Holt’s Very Own February Film Festival

Friday February the 21st to Sunday the 23rd inclusive, and monthly ‘Arts Forum’ With Christmas and New Year suddenly over, January also has a way of slipping away un-noticed, with that deceptive feeling that perhaps winter is over. However, February can be bleak, and the days can be long, cold and dreary, with drawn-out evenings and too much time spent in on our own. That’s where the next UCAN and Holt Community Centre initiative comes in, with: The next ‘Arts Forum’ interview on Friday February the 21st, from 7.00 – 9.00pm, at the Community Centre – launching the ‘February Film Festival’ (interviewee lined-up but still to be conďŹ rmed). The Forums are a series of monthly focused discussions/interviews with a person involved in some signiďŹ cant way in the arts. There is time available, at the end of the interview to ask questions, have a drink, mingle, make new contacts, and share thoughts and ideas. (Free but donations welcome.) Leading neatly into the ‘February Film Festival’, over the weekend of the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of February 2020, featuring or celebrating ďŹ lms connected with Norfolk/East Anglia. All the ďŹ lms programmed having a Norfolk or East Anglian link. Proposed programme to include: ‘The Final Reel’, narrated by the late John Hurt, a feature length documentary about our love aair with cinema. http://norfolkatthepictures.org.uk/the-ďŹ nal-reel/; ‘Lucy Lavers – Return to Dunkirk 75 years on’ After years of neglect, Lucy Lavers was restored in time to take part in the 75th Anniversary

Position Required

Experienced maintenance manager looking for rural location in UK/Europe.

I currently manage a large private residential estate, I do all ground works, electrics, plumbing, landscaping and security. I enjoy meeting and helping residents and liaising with the directors, but I also very much enjoy being in the countryside. I do freelance work as a tree surgeon and I am licenced to handle herbicides and pesticides and for many years I have done volunteer conservation work in Estonia. I enjoy new challenges and while I have always had good relations with contractors and the local council I work well on my own initiative. Excellent references and full details of present job description available upon request.

Return to Dunkirk; ‘Drowning by Numbers’, a ďŹ lm directed by Peter Greenaway, centred on three married women, each of whom successively drowns her husband. The ďŹ lm is set and was shot in and around Southwold; ‘In Love with Alma Cogan’, a British romantic comedy written and directed by Tony Britten, ďŹ lmed in and around the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier; ‘The Goob’, directed by Guy Myhill from his own screenplay. "Goob" Taylor is a school leaver with an abusive stepfather, trapped in rural poverty in Norfolk. It was ďŹ lmed in Norfolk, including a disused diner at Necton and stock car racing scenes at Swaffham Raceway;‘AkenďŹ eld’ (and ‘AkenďŹ eld Revisited’), a ďŹ lm made by Peter Hall, based loosely on the book AkenďŹ eld: Portrait of an English Village by Ronald Blythe (1969). The ďŹ lm is a work of ďŹ ction, based on Blythe’s story. Most of the ďŹ lming was done at weekends, when the cast of local people were available, and shooting took almost a year – following the changing seasons in the process; ‘All The King’s Men’a feature-length World War I drama starring David Jason. The ďŹ lm and book are based on the story of the "Sandringham Company", which included men from the King's estate at Sandringham House. The battalion suered heavy losses in action at Gallipoli and a myth grew up later that the unit had advanced into a mist and simply disappeared; ‘The Go Between’, a British romantic ďŹ lm directed by Joseph Losey with a screenplay, by Harold Pinter. The ďŹ lm was shot at Melton Constable Hall, Heydon and Norwich. Food and refreshments will be available, before and between ďŹ lm showings, throughout the weekend, so no need to even leave the venue. We hope this event will help build the appetite for the regular monthly Community Cinema Films at Holt Community Centre (usually on the last Wednesday of the month), as well as increasing the sense of Holt as a festival destination for the arts, with enough potential Norfolk and East Anglian based ďŹ lms identiďŹ ed to furnish another ‘February Film Festival’ in 2021. Tickets available on the door or in advance: ÂŁ5.00 per ďŹ lm or ÂŁ30 for a weekend ticket for 8 ďŹ lms. Tickets available from mid-January. For more information 01263 710779.

County Councillor News from County Councillor Sarah Butikofer

sarah.butikofer.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk or 07968 897235

Where on earth does the time go? Happy New Year everyone I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas? Climate Change continues to be a key focus on the agenda both at NNDC and at County Hall and with the terrible fires in Australia that we have witnessed over recent weeks, and the flooding in other parts of the world is it any wonder. Some residents may have seen that at the last Full Council meeting of the year we were visited at County Hall by the ‘Red Rebels’. For anyone who has not seen them they are ghostly-white figures cloaked in scarlet-red, who drift gracefully through the areas they have chosen, demonstrating almost soundlessly and in an ethereal manner, but their impact has to be seen to be understood. They came to watch over the County Council as it announced its new initiatives to start tackling Climate Change. Only this week we were reminded again how very vulnerable our own coastline is here in North Norfolk, with the massive landslip in Trimingham. So I am pleased to be able to confirm on a more positive note that NNDC are in the process of planting an extra 10,000 trees in Holt Country Park and at Pretty Corner Woods. There is a lot more to do but this is a step in the right direction supporting our green spaces. At the end of last year I had a chance to visit ‘The Treehouse’ in Holt a new community project opening a zero waste shop and a community café at the old Sure Start centre, it was wonderful to meet and see first-hand the work being undertaken by two inspirational ladies. They have such drive and enthusiasm I am sure it will soon be as successful as the many other community organisations in the town. They will also be running workshops on waste management and recycling that we will all be able to learn from – anyone heard of Bokashi? I certainly hadn’t before I met them. Finally the County Council and Boundary Commission are currently consulting on new County Division boundaries, and we are likely to lose a seat here in North Norfolk due to the higher population densities in other areas, more information on this when it becomes available. As always if I can be of any help or assistance please don’t hesitate to get in touch, until next time.

