Inside Cromer’s New Accessible Toilets
Cromer’s Visitor Centre has been fitted with Changing Places assisted accessible facilities
North Norfolk District Council, with supplier Closomat, have installed a Changing Places assisted accessible toilet in the Cromer Visitors Centre building. With Council investment, Cromer’s Visitors Centre now has one of the most advanced and accessible facilities available. The Changing Places toilet provides accessibility at the focal point for the whole North Norfolk area, making it more equipped for the increased tourist interest in the town. Project Support OďŹƒcer Darren Payne explained that “Without such toilet facilities, tens of thousands of disabled people are deprived of enjoying numerous activities most of us take for granted, as they can’t ďŹ nd suitable toilet facilities. In worst case scenarios, they face having to be changed on the oor, or just not visit somewhereâ€? The Changing Places toilets provide users with a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench and either a tracking or mobile hoist system. They are suďŹƒciently spacious, with due care and attention paid towards the requirements of the user. Each toilet holds adequate space in the changing area for the user and up to two carers, with a centrally placed toilet (with room) either side and a screen or curtain to provide privacy. They are equipped with a non-slip oor, large waste bins for disposable pads and a wide tear-o paper roll to cover the benches, upholding cleanliness. Cllr. Emma Spagnola said: “Having a Changing Places in Cromer is going to make such a dierence to so many disabled adults, children and their
families. Not only for local people but for tourists too, for example, I am aware of two families who are already planning their summer holidays here because this facility will make the town so much more accessible. Everyone is entitled to have this basic need met and I am very proud of NNDC for jumping on board and providing this. I am looking forward to see more rolled out across the District.â€? Closomat has become the leader in the design, supply, installation and subsequent maintenance of Changing Places; visit their website for support information for all involved in the speciďŹ cation and build process. The Council Cromer Changing Places facility is the ďŹ rst of 7 planned across North Norfolk, with one planned for each town; Proposed facilities in Fakenham and Wells-Next-The-Sea are due to begin construction in early 2020. Duncan Baker Newsletter
Dear all, I would like to start by thanking all those who voted for me in the recent General Election. A 14,000-strong majority was a clear mandate from North Norfolk to get Brexit done, and to move forward with addressing the many important issues you talked to me about during the election campaign. I’m pleased to say that within weeks I’m doing just that. The EU Withdrawal Agreement has been passed and, on the 31st January, we will leave the European Union with the votes of the 58.9% in North Norfolk finally respected. Both locally and in Westminster, my team is taking shape. I’m proud to have a constituency office in North Walsham – where I have had so much support during the last year. Soon I will look forward to hosting regular surgeries around the constituency. North Norfolk will be my first priority. In these first few weeks I have hit the ground running, working hard on behalf of many constituents. You may have seen me asking questions in the House about improving our ambulance response times, protecting our farming community, the environment, and what the government is doing to help our High Streets. I have met with Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to discuss the urgent issues surrounding ambulance response times, the need for improved facilities at Cromer Hospital (with additional mental health support), and met with local ambulance staff to discuss their concerns and learn how we might provide a more responsive ambulance service for this area. This is being followed up by meeting with the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital chiefs: I want to see our Accident & Emergency unit radically improved, which will benefit many North Norfolk residents. I have been made the Vice-Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on moving towards carbon Net Zero, and am meeting with ministers to urge them to help the farming community who are under serious threat, with some of their irrigation licences being revoked. Of course, every day, I’m helping many people with queries and issues, and am loving meeting incredible constituents all around North Norfolk who do so much for their communities. Sally Collins_Layout Page 1 There is much 1to 06/01/2020 do, but I am 19:08 enjoying representing you and trying to make our lives better in our wonderful North Norfolk home. I look forward to seeing you soon. Duncan Baker, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk

News from The Venue
New Community Theatre in Holt! My apologies if my column seems to convey a perpetual state of excitement, but many great things are happening at the Venue, Holt Community and Arts Centre! Thanks again to extraordinary local generosity and support, we are having our Hall floor restored to its former glory, and also working very hard towards realising our dream of having a full Theatre at the Centre. We are in exciting talks with the newly formed North Norfolk Players, and we hope that they will be our new resident Amateur Dramatic Group, providing regular quality live performances, including a Pantomime this year. In order to make this happen, we are moving ahead with plans to remove the old stage, and bring in a new one, along with new lighting and rigging, to be able to provide Holt with a fantastic new Community Theatre Venue. This is no small feat, with much money needing to be raised quickly, but thanks to the amazing support of local company Emotive Light and Sound of Fakenham, we are hoping to be fully open for Theatre by May, potentially sooner. This paves the way for exciting new possibilities for us, including being able to host our local Holt Primary School for School Productions and workshops, improved facilities for the Holt Festival, the development of further Theatre Groups to come and perform here…the potential is huge! Many groups that meet in the Centre also use the stage, and this will provide much better facilities for them, not to mention that the entire look of the Hall will be hugely improved by the renovation of the floor, which is costing £4000, a sum which is being very generously paid for by individual sponsors. We are incredibly blessed by this support, which allows us to improve our facility for the benefit of many groups which meet in the Centre. Work is due to start on the floor around the end of February. On the subject of entertainment, don’t miss our fantastic first Film Festival, which starts on 21st Feb, and includes great films, interviews with producers and Directors, delicious home cooked food and of course our refurbished bar. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the best of Filmmaking with an East Anglian and Norfolk connection, at very affordable prices – individual screenings are only £5, and the full weekend ticket is only £30, giving you 2 free screenings! There’s a great social aspect to this too, as you can enjoy lunch or supper with others, or a drink at the bar between films. The Venue continues to go from strength to strength, with new user groups and events happening on a regular basis. Check out the website for updates on what’s on, or pop in and see us…the door is always open! If you would like to be involved as a volunteer in our regular events and activities, do give us a call, there’s all sorts of interesting things to do! www.holtcommunitycentre.org.uk or call 01263 713427.
Holt & District Dementia Support
'Best Foot Forward' for Holt & District Dementia Support in 2020 thanks to a wonderful fundraising effort by Fairfax and Favor. The amazing amount of £1,890 was raised through a Christmas Raffle organised by Fairfax and Favor, one of the new businesses on Holt High Street. Mr. Benjamin Grint, Head of Corporate and Retail, presented the cheque to Mrs. Claire Roberts, Chair of the charity on Saturday 18th January. He explained that he had wished to support a local charity at Christmas and, as caring for those living with dementia was dear to his heart, he had approached Holt & District Dementia Support to be the charity of his choice for the raffle. Mrs Roberts thanked Mr Grint, his staff and customers for their generosity and went on to explain that Holt & District Dementia Support is intending to expand its provision of services within the next few months, and will be offering a new fortnightly afternoon service in addition to its existing weekly Poppy café and Home Visiting service. This new venture will involve volunteers providing care for those living with dementia within a pleasant, social setting whilst their carers have some valuable respite time to themselves. Fairfax and Favor's generous donation would be a tremendous bonus in helping to fund the initial costs and provision of this further service. For more information about the services offered to those living with dementia and their carers in Holt and the surrounding district, please view the charity’s website at www.holtdementiasupport.org.uk or contact Claire Roberts on 07760 462693.

