A mini film festival, at ‘The Venue’ Holt Community & Arts Centre, over the weekend of the 21st, 22nd and 23rd February 2020 featuring/ celebrating films connected with Norfolk/East Anglia, increasing the sense of Holt as a festival destination for the arts. County Councillor News

I think this is sufficiently important to repeat the following: Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service is offering free home fire risk checks to vulnerable residents, which includes fitting smoke alarms and helping people to plan an escape route from their home in the event of a fire. Visit the Norfolk County Council website and share this information with any of your family or friends who would benefit from this service.

from County Councillor Dr Marie Strong Wells Division

Norwich Bus Station:

marie.strong@norfolk.gov.uk; 07920 286 597

Update regarding the Independent Local Government Commission for England Review of Norfolk County Council Divisions:

North Norfolk District Council has agreed its Cabinet proposal for submission. It can be found on pages 133-148 of the following document: https://modgov.north-norfolk.gov.uk /documents/g369/Public%20reports%20pack% 2017th-Dec-2019%2018.00%20Council.pdf?T=10

Norfolk County Council proposal will be on its website no later than the week proceeding full council which will meet on Monday 3rd February. Other submissions are expected but as of today no dates to share – watch the press. The deadline for submission to LGBC remains at 11 February 2020. If you miss this date note below the opportunity to participate when the draft proposals are out. As explained previously the LGBC is asking for your view on the electoral review of Norfolk County Council. The review will result in new divisional boundaries across the county. This is your opportunity to say where you think your divisional boundary should be – telling the commission where people in your area go to access local facilities, which areas you identify with as your local community. Look out for draft recommendations planned for May 2020 with a further consultation. Final recommendations are expected to be published in September 2020. The new electoral arrangements will come into effect at the local elections in 2021 and will last for years so have your say and/or check on the draft submissions in May. For more information and interactive maps visit: consultation.lgbce.org.uk and www.lgbce.org.uk. Write to: Review Officer (Norfolk), LGBCE, 1st Floor, Windsor House, 50 Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0TL Email: reviews@lgbce.org.uk. Twitter @LGBCE Consultation. Free Fire Safety Check for the vulnerable:

Good news for residents travelling via Norwich Bus Station who have made complaints as to the condition of its facilities. A revamp, delivered by a partnership between Norwich County Council, Norwich City Council and local authorities (TFN – transport for Norwich) will see toilets and waiting areas refurbished. Improvements are also to be made to external lighting and additional outdoor seating provided. Real-time bus service information will be available as TFN trial new voice-activated technology. The project will cost £995,000 from a share of a multi-million pound government pot. (There is no planned closure during the four-month work and temporary toilets will be available.)

Better Broadband for Morston:

A new fibre enabled cabinet has been installed in Morston. If you live in Morston and would like to investigate Superfast broadband packages please contact your current internet service provider or an alternative provider. (Moving from ordinary broadband to superfast does not happen automatically and nor is it compulsory. So you can stay or move as is best for you.) The following Ofcom site provides a list of accredited broadband service providers:

Dear Jo,

Local Football Tournament

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

Every football season the Committee of the Cromer Lifeboat organise a football tournament by inviting 8 local teams to take part. This competition is played at Cabbell Park, Cromer, on Monday evenings on a knockout basis. This is run solely for the purpose of raising funds for our local Lifeboat and each Club happily pays £20.00 each to enter. Many players also donate their match fees to help raise the funds. Last season well over £2,000 was raised by Derek Hinds and his Committee and we, at Holt United (with 7 other Clubs) are very pleased to help by entering a team into the Competition. We are not happy to learn that the Scrooge’s of North Norfolk District Council actually charge the Lifeboat Cup Committee £40.00 to play each match - apart from the final - at Cabbell Park thus depriving them of much needed funds. As this is a Charity what do other readers think about this act on meanness. Yours sincerely David Wright

Littering Cyclists

Dear Jo, I write in response to Mary Moverley’s correspondence, and her assumption that litter contaminating our country lanes has “obviously” been discarded by motorists!! I am afraid that more than a fair proportion of that litter is attributable to cyclists. As well as plastic bottles, I have seen cyclists throw confectionary wrappers and take away sandwich boxes onto the verges. Unfortunately for some unknown reason, some cyclists think that the Highway Code, and non littering simply doesn’t apply to them. Rather like ignoring the signs on the flower tubs outside Byford’s which clearly states – “Please do not lean cycles here as it damages the planets”. But they still do it – sheer ignorance. As the old Norfolk saying constantly reminds us – “You can’t put it where it wont go”. Sincerely, Malcolm Mellor

Kelling Probus Club held its January meeting at 'The Dales Hotel' Upper Sheringham on Thursday 16th January. After drinks and buzzing conversation 21 members and two guests sat down to the usual tasty lunch. Vice chair John Whittington welcomed our after-lunch speaker Roger Woodard from Oulton Broad to speak to us on the 157 Infantry Regiment and its hero leader Felix Sparks. A young married man with a young child he told the story of Felix's travel in 500 days with the 'Thunderbirds' an American infantry regiment who landed in Sicily in July 1943 and ended up in 1945 at the end of the war in Dachau. The invasion of Sicily was not easy as the allotted date turned out to be stormy and many live were lost before the regiment could reach the beach. The main opposition were two German divisions of crack troops, although there were also an Italian army present it soon surrendered and Felix and his colleagues fought their way up to the Northern coast of the island and subsequently landed in Southern Italy losing many men on the way. Felix was wounded in this time and recovered in Algiers before he flew back to his regiment to fight on through the length of Italy and Southern France eventually fighting their way up towards Munich. They were ordered to head for Dachau the big concentration camp where they released those remaining and were horrified by the carnage of the inmates. Roger told us Felix ended his army career as a Brigadier General and missed all his friends and colleagues who died in the conflict. Our speaker was thanked by Gary Mitchell for a very good talk. We meet on the third Thursday of each month for lunch and a speaker. Want to come along? ring John Whittington on 01263 820333.