News from The Venue

What a busy and lively festive season we have had, with events such as the Community Christmas Evening, Christmas Bingo, Community Christmas Day Lunch and finishing off with a cracking New Years Eve Party, enjoyed by over 100 people! It feels like a whirlwind of activities at the Venue lately, and of course none of this would be possible without the stellar team of volunteers who plan, put together and carry out all the necessary work to make these events go without a hitch. We have had an amazing year at the Centre, but none of it would be possible without this very special team who give up their time to make it all happen. Special thanks also to Iain Wilson of Byfords, Charles Sanders of Sanders Coaches and Lee Newstead of Adnams for help with New Year’s Eve – without your sponsorship and backing we could not have delivered such a great party for our community. Chairing the Holt Community Centre Committee this year has taught me a lot of important lessons, but perhaps the one that stands out the most is that our town has some very special people in it, who care more about the bigger picture than themselves, who give of their time and expertise for the good of others, and who genuinely care about people. Holt has experienced a year where a lot of joined up thinking has been going on, where collaboration and cooperation are becoming the new normal, and it is producing a culture that is very exciting to be a part of. This year, the Community Centre Charity has been very intentional in supporting and linking up with as many other initiatives and organisations as possible, in order to support the town and the good things that are growing within it. We hope you will agree with us that the Venue is becoming a much more vibrant and exciting place, with new regular groups meeting there, more events being put on, and a determined drive to improve and maintain the facility for the good of the town and its residents. We are having a relatively quiet January for us, in order to effectively plan for the rest of the year, which is already shaping up to be very busy indeed. With a new exciting Film Festival in February, Great Holt Bake Off, Arts Forum Evenings, Art Exhibitions and Workshops, Holt Festival, The Forties Weekend and a programme of fundraising events such as Bingo, themed food nights and Murder Mystery Evenings, there’s a lot to plan! If you would like to get involved with any aspect of the running of the Centre, please do get in touch – we are always pleased to welcome new volunteers to our family of supporters. There are loads of ways to join in, regardless of your background, experience or capabilities, so please do call us, we would love to hear from you. Call 01263 713427 or email holtcommunitycentre@gmail.com.

A fabulous festive feast was enjoyed by 100 people at the 5th Annual Community Christmas Day Lunch at The Venue, Holt Community and Arts Centre. Sponsored and supported by local businesses and individuals, the volunteer led venture, headed up by Holt Community Café enjoyed a traditional 2 course turkey meal, Christmas Carols, games, quiz and even watched the live broadcast by the Queen as part of the celebrations. The day, which is provided free of charge, was enjoyed by a wide range of people from Holt and the surrounding district, with a wonderful community atmosphere and great spirit and energy from the large number of volunteers who came to serve and enjoy the day. There are many reasons for people to choose to spend a Community Christmas Day, and the event is run by the Café to provide an alternative day for those who find the festivities difficult, lonely, or who just wish for a different experience of what Christmas can mean. The café received generous donations both in the run up to the event, and on the day itself, all of which goes towards continuing the vital support and service that it provides on a weekly basis to the residents of Holt and District. The Holt Community Café is now coming up to its 5th anniversary and has seen a rise in the number of volunteers and attendees at the Thursday lunchtime café, held at The Venue in Holt. The Committee would like to express its grateful thanks and appreciation to Allards butchers of Holt for providing beautiful turkeys, Tesco, Holt Fish Bar, Bookers, Thoughtful Expressions, TSB Holt, Brit Cricket, North Norfolk Vintage Car Club and all the other individuals who donated money or goods towards the day. Also huge thanks to all the volunteers who came to serve and worked so hard both on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to make it a very special event. It is thanks to the generosity of all involved that the day was such a success, and our Community Christmas Day Lunch stands as a testament to the massive heart that Holt has. Carolyn Burn.

Sheringham lost a true gentleman with the passing of Brian Hannah on 29 December. Brian, aged 74, represented Sheringham on North Norfolk District Council for 22 years, and throughout that time was a champion of community safety issues on the Council. He was heavily involved in the successful road safety campaign for the three-way junction on the A148 Cromer to Holt road. He was forced to step down from councillor duties in late 2019 due to poor health.

Thank You

Dear Jo, May I take this opportunity, please, through your ‘Readers Write’ section to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the kind and thoughtful person who not only found my walking stick, in Salthouse Heath carpark but also put it safely to one side, for me to find later the following day. I had leant it against the car, whilst I took off my boots, then driven home without realising that I had not picked it up to put in the boot of the car. I was delighted to be reunited with it, as my husband made this thumb stick for me, several years ago. With many thanks again. Kate

Holt Litter Collection

Dear Jo I recently moved to Holt and love the beautiful countryside and coast that we have here in North Norfolk. I enjoy cycling on the quiet country lanes yet have been concerned by the amount of litter that has obviously been thrown out of car windows. So much so that I have taken to doing a few litter picks along some of the lanes. The photo shows how much litter was collected by 2 people on New Year’s Day in just ten minutes at Salthouse Heath. Another bag full was collected along Kelling Road the day after. Most of the litter is bottles or cans, all of which can be recycled simply by taking it home and all litter can be taken home in the car. How about making it a New Year’s Resolution? Yours sincerely Mary Moverley

Aid Africa – the amazing work goes on.

