Part of the evening’s entertainment will be the sight of some 10 or more panto horses ‘racing’ up and down the high street in an effort to win the coveted SOWERBY’s HOLT CHRISTMAS TROPHY. I always enjoy presenting the certificates to our younger residents who have kept up their reading with the Library over the summer holidays. Although a little while since I had the pleasure, I do think they and their parents and guardians deserve a huge round of applause. I always think of reading as the gateway to learning, if you have great reading skills you can learn from so many written materials. This year in Holt alone 72 children took part in the main challenge for primary aged children and another 12 in the early years challenge for pre-schoolers. 5 of the pre-schoolers completed the challenge by reading 6 books and 42 of the primary aged children also completed. Between them, these children borrowed 821 books this summer. I also had the very great pleasure of attending the Holt Community Group Day at the Community Centre a couple of weeks ago. Wow - what a tremendous event with so many varied and interesting clubs groups and organisations represented. It was also fantastic to see so many people visiting the event, if only I had some spare time to join in some of the activities I would so like to. I lost my colleague for a while and later found out she had been climbing the Scout training wall in some incredible heels! It seems we can all take up something new if we only have the time and energy. Tomorrow I will be looking again at the issues of parking on the Hempstead Road and trying to see if we can find any new ideas to tackle the problems we face there. I am also very much looking forward to my visit to the Holt Youth Project to learn more about their work and how we can help. Until next time.....

News from The Venue

We are so excited to be welcoming a new Café called CHAT to the Centre, starting on 4th November and which will run weekly on a Monday from 9am to Midday. The café is being run jointly by Ceridwen Smee, Holt Community Cafe and The Venue, and is being started to support people with mental health challenges. It will be a donation only café, with all the money raised being used to maintain and improve the service and cover the costs and will be run by volunteers. We recognise mental health as being a huge area in our community which needs much support, and in which community plays a massive role, and as such wanted to facilitate the opening of this important resource for the town. If you would like to be involved, do pop along and talk to us, as we always need new volunteers to keep these important projects going. Another new and exciting initiative starting on 8th November is the New Expressionists Art Group, running on a Friday from 11am to 1pm in the back room of the Centre. Headed up by local artist Beverley Scott MA and myself, we will be exploring and experimenting with many art techniques and approaches, taking a flexible and inclusive approach to making in a really fun and accessible way. We very much want to see people join who maybe haven’t engaged with art before, who maybe think they can’t do it (!) or who would like to challenge their preconceptions about what art is. It’s a free group, but places are limited by space, so please call and reserve you spot early. Also, on the Art front, we have extended the NOVA exhibition for another few weeks, and will be starting a new open submission exhibition entitled Midwinter on 2nd December. We are inviting submissions for this now, so if you fancy seeing your art displayed in the Centre, please get in touch. Our first Art Forum was a great success, with over 50 people turning up to hear a really entertaining and interesting interview by Phil Barrett of Anwen, Lady Hurt, who has also now agreed to be our Patron, which we are absolutely thrilled about! Anwen’s experience and knowledge of the Arts will be a tremendous asset to the Charity, and we look forward to working together on lots of exciting new ventures. Our next Forum is on 22nd November from 7pm to 9pm, followed by our first Theatre show by Anna Mudeka on 23rd November, who was very popular at last year’s Holt Festival – tickets for this great show are only £7.00 and can be purchased from their box office number on 01362 822194. Last but by no means least, the Centre will once again be hosting the Holt Community Café Christmas Day Meal for the fifth year running! It’s always such huge fun, with a great team of volunteers, entertainment, a superb 2 course full Christmas Turkey meal, singing and even the Queen’s Speech. For planning and catering purposes, it’s essential to book your place, so if you fancy having a fantastic Community Christmas this year, please call 01263 713427 or 07789 220256 to reserve a spot. As ever, we make no charge for the meal, but we are always grateful for donations to enable the important work of the Café to continue throughout the year. Holt Holistic Centre

CBT at Holt Holistic Centre; simple but effective. Holt Holistic Centre progresses from strength to strength as it continues to embrace a wider range of therapies to address diverse needs in the community. I offer talking therapies, which kind of speaks for itself! As an integrative psychotherapist I aim to cover a broad range of techniques, including counselling. One current therapy many people ask about is cognitive behavioural therapy or ‘CBT.’ This is very much in vogue, e.g. used throughout the NHS. CBT is a great way of working efficiently and effectively with people of all ages. Why? Because it is so simple; it’s in large part common sense but put into a system. People like this way of working and it demystifies therapy too. Usually CBT predominantly helps by identifying and weeding out things which aren’t working for a person. It’s not there is this ‘new wonder strategy.’ More so, about the process of allowing clarity. CBT will attend to people’s emotions just as any therapy but views them as an accompaniment or attribute of thinking. When emotions are soothed, we may recognize their ‘thinking accompaniment’ more clearly. Simply: to gain complete understanding of emotional attributes and not be so troubled by them. Much of this comes through validation but also in normalising: ‘it is OK to feel that way.’ It is partly to this which is the aim of CBT. A person becomes eligible as their own therapist and not only be able to ‘self soothe’ but also to have sufficient clarity and personal insight. Whilst this may not make ‘life’ easier, it can help dealing with it. I think this is a wonderful thing, especially when a person can go out and also help those around them by using simple principles. Any person can quickly achieve immense improvements to self-understanding through CBT. It partly depends on willingness and desire to change. It is also based initially around trust and belief in the therapy. Like all effective talking therapy, CBT may involve some difficult realisations and powerful emotional release, as in fear, anger, sadness. The very act of releasing emotions is incredibly important to our total health, especially when accompanied by insight. email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Dear Jo, We would like to thank our wonderful family for the fantastic weekend of our Golden Wedding 4th – 7th October. We were picked up on the Friday morning, by our eldest daughter and her partner and taken to the Methodist church at Holt where we were married for photos. After a visit to the cemetery to put flowers on our parents graves we were taken to the dormy for lunch. After lunch we were taken to ‘Tern’ accommodation on the Kelling Lowes Estate where we were joined by our son and family. In the evening we found our that the adjoining property’s ‘plover’ had been booked for our other daughter and family. A party was held there on the Saturday for 31 family members which included a buffet and a three tier cake. Despite the awful weather on the Sunday, another party had been arranged for friends and neighbours. Although we had seen lots of these people during the year nobody had said a word to us about what was being planned. It must have been the best kept secret of the year! A truly memorable weekend, as we received ÂŁ500 instead of presents which we donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Yours faithfully, Valerie & Trevor Pells