From Holt Consulting Rooms Healthy Lifestyle: Live 10 years longer

A recent study suggests that a healthy lifestyle can give women an extra 10, and men an extra 7 years of life free from cancer, heart problems and type 2 diabetes. The study was published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ 2020; 368: 16669), and the healthy habits were: • not smoking • healthy balanced diet •30 minutes moderate activity daily • a healthy weight • very moderate alcohol consumption

Women who met at least 4 out of these 5 criteria lived more than 10 years longer than those who did not have these healthy habits, and for men it was more than 7 years longer. The dierence was thought to be due to women living longer on average. The lead author, Dr Frank Hu, said the study had “a positive message for the publicâ€?. A healthy lifestyle gives not only more years of life, but better quality of life. This study reinforces what most of us feel to be true, and what many of us aspire to, but often ďŹ nd it diďŹƒcult to keep to. We know what we should be doing, but keep falling back into unhealthy habits. Those positive New Year resolutions seldom last more than a few weeks. However, it is possible to gain more control, so that you ďŹ nd it much easier to do what you really want to do, without feeling that it's a constant struggle. A combination of CBT and hypnosis helps you to change your thoughts, feelings and behaviour so they are in harmony with your deepest wishes, and it feels natural and easy to live a healthy lifestyle. It enables you to transform yourself from the inside out, to fulďŹ ll your potential, and become the person you really want to be. Contact me for a chat or more information.

Million-euro training fund helps local lifesaver learn vital skills

A volunteer crew member at Sheringhjam RNLI lifeboat station has had a vital part of their crew training funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation. Matt Blake, 31, from Sheringham, recently travelled to the RNLI College in Poole, Dorset, to complete the charity’s Crew Emergency Procedures course. Matt was inspired to join up as a volunteer crew member firstly as a young trainee before he went off to university and after completing his degree and subsequently returning to Norfolk he rejoined the Sheringham Crew. The course sees volunteer crew being trained in a variety of crucial subjects such as how to deal with fires aboard lifeboats, how to ‘abandon ship’ in the event of an emergency (with a 4m jump into water), team Sally Collins_Layout 1 06/01/2020 Page 1 survival swimming, coping in 19:08 a life-raft in simulated darkness, how to right a capsized inshore lifeboat, and the importance of lifejackets. ‘Their support is very important to us and it’s fantastic how, so far, over 3,000 of our crew members have benefitted from Lloyd’s Register Foundation funding this part of their training. As only one in ten of our volunteer crew members comes from a professional maritime background, the Crew Emergency Procedures course is crucial in giving our volunteers the training they need and helping keep them as safe as possible while carrying out rescues. It gives volunteers the confidence to save lives even in the most challenging conditions.’

This donation is the latest in Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s relationship with the RNLI, which was recognised in 2010 when it received the Group Supporter Award from HRH Prince Michael of Kent in recognition of its valuable support of the charity.

Talking about the training, Matt who volunteers as a crewman said: ‘Having been born and bred in a coastal town and witnessing the fantastic work of the local RNLI in saving life at sea I always wanted to become a part of that voluntary service. I love the practical aspect of training where you also learn these amazing the transferables skills.’ Matts training took place in the Sea Survival Centre at the RNLI College, where he was joined by other RNLI volunteer crew members from around Ireland and the UK. The training was funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, a charitable foundation that helps to protect life and property by supporting engineering-related education, public engagement and the application of research. The Foundation has committed to funding the RNLI’s Crew Emergency Procedures course for a second 5-year period until December 2020. This additional funding of €1,208,400 brings their total support for RNLI crew training to just over €2,804,400* since 2008. More than 3,000 RNLI volunteer crew members have now received the training thanks to Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s funding. Alex Evans, Lifesaving Training Manager at the RNLI said, ‘We are so grateful to Lloyd’s Register Foundation for funding this vital part of our volunteer crews’ training.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY THE VIRGIN, KELLING

Ev ery one welc ome to join us

The Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month. St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. The Church contains many interesting features, including a 14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi. The Church draws a congregation partly from outside the Village from those who value traditional services using the words of the Book of Common Prayer.

SAINT ANDREW’S & ALL SAINTS NEWS The Parish of Holt with High Kelling

FROM THE RECTOR

Stephen Graham Tel. 01263 649985, E: revdstephengraham@gmail.com Parish Office Tel: 01263 713479 E: standrewsholt@btinternet.com website at www.holtchurch.org

Dear Friends, Fixing the date of Easter. In an increasingly secular society, the church’s year has less and less significance for many people. Though it remains quite remarkable that the date of the Easter holiday changes each year and is determined by a religious festival. Easter Day which celebrates the resurrection of Christ always falls on the Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Christ died on the cross around the time of the Jewish Passover which begins on the night after the spring equinox. This year that full moon occurs on the 8th April and so Easter Day falls on Sunday 12th April. The earliest Easter can be is the 2nd March while the latest it can be is April 25th. The church has long prepared for Easter by encouraging the faithful to keep the holy season of Lent. Beginning with Ash Wednesday on the 26th February, Lent is an invitation to examine the motivation of our hearts and through prayer, study, devotion, worship, penitence and abstinence to seek to grow in our love and knowledge of God and holiness of life. Whether religious or not the idea of taking time out during the year to reflect on life and examine the motivation of the heart is surely not a bad one. We can then make changes where needed, prioritise the important from the trivial, set new goals and aspirations for the year ahead in order that we might live life to the full. In the past few years there has been talk about fixing the date of Easter so that, like Christmas, it remains fixed each year. Of course, the State could fix the date of a Spring Bank Holiday, but I sincerely hope the date of Easter does not become fixed. To do so would be to cut the last ties of our JewishChristian heritage and further the march of secularism upon our society. I quite like the fact that in the 21st century the rhythm of the Church’s year still impinges on our nation’s diary and the date of our Easter holidays is determined by an event that happened over 2000 years and changed the world for ever. Every blessing, Fr. Howard

