from County Councillor Dr Marie Strong wells Division (Glaven, Priory and walsingham wards) marie.strong@norfolk.gov.uk; 07920 286 597
Dear Readers – please note the change of dates in the following item: The independent Local Government Boundary Commission for England is asking for your views on the electoral review of Norfolk County Council. Closing date 11th February 2020 – note this is the third and I am sure the LGBC hope the final closing date. However understandably the draft recommendation consultation period has required amendment. Thus 5 May-13 July 2020 is now the date currently scheduled with final recommendations due to be published on 30 September. Even so all such dates are subject to change so keep an eye open for any further changes. The review will agree new council division boundaries across the council. ■ Do you have suggestions about where your division boundaries should be? ■ Where do people in your area go to access local facilities, such as shops and leisure activities? ■ Which areas do you identify as your local community? News from The Venue
What a fantastic and exciting year we have had at the Venue! As well as rebranding as a new Arts Centre for our town, we have joined in with Town initiatives such as Holt Festival, Love Holt, the Forties Weekend and the Town Fair, redecorated most of the centre inside to a new high standard, overhauled our bar, opened a fabulous new Art Gallery and welcomed many new regular user groups. Holt has had a Community Centre for 44 years, and as the new committee that run the Charity, we intend to ensure that the town continues to enjoy this benefit for many more years to come. Our success this year has only been made possible by the many businesses and individuals who have either sponsored us or volunteered their time and expertise to allow us to effect the changes at the centre, and for that we commend and thank you wholeheartedly. We live in an extraordinarily generous town, not only in terms of money and resources but generous of spirit too. One of the wonderful things about running the centre is that I meet so many people and see just how much people work for the benefit of others within the projects that they run. There are many unsung heroes that work tirelessly on behalf of others week after week, providing services, support groups, cafes and fun events for people to benefit from and enjoy. I hope that if you have been to the Venue this year, you have seen the difference that our group of volunteers has made, the exciting new projects that have begun here, and enjoyed some time at the many groups that meet here. If you haven’t had a chance, can I encourage you to come along and see for yourself, as there is always something going on at least 5 days a week. If you haven’t put your name down for Christmas Day yet, or you now find yourself on your own, we still have room, so do give us a call and book your place. We have a great Christmas Day at the Centre, with a full 2 course Turkey lunch kindly sponsored by Allards Butchers, entertainment and lots of festive spirit! Christmas can be a challenging time, so if you need or want a change, come along and join us. Also, a heads up about our New Year’s Eve Party – tickets are still available but not for long so give us a call! It only remains for me to thank all of you on behalf of the Charity, for all your support and generosity this year, wish you a very Merry Christmas, and say how much I look forward to keeping you apprised of our exciting projects in the New Year.

Dear Jo, Please would you allow me, through the letters page of your magazine, to wish all friends, old and new: A very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year.
I am not sending cards again this year. Instead, I am using the money I would normally spend, to buy books for St. Andrews School, Aylmerton, where I am a trustee. It is an amazing school were all the students are encouraged to work to the best of their ability, and, supported all the way. Thank you so much. Best regards‌and jinglebells! Jo Davis (Holt)

On Tuesday 3 December, after a delicious Christmas lunch, Simon Partridge talked enthusiastically and entertainingly about Christmas. Simon’s passion for Christmas shone through as he recounted its origins and traditions. The Romans gave us Christmas on 25 December when the pagan festival known as Saturnalia evolved into the celebration of the birth of Jesus, following the Roman emperor Constantine’s conversion to Christianity in the fourth century. The legend of Father Christmas can also be traced back to the fourth century when a Christian bishop called Nicholas performed acts of kindness, such as when he gave three bags of gold to three poor girls so they could get married.

Dear Jo, The Holt Branch of the Royal British Legion held their annual Christmas Dinner and raffle at the Feathers Hotel in early December. This year we invited the Chairman of the Sheringham and District Branch of RAFA, Air Commodore Jack Broughton, who has supported our branch over this last year. We would like to take this opportunity to formally thank the following local businesses who have supported the Royal British Legion by kindly donating prizes for our Christmas raffle: Mrs Jane Gurney-Read (Bakers and Larners), Mr Harrie Morshuis (The Feathers Hotel) and, Mr Les Davies (Holt Barber Shop). The prizes generously donated by local businesses and branch members raised ÂŁ90 to support our ongoing work in the community. If you are interested in the work of the Royal British Legion and would like to discuss becoming a member, please contact Lauren Griffiths. Honorary Secretary on 01263 663178 or, 07850 649160, or by email: Holt. Secretary@rbl.community
Amazingly, in the 1650s, the Puritans banned Christmas, making it illegal to eat a mince pie or sing carols. Christmas did not become the festival we know until Victorian times, largely as a result of two publications: Clement Clarke Moore’s poem, published in 1823, called ‘A visit from St Nicholas’, in which St Nicholas was described for the ďŹ rst time, followed twenty years later by ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens, who encouraged charity in a harsh world. Although most of our traditions can be traced back to the Victorian era, Simon stated that some do relate to the birth of Christ, for example, the nativity scene, attributed to St Francis of Assisi, who re-enacted the scene in a cave in Italy on Christmas Eve, 1223. On behalf of the 35 members and 35 guests present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Simon for his incredibly entertaining and interesting talk. We shall next meet at the Links Hotel in West Runton on Tuesday 14 January when Peter Lawrence will give a talk called ‘Beneath the Streets of London’. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our monthly meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Land at Hempstead Road Consultation
Thank you to everyone who responded to the Land at Hempstead Road consultation. The majority of residents who responded wanted to keep the area as open space, with many supporting a more formal space such as gardens or a conservation and wildlife site. Norfolk County Council have now delayed the proposed auction until February, giving the Town Council plenty of opportunity to investigate the land and ascertain costs on future management in more detail. We hope to have a further update for you in the New Year, in the meantime the Town Council would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

