Free car parking boost for Christmas shoppers offered by North Norfolk District Council
Town councils choose their two key dates Every town in North Norfolk has chosen two days of free parking over the festive period. North Norfolk District Council has decided once again to waive the parking charges prior to Christmas, as in previous years. This year the free parking period will run on various dates between November 30 and December 22. The decision supports North Norfolk's businesses and traders by encouraging people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies in their local towns. At a crucial time of year for the retail community, it is also a gesture of goodwill for the festive season in response to requests from
businesses. Posters will be put up in advance in all relevant car parks giving the information for the individual towns. On the days themselves, payment machines will be covered to make sure people understand they do not need to pay.
The free weekend car parking sessions will be: • North Walsham – November 30 and December 21 • Cromer – November 30 and December 7 • Fakenham – November 30 and December 7 • Stalham – December 8 and 14 • Wells – November 30 and December 14 • Holt – December 15 and 22 • Sheringham – December 7 and 14
A council spokesman: “We are delighted to offer this service once again. It will provide economic benefit to high streets across North Norfolk and should encourage residents to shop locally.”

Car Parking on Grass Verges
Dear Jo Unfortunately a whole line was skipped in copying my letter into print in the last issue of The Holt Chronicle and that was the kingpin of my subject as it read that the County Council is responsible for providing and maintaining the grass verges, thus it is the county precept on the council tax we pay for mowing and, through that precept, the public would pay for reinstatement rather than the car owners – if only they would stop parking on the grass. It didn’t take me three phone calls to find out that the public has to pay for mowing through council tax; we all know that. Readers might have wondered which the ‘three relevant local authorities’ are in this issue as the printed letter only mentioned two: the District Council as the parking authority and King’s Lynn Borough Council as providing the traffic wardens. As far as I can tell from my inquiries, the problem and the responsibility devolves to the District Council putting double yellow lines on the road where there should be no parking on the grass verges; then the County can reinstate them. The plastic cones protecting a churned up grass verge by the scrapyard in Hempstead Road can only be a temporary solution. Yours sincerely, Cedric Greenwood
Thank You
Dear Jo A massive thank you to the wonderful lady who handed my handbag into Budgens Store on Saturday when it was left on the shopping trolley. I cannot thank you enough for your extremely kind act. Kindest regards, Jan Gilling.
Dear Jo, We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the helpers at the Copeman Centre village hall bingo as without their help we would be unable to run our weekly sessions, also thanks to all our members for the wonderful support they give our monthly charity raffles which has enabled us to send the following :Air ambulance ÂŁ510,Children with Cancer ÂŁ500,Dementia ÂŁ440 and The Jenny Lind ÂŁ500 this year. Since we have June Whatling been having charity raffles (2016) we have raised a total of ÂŁ6,252 which has been sent to various charities. Merry Christmas and Happy New year to all our members. I would like to add that in 2020 Mum will have been on the village hall committee and running the bingo for 50yrs at one time also being Chairlady, booking officer and Caretaker. Whilst not so active in her duties now she still loves to be involved with all what happens at the village hall... Pauline J & P Whatling
Thank You
Dear Jo We would like to say a big Thankyou for all the lovely letters and cards of condolence we received on the loss of our Dearest darling Arthur. We would also like to thank everyone who came to the service and for all Donations received. The total amount raised was ÂŁ468. Which has been equally shared between East Anglian Air Ambulance and Prostate Cancer UK. Also a big Thankyou to Nicola for the wonderful afternoon Tea. Yours Sincerely Ronnie Beresford & Family.
Events of 17 February 1945 in Field Dalling remembered
BOOKS PURCHASED
On the 17 February 1945, while attempting to return to its home base at Attlebridge near Norwich, a stricken B-24 Liberator bomber crashed down Roddy Lane, Field Dalling, resulting in the deaths of not only its crew but also two Italian POW farm labourers. A small team of local people with a strong interest in the story have researched these events and have also retrieved several crash items confirming the plane’s identity and exact location of the crash site. It has been proposed there should be a small memorial stone and plaque to mark the location and honour the men whose lives were so suddenly cut short in this very significant part of our history. Several local people have been instrumental in the planning and development of this project and we are very grateful to individuals and organisations who have already provided considerable support. Amazingly the nephew of one of the plane’s crew, who lives in Lexington, USA, has been keeping a close eye on the project and it’s thanks to an earlier article in the Local Lynx (issue 111, two years ago) that he became aware of our activities. While the memorial is quite modest in scale, the anticipated cost of the etched stainless-steel plaque and stone/concrete plinth is estimated to be approximately £200. We wonder whether anyone would like to assist with donations. We are considerably grateful to Field Dalling parish council for giving their consent for the project and it is anticipated the County Council will also give their approval very soon.

Acupuncture at Holt Holistic Centre
Acupuncture has moved into the 20th century by developing increasing standards of training and thereby, the quality of its acupuncturists and the rigorousness of research into its use and effectiveness. All of this has allowed acupuncture to develop in confidence as a system of treatment. I treat people for both the short-term acute troubles and those with long term health conditions that seriously affect their life, and which may permanently affect how their bodies function. From an acupuncture perspective it may be a quick fix. For example, a strained back or acute stress, sorted in a couple of sessions or a long-term journey to help someone’s life be more bearable with conditions such as arthritic knee pain or fibromyalgia. North Norfolk has an above average older population and much of my practice is related to the issues which come with age. Our bodies start to change, and we experience wear and tear of the joints and it is harder to recover with the same ease as when we were younger. Many of these issues respond to acupuncture. Grief is another area that may be helped, with support for the grieving process. We start to lose partners and friends more often and the first year after a death is a critical time for our own health. So often during this time we can succumb to being ill. Acupuncture sees the emotions as any other pathogen and feels strongly that this is a time to have treatment to ease the way. I am always happy to talk. Sometimes a short course of treatment is all that is required. For others regular visits keep things going enough to carry on with daily life without further major interventions. KELLING PROBUS CLUB NOVEMBER MEETING
Kelling Probus Club held its November meeting at 'The Dales Hotel' Upper Sheringham on the Thursday 21st. After the usual gathering of members for drinks and fellowship. We were welcomed by chairman Andrew Hyatt who welcomed 24 members and our guest after lunch speaker. We were served a tasty lunch and after coffee our speaker Nick Owens spoke to us about 'The Bees of Norfolk'. Nick began by telling us that there were over 200 species of bee and 180 species of wasp in Norfolk, living in Weybourne he was able to describe lots of the local bumble bees. Nick a retired school teacher and a wildlife expert then showed the most amazing pictures of wasps and bees and ran through the life cycle of these insects. He covered all sorts of examples of bumble Bees and how they varied from species to species and their nests and habits were so variable. The author of a book 'The Bees of Norfolk' his book published in 2017 he told us that his next project was 'The Bumblebees of Great Britain & Ireland' which should be published in the next twelve months. Questions he was asked were numerous and very interesting as his knowledge was very helpful...Why so few wasps this year? Where did the bee’s knees come from? What about a bee in the bonnet? After a very good talk he was thanked by secretary Ken Murray, members were able to look at and purchase his book. We meet at the Dales on the third Thursday of every month for lunch and an interesting speaker, for more information view our website or contact John Whittington on 01263 820333 While I was working as a store Santa, a boy asked me for an electric train set. “If you get your train,” I told him, “your dad is going to want to play with it too. Is that all right?” The boy became very quiet. So, moving the conversation along, I asked, “What else would you like Santa to bring you?” He promptly replied, “Another train.”