The second of a new monthly- Arts Forum

on Friday 22nd of November from 7.00 – 9.00pm at Holt Community Centre with Carolyn Burn Sessions are held in the lounge bar of Holt Community Centre, and are a focused discussion/ interview, lasting about an hour, with a person involved in some significant way with the arts (in the broadest sense). The next session is with Carolyn Burn, fine arts graduate (NUA); Chair of ‘The Venue’ (the relaunched Holt Community and Arts Centre); Chief Operating Officer of the Community Café. Carolyn will be discussing art as a means of changing society for the better. She is a maker, considering anything creative she undertakes to be an expression of herself as an artist. She has been a musician, trod the boards, worked in marketing and hotels, run her own website design company, and helped various charities over the years. She considers social engagement and food to be her media. There will be time, at the end of the interview, to have a drink, mingle, make new contacts, and share thoughts and ideas.

NORFOLK FACTS

The Norfolk coast runs for nearly 100 miles, from Hopton on Sea to the Wash. The highest point in Norfolk is Beacon Hill near West Runton standing at 338ft above sea level. A LOST WORLD by Leslie Kinsley

BRISTON part 1. As you came up the hill from Melton Constable to Briston there was an open area on the right-hand side that became Eke's Garage. When I was very small, this was where gypsies camped, and I remember one of their horses lying dead in a small hollow there and how scared I felt. Old Mr Eke had his petrol station there later on and made bicycles on the side. He pumped the petrol with a hand crank while wearing a long scarf and with a lit cigarette permanently in his mouth. He would do this till 9.30 at night. He kept a crate of Patterson's beer in his office and would give you a bottle if you asked. Behind the garage, on what is now a new housing estate, there was a slaughter shop. They mostly killed pigs there, generally on a Monday. When the pigs squealed, it really upset passing horses. My first boss had a large horse called Gypsy and I was bringing her down from the field one day when the pigs started up. She dragged me on to the crop beside us. It was cabbages, and she did a lot of damage. My boss was furious with me. The row of council houses just past Eke’s Garage has been there as long as I can remember. Behind ‘Tab’ Brown’s house at the far end of his garden, there used to be a windmill. This was connected to a big metal tank which provided water for the houses. It was locked to stop us youngsters from climbing up there and drowning ourselves. When the water level was low, ‘Tab’ had to set the windmill working to pump more water in. What is now Astley School was my secondary school and I did get a lot of ‘birthdays’ there. You were put on the teacher’s lap and hit with a cane. I have already told you about the lime kiln opposite and the rubbish and night soil thrown in there, but I do wonder what people in the future will think, if they dig it up and find all the brick tunnels. These tunnels were full of wren’s nests. As you went down The Lanes, you came to a coal yard which was owned by Mr Reynolds. He was a Salvation Army man and he followed their creed of kindness. I remember when Elsie and I lived at Thurning and were desperately poor. We had no money for coal and managed by picking up fallen sticks to burn. Mr Reynolds came round and Elsie told him we did not need any coal. He looked in the coal bunker, saw it was empty and put some in. He never gave us a bill for it. He collected his coal from the rail yard at Melton. Each coal merchant had his own heap delivered there. I remember when there was a rail strike and I was sent off in the farm lorry to collect coal from a mine at Desford near Leicester. I went to each railway station locally to leave supplies for delivery by the coal merchants. Behind the coal yard was Balden’s Pit. In those days a pit seemed to attract suicides, particularly of men. We are twinning our toilets! Not something you automatically think off when considering making a twinning arrangement. Why not a picturesque French village, or a Caribbean Island, a place renowned for its good wine and cuisine or else its beautiful scenery or location? But a toilet, seriously? You can well imagine the reaction I received when I said we could send a delegation to pay a visit! Yet why not a toilet, when 2.3 billion people in the world don’t have one? That’s 1in 3 people who don’t have excess to a clean, hygienic, safe and private toilet. Hard to believe in the 21st century! But without a proper toilet and clean water, people can become trapped in a vicious cycle of sickness which can lead to days off work, and lack of pay, or days absent from school, or else payment for medicines can lead people into debt, or even the risk of being bitten by snakes or attacked by wild animals if going to the toilet in the open countryside. This year’s Harvest Appeal which has raised well over £300 will help the organization Toilet Twinning to work with local communities in the poorest areas of the world to provide clean water and sanitation and educate people about basic hygienic practices and change behaviour. Working in 30 countries from Africa, to Asia and South America, over 700,000 lives have been transformed by the simple provision of a basic toilet. “Toilets, taps and training are a lifesaving trio that is helping to flush poverty away.” Once the toilets in the parish church hall and in the church are twinned we will receive certificates, with pictures and the coordinates of our twinned toilet to display in our loo’s. So with a little help from google earth you will be to locate their exact position while sitting on the loo! It is not just churches who are getting involved, but schools, village halls, community centres, youth groups, families and individuals. Council responding to care market pressures