Water supplies: We worked an intensive programme of water supply improvements, funded by Wilmslow Wells for Africa and in conjunction with the local WUA (Chiringa Water Users’ Association), who estimated 25,000 people would benefit. It consisted of 4 projects—building a water tower to carry 2 x 5000ltr tanks, upgrading the Mtikhe line, constructing a new line to the Health Centre, and repairing 2 borehole pumps. The borehole pumps were tackled first. The repair at Bilison restored safe water back to 460 households, plus hundreds of passers-by as it’s close to the main road. The pump at the Health Centre is another important resource, as it’s the only one within walking distance, so poor performance affects not only local homes, but the hundreds visiting the Health Centre each week. Now it’s been repaired, it will back up any seasonal shortage of piped water supply during the dry season, giving maximum coverage to this vulnerable community. Goats: Our goats are doing fine, but we’re always eager to improve and learn better care. During this trip we trialled a new feeding regime, more targeted to individual goats, which reduced the stress at feeding times and increased milk yield. However, bringing in enough green stuff for our goats (20 does, 2 stud bucks and 4 male kids), is a tough job this time of year. During the long dry season, there’s not much fodder around, except at the distant mountain, way beyond where everyone else goes. Our vehicles can’t access this terrain, so it’s a case of hand-cutting & carrying the material back to site on heads. One way we’ve helped both our goats and the vulnerable, we’ve developed a “cash-for-work”, scheme giving the able-bodied poor a way to earn money in exchange for collecting goat food. Goats’ milk: Since the government introduced the breastfeeding-only policy last year, we have not been allowed to help vulnerable babies under 6 months. However, a new direction has opened up - milk for pre-schoolers. Twice a week, a staff member visits a couple of Nursery Schools by motorbike, carrying a cool bag containing milk from our goats. At each school, the organisation was impressive, it was obviously a regular and valued initiative, with about 150 kids receiving milk each time. Teachers report that the children’s health has greatly improved and the numbers attending school has risen due to the provision of free milk.

Food programme: Monthly distribution of our Food Programme begins just before Christmas so the particularly vulnerable can celebrate this special time too. Needs are assessed, lists of those most at risk prepared, and soap and soya meals bought in order to give away with the tons of maize in our storerooms. 170 households (about 750 people) will receive this help, aimed to bridge the gap between the maize destroyed in the fields during the cyclones and the next harvest in March/April 2020. Education sponsorship: We provided Term 1 fees for the students on our Education Programme in 3 local secondary schools, along with boarding, uniforms and exam fees. 19 of last year’s 34 Form 4 students passed their MSCE’s (similar to our GCSE’s) a very good result for rural schools, at a higher percentage than the national average! LANGHAM DOME NEWS

On 11 November, Armistice Day, Ian Harris, the nephew of Flight Sergeant Frederick Harris, who died at RAF Langham in Wellington F for Freddie, which suffered an engine failure and crashed on take-off for operations in March 1945, killing four of the seven crew, returned to the Dome to lay a wreath at the memorial plaque in memory of his uncle and all who lost their lives in the crash. Flight Sergeant Harris The wreath is laid in the was the aircraft’s co-pilot, and the short presence some of the FoLD ceremony also honoured all who died on Trustees operations from RAF Langham. In the last issue we told the story of a wartime Beaufighter operation from Langham as narrated by a now 101 years old Navigator/Wireless Operator, Arthur Steel. Although not directly related to those operations from Langham his story of what should have been a fatal crash just weeks later makes his survival to 101 even more remarkable. This is it - an amazing tale again told in his own words. On 20th July 1944 the North Coates Beaufighter Wing was briefed to attack shipping off the coast of Norway. Flight Lieutenant Tony Adams, my pilot, with me as his navigator, in torpedo aircraft U of 254 Sqn, were well on the way, when our port engine started giving trouble. We informed the Wing Leader, and set course back to base, getting as far as 40 miles off Flamborough Head, by which time the engine was vibrating so badly it was increasingly difficult to do anything. For a few more miles we struggled on, until the engine finally tore itself out of its mounting, causing the aircraft to flip over, and dive vertically into the sea. I noted the air speed indicator showed 280 knots - about 320 miles per hour - as we fell, and I knew we should both be dead within a few seconds, as no-one ever survived such incidents. I regained consciousness deep under water, trapped by cables and torn metal, struggling to hold my breath, and furious that I was drowning instead of being instantly killed on impact. Ultimately I could hold my breath no longer, and clearly recall taking three deep breaths of seawater. By a miracle I broke clear and surfaced coughing and spluttering. After a time I was conscious of my surroundings, watched the tail of the aircraft disappear under the sea, and our dinghy, which had released15:20 from the wing, Granite_Layout 1 08/01/2020 Page 1 set off for the horizon in a brisk wind. I managed to stay afloat partly by my Mae West jacket, but mainly from using the fuel tanks that had floated from inside the wings when the aircraft disintegrated. Tony was nowhere to be seen, although I kept calling but with little hope he

W O N E L A S

! ON

could still be alive. My right leg was swinging about, from the knee joint, and I wasn't in great shape, but I had to stay conscious if I had any hope of surviving. Many miles out to sea, injured, no dinghy and with only a fuel tank under each arm, things weren't too optimistic. After sometime I became aware a vessel was heading my way, and begun to blow my whistle as issued to all aircrew, and which I was told was heard nearly a mile away. All I had to do was keep afloat, which I just about managed until this wonderful trawler got close - and went past as it still had too much way. I managed to hang on, it came round again, a man dived over and tied a rope around me, and I was pulled in. There was a nasty moment as I got nearer to the propeller, which was still turning, but I was hauled aboard and promptly lost consciousness. While I was out, the skipper, Ern Rogers, got someone to kneel on my thigh while he pulled the dislocated knee back into place. He told me, later, that he would never have attempted it if he had known the leg was also broken but he certainly saved my whole leg - and my life. They searched for Tony but there was no trace, so they started back to Grimsby. I was transferred to an Air Sea Rescue launch and taken to Immingham, then to Grimsby hospital and, some days later, to various RAF hospitals, where I spent seven months before returning to North Coates. “Skipper Ernest Rogers of the trawler “Median” had ventured his vessel into a minefield, after seeing an aircraft crash into the sea, and Mr James Daykin dived overboard to bring a line to the badly injured airman. In January 1945 Skipper Rogers received the MBE (civil division) for his part in the rescue, and Mr Daykin was commended for brave conduct, also being awarded the vellum of the Royal Humane society for his gallantry." The Dome will re-open on Thursday 2nd April in 2020, at the start of the main Norfolk Schools’ holidays. In the meantime please see the separate article on the planned Dome winter talks. As always if you would like more information on the Dome and how to become a Friend of Langham Dome (where annual membership gives unlimited free admission) or to join us as a volunteer please contact our Dome Manager Joanna Holden on e-mail jo@langhamdome.org. Dear Friends,

