Holt Country Park Calendar Now Available to Buy

Ideal stocking filler! North Norfolk District Council is delighted to announce that its Holt Country Park calendar featuring visitors’ winning images is now on sale, following the year-long competition. The calendar consists of photos taken by visitors to the Green Flag award-winning park over the last year and each month features a winning photographer’s image together with other selected images that show off the beauty of the Park and how people enjoy it throughout the seasons. You can now purchase the calendar for just £5 from the park itself, or can be collected at the park after an online purchase on the Council’s website. For those who would like to get their copy delivered, this can also be done online after a small postage fee of £1.50. The calendar would make a fantastic Christmas present for those with a love of the great outdoors. Proceeds from the calendar will be used to help support the management and upkeep of Holt Country Park so that it may be enjoyed for many years to come. Thank you to all those who entered the competition and helped make this possible. Dear Readers Two items about which it is important for you and our local councils to have a say. Review of Norfolk County Council Divisions: Since I circulated information to our local councils the closing date has fortunately been extended to 13 January 2020. In brief the independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking for your views on the electoral review of Norfolk County Council. The review will result in new divisional boundaries across the council. This is your opportunity to say where you think your division boundary should be; to note where people in your area go to access local facilities; to tell the commission which areas you identify with as your local community. If you do not have your say others will - which is why these following dates are important: When the consultation closes on 13 January 2020 consideration will be given to all representations made during this consultation. Draft recommendations should be published in May 2020. The LGBC will then hold a further period of consultation on the draft recommendations. Final recommendations are expected to be published in September 2020. The new electoral arrangements will come into effect at the local elections in 2021 and will last for years so have your say and check on the draft submissions. Norfolk's Council Tax: Have your say before 10 December on the council tax you will be paying and on what it will be spent. Go to www.norfolk.gov.uk/budget<http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/budget> and have your say. The council is proposing a rise of 3.99% for 2020/21 i.e. 1.99% for general services and 2% for adult social care. (If not familiar with computers ask for assistance at the library or wait for postal information). Grant Funding for Local Projects and Organisations

Each year Holt Town Council sets aside a small amount of money to support local projects and organisations in Holt. The funding is ring fenced for local organisations which benefit the community of Holt. The second round of funding for 2019 is now open for applications. News from The Venue

We had a great start to the new CHAT café, with plenty of people turning up to enjoy home baked goodies from the Holt Community Café Team, and lovely company in a relaxed environment. It’s wonderful to have the centre open in this way, with the ability to just drop in and see who is there, grab a cup of coffee and a cheeky piece of cake, and see what’s going on at the Venue. Our vision is to see a café every day at the Centre as we move forward, so this is a great start. Do come and see us on a Monday morning from 9am to 12pm. If you missed the start of the New Expressionists Art Group, there’s still time to join us! We meet every Friday in the Art Studios at the back of the building from 11am to 1pm, with Beverley Scott leading us through an exciting journey of fun artistic discovery. Coming up on 12th December we are so pleased to announce our first Community Christmas Evening from 6pm, with many contributors entertaining us during a free evening of celebration of all things Christmas, including music, drama and poetry by residents and organisations of all ages from the Town. We hope that this will be an annual event, where we can enjoy a free evening of festive fun. As ever, there will be delicious nibbles during the interval courtesy of the Community Café, and the bar will be open, so come and join us for some informal fun and see your friends perform! I’m sure you will have seen the adverts for our most exciting project to date starting in February next year, The Great Holt Bake Off! Inspired by the eponymous TV series, we are hoping to see many of you baking your heads off all in the name of local Charities, and coming together at the Centre to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea, amazing raffles, live judging and friendly competition. We have some incredible sponsorship from our amazing local traders, helping the competition to be as thrilling as possible. Get your forms in before 21st December to be able to join in – it’s going to be so much fun! People are signing up for Christmas Day, so if you haven’t yet done so, give us a call to reserve your place. If you would like to do something different on Christmas Day this year, why not consider joining the team who help to deliver this great day to our local residents? We have loads of different jobs that you can do, and it is genuinely great fun, as well as being a really wonderful way to give a little something back to the community. Lastly, a quick heads up about New Year’s Eve – we have an awesome Party planned for the town at the Centre, sponsored by Adnams and Sanders Coaches, and featuring the amazing French Kriss. Tickets are only £10, with free Prosecco at Midnight and a coach to take you home, it’s going to be THE New Years Eve Party to be at! Tickets are available soon, so book in quick! Car Parking on Grass Verges