Against the Tide

collection are a selection of oil paintings by RSMA President, Ben Mowll which portray aspects of tidal influences discovered in Venice, Honfleur and closer to home by the River Thames in London. Two particularly intriguing paintings are oils on board entitled ‘Beached Root’ and ‘Sea Flora’ by Gareth Brown, RSMA. Each are bold contemporary representational works of impressive scale which have been perfectly placed as important show-stopping pieces. Local representation is evident in this exhibition with artworks by Brian Ryder ROI FIEA; Sally Temple AIEA; Bob Brandt FIEA; William Garfit RBA and Kenneth Grant. The title of this exhibition could not be better suited for East Sussex based watercolour artist Felicity Flutter SGFA. Finding inspiration in the sea and all its many moods and changes of weather, Felicity’s paintings reveal the variations she discovers when observing the surfaces of water from flat calm mirror like surfaces to wild foaming waves. Since opening in 1972 the gallery has continued to evolve with ambitious enhancement programmes where initiatives introduced by the Hill family have resulted in award winning recognition. However the recently completed subtle and stylish refurbishment of the gallery by Adrian Hill, where significant investment has taken place with both internal and external presentation, has transformed this contemporary exhibition space into a leading art facility which is continually attracting interest from professional artists throughout the UK. The original founding policy of ‘The Gallery’ remains firmly in place to present high profile exhibitions which are totally accessible and with free admission. For 2020 the opening hours for ‘The Gallery’ have been extended to be fully inclusive from Monday - Saturday, 9am - 5pm.

The first of several themed exhibitions planned to take place during 2020 at The Gallery, Lees Yard, Holt, ‘Against the Tide’ opens on 18th January and continues until 25th February. Showcasing seascapes and marine themed original works of art, the exhibition is represented by invited members of the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and other British artists. Holt WI

Holt WI held the first meeting of the new decade on January 15th. After the usual business Roger Jones, a Norfolk Wildlife Trust Ambassador gave a fascinating and informative talk on Orchids of Norfolk, with slides which showed their beauty and great variety. There are 25000 thousand different species of them in the world with 23 of those being found in Norfolk. The Common spotted orchid is one of the most common in Norfolk. Another is the Bee orchid, an attractive and hardy orchid which can grow up to 30cm and can take 5 to 8 years to flower. The flower is unique, with its pink petals and a brown centre which looks like the body of a bee. One such place to find them is Gissing Common which has the ideal conditions for them to flourish. However, it is declining, as are some other species; for example the Marsh orchids at Burnham Overy Staithe which were destroyed in 2013 when storms and high tides caused flooding Other varieties found include the Pyramid which can be found in Hethel 4XDOL¿HG )RRW +HDOWK 3URIHVVLRQDO churchyard, the Lesser Butterfly found in Beeston Common, and Creeping Ladies Tresses found in Holkham Wood; just some which can be found here (MCFHP, MAFHP) in our beautiful North Norfolk. Several of our members have already seen them; so, when taking a stroll it’s a nice idea to look for them and if found, 9LVLWLQJ 3UDFWLFH take a photo. Telephone: (01362) 680176 After the talk, and the vote of thanks, there was tea and biscuits and voting Mobile 07886 692285 for resolutions and events for the year were suggested. Members will Registered Member of The British Association of Foot Health Professionals decide which ones are appealing. The speaker judged the Christmas card competition and chose a lovely handcrafted one. The next meeting is on February 19th when the speaker will be Jason Raper on the History of the Norwich Theatre Royal and the competition is Postcards of old Norwich. New members are always welcome to these meetings which are on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 2 pm until 4 pm at the Holt Community Centre; a place to make friends and enjoy talks and outings. On Wednesday, 8th January, 30 members of Weybourne WI gathered at the Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham, for our first meeting of the new year. We all enjoyed a delicious lunch in the very pleasant surroundings and as always, the room was filled with much chatter and laughter, as members caught up with news following the Christmas break. After the meal was finished, a short business meeting was held, which included a vote to choose the resolution we would like to put forward at the National Federation Annual Meeting. Finally, Celia Howe thanked everyone for attending and wished all members a happy new year. The next meeting will be held at Weybourne Village Hall on 5th February, when we shall be entertained by Barrie Morris, with a talk about the Weybourne Mad Hatter.

The Friends of All Saints Church Gresham

All Saints Gresham secures National Lottery Heritage Fund Grant All Saints Gresham, through a sub-committee of its PCC, The Friends of All Saints Gresham, has been successful in their bid for grant funding for their project to repair and renovate and to widen community’s use of the 1000 year old, round towered, All Saints Church in Gresham. Made possible by National Lottery players, the £140,900 project funding received will enable the Friends to implement the two main aims of their project. Urgent works of repair and improvement to the church buildings will be carried out including the installation of a new rainwater dispersal system, external repairs to the north chancel roof, tower, windows and external walls and internal renovation including re-plastering the nave. Work is expected to commence in the Spring of 2020 and to take approximately six months to complete. The improved building will be developed as a community hub, through a programme of events to improve the wellbeing and cohesion of the community in the widest sense, ensuring that as many people as possible can appreciate, understand and enjoy the heritage of All Saints Gresham. The programme of events will include the creation of an online data resource for those tracing their family history, using information from the historic graveyard; a children’s guide to the church, produced by pupils from Gresham Village School; a series of lectures on local history focussing on areas connected with the heritage of the church and a programme of mixed arts courses for those who are sometimes overlooked in society. The churchyard will also be used by the school as an outdoor classroom and the church will be available as a concert and exhibition space for the community. The Friends of All Saints are very grateful to National Lottery players and all those within the local and wider community of Gresham and North Norfolk for their support and previous fundraising for this project. All Saints Gresham will become a warm and welcoming hub, playing an active and diverse role in the life of its community. Commenting on the award, Julia Drury, chair of the Friends of All Saints, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that, thanks to National Lottery players, we’ve received this support, from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. All

All You Need is Love

Saints Church has been an integral and iconic landmark within the village and the North Norfolk landscape for more than 1000 years. Now we can really believe our vision will come to fruition: the dry and refurbished church building will provide an enhanced environment both for church services and a wide variety of social, educational and cultural opportunities, for the community and visitors to Gresham, for the next 1000 years”. Collective heating oil buying combats winter heating blues – and helps support community projects

