menswear, so if you would like to call in and have a look you are very welcome. If you are retired or nearly-retired, and you think you could enjoy doing these sorts of things with our lovely band of ‘regulars’ then why not ‘phone Dorothy or Carol on a Monday or Thursday, on 01263 861120, to book a ‘taster’ session or just pop in and say ‘hello’ and find out more about us! We meet every Monday and Thursday at All Saints Community Centre. All Saints Close, Briston, from 9.30am - 2.30pm.

1940s Are Not Just Past History

Dear Jo, It was very nice to read last week the article by Daphne Heaton regarding the 40s weekend in Holt and the consideration for veterans of WWII living in the area. As such a veteran, I like the idea of a tent as suggested. The 40s is still a period which some of us remember as our own youth and childhood and so it is not only "past history". For those of us for whom it is still part of our present, it is good to be able to make connections in this modern world - not just with others of our age but with generations of all ages. In years ahead a tent to make that possible (with a chair to rest on too!) would be very welcome. Yours sincerely, A WWII veteran.

Thank You

Dear Jo, May I through the Holt Chronicle thank everyone who has supported me in the last 3.5 years and following the death of my husband Donnie Woodhouse. My special thanks go to Jackie and Richard, Rita and Vic, our nephew Robert, and our friend Chrissie. Thank you to everyone who sent sympathy cards and attended the Church service. I would also like mention to Glendon House, who showed kindness and care and also the Palliative Team who were with Donnie in his final days. All of the donations came to £718.80 and have bene divided between the Big.C and the Alzheimer’s Society. Thank you also to Lloyd Durham Funeral Directors of High Kelling for showing such kindness and care. From Donnie’s ever-loving wife – Brenda.

New charter urges Norfolk to banish balloons and leave the lantern at home

The launch of a new balloon and lantern charter on Sunday 13 October, saw Norfolk set to go green when it comes to celebrating. Individuals and organisations are being urged to ditch harmful releases of helium balloons and sky lanterns and try new and innovative ways to mark important occasions. Cllr Andy Grant, Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member for Environment & Waste, said: “We would love people to banish the helium balloon and leave the sky lantern at home as these outdated ways of celebrating are harmful, particularly to animals. Do you have unwanted books “Please do encourage your organisation or business to sign the charter to (old or new) you wish to dispose of? pledge not only that there’ll be no sky lantern or helium balloon releases on their land, but also to promote new and sustainable ways to celebrate, such as Are you clearing a house containing books? using giant bubbles and flying kites or streamers. :H ZRXOG EH SOHDVHG WR PDNH D IDLU RŕľľHU IRU WKHP IURP “Help us showcase all the fantastic ways we can choose to celebrate an single items to large collections. important event while respecting the environment at the same time!â€? The launch is just the start, as over the coming months Norfolk County Please contact David Ford 01263 741690 Council will be urging businesses, communities, landowners, schools and P.S. We also buy Maps and Old Postcards individuals across the county to sign up to the charter. The charter is for Member of the PBFA anyone, whether it’s a large organisation or just one person. Everyone can choose to pledge to use safer and more environmentally friendly ways to celebrate and not allow the release of balloons or lanterns on land they own. This builds on the bans that are already in place across many areas of the country, including in Norfolk where the County Council has not allowed the release of helium balloons or sky lanterns on land it owns since 2015. There are serious after effects of balloon and lantern releases that many people may never have thought about. Sadly, animals can get hurt or die from getting trapped in or eating the remains of lanterns and balloons which can end up as litter in the countryside, on beaches and in the sea. Sky lanterns are also a fire risk. Figures show that Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service has been called to 6 reports of fires caused by sky lanterns since June 2014. Three of the calls related to sky lanterns in trees and in one incident a lantern set alight to 200 square metres of marram grass at Waxham. Alternatives to balloon and sky lantern releases include using giant bubbles, flying kites, banners and streamers, drumming, and tree planting. To find out more, and download the charter pledge poster to display at your home, organisation or business visit: www.norfolk.gov.uk/balloonsandskylanterns

A Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable

The Characters of Commerce. Part 3 by Leslie Kinsley Where there is now a kebab takeaway, was the Co-op. It sold everything you could think of and I still recall my Mother’s ‘divi’ number. There were two more butchers, Warnes in Gordon Road and Lambert on Burgh Beck Road. Finally, on that side, if you went to the end of Burgh Beck Road, there were a pair of huts. One held Stanley Vardigan who mended shoes and boots, the other was a fish and chip shop run by his brother Geoffrey. My favourite shop however was that of ‘Chemical Bill’, Mr Fisher sold groceries at the shop opposite what is now the Co-op. He was also a chemist, and we would go to him with our ailments rather than any doctor. No one could afford the doctor then, as there was no NHS. He also provided stuff to put your dog down. No-one went to the vet with their pets then. Vets were for farm animals. He had a hut next to his shop which held a café in wartime. He sold sausage and mash and jam tart and custard, and all the soldiers came there. We never did find out where he got his sausage in a time of rationing. One day, when there was a line of army vehicles queued up, a German plane appeared and started shooting. All the soldiers dived out of their vehicles and hid in the hedge. At Christmas, Mr Fisher used his hut as a Bazaar, which sold gifts. I used to work in there after school, as I was friendly with his son and he was always kind to me. One day however, I was very bad. There were stink bombs on sale and I stole some and put them in my pocket. The Fishers

always gave me my tea when I was working and as I sat down one of the stolen bombs broke! What a stink! They do say ‘Your sins will find you out’ and they certainly did this time

The Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month. St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. The Church contains many interesting features, including a 14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi. “Shrinking our carbon footprint!”

Dear friends When we agreed to organize a forum on the issues and challenges of climate, we did so not knowing how many people would be interested. We brought together five keynote speakers not knowing if we could provide them with an audience. We need not have worried! Almost a hundred people gathered in the parish church to hear what our speakers had to say and to ask them some searching questions. The number of people who attended demonstrated the growing concern about the changing climate and the questions people asked revealed a desire to know what to do to help make a difference. The scientific evidence leaves no doubt that the climate is changing fast, and that human activity is responsible for the quickening pace of that change. But of course, we don’t need the scientific evidence, the extreme weather conditions we are experiencing here and around the world are proof enough. The world is at a tipping point and there is an urgency to act now in order to reduce our carbon footprint to try and limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. While we should be lobbying governments to make the necessary legislation needed and big business to change their behaviour, we all can make changes to our lifestyles to benefit the planet. In response to some questions our speakers suggested shopping less and responsibly, avoiding plastic packaging and food waste. Not using energy unnecessarily, for example by leaving electrical devices on ‘stand-by.’ Eating less meat and moving to a more plant-based diet would improve the fertility of soil. Encouraging insect life in our gardens will improve pollination and help maintain the diversity of the eco system. Making sacrifices, changing our lifestyles will help reduce our carbon emissions. Questions were raised about Extinction Rebellion (XR) for which there was support. Not all of the protestors are extremists said one of our speakers, adding that in fact the extremists are often not acting in accordance with the ethos of XR. It was also acknowledged that XR are being successful in drawing the government’s attention to climate change and getting them to take action and as such they are valuable despite objections to what they are doing. The changing climate will not only cause huge changes to the environment but could also threaten the peace and stability of humanity. Again, our speakers highlighted the implications of the push of humanity away from the Equator as the planet gets hotter and how it will put pressure on world peace as populations become intensely gathered. Our reliance on water also has implications for world peace as climate change diminishes the supply; if we look at the migration of other species, we can see that humanity is merely following suit. Given all that we had heard one person asked if we could be optimistic. To which came a very clear reply that we had to be optimistic otherwise we would not be motivated to work for change. Faced with challenges of climate change it is easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless to make a difference. Yet we can all www.holtchronicle.co.uk

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

Free Parking for Remembrance Sunday

On Tuesday 1 October, after a superb lunch, Sue and Guy Morton gave a fascinating talk called “Bell Ringing in Norfolk”.

Sue explained that bell ringing was an English tradition. At St Peter Mancroft in Norwich in 1731, the Bloody Peal (so-called because bell ringers had blood on their hands at the end) was rung by 8 people over 8 hours and 15 minutes. This was a record for 151 years!