Norfolk scoops international policing award for Operation Moonshot
Norfolk Constabulary has won a prestigious international policing award for its innovation in tackling, disrupting and preventing crime. The force beat off competition from 54 finalists, drawn from more than 100 outstanding entries from across the globe, to win a trophy at the new World Class Policing Awards event, held in London last night (14 November 2019). Operation Moonshot combines police intelligence, specialist training and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) tools and has returned some incredible results since it piloted in 2016. The programme uses ANPR static and mobile cameras to highlight vehicles of interest and innovative use of intelligence to provide a bespoke ‘hotlist’ ensuring vehicles stopped by the intercept team are actively relevant criminals. It means intercept teams can now pick out criminals of interest from other more road and traffic-related offenders. Operation Moonshot was part of a wider change programme at the force, and its successes have been nothing short of outstanding set against cuts to police resourcing. The types of crime being disrupted by the programme are high harm, high-risk offenders ranging from organised crime groups through to outstanding domestic abuse offenders. Operation Moonshot teams have seized 28 knives, five imitation and viable firearms and charged 13 criminals with offensive weapon offences while non-residential burglary and vehicle crime has been reduced in Norwich. The three teams, covering Norwich, East and West have made a total of 1,432 arrests and 1,351 seizures. Thousands of pounds worth of stolen property has also been recovered. The World Class Policing Awards celebrate and acknowledge the best in all aspects of 21st century policing with a total of 54 nominations recognised in nine separate categories. Judges commented that Moonshot was an "extremely impressive operation”. Moonshot was among four nominations for Norfolk, the others were: Norfolk Multi-Agency Child Exploitation Program Board Partner organisations: Norfolk County Council Children’s Services; Norfolk County

Youth Offending Team; Office for the PCC for Norfolk. Integrated Offender Management Bridge Model Norfolk & Suffolk Constabularies. Partner organisations: National Probation Service/Norfolk and Suffolk Community Rehabilitation Company. Tom Farrell. Partner organisations: Home Office Chief Constable Simon Bailey said: "I’m incredibly proud that Norfolk was shortlisted in four nominations for the inaugural World Class Policing Awards. "All entries are winners in their own right, however I’m delighted that Operation Moonshot was successful. "I believe this recognition underlines the success of investing in the future through our 2020 plans and making sure the force is best-placed to tackle crime in the 21st century. "Enhanced pro-active policing coupled with the use of technology means we are able to tackle criminals who pose the greatest harm to our communities. "This project is a wonderful example of a frontline officer, PC Darren Hopson, suggesting where we could make improvements to benefit the whole force. It’s pleasing to see this commitment recognised on a global stage.” More information on the awards can be found here: https://worldclasspolicing.com/home#about

St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. The Church contains many interesting features, including a 14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi. The Church draws a congregation partly from outside the Village from those who value traditional services using the words of the Book of Common Prayer.

Dear Friends, Be it the darkness of hunger, poverty, homelessness, grief, pain, sickness, violence, hatred, loneliness, abuse, mental illness or fear, the world can be a dark place for many people. No doubt we all experience dark times in our lives and when we do where are we to find light? Because no matter how dark life may seem there is always light to be found if we look for it. We see it in the compassion and care shown by others, the kind word or gesture of a friend or even stranger, the care and the support by those dedicated to the care of others. We see it daily in our communities in botth individuals and organisations who are making a difference to people’s lives. We see in it our voluntary and community groups, in our youth groups and in groups for the elderly, in our hospitals and care homes. We see it in our schools, our village halls, community centres and in our churches. In the towns and villages around the area there are so many people who bring light into people’s lives, old and young alike, dispelling the shadows of darkness by offering hope and love. Once again, the church prepares to celebrate the birth of Jesus who is named as the “Light of the World”. In these weeks leading up to Christmas known as Advent, Christians watch and wait for the coming of Christ our Light. We invite him to dispel the darkness in our own lives that we might in turn dispel the darkness in the world. Born of Mary, the birth of Jesus brought the light of God’s love, joy, hope and peace into the World. A light that darkness cannot overcome and which offers the whole of humanity hope. As individuals and as members of the human race we must not lose sight of the power that the light of God’s love has to triumph over the darkness of sin and evil in the world. One of my favourite modern hymns is “Christ be our Light” by Bernadette Farrell and she expresses it well with the following words; Longing for peace, our world is troubled Longing for hope, many despair. Your word alone has pow'r to save us. Make us your living voice.
Every blessing,