With the colder weather of late January and then February on its way, a big worry for many people who live in ‘off-gas’ areas is the cost of heating oil, so a Norfolk charity is encouraging consumers to buy collectively and save money – and help support community projects at the same time. Dereham-based charity Community Action Norfolk runs a collective buying service that helps make buying heating oil less stressful and more manageable. ‘ThinkingFuel’ offers consistently low prices on heating oil by encouraging people to buy as part of a bulk-buy scheme. “Heating oil is an unregulated commodity” explains Community Action Norfolk’s Chief Executive, Jon Clemo. “Unlike mains gas and electricity, there are no rules and regulations or price controls. Oil can be subject to dramatic price fluctuations and you can’t easily buy it in small helpings just when you need it.” Comparing prices for oil is very difficult for the consumer because of fluctuations in price between days, quantities ordered, locations and delivery times. It pays to be part of a collective buying scheme like ThinkingFuel, which are increasingly popular because they offer a fair, flexible and accessible way to buy oil. “Everyone in the scheme gets a really low price on their oil because it’s bought in bulk. All our members pay the same low price per litre no matter how much they order and buying from ThinkingFuel also helps us at CAN support community projects across the county as well as combat fuel poverty in Norfolk.” said Mr Clemo. “We operate ThinkingFuel in partnership with AF Affinity, Anglia Farmers’ buying group, whose expert professional buyers are able to negotiate considerable discounts. The big plus is that, because all our members are buying from the same supplier, they get a very competitive price and we do the ringing round for you, saving you time, stress and making sure you do get a fair price.” ThinkingFuel is already well established with three thousand members across Norfolk. The bulk ordering takes place on two key days each month to maximise savings, which is when members can get the best price, but they can order oil on any working day of the month and still get a competitive price. For more information call 01362 698162 or visit www.thinkingfuel.org.uk and to find out more about the work of CAN in supporting community projects visit www.communityactionnorfolk.org.uk

New centre for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths given go ahead at Gresham’s School

North Norfolk County Council has granted planning permission for a new centre for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education at Gresham’s School in Holt, Norfolk. The Dyson Building has been made possible by an £19 million donation from Sir James Dyson, Founder of Dyson and former Gresham’s pupil. The donation is in recognition of Sir James’ ties with the School and is an acknowledgment of his gratitude to the School for giving him the financial support to continue his education following the untimely death of his father, Alec, who taught Classics at Gresham’s. The building has been designed by Dyson’s architects Wilkinson Eyre, the first practice to achieve two consecutive wins of both the Lubetkin Prize and the Stirling Prize. Construction will be completed by Kier with other contractors working in partnership to deliver unique aspects of this state-of the-art building. Construction will commence in Easter 2020 and the building will be completed by September 2021, in time for the start of the new academic year. Douglas Robb, Gresham’s Headmaster, said: “The Dyson Building represents an aspiration jointly held by Sir James and Gresham’s School; that learning should be joined up and innovation encouraged. “The granting of planning permission edges us closer to delivering a truly inspiring STEAM centre where technology, high-quality teaching and collaboration will be brought to the fore. The building also provides opportunities to expand the outreach programmes Gresham’s currently runs with local schools and community organisations. “The positives and possibilities are endless, it’s a very exciting time in the history of the School and the benefits of this enormously generous gift will be far reaching.”

Fakenham Choral Society – Mendelssohn’s ‘Elijah’, Saturday March 14th

On Tuesday 14 January, after a very tasty lunch, Peter Lawrence gave a fascinating talk called ‘Beneath the City Streets’. Peter introduced himself as a former Metropolitan Police officer working in Special Operations at Scotland Yard, looking after the Royal Family and the Embassies. Unusually, he was tasked with investigating underneath the streets of London! Peter explained that subterranean London comprised a network of rivers (for example, the Westbourne, Tyburn and Fleet), tunnels (including the Tube and the old Post Office railway system, now a tourist attraction) and sewers. Archaeological finds from Roman, Saxon and medieval times reveal the layers of London’s history, Peter specifically mentioning the Temple of Mithras (which one can see free of charge) and the crypt beneath St Bride’s Church in Fleet Street. The ‘Great Stink’ of 1858 led to Joseph Bazalgette building a new government-funded sewer system. The massive project involved using 315 million bricks and 25,000 labourers. Bazalgette also built architecturally amazing pumping stations in strategic places; they were cathedrals to sewage! To support and hide the sewers along the Thames, Bazalgette created the vast embankments that still exist today. The construction work made the river narrower, thus turning the Central London part of the Thames into a canal. At the end of the talk, Peter proposed wryly that we should close the M25 (not his favourite motorway!) and put the traffic underground, acknowledging that using tunnels in this way was not a new idea! On behalf of the 38 members present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Peter for his interesting talk. Our next meeting at the Links Hotel in West Runton will be held on Tuesday 4 February when Stuart Fidler will give a talk called ‘The Falklands War – My Personal Journey’. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our monthly meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

Following the great success of their Cantatas and Carols concert in December, Fakenham Choral Society’s March performance tells the story of old testament prophet, Elijah. Mendelssohn’s epic oratorio, influenced by the choral works of Bach, Handel and Haydn, has remained hugely popular since its first performance at the Birmingham Festival in 1846. A dramatic first part sees Elijah challenging the priests of Ball to a trial of fire between their god and the God of Israel. After the failure of the priests of Baal to invoke theirs gods, fire descends from heaven at Elijah’s call. In Part Two, a despairing Elijah goes into the wilderness, is tended by angels and ascends triumphantly into heaven in a chariot of fire. With the choir, four soloists and a large orchestra this is a concert not to be missed! The performance takes place at 7.30pm at Fakenham Parish Church on Saturday 17th March.

Tickets are £12 (advance purchases) or £14 on the door and available online through the choir’s website www.fakenhamchoralsociety.org by calling 01485 544335 or via choir members.

GREAT MUSIC AND LAUGHTER AT BRISTON!

Briston played host to the ‘Better Late Than Never Christmas Organ Show’ on Friday January 10th, and what a night that turned out to be! With live music from Mick Leary on Hammond organ and Yamaha keyboard, and several comedy items, including an amazingly funny 13 minute video of the trials of Benjamin Blige, father of the bride, about to make his speech at the reception, and realises he has left it at home. His hilarious adventures getting home and back included cameo parts from all the guys and girls who help put on the Briston organ shows every month - and what stars they proved to be! From the post lady getting her hand stuck in Benjamin’s letterbox to the bit where he nearly demolishes an ice cream van by backing into it, mayhem from start to finish was the order of the day! The January show is always a charity fundraiser, and this was no exception, as the proceeds from the show made £791.40 on the night, and with the further £656 raised during the last year, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital will be getting an overall cheque for £1447.40 - well done all of you, our wonderful supporters.