Sue and Guy met through bell ringing and decided to pursue their mutual interest at All Saints Church, Upper Sheringham. A bell hanger’s report on the six bells, which had been cast in 1841, stated that they were in a bad condition. The parochial church council asked Sue to co-ordinate a major fundraising project to re-hang the derelict bells to enable traditional English full-circle bell ringing to take place again (the bells have not been rung in this way since 1935). A chiming mechanism is also to be installed to ensure the bells can be sounded even when there are no experienced bell ringers available. So far £73,000 has been raised, another £12,000 is needed.

Sue and Guy demonstrated four-in-hand ringing, both having two handbells in each hand, their performance attracting plentiful applause. The talk ended with a lively questions and answers session and afterwards 6 members tried their hand at bell ringing.

On behalf of the 34 members present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Sue and Guy for their engaging talk and demonstration. We shall next meet at the Links Hotel in West Runton on Tuesday 5 November when Steve Piotrowski will talk about the award-winning Barn Owl Recovery Project. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our monthly meetings, you will be warmly welcomed.

North Norfolk District Council to offer free parking across district on Sunday 10 November Parking in North Norfolk District Council-owned car parks will be free on Remembrance Sunday (10 November 2019). In response to local community wishes, North Norfolk District Council will waive parking fees all day on Remembrance Sunday. Information will be displayed in advance in all car parks to give notice of free parking. The payment machines will be covered up on the day to make it clear to users that the car parks will not require payment. Parking charges in North Norfolk District Council car parks usually apply from 8am to 6pm. Cllr. Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of the Council, said: “As in previous years, North Norfolk District Council will be supporting Remembrance Day commemorations by ensuring that parking is free in all District Council-owned car parks on Sunday 10 November for those wishing to pay their respects.”

King’s Head Macmillan Coffee Morning

A recent Coffee Morning held at The Kings Head Letheringsett raised £244.96. Organised by the Manageress Jessica Petrie and her mum Karen, the money was handed to Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk. The money will be used by Macmillan Cancer Support to help local people with cancer and their families.

Weybourne WI

Come to La Ferté St Aubin with the Wells Twinning Group

It was a bright autumn day on Thursday, 10th October, when a group of members and friends from Weybourne WI travelled by coach to spend the day at King’s Lynn. After a refreshment break on arrival, we divided into two groups for a guided tour around the town. One group took the maritime trail which featured the historic Hanseatic buildings, while the other concentrated on the ‘darker side’ of the town and included the exorcist’s house and information about hangings and witch hunts. After the tours ended we chose various locations to eat lunch, before spending some time browsing in the shops and exploring the town further. Everyone agreed it had been an enjoyable outing.

Feel like a fun trip to France in excellent company? This is your opportunity. The Wells-next-the-Sea Twinning Group will travel by coach to visit the delightful town of La Ferté between Tuesday 14th April and Sunday 19th April 2020. Be assured of plenty of fun, outstanding cultural visits and plenty of mouth-watering French cuisine in a variety of venues. Come and see the châteaux and the quaint villages of the Sologne area whilst making new friends and memories. You will stay with French hosts renowned for giving the warmest of welcomes. French and English are spoken throughout the holiday as friendships are forged and enjoyed. The visit will end with a sumptuous Gala Meal in La Ferté where you will experience local entertainment. You will have the opportunity to return your hosts’ hospitality in 2021. The cost of your visit will be around £225. For more information about the visit, look on the Wells Twinning web site at wellstowntwinning.co.uk or contact Jill Francis, Group President, on jillywilly2305@gmail.com or phone 01328 853291. Come and enjoy yourselves in France. Barry Howes.

'Autumn Splendour’ was the title of Julia Knight’s demonstration at our October meeting and the stage was a riot of colour by the time she had finished. Her splendid arrangements reflected the colour harmony of autumn from early morning and late afternoon sunshine to harvest festivals and apple scrumping to the flickering flames of the fireside. Julia gave us lots of tips along the way and I for one will be filling my sunflower heads with berries or pins for a different effect in arrangements once the petals have fallen. She also told us lots of amusing stories, the favourite being that she was once introduced as a Cadbury’s bar after referring to herself as a fruit and nutcase! The title for the competition for October was ‘The Bewitching Hour’ and there were some very spooky looking arrangements, including witches and broomsticks alongside the flowers and foliage! The People's Choice winner was Diane Randell.