Christmas Giving – Older folk need your help!
Age Concern North Norfolk is urgently looking for volunteers who can offer 3-4 hours a month to help lovely (but lonely) older people. Our Day Centre hub, offering social contact, food and more is based in Sheringham (35b Cremer Street) and we are a small local charity, raising all our own funds. We also run two social groups for older people, one in Sheringham and one in Cromer, and provide drop in assistance at home. Currently we need someone to do the minutes for us at the Trustees meetings in Sheringham– once a month on a Thursday afternoon. We also need more trustees with a wide ranging set of backgrounds to help move the charity forward. If you have HR experience or a love for older
folk, together with some good ideas and time to commit to 4 hours a month (2 hours of these are at the Trustees meeting on a Thursday) we would love to hear from you. We have an informal interview process and you can find out more by contacting our Day Centre Hub on 01263 821188, or by emailing our manager on
manager@ageconcernnn.co.uk. we look forward to hearing from you Jennie Cummings-Knight (on behalf of Board of Trustees)
Festive cheer and fundraising at the annual ‘Carols by the Bell’
In aid of The Big C - Norfolk’s cancer charity - and Hunworth Church On Monday 16th December 2019, the Hunworth Bell will once again welcome crowds of carol singers for its much-loved ‘Carols by the Bell.’ This year proceeds from this increasingly popular event will be donated to The Big C, Norfolk’s cancer charity, and towards the upkeep of Hunworth Church. This unique event, held in the idyllic village of Hunworth near Holt, has proved increasingly popular with locals and visitors from further afield thanks to its warm welcome, delicious food and excellent selection of rousing carols. As in previous years, visitors will be treated to a complimentary glass of mulled wine, festive scotch eggs and of course homemade minced pies from the kitchen at this award-winning local pub and restaurant. A fantastic raffle, with prizes donated by all the suppliers to the Hunworth Bell, will treat lucky visitors to some wonderful bottles and delicacies, just in time for Christmas entertaining. ‘Carols by the Bell’ is part of a series of Christmas events being held at The Hunworth Bell over the festive period, all proceeds from which will be donated 50/50 to The Big C and Hunworth Church. On Friday 13th December, Gary Winter and his friends will be playing festive jazz and carols in the bar area of the pub. On Thursday 19th December, there will be a special Christmas Quiz. Entry is ÂŁ5 per person with ÂŁ1 going to each of the two charities and ÂŁ3 going to the prize pot. There will be donation buckets and raffle tickets on sale at all The Hunworth Bell’s pre-Christmas events. Sarah Handley, Manager of The Hunworth Bell and sister pub, The Duck in Stanhoe, said: “We are so looking forward to our series of festive events in the lead up to Christmas period. Our ‘Carols by the Bell’ in particular is a wonderful way to get really into the Christmas spirit and enjoy some of the Hunworth Bell’s legendary hospitality, whilst also raising funds for two important local causes.â€?

As part of the East of England Co-‐operative Society’s commitment to the local community, the shops at Briston and Melton Constable chose to raise funds in support of those families living with dementia in the local area, raising £500 for Holt & District Dementia Support. A presentation took place within the Melton Constable store on the 18th October at which a cheque was handed to the Chair of the local charity, Claire Roberts, by Nick Edgeley (Store Manager) and fellow colleagues Liam Skinner (Team Manager) and Mandy Harding (Customer Service Assistant). The funds will be used to support the work of the charity in providing a weekly dementia-‐friendly café every Tuesday morning at St. Andrew’s Meeting Room in Holt and its outreach Home Visiting service, that enables carers to have regular respite breaks of a few hours away from their responsibilities in caring for their loved ones living with dementia. Claire Roberts expressed her thanks to all the staff and local people for their generosity and described how this would help the volunteer members at Holt & District Dementia Support to continue to provide its services free of charge to local people. If you would like any information about the charity’s services or would like to join in this valuable work as a volunteer, please contact Claire Roberts on 01263 713817 or visit their website at www.holtdementiasupport.org.uk

Market Towns receive £22,000 from NNDC
North Norfolk District Council has approved another £22,000 to community projects in Fakenham, Holt, North Walsham, and Stalham, in the final round of funding from the Council’s Market Town Initiative. North Norfolk District Council established a fund of £400,000 to support initiatives that would help improve the vitality of the District’s in-land market towns. The first two rounds saw a range of initiatives being established by local organisations in all four towns and at a recent meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet, Councillors agreed to approve funding recommendations for the remainder of the funds. The four successful proposals were: • Fakenham Town Council will receive £2,200 as a further contribution to its scheme to renovate shopfronts in a key part of the town centre. • Holt Town Council was awarded £2,850 towards a town centre planting programme, which will not only introduce seasonal displays but aims to educate young people about the plants and how they can be used. • Regenerate North Walsham & North Walsham Town Council are jointly delivering an ambitious scheme to re-vamp the public areas of St Nicholas Court, to which a further £8,000 will be contributed.

• Stalham Town and Stalham Area Business Forum will receive a further £8,954.50 towards a range of improvements to the tourism offer of the town. A Council Spokesperson said: “It has been gratifying to see local town councils, business organisations and others coming up with fresh ideas to attract customers to our local town centres. North Norfolk District Council’s Market Town Initiative was intended to act as a catalyst to regeneration and it is great to see that happening. The Council’s funding has been matched by the energy, enthusiasm and creativity of those who are concerned about the on-going health and sustainability of their local town centres and I look forward to seeing the end result of these projects”

FLYING HIGH AT THE BRISTON ORGAN SHOW!
Music lovers always flock to the series of Briston Organ Shows during the year, when top artists play the best live music on the latest digital instruments. However, for one meeting each year, the show takes on a different format, as the lovely people who help at the shows take to the stage and put on a super evening of home-grown music and laughter entertainment for a worthy cause - and the one they support is the amazing ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital. Over the last few years the group and their lovely audiences have raised several thousand pounds for this great cause, and a few days after this coming Christmas they are about to do it all again! Much of the live music is provided by local organ and keyboard entertainer Mick Leary, with humorous interludes during the show from the ladies who do the refreshments and raffle, the guy who organises the car parking, and anyone else daft enough to volunteer. Entitled ‘The Better Late Than Never’ Christmas show, you can come along and join in the fun for just ÂŁ6! Tickets are already selling well, (‘phone Carol and get yours on 01263 860844) even though the show is not until Friday January 10th 2020 - and with no artist to pay or other overheads for the show, every single penny raised goes to ORBIS. I’m a panto star – get me out of here!
Panto rehearsals have swung into action at Sheringham Little Theatre after the cast arrived at the seaside theatre to prepare for a special season. It is the 10th anniversary of the venue staging its own professional pantomime. And an action-packed Dick Whittington and His Cat features a Victorian “steam punk” style adventure taking Dick from Norfolk to London, with plenty of fun, song, dance, special effects – and even an “escape room”, where the audience helps solve the clues. The show opens on Saturday December 7 and Sheringham’s panto cast get a look at some combines a seven-strong professional cast of costumes and props before beginning rehearsals actors with 32 local children playing cats, dogs Photos by Richard Batson and rats. As the cast met to begin rehearsals and see their costumes for the first time, director Nick Earnshaw, who is also playing the dame, Sarah the Cook, said: “It is always daunting to start – with all the dance routines, songs, ‘slop scenes’ and fights to learn. . “But it is great having a core of experienced actors who know the venue and audience and are like ‘mini directors’ on stage to help the other cast.” Rik Warren (Jonny the Dog) is the longest serving, doing his sixth Sheringham panto, and Kyle Fraser (Dick Whittington) his fifth, but first in a title role. They are joined by North Walsham’s Harry Williams (The Cat) and Lucy Connor (Fairy Bow Bells), who have both graduated from being chorus children to professional senior roles. Newcomers are Danniella Schindler as Alice Fitzwarren, who has just graduated from drama school and Kit Henson (Queen Rat) who has sung in a steam punk band at Alton Towers. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said:
“This is a special anniversary year for us, and it is great to have lots of popular regulars joined by youngsters like Harry and Lucy who have grown up at this theatre and come back as professionals.” Tickets are selling well, and two extra school shows have been added this year due to demand, she added. Dick Whittington and His Cat runs form December 7 to January 1. For tickets and information call 01263 822347, or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com Why does Dick Whittington have a beard? Because nine out of ten owners know that their cats prefer whiskers.