Dear Jo, Our roadside grass verges are provided by the County Council as an environmental amenity, like public parks, but some motorists in Holt use them as car parks, subordinating the public amenity to an assumed right to park their cars on the grass. They obstruct the council mower in the summer, churn up the verges into muddy tracks in winter and obstruct other drivers’ visibility at the junctions of Hempstead Road / Charles Road and Grove Lane / Meadow Close. A different problem arises at the entrance to Elizabeth Crescent, where cars churn up the greens because there is no paved vehicular access to the houses. From three phone calls to the three relevant local authorities I learned that the mowing is paid for from council tax. The council cannot charge the car owners the of reseeding and reinstating the worn-out verges; this work would also be paid from public funds but it is not being done because of the constant car parking. The District Council is responsible for traffic wardens policing car parking but the wardens in North Norfolk are provided by King’s Lynn Borough Council and they cannot impose fixed penalties for parking on grass verges, nor even obstructive parking, unless the District Council, as the parking authority, paints double yellow lines on the road at those locations. Car parking on grass verges is a longstanding, perennial problem and, in my

¡ Established Norfolk event held on land where local wildfowlers have shot clays for over one hundred years. ¡ These much-needed funds will go towards educating children in the UK about what they should do if they ever feel unsafe. On a beautiful summer’s day earlier this year, the annual Cley Charity Clay Pigeon Shoot took place at Old Rectory Farm in Cley, home to Tony Blount and his family. His daughter Alice Atkinson arranged the day alongside Sarah Lambley, Community Fundraising Manager for Norfolk NSPCC. The day was run entirely by local volunteers, ranging in age from 8 to 80! Marquees, tables and chairs were kindly loaned by The Wells Carnival committee and many local supporters and friends rallied round donating hay bales to sit on, cakes to eat and even a wood ďŹ red pizza oven! Huge thanks to so many local volunteers, Bernard Bishop retired Norfolk Wildlife Trust warden and the Blakeney Wildfowlers to mention just a few. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and entered into the sporting spirit of things – never forgetting the invaluable work the NSPCC are doing to safeguard our children. “It can be diďŹƒcult for teachers and parents to know how to tackle this sensitive but incredibly important subject. Through our ‘Speak Out. Stay Safe’ programme we talk to children about the dierent types of abuse and let them know there are people out there who can help them.â€? Ambitious net zero carbon target proposed for Norfolk

Ambitious net zero carbon target proposed for Norfolk An ambitious date of 2030 for Norfolk to achieve net zero carbon emissions has been proposed as part of a new and far-reaching environment policy for the County Council. A cross party group was set up in May 2019 to look closely at the key issues and actions needed to help the county council understand and address its environmental impacts from the buildings the authority uses, the way people travel, and how the land owned by the Council is used. Over recent months the four-member working group heard from representatives of a range of organisations including Extinction Rebellion, the Broads Authority, the UEA and the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership. A set of proposals are now available for members of the Infrastructure and Development Select Committee to discuss at their meeting on Wednesday, 13 November. If agreed, the policy would then be considered for adoption by Full Council on 25 November. Cllr Barry Stone, Chair of Infrastructure and Development Select Committee, said: “We are living with climate change and I’m keen to see the authority on the right track to reducing the environmental impact of the essential services we run. We need to focus on the things we have influence over to ensure improvements are within our gift. I believe the ambitious 2030 net zero carbon emission target is the right way to go and would set us on a course well ahead of the government’s 2050 target.” Cllr Andy Grant, Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member for Environment & Waste, said: “This paper is a first, but important step. We want to take action as the need for us all to reduce our impact on the planet is not in doubt. I look forward to the county council working alongside partners across the county to bring about positive change. “If the policy is adopted, we would then take steps to do detailed work to identify actions on the ground to help reduce our environmental impact.”

BRISTON part 2. We are very lucky in Melton Constable and Briston because unlike other villages we still have decent shops. As well as the welcome return of the Co-op in each village which provides Post Office, food and drink we have the wonderful Graves family. Where their butchery, bakery, grocery, hot deli, greengrocers and newsagents now stands, is where the main shopping centre of Briston was situated. Pilch was the butcher then and his son went off to Norwich and founded the sports shop there. It was an institution long before the national chains took over. It is now part of Jarrolds. There was a grocer next, run by Mr Glissold. He was one of the unhappy men who ended his life in Balden’s pit. There were some cottages next and the end one was occupied by a Mr Crowe. He was always dressed very smartly and worked at Stody Hall. I think he must have been a butler or something. The Oddfellows Hall came next which was used as our village hall then and beyond that was the Post Office. There were two brothers called Howe working here. They lived at a bungalow by Briston crossroads. ‘Snap’ Hewitt kept the Chequers pub and I particularly remember the ‘cubby hole’ there at the back of his premises where he would serve us boys. It was against the law, but we never got found out. ‘Snap’s’ Dad, George, had a coal business. Everyone who ran a pub seemed to have another source of income. I don’t think people had enough money to spend much on beer. Sid Reynolds had a petrol pump on the road in front of his bungalow, and if you wanted fuel, you rang a bell and he came across from his bicycle shop opposite to serve it. Sid Dack worked in the cycle shop with Sid Reynolds but they both loved music. Above the cycles was a room full of instruments such as drums and a piano accordion. They spent ages up there playing, much to the annoyance of the neighbours. Sid’s son Roger was in a five-piece band called The Serenaders which did perform on television. The second Macmillan Coffee Morning to be held at North Creake Village Hall took place on Friday 27th September. GENERAL ELECTION 2019