Holt and District Probus Club

After tucking into a delightful meal (including lamb shank) at The Feathers in Holt, Holt and District Probus Club members were treated to a fascinating talk by Ralph Jackman. Ralph who was born and bred and still lives in Norfolk, has recently published an historical novel ‘Agrippa’s Wake’ set in ancient Rome in the time of Octavian. But Ralph’s talk was not fiction but shed light on the realities of life at that time. He titled it ‘How to be a Roman Emperor’ and it was about Octavian, his life and times. Born in 63 BC, when his great uncle Julius Caesar was assassinated in 43 BC Octavian was named as his heir. With Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, he set out to defeat the assassins of Caesar. With that achieved, with due despatch, Lepidus was driven into exile and Antony after being defeated then committed suicide which left Octavian, also known to us as Caesar Augustus, to organise Rome with himself as military dictator – though he preferred to be known as First Citizen of the State. He went on to rule until his death in AD 14. Ralph’s talk was accompanied by pictures projected onto a screen and was it has to be said, a lively and engaging talk. Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782. Refer also to https://holtprobusclub.wordpress.com/ followed by the main talk. There will also be a time for prayer ministry A Prayer Journey at the end of the evening. We look forward to seeing you from 7pm for On Monday 28th October we are delighted to welcome Lea Jamieson to coffee, cakes and chat, for a 7.30pm start. speak to us at our second meeting at Holt Community Centre. Lea had a varied career in Midwifery retiring as Head of Professional Midwifery at Kings College London University after the first Degree midwives graduated. Since 1980 she has been led in an Enabling Prayer Ministry, running regular retreats in Finland during a recent nine-year period and enjoying invitations to different Christian denominations, including Pentecostals, Roman Catholics, Baptists and predominantly Evangelical Church of England Congregations. Her emphasis is on deepening a relationship with God through Contemplative Prayer or Christian Meditation. Lea shares a traditional approach as well as imaginative prayer journeys based on Bible truths and stories. A number of her prayer sessions are recorded on CDs. So do come and join us for an evening of fellowship, wonderful worship

Holt Town Fair Resounding Success.

I think we can honestly say that Saturday’s Town Fair was a great success. There was such an excited buzz in the air, as not only large numbers of the public came and explored the wonderful array of tables and information on offer, but stallholders themselves net-worked and made valuable contacts with one another.

Following a hugely successful 2018 which saw the UK Men’s Sheds Association expand and create numerous community spaces throughout Norfolk, strides are being made to implement a group in Holt. Holt Youth Project, Old Station Way in Holt, will be hosting an initial meeting on Wednesday 30th October at 2pm for prospective ‘Shedders’ to find out more about the initiative, ask questions and get involved. Please see the poster for more information. Contact Stephen Hurley on telephone/text: 07748 335041 and email: stephen.hurley@ norfolk.gov.uk.

No one, unfortunately, logged the actual numbers of those attending but a guestimate would put it at 200 – 300 people, perhaps more, both attending and participating. The following quotes from participating organisations say it all: “There was a great sense of community bonhomie.” “We had a very productive day with lots of interest.” “It was a revelation to see so many organisations that are in and around Holt and how much the area has to offer people of all ages and abilities.” “I do hope that you run the event next year.” “Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to promote ourselves. We had more success in gathering potential recruits than we could have hoped and thought the day went outstandingly well.” “A very productive event – good for networking too.” “I said it on the day, and I’ll say it again, huge congratulations.” Now that we know, that we can not only make it happen but, that it works, we will hope to build on this year’s success by holding another Fair, next year, at around the same time.