Are you suffering stress and anxiety during festive season?
Christmas time is the season to be jolly but for some people the build up can cause stress and anxiety. High expectations from family and friends, gift buying, very busy shopping centres, never ending lists of things to do, increased family conflicts, financial pressures. Lots of extra activities, especially with social events and if you have children there’s so many extra activities within the school, which you may have to contribute your time too. All this can become very overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be this way. What is anxiety? Anxiety is a feeling of worry, fear or nervousness. Commonly related to something that hasn’t happened yet, the build up of emotions, which cause reactions in the body known as the fight or flight state. Everyone has suffered some form of anxiety at some point in life, for example: feeling worried about a job interview or sitting an exam. For some people this is a regular occurrence for lots of everyday tasks, social events or interactions. These feelings and be much more heightened especially if someone suffers these feelings daily and it impacts their normal life.
5 things you can do to help you reduce the symptoms.
1. Watch what you indulge over the festive period. Its very tempting to eat lots of sugary foods, drink a lot of caffeine or consume more alcohol. Some of which cause energy highs followed by a low, which can impact, on your emotions. 2. Keep Active. Having a walk in the fresh air and in nature helps clear the mind and naturally rebalances you. Why not meet friends for a walk creating a win, win situation? There are many options in Norfolk for keeping fit and active. I have found loads of information at the local library of clubs and groups.
3. Give sometime to you. Self-care, it’s not selfish it’s a must. Spend 5 minutes meditating or stop for some long deep breaths. Learn some relaxation techniques. Take a long relaxing bath. It’s important that you set some time aside for yourself.
Causes of Anxiety Your personal environment can contribute to feeling s of anxiety. Stress from your job, relationships or financial situations. There are many factors stress from emotional trauma such as an illness or death in the family. The festive season has an overwhelming effect on you as mentioned above. This sense of overwhelm can be very debilitating. What are those debilitating feelings? Your heart may beat faster, you may start to sweat, feel hot, and your breath may become short and fast. Shaking. You may lack energy or be extremely tired. You may get head aches or feel dizzy. It may get so intense you actually feel like you are losing control. These are mainly physical there are mental symptoms like overthinking, difficulties sleeping, loss of appetite feelings of dread or panic.
4. Learn to say ‘No’ to things you really don’t want to do, I understand that can be challenging at first but really it does get easier. The more you do it the more you feel liberated. You can say no politely, gratefully decline and without explanation. You could always offer an alternative on your terms if that helps. 5. Look for help and don’t be afraid to ask. There is no shame in asking for help if you are feeling overwhelmed. Know where to ask for help and if you seek professional advice, go to your doctor or online you can look at www.anxietyuk.org.uk talk to friends and family.
I have helped people through anxious periods of their lives with coaching, talking therapies and professional hypnosis. I can help believe in you again and get that control back. If you if you feel ready to work on your stress and anxiety, willing to implement the tools that I teach to improve your life. I am offering a limited amount of complementary sessions at Holt holistic centre. I will listen to your individual needs in full confidence and work out a bespoke plan to suit you. You will have the opportunity to feel the relaxation process that I guide you through, hopefully we can then work together and give you a sense of control back, confidence so you can live a more calm and relaxed life. Here is what Caroline from Holt said: I never felt so low, I’d never been to hypnotherapy before and I was apprehensive. The first meeting with Toni I felt so relaxed, she is so natural. When I left after that first session I was looking forward to the next. I was looking forward to feeling human again and getting back to my creative hobbies and feeling good. That’s exactly what she did in just 6 weeks.
We invite you to come and browse through our eclectic treasure trove, brimming with pre-loved donations just waiting to be re-loved.
Caroline was very anxious when I first met her, she found it challenging just coming in to the centre, as the weeks went on she began to appear more confident and laughing, joking with the staff on reception and being so relaxed around the waiting room, it was wonderful to see. Each week there was an improvement as she took on and practiced the tools that I taught her. Which she has told me she will always use them whenever she feels the need. You too deserve to change the way things are and live a more calm and relaxed life.