HAPPY NEW YEAR! The beginning of any new year should be filled with optimism at the potential of new opportunities and the hope of a better and brighter future. Yet I guess if we are honest many of us enter this year with the same fears and anxieties that plagued us in the last. The result of December’s election will have filled some with renewed hope and others with dread. The United States of America’s recent actions in the middle east has increased tension between East and West and made uncertain troubled times even more uncertain and troubled. Political opinion continues to polarize countries, threatening to divide people and nations even further. The bush fires raging in Australia highlight the challenges of a climate that is changing fast. Personally, we may fear changes in our own lives that are beyond our control. We may fear failure and regret and even our own mortality. Yet one thing I take away from the celebration of Christmas is that as Christians we are made for something more. The angels call to Mary, Joseph and the Shepherds, “do not be afraid” ought to be still ringing in our ears as we enter into this New Year. The birth of the Christ-child remains God’s gift of love and is a light to the world and lays before us a number of choices. As we journey into the year ahead of us, we are all faced with a choice to live in fear or to live in hope. A choice to cloak ourselves in darkness or slowly embrace the light. A choice to hate or to love. A choice to make war or to strive for peace. A choice to build up or to destroy. A choice to close the door of our heart to the needs of others or to be a friend to those in need. A choice to care for creation, to do what we can to tackle the consequences of a changing climate or to deny any personal responsibility to do what we can to safeguard the gift of creation for ourselves and for future generations. There remains great uncertainty in the year ahead, for us personally, for us as a country and for the world. Yet, we need not be afraid, for the Word has become flesh and dwelt among us. God has come down to earth to share in our humanity in order that we may share in his divine life of love. His glory has been revealed to the world, and if are open to the possibilities of the choices before us we can face the future with hope. May the year ahead be a truly happy and hopeful one! Fr. Howard

Missing a parent

By Maria Endall, family solicitor, Hayes + Storr When a child loses a parent, through death, divorce or separation, the impact is often significant and long-lasting. This is bad enough for a child whose loss is owing to the death of a parent, but what if one parent is preventing contact with the other post-separation? No matter how well intended a parent might consider this sort of intervention to be, it has been well researched that the consequences of such actions can have the opposite effect, and cause the child unnecessary suffering and long-term damage. Not involving yourself in your child’s life, or being prevented from seeing your child by the other parent, can cause feelings of rejection and grief for your child. To make matters worse, the child may feel unable to grieve properly if they have been drawn into conflict. Where one parent prevents the other from having a normal, positive relationship with a child, it is known in family law proceedings as ‘parental alienation’ or ‘intractable hostility’ and is considered extremely damaging to the child and is increasingly being recognised as

Joe Catterall

a form of child abuse. In certain cases where parental alienation is established, the courts will increasingly consider transferring residency of the child to the alienated parent in order to reunify the child with that important missing link in their life, and address the emotional trauma they have suffered up to that point. The courts aim is to ensure that both children and adults are kept safe, and to enable children to maintain relationships with both parents where it is safe and in the child’s best interests to do so. No matter how parents may feel about one another after a separation, the importance of keeping the child’s well-being as the main focus, cannot be understated. It should be remembered that it is the child’s right to have a positive relationship with both his or her parents, and it is both parents’ responsibility to ensure this happens. SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY

The last meeting of the Society’s 50th year took place on Monday December 9th. Members were invited to put up 5 sheets of philatelic material to be judged by all present that evening. The voting system, devised by Andrew McCandlish, gave each person 3 votes in order of their preference. This certainly made it easier to select one’s favourite 3 displays, instead of having to choose just one. The prize for the best display for a new entrant was awarded to Tim Turner. However, Tim’s entry of Bermuda Key Type high value, King George VI also merited the trophy for the overall best display of the evening! In 2nd place was Jim Farrell’s display of French stamps of 1946 to 1958, depicting historical figures and 19th century celebrities. Tony Taylor presented the story of the Battle of Waterloo, as portrayed in stamps from a variety of countries with connections with that famous event. The society’s chairman, Gerry Smith,

took the fourth prize with stamps from Papua New Guinea from 1965 to 1969. The evening ended with some excellent festive refreshments, provided by the members, and a time to socialize and reflect at the end of a very successful and enjoyable year. The first meeting of the New Year, on January 13th, will be a Members’ Sales evening. Contact Gerry on 01263 579529 if you would like to come along to that or any future meeting.