How to Survive the Party Season. The festive party season comes upon us at the same time the cold and flu viruses are doing their rounds. Here are my 3 tips to help see you through the advent and beyond into the New Year. 1. Up your intake of antioxidants from fruit, vegetables and nuts. Aim to have 6-7 portions of vegetables per day and 2 portions of fruit. Eating cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts will provide vitamins A, C and E, important immune supporting nutrients. Peppers are also a good source of Vitamin C. A helping of mushrooms will increase your Vitamin D intake whilst adding blueberries and a few almonds to your breakfast will provide you with flavonoids, vitamins C, A and E plus Zinc, all essential for a healthy immune system. 2. Support your gut bacteria. Not only are the trillions of bacteria in your gut important for digestion, they also play an important role in immunity. If you support this fine balance of bacteria, they will help support you. Eat a variety of foods, especially fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Have some bio-live yoghurt, kefir, kimchi or fermented vegetables each day. Cut down on your sugar intake. Take a multi strain probiotic supplement during and after antibiotics. 3. Never arrive to parties on an empty stomach. When you have an event in the evening, make it a priority to have a balanced, healthy breakfast. Eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and avocado with some wholemeal toast or bio-live yoghurt, oats, seeds, nuts and some seasonal fruit or berries are ideal. Have a wholesome lunch including some veggies and drink plenty of water throughout the day. This will prevent you gorging on party foods and decreasing the absorption rate of alcohol. An Exhibition of Hidden Talents
An Exhibition of Hidden Talents was held by Holt & District Dementia Support in St. Andrew's Church during mid-November. It proved to be a great success, both for visitors and those exhibiting. For clients, carers and volunteers attending the weekly Tuesday morning 'Poppy Café', it brought back happy memories of activities, hobbies, places visited or exotic holidays. In some cases the exhibits provided opportunities to talk over and explore past common, but as yet unrecognised interests such as: sport, whether as sportsman or spectator; craftwork or art, as artist or admirer. The event certainly provoked interest for those living with dementia and enabled all Poppy Club attendees to reminisce over past experiences. The exhibition enabled visitors to St. Andrew's Church, whether attending the StArt Concert, an organ recital, Holt Christmas lights or a church service, to see some of the 'Hidden Talents' of those who live with dementia. It was especially fitting that the exhibition coincided with the memorial service of David Banham; and those attending the service were able to appreciate and acknowledge his love of photography, which turned out to be but one of his many talents. A huge thank you to all those who attend Holt and District Dementia Support for their contributions to the exhibition; and to the public who visited it.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY THE VIRGIN, KELLING
Ev ery one welc ome to join us
The Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month. St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. The Church contains many interesting features, including a 14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi. The Church draws a congregation partly from outside the Village from those who value traditional services using the words of the Book of Common Prayer.

Dear Friends, It is easy to celebrate Christmas and miss the main point. For many it has ceased to be a religious festival, a celebration of our Christian faith and heritage. Or else the story of the birth of Christ Jesus that we recall each year becomes so familiar that it fails to make its impact. Yet the truth behind what we celebrate ought to have a profound effect on our lives. This joyous feast celebrates none other than God’s entry into our world in human form in order that he may enter into our lives. The Christian faith proclaims a belief in a God who is not divorced from our world rather a God who came to dwell among us and embrace our humanity. He comes as gently as an infant child to share in our lives. As we reflect upon the child born to Mary we are drawn into a deeper understanding of the meaning of Christmas. We begin to realize that we are valued and loved and that there is a presence with us of one who overcomes all things. The knowledge and love of God in Christ Jesus makes all the difference in the world and not only brings us both joy and peace, it is the source of our motivation and aspiration to live better, to behave better, to work together better in building a fair and just society and world in which all people are valued and loved and know the difference between right and wrong, love and hate. We love because God first loved us. There are so many people in the world today who need to know both love and joy in their lives, they look for it in the most unlikely of places, only to be temporarily satisfied, never really finding it. Our sense of wellbeing, joy and happiness is surely to be found in the love of God. The gift of his Son, born of Blessed Mary is God’s gift of love to us, a love so strong, and so deep that we can hardly begin to comprehend it. In him we find true and eternal joy and happiness. At the centre of our secular and sacred celebration of Christmas is an invitation to enter more deeply into the true source of our joy and happiness, the mystery which is the child born in manger. The birth of Jesus is good news for all. His coming among us has made the love of God known for each and every individual and has enabled us all to live in a relationship of love with God the Father and to bear witness to that love in our lives.
May yours be a truly blessed Christmas. Fr. Howard