Council tree planting initiative
Council scheme to plant 110,000 trees in 4 years North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is pleased to announce its support for National Tree Week as part of its ambition to plant 110,000 trees – one for every person in North Norfolk – over the next four years. The announcement is part of NNDC’s appeal to get members of the public and community groups involved with the tree planting initiative. NNDC launched the scheme at its annual Greenbuild environmental sustainability event in September and the Council has already made signiďŹ cant progress towards achieving this ambitious goal. 10,000 trees will be planted in the Council’s award-winning Holt Country Park and woodland areas and almost 1,000 saplings were given away by the Woodland Trust at Greenbuild for residents to plant. The Council is partnering with the Woodland Trust as its main supplier of trees for the scheme and is looking to involve members of the public and community groups with the planting of the trees. Nick Sandford, Regional external aairs oďŹƒcer at the Woodland Trust said: “The Woodland Trust is delighted to work with North Norfolk Council as it responds to the climate and nature emergency we all face. Its hugely important local authorities lead the way, and North Norfolk’s trailblazing target of planting a tree for every local resident over the next four years is something councils across England should look to follow. Trees are amazing for their ability not just to remove and lock up carbon from the atmosphere, but in oering a home for wildlife and a green place we can all go to and enjoy. We need more of them and what North Norfolk Council is doing is a great start.â€? Last month saw the ďŹ rst two trees planted at the Council’s oďŹƒce in Cromer to symbolically mark the commencement of the scheme by Leader of the Council Sarah BĂźtikofer, Chair of the Council Cllr. Clive Stockton and Senior Countryside Supervisor Anne-Marie Gedge. Cllr. Nigel Lloyd, Environment Portfolio Holder at NNDC said, ‘NNDC declared a climate emergency in April and planting trees to help take carbon out of the atmosphere is a key initiative in our journey to becoming a carbon neutral council by 2030. We hope to engage with communities across the district to help us achieve our goal of planting a tree for every resident over the next four years and, at the same time, we are proud to support National Tree Week in partnership with the Woodland Trust.’ ‘We are asking people to come forward with ideas and suggestions which can contribute to the Council’s aim of planting 110,000 trees. We know that a number of schools, parish councils and other community groups are active in this area and we would like to work with them to help identify sites for the tree-planting and then to nurture the trees they have planted. Events will take place over the tree planting season. Further information on these, and the wider tree planting initiative, can be found via the NNDC For only website (www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/trees). NNDC was the ďŹ rst local authority in Norfolk to declare a climate emergency, and the tree-planting scheme is one of the Council’s many other (excluding Court Fees) environmental initiatives, which also includes the installation of Electric Vehicle Chargepoints on the Council’s car parks this winter and solar panels on the roof at the Council’s Cromer oďŹƒces. ‘MY NORFOLK, MY HOLT' – with Martin Garrard Thursday 12th December 11.00am – 12.00 noon
The next interview in the ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ series is with Martin Garrard (owner of the Holt Fish Bar), on Thursday the 12th of December, between 11.00 and 12.00 noon, at Holt Library. Martin was born in the Norfolk & Norwich hospital in 1978. Grew up in Holt until he moved to Aylsham in 2002. He went to Sheringham high school, Fakenham sixth form and City College. He has worked in the family business the Holt Fish Bar since 1992. It’s been in his family since 1973. He and his wife Amanda took over from his parents in April 2018. He has also been a professional wrestler. He loves Norfolk for the beaches, countryside and rivers. Peaceful towns and villages. Running is his biggest passion now, he’s run three Marathons and is training for more. These sessions are about valuing the contributions of individuals to the life of the community, past and present; about exploring Holt from different perspectives. Participants talk about the Holt and Norfolk they know and love, past and present; how it was when they first knew it, and how it is now, both from a personal and a professional point of view. Recordings of past sessions of “My Norfolk, My Holt' are available as part of the Norfolk Heritage Centre Podcast webpage, which can be found here: www.thenorfolkheritagecentrepodcast.wordpress.com/my-norfolk-my-holt Booking for these sessions is recommended and helpful. (Telephone Holt Library on 01263 712202.) The event is free but donations to the library are welcome. Tea and coffee are available. ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ – is a way of bringing together different members and sections of the community, as well as valuing the place of the library. The next ‘My Norfolk, My Holt, is on January 16th with Tony Leech (Chair of the Holt Society)
The Gallant Gardener
Christmas at Mannington 14th & 15th December
Hello my name is Chris and I am called the Gallant Gardener, ever since I have been able to hold a spade I have been gardening, growing my own, or creating gardens and opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy gardening as a hobby or indeed to go on to create their own gardening businesses. I can hear my father now telling me to cut a spit and throw it up and make sure you turn it over boy! Our land was heavy, wet and clay and it took some effort. I have always had the opportunity to garden, whether it was at primary or secondary school. During our travels across Norfolk, we have always had a productive garden, able to collect fresh vegetables and grow plants. In my later years I taught horticulture and environmental science, in various locations in North Norfolk and beyond. Gardening must have been in the family, as one of my uncle’s was head gardener at Melton Constable Hall back in the 1960s for Lord and Lady Hastings. I can remember going over to the glasshouses and seeing the lemons and other fruit being grown. This brings me to the Victorians, who were masters at cultivating fruit and vegetables for the whole year. At this time of the year, I bring into my greenhouse or indeed conservatory several well established strawberry plants. I put them in 12” (30cm) pots in a multipurpose compost and nurture them through the winter. When they start to flower in early spring, I give them a regular feed of potassium or potash, this will increase the fruit yield. This will enable me to be eating strawberries a month earlier than those outside. I was listening to somebody the other day who said that they disliked the term putting the garden to bed! In fact, I have always asked the question when does the gardening year start? The answer is it never does…… it’s a continuous cycle. It is not too late to put a couple of rows of broad beans in the garden, I prefer my tried and tested variety of Aquadulce Claudia. This is a heavy yielder and will take a lot of bad weather. Sown now, the seeds will germinate and sit just above ground level. If you are subject to lots of frosts put them in pots and keep them in a cold frame or cold greenhouse to weather the winter. You might lose one or two plants to mice or bad weather; however, you will be picking broad beans earlier than most. Don’t forget your garlic as well you can continue to plant this in the soil providing it is not too wet, a couple of centimetres below the surface, they do need a good hard winter to produce the quality of bulbs………….. Tha’s all for now…..
There are lots of places to see Mr Claus himself during the festive period, but this year Mannington Estate is hosting the Christmas Fairy with her Elf helper. They will be hiding in a special corner of the hall which is not normally open to visitors. It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year……or is it?
to Foodbank clients during December. As the pile of bags grows and the work nears completion so too does the excitement of the volunteers. How many Christmas Bags have we packed this year? At our 2018 Christmas Bag Pack we filled 250 bags full of lovely Christmas food which was amazing. This year, we’re hoping to exceed that total so that during December we can include even more bags of Christmas goodies with our clients’ short term, emergency food supplies through each of our 7 centres in Aylsham (2), Cromer, Holt, North Walsham, Sheringham and Stalham. This is teamwork at its very best supported by true acts of kindness from all our Foodbank donors and volunteers. Thank you and Merry Christmas from all of us to all of you.
There is an air of huge excitement as we gather together on this most special day of the Christmas season. The goodwill, camaraderie, joy and sense of fun abound in such large quantities that it feels like you can reach out and grab a handful to share around. It’s Christmas Bag Pack Day at the Foodbank! If you have been following us you already know that our Foodbank Donors are quietly committed throughout the year to helping others in North Norfolk, who for reasons often beyond their control, need some short-term support to feed their families. It goes without saying that we could not do the work that we do to provide emergency food without their generous donations. But wow! At this time of year, year after year, our Foodbank Donors amaze us by surpassing all expectations with their generosity. Through them we can put together special Christmas bags containing lovely Christmas food treats for our clients and which we all associate with our annual Christmas celebrations. Why would they do this? Especially at a time of high expense for most people? Because these donors want to help our clients enjoy the Christmas that they would want for their families if they weren’t facing financial crises. And in our view, that is the essence of true Christmas spirit. So, back to the Bag Pack. Picture the scene; on a Saturday in early December, a large group of our fabulous volunteers gather at our Cromer warehouse. Excitement and chatter increases as the Christmas treats are set out on long tables ready for packing and people get ready, keen to start this most rewarding of jobs in the Foodbank calendar. At the signal, packing begins. Each volunteer takes something from each group of Christmas treats so that every bag contains a selection of everything and nothing is missed out. Bags full to the brim with chocolate, sweets, Christmas cake and pudding, tinned meats, chutneys, nibbles and Christmas crackers begin to build in the corner of the room ready for distribution

Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard
A Fine old city, truly is that (continued)
Previously I stated that childhood rambles had taken me to Earlham Park, Mousehold Heath and the Castle Hill in Norwich and that I found solace and inspiration in them. None are now what they were then. Earlham Park is now adjacent to the University of East Anglia, which seems to be the presiding institution; Mousehold Heath, if not diminished, is harassed by roads and traffic and the Castle Hill has lost its original purpose as a livestock market. There is a further intrusion in the form of the Castle Mall which changed the milieu of a millennium. Consolation for these losses came to me from George Borrow's Lavengro (1851) which I heard about from my father on a stroll in a track now called Gunton Lane, off Marlpit Lane, Norwich in the early 'Fifties. Borrow (1803-1881) lived for the second half of his childhood in Norwich, and his recollections, though two centuries old, breathe life into my old haunts. Introducing Earlham Park in chapter-fifteen, Borrow describes the River Yare as "a sweet rivulet" and lingers, with prose poetry, to create a living landscape that must resonate for all of my generation who remember the Earlham of old, an island of green tranquility. Borrow's youthful mission, like ours, was angling, and it is while he is fishing that he has an encounter with a tall man who lives in Earlham Hall. "Canst thou answer to thy conscience for pulling all those fish out of the water and leaving them to gasp in the sun"... said the man'... "in a voice, clear and sonorous as a bell." The rhetoric is that of a Quaker, and the man was Joseph John Gurney, Quaker banker of Norwich and brother of our cherished Elizabeth Fry. The meeting between Borrow and Gurney results in a rewarding friendship many years later on. In contrast to his depiction of Earlham, which is mellow and lyrical, Borrow's treatment of a fair of horses on the Castle Hill, in chapter- sixteen of Lavengro is both bracing and brilliant. It is crowned with the appearance of the greatest trotting horse of the epoch. Everyone stands alert at the sight of this old horse and hats are raised in recognition. The young Borrow asks the identity of the stallion and an old man says: "The best in mother England,...he is old like myself, but can still trot his twenty miles an hour....if you should chance to reach my years you may boast to thy great grand boys , thou has seen Marshland Shales." Borrow takes us to Mousehold in chapter twenty-five: "I now wandered along the heath, till I came to a place where, beside a thick furze, sat a man, his eyes fixed intently on the red ball of the setting sun" i.e over Norwich. The man is his 'pal'* Jasper Petulengro. The young Borrow is suffering with melancholy, an affliction he has, but this evokes a long paean of praise for the life of the outdoors that is the lot of the Gypsy. It culminates with a tribute to Mousehold: "There's the wind on the heath, brother; if I could only feel that, I would gladly live for ever. ..." This sentence, more than any other in Borrow's work, raised the life of the Gypsy to great art. Jasper became famous, Queen Victoria made him a deputy ranger of Windsor Great Park and Pakamovna, his wife, a dame of honour, so the story goes. George Borrow has left us with precious memories of the fine old city of his youth and they are a comfort for us who remember Norwich in the quieter days seventy years ago. ‘Rotund Robin’ * 'Pal' is one of those Romany words which has crept into the English language. It comes from Nicola Green snapped this festive little chap this week 'palor' which means brother.

A Trifle Naughty!
Serving our customers in North Norfolk and beyond since 1999
With Christmas looming large on the horizon, it’s good to have a few nifty recipes up your sleeve to ring the changes and bring a little va va voom to the table. This is one ridiculously easy and impressive trifle, full of punchy and exotic flavours, and with the addition of Malibu, most definitely one for the adults only! It’s not the cheapest pud on the planet, but then it’s lovely to conjure up something a little special for high days and holidays, and this one won’t have you slaving for hours in the kitchen. You could almost kid yourself that it’s a healthy trifle, as there’s so much fresh fruit in it, and unlike traditional trifles, it’s not padded out with sugary jelly and custard. The tin of Mango puree can be bought for very reasonable price at Tesco, and it’s a huge tin, so you can use the leftovers to swirl into yoghurt, ice cream, porridge, rice pudding and more. We will most assuredly be breaking this out on Boxing Day!
Tropical Trifle
1 medium fresh pineapple, cored, peeled and cut into small chunks 1 large ripe mango, peeled, destoned and cut into small chunks 6 – 8 trifle sponge fingers Glass of Malibu Tin of Laila Mango Puree 500 ml double cream 2 meringues, crumbled Handful of fresh pistachio nuts
Break the sponge fingers in half and place in the bottom of a deep glass trifle dish, then pour over the Malibu, ensuring that they all get a good soaking. Allow to soak in. Place the nuts in a moderate oven on a tray for about 4-5 mins until toasted, and cool, bashing them up a little. Mix the fresh mango and pineapple together, and place on top of the sponge layer, drizzling a little more Malibu on. Drizzle a couple of tablespoons of mango puree over the fruit. Whip the cream so that it is quite stiff, and then gently fold in about 3 tablespoons of mango puree and mix well. Spoon cream over the fruit, and level off with the back of a large spoon. Refrigerate until serving. Just before you serve, sprinkle the crumbled meringue over the trifle, and scatter over the cooled nuts. Who hides in the bakery at Christmas? Mince spies.