Holt WI

The Holt WI meeting in December was a celebration of its 83rd birthday; a real party with delicious cakes and singing. Playing for Cake are a group of community musicians that work on a not-for-profit basis to provide interactive music sessions to promote health and wellbeing and they entertained with songs in which we all could join such as 5ft 2 eyes of blue and You are my sunshine. There was a lot of scarf waving with the song Let’s Go Fly a kite and of course, happy birthday was sung

with gusto. This was also a time to say thank you and goodbye to our retiring president and treasurer and hello and welcome to our new, as well as welcoming new members to the committee. The following day, several members enjoyed a visit to the Little Theatre, Sheringham to see the panto Dick Whittington and his cat. This was a hilarious production and we had such a fun time, putting us in a cheery mood for Christmas... At the next meeting on January 15th we will voting on the following resolutions which are: A call to increase potential stem cell donor registration; Female crash test dummies; End Modern Slavery; Time to talk about death and dying and 4XDOL¿HG )RRW +HDOWK 3URIHVVLRQDO Protect our precious helium. New members are always welcome at the Holt WI which has its meetings (MCFHP, MAFHP) on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 2pm until 4pm at the Holt Community Centre. The Annual Lunch, sponsored by the Bodham & Beckham Horticultural Show and Quiz, took place in the Village Hall on Saturday 14th December and was attended by 54 diners, who were welcomed by guitarist Chris Johnson playing and singing Christmas music. At 12.45 an excellent lunch was prepared and supplied by Pat and her team from 'Back to Your Place' of Edgefield, thank you from us all! Whilst the tea, coffee and mince pies were served the entertainment continued with Fred 'The Local Correspondent' from Bodham, telling many hilarious jokes and stories he had gathered on his journeys! Next it was the turn of the diners to exercise their voices with Christmas Carols led by Mary Cubitt accompanied by Ronnie Jones on Piano. I would like to thank Fred, Chris and Ronnie, along with Mary for providing the entertainment. Thank you to all who provided wonderful raffle prizes. Last but not least my team who helped prepare and set up during the morning, kept the wine and juice flowing throughout the afternoon and finally cleared up after the event, thank you! I wish you all a Very Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you in December 2020. Jackie Bedell.

Call out for artists to take part in popular sculpture event at stunning new location

One of the region’s flagship sculpture events is set to move to a new location this year – and applications are now open for artists to apply to take part. Waveney & Blyth Arts’ seventh outdoor sculpture event Sculpture in the Valley 2020 – will help the organisation celebrate ten years at the forefront of the regional arts scene. Sculpture in the Valley 2020 will be curated by the Suffolk based artist and curator David Baldry and will be hosted by Potton Hall, Westleton located close to Dunwich Forest in the Blyth valley area of Suffolk. Annually attracting thousands of visitors to the region, the event moves location every three years around the Waveney and Blyth valleys to reach new audiences and explore different landscapes. Previously, the sculpture event has taken place at the Raveningham Centre and the River Waveney Study Centre in Earsham. Genevieve Rudd, the new Chair of Waveney & Blyth Arts (WBA), said: “2020 marks WBA’s tenth birthday, so we wanted to develop this year’s sculpture event to celebrate our legacy of connecting art with landscape and place over the past decade. “Potton Hall is situated along the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, within the Blyth river valley area of our patch. The new site for 2020 offers an opportunity for artists to explore a distinct environment – from the domestic planted gardens to the wildflower meadow set against the rugged Dunwich woodland. “We have devised the theme ‘Reflections on Landscape’ which asks artists to consider ideas about scale, perspectives and the interaction between wild and cultivated aspects of the landscape. “It’s important to note that we are living in the context of climate crisis and this, along with broader perspectives on the landscapes we live in and our relationships with it, could be compelling ideas for artists to explore. “We’re delighted to be working with John and Priscilla Westgarth who live at Potton Hall and we are very excited to welcome our new curator David Baldry, an award-winning, Suffolk-based artist with an international reputation.” Taste ofDavid India Baldry Holt_Layout 1 10/01/2020 Page 1 an exhibition at the has recently returned14:15 from curating Palazzo Pesaro Papafava in Venice as part of the city’s Biennale. David Baldry said: “When invited to curate Sculpture in the Valley 2020, I was immediately struck by the title ‘Reflections on Landscape’. This year

we are blessed with a new and extraordinary site close to the East Suffolk coast with its woodland, heath, marsh and of course sky. “Art is at its best when pointing to something we don’t always acknowledge or take for granted. This year artists will have every opportunity to think about, engage with and make Genevieve Rudd, David Baldry and culpture in a very special Simon Raven at Potton hall Sculpture in location which embraces both the Valley 2020 garden and the wild. I hope we can use this to showcase all aspects of contemporary sculpture. The big, the small, the beautiful, the forever, the experimental and the ephemeral. Above all I hope that this exhibition will excite, delight and challenge its audience.” Each year Waveney & Blyth Arts hosts a programme of events that highlights the unique character of the Waveney and Blyth valleys situated in north Suffolk and south Norfolk. Artist have until Friday 7th February to apply to take part in Sculpture in the Valley 2020. Sculpture in the Valley 2020 will offer artists an improved package of benefits including help with travel costs, reduced commission fee, and split of the box office if the attendance target is achieved. Each artist taking part will also be eligible for the Curator’s Choice prize of £250 or the Visitor’s Choice prize of £250 for 1st prize, £200 for 2nd prize or £100 for 3rd prize. If you're working on an application and would like to explore the site before you submit it there will be a pre-application site visit on Saturday 25th January 10:30am to 12:30pm. Sculpture in the Valley 2020 will take place between Saturday 18th July and Sunday 2nd August, 10am to 5pm daily. For full details on how to apply please visit www.waveneyandblytharts.com

Budgens of Holt staff raise record amount for Macmillan Cancer Support, North Norfolk

A year of fundraising by staff at CT Baker Budgens of Holt resulted in a donation of £19,885 to volunteers from Macmillan Cancer Support Group, north Norfolk. During 2019 staff baked, walked and hosted lots of different events throughout the year to raise a record amount for the charity which was selected in memory of a valued colleague who tragically passed away. Jane Gurney-Read, acting Managing Director of the CT Baker Group, together with representatives from the team, presented the cheque, and said: “ I am very proud of the team who have given their time, effort and skill to raise this tremendous amount for Macmillan Cancer Support in north Norfolk, and I am grateful to our customers who have supported the in store fundraising activities.” Jo Haywood from Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk said: “This is a fabulous total after a year of fundraising at CT Baker Budgens of Holt. A huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard raising this money and to all who generously donated and sponsored events. All the money raised is ring-fenced to provide Macmillan services in North Norfolk to support those living with cancer.”