Our next show is on Friday February 14th, when the amazing keyboard player, singer and all-round super-guy Pete Shaw will be travelling all the way from Wales to entertain us. He got a standing ovation last time he played for us, and tickets are already selling well - and to all gentlemen reading this, with tickets at just £6 each, this could be a budget way to impress the lady in your life on Valentine’s night! (How do you spell cheapskate?) Seriously, you can book tickets now by ‘phoning 01263 860844 and talk nicely to Carol. It all happens from 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm) and is at the very comfortable Copeman Centre in Hall, Street, Briston. NR24 2LG - proceeds benefit the Copeman Centre’s own fundraising - so hopefully we will meet you all there! email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY

Monday 14th January saw the Society’s first meeting of the New Year. 16 members and one visitor from the King’s Lynn Philatelic Society came together for an informal sales evening. There was a good variety of items for sale, including albums of First Day Covers, packets of used stamps, both GB, commonwealth and foreign, a selection of mint material and postal history items. It was an opportunity to “talk stamps” and to catch up with each other as well as to buy and sell. The next meeting will be on Monday February 10th, 7.30pm, at West Runton Church Hall, for the AGM and a silent auction. This would be a good opportunity to come to meet members and to consider joining.

Enjoy a day’s singing and raise funds for the Admiral Nurses!

The day will be led by FCS’s musical director Mark Jones, who as a former head of Music at Gresham’s school and of Gresham’s Choral Society, and currently organist and choirmaster at St Andrew’s church in Holt, is a familiar face to many in North Norfolk. After two very jazzy years the 2020 Come & Sing Day will feature choruses from the more traditional choral music of Haydn’s ever popular oratorio, The Creation, which is full of memorable tunes and choruses. There will be morning and afternoon workshops and then a short free performance at 5pm when an audience is welcome to come along and enjoy the culmination of the day’s work. At the end of the free performance which lasts about 45 minutes, the audience is invited to give a donation to Admiral Nurses. The choir will be accompanied by Adrian Richards, organist at Kings Lynn Minister and a small band of instrumentalists. So brighten up a dull winter’s day and come and enjoy a day’s singing! Singers should register by Monday 10 February. For more information about the day and registration forms go to www.fakenhamchoralsociety.org or contact Rosemary Dear 01328 851776 or on dear_brian@hotmail.com. Come & Sing or Come & Listen but please come along and help raise funds for Admiral Nurses.

Fakenham Choral Society --- Come & Sing Day ---- 15 February 2020 Fakenham Choral Society is hosting a Come & Sing Day on Saturday 15 February 2020 in Fakenham Academy. The day is aimed at encouraging all singers, whether you sing regularly or have not sung for a while, to come along and have fun singing and learning together. Singers in all voice parts are most welcome. Fakenham Academy has plenty of free parking and a large hall. The Come & Sing Day aims to raise funds not only for FCS but also, with singers’ and audience donations and a raffle on the day, for the Admiral Nurses who support patients with dementia and their families. The charity would like to offer more support to Norfolk families but do not have the funds to expand their work. FCS has chosen this charity as the choir has had experience in recent years of some members suffering from this devastating disease and know that music plays such an important part in aiding the memory.

High Kelling Garden Club

On 13th January Dr. Ian Bedford, who was Head of Entomology at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, gave us a thought provoking talk entitled “Garden Bugs - Cohabit, Conserve or Control?”. We all live surrounded by a variety of “bugs” (invertebrates) although many are too small to be seen without a microscope. They are highly successful, making up 97 per cent of the earth’s animal species, and some have changed little since they left the sea for land 400 million years ago. Bugs are vital for sustaining ecosystems. Herbivorous bugs can be divided into chewers such as caterpillars, suckers including aphids and whitefly, and root feeders like vine weevil larvae. Plant eaters are often seen as the gardener’s enemy but they in turn provide food for other animals, including predatory beetles and wasps (chompers), spiders and predatory bugs (blood suckers) and parasitising insects. If left alone, a complex food cycle will develop which naturally reduces pest numbers. Life would be impossible without the pollinators - bees of all kinds, hoverflies, butterflies and beetles, and the composters - worms, woodlice and many slugs. However, if we feel we must intervene, physical control is the best option, either barriers to keep out the pest or vigilance and removing individuals as they appear. Chemical control is best avoided by gardeners as it will not discriminate between pests and beneficial bugs. Residues can last a long time in the environment. The Spanish Slug has arrived in gardens recently. They can be 6 inches long, are extremely slimy, will eat other slugs and snails and usually appear in their hundreds rather than singly. In the past I have chopped them with my trowel (while thinking of a bully I once worked for) but this exposes parasites that can infect pets, so I shall restrain myself to a bucket of soapy water in future. And leave most other species to find their equilibrium.

Council’s successful prosecution for fly tipping

SCRAP is an initiative across Norfolk which reminds people to check their waste is being taken away for disposal by a licensed carrier; these can be checked by asking for a Waste Carriers Licence or searching the company name on the Environment Agency website. People can avoid an unlimited fine by following the SCRAP code: · Suspect ALL waste carriers · Check with the Environment Agency on 03708 506 506 that the provider taking your waste away is licensed · Refuse unexpected offers to have waste taken away · Ask what will happen to your waste · Paperwork should be obtained – get a full receipt

A man has been ordered to pay £2900 in compensation and legal costs after being found guilty of committing a waste offence at Norwich Magistrates Court. In lieu of a fine, he must pay £1600 to a farming company affected by the incident and £1300 in costs for North Norfolk District Council’s, prosecuting, legal and investigative costs. The case involved a large fly tip of household and DIY waste from the Norwich area, onto farmland outside Fakenham. He admitted to knowingly causing or permitting the fly tip, by being the registered owner of the vehicle witnessed taking the waste. A landlord of the Norwich address gave a witness statement which included the vehicle, registration, and a description of the person who stopped and offered to take the waste from the site for a fee. Cllr. Nigel Lloyd, NNDC’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “Fly tipping will not be tolerated in North Norfolk and I hope this successful prosecution serves to warn people that we will actively pursue all cases of fly tipping in our District. North Norfolk is a beautiful place to live, the indiscriminate dumping of waste without any regard to our shared environment is totally unacceptable. I would urge anyone intending to use a third party to dispose of their waste to make sure they are a licensed waste carrier and to look to the SCRAP campaign for guidance.” email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

All of Norfolk’s councils, the Environment Agency, Norfolk Constabulary, and the NFU and CLA are joining together to support the SCRAP fly-tipping campaign. Incidents of fly tipping can be reported to the local Council for investigation.