‘MY NORFOLK, MY HOLT' – with TONY LEECH on Thursday 16th January 11.00am – 12.00 noon
The next interview in the ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ series is with TONY LEECH (Chair of the Holt Society), on Thursday the 16th of January, between 11.00 and 12.00 noon, at Holt Library. Tony was born in 1945 in Birmingham. He came to Holt in 1978 and stayed. He attended School in, Birmingham. Read Biochemistry at Oxford University and remained there to complete a D.Phil (the Oxford Ph.D. degree) and to do post-doctoral work. He then spent a year (1976-1977) doing post-doctoral work at Brown University, Rhode Island USA. Returned to Oxford to do a Postgraduate Certificate of Education. Was appointed to staff at Gresham's School (to teach biology) in 1978 (never moved on!) He retired in 2005. Tony was originally attracted to Norfolk because of the wildlife having visited briefly as a child. It came up to expectations. He hadn't planned to stay long at a 'posh' school but found it very congenial. He was able to pursue all the extracurricular activities he enjoyed (forestry/conservation, wildlife, photography etc.) without being expected to perform on the playing fields. Also, his wife Barbara was offered a part-time teaching job at Gresham's. Once in Holt he discovered what a perfectly-sized community it is - big enough to support diverse cultural and social activities and a really good range of shops and services* but small enough to escape from easily. [* Just this morning I walked five minutes into Holt, bought meat at a real butchers, fruit and veg at a real greengrocers (without plastic packaging), picked up a pair of glasses for which I had been tested two days earlier and paid a cheque to the physiotherapist who had told my wife (who had forgotten her purse) ‘to drop it in next time you are passing’.] Tony is a member of: the Norfolk Wildlife Trust (Council member 2011-2017; Chairman of local (North Norfolk) Group for about five years; the Norfolk & Norwich Naturalists' Society (past Secretary and currently Publications Manager); the Holt Society (currently Chairman); River Glaven Conservation Group (committee member); and the British Mycological Society

WEYBOURNE WI ENJOYED A NOSTALGIC CHRISTMAS FILM SHOW
On Wednesday, 4th December, 46 members and friends of Weybourne WI met at the village hall for a nostalgic film show with a Christmas theme. The afternoon began with a short business meeting and then soon rogressed to the highlight of the afternoon, which was presented by Phil Slater. Phil has a vast collection of vintage film clips and had combined a collection of several to entertain us. These included excerpts from early Disney films, music by the Glenn Miller Band and Bing Crosby and an advertisement promoting the purchase of ‘war bonds’, plus many more. A short film showing various performing animals at a circus, made us all realise how things have changed in the intervening years. Celia Howe gave a vote of thanks. After the film show there were sausage rolls, mince pies and Prosecco for us all to enjoy, with the option of tea and coffee for those who were driving! The raffle was particularly well supported, as there were so many lovely prizes on offer and all proceeds will be donated to our annual charity – Lilac Ladies.
The afternoon concluded with the rendition of some Christmas carols, which left us all feeling very festive and Celia thanked everyone for attending. One of our visitors from Cromer WI said how much they had enjoyed the afternoon.

WEA Wells Branch - Spring Term 2020
As some of you know our spring term normally starts with a 7 week ‘long' course beginning in late January. Sadly, that isn’t the case this time round because WEA hasn’t been able to find us a course and tutor that we think will appeal to our student group, but we do have two day schools organised. The first of these, ‘Country houses and their Collections’, is on Saturday the 25th of January when our tutor will be Norwich-based art historian Dr. Kajsa Berg. By the 18th century country houses such as Felbrigg, Holkham and Houghton Hall held some of the most impressive art collections in Britain. These were the product of a new fashion for educating the young gentry by sending them on a Grand Tour of Europe. There they honed their tastes and emptied their pockets, bringing back paintings, sculptures and books among other things. This day school will explore the travels, tastes and knowledge of the English gentleman as illustrated by the collections in these and other great houses.
Our second day school will be held on Saturday, March the 7th when Mark Felton will return to Wells to talk about the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989 (we’ll publish details of that nearer the time). Both day courses will be held in the Friends Meeting House, Wells-next-the Sea and each costs £18. They run from 9.45am until 4.00pm with a one hour break for lunch. You can enrol online now by going to www.wea.org.uk/eastern and entering ‘Wells-next-the-Sea’ in the ‘town/postcode’ box at the top of the page. This will take you to the Wells courses. Click on the ‘view details’ button next to the course you wish to attend and then follow the ‘Enrol online’ link at the bottom of the page. Alternatively - and perhaps more easily - you can enrol by phoning 0300 303 3464. Or just turn up on the day. If you need help, advice or further details please contact our Secretary, Annie Whitelaw, at anniewhitelaw53@icloud.com or on 07856 792186. She'll be very pleased to hear from you.

Rogue builder found guilty
A rogue Norfolk builder has been found guilty at Norwich Magistrates Court on November 27th of an offence under the Consumer Protection from unfair Trading Regulations 2008. David Mark Fysh, 41, of Woodwark Avenue, King’s Lynn, charged a Norfolk homeowner more than ÂŁ20,000 for a building extension but did not buy all the materials he’d been given money for, did not complete the job, and would not give a refund for the incomplete work. The court heard that a building surveyor estimated the value of the work David Fysh actually did at ÂŁ5,000. The project progressed slowly over a number of months however the surveyor estimated that the work carried out should only have taken about 5 days. Sophie Leney, Head of Norfolk County Council Trading Standards, said: “The way this trader operated fell far short of expectations and today’s verdict reflects that. “David Fysh charged for work he did not do and for materials he did not buy and refused to give any refunds. This was not only completely unacceptable under consumer protection law, but also very distressing for his victims.â€? Magistrates decided to proceed with the case today after David Fysh failed to attend, having also failed to attend court on a previous occasion. Sentencing will take place at a later date. There are a number of things that people can do to help protect themselves against rogue traders: C - Compare use Norfolk Trusted Trader and get three quotes. H - History Ask for the traders’ references, recommendations and reviews and make sure you check them out. E - Establish the details What is being done, by Who, by When and for How much? Remember that a quote is more binding than an estimate. C - Contract Ensure everything is recorded including work and payment schedules and the paperwork contains the traders correct name and address. K - Keep all of the paperwork This may be needed should anything go wrong. Consumers can find a Norfolk Trusted Trader by visiting www.norfolk.gov.uk/trustedtrader or by calling 0344 8008020.