A new report reveals the pressures facing Norfolk’s care market and how the County Council is responding. Norfolk County Council spends £328m per year commissioning care services for around 17,500 people, the vast majority from independent providers – but the care sector faces rising demand, increasing costs and recruitment issues. Even though the most of these services are not run by it, the 2014 care act requires the County Council to “shape a diverse, sustainable and quality” care market. Councillor Bill Borrett, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Public Health and Prevention, said: “We rely on private companies to provide the vast majority of care places in Norfolk and they are facing major demand and cost pressures. That’s why we invested an extra £11.3m in the care market last year. “The Council is also extending initiatives like extra care housing, assistive technology and support for carers, so that people can remain independent for as long as possible and spend less time in formal care, as this is what residents tell us they want to see.” Key findings from the report include:

• Only four new care homes opened, with 16 beds • There are 2,648 nursing care beds and the council “has difficulties making nursing care placements in most areas of Norfolk” • 76.7 per cent of care providers were rated as good or outstanding by the Care Quality Commission – putting Norfolk as 10th out of 11 East of England social services areas • Annual turnover of care jobs is 37 per cent Action being taken by the county council includes: • Investing £29m to develop 2,800 extra care housing units, where people can live independently, with care and support nearby • Norfolk First Response and Norfolk Swift Response, which help people with urgent needs • Reablement, which helps people regain independence following time in hospital • £1.9m on information and advice, to help people stay independent • Work with the NHS on social prescribing, to signpost people to advice and community support • Assistive technology, such as telecare and falls sensors, to help around 3,000 people live at home each year • A direct payments scheme for 2,500 people, enabling them to choose their own care

Sheringham North Councillor Brian Hannah Resigns

Cllr Hannah resigns due to ill health and by-election arrangements announced. Following Cllr Brian Hannah’s resignation from the District Council through ill-health, arrangements will now be made to hold a by-election for the Sheringham North ward on North Norfolk District Council. Cllr Hannah has represented Sheringham on North Norfolk District Council for 22 years, and throughout that time has been a champion of community safety issues on the Council. In paying tribute to Cllr Hannah’s service to the community and District Council, Cllr Sarah Bütikofer Leader of the Council and the Liberal Democrat Group said: “Brian has made a very significant contribution to the life of the District Council over the past 22 years, helping many people in his local community of Sheringham and across the wider District. It has been an honour and a pleasure to work with Brian, and I know many across the Council will miss his presence greatly in the Council Chamber. I know it has been a difficult decision for Brian to stand down from his position as a councillor and I would like to thank him for his years of dedicated service”. Arrangements are now being made to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy for a District Councillor for the Sheringham North ward. Notices of election will be published today (24th October), inviting nominations for the vacancy and if contested a by-election will be held on Thursday 28th November. If the election is contested, poll cards will be delivered to all registered electors within the Sheringham North ward advising them of the by-election including arrangements to request a postal or proxy vote and of the polling station for the ward which is at St Andrew’s Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham.

Hospital charity launches Christmas gift appeal for patients

The annual campaign to deliver more than 1,000 gifts for inpatients at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital on Christmas Day has begun, and this year it is even easier to get involved, thanks to local businesses. th The N&N Hospitals Charity’s Send a Smile with Santa campaign delivers presents donated by the public to patients, both young and old, who are unable to celebrate Christmas at home with their families. This year, there are a number of new drop-off points across the county to make it easier for those who want to help and, for the first time, the charity has an Amazon Wish List and a JustGiving page where people can choose a gift or make a small donation which will be used exclusively to purchase a gift for a patient. Panto dame Sarah the Cook has a three-course role at a Norfolk seaside theatre as it marks a special milestone. Sheringham Little Theatre has been staging its own in-house professional pantos for a decade. And to celebrate, Nick Earnshaw, the man who has directed five of them, is putting on his frock and make-up in a return to the stage as the dame - as well as being director and writer – for the ‘Dick Whittington and His Cat’ show from 7th December to 1st January. Nick was ugly sister Pearl in Cinderella back in 2009 and has since made Nick Earnshaw who is dame, director and Sheringham his second home with regular involvement in the venue’s panto writer of Sheringham’s next panto Dick and summer seasons, as actor and director. Whittington outside the Little Theatre “I am really excited and it’s a dream come true to be dame here,” said the 37year-old self-confessed panto addict who has previously played the Sarah role at Sheffield. “As a child I obsessed with panto. I used to love watching them, but also taping Top of the Pops tunes and working out how to work them into a panto show,” he explained. “When I was at drama school agents would be surprised when they were trying to get me Shakespeare roles, and I was asking about pantos. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “Nick has been a popular and key member of the summer and panto teams so having him play the dame this year seemed a great way of marking our 10th anniversary. Star comedy writer behind stage “radio” show

Classic comedy is being re-tuned to raise funds for Sheringham Little Theatre. Radio Fun is a revue show of sketches, songs, “awful jokes and daft poems” done in the style of a live broadcast BBC radio show. It is penned by a double act of renowned television writers, one of whom now lives in north Norfolk, who have created comic lines for stars ranging from Russ Abbott and Kenny Everett to Cannon and Ball and Frankie Howerd. Paul Minett, from Aylsham, and Brian Leveson from Edgware met as advertising colleagues in London. They wrote comedy sketches for charity Tuning in – Amanda Howell, Libby events as a hobby in the 1980s, before it became their profession. Henshaw, Nona Gray and Sarah Westlake Paul explained: “When I worked at EMI records my boss knew we wrote for rehearse the Radio Fun show fun and asked us to write the lyrics for a comedy mother in law song for Les Dawson, which never happened, but we did do a rock and roll one for Russ Abbot in 1981.” That led to writing sketches too – for acts including The Two Ronnies, Brian Conley and Bobby Davro, as well as TV sitcoms such as Up Pompeii, and My Family and screenplays for films including The Booze Cruise which starred Martin Clunes. He added: “When I moved to Norfolk four years ago I wanted to get involved in amateur dramatics, having done it for 30 years in Kent, so I played dad Arthur in the Winslow Boy at Sheringham Little Theatre this year.“Brian and I had already written our Radio Fun review show for charity in Orpington – so when there was talk of a show for the Little Theatre, we thought this would be ideal,” said Paul. The show, featuring music, sound effects and audience interaction, will be performed by a 16-strong cast from the Little Theatre Players, on 14 – 16 A proper pub! November at 7.30pm nightly. Cromer farmer’s legacy - Cromer Hospital receives over £1million