The Christmas lights are already on as we hurtle once again to the end of another cycle. The new church year, beginning with Advent, will soon be upon us. But first we keep the feast of Christ the King on the final Sunday of the church calendar, which seems like a good way to end, reminding us that ultimately all shall be well; the One who took on flesh as the humble babe of Bethlehem will come again as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. It is reassuring to consider a perfect higher power above those earthly powers which, especially of late, can fall so far short of an ideal model of authority. The word ‘Christ’ literally means ‘anointed’ and Her Majesty the Queen, the only anointed reigning monarch, embodies this idea of transcendent immutable authority existing above the rather less satisfactory political mêlée. Thank God for her, but what of those in authority under her? Some of you might share the frustration of a priest friend of mine who feels he has no other option than to spoil his ballot paper, so exasperated is he by some leaders of the political parties. But it is important to remember that while the Kingdom of Heaven is continually breaking into our world below, it has not yet fully come. Earthly powers are flawed and the perfect political party is unlikely to exist for most of us. We might not find the political establishment much more palatable than the early church found the Romans, but it is arguable that it remains our Christian duty to vote. St Augustine tells us that we can identify the character of a people by determining what they love. Scripture tells us that our vision of the good life should be characterised by love for God and neighbour. In a democracy we not only yield to authority, we wield it, and we wield it through voting. Our participation is a way of communicating to our neighbours that we care about their wellbeing. There is no point in being so heavenly minded that we are of no earthly use, but keeping an eye on the big cosmic picture of Christ as King might help us to judge how our vote might best bring the Kingdom of Heaven to earth, a kingdom of justice, peace, concern for the needy and vulnerable, the punishment of vice and the promotion of good. Christ taught us to submit to the authority of earthly powers. In our country that authority comes from the electorate, so may God grant us all wisdom to know how to vote and grace to submit to whatever the democratic mandate effects in the months to come, and may he bless and guide all of our candidates who are standing at a time when it would be easier to leave the fray. Ofsted has praised Norfolk’s handing of child safeguarding calls and referrals, after a two-day visit to the County Council. The inspectorate carried out a focused visit looking at how the council responds to calls about the welfare of children and young people – the so called “front door�. Ofsted said that the front door had been “transformed� since their last visit in November 2017 and that information sharing, analysis and recording had significantly improved. The quality of decision making was “consistently strong� and there had been a reduction in inappropriate referrals and assessments. Inspectors said that the level of improvement achieved “provided tangible evidence of the impact of senior leaders on social work practice at the front door.� Inspectors also found that the front door response to domestic abuse is well developed and increasingly effective and said the multi-agency child exploitation and missing team is “equally effective�. Ofsted said there was more work to do when cases leave the front door, with the timeliness and quality of assessments identified as an area for further work, largely because of continuing recruitment challenges. Cllr John Fisher, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council, said: “Ofsted has recognised the brilliant work of our children’s advice and duty service and how we have transformed how we take calls and respond to concerns about children and young people. “This success is down to the huge commitment of our staff and partners in the police and health services – we are working together more effectively than ever before, and this is helping to ensure families do not receive unnecessary social work assessments. “We’re now changing how our frontline teams work, so that social workers can spend more time with children and young people. As a council we’re absolutely committed to getting the right support to families, which is why we’re investing in recruiting more staff and further transforming how we work.�

Avoiding Christmas Stress ‘Christmas’ and ‘stress’ seem to go hand in hand for many people, but does it have to? Here are a few tips to try, to help you enjoy a more relaxed holiday. • If you’re fortunate enough to have your family and friends around you at this time it can be helpful to have a loose structure to the day which will just help everything to run more smoothly. • If you are the person entertaining, rather than being entertained, make sure that you have a little bit of time and space to yourself at some point. This will help you stay calm. • We often bring people together over the festive period who would not ordinarily spend very much time in each other’s company. That doesn’t always go well, but just acknowledge the good parts of the day – don’t dwell on the bad. • If you’re prone to going heavy on the alcohol over the festive period, try to conjure up a little compassion for your future self - the one that wakes up surrounded by the detritus of Christmas with a thumping headache and aversion to daylight! • If you’re spending Christmas on your own, be kind to yourself and make it special in whatever way you can. There may be things going on in your local community that you could take part in on the day. Some forward planning and including time outdoors, if at all possible, will help to make the day a good one. • If you’ve lost anyone dear to you in the past year, Christmas can be a particularly poignant time and the reality of them not being with you as usual can be very hard to bear. It can help a little if you aim to do things differently in some way. Perhaps eat in a different room, create new and different memories of the day. But at the same time, it is normal and healthy to grieve and to reminisce about the person you have lost. And remember, it doesn’t need to be perfect, only good enough for everyone to relax and enjoy. Merry Christmas!

A BUSY AFTERNOON FOR WEYBOURNE WI

It was a busy afternoon for Weybourne WI, on Wednesday, 6th November. The meeting began with an informative talk by Caroline Jarrold, who is a 7th generation member of the family who founded the Jarrold company, which will celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2020. Caroline is based at St James Mill in Norwich and holds the posts of Community Affairs Adviser and Secretary of the John Jarrold Trust. Caroline told us about the history of the company, from when it was started by John Jarrold in 1770, up until the present day. Over the years a succession of family members has taken the company from strength to strength and it continues to develop and expand. Caroline’s talk was accompanied by numerous slides, which illustrated the changes that have taken place. In the 1980s and 90s there was massive investment in printing and publishing and various magazines, books, catalogues, etc., were all produced by Jarrold. However, the majority shareholding of the printing business was sold in the early 2000s and investment was made in other areas including retail, training, security, cleaning services and property development. The John Jarrold Trust is a charity which benefits people in Norfolk and distributes around £80,000 per year. In 2017, the Jarrold Department Store began a new initiative to support three charities including Each, The Big C and the Prince’s Trust. A vote of thanks was given by Maggie Parker. The AGM then took place and various reports were presented and accepted, before elections were held. The Committee members and President (Celia Howe) were all unanimously re-elected. Gwyneth Sibilia thanked the Committee for their hard work throughout the past year. The afternoon concluded with tea and homemade biscuits.

There were no ghouls or ghosties, witches or warlocks at Holt Community Centre on Halloween Instead, the ladies of Holt WI hosted the annual Brass Tray Quiz for the Nor Easter group. 7 teams from North Norfolk came along to answer questions ranging from ‘how long is the Norfolk coast line when the tide is in ’ to ‘ with whom did Christopher Robin go down with…’ and the author; so some quite tricky, while others were easy! In the interval, while the teams filled in the sheets of questions on their tables, Holt ladies served them with tea and coffee and a selection of delicious homemade cakes. Once papers were handed in and checked, it was rather embarrassing to find that Holt came last ; the winners being the team from Mundesley who were clearly very knowledgeable. Warning after supermarket handbag thefts

Police in north Norfolk are urging shoppers to be vigilant after handbags were stolen from shopping trolleys. It follows two incidents reported on Wednesday 13 November at supermarkets in Stalham and Cromer. The first incident happened at Tesco in Stalham shortly after 2pm when the victim, a woman in her 80s, noticed her handbag and shopping bag had been stolen from her trolley while she had her back turned. The handbag was later found by supermarket staff and nothing was missing. The second incident happened at Morrisons in Cromer at about 3.50pm when a purse was stolen from a carrier bag, hung over a trolley. Shoppers are urged to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to store security.

Internationally renowned artists as well as artists new to the scheme take part each year and for many, it oers the opportunity to join a wider community of Stephen Parry in his Studio artists which helps to bring their work to new and diverse audiences, opening up discussions about their practice. Artist Andy Jarrett said: “Norfolk Open Studio's is one of my highlights of the year, it’s something very special and is really worth celebrating. “For me it’s a brilliant opportunity to showcase my sculptural work to a vast and diverse audience, I have large numbers visitors from all over the county and further aďŹ eld who come to see and buy my work, they often have commission ideas they want to explore as well, so it’s become an important part of my yearly income which is wonderful. “This is only a small part of what Norfolk Open Studios oers, it’s also a nourishing chance to meet the wider artistic community, to make friends and share ideas, as artists we often work in isolation, so Open Studios is highly important.â€? One visitor to this year’s event said: “I really enjoyed the opportunity to get out and about and the freedom to just explore the dierent types of studios and speak to the artists, understanding and appreciating their approaches.â€?