Big Thank You to Mrs Sal Jacob
Dear Jo, I would be grateful if you would print a big thank you in your letters page to Mrs Sal Jacob of Holt and her family and friends that attended the funeral that I conducted for her husband Michael Jacob on the 16th January. The donations that were given in support of the Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club in Cromer has been absolutely amazing. These donations amounted to £485 which will go a long way in helping our local North Norfolk Veterans, many of whom are still suffering as a result of their military service. In view of the recent notification of the possible sad financial problems of the veterans’ charity “Combat Stress”, this is especially welcome. We will be able to use this money to show the appreciation in which our Veterans are held by our local people and also to alleviate some of the issues which those facing loneliness, PTSD and life changing injuries are experiencing. Indeed, we aim to support and help each other to restoration and enjoying life once again. Talking therapy and support from colleagues is so essential as we share our experiences. I do of course, extend an open invitation to any Veteran out there who is willing to come along and share breakfast with us on the 2nd Sunday of the month from 1000 to 1200 at Breaker’s Café, Garden Street, Cromer. Contact me for further information. Every blessing, Bishop Dr. John Mills RN ,Chaplain, Royal Naval Association and Armed Forces Veterans Breakfast Club.
The RAF Air Defence & Radar Museum needs you!
Dear Jo, Last year the RAF Radar Museum had another very successful year. Not only did we celebrate being open for 25th years but we grew in volunteers. We are open 4 days a week (and each Bank Holiday Monday) and we need more volunteers to join our happy band of over 60 women and men who help keep us going. We are looking especially for people to help in our lovely cafe on a Saturday and as room guides. We seek volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life. Our current team has women and men ranging from 18 to 80. We can guarantee that you will have an enjoyable time and make new friends and you will be helping a charity to keep going and help us continue to provide an award-winning experience to our visitors. We offer our volunteers a friendly place to come to and we organise an annual trip and a Christmas lunch as a thank you for all your time, plus there are free teas and coffees always available in the crew room. Why not visit us and find out more? For more information telephone the manager 01692 631485.or email: curator@radarmuseum.co.uk Kind regards, Lynn Kerslake
The Wealthy Widows by the Blakeney Players
Dear Jo, Once again, we were spared a tiresome trip to a London Theatre to see a play, and instead treated to a brilliant performance of “The Wealthy Widows” by the “Blakeney Players”. We were getting carried away with all the wonderful songs and joined in with “Lili Marlene”. Thank you again, “Blakeney Players”, we are very much looking forward to next year’s play. Yours sincerely, Karin Ashby 2 Friends

Sincere Thanks
Dear Jo, Sadly, my husband, Bill, lost a long and brave fight against cancer on 21 December last. I would be very grateful if you could pass on my sincere thanks for the kindness and unstinting support of our wonderful family and friends. The true friendship and love they showed helped Bill and continues to keep me going in these difficult days. They are also very generous, donating £683 to the Big C and the new cancer unit at Cromer Hospital in Bill’s memory. With many thanks Your sincerely Pat King