If you are in a vacuum, and call out your own name. will you hear it? I suppose it depends if it’s switched on or off....

That’ more than 700 records up on last 1st Jan and 2 more species too – well done! I hope that all of you that took part in this year’s challenge to record as many bird species as possible in the NENBC area in one day had as good a time as we did! We were out by dawn but sadly due to family commitments this year (no offence meant!), back home by lunchtime but able to keep an eye on the garden for the afternoon. The Demise of Peregrine “46” It came as shock to me and several other of the Cromer Watchpoint team who belong to my U3A Birdwatching Group, when we were shown a dead Peregrine at Natural Surroundings on the Bayfield Estate on Saturday 4th January. It had been found on the previous day in the wet meadow on the north side of this small reserve. Power lines run along this part of the Glaven Valley and all signs point to this being the downfall of this young male. On the plus side it appeared to be well nourished and intact apart from a broken neck. Being the youngest and smallest chick of the brood, its survival chances were considered small (The survival rate of a peregrine chick in the first year is only 50%) but it had obviously thrived up to its demise. Let’s hope his brother and sister make it through the winter and go on to have families of their own. Photo courtesy of Nick Kimber. Young Volunteers share their passion and help raise funds to support other bereaved children

On Friday 29th November, Nelson’s Journey held their annual Christmas Quiz at Open in Norwich. As part of the evening a group of the charity’s young volunteers spoke about their experience of bereavement and encouraged attendees to help raise funds during the popular festive event. Danielle, Harvey and Josh spoke to an audience of over 310 people about who had died in their lives and shared projects that they have supported the development and delivery of which are benefitting Norfolk bereaved children and young people such as the Smiles and Tears Gift Box, a gift that can be purchased for a recently bereaved child containing helpful support, information, therapeutic activities and treats. The contents of the box were carefully chosen and created by the young volunteers to support recipients through the grieving process. With the help of the young volunteers, the event which was sponsored by Bateman Groundworks and hosted by Gary Stevens from Heart FM raised £7,000, this will support the services offered by Nelson’s Journey to more than 600 children and young people each year. Louise Archer, Events Co-Ordinator said “The Christmas Quiz is now in its 8th year has become a key calendar date for many of our returning guests. We were humbled that the young volunteers were happy to share their own experiences, letting others know that it is OK to talk about such an emotive subject is an incredibly important aim for our young volunteers.” The sell-out Nelson’s Journey Christmas Quiz will be taking place again in 2020, to register your interest please email louise@nelsonsjorney.org.uk

doubt Mark, who has lived and worked in China, will bring us right up to date by drawing parallels between the events of 1989 and the situation in Hong Kong and Taiwan today. The day school will be held in the Friends Meeting House, Church Street, Wells-next-the Sea. It costs £18 and will run from 9.45am until 4.00pm with a one-hour break for lunch. You can enrol online now by going to www.wea.org.uk/eastern and entering ‘Wells-next-the-Sea’ in the ‘town/postcode’ box at the top of the page. This will take you to the Wells courses. Click on the ‘view details’ button next to this course and then follow the ‘Enrol online’ link at the bottom of the page. Alternatively, you can enrol by phoning 0300 303 3464. Or just turn up on the day. And for further help, advice or details please contact Annie Whitelaw on 07856 792186 or email anniewhitelaw53@icloud.com.

As we said in last but one ‘Chronicle’ - and with great regret on our part - we are unable to offer a 7 week ‘long’ course this term. Instead we have two day schools organised, the second of which will be held on Saturday, March the 7th when Mark Felton will make a welcome return to Wells to talk about the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989. This was one of the turning points in 20th century history but it was not an isolated or entirely unexpected event. The day school will delve into the history behind the massacre, from the last years of Chairman Mao’s rule to the beginnings of China’s opening up to the West under Deng Xiao-ping. It will examine the events of the day in detail, show how modern China was changed forever and conclude with an examination of present-day Chinese society under the rule of Xie Jinping. And no

Clapham & Collinge Launch New Year Charity Lasting Power of Attorney Scheme

Make it your New Year's Resolution to get your legal affairs in order and plan for the future. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorneys throughout January 2020. We will also make a £40 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support 4 Norfolk based charities. Our chosen charities are Age UK Norwich, Keeping Abreast, North Norfolk Community Transport and Cruse Bereavement Care Norwich.

Although it is often difficult to think about, it is crucial that we plan for the future and ensure we can manage our financial affairs in the event of an incapacitating illness, accident or injury. Everyone understands the importance of a Will, but Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) are a bit more obscure in the public sphere and often people are not aware why they need them. Government research has made it clear that there are dangerous misconceptions about managing your affairs when you lose mental capacity….

• 73% of people think if a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. This is untrue. An LPA will however give you consent to access joint funds to pay and monitor financial aspects of a joint account.

• 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at

hospital, if you can't make them yourself. This is untrue. Medical decisions need the specific, agreed consent of the person involved, before a next of kin can make treatment or welfare choices on someone else's behalf.

(Powerofattorney.campaign.gov.uk, 2019) With this scheme we hope to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and highlight the importance of getting your legal documents in place for peace of mind.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint one or more people (known as 'attorneys') to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf.

This gives you more control over what happens to you if you have an accident or an illness and can't make decisions for yourself (where you 'lack mental capacity') or when you simply want to delegate the role to someone you trust.