Be part of Norfolk Open Studios 2020 Applications are set to open for artists from across Norfolk to take part in one of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country. The award-winning Norfolk Open Studios, now in its 26th year, will run from Saturday 23 May to Sunday 7 June. Each year hundreds of artists take part in the scheme, inviting the public into their studios to reveal how and where they work. The event annually attracts thousands of visitors and in 2019 more than 31,000 people ocked to studios across Norfolk. Norfolk Open Studios enables artists to promote and sell their work directly to visitors who can see artwork as it happens in the studio. During Norfolk Open Studios 2019, 430 artists participated across 250 venues along with 19 Norfolk schools. Throughout the county artists came together to create 16 Art Trails, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios in one day. Art demonstrations, private views, workshops and talks also make up this key event. Ros Dixon, Norfolk Open Studios Administrator, said: “Norfolk Open Studios is very popular and well-loved by both artists and visitors. I think the scheme’s success is down to its format which oers artists a way to showcase their work Sculptor Andy Jarrett and meet and talk with people about Credit Andy Jarrett their art in an informal way.

Norfolk Open Studios 2020 will take place between Saturday 23 May and Sunday 7 June 2020. Artists wanting to take part can apply online at www.norfolkstudios.org.uk The cost for inclusion in the scheme is ÂŁ110 for individual artists, ÂŁ300 for groups of artists and ÂŁ110 for schools. This includes a listing, proďŹ le and artwork image in the Norfolk Open Studios brochure with a print run of more than 30,000. Artists will also receive an online proďŹ le on the Norfolk Open Studios website, showing a selection of their work, contact details and links to their website and social media channels – this proďŹ le remains published for up to one year. Cromer glass artist flutters into Reepham with new collection

Christmas will soon be upon us. With this in mind, those seeking unique gifts for loved ones have various opportunities to discover handmade gems that are otherwise unavailable on the high street. “I am introducing my new Christmas ranges,” reveals local glass art Sue Purser Hope, who is Chair of the Contemporary Glass Society. She has ensured that her exciting new collection is available throughout the county at the following event: 9am to 4pm on November 30. St Michaels Reepham, Reepham Artist and Makers collective. Sue ran her Midlands based commercial interior design consultancy for many years until changing direction in 2005 when she returned to university to study glass making. Six years ago, she moved to North Norfolk, fulfilling a lifetime's ambition to live by the sea. Her latest collection of glass art is inspired by her passion for the circus. Her work features fused and painted forms that hold secrets and stories, creating explosions of potent, dynamic colour and shapes in a three-dimensional format. Susan can testify that life is never dull within the world of glass.

HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUB

On 11th November, Simon Harrap from Natural Surroundings gave a presentation about the wild flowers of Norfolk. Some outsiders perceive East Anglia to be homogenous and flat but we have twelve distinct natural areas with very different soils and, consequently, very different flora. Perhaps our most famous area, the Broads, is relatively poor for wild aquatic flowers as boat traffic disturbs the vegetation and the water is too polluted with phosphates and nitrates running off the land. The best places to look are spring fed ditches separated from rivers. Most of East Anglian fenland has been drained for agriculture over the centuries but marshy areas are still rich in wildflowers. Our Norfolk Reed, cut for long lasting thatch, can be found worldwide known by other names but, in the UK, the sole food of the British swallowtail butterfly larvae, Milk Parsley, only grows in our fens. Breckland is botanically unique because its very thin, dry sands over chalk do not hold heat so nights are always cold. Its flora resembles that of eastern Austria! Several of Britain’s rarest plants can only be found here. Plants that grow in our heathland and boggy mires are usually to be found in the wet, northwestern corner of Britain. Our coastal landscape consists of soft cliffs, shingle beaches and some of the best saltmarsh in Europe and would have been similar 5000 years ago. Plants here are tough survivors. As always, Simon’s talk was richly illustrated with examples of fascinating plants. The next time somebody remarks that we have no mountains, I’ll be able to hold my own!

a cold winter morning, the retained warmth of the firebox can be surprisingly welcome! After that, Christine became a driver and drove Poppy Line locos up and down the line between Sheringham and Holt. She said she had a special liking for the late David Shepherd’s engine ‘Black Prince’. The club were also shown a video of Christine’s trip to drive Polish engines, and numerous still photos of the lady in action! Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. So – what do you do after you finish off the building of your aunt’s house in Wells Next the Sea – which had been brought and rebuilt piece by piece from Ware in Hertfordshire? You write a book about it. And after that? Well, the indefatigable Christine Adams decided to do strenuous and dirty jobs on the Poppy Line and this was the subject of her talk to Holt and District Probus Club in Christine Adams early November. Christine’s first job on the North Norfolk Railway was as a cleaner – and steam locomotives are very dirty things! She went on to be a fireman – or we should say firewoman or fireperson. She learned to fill the firebox with wood and to light the fire at the crack of dawn using a piece of wood wrapped in a length of rag dipped in paraffin. She “invented” the use of a kitchen blow torch to keep a flame going to light the rag with! And of course, she kept the fire going with shovel after shovel of coal. All of this was not without its problems. One of the jobs that has to be done the morning after a locomotive has been running is to get inside the firebox and clean out the accumulated clinker. Firebox doors are not on the whole designed for women to squeeze through! But Christine said on