In addition, nine people were arrested for failing to provide a specimen, while 11 people were arrested for being unfit to drive through drink and drugs. Chief Inspector Kris Barnard, head of the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Roads and Armed Policing Team, said: "We want everyone to enjoy a safe and happy festive season and so this is one of our most important annual campaigns. Despite our constant warnings and the publicity around the dangers and consequences of drink and drug-driving, too many people are still prepared to put their lives and those of other road users at risk. "It is sad to see that within the first 24 hours we have seen five people across both Norfolk and Suffolk stopped for drink/drug driving offences. If you are responsible you must face the consequences, which can include a serious or fatal collision. "Driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs is not a victimless act. Our officers and colleagues from across the emergency services have attended numerous collisions in which people have been seriously injured or killed, where alcohol or illegal substances have been the cause of the incident. "Visiting the family of a serious collision victim to tell them their loved one has died or has been taken to hospital in a critical condition is perhaps At the newly refurbished: the most difficult task our officers have to undertake. Financial Settlement on Divorce – what rights do I have?
Whilst obtaining a divorce is often straightforward, agreeing what is going to happen to the family finances is usually more complicated. Although the divorce and finances are technically two separate sets of proceedings, they are usually looked at alongside one another. By the nature of being married, spouses have financial claims against one another until they are formally dismissed by the Court. It is important for parties to understand their rights and entitlements in advance as it can help in managing expectations and often speed up the process. It is hoped that at this stage, former spouses can really begin to think about the future, putting any conflict behind them. When looking at the finances, the first step is to ascertain what is in the family pot. This will include matrimonial assets. These are assets that were built up during the period of the marriage. These could include, but are not limited to, the family home, other properties, pensions, savings, investments, business assets and vehicles. Sometimes there are also non-matrimonial assets. These are financial assets which were acquired before or after the relationship, inheritances and gifts. There is scope for non-matrimonial assets to be treated differently, and potentially excluded, but it will depend on the individual circumstances of the case and often the party’s needs. There is no hard and fast rule for calculating the financial settlement. Each case is judged on its own merits. The law focuses on achieving a fair outcome which can be very different from one family to the next, and whilst the starting point is 50/50, this doesn’t necessarily mean half and half. There will often be a range of different ways in which the assets can be divided and the advantages and disadvantages of those will need to be explored. It is also important for you to consider what your preferred option would be and the practicalities of that. The Court’s first consideration is any minor children. The Court will want details about where and whom any children will be living so that this can be taken into account when looking at the type of housing required to meet their needs. The length of the marriage is also a key consideration. If the parties lived together prior to the marriage then this can be taken into account provided that it “flows seamlessly into marriage”. Age is also a factor along with income and earning capacity. For example, if one party is better equipped to “regenerate” their finances or meet their needs from their income then there may be an argument to say that they should receive less. The Court will also consider contributions made by the parties to the marriage. There is often a misconception that this simply relates to financial contributions. It is wider than that. It takes into account contributions to the family as a whole. For example, caring for children is clearly a vital and equal contribution. One asset that often causes confusion is pensions and how they should be dealt with on a divorce. A survey recently carried out by Shoosmiths found that a third of married couples do not know about pension sharing on divorce. This is a worrying statistic, particular for women who separate after taking a career break to start a family, as this can have a huge impact when it comes to long term financial security. The research shows that on the whole, pensions are often overlooked with the focus being on physical assets. When it comes to pensions on divorce there are different options but the most common are pension sharing and pension offsetting. Pension sharing is where one party’s pension is split and a percentage transferred to the other spouse to “top up” their pot, usually either to equalise pension values or income upon retirement. Pension offsetting is the idea that cash is received now instead of a pension share. Pensions can be complex assets and it is important that you seek specialist advice. However, the take away point is that former spouses may be entitled to a proportion of their spouse’s pension if they split up. It is hoped that former spouses are able to come to an agreement about how the family finances are split, whether that is achieved by them discussing it directly, going to mediation or having negotiations through solicitors. However, if former spouses cannot agree then they can ask the Court to make a decision, although this should be viewed as the last resort. The family finances can be tricky and it is important to take specialist advice. At Clapham & Collinge we have a dedicated team of experts who are able to provide you with all of the necessary information, support and legal advice on divorce and the family finances.