With very many thanks to everyone who participated or came along on the day, for their enthusiasm, encouragement and support in making this year’s Town Fair a success. And if you didn’t or weren’t able to come along this time do look out for publicity and information about the next one. Phil Barrett (Chair of UCAN)

On 14th October, fuchsia specialist Kristopher Harper talked about James Lye who, in Victorian times, was responsible for producing many new fuchsia varieties. As head gardener for the granddaughter of the Earl of Radnor at Clyffe Hall in Wiltshire, he was keen to establish his reputation at the local flower shows and grew huge pyramidal plants for exhibition. Soon his work reached a wider following through the garden magazines of the time, who published lavish colour plates of his latest varieties, which he then sent mail order to enthusiasts at £5 per plant! Many varieties were named after his family or those of his employers. Amy Lye is particularly beautiful, with long stems, white tubes and sepals and a long, deep pink corolla. Kristopher then gave us a demonstration of how to plant and care for fuchsias. They originate from the Americas and New Zealand. Many are half hardy but survive well outside in light soils. Plants should be only lightly trimmed in autumn but can be cut hard back in spring to encourage new shoots. This is the best time to take cuttings. The petals are edible and will liven up salads but you can also eat the berries and gather them for fuchsia gin or jam, although you would need to grow an awful lot of fuchsias to make a pan full! FIREWORK FEARS!

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible. Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary. Always keep dogs and cats indoors during fireworks and make sure dogs are walked earlier in the day to avoid being out when fireworks are let off. Many pets go missing at this time of year when they get scared by fireworks so make sure all pets are easily identified with a collar and tag or microchip (with up to date contact details) so that they can be reunited with you if they get scared and manage to run off. It can help to build your pet a safe den and keep windows, doors and curtains closed to minimise noise as much as possible. Some pets will find it comforting to have an alternative noise so keeping the radio or television on can help to reduce awareness of the sound of fireworks. Pets will often look to you for reassurance during stressful situations so try to act as normally as possible and make sure not to tell pets off if they are behaving in a stressed manner during fireworks. It is also important to reward calm and relaxed behaviour with cuddles and treats!

There are also several medicines and techniques which can be used to reduce anxiety around firework season. Pheromone-based and

CT Scanners allow a complete 3D image of the pet, greatly assisting in diagnosis and management of tumours, orthopaedic disease, elbow dysplasia, spinal disease and much more!

natural calming products come in several varieties including plug-in diffusers, tablets, liquids, collars and sprays. These products can help pets feel more relaxed and calm and should ideally be started at least 48 hours (preferably longer) before fireworks are due to start. Noise phobia CDs are also available and are designed to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a long period of time in the run up to Firework Night. It’s also important to remember small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as birds during this stressful season. These pets can also get easily scared and if possible these pets should be moved into a quiet room or shed. If this is not possible cages should be covered to reduce the sound of the fireworks and turned to face a wall so the firework lights are less visible. It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover. Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed. As November creeps up its time to start thinking about Firework season and what we can do to help our pets.

NNDC Prosecute Two Firms for Over £30.000 for Asbestos Offences

Breaches of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 were committed by BES Safe Removals and Carl Wright Training Services. BES Safe Removals Ltd, trading as 1st Choice Asbestos, pled guilty to six offences under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 while and Carl Wright Training Services Ltd pleaded guilty to two offences under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Control of Asbestos Regulations. Norwich Magistrates ordered BES Safe Removals Ltd to pay fines and costs totalling £30,000 and ordered Carl Wright Training Services to pay fines and costs totalling £880. Both companies were also required to a pay victim surcharge. On the 5 and 6 of March 2018, BES Safe Removals Ltd sent two employees to remove a quantity of asbestos insulating board from ceilings at a hotel in North Norfolk. The removal of asbestos insulating board should only be undertaken by asbestos contractors that hold the appropriate licence from the Health and Safety Executive. It was found that BES does not hold such a licence so the Council took the company to court on behalf of the hotel. The company failed to remove all of the asbestos insulating board from the hotel with asbestos debris being found on the joists of the hotel’s ceiling. BES then failed to follow all of the required procedures while removing the asbestos and importantly did not have adequate decontamination procedures in place for their employees. The hotel chased a clearance certificate from BES who then sent Carl Wright Training Services Ltd to the hotel to look at the work that had been undertaken. Carl Wright Training Services undertook as assessment of the rooms in which the work had been carried out which included running a hand over the surfaces to see if there was any asbestos dust left in the rooms. If there had been this dust would have been made airborne putting those in the room at the time at risk. The asbestos debris which had been left on the ceiling joists by BES was not identified during this visit. At all times the hotel tried to do everything correctly but they were badly misled by both defendant companies. In light of this both defendants entered not guilty pleas at an earlier hearing on 13 June 2019. Cllr Nigel Lloyd, North Norfolk District Council's Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “It takes a huge amount of time and effort to deliver a successful prosecution, NNDC take no pleasure from taking these actions. However, the health and Safety of our residents in North Norfolk is paramount. I hope this case serves to alert people to the danger of inappropriately dealing with asbestos and acts as a deterrent to others. I urge residents to take professional advice with asbestos removal and to only use licensed operators."