North Norfolk Astronomy Society Introductory Astronomy Course

The North Norfolk Astronomy Society will be holding its popular Introductory Astronomy Course at Binham Village Hall Starting 21st of February 2020. The course will be held on four successive Friday evenings and will cover subjects such as the night sky, the Moon, space exploration and telescopes. The course is aimed at absolute beginners and those with a little knowledge of astronomy. Places cost £26 per adult and £8 per child (accompanied by an adult). Enriching the lives of those less fortunate, by giving them the independence of a bike really does change lives. Our bikes provide people with opportunities to gain new skills and sustainable income which enables them to invest in their own projects. Bikes which may not be suitable to send to Africa are stripped down for spare parts or are repaired and sold to the community here in the UK. The charity has received 14,500 bikes at its Warehouse this year and since we started in 1998, we have sent over 111,000 bikes. DANCING IN THE STREET

Christmas at Mannington – 14th & 15th December

My mother and I were out for the day shopping. Trawling around the latest cut price bargains was not my idea of a day out. Then we heard music playing around the corner, so I went to see what spark of entertainment had lifted the dullness of the day. There I saw Morris dancing for the first time. Dancing in the street. What fun the dancers were having. They were smiling and happy. They were carefree and lifted the spirits of the crowd who had gathered to watch. I wanted to be part of this joyfulness like I had never wanted anything so much in a long time. Finding a Morris side was difficult. Not many to be found in this part of East Anglia. I had heard of the Lobster Potties weekend of dance in Sheringham but never thought to see what it was all about. Not a clue it was a town full of colourful, dancing, happy groups of people from all over the country and world. So, I joined a Morris side. How it has changed my life! I have travelled the world dancing. Met and married my husband. I have made an enormous network of friends and it has even set me on the road to my life as a puppeteer. Local Morris side Holt Ridge have spent a busy summer at various locations throughout the county. The season began when we danced at dawn on 1 May at Roman Camp, which has now become an annual tradition. We spent a very busy May bank holiday weekend dancing at different locations for three consecutive days including Cromer Pier, The Stalham Fringe Festival and the Poppy Line platforms. The Potty Festival in Sheringham in July is always a highlight of our year which we help to organise and host. In addition, we have danced at numerous summer fetes, festivals and local pubs. Our two brief appearances on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow were of special note this year too when we were featured dancing at Cromer – not as exhibits! We start practice in the winter generally at Marsham Village Hall on a Monday evening ready to start the new season in May. Both men and women are welcome. This is the ideal opportunity to keep this British tradition alive and take up a new hobby, keep fit and make new friends into the bargain. There are lots of places to see Mr Claus himself during the festive period, but this year Mannington Estate is hosting the Christmas Fairy with her Elf helper. They will be hiding in a special corner of the hall which is not normally open to visitors. The hall will be traditionally decorated, the gardens will be lit up and there will be Christmas activities, music and festive fayre. The event runs on the 14th & 15th December from 11am – 7pm with visits to the Fairy between 2-4pm. Entry is £5 or £8 on the day for adults, under 16’s is free but a visit to the Christmas Fairy is £5. Next year Mannington are hoping to encourage children’s interest in gardening by running various competitions and activities along with their Nature Club, The Mannington Minnows which has been running for over 35 years. Upper Sheringham Bells have been tuned!

We are still waiting for the date when the bells from All Saints Church in Upper Sheringham will be making their journey back from the bell works in Dorset to North Norfolk ready to be returned to the tower to be fitted in the new frame before they will once more ring out over the village. We had hoped this would be before Christmas, but this is now looking unlikely – it should be early in the New Year – watch this space! Whilst the bells have been away, they have been tuned so we are expecting them to sound amazing. To tune bells metal is taken out from the inside of the bell – see attached photo. Once they return, we will start to ring them prior to every Sunday Service at Upper Sheringham and also hold a “practice night” on a Tuesday evening from 7.30pm to 9pm. A Fine old city, truly is that