From Holt Holistic Centre Do you feel ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
• Are you fed up with feeling tired all the time? • When your head hits the pillow do thoughts begin to race through your head and you can't sleep? • Are you constantly feeling worried or anxious about the future? • Do past events play over and over in your head? Why does this happen? Did you know you have nearly 60 to 120 thousand thoughts per day? This can equate to 300 per minute. Just as you read this thoughts are running on auto. No wonder you feel tired, exhausted. 50% of these thoughts will be negative self-talk or habitual thoughts that you have every day. I know how this feels I have been there. I wasn’t aware of the effect this has on the body and the stress it causes. I thought everyone felt like this and that it was normal. I couldn’t relax; I worked till late in the evening, I always found something to do. Time went on and I ended up in hospital totally burned out. I couldn’t move or do anything for weeks. Then I suffered chronic fatigue. I felt so out of balance, my energy levels were not serving me. I couldn’t even walk the dog without having an afternoon on the sofa to recover. It was a frustrating and depressing. You will be pleased to hear I am fully recovered, I found a way to get back to my energetic self again. Restoring the balance I found a simple but effective tool, which empowered me to increase my energy and rebalance my life so I could walk the dog again and feel positive. I use it on a daily basis. If I overthink, I use it to relax me. This powerful relaxation tool is called The Balance Procedure. Having used it in my own journey to recovery, I wanted to share this with others and so I qualified as a practitioner. I can teach you how to use this technique to rebalance your mind and body, the same way I did and still do today. How different will your life look if you restore the balance and have more energy? Cromer Hospital 2020 Cancer Unit Appeal
1 in 2 people will develop cancer in their lifetime. It is extremely likely that you or someone you care about has been or will be affected. Currently, if you reside within North Norfolk and are suspected of having cancer, your diagnosis and treatment will take place at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. However, we are delighted to announce that March 2021 will mark the opening of the new North Norfolk Macmillan Centre at Cromer Hospital. Patients residing in the towns and villages across North Norfolk will then be able to avoid the numerous lengthy journeys to the NNUH, often while feeling unwell. They will have speedy access to first-class diagnosis and treatment of cancer closer to their home. The new services available will include Prostate Biopsy, Chemotherapy and Oncology. The new Centre will also provide 20,000 clinic, diagnostic and treatment visits per year. The building cost is being shared by NNUH and Macmillan Cancer Support. Nevertheless, further funding is still required to purchase the highly specialised equipment, furniture etc. at an estimated cost of £500,000. Cromer Community and Hospital Friends (CCAHF) have accepted the challenge of raising this money. The wonderful generosity of the public over the past year by fundraising and bequests to CCAHF has resulted in raising £150,000 towards our target. However, that leaves us with £350,000 still to raise in the next 12 months – a very ambitious figure for a small charity. We are certain that, with your enthusiastic assistance, we can work together and make this goal a reality. Please support the 2020 Cancer Unit Appeal in any way you can – by donating, fundraising, being sponsored etc. Every £1 raised is truly appreciated and will make an immense difference to cancer care in North Norfolk. Seaside theatre’s plans for a sparkling diamond anniversary
Six decades of summer drama will be celebrated by a seaside theatre in north Norfolk this year. Sheringham Little Theatre will mark the 60th anniversary of its popular summer “repertoryâ€?, which uses a small group of professional actors to stage a series of varied plays from comedies to thrillers. A special diamond anniversary season will feature ďŹ ve plays from the 1960s to the noughties including Season’s Greetings by Alan Ayckbourn, Out of Order by farce master Ray Cooney, along with Stags and Hens by Educating Rita writer Willy Russell. But the venue is also planning some anniversary “extrasâ€? including a brand-new drama penned by up-and-coming playwright James McDermott. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “Our audiences love traditional farces, but they are mostly from a certain era, and we thought the 60th anniversary was a great chance to bring the format up to date by putting the plot into a contemporary setting. We are hoping to get Arts Council support for this new writing projectâ€? This year’s panto will be Aladdin, and the youth musical group is rehearsing Guys and Dolls for Easter. Ostage this year the theatre is planning to refurbish its exterior and improve window ventilation in the Hub coee bar. The theatre’s annual general meeting heard the Hub takings, which were up 10pc, provide vital income to help fund the venue’s arts oering – as do the contributions of local councils and corporate sponsors. Last year the Little Theatre attracted more than 30,000 people to 400 events from live drama and music to cinema and live screenings. Chairman Richard Ellis reected on a successful year, only made possible by the “remarkableâ€? combined eorts of a sta team, aided by Granite_Layout 15:20 1 of the community. New seating an army 1of 08/01/2020 volunteers and thePage support had provided a major improvement in audience comfort and was carried out following customer feedback.

Love of the Broads Give Grant to RAF Radar Museum
The RAF Air Defence Radar Museum is proud to announce the success of a recent application for grant funding from Love of the Broads. The grant will initially be used to record volunteers' memories in regard to their service years at RRH Neatished. Stage two of this project will be recording visitors and former Neatishead personnel who may wish to share similar stories. Manager Lynn Kerslake said she was delighted that this project has now come to fruition. Grateful thanks go to Love of the Broads as it now gives the Museum funding to purchase relative equipment and funding to display these precious memories both in digital/audio format. Accepting the cheque in January in the Cold War Room at the Museum was Trustees Carl Lamb and Nick Farmer, along with Peter Howe from Love of the Broads.