The generosity of a Norfolk farmer is set to improve health services in North Norfolk after Cromer Hospital received one of its biggest ever donations. The family of Douglas de Bootman have presented a cheque of more than £1m to the N&N Hospitals Charity after the retired farmer left the proceeds of his estate to Cromer Hospital in his will. Mr de Bootman spent his life farming at Pentney, near Swaffham, before retiring and buying Church Farm in Thursford with his wife Janet. After Janet died of cancer in 2010, Mr de Bootman continued to live in Thursford and spent much of his time looking after the grounds of his farm and discovered his love of painting. The 88-year-old died in March 2018 following a short illness. His niece Karen Ballard, from King’s Lynn, said her uncle liked helping others and Mr de Bootman revealed to her a week before his death that he was leaving his legacy to benefit Cromer Hospital. “He was very active in his retirement up until three or four weeks before he died. He had quite a lot of land and used to get up early in the mornings and spent his time taking care of the grounds: cutting the grass, pruning the trees, chopping wood etc. He was very skilled at carpentry, welding, and agricultural engineering. He loved being outside with his Labrador and in his retirement took up painting, which it seems he had a natural skill.” “He was such a quiet, sensitive gentleman. He and Janet enjoyed a few holidays in Scotland. My uncle liked a quiet life, in Thursford he had a few elderly neighbours who he liked to help and vice versa. “We are happy that the money is going to the new cancer unit at Cromer Hospital as cancer affects so many people in many ways.” The sale of Mr de Bootman’s estate has resulted in Cromer Hospital receiving £1,078,519.30 The Trust is currently working with Macmillan Cancer Support to create a state-of-the-art cancer care and support centre, which will increase chemotherapy and treatment space at Cromer Hospital. Fakenham Choral Society – Cantatas and Carols for Advent and Christmas

A festive feast of music awaits as Fakenham Choral Society presents its annual Christmas concert at Fakenham Parish Church on Saturday 14th December at the earlier time of 5.30pm. Led by Musical Director Mark Jones, the choir and orchestra are joined by the exquisite voices of soloists Angela Brun (soprano) and Tom Appleton (bass) as they celebrate Advent and Christmas with selections from Bach’s most celebrated cantatas. In our culture of excess, we could be forgiven for thinking that more is more; in fact, it is very much the case that smaller portions, and better quality, are far better for health long term. The habit of indulging in the ‘buy one get one free’ trap is not a blessing. Fish is not the cheapest ingredient to purchase, but just like meat we should be considering where we buy it, and not just how much can we get. I get my fish from fishmongers locally with good reputations for the best and freshest fish for 2 reasons; I like the personal interaction you get on the High Street, and I like to support local independent businesses. Our buying choices are powerful, and we should use them responsibly if we want to retain our wonderfully diverse High Street. We are blessed in Holt with 2 fresh fishmongers that I definitely don’t want to lose! This is a meal we have once in a while as a special treat. It’s not going to break the bank, but is certainly more than the average weekly meal. Incidentally, fish cooked this way is literally one of the easiest and quickest meals to do; no slaving over a hot stove for hours! It’s also a really impressive meal, with delicate flavours, fresh ingredients and great presentation, and great special occasion or dinner party dish. The trick is not to overcook. Trust the timing, and all will be well! This is also a guilt free way to enjoy chips, counting as one of your 5 a day, with all the indulgence of fries and none of the worry. Push the boat out and serve with a beautiful crisp white wine – my favourite at the moment is Adnams White Burgundy, one of their bestsellers.

Toss all the celeriac and potato fries in olive oil, lemon pepper and salt, coating them well. Put into preheated hot oven (around 190°) for about 30 – 40 mins, checking that they don’t catch and turning halfway through. Meanwhile, steam your broccoli towards the end of the chips cooking – it will need about 10 mins maximum. Prepare your large frying pan for cooking the fish, by swirling a splash of olive oil in the bottom, and adding a handful of chopped dill and some lemon pepper. Once everything else is cooked, heat the pan and add in the fish skin side down. Time it, and cook for 4 minutes, then add in a knob of butter and squeeze in the lemon juice, and carefully flip the fish over. How many people do you know who go hunting for derelict buildings? Who enjoy ďŹ nding their way around buildings where you have to be careful to walk where the beams and joists are if you don’t want to fall down to the oor below? And who have made a speciality of taking photographs of such buildings! One such person is James Kerwin. In his Facebook pages he describes himself as a British ďŹ ne art photographer specialising in hidden & abandoned architecture, travel & location images. And he travels all over the place to ďŹ nd the places he wants for his pictures. James brought his photos to show and accompany his talk to North Norfolk Photographic Society on 16th October – he titles the talk ‘Architecture – Decadence’. He presently is spending most of his time in Lebanon and Georgia and arranges workshops and extended photography tours to these locations. This is unusual stu and, it has to be said, not for the faint-hearted! But however unusual, James’ photos are remarkable. Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. Revised Plans for Holt Railway Station