My mother was a gamekeeper's daughter from west Breckland and though she spent all her adult life in Norwich was a firm believer in an outdoor life for boys. I was the beneficiary of this creed and for a five-penny bus ride, in the early fifties, could transport myself to Earlham, to the west of where we lived in Heigham, or to Mousehold Heath to the west. I had been familiar with Earlham from my third year. It was a nursing home in the immediate post war period and my younger sister had been born there. The open parkland, with its stately elms, seemed like a paradise to me in my early years, and, like many small boys, I loved to fish in the River Yare which runs along Earlham's western boundaries. I saw my first red squirrel just inside the park gates around 1950 and an otter near the Yare in that severe winter of 1962/3. If I chose to spend my five-penny bus ride and go to the east, I would find myself on the east side of Mousehold Heath and spend a glorious morning rambling westward across it. The marvellous scent of gorse (or furze as some prefer to call it) has never left me, and always transports me back to Mousehold. The last spot of my ramble on the heath would bring me to a place where that fine prospect of Norwich, with the cathedral as centrepiece, greets the eye. From there I would descend from the heath and wander back via Bishopgate to the cathedral, always noting with awe that stone tablet in the wall which said "Near this spot in 1549 was killed Lord Sheffield in Kett's rebellion" If time permitted I would stroll around the cathedral and from there pick my way home through the city to Heigham. Another favourite boyhood haunt of mine in the 1950's was Norwich Cattle Market which was held on Saturdays in its historic site on the Castle Hill. It was wonderful to hear the cacophony of sounds of moving livestock and the rustic accents of the stockmen. Apart from the dress of the farmers, the scene must have been little different to the Hill of a century, and more, before. My father, though born in Norwich, was descended on both sides from old Norfolk country families. If he spent all his days in the city, he was still at heart a Norfolk countryman: such things are in the blood, as they say. In his case, though, it was quickened with romance, and it is a great consolation to me to know that he initiated me in the work of one who had immortalized all the places I have just referred to. George Borrow's introduction to Norwich runs thus: "A fine old city, truly is that, view it from whatever side you will;...."

On Tuesday 5 November, after a tasty lunch, Steve Piotrowski gave an enthralling talk about the award-winning Suffolk Community Barn Owl Project. The project was founded by Steve in 2005 as part of the response to the national decline in barn owl numbers (there were 12,000 pairs in 1932 but only 3,750 in 1982). He explained that the decrease was a result of a lack of feeding and nesting opportunities brought about by loss of habitat. The project has installed more than two thousand nest boxes, the majority of which are made by SOLD, a Lowestoft-based charity. These nest boxes have enabled the barn owl to recover and there has been a ten-fold rise in population since the late 1980s. Steve stated that the barn owl is one of the most dedicated parents in the bird world. The male is much smaller than the female and is excluded from the nest once the eggs hatch, although he continues to feed his young. Barn owls are silent hunters, relying on their incredibly sensitive hearing to locate their prey. Their main target is the short-tailed vole, which, fortunately for the owl, is widespread in the UK and is very productive, breeding like mice. A surprising fact Steve revealed is that there is no waterproofing on the owl’s plumage, which is why drowning is the second biggest killer, after road accidents, of barn owls. For filling 6oz Dark Chocolate 180ml Double Cream 1tsp grated blood orange zest 2tbsp orange juice 1tsp vanilla essence 1tsp orange liqueur 1 egg (beaten)

For candied orange Blood orange thinly sliced 100g sugar

For Tart Case 200g plain flour 100g cold butter 2 tbsp. cold water Pre heat oven to 200c, rub butter into flour, then add water, slowly mixing until combined well. Let sit for 20 mins. Roll out to 1/2cm thick and mould into a tart case. Bake in oven until golden brown.

Heat cream and zest until simmering, add chocolate and stir until completely melted. Add orange juice, vanilla and liqueur and stir then add beaten egg and stir in thoroughly. Let cool for ten mins then pour into tart cases and chill for 2 hours. For orange pre heat oven to 180c, coat orange in sugar and place 1on10/10/2019 lined baking in oven until PBDN with border_Layout 14:58tray. PageBake 1 dried out (5-10 mins).

Come and Sing Mozart Requiem with The Yorke Trust The Yorke Trust's first Come and Sing day will be held on Saturday 29 February 2020 in The Old Chapel, Creake Road, South Creake, NR21 RJF. This is a chance for anyone to come along and have a go at one of the finest works in the repertoire. No previous experience is necessary as there will be plenty of people in the chorus who know the piece well. The workshop will be led by the conductor, Christopher McMullen-Laird and the solo parts will be sung by students from music conservatoires. The Come and Sing day will be followed by a free concert of Mozart Requiem at 6pm in the Old Chapel. Graham Allen Award Winners 2019