It’s Full Autumn out there and that can only mean one thing: the return of possibly the best United Kingdom bread and butter pudding in the European Union (as you read this there may not be time for anyone to prove otherwise!)

The secret ingredient is Ann Graveling’s Silver Medal World Championship-winning marmalade, with which residents of Overstrand Road are very familiar thanks to the burgeoning roadside marmalade pit-stop outside No97. In fact people have driven for hundreds of miles for this very spread and, if it’s all gone, disgruntled shoppers have been known to lay siege to the front door demanding replenishments. Overstrand Road is often brought to a complete standstill due to impatient marmalade-hunters, and although Ann cleverly shifted the blame for recent congestion onto Anglian Water we all know the real story.

Arguably the best way to try this legendary marmalade is within Reis’s equally legendary bread and butter

I've long believed that good food, good eating, is all about risk. Whether we're talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime associates, food, for me, has always been an adventure. Anthony Bourdain

Wally Rolfe was what is known in Norfolk as a "dicky dealer" a famously clever species who could find you anything you wanted be it animal, vegetable or mineral. Lady Hermione Domme-Tee was looking for a trained gundog for her husband, Sir Humphrey and Wally Rolfe had been recommended. Calling on him she said: "Sir Humphrey wants a labrador which is good in the house, good in the field and a hundred percent sound." Wally responded: "I're got jes what you want. I're got one here thas's as sweet as a nut around the place; yow can take et into the field and that'll do any mortal thing yow like ter mention and yow can put et infront of any vet in the country." Hermione asked what Wally was asking for it and he said: "Well, I ought ter ask yer two-and-a-half grand but we'll settle for two." Hermione made him out a cheque for £2,000 and took the labrador away. Seeing him in the shooting field about six weeks later, she said: "Mr Rolfe, that labrador sold us as fouled every roomNR26 in our twenty-one Holt Road, you Upper Sheringham 8TU room mansion. We've taken it into the field and it's coursed, caught, killed and mangled six hares. You can hear it whining three fields way and the vet says it's got PRA, hereditary cataracts, hip-dysplacia and osteo condrosis desicans." Taking his pipe outEveryone of his mouth, Wally responded phlegmatically: Welcome "Yow'll never sell a dog if yow talk about et like that!" Coaching given for beginners N.B. It's a sure thing that this story is apocryphal. No Norfolk dealer would be as brazen as this, and it's nottry in thethe Norfolk character. And, when Come game you say "Sir Humphrey Domme-Tee" quickly, you don't see a shooting baronet, but rather a rotund little chap sitting on the park wall.

Place layers of brioche in the bottom of the tray, overlapping slightly

Everyone Welcome Come and try the game Coaching for Beginners Normal opening hours 9am – 9pm

WELLS LIFEBOAT NEEDS YOU!

Wells lifeboat launches major recruitment drive Could you join our team? We are looking for new volunteers to join us and are seeking people with a wide range of skills and backgrounds. If you think we could be for you and you have time to give, we want to hear from you. We are seeking operational crew for the lifeboat, shore crew to help launch and recover our lifeboats, deputy launching authorities, fundraisers, a deputy press officer to help raise peoples’ awareness of what we do, ‘saving lives at sea’ and a community safety officer, to promote safety awareness in the community. Soon we’ll be taking delivery of a new, state of the art lifeboat, RNLI’s Shannon Class, which will require additional volunteers to keep her in tip-top condition like our current Mersey Class, Doris M Mann of Ampthill which has been the stations all-weather lifeboat and is still in pristine condition even though she’s been in service for nearly thirty years and has been involved in more than 150 rescues. Although she has been up-graded, she is still thirty years old and is well overdue for replacement. There will also be a new boathouse which, apart from housing the lifeboats, will have up-graded facilities for the crew and shore helpers and will allow greater access to the public. It will have it’s own gift shop which will require additional staff to run it. That’s why we need people like you. So on Saturday, 19 October, we are holding a Volunteer Recruitment Event at the current boathouse at the bottom of Beach Road, Wells-next-the-Sea between 11.00 am - 3.00 pm. Come down and see us, talk to people like you and meet our volunteers, we can tell you what’s involved and what’s to be gained by becoming part of the Wells Lifeboat Station RNLI family. You don’t have to live in Wells. We have a number of volunteers who live quite a long way from the station. It would help if we now Shannon Class Lifeboat you are coming as we have limited free parking available for the event. Email us at wells@rnli.org.uk or ring the Boathouse on 01328 710230 and we will look forward to welcoming you. The Snakes’ Problem Solved