Back in 2015 a group was established at the request of the Board to examine how the Holt site should be developed to complete the original vision of a country goods yard ďŹ rst planned way back in 2004. The design was presented to the Feb 2017 Members’ Forum at The Links and was well received; however, the price tag was expected to be in the region of ÂŁ3m or so including all the surrounding street works. Back then there was a realistic prospect of obtaining a majority grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund given its museum and educational purpose. However, all that changed in 2018 when the HLF changed their policy on grants and ceased to make large sums available. This led the Board to reappraise what we can do and at the meeting in September they approved a ‘bronze’ scheme for Holt rather than the original ‘gold’ scheme. So, what exactly is ‘bronze’? It is a scheme that delivers virtually the same output for visitors as the original big scheme but not inside a large B&Q style shed, so it can be built incrementally as funds are available. The original scheme would have required a signiďŹ cant lump of cash even to erect the basic building as there are many competing demands on the railway’s ďŹ nances! The ďŹ rst part will be arrival of Reedham Jn signal box in late February. This is still subject to conďŹ rming planning permission with NNDC, but we aren’t expecting any push back as discussions ďŹ rst took place 2 years ago (but we must never assume anything until we have it writing!). The top half will arrive, be repaired and then be erected onto a new concrete foundation. Eventually it will become a “have a goâ€? simulator where visitors can try their hand at Eric Barber (L) and Tony Leach (R) signalling. This will then be joined by a range of other buildings and we are scouring the county for abandoned pw huts that we could dismantle and move to Holt and re-erect next to the box. So, over a period of time the yard area will be ďŹ lled by a range of buildings that allows us to demonstrate all the aspects of railway working. Country’s biggest New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates 21 years

All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier on 1st January 2020 as the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display celebrates its 21st anniversary. The event, which started as a one-off display for the new millennium in 2000, was funded by Cromer Town Council and was located on The Meadow - it was a success in terms of local support, and it raised a few hundred pounds for charity. Former Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond said: “This seemed to be an event that we could do every year, and the following year it attracted a larger crowd. After a few years, the display was moved onto the pier, thanks to North Norfolk District Council's support.” Cromer New Year’s Day Fireworks 2019. R Birnie Since 2000 the event has given out grants totalling over £60,000 to local charities and good causes. “As last year, there will be a torchlight parade from Cromer church before the display. We have a new route and for those who have purchased official merchandise there is a designated area with a grandstand view of the firework display. The annual display attracts more than 10,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day with many spending the day in the town for a breath of fresh air and something to eat and drink before the display is fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm. “A local youngster will be leading the countdown as a thank you for the winning drawing she sent to the display organisers after the 2019 event and we will then start the main show and fill the skies above Cromer with an array of effects to wow the crowds and start the year with a bang. The event is free, however there will be bucket collectors out in force on the day to fundraise for the 2021 display. The bucket collection at the 2019 display raised over a fantastic £10,000. Half of this was given out in grants to local good causes and the balance has been used towards funding the 2019 display. Organisers are still looking for volunteers to bolster their official bucket collectors team. Please contact Cromer town council for more information or register at Cromer museum on New Year’s Day from 2pm. Timeline of events: Prior to the fireworks there will be a fun run along Cromer Promenade at 3pm organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners. Starting from the pier forecourt, the run is open to all ages and abilities, with categories for under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors, and even Fancy Dress. Registration will take place from 2.30pm for a fee of £1. Illuminated merchandise available to buy during the afternoon outside Cromer Museum (next to the Church). Mulled wine will again be served outside the museum, with tea, coffee, and hot soup available in the church from 2pm – 4.30pm. The torchlit procession will set off from Cromer Museum at 4.30 pm, for those who have purchased official torches, to a viewing position on slopes in front of the Hotel de Paris. Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will also be open and other vendors are planning to ensure the crowds who descend on Cromer won’t go hungry. Parking: Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early as possible on New Year’s Day. All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £5 per car for all day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal car park fees will apply on all other car parks. Additional car parking will be publicised in advance of the event. There will be no parking available on Cromer Promenade on New Year’s Day. Please note Cromer Pier will be closed from 8am on New Year’s Day until after the display (approximately 7pm) although Tides Restaurant will be open until 4pm. Between 18 and 20 October Thorpe Market Church held a successful fundraising exhibition and auction of postcard-sized original artwork, donated by professional and amateur artists from across Norfolk and beyond. A number of valuable artworks were donated including a handful of work by budding artists from Happisburgh School. With thanks to the generosity of all the artists submitting, we raised a total amount of £1125.80 towards the cost of new exhibition facilities for the church. A fantastic achievement! We would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped hang the exhibition, bake cakes and invigilate over the three days. Much fun was had by all those who took part, bidding on multiple items or outbidding each other for firm favourites. We still have lots of beautiful postcards remaining so have decided to exhibit them during our popular Snowdrop Sunday events in February 2020 for a flat rate to purchase on the day and take home. We would welcome NEW postcard submissions from artists who wish to take part for the February 2020 exhibition. The same terms apply, as long as the artwork is 6by4 inches we accept any 2 or 3 dimensional medium and any theme, whether it is figurative, abstract or conceptual. Sculptural pieces can be exhibited on plinths.

Ground-breaking ceremony for new Sheringham Leisure Centre

Splash will remain open while the new leisure centre is built on a different part of the site. The new leisure centre is due to open for summer 2021. Working with partners including Sport England, the Council is seeking to increase participation in sport which will contribute to an improvement in social and cultural benefits. Significant milestone as building work begins

The ground has officially been broken to mark the beginning of construction work to build a multi-million-pound leisure centre in Sheringham, expected to be completed in summer 2021. North Norfolk District Councillors joined staff from Metnor Construction and Everyone Active to celebrate the major milestone in the development that will see the existing 31-year old ‘Splash’ replaced with a state-of-the-art facility with lots of new features. The new centre will include a six-lane, 25-metre pool, a 13-metre learner pool with an adjustable depth floor, fitness suite, community rooms, multi-purpose studios, a spin studio and a cafĂŠ. The design has been progressed with the facility’s accessibility in mind and incorporates eleven dedicated accessible car parking spaces close to the building entrance, level access into the building through the main reception, automatic entry doors within the lobby area and accessible changing rooms. On the ground floor, a dedicated ‘Changing Places’ facility will be provided which offers more space than standard accessible changing spaces and equipment including a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist. A ‘pool pod’, a type of swimming pool lift, will be available for safe and dignified entry into the swimming pool, offering greater independence for people with a wide range of mobility difficulties. A moving floor on the smaller pool will allow the water depth to be changed for different activities and user groups such as swimming lessons, water confidence and toddler sessions and aqua fit exercise classes. A colourful splash pad and learner pool for children to enjoy and where they can improve their confidence in the water has also been included in the design, and a range of portable, fun equipment such as inflatables will be offered during timetabled sessions. MY NORFOLK, MY HOLT' – with Iain Wilson Thursday 14th November 11.00am – 12.00 noon