New visitor centre on iconic North Norfolk estate wins annual design award. The Lookout, on Holkham Estate, has been presented with North Norfolk District Council’s Graham Allen Award, an esteemed award given each year to the project considered to have made the most significant contribution to the built environment within the district. The new visitor centre forms a striking circular arrival to the Holkham National Nature Reserve. The building comprises of a small café, orientation exhibition and conveniences for visitors through its distinctive timber cladded finishes and open, inviting layout. With the nature reserve attracting approximately 800,000 visitors per year, this stunning new gateway promises to offer a unique visitor experience for years to come. James Bracey, General Manager at Holkham Estate, said: “We feel extremely honoured to be recognised for this award. The construction of the Lookout has created a much needed visitor facility at Lady Anne’s Drive, Holkham. This iconic building was designed to sit subtly within the landscape, whilst creating a strong link between the visitor and the natural environment. The building intentionally provides the simplest of facilities of respite, refuge and interpretation. This projects demonstrates Holkham’s commitment to the natural and built environment.” The award has been running for the last 38 years to celebrate the best practice in design and conservation in North Norfolk. The results of the awards were announced yesterday, November 7, at a ceremony at North Norfolk District Council’s offices in Cromer. Phillip Rowson, North Norfolk District Council’s Head of Planning, said: “The Lookout is a fantastic new focal point for visitors exploring the nature reserve and will encourage understanding of its sensitive habitats and wildlife. The centre offers incredible views of the surrounding landscape and it’s the relationship with its setting which makes it so special. “The quality of this year’s entries and subsequent shortlist for judging was exceptionally high, so this year’s winners can be incredibly proud of

their achievement.” The Lookout was not the only winner on the day. The prize for Highly Commended went to The Shambles Café. The project saw the repair and conversion of a derelict Grade II Listed building in the heart of North Walsham. The building, which dates back to the 16th Century, is one of the oldest in the town and had fallen into a serious state of disrepair. The historic building has now been lovingly restored and is a popular local enterprise which has transformed the vitality of the area. Fakenham also enjoyed the spotlight when The Mews on Barons Hall Lane won the Commended prize. The project saw the creation of 10 high quality new homes formed in a contemporary terrace. The People’s Choice Award, voted for members of the public at North Norfolk District Council’s Greenbuild event, went to the refurbishment of Little Regents Hall in Sheringham. The historic community hall has been cleverly restored into a Bed and Breakfast. Previous winners of the have included the refurbishment of the Gunton Arms on the edge of Thorpe Market and Hootz House at Pensthorpe Natural Park and last year’s overall winner; Church Barn in East Ruston.

Chance to have say on new recycling centre set to feature county’s largest reuse shop

Norwich’s new recycling centre is moving a step closer this week as people are being urged to give their views on plans for the brand-new site that is set to see the opening of Norfolk’s largest reuse shop. The plans released today also include plenty of parking, a one-way traffic system, and easy access bins with no steps. Cllr Andy Grant, Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste, said: “Creating a new site from scratch has given us the opportunity to shape it to meet people’s needs. We asked people last year what they would like to see at the new recycling centre. The feedback was clear - people wanted easy access bins, smooth traffic flow through the site, plenty of parking and a reuse shop, so this is what we’ve done. “We are yet to start a formal planning process as that would follow in the coming months. At this stage we’d be particularly keen to hear if there’s anything we have missed or may need to change. We’ve set aside £2.75m for the project and I’d urge everyone who lives and works in and around Norwich to take a look at our plans as we’d love to hear your thoughts.” A site near Norwich airport, off the A140/Broadland Northway junction, has been earmarked for the brand-new recycling centre. Work has been underway over the past year to secure a new site for the city as the contract on the current site at Mile Cross expires in 2021. The four-week consultation closes on 2 December. Come and Experience the Fun Of Rowing

This is one of the best times of the year for Blakeney Rowing Club. For a brief period, it will be possible to choose between Blakeney or Barton Broad for rowing. At the time of writing, Hoi Larntan, one of the club’s beautiful skiffs, is on Blakeney Carnser whilst Bluejacket, the other boat, is at Cox’s Boatyard so that crews can explore the surrounding Broads. What a great choice! At Blakeney the expeditions consist of trips to the Point or to Cley; these are experiences worth having. At Barton, outings have gone to How Hill as well as Wayford Bridge and beyond. There has also been a row from Wroxham to Coltishall with a pub lunch at the half-way stage. For pictures of all these events look at the club website shown below. There are many more exploratory trips planned, including a Valentine’s Day cruise on the Broads on February 14th. That one is bound to be popular. The next competitive event will be the Carrow Cup race on 7th December in Norwich. You could be part of the fun. There is no obligation to race, just be prepared to meet people of all ages who enjoy the growing sport of skiff rowing. Sample three rows as a guest before deciding whether to join.