Home Cold Composting Hello everyone, in this issue I would like to focus on composting at home or on the allotment. I have been gardening for many years and am a Master Composter with Norfolk County Council and Garden Organic. At this time of the year, the compost heap slows down and just ticks over, as it normally relies on warmth as well as rain to keep it working with all the living organisms working away inside. Whether you have a plastic compost bin or wooden framed composter or indeed any other type, the principles are the same. The bin should be sited directly on the ground, in a sunny position and if possible be able to take moisture from the rain, with some plastic bins, drill a few holes at the top to allow more air and water in. Many people ask me why their compost heap is a green sludge or why the material is not breaking down. The answer is always the same, there is a need for a 50/50 balance between brown materials and green materials. Layering the material is important and then mixing it in. If you have an abundance of grass cuttings then it is important to put paper, cardboard or dry material in between or it will rot down into a black liquid. Tear up the material and it will breakdown quicker. Magazines now all have vegetable ink so no worries here with contamination. When it comes to prunings, I use the principle of nothing thicker than my finger should go in. You can put leaves in, but you need to realise that they will take about 18 months to rot down and to give good leaf mould. If you have a lot of leaves use a different bin or put them in plastic bags and pierce the bags with a fork to let the wet in. They will then break down. So, what can I put in the bin? Greens: Vegetable peelings, flowers, fruit, stalks, bracken, coffee grounds, comfrey leaves, prunings, grass mowings, nettles and annual weeds but not their seed heads. Browns: Paper, cardboard, junk mail, egg boxes & shells, hair, straw, tea leaves, wool or natural fibre jumpers and wood ash. (Not coal fire ash). Christmas trees which are shredded and wrapping paper that is not plastic, foil or covered with glitter is ok. I would also advise to avoid cooked food as this might attract rats, to avoid rats coming in, you can put fine wire netting underneath the plastic bins, this will put them off as they are mainly looking for warmth and cover. To speed up your compost, you can turn it over from one heap into another every few months. I tend to take the lazy way and it turns into black gold in about 9 months. This can be used as a mulch on the flower bed or dug into the vegetable patch.

Snow Drop Sundays & Art Exhibitions at Thorpe Market Church in February

2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd February 2020 / 12 – 4pm. So far, the winter has been wet and windy, and the trees are skeletal and stark. However, below the ground the miracle of renewal is afoot. Come February, the nodding heads of Thorpe Market’s snowdrops will be peeking above ground to see who is around. Why not come and welcome their return on Sundays throughout February. Not only can you enjoy the glorious display of the galanthus in the churchyard but be welcomed inside our warm church by a feast, both visual and cake-based! Once again, we will be hosting a series of art exhibitions. Woodgate Nursery and Foundry will be selling a selection of beautiful spring plants and hand-crafted metalwork. We will also be selling honey produced by bees from our Hazel Grove by local beekeepers Ken & Theresa Caves. Woodland crafts from Wrong’s Covert Woodland Restoration, unique glass gardens and terrariums by Moongazer Glass Gardens and willow work by SilverWood Studio will also be for sale. The funds raised help to keep the church and churchyard in good order, available for community use and, most importantly, open as a place of worship for the people of the village and further afield. Last year the snowdrops attracted over 1200 visitors over four Sundays. Our many volunteers come from outlying villages: Trunch, Southrepps, Northrepps and Mundsley as well as Thorpe Market. Without them none of our fund-raising efforts would be possible at the church, especially the homemade cakes that have been so much in demand that we produced our own collection of recipes for sale. St Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market, Norfolk, NR11 8UA Exhibiting artists for each Sunday will be as follows: Feb 2nd: Three Local Artists: Rosemary Fereday, Antonia Martinez & Tony Lee Feb 9th: Nine Photographers Feb 16th: Rebecca Hitchens and 6by4 Secret Postcard Fundraiser Feb 23rd: IMPRESSED Norfolk Printmakers For further information please contact the Churchwarden, Martin Castle,

WEYBOURNE GOOD COMPANIONS

On Wednesday, 18th December, 16 members of Weybourne Good Companions Group met at The Ship Inn and enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch. Everyone present was issued with a free raffle ticket and several lucky people went home with prizes. Sandy Bailey thanked everyone for attending. The Good Companions Club is usually held at Weybourne Village Hall on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 2.30 pm. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 22nd January when there will be a light-hearted general knowledge quiz. Entry is £2.50, which includes refreshments. All welcome!

Tales Around the Inglenook

Another fun event, in connection with Wells-next-the-Sea Twinning Association, will take place at the WI Hall, Wells, on Friday 31st January at 7.30 pm. This will be the ever-popular Tales Around the Inglenook at which people are invited to read a short tale or extract to an attentive audience in an intimate atmosphere before a cosy, open fire. This year the subject is “Humour.” Why not bring along a few lines to share and make others smile? If you don’t feel like reading, then come and listen in good company whilst chasing away any winter blues. Refreshments will consist of a range of finger food as well as mulled apple juice or cider. It promises to be a fun evening. Tickets are £6.00. Bookings and further details can be obtained from Jean on 01328 – 711476. Barry Howes.