The next interview, in the ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ series, at Holt Library, is on November the 14th with Iain Wilson (owner of Byfords, The Pigs and The Ffolks Arms amongst other things), between 11.00 and 12.00 noon. Iain was born in Paisley, Scotland and lived there for 11 years. He was one of four children, having three sisters. The family then lived in Torquay for about 7 years, at which time Iain went to, what was then, Leicester Polytechnic to study Business Admin. He says this was something of a stop-gap, giving him thinking time. After Uni he worked for M&S for about 2 years, and for 5 years for his sister at the Old Brewery House, Reepham, meeting his wife, Clair, in his final year. He and his wife then looked for a business to buy, whilst working part-time. They found Byfords (then called ‘Pages’) which wasn’t actually for sale, but in talking to the owner found he was willing to sell, and realised that it fitted their plans perfectly. Why Norfolk? Iain says it has a good balance of everything they were looking for. He loved and loves the fact that it is protected by poor roads, that it is not over exploited or commercialised, and doesn’t come with all the hassle of London. It is not extreme and has lovely countryside and a beautiful coastline. Iain is a leading light in the re-vamped Chamber of Trade, now called ‘Love Holt’, through which he hopes to help shape the town to what is required within a very different on line shopping environment and get to the very root of what makes a great community. He has recently been elected to the Town Council. He lived in the town for about 10 years (now lives in Sheringham), traded at Byfords since Sept 2000, currently directs / owns / part owns 7 businesses turning over £12m and employing 250 staff, has 4 children, 3 of which go to Greshams, with the oldest leaving home at 16 to pursue a career in women’s football. These sessions are about valuing the contributions of individuals to the life of the community, past and present; about exploring Holt from different perspectives. Participants talk about the Holt and Norfolk they know and love, past and present; how it was when they first knew it, and how it is now, both from a personal and a professional point of view. That most iconic word.

It is humbling for me to think that I was thirty years old before I heard that most iconic word in the Norfolk dialect, "'bour", expressed correctly and singular that I heard it from a Romany in a pub in Essex. Cheddar had a business in Enfield, Middlesex but he was also a "gryengro" (Romani for horse trader) and kept his beloved horses not far from The Wheatsheaf pub on The Crooked Mile at Waltham Abbey in Essex. It was there that I used to encounter him. Raising his glass of McMullens one evening, he said "That's good beer, 'bour" in a knowing sort of way. I took the cue that it was the Norfolk word and returned the pronunciation as "bore". Cheddar laughed as well he might. He had only heard the word from Norfolk countrymen, when horse trading, whilst I, a Norwich born chap, had only seen it in print where it is spelt erroneously as "bor". It was years after that that I heard from a Norfolk born colleague that the full form of the word is "neighbour" and that he remembered it used in full. A lady might say to someone: "Are you alright, neighbour?". So, it is an easy step to drop the "neigh" and use the second syllable '"bour" ("buh" in effect) which is how Cheddar pronounced it. This conclusion got expert confirmation. The late Adrian Bell, much loved writer of works often related to Norfolk and country life, came to East Anglia to farm, but prior to that had been the crosswords expert for The Times. Like Cheddar, he heard the word "'bour" from country folk and when he saw it reduced in print to "bor" addressed the matter in an article. "Bor", he said, suggested pigs or perhaps the bore in a pipe. The word should be pronounced "half-way between a stutter and a bark as 'buh'", said the wordsmith. When the matter of pronunciation is solved there is still that confusion with the word "boy" often used as an affectionate form of address: "Are you alright boy Dick?”. Boy is given as a synonym for 'bour on dialect mugs, for example. But they are quite distinct, in fact. I put this matter to Lennie King of Hindolveston, able octogenarian, Norfolk born and bred. He gave me a wonderful off-the-cuff example of two passed Norfolk workmen working in tandem. One might say: "Cop a hold a that pole, buh." He threw up his arms in mock horror at "boy" used in this context where it would constitute the ultimate insult! Neighbour is an old English word meaning neighbour or sworn friend and as such, it, and its Norfolk diminutive, has a spiritual significance, which must not be lost sight of.