Spitting image?
Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr There is a long held stereotype of judges being old-fashioned. Judge James Pickles became a household name in the 1960s when he asked ‘Who are The Beatles?’ The reality is that the Law Courts are open to scientific developments to help them achieve justice. The Courts have always had to address the question of parentage. It was the stuff of tabloid newspapers in days past. Today, as DNA testing becomes more accessible, the Courts now have to consider how to balance the benefits of DNA testing against the rights of the individual. Jordan Rogers, a care worker, inherited a large country estate, after proving through DNA testing that he was the son of an aristocrat. That ‘rags to riches’ tale came two years after the exhuming of the body of the Spanish artist Salvador Dali for paternity testing. The two most frequent uses are to prove or, conversely, to disprove, that someone is biologically related to a person who has died; usually, but not always, because there is an inheritance at stake. Arguments have been put to the Court, by someone refusing to submit to DNA testing, that it is interference with their human rights. In response the Judge held that the interference was a proportionate means of protecting the public interest in the accurate resolution of inheritance disputes. Another case revolved on whether DNA evidence extracted from the deceased for medical purposes could be released to determine parentage. There, not to do so would have led to injustice, and so, the Judge gave permission for the DNA testing. Where there are sound medical reasons, such as the treatment or prevention of inherited disorders or diseases, for the testing of paternity, and a medical sample is readily available following death, the Court can also order testing.
It has also been held that there is no infringement of a third party’s human rights by DNA testing, even if they find out that they have an additional grandchild. The appellant’s rights must be weighed against the respondent’s rights. Here, there is a slant in favour of the respondent, so as to err on the side of preserving the status quo. The Court is able to order directions where there is reluctance to cooperate. In cases where there is doubt as to parentage, the only way that an executor of an estate can be certain that they are distributing the estate of a deceased person accurately, is to ascertain all the beneficiaries. The improved ability to determine parentage through genetic testing is impacting on the law. A paternity test is generally cheap and painless and can be done using a hair or saliva sample; no blood or needles required! It is much cheaper than the production of witness statements and other evidence. Its great advantage is that it is both definitive and can help parties reach a settlement at an early stage.
This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

Holt Christmas Lights Fancy Dress Competition
At the Holt Christmas Lights turn on, the Holt WI were invited to judge the fancy-dress competitions. This was a nice job for three of us and we had great fun judging both the adults and the children. The winners of the adult competition were the staff at Horatio’s café who all dressed up beautifully although Colin from the Red Dot was a strong contender as were the staff at Byfords. The winners of the children’s fancy dress were August, Cecily and Henrietta Middleton who looked delightful dressed as elves. Their prize was a Starlings Voucher.

Dirty Work
Brown Hare after the snow
Chillin
North Norfolk Photographic Society
The 2019-2020 club season continued on 6th November when North Norfolk Photographic Society held their first competition for printed pictures with judge Andy Swain. There were the usual two sections – one for novice photographers and the other for the more advanced. There were 9 entries in the Novice section, which was won by Lauren Griffiths, whose picture ‘Chillin’ showed a seal chilling out and looking totally relaxed! Second was Cheryl Howell’s ‘Window of Light’ – a dazzling stained glass window and third Lauren Griffiths (again) with ‘Neko Harbour – Antarctica’. In the Advanced section there were more than 30 entries – images that ranged from Natural History to Landscapes and everything in between! Andy Swain Judged the winner was Paul Richards with ‘Barn Owl – Snow Delays Hunting’. This subtle image of a snowstorm showing a barn owl just about making its way through the downpour! Second was Lizzie Wallis with ‘Brown Hare after the Blizzard’ – snow again, this time a hare in the snow with fur matted with snow. Third – Nick Akers’ ‘Dirty Work’ which was a portrait of a bearded man standing in front of a steam engine. Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org/

A LOST WORLD by Leslie Kinsley
BRISTON part 3. There was a clothes shop next to the Reynolds cycle store, but it never did well and kept changing hands. One possible reason for this was a man called ‘Jigger’ McEwen who came from Norwich in his car and went door to door selling clothes on the ‘never never’. You paid one shilling per week (5p). A shilling was a twentieth of a pound, and our wages were only a pound or two per week. After Briston Church and the churchyard there was a general store which was housed in a tin building which was painted green. Next came the fish and chip shop where Bill Godfrey did the frying. He had a really bad temper and took it out on his wife. He would wait till she was scooping chips before throwing the hot ones straight from the fryer over her hands. She would look at the customers in the queue, raising her eyes to the heavens, but no-one ever commented as we were all frightened of his temper too. Sid Wright had his greengrocer business next to the chip shop. He was a short chap who was a real dealer. He talked rough and I never saw him without his trilby hat. He delivered to Melton Constable on a Sunday, driving a pony hitched to a long cart full of small boxes of fruit and vegetables. Ivan Dennis had his blacksmith’s forge next to Sid, but he lived in a council house near the butcher’s. Ivan was a distant relative of my Mother and he was the one who cut up my cast iron bed frame for me so it would fit up the stairs. He wasn’t tall but he was powerful, however he was frightened of horses. He used a sort of animal crush to hold them still while he shod them. A young horse which would not go in this crush had to be put down on its side before he would shoe it. Ivan never swore, as he was a keen Salvation Army man. The Half Moon Pub came next, and it was run by Ronnie Eggleton. He was married to Lily Perry whose Dad was the poultry farmer (the bad tempered one). Once again, Ronnie had to have a second job to make ends meet, so he did farm work. When he worked on the harvesting alongside my Father, he would bring his dog in the afternoons and allow me to take it after rabbits. I would be about 7 or 8 years old then. I was sent to the fields with my Father’s ‘fourses’ about midday. I remember it was in a big pudding basin, and Mother would include a small basin for me.