When the Ark came to rest on Mount Ararat’s crest, Noah set up the gangplank and said, “the world is so beautiful, go forth and be fruitful, “and multiply, as you were bred.” But the poor little snakes couldn’t multiply, Which made Noah exceedingly sad. They said, “We are adders, as in Snakes and Ladders, “So of course, we can only add!” But a Cobra, snake King, said to Noah, “one thing, “Can we have the dead wood from the Flood?” Noah didn’t refuse it, said “Glad you can use it,” And they said, “Thank you so much, me Lud!” Anon Noah came by, saw the snakes multiply, “Why, how did you do it?” said he. “Well, you gave us the wood,” said the Cobra with hood, “Now we can use logs, you see!”

The Briston Mystery Play

TOHU WA BOHU: a community creation Earlier this year North Norfolk Arts Cooperative worked with local residents to create a multimedia project which resulted in performances in All Saints Church Briston at the end of June. The films, photographs, masks, costumes and artwork will be on exhibition ONE DAY ONLY EXHIBITION SATURDAY NOVEMBER 9th 10.00 – 4.00 HOLT COMMUNITY CENTRE KERRIDGE WAY NR25 6DN Free Entry: Refreshments available Supported by North Norfolk District Council Arts & Culture Awards

Thanks to the great efforts of a local artist the metal sign now stands truly proud on this pretty village green. There are pictures on the sign which depict local crafts and activities as well as the history of the community. These have been brought to life in front of sun beams of light. “Norfolk is renowned for its village signs says Parish Council Chairman Steve Yerby “here is a superb example of one which brings our village and its history alive. The launch was watched by crowds of villagers and many well behaved dogs. David Dalzell, lead artist for the restoration of Thursford Village Sign. SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY

190341

Sheringham and District Philatelic Society discovered some surprising aspects of Austria on Monday 15th October. Mike Clarke, one of our members, showed part of a collection started by his father which he had extended. Before stamps were issued in 1850 letters were carried throughout an extensive European empire and beyond – examples of such letters have remarkable handwriting. Later, Austria shrank into a small, landlocked republic, but the postal service was keen for business. The Danube Steam Navigation Company carried mail. On the railways the number of the mail train was included in the cancelling mark on the envelope. Balloon postcards and an annual stamp day with special issues also generated income. Inflation between 1921 and 1924 saw the cost of sending a postcard rise 14,000%. A 1933 design was produced in triplicate – a set for each of the official languages. The impact of war featured in the display including censored and prisoner of war mail. Members warmly thanked Mike for his PBDN with border_Layout 1 10/10/2019 14:58 Page 1 interesting talk and for answering questions. Our annual quiz night is 11th November starting at 7.30 pm at West Runton Church Hall. Prospective members will be welcomed.