Introducing Love Holt
High Kelling Garden Club
‘Town Diary’
On Monday 9th December our club held its Christmas Dinner at High Kelling Village Hall. The evening started with a glass of Bucks Fizz or fruit juice. Christine Foxwell and her team provided us with delicious festive food - Christmas Pie or nut roast served with celeriac mash, sprouts, green beans, peas and carrots. For dessert we could either have fresh fruit salad, cheese and biscuits or individual Christmas trifle, which had a shortbread base, a layer of dried soaked fruits and was topped with custard, cream and crunchy sprinkles - gorgeous! For those who still had room there were mince pies, chocolate mints and Turkish delight to accompany tea or coffee. During the evening, harpist Alan Heath entertained us with a variety of songs, including ballads from his native southern states of America. Our Christmas raffle was a bumper one thanks to the generosity of members. Our next meeting is on Monday 10th January when Ian Bedford will speak about bugs in the garden. Guests and new members are always welcome. For details of our club please contact Tanya at hkgcsecretary@gmail.com
From January, Love Holt and UCAN are launching a ‘Town Diary’. The diary, on the Love Holt website, is for everyone, both those organising a public event in Holt, and those looking for an event to attend. The core aim of the Town Diary is to avoid date clashes for the same potential audience. Key benefits will be: • Residents and visitors can easily see what is going on in town. • It will help avoid duplication and clashes of opportunity. It also recognises the Love Holt website as an important community information platform. Building on the success of the Town Fair, the diary will be an important way of increasing inclusivity and of helping to make putting on events even more effective and efficient for everyone concerned. We hope that this is something everyone will find helpful. Both regular and special one-off events will be included. But we will only list Holt town events that are open to the public. The more that people use the diary the more effective it will be. Any duplication with the Chronicle’s excellent and much wider listing can only be helpful in publicising what is going on. The Love Holt website ‘Town Diary’ page gives details of how to submit events and what information is needed. Entries will need to be standardised, limited in content, listing basic information and details. You do not need to be a registered member of the Love Holt community to submit a diary entry, though it would be lovely if you considered becoming one. It costs nothing offers town-wide perks plus a monthly ‘what’s on’ emailer too. Submissions can be made now for January 2020 and beyond. The diary will be updated weekly by volunteers.

As another year draws to a close it’s the perfect time for a little note to say thank you to everyone who’s continued to support us throughout 2019. It’s been a very busy and successful period and we are very grateful to the happy customers we have had through the door. We wanted to leave you with a festive special and what could be better than this absolutely wonderful and ingenious way to finish any Christmas meal. See you in 2020! 01263 512412 Ingredients 250 millilitres double cream 750 millilitres single cream 8 egg yolks 200 grams caster sugar 1/8th teaspoon salt 2 large mince pies, blended so pastry is a coarse crumb
Method Pour the double cream and single cream into a heavy aucepan, place over medium-low heat and heat until barely simmering, stirring frequently. Turn the heat down to low. Whisk together the egg yolks, sugar and salt in a large bowl until thoroughly combined. Slowly pour about 125ml hot cream mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly. Repeat three times more, whisking thoroughly before adding each additional 125ml hot cream to the egg yolk mixture. Pour the egg yolk mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining hot cream and whisk constantly over medium-low heat until the mixture thickens and will coat the back of a spoon, 5 to 8 minutes. Do not let mixture boil. Pour into a bowl and allow to cool for about 20 minutes; place in refrigerator and chill overnight. The next day add the mince pie crumb , pour into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's directions. Holt and District Probus Club
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Well – it was Christmas, and members of Holt and District Probus Club met in Holt for their festive meal of Turkey and trimmings and Christmas Pud – all of which was dished up cheerfully by the staff at The Feathers Hotel. After the meal, Hilary Cox spoke about her life - ‘From Pub to Pulpit’. Brought up in Mundesley where her parents ran a pub, Hilary fell naturally into the pub way of life and in her teens was winning ‘Barmaid of the Year’ contests, etc. After a while, listening to a sermon in church, she thought ‘I could do better than this’ and trained to become a Methodist preacher – which is a vocation that she pursues to this day. In due course, Hilary became a Town Councillor, and a District Councillor and a County Councillor – for a while she was a ‘triple hatter ‘serving on all 3 Councils. She was Chair of Norfolk County Council and was involved in starting the annual Crab and Lobster Festival, as well as being concerned with walking and cycling, scouting, and the Royal British Legion among others. Hilary illustrated her talk with photographs of herself in the various stages of her life. Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782. Refer also to https://holtprobusclub.wordpress.com/

Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard
Normal for Norfolk? a Norfolk riposte
"Normal for Norfolk" is a pejorative expression formed by journalists which comes with the inference that we are so inbred that we "can't tell a Fordson from a Ferrari" (Jeremy Clarkson) or that we are simply "deranged" Rod Liddle (In the Sunday Times a couple of years ago). Their editors may think these insults are acceptable, but it is maddening for us, in our beloved county, to be pilloried without the right of reply. Norfolk is famed for its humour and the riposte is one of its keenest weapons. Among our many fables is a riposte which perfectly fits the duo I have mentioned. Both offenders are Yorkshiremen, Clarkson from Doncaster and Liddle from Middlesbrough, so a story involving their county and ours is the perfect sally. It should first be mentioned that in their idiom the definite article is often dropped e.g "I took a look around the class" is reduced to "I took a look round class." And their pronunciation of the word "class" is said with a flat 'a' to rhyme with "ass", while we say the same word to rhyme a vulgar word which means posterior. Jasper Hardcastle (pronounced "Addcassle", note the two flat 'a's) was a Yorkshireman and an inspector of schools for the eastern area, here is his account. "I was getting particularly bad reports about a particular Norfolk school and decided to pay surprise visit. When I got there, I took a look around this class o' boys and could tell at glance that everyone o' lads was wooden-top. I picked on thickest lookin' one o' lot and made me way over to him. On me way, I had a change o' heart. I thought it will be no good me askin' him a logical question, so I'll ask him a nonsense question and we'll laugh us way through it. I sad to him: 'Look lad, if the road is six hundred yards wide and three miles high how old am I?'" He looked at me through his rheumy Norfolk eyes and replied 'forty-tew'. I was staggered and said to him 'well I am forty-two, lad. Would you like to give me your method o' working?' and he said: "Yeah, I're got a brother at home wos's twenty-one and he's only half a bladdy-fewl!"
Holt & District Flower Club
For our last meeting of the year Marie Munday travelled all the way from Stroud in Gloucestershire to take us on a ‘Walk in a Winter Wonderland’! She did some wonderful arrangements, from a window in a Ski Lodge to a Christmas Bauble, Carol Singers, Christmas Trees with lights and icicles and to finish some beautiful gift boxes containing hand tied bouquets and ribbons made from Aspidistra leaves. Before the demonstration our Chairman Amanda Seales awarded certificates for 50 years membership of a Flower Club to Jill Aubin, Diane Peart and Ada Fisher who is the founder member of Holt & District Flower Club. Amanda also showed us a wooden sign engraved with 'Holt & District Flower Club' which Diane Randell and her husband Tom have commissioned and given to the club for future use when we enter competitions such as the Norfolk Show. We don’t meet in January so our next meeting will be on Monday 3rd February. We will start with the AGM at 6.30pm followed by a demonstration by Jacquie Aldous of Swanton Morley.
To see further details of our programme and the club please visit our website ww.holtflowerclub.co.uk You can find us on Facebook at Holt & District Flower Club or telephone Amanda Seales 01263 861725. Gresham’s pupils get creative in their support of local charities
Pupils at Gresham’s School, Holt, are getting festive and creative as they raise money for local charities, this Christmas. The School’s Charity Committee’s chosen Charity of the Year is The People’s Picnic. This grass roots run organisation is 'dedicated to making sure the less fortunate and vulnerable are not forgotten in society' and is run and funded entirely by volunteers in Norwich. Gresham’s pupils are dedicating all their activities over the coming year to one charity in order to make a big impact on a specific cause. The 12 months of fundraising got off to a flying start this term with some unique events and activities; A cookbook has been written and produced by the school's charity committee and is packed full of mouth-watering recipes by pupils and parents from around the world. It includes classic main courses such as lasagne and delicious deserts like banana bread and cheesecake. It is being sold at the School with proceeds going to The People's Picnic. For the past three years a group of pupils have recorded a single in the autumn term under the name ‘Gresham’s Girls’ with proceeds going to the Charity of that year. These have traditionally been available on music platforms to download. This year, an 8 track CD including previously released tracks along with three new arrangements of songs has been released. A very popular homemade Pizza Night was organised by the Charity Committee. It offered a great opportunity to fire up the pizza ovens and for the pupils to try their hand at pizza making with all proceeds from the evening going to The People’s Picnic. Most recently, this week kicked off with the annual Christmas Jumper Day where pupils donned lively festive jumpers rather than their usual school uniform, in lieu of a donation to The People’s Picnic. The Gresham’s Charity Committee has also asked the school community to become part of the Giveaway Gang by bringing unwrapped presents to school to be distributed across the county by the Giveaway Gang (www.giveawaygang.co.uk).

Extra Lights Express
07376 085889 ~ Melton Constable
The North Norfolk Railway has reacted to the unprecedented demand for seats on the new Norfolk Lights Express by adding a further 10 trains. Demand for seats has outstripped all expectations with the initial 55 trains approaching full. The decision to add a further 10 trains was not taken lightly but the feedback from passengers travelling has been so enthusiastic that it was considered the additional trains would provide further opportunities for those not able to get a seat on the published programme. The Norfolk Lights Express which operates from Sheringham through to Holt and return offers the opportunity to experience an amazing light show which illuminates the landscape as the train meanders along the route. All this is set to music creating an enchanting evening experience. The train is covered with a Kilometre of rope lights and has around 2.5 miles of cabling to support them. Each train has seating for over 200 visitors. The services will now continue to operate through to the 5th January 2020 offering a further 2000 seats for sale. During the day the award-winning heritage railway transports customers back in time on steam and diesel trains through some of North Norfolk’s most picturesque countryside, however as the light fades, the railway will be transformed as The Norfolk Lights Express steams into town on selected evenings during November and December. The Norfolk Lights Express is one of a limited number of operations of this product and the only one taking place in East Anglia. Hugh Harkett, Managing Director, who witnessed the secret trial operation back in June stated: email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

“It was unbelievable. While the external view is incredible, the lighting and scenes along the track will, I am sure, make this a real trip to remember for our visitors of all ages. The train’s external lights provide amazing technicolour effects for passengers as the train passes through the cuttings along the route.â€? The Norfolk Lights Express will complement the railway’s popular family event, the Santa Special trains, which have also been totally rejuvenated with many new attractions including Reindeer and will continue to operate during the day. The Norfolk Lights Express departs from Sheringham Station, each journey lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes. Tickets cost ÂŁ15.00 per person.