Mental health - major new investments and transformation work announced

Millions of pounds of investment into mental health support and care - and some major improvements in services - have been announced in Norfolk and Waveney. It’s all aimed at helping people to prevent mental ill health, or to bolster support that is available when people do suffer an illness. There will be more money for crisis services for adults, more staff in acute (physical health) hospitals and more staff who specialise in helping children and young people, plus workforce training to support staff and enhance their skills. Dr Tony Palframan chairs the Norfolk and Waveney Health and Care Partnership (STP) Mental Health Forum. He said: “This is great news for service users, families and carers in Norfolk and Waveney. “Earlier this year we launched our new Norfolk and Waveney strategies for both adults’ and children’s mental health, and we are working alongside service users to deliver them. These announcements demonstrate we are beginning to make real progress.” Jonathan Warren, Chief Executive of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT), said: “We welcome this additional investment in mental health services in Norfolk and Waveney. “We are working with our staff, service users, carers and families and other partners, such as GPs, commissioners, local authorities and the voluntary sector, to prevent mental ill health from developing in the first place and to provide effective early intervention when it does.” Children’s and Young People’s Services Norfolk and Waveney has been awarded in excess of £700,000 in funding for four important areas of development for children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing support. This extra funding complements changes we are making across our system to the way we support the mental health and wellbeing of 0 to 25 year olds: • Four new Children & Young People’s Wellbeing Practitioners (CWPs), to add to the existing two cohorts of CWPs in our system • Trailblazer funding from NHS England for two Mental Health Support Teams to provide enhanced targeted support to CYP, families and staff in education settings. • The University of East Anglia submitted a successful bid to deliver accredited training for eight new Emotional Mental Health Practitioners who will be recruited to the two Mental Health Support Teams. This enables specialist training to be delivered locally and build local training capacity. • Development funding to work up a larger bid to embed trauma informed practice across Norfolk & Waveney These announcements are in addition to the ongoing development of a new system wide framework and approach for children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing support, which is currently being co-designed with the input from professionals, operational staff, system partners, children, young people and families. Adult Mental Health Services The Norfolk and Waveney’s Health and Care Partnership (STP) has won national funding to improve services and support the priorities established in Norfolk and Waveney’s Adult Mental Health Strategy, launched earlier in 2019. The funding will boost mental health services in the following areas: • Over £1.9m in 2019-21 to increase and bolster mental health liaison services at both the James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust, bringing both hospitals in line with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to provide ‘Core 24’ standards for patients with mental health needs. Core 24 is a standard within hospitals dedicated to providing 24 hours, 7 days a week mental health support at hospitals by recruiting staff that are focused on a patient’s mental health needs – this can be a mix of liaison psychiatrists, mental health nurses, therapists and administrative staff. • £1.1m over two years to increase staffing levels across Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation NHS Trust’s Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams, focusing on developing 7-day, 24-hour provision across Norfolk and Waveney. • £540k over two years to develop a ‘Crisis House’ service located centrally in Norfolk, aimed at enabling people to access support to

prevent a mental health hospital admission and support a rapid return to their everyday living. This project is being prioritised to ensure a Crisis House can be established and start benefitting local people rapidly. (This is in addition to the Community Wellbeing Hub being planned at Churchman House in Norwich, expected to open in 2020.) • £177k of non-recurrent funding in 19-20 to further develop perinatal mental health services locally, building on the Community Perinatal Mental Health Service launched in 2017. The funding will focus on developing a cross-agency triage system to stream patients into appropriate mental health services that meet their needs, as well as continuing outreach work through local partners Get Me Out The Four Walls. • NSFT has also reopened Yare Ward at its Hellesdon site, a 16-bed acute ward that will be used as an assessment and inpatient unit, and allow patients to receive care closer to their homes and families. • Beds on Yare are being opened gradually to allow staff to get up to speed, and it is expected to have all 16 in operation very soon. The new team supporting the ward includes a psychiatrist, junior doctor, ward manager, nurses, assistant practitioners, clinical support workers, an art therapist, activity co-ordinator and occupational therapist. They also have a discharge co-ordinator working with them, which will speed up assessments so service users get the treatment they need as soon as possible. Local NHS commissioners will continue to fund these developments after the funding from NHS England has been spent. New Personality Disorder pathway Intensive training is also underway at Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust to facilitate the roll-out of the personality disorder pathway across Central Norfolk from October onwards. This is the result of the development of NSFT’s personality disorder strategy and working with commissioners to implement a pathway for people with personality problems locally. Mental health commissioners have agreed an investment of just over £800,000 to develop a pathway, initially covering the Central Norfolk area. Early implementation will take place principally in Norwich and will involve NSFT’s three city community mental health teams, Central Norfolk CRHT, and Thurne Ward and Waveney Ward at Hellesdon Hospital.

Medieval Marriage

she was entitled to divorce him. If a husband kept a concubine, his wife was allowed to punch her.

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr ‘The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there’; so said L P Hartley as the opening lines of his novel ‘The Go-Between’.

After the Norman invasion things got worse.

Under the French invaders, a wife became a ‘sort of infant’ and her legal identity ceased to exist. A husband and wife on marriage became one person and the wife’s property was surrendered to the husband. This included her clothes; and so, the husband would usually give his wife her clothes by his Will; otherwise, presumably, if he died, she would quite literally walk away naked.

I recently heard a presentation which included a run-through of English marriage and divorce laws through the ages. It amused me; and thought it might amuse you. It is truly alien territory.

In the early 7th century, under the code of Ethelbert, the legal penalty, if a man ‘took a maiden by force’, was that he had to pay her guardian (not her) 50 shillings (i.e. £2.50 in decimal money), and afterwards he could buy from the guardian his consent to marry her. Presumably the former-maiden’s value would have been much diminished and it would have been an easy solution for the men. The cost of consent would be 20 shillings (£1) if she was betrothed to another man. We do not know the cost if she wasn’t betrothed. There was a 35 shilling (£1.75) refund if the woman was ‘returned’.

The Welsh laws of the same era stated that the grounds for divorce were leprosy, impotence and bad breath (only one of the three was necessary). There was recognition too of the ‘seven year itch’. On divorce after seven years the money in the marriage was split equally. Before the 7 years the division depended on the woman’s status by birth (regardless of the actual size of the common pool of matrimonial property). This presumably meant it was financially risky for a man to marry a posh but poor young woman – much better for him to find a rich but vulgar girl!

Before the arrival of the Normans, if a woman found her husband with another woman, she was entitled to payment of six score pence (about 46p, I calculate) the first time; £1 the second time; and, on the third time

Land and real property passed down the male blood-line, so that a widow and daughters would be left destitute without a living male protector. This explains Mrs Bennet’s desperation to hunt down husbands for her five daughters in ‘Pride and Prejudice’. True love didn’t come into it.

And so the matrimonial property dark ages continued until the Victorians introduced the Married Women’s Property Acts. There were four of these from 1870 to 1907 and the final one, shockingly, was as late as 1964. Women became legal entities in their own right, could keep their earnings and own property.