Former education chief urges more people to be dementia research heroes

A former Deputy Director for Education has become Norfolk’s newest Dementia Research Champion and is urging people to take part in research. Tony Jackson, 79, from Costessey, says people have everything to gain from signing-up to Join Dementia Research (www.joindementiaresearch .nihr.ac.uk) a website that matches volunteers to local studies. Mr Jackson’s new role as Join Dementia Research Champion will see him working closely with patients and health professionals to raise awareness of how people can get involved to help in the fight to beat dementia. There are over 850,000 people living with Dementia in the UK and North Norfolk has one of the highest rates of diagnosis in England. Over 40,000 people have signed-up nationwide with nearly 3,000 of those living in Norfolk. However, only 500 of those registered locally have a diagnosis and more volunteers are needed. The Join Dementia Research Website is backed by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) and several leading dementia charities. People with or without a diagnosis of dementia can register via the website or by calling the charities involved. They are then matched to relevant studies, ranging from online questionnaires to studies involving new medications. There is no obligation to take part. Mr Jackson, who began his career as a teacher before working his way up to the role of Norfolk Deputy Director of Education, has volunteered in various roles since his retirement. He was attracted to the Champion role by the work being done by Join Dementia Research to engage the public in the fight against the condition. He said, “Dementia is a huge problem, so the need to find ways of identifying and tackling it at an early stage is tremendously important. Join Dementia Research is a great way of doing that”. He stressed that volunteers are at the heart of research, “There is a lot of research going on but not enough volunteers. And unless people volunteer we won’t be able to make improvements to treatments and care. Mr Jackson believes people can be heroes by taking part in research, “The real heroes aren’t just the researchers, but the volunteers too. The more people get involved the more everyone can benefit and there is everything to gain from registering. Real progress can be made and you can genuinely make a difference”. Mr Jackson also volunteers as a Patient Research Ambassador for the NIHR and says taking part in research can be very satisfying, “It makes you feel like you’re making a contribution and it can offer you a new perspective”. Patient Research Ambassadors are members of the public who promote research in a variety of ways. Anyone can apply to be a volunteer and they do not necessarily have to have participated in a study. Involvement can be flexible and duties are shaped around what a volunteer can do. To find out more about getting involved in all NIHR research visit www.bepartofresearch.uk.

HOLT BELLRINGERS TO HOST NORTHERN BRANCH MEETING

On Saturday 16th November the Holt bell ringers will welcome their bellringing friends from the Northern Branch of the Norwich Association of Ringers to Holt for their Annual General Meeting. This will involve ringing the bells from 3pm to 4pm followed by a Service taken by Fr Howard Stoker at 4pm. We will then invite them all to tea in the meeting room followed by our Annual General Meeting. After the formalities, there will be more bellringing for around 30 to 45 minutes. This will be a lovely opportunity for bell ringers from across Norfolk to enjoy our beautiful church and bells. The Northern Branch actually stretches from the coast as far as Wymondham so quite a journey for some! We hope you will enjoy hearing our bells ringing out as we welcome the Branch to our town. Any questions do please get in touch. Sue Morton, Holt Tower Captain on 01263 826078.

Holt Bowls Club

A Thank You and an Apology Thank you Phil Barrett; thank you for giving Holt Bowls Club the opportunity to promote our activities at the Holt Town Fair. We received a welcome response to our stand (shown in the picture) and finished the day with over a dozen people who wanted to hear from us in the Spring before our bowling re-opens. This was much better than we could have hoped at the start.

Last edition I published the names of those who had won our internal competitions this year. I have to apologise to Gloria Nabarro and Chris Hunter who should have been listed as winning the Australian Pairs but whose names were omitted. To blame the computer would be wrong – it was the operator! Sorry.

Rowing at Blakeney And on The Broads

Paving & Landscaping

07 788 5387 31 or 01263 823166

Shorter days and colder winds have only briefly daunted the members of your local rowing club. Outings have continued to Blakeney Point and to Cley whenever possible. At the time of writing, a voyage is being planned from Wroxham, on 14th October, so that new waterways can be explored. There will be the added appeal of mooring up for a pub lunch. After this outing both skiffs – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – will remain at Blakeney for a few more weeks before winter rowing begins from Cox’s Boatyard at Barton Turf. On the competition front, the next race will be on 7th December in Norwich when the Carrow Cup will be the prize. This is the oldest event on the rowing calendar and one of the most keenly contested. Two Blakeney crews have been selected and preparations will soon begin in earnest. The course takes participants through the centre of the city and calls for rowing stamina and skilled coxing. It’s a great day out when, after the race, camaraderie amongst rowers from a range of clubs is most evident. Why not try your hand at skiff rowing either at Blakeney or on the Broads? There is no need to take part in races, just come along and meet people of all ages who enjoy being active in beautiful surroundings. Come and sample three rows before deciding whether to join. You don’t have to be an experienced rower and coaching is always available. Look for further details on crablakeney.wordpress.com.