A LOST WORLD by Leslie Kinsley
BRISTON part 4. Mr Herne was the seed merchant, and I remember the huge building where he had his business. Over each window was a large sign to show what he sold. There was carrot, swede, sugar beet and turnips but not wheat or barley because that came to the farmers by the ton. Beyond the Pavillion and the Recreation ground, Mr and Mrs Mears kept the Green Man. The beer there had to be brought up from the cellar. Mrs Mears was the Boss there and loud and bossy she was! Once again Mr Mears had another source of income; he had a small lorry and delivered coal. Further along the road from Briston to Thurning, you had to cross the railway line. The man in the signal box would open a small gate for you and beyond there was Mr Wegg the undertaker. As well as buidings where they made the coffins, there was a tin building where bodies were stored before burial. If you were too poor for your family to hire a hearse your body was taken to church on a bier on a hand cart. This used to be kept at the church but I am not sure if it is still there. When my Father died and we buried him in the churchyard at Briston, I wanted to smarten up his grave. My Father kept an allotment in Melton which was his pride and joy. We called it his ‘Ponderosa’. I cut some turf from there and set it over the bare earth, but when I went to check it soon after, I found that someone had moved it to another grave. I was in such a rage! I went after Mr Wegg as I was sure he was to blame. He moved it back the same day! The last premises of Briston I remember was Sid Kidd’s scrapyard. He dealt with horses too. He was one of thirteen children and had been born in a caravan. He always dressed from head to toe in black, even his trilby hat was black. He wore lots of gold rings on his fingers. He was a rare fighter especially after drinking at Briston Fair, and as he was really large and powerful no one crossed him if they could help it. His wife was only known by a word beginning with ‘n’ which is not allowed now. It was a descriptive nickname which was not used in malice, even her son refers to her by that name. Mrs Kidd was as keen on fighting as her husband and as handy! When the Briston Fair was on, the local Policeman Mr Burgess would stand by Ivan Dennis’ forge around pub chuck out time in case of these fights. He would tell Sid off and Sid, who could have beaten him easily, always backed down. Sid’s wife sold pegs and pins from a basket whilst the fair was on, but she did have competition from a Mrs Grey who lived in a tin hut at Saxthorpe. She always wore a long black dress. us boys noticed that if she stood still for a minute or two in the roadway, when she moved on there would be a puddle there. I am afraid we used to run behind her, asking her to repeat this!
Merry Christmas From Toll Barn Vets !!!
Christmas is fun for all the family and that definitely includes all our pets! However, Christmas is often a busy time for our 24/7 on-site emergency service as there are plenty of hidden dangers lurking during the festivities which we should all be aware of to help keep our pets safe. Christmas Cake, Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls all contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. These should never be fed to pets as they can cause kidney damage and in severe cases kidney failure. They can also contain alcohol which can cause signs of intoxication as well as dangerous drops in blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body temperature. Not all dogs will be affected but there is no way of knowing which animals will suffer from toxicity so they are best completely avoided. Macadamia nuts can also be toxic causing neurological signs such as weakness, depression, tremors and vomiting within 12 hours of being eaten. Onions and garlic can also be harmful (even when cooked) with signs such as vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia). Many Christmas dinners include sage and onion stuffing or onion based gravy so it is best to avoid giving these “left overs” to pets. Chocolate decorations are frequently used on trees and in stockings. Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine (similar to caffeine) which is toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels). Depending on the amount and type of chocolate eaten signs range from vomiting and diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias). If your pet eats chocolate it is important to be able to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate has been eaten as this will help us calculate whether a toxic dose has been reached. Some foods such as sugar free gum and diabetic biscuits contain xylitol. Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar which is often used as a sweetener in low carbohydrate and diabetic products. When pets eat xylitol their blood sugar level can drop rapidly causing lethargy and weakness and in severe cases, seizures. Xylitol can also cause liver failure in some dogs. The signs of this can take several days to develop. We would advise urgent veterinary attention for any pet who is suspected to have eaten products containing xylitol. Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell. This means they will often hunt out bones, foil or string with meat juices from the rubbish bin or counter tops. These bones are often brittle and splinter easily which can cause blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine whilst foil or string can cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine. Many of these (and other) foods also contain high levels of fat. This can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and more seriously increases the risk of email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk
34
pancreatitis. There are also several household dangers which are more common at Christmas. Tinsel and tree ornaments are particularly attractive play things to cats and puppies. If eaten these will often cause blockages and twists within the intestines of your pet requiring immediate surgery to remove the material. Christmas ornaments will also often break if played with by pets. This can cause choking, cuts within the mouth and damage to the intestines if eaten. Christmas trees themselves are also potentially toxic with pine needles causing irritation of the mouth (which may show as excessive drooling), vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness. Naughty puppies and kittens have also been known to injure themselves climbing Christmas trees or knocking them over so it is always advisable to have a barrier to prevent access to the tree, as well as supervision! Candles and fairy lights are always appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns. Make sure electric lights and candles are always placed out of reach of naughty paws! Heated oils create pleasant aromas around the house but can cause burns to the tongue and mouth if licked so make sure they are placed away from inquisitive animals. Festive bouquets often include Lilies but ingestion of the plant or plant pollen can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat comes into contact with Lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t-shirt on the cat to prevent them licking and ingesting more pollen and contact your vet for advice. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression. Mistletoe has been known to cause collapse, changes in heart rate and erratic behaviour following ingestion. Poinsettia sap has irritant properties which can cause blistering of the mouth and stomach when eaten. We would recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets! Most of these potential dangers are treatable if caught early enough so if you have any concerns about your pet during this festive period our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Christmas and New Year on our normal surgery phone number (01692 407126). We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas!