There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney: • Property & Financial Affairs • Health & Welfare

When can they be used? Property and Finances – as soon as it has been registered • At the point you no longer have sufficient capacity to make certain decisions yourself or; • While you are still able to make decisions but are physically unable to carry them out or you want

someone else to make decisions for you Health and Welfare – can only be used if you cannot make the decision yourself (unconscious or lacking capacity).

Who can be an Attorney? • A family member • A trusted friend • A professional

What happens if I don't make a Lasting Power of Attorney? • No one has legal authority to act on your behalf – your spouse and children have no automatic rights to make decisions on your behalf • Someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order • This can be costly, time consuming and you may not end up being assisted by the person you would have chosen yourself

The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney will depend on whether you wish to have a Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney and/or a Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney prepared and registered.

To claim your discount and book your January appointment, please contact our Client Relations Team on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk Appointments must be booked by Friday 31st January and must take place by Friday 28th February 2020.

Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard. The bird with two bleak aliases.

About forty years ago I was strolling with a gamekeeper around his north Norfolk beat when the conversation turned to crows. It wasn't so long after that bleak winter 1976/77 when I had seen about a score of hooded crows on a field between Syderstone and East Rudham, a first sighting of that species for me. My friend referred to this black and grey cousin of the carrion crow as a "Dench" crow and when I pressed him he said "Dannish" (i.e.Danish) crow. This rang a bell for me. In my readings of the Norfolk segment of Henry Williamson's A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight, based around Stiffkey, I had read a passage where an old Norfolk man in that area had called the bird "Harra the Denchman". This nickname may be a thousand years old. In the Dark Ages, when the prayer of the settled Angles of the Norfolk coast was "From the fury of the Northmen O Lord deliver us", one King Harrald of Denmark was one of the most feared of the predatory Vikings who would strike with his ships of berserkers. The lookouts on our coast noticed that the migratory hooded crows came the same quarter on those bleak nor-easterly winds and named him after the dreaded king as "Harra the Denchman". The hooded crow has another nickname which is every bit as bleak if not, by imputation, as terrifying as the Norfolk one. That alternate sobriquet is "Royston". It came about when, in a dreadful winter in the nineteenth century, a whole flock of sheep fell in a great field near Royston in Hertfordshire. Quickly among the dead and dying of the flock were the hooded crows. I was reminded of this when wandering around a car boot sale at Cherry Tree in Fakenham. On the stall of Richard Willson was a canvas depicting a snowy landscape in bright sunlight and showing a fallen sheep with a hooded crow in close attendance. I hinted to him that this might relate to the Royston story of that crow and he researched the painting. It was a copy of a work by Joseph Farquarson (1846-1935) a Scottish painter who specialized in snowy landscapes. The mawkish allegory by Joneth behind the image was just the kind of theme to appeal to the Victorians but for me the "Harra the Denchman" of old Norfolk has more gravitas. Here is a simple but delicious cake, lovely with a dollop of crème fraiche on the side and a cup of tea. It is also a chance to get in some practice for the Great Holt Bake Off starting February 2nd – April 5th at The Venue. You can still enter if you’ve missed the date, just download the entry forms from the website, www.theholtbakeoff.com and return them with your entry money to Nelson House. ‘On your marks, get set, bake!’ Ingredients 250 gms clear Honey (plus extra to glaze) 225 gms unsalted butter 100 gms dark Muscovado sugar 3 large eggs, beaten 300 gms self-raising flour

To my friend’s astonishment, a police car pulled up to her house and her elderly grand-father got out. The patrolman explained that the old gentleman had been lost in the city park and had asked for help. "Why, Grandfather," my friend said, "you’ve been going there for 40 years. How could you get lost?" The old man smiled slyly. "Wasn’t exactly lost," he admitted. "I just got tired of walking."

Hancock and Steptoe's last laugh

In the mid-2010s, I was fortunate enough to share some correspondence with Ray Galton and Alan Simpson (via their ďŹ ne agent, Tessa Le Bars) and enjoyed the enormous privilege of receiving a witticism written by them for me in one of their replies. That’s from Galton & Simpson you understand, the best comedy scriptwriters in the world. The best, the very best. Not an everyday occurrence. Sadly - very sadly - both Ray and Alan have passed on since, but I treasure this brief correspondence with them very much. Ray Galton and Alan Simpson were, quite simply, the greatest sitcom writers of the 20th century. Not content with crafting pieces for comedy giants such as Frankie Howerd, they went on to create Hancock’s Half Hour and Steptoe and Son, redeďŹ ning what situation comedy could be. With such legendary lines as: ‘A pint? Why, that’s very nearly an armful!’ (Hancock’s Half Hour, The Blood Donor, 1961), they were famously precise about the words they used and the order in which they arrived. I ďŹ rst wrote to them in 2014 requesting an autograph and they kindly sent me a jointly signed photo, which was fantastic. But, a couple of years later I decided to push my luck a little and write to them again, this time asking a slightly cheeky question‌ ‘Dear Ray and Alan‌ I have something for you, one last request‌ A Writer’s Challenge‌ Could/would you describe each of the following individuals using only three words apiece? - Kenneth Williams / Tony Hancock / Sid James / Hattie Jacques / Harry H Corbett / Wilfred Brambell / Frankie Howerd / Eric Sykes / Spike Milligan ... and, of course ‌ Ray Galton & Alan Simpson.’ I had no expectation of a reply, but within days one did arrive by email. From the most successful comedy writers in the business. Imagine that feeling. And here’s what they said‌ ‘Dear Chris, thank you for the kind comments which are much appreciated. Unfortunately, things are not so easy for us at 86 as we are unfortunately OLD, ELDERLY AND AGED (pick whichever you fancy) and in any case would be DEFERENT, DEFENSIVE AND DIPLOMATIC. So please forgive us not being able to exactly answer your request, but instead, one of our signed photos is in the post to you with our best wishes.’ I was so pleased to receive this and still remember opening the email in a state of nervous excitement. A privilege beyond words and a correspondence I treasure deeply. Thank you, G&S, for everything. God bless and rest in peace. Christmas drink and drug driving campaign results