A LOST WORLD by Leslie Kinsley

my name’. He then tore up this letter and threw it on the floor without opening it. I was shocked. I expected him to get the sack for his rudeness, but nothing happened. I could not understand this, and it puzzles me to this day. We all looked forward to the end of the harvest. In particular we looked forward to a drink with the farmer at the end of the last day. The day came, and there was about an hours’ worth of combining left to do. All three combines were out and the farmer was driving one of them. I was on one of the other combines, but at that time of year I did an extra job for the farmer. I was raising his pheasants, ready for shooting season. Every day, before and after work, I would go off and feed the pheasants, to keep them on the farmer’s land. I decided to go off to do this, leaving the other combines to finish. I came back later, looking forward to that hard earned drink! Unknown to me, the irritable worker, who did not like me, had noticed my absence and taken offence. He was driving the tractor and trailer which collected the corn from the combines. He stomped off home and the harvest was not completed. The farmer blamed it all on my absence. ‘What if it had rained?’ he raged. I replied ‘There was barely an hour to do for the two combines, and there is no sign of rain’ The farmer was so busy getting on to me, he never offered any of us that drink. What a disappointment! I have always felt it was odd that the bad tempered worker could get away with anything. It never seemed fair to me.

– A harvest disappointment My word how time flies! You finish one job and there comes another! Yes, it’s time to get the combines ready for harvest. I won’t mention names, just ‘farmer’ and ‘worker’. We had three combines stored in the barn. The farmer always insisted on getting them in and out as they were a tight fit. We could have done it easily, but it saved us the bother. We shouted ‘Whoa’ and smiled to ourselves as he shunted them backwards and forwards. These combines were very old, and nothing like the ones you see today. Once started, they made a terrible noise like rocks rattling in a tin drum. It would take us a whole morning to get them working properly. You would know when they were ready by the smell. They smelt of hot crisps or frying potatoes. Off we would go, hoping for the best and not another breakdown! Once harvest started we worked very long hours, sometimes a fifteen hour day. Traditionally, a farmer would provide a bit of refreshment to keep us in the field. Our treat was a cup of tea and a bun, which the farmer’s wife brought each day at about four o’clock. We really looked forward to that as we got very hot and dry. One day, she was a bit late with this treat. I was just grateful it had arrived, but one of the other workers had a really short temper and was always looking to take offence. He was very rude to the poor woman and really upset her. Her husband was angry and I saw him go up to the irritable worker next morning and hand him an envelope. He took it from the Farmer, looked at the envelope and said ‘That’s not

A Twenty Year Dream Comes True!!

Even prior to joining the management team at Byford's in 2001, Paul Rogers dreamed of owning his own Cafe/Bistro in his hometown of Holt. This dream has now come true! He has now taken over what was Nina's Wine Bar in Lee's Yard. The building has been renamed and refurnished and on Thursday 30th January, Paul will be opening the doors and welcoming all to The Snug Cafe/Bistro. "We will be open from 8.30am Monday to Saturdays for coffee and breakfast, as well as offering cakes, pastries and scones made on-site daily. Watch out for the special lemon or butterscotch Yum Yums! We will also offer a lunch menu catering for all dietary requirements," says Paul. "On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings The Snug will be open for drinks and dinner. The menu will consist of the best seasonal ingredients from our local suppliers, with an eclectic blend of traditional dishes as well as flavours from the Mediterranean and the Middle East." The Snug in Lee's Yard is 'Holts Hidden Gem'. From the outside no one realises it has a beautiful upstairs space which can be used for both intimate meals for two, or made available for larger groups of friends with something to celebrate. The Snug has been named to coincide with the atmosphere Paul and his wife Beth would like to achieve. 'We are both big believers in the Danish lifestyle of Hygge" says Beth. "Translated, this means a quality of cosiness that gives a feeling of contentment and well-being, this is what we would love our customers to experience."

Hempstead Toads Continue to Need You!

Many toads live in gardens where they eat slugs and other pests and so are very beneficial to gardeners. At migration time, they always return to their birth-pond to spawn and often a road near the pond will run across their path. They move soon after dusk when road traffic can be at its worst and visibility poor. At these times, many thousands of toads across Norfolk become traffic casualties. Within the boundaries of Hempstead there are two such ponds, Rookery Pit in Hempstead and Selbrigg Pond in Selbrigg. For some years now, a small band of volunteers has worked at both locations during the migration season (mid February to the beginning of April), moving toads each evening to safety. In 2019, nearly 3,000 toads and frogs were saved at

Rookery Pit and just over 6,000 at Selbrigg. Numbers vary from year to year and this was about average, so the effort really does pay off! We are always in need of more volunteers and wonder if there are some kind souls in Holt or other nearby villages who would like to help the toads. More volunteers would make the work load at both sites even more manageable and easier for all. We are holding an informal meeting in Holt on Tuesday 4th February at 8 o’clock in the Conservatory at the Feathers Hotel in Holt. If you feel able to assist in our rescue mission this year, please come along to the meeting. Contacts are Su on 01263 710702, John on 01263 713835 or John from Toadwatch 01603 812472,. One for the Veggies!

Serving our customers in North Norfolk and beyond since 1999

Whether you have started the year doing Veganuary, or are just trying to have the odd meat free day, this recipe is one you definitely need to have in your repertoire. Even the determined meat eaters want a slice of this loaf once they smell it, as the flavour is so rich and full, and the textures are just gorgeous. This has been a few years in the making, having gone through various changes and adaptations, and is what we served on Christmas Day this year; needless to say, there was none left! Cranberries and roast chestnuts can be purchased in most supermarkets, and although this isn’t the cheapest nut loaf recipe, it is so worth the extra pennies! Miso paste can be bought from all good health food stores, and keeps a long time in the fridge. You can add it to home made soups, as it adds a fabulous umami flavour, and having live cultures in it, is very good for your gut, so an all-round great purchase. Even if you’ve never been tempted by vegetarian food before, give this a go – I promise you will be converted!