Tree Hunt at Salle Farms We're going on a tree hunt, We're going to pick the biggest one. What a sunny day down on Salle Farms!
After many years of Christmas tree donations from Stody Estate, depleted stock this year saw us approach Salle Farm to supply a tree to form the back-drop to our festivities throughout December. Astley Primary School's 'Extreme Reading Challenge' winners, Freddie, Holly, Seb and Bow accompany Mrs Patten and Headteacher, Mrs Goakes to meet Tom Barwick, 'Head Gardener of Christmas Trees.' What an amazing job this must be! We march across crunchy thistles and pick our way through tiny saplings on 34 hectares of fields which supply trees to garden centres, farm shops and even Norwich Cathedral. Our school hall isn't quite as tall as a cathedral, but with over 100,000 trees, which one do we pick? The biggest, most splendid tree which we tag for felling, ready to deliver to school to be decorated by the Friends of Astley. You are ‘ACE' Salle Farms! Thank you for our Christmas tree adventure and your kind donation. *ACE is the Astley Curriculum Experience: inspirational, challenging, inclusive and enabling children to become kind and respectful lifelong learners who have choice.
RNLI Loses a Staunch Supporter
Make 2020 the year for your cruise adventure...
On Thursday Nov 21st family, friends, and colleagues of Gary John Taylor gathered at Cromer Crematorium to bid farewell to a dedicated RNLI Volunteer. Since returning from the agro–chemical business in 1992 Gary has worked tirelessly for the Lifeboats, and for 21 years was box Secretary of the Holt Branch. This involved servicing a swathe of collection boxes in Holt and district on a regular basis. Each year his endeavours realised sums in excess of £2000 – which is quite a lot of silver and copper! He gave generously of his time, and the success of his mission was in no small part due to his infectious good humour and positive approach to life. In 2006 Gary was awarded the RNLI Bronze Badge in recognition of his tireless work in behalf of the Institute. He was a most amiable and kindly man and will be hugely missed. The Holt Branch RNLI.

New test for expectant mothers will rule out serious complication
A new test introduced at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) will help in the management of pre-eclampsia. The NNUH is only the fourth unit in the country to take on this test which is recommended in recent National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance. Pre-eclampsia is a condition that only occurs in pregnancy - typically after 20 weeks - and affects around 3 in 100 women. It is diagnosed through a combination of raised blood pressure and protein in a woman’s urine. Establishing which women can be safely managed as outpatients is a common clinical dilemma. This test along with other routine blood and urine tests, defines a group of women who are highly unlikely to develop pre-eclampsia in the following fortnight and therefore can be reassured. The state-of-the-art test, which is described as a point of care (POC) test, allows midwifery staff to use a dedicated specialised machine by the woman’s bedside. Results do not need to be returned from a laboratory and so there is no delay in evaluating the woman’s condition. The test will be suitable for women who are between 22- and 37-weeks pregnant presenting at the hospital with blood pressure concerns where a diagnosis of pre-eclampsia cannot otherwise be determined. Lisa Mastrullo, NNUH Midwife and MacLeod Maternity Assessment Unit (MMAU) Lead, explains: “From a woman’s perspective, the test that we’ll be doing is very simple. Where we would be taking blood as part of our standard monitoring procedure, we will be taking one extra sample in order to measure what’s called Placental Growth Factor (PlGF), which we use as an indicator of pre-eclampsia.” Miss Fran Harlow, Maternal Medicine Lead and NNUH Consultant Obstetrician, said: “We’re delighted to be the first hospital in the region to be introducing this new test for pregnant women. Although rare, complications like pre-eclampsia can be very worrying for families and by ensuring that we are utilising the very latest technology, we can give even better care for our patients by reassuring those who are unlikely to develop pre-eclampsia.”
A Foggy Drive
We’d been to see some relatives, Who lived a fair way off. We left for home as darkness fell, While our family waved us off.
Banks of fog formed as we left, Floating and swirling around. We didn’t know the road very well, But hoped we’d get home safe and sound.
Ahead, we saw a car’s rear lights, There was nothing else we could do. We followed that car as close as we could We just stuck to those lights like glue!
The lights turned left, then right, then stopped. A voice said, “I’ve arrived!” A man’s face appeared at our window. We’d followed him into his drive! Frances wraight

With No. 274, the second in our pre-Christmas competition, is a record-breaker, which showed 3 complete half-pin lines for the first time (half-pin: either of 2 units moves off a line leaving the other one pinned, enabling a pin-mate). Here 5 pin-mates are visible in the diagram, for instance 1… f4 2. gxf4, and all the solver has to do is provide a sixth mate. Difficulty 2.

North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club
North Norfolk Vikings were in action over the weekend of 16th /17th November at the November meet held at the UEA Sports Park in Norwich. The Vikings had a small team of 3 boys and 7 girls. Over the weekend we had 69 individual events and the team came away with 46 personal best times, 1 gold, 10 sliver and 6 bronze medals. I was so very pleased to see what all the hard work we have been doing is now starting to pay off. North Norfolk Vikings’ next competition is in December at the Winter Wipeout meet which this will be another opportunity to achieve Norfolk County qualifying times and a chance to improve in the events we already have a chance, where some swimmers can get closer to qualifying for regional times. Let’s keep up the hard work and improve even more than we have done already. Well done to all those for taking part at the November meet. Special thanks to the team managers, parents and all swimmers. Many thanks. Sam Watts, Lead coach.

Please don’t ask your doctor for everyday medicines
Special Events
People in Norfolk and Waveney are being urged not to ask their doctor for everyday medicines like paracetamol. In line with national NHS guidelines, GPs have been asked to stop prescribing ‘over the counter medicines’ unless in exceptional clinical circumstances. Instead, people are being encouraged to buy them at a pharmacy or shop so that the NHS can spend the money it would otherwise would on other, more clinically serious, areas of healthcare. If more people self-care for minor ailments, it could also free up important appointment time at GP practices. The CCGs have joined forces to launch the new campaign after figures showed the local NHS spent £7.4m last year on remedies for minor conditions such as diarrhoea and indigestion, as well as medicines such as paracetamol. Michael Dennis, a medicines management expert with the CCGs, said: “Your first port of call if you’re suffering with a minor illness should always be your pharmacist. They are highly trained healthcare professionals who can offer help and advice about a huge range of common illnesses without booking an appointment, as well as recommending the right medication to help you self-care at home. By speaking to them first, you could also save yourself a visit to your GP and help free up appointments for other patients in greater need. “Doing your bit is simple, so please help your NHS by caring for yourself wherever possible and buying your own medicines so that we can make the best use of our resources for the benefit of everyone in Norfolk and Waveney.” GPs still have discretion to prescribe items depending on clinical circumstances, for example for people who require large quantities of particular medicines for long-term illnesses.