More than 700 people were tested in Norfolk during the Christmas drink and drug driving campaign with 214 drivers failing. The month-long campaign, launched on 1 December 2019, targeted drivers getting behind the wheel under the inuence of alcohol and drugs. Additional patrols and roadside checks were carried out with Norfolk having a 29% fail rate. In Norfolk 613 breath tests were carried out with 95 drivers providing positive readings (74 men/21 woman). Of the 100 drug tests conducted, 82 drivers failed (78 men/four woman). In addition, 15 people failed to provide a specimen and 22 people were arrested for being unďŹ t to drive through drink and drugs. During last year’s campaign in Norfolk 1,140 breath tests were carried out with 72 people providing positive readings, while 97 people failed drug tests out the 180 conducted. In addition, nine people were arrested for failing to provide a specimen while 11 people were arrested PBDN with border_Layout 1 10/10/2019 14:58 Page 1 for being unďŹ t to drive through drink or drugs. Chief Inspector Kris Barnard, Head of the Roads and Armed Policing Team said: "It’s disappointing to see that people are still prepared to

take the risk and get behind the wheel under the inuence of alcohol or drugs. "These people not only risk their own lives but the lives of others. We have ďŹ rst-hand experience of having to deliver the devastating news to the families of those involved in fatal collisions that their loved ones have died. We would not wish this on anyone which is why we work hard throughout the year to tackle these crimes. "Driving under the inuence of drugs or alcohol impairs your judgement, making your reactions slower and therefore increases the chances of being involved in a collision. Bombed out Bess by Frank Burrows

What follows occurred during eleven days of World War 2. The family loved their animals, Buddie the budgie talked a lot, Soprano the canary sang a lot, the Terrapins just swam about a lot, the main member of the animal family Bess the Alsatian dog just wanted to eat a lot, bark a lot, walk a lot, and sleep a lot, in that order. They lived in a pleasant area in the outskirts of Liverpool, Mother a fine pianist, in addition to her motherly duties, no mean task in wartime, also taught shorthand and typing at Skerrys college in the city during the evenings. Father was an overseas accountant with the British Insulated Cables in Prescot, he also carried out duties with the Home Guard three evenings a week, coming home quite deaf from being close to the anti-aircraft guns. The two children were not quite teenagers, you could say they were an average wartime family. During the 41 Blitz the main targets of the German bombers were the docks, railways, factories and of course the city centre, the family home was well distanced from those but had a railway line less than a mile away, which incidentally remained unscathed. On the first of the eleven days that followed the family was bombed out. What was described as a ‘stick’ of high explosive bombs and a ‘land mine’ descending by parachute decimated the area, several houses and a shopping area were totally destroyed, surrounding properties badly damaged, and a number of people killed and injured. The family home remained standing but was badly damaged and not safe to enter. The bombing, as was the pattern, happened at night time. The family had reacted to the air raid warning siren and moved into the Anderson shelter in the back garden situated about ten yards of the house. The only exceptions being the dog and terrapins, the dog refused to enter the shelter despite many temptations, so remained in the house with the terrapins under the stairs known as ‘a safe place.’ After the ‘all clear’ had sounded the family emerged from the shelter safe and sound to witness what devastation was to be seen by the light of the burning fires around them, it was only during the daylight of the following day they saw the real devastation caused by the bombing. There was no sign of Bess. A glance at the house showed the ‘safe under the stairs’ had vanished. Friends of the family gave them temporary accommodation until they could make other arrangements. It took another ten days to find somewhere suitable to live about a mile away, during that time members took it in turn to spend time searching for Bess, using the whistle to which she would usually respond without success. On the day the family moved to their new home, they all went to have a final look at the wreck of the house, it was assumed by this time that Bess was dead and gone, it was only as they were about to move off that they heard a weak bark and the dog emerged from the rubble a sorry looking sight covered with dust and dirt, a shadow of her former self, it was a moment of magic and joy, the family reunited. Bess lived long enough to move back to her rebuilt old home where she died peacefully aged thirteen, from then on she was always known as ‘bombed out Bess’. The terrapins unfortunately did not survive.

Time for Chess?

All Norfolk County Chess Association (NCCA) Chess Clubs have recently switched to digital clocks to meet the demands of the English Chess Federation (ECF) and The Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) / The International Chess Federation. As a result of this, Norfolk Chess Clubs have been donating their analogue clocks to other organisations involved in encouraging new and returning chess players. Here, Greg Tebble of Norwich Dons Chess Club is seen gifting 5 clocks to Aylsham Library Chess Group. The recently formed Aylsham Library Chess Group meets in Aylsham library on the last Wednesday of every month. Greg commented: “Norfolk Chess Clubs, like Norwich Dons, are pleased their surplus equipment is now being used by young players in local schools as well as more mature players in the Aylsham Library Chess Group and elsewhere. Hopefully this will help encourage more people to start learning chess or return to it in later life.” To find out more about Norfolk Chess Clubs visit: www.norfolkchess.org/clubs.html To find out more about the Aylsham Library Chess Group contact Jonathan Reeve Tel: 01263-733744 / e-mail: aylshamchessclub@gmail.com

Enjoy Adventures with Blakeney Rowing Club

Members of your local rowing club have been undaunted by the recent spate of inconsistent weather and high winds. Seeking any window of opportunity, crews have assembled at Barton Turf to row to How Hill, Wayford Bridge and beyond. See some great pictures of active rowers in beautiful Broads scenery on the club web site, crablakeney.wordpress.com. Several events and expeditions are being planned at the time of writing. These include a 14th February Valentine’s Day row on the Broads, an expedition to the Lake District between the 20th and the 28th April and a longer Broads exploration starting on June 29th and ending on July 3rd. These will be just some of the highlights of 2020 alongside the programme of competitive and social rows. It promises to be an amazing year. Hoi Larntan, the older of the club’s two skiffs, is currently being revamped in the Bayfield Brecks workshop. Thanks to all “Crabbers” who turn up on Saturday afternoons to help with the important maintenance tasks. When Hoi Larntan goes back on the water, then Bluejacket will receive some care from the team. If you wish to be part of the fun, then phone Humphrey on 07542371469. Rowing from Barton Turf is a great experience and you could come along for a trial row. In fact, you are entitled to three such rows before deciding whether you wish to join the club. Coaching and lifejackets are always available. Get rid of the winter blues and come skiff rowing in great company. Hope to hear from you soon. Barry Howes.