Ultimate Vegetarian Roast Loaf

1 large red onion, diced 1 large carrot, peeled and cut into very small chunks Olive oil 2 fat cloves garlic, diced small 150g red lentils, rinsed well under cold water 900ml hot veg stock (I use Marigold Bouillon powder) Good tsp dried sage 1 pack roasted chestnuts, chopped up 100g dried cranberries Tsp Miso paste, mixed with a little hot water 100g oatmeal

Run a little olive oil around a 2lb loaf tin to prevent sticking, and preheat your oven to 180°. Place onion, carrot and garlic in a couple tblsp olive oil in a deep frying pan or wok, and cook gently until getting soft giving the occasional stir, around 10 mins. Add in the lentils and stir well to coat in the oil, and then add in your stock and bring to boil. Simmer for 10 mins, and then add in sage, chestnuts, cranberries and stir in the miso. Continue simmering for a further 10 to 15 mins until most of the water is absorbed and the lentils are soft. Take off the heat and stir in the oats, combining well. Pour mixture into the loaf tin and firm down a little with the back of a large spoon and bake in the oven for 35 – 40 mins, until slightly brown on the top. Run a spatula around the edges to loosen. Leave in tin to cool slightly, and turn out smartly onto a chopping board, knocking the bottom to loosen the loaf. Leave to stand for a further 15 mins to enable easy cutting (I cover with foil and a clean tea towel.) Can be portioned once cold (put in fridge to properly chill before cutting) and frozen in portions for easy roast dinners. Reheat in the foil at the bottom of the oven. Carolyn Burn

The Holt ‘1960s’ Club

The Holt ‘1960s’ Club held their Christmas lunch on the 9th, and Christmas tea on the 16th of December. Nearly forty people attended both events. Entertainment was provided by Mick Leary from Briston, and ‘the Squeezes’ from North Walsham. The lunch and tea was catered for by Rosie Beales and her staff. A giant raffle was held at the tea, and many thanks for all the Holt traders and club members for their generosity in giving prizes. New members are always welcome, just call in. The club meets every Monday between 2pm-4pm at the community centre. Stan Munn (Sec). (01263 712602). www.holtchronicle.co.uk

Holt and District Probus Club

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

The Feathers in Holt hosted the first meeting in 2020 of Holt and District Probus Club on 2nd January. The club chairman, John Mangan, presented an illustrated talk about the Vulcan bomber aircraft which was developed soon after the Second World War primarily to carry and deliver nuclear weapons. John showed pictures of the various prototypes produced during development and of the aircraft as ultimately produced. Although (fortunately) the Vulcans were never called upon to deliver an atomic (or hydrogen) bomb, they did drop more traditional bombs on the runway at Port Stanley during the Falklands war. The idea was to make the runway unusable by the Argentinians and two Vulcans flew that immense distance with air refuelling assistance and one of them successfully completed this major mission. Vulcans were also used as a ‘test-bed’ for the development of engines for other aircraft such as the TSR2 and Concorde. There are no Vulcans flying now, but there are several as static exhibits, including one at the City of Norwich Aviation Museum, where it is possible to enter the flight deck. Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782. Refer also to https:// holtprobusclub.wordpress.com

Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard

and Saxons to the indigenous population including, perhaps, some of the Iceni Tribe who had survived the suppression of Boudicca's revolt. Where they were condensed in Western Britain their land was called "Wales" with the same meaning i.e "foreign". The west Britons, there, adopted the word "Cymry" meaning "fellow-countrymen" and called the Angles and Saxons "carn Sais" (Bad Saxons) or "Saesneg" (note the similarity with Scottish "Sassenach" also meaning "Saxon"). But did the Britons who remained here in the east and who originally spoke the same language (Brittonic Celtic) disparage the Welsh with some kind of pretended animus because they now had new masters, the Angles? Were they obliged to disparage and denigrate their fellow Britons of the west in order to co-exist with the Angles who were to name this part of east Britain Norfolk and impose their own language? It would be rather marvellous if DNA could establish whether the dark-haired people of west Breckland could be compared with the dark Welsh to see if they are ethnically the same. However, DNA only differentiates from about 1100 AD, anything prior to that is just lumped together as "English” and that might involve several other ethnic elements.

A Relic of Racial History?

Fifty years ago, when I was working on one of Her Majesty's shore establishments on the South Downs, I met a man who instantly recognized my Norfolk accent. I introduced myself as from Norwich and he said he came from a village in the very west of Breckland. This happened to be the birthplace of my mother, her father and grandfather. He then went on to say something which I have never forgotten: "Have you noticed how they hate the Welsh?" Regrettably I had to acknowledge that my grandfather and at least one of his brothers did seem to harbour some kind of prejudice against the Welsh and this seemed to be irrational in view of their limited experience of peoples outside of their native Norfolk. Over the course of the years I tactfully raised this with Norfolk people in different parts of the county but there was never any kind of resonance of this animus. Then, reading W.A. Dutt's Norfolk: Cambridge County Geographies 1909* I came across the following: "At the present time many of the inhabitants of south-west Norfolk contrast strikingly with It would be the cruelest of ironies if, in the dark Ages, the indigenous the rest of the people of the county, they have very dark hair and eyes population had to deny their own identity in order to co-exist with the and photographs of them of them have been mistaken for Welsh big blond and red-haired folk from beyond the German Ocean. Having people....These dark-haired, dark eyed people are probably suffered the yoke of Rome for four centuries it is ineffably sad that they descendants of the Iberians who inhabited Norfolk in the prehistoric should have to say "I am no Wealas period when the inhabitants of our land (foreign) man" when in fact they had lived had no knowledge of the use of in eastern Britain since Neolithic times. metals." My grandfather and his kinfolk were the epitome of Dutt's dark folk. *Cambridge University Press, 1909, Ch 14 Not so long afterward I saw the dark p. 64.