New reports show children's services progress

Norfolk’s care for vulnerable children is performing well and is better than the national average in key areas, new reports reveal. The news comes as the county council’s cabinet considers three reports on how adoption, fostering and children’s homes are performing. Councillor John Fisher, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “We want to make a real, positive difference to the lives of our most vulnerable children and these reports show there is much to celebrate. “Our adoption and fostering services and our children’s homes are some of the best in the country. We’re ambitious to make further improvements and I’m confident that we’re well-placed to do this.” The adoption service – rated as outstanding by Ofsted last year – continues to perform well and placed 67 children with adoptive families last year: •A better than average performance for moving children from care into adoptive families (337 days, compared to a national average of 420) •More children are moved from care and into adoption within six months than the national average (60 per cent in Norfolk, 56 per cent nationally) The fostering service is also performing well – highlights include: •The service is supporting 385 children in our care - a greater proportion of those who are looked after •There are 321 approved foster carers, exceeding recruitment targets •25 fostering ambassadors are boosting recruitment The council runs nine children’s homes – highlights include: •Eight homes are classed as good or outstanding by Ofsted – a higher proportion than the national average (89 per cent, compared to 80 per cent nationally) •This has been instrumental in securing significant additional DfE funding, to implement the No Wrong Door Model of support •The council also runs self-contained supported flats, to help 16 and 17-year-olds prepare for independent living The reports were considered when cabinet met on Monday, 4 November. Christmas shoppers invited to support Giving Tree appeal for children in care

Christmas shoppers in Norwich are being given the opportunity to get into the festive spirit by buying a book for a child in care. Norfolk County Council and Waterstones have teamed up again to launch the Giving Tree appeal. Now in its thirteenth year, this popular seasonal project aims to bring joy to the county’s looked after children. The tree, which can be found in the Castle Street branch of Waterstones in Norwich, is decorated with dozens of tags, each representing a child and the book they would like to receive this Christmas. Customers wishing to support the appeal can buy the books which will be wrapped and sent to the children in time for Christmas. Cllr John Fisher, cabinet member for children’s services at Norfolk County Council, said: “Every year this appeal shows the generosity of Norfolk shoppers as they give something back each Christmas. Children in care have often experienced a great deal of adversity in their young lives and this appeal is a great way to support them this Christmas." Last year’s appeal saw a record-breaking response with over 400 books bought, wrapped and delivered to children in care across Norfolk. Holt WI October Meeting

Backgammon Summer Open Knock-out

The 2019 Summer Open Knock-out, hosted by the North Norfolk Backgammon Circle, was held at Gresham Village Hall and drew the horrible number of 9 players – so Cedric Lytton dropped out (but three competitors kindly let him play one game for them in their matches to 9 points with cubes). Martyn Guest (Norwich) won the final against Ivan Vorlicek (Aylsham), having just edged a titanic semi-final struggle against Chris March (Briston) which went to 13 games and double match point. Colin Sherriff (Blakeney) won the consolation event for first-round losers, beating Arthur Sinicola (Fakenham) in their own final.

From Condoms to Coffins was the intriguing title of the talk given by Auctioneer Martin Fox MBE to Holt WI at the October meeting. The title came from two occasions; one was when Martin was given 2 large boxes marked Soap, only to discover at the auction that they actually contained condoms and the other when he was listing builder’s equipment. The builder was also an undertaker and there were several coffins in a dimly lit back room. It was all rather creepy and looking in on the top one Martin’s imagination went into overdrive and he felt sure there was something in it and he made a quick exit. Going back with others from the auction house, he was horrified to find a hand move out from the coffin. One of his colleagues had played a trick on him. This was an amusing and highly entertaining talk, and everyone enjoyed it immensely Mr. Fox has travelled all over the world with his work and had so many lively anecdotes to relate. He also gave us a sample of that rapid quick-fire auctioneering for cattle. His charity auctions have helped raise over £350.000 over the years. On Thursday the president and another committee member were invited to lunch by Duncan Baker, to be presented with a cheque for £150 to Holt WI for their input at the 40’s weekend. Duncan was a delightful host and the cheque was gratefully received. On 31st October a Brass Tray event is being held at Holt Community Centre. Other local WI’s are invited and there is a quiz and lovely cakes. New members are always welcome to join this group where they can make friends and enjoy interesting speakers, coffee mornings and other events. Holt WI meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at Holt Community centre at 2pm. It ends at 4 pm. The next meeting is on Wednesday 20th November, when it is the AGM. There will be a bring and share lunch beforehand, starting at 12.30.

Art in the Making

John Patchett is a well-known East Anglian artist, whose pastel paintings are much sought after, both in England and abroad. John was born in Deal, Kent in 1946 and attended Grimsby School of Art, Kingston-upon-Thames College of Art and Brighton College of Art, before settling in Australia where he lived for 19 years. In 1994, he returned to the UK, and settled in East Anglia where he has easy access to some of his favourite locations. ‘Whilst in Holt and as the day was sunny, I decide to set up my easel on the High Street and paint a view which literally had me transfixed due to the amazing light at the time.’ The painting will feature in a Christmas exhibition entitled " Elements" at The Gallery, Lees Yard, in Holt.

Our Coffee morning was, I think, a very happy occasion. The Banana Competition was a success - Do bananas float? How many bananas do we eat in the UK in a year? Lots of delicious Fairtrade coffee and homemade cakes. Tombola (a prize every time) and a Fairtrade Stall. Many thanks to Sainsburys and Tesco for their support. The profits of almost £200, will go to the Fairtrade charity, Traidcraft Exchange., helping people like vegetable farmers Patrick and Featy, in Kenya "We barely had enough to feed the family, and four of our children had to drop out of school.". But with Traidcraft Exchange's help, “I’m doing single crop planting. I've also learned about weather forecasting. Now I can plant comfortably when there will be rain."