With No. 275 (author, John Brown) is the last of 3 in our pre-Christmas competition, a Miniature (less than 8 units) with a nice Key. This should make life interesting as, whereas Nos. 273-4 have been worth 2 points each, this one is Difficulty 5 (i.e. 5 points) – so there is a scenario where some solvers can catch up and win a prize.

Walking Rugby Under Flood Lights at Fakenham
North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club
Walking Rugby at Fakenham started out as a summer sport, but it has been so popular that it has continued into the winter and is continuing year-round. The group is typically 40% ladies to 60% men but on occasions the ladies have outnumbered the men; demonstrating that this is very much a mixed sport suitable for all abilities and fitness levels. The health benefits have been recognised by local NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups, where it has been recognised of particular benefit to those who are who are at high risk of developing or currently have Type 2 diabetes. The Walking Rugby Group meets every Wednesday at Fakenham Rugby Club with the first session free. This is a fun team game that is accessible to people of all ages; the group has 88% of its members over 50 and several much older. It is attractive to both ex-players and those who are completely new to the game. Walking Rugby is a much simpler version of the traditional game of rugby. It is much less physical than a standard game of rugby, the aim is to participate, compete and most importantly, for players to enjoy themselves, which everyone seems to do. All sessions start and finish with some gentle warm-up and warm-down exercises to help with overall fitness levels. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the pace and competitiveness of the game, while former rugby or netball players will welcome the flexibility walking rugby offers. As the name suggests, players must walk, not run but it can still be played at a good pace.
Newcomers are welcome on any Wednesday, from 6:50 until 8 o’clock. Contact: Jeffrey Pearce jdpearce@btinternet.com
We saw the Vikings taking a small team of 3 boys and 8 girls over the weekend. We had 50 individual events in which the team came away with 38 personal best times, which is a 76% success rate, we came away with 7 gold 3 sliver and 5 bronze medals. We also achieved 1 regional time this weekend. I was so very pleased to see what all the hard work we’re doing is now paying off.
North Norfolk Vikings next competition is in January at the Norfolk County Championships held at uEA Sports Park in January 2020. Let’s keep up the hard work and improve even more then we have done already.
Well done to all those for taking part at the Winter Wipeout meet.
Special thanks to the team managers, parents and all swimmers.
I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
My mother cast one of her pupils as the innkeeper for the Nativity Play. All the pupil had to do was tell Joseph, “There is no room at the inn.” But during the performance—after Joseph begged for a room for his pregnant wife—the boy didn’t have the heart to turn him down. “Well,” he said, “if it’s so urgent, come on in.” email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk
North Norfolk Vikings were in action over the weekend at the Winter Wipeout meet held at the uEA Sports Park in Norwich. For the swimmers at Vikings this was the last chance to improve on and achieve time for counties, also a chance to achieve regional times which are held in Norwich uEA Sports Park in April next year.
Many thanks, Sam Watts Lead coach.

Rowing for Fun!
HOLT TAXIS HOLT TAXIS
The winter rowing season at Barton Turf is in full swing with sociable outings up and down the Broads waterways. The only variation is the preparation for competitive events. At the time of writing, the men and women of the club are fresh from a hard morning’s row at the 2019 Carrow Cup event. Saturday 7th December saw the ladies in Hoi Larntan and the men in Bluejacket take on a range of other clubs in the race from Pull’s Ferry past many Norwich landmarks. This was a great race with the ladies achieving an outstanding row finishing ahead of their male counterparts in a hard-fought competition. Well done to them! See the club website, crablakeney.wordpress.com, for some pictures of the event taken before, during and after the race. There are also some more photographs to be seen on Instagram and Facebook. There are other events proposed for next year quite apart from the racing calendar. There will be a Valentine’s Day voyage on the Broads on 14th February and a Broads Tour, between June 29th and July 3rd, during which many corners of the waterways will be explored in pleasant company. On the social front, there will be a gathering in The King’s Arms, Blakeney, on Friday 31st January at 7pm when club members can come along, buy a meal at the bar, and chat the evening away. You could be part of the fun. There is no obligation to race, just be prepared to meet people of all ages who enjoy the growing sport of skiff rowing. Sample three rows as a guest before deciding whether to join. You don’t have to be an experienced rower and coaching is always available. Look for further details on crablakeney.wordpress.com. If the smiling rowers shown on the web site arouse your interest, then contact Humphrey on 075452 371469. Make it a New Year’s Resolution to join Blakeney Rowing Club. Barry Howes.

Christmas Facts
According to tradition, you should eat one mince pie on each of the 12 days of Christmas to bring good luck. The word “Carol” actually means dance or song of praise and joy, and they used to be sung during all four seasons, but the tradition of only singing them at Christmas is the only one to survive. According to a survey conducted in 2016, 57% of adults in the UK would gladly sacrifice seeing relatives on Christmas day if it meant they could spend more time on Facebook. For a Christmas to be officially classified as “white” a single snow flake needs to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25th December on the rooftop of the Met Office HQ in London. The typical number of calories in your average Christmas dinner: 957.

Holt Bellringers to Ring Out the Old and In the New!
As we have done for the past couple of years, the Holt Bellringers will be Ringing Out the Old Year and In the New Year! This means we will ring the bells from around 11.45pm on New Year’s Eve, stop just before midnight, ring the largest bell 12 times at midnight, and then everyone joins in joyfully! It is a super way to start the New Year, do please pop into your gardens and listen out for us! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all from the Holt Bellringers. Sue Morton, Tower Captain.