A LOST WORLD by Leslie Kinsley
POACHING DAYS (part 1) When I was young, the poor could have rabbit, but pheasant and partridge were for the rich landowners only. The gamekeepers were there to keep this so. Of course this just presented us workers with a challenge we could not resist. My neighbour Winnie said her father kept a gun by his kitchen window and trained his dog to nip out and fetch anything he managed to hit. I went quite a bit further than that. When I married and we were renting a room in a friend’s house, her father, Bob, was a keen poacher. He was a little chap, always bent over, who looked at you sideways with his eyes half shut. He looked to be winking at you all the time, as if he was sharing a secret joke. He worked as a tractor driver for a local farmer, and he always had his gun on the tractor with him, just in case! He had a locked shed at home that no-one else was allowed to enter, but I did see the large sack balanced on his bicycle handlebars each week as he headed off to Mr Perry the local game dealer. He owned a wonderful dog, half lurcher, half greyhound called Fly. She was so clever. I watched her go after a hare, but instead of chasing it directly, she would work out which edge of the field it was aiming for, and cut it off. She went missing one day and we found her body in a local pit. We suspect that she was poisoned by a gamekeeper, but we could not prove it. Bob got away with his poaching at work because his Boss was never around to catch him. This farmer used to stay in bed late, doll himself up, and go off to Norwich. His poor wife seemed to do most of the work. Bob and I would out with our guns in the evening. We would shoot the pheasants as they roosted in the trees. The gamekeepers tried to scotch this by nailing wooden pheasants up there. If he heard the shot and came after us we would have nothing to show for it. The best way to counter this was to kick the tree and watch carefully. The pheasant would crane its neck to try and see what had disturbed it. We had arrangements in place whenever we went out, that if the keeper turned up we would split up and meet later. Bob always seemed to know where the keeper was so we never got caught although we had a few close brushes! One of these was when I disobeyed Bob and took a shot at a pheasant only 100 yards from the keeper’s front door. I was full of mischief in those days. We had to run for it!

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY THE VIRGIN, KELLING
Ev ery one welc ome to join us
The Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month. St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. The Church contains many interesting features, including a 14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi. The Church draws a congregation partly from outside the Village from those who value traditional services using the words of the Book of Common Prayer.

BISHOP OF NORWICH LENT APPEAL 2020
Dear Friends, The generosity of people both within the church and the wider community often overwhelms me. Not only do they generously support the church day to day they respond with the same generosity to fund raising events and special appeals. Our current Salsa (Sound and Light at St Andrews) appeal which is funding the rewiring of the church and a new LED spotlight system, as well as an upgrade of the present organ and the redeocration of the church, is a case in point. Over £80,000 has already been raised towards the total costs and I cannot thank those who have already supported this appeal enough. But of course, as well as caring for the parish church as a house of prayer and a venue that is fit for purpose by the whole community we also aim to look outward and to the needs of others, locally, nationally and internationally. Throughout the year people give genersously to charities and good causes and the church is enabled to help those whose needs are greater than our own. The Bishop of Norwich’s annual Lent Appeal is a yearly reminder for us to reflect on the needs of others, lest we become too inward looking. Through self denial during Lent we aim not only to strengthen our self will to resist temptation but to give generously. Bishop Graham comments, “Even in our secular age Lent is still associated in the public mind with self-denial. It runs counter to our consumer culture. We’re reminded that true fulfilment is found in something more than pleasure and plenty. As we enter into Jesus’ time in the wilderness, and seek to draw close to him as we relive his final days, we discover anew how he gave himself away for the life of the world. That’s why we have a Lent Appeal. The generosity of Jesus Christ inspires our own.” The Diocese of Norwich is linked with the Church Papua New Guinea and this year’s Lent appeal aims to provide the Diocese of Dogura with funds to buy a vechicle in order to help them as they seek to reach out and connect with remote and isolated communities in education and health care. On each Friday during Lent, following our mid-day service we offer a simple lunch of soup, bread and cheese for which we ask for a donation for the Bishop’s Lent Appeal. Following christian tradition we encourage people to fast on Fridays, to go without meat and give to those in need. If you are giving up something for Lent then you may wish to give what you save to a favourite charity or good cause or you may wish to support the Bishop’s Lent Appeal. I leave you with some words of St Paul, “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Every blessing, Fr. Howard

Don’t Miss Our Film Festival Opening Reception
on Friday 21st Feb @ 6pm at The Venue, Holt Community and Arts Centre ~ ~~~ Followed at 7.15pm by an exclusive interview with ‘The Final Reel’ Director Jonathan Blagrove by Anwen, Lady Hurt
Evacuees at Gresham’s
One of the early signs in Holt that Britain was at war was the arrival of evacuees in September of 1939. The subject had been discussed at a Parish Council meeting in May and the Government was drawing up plans for the evacuation of children from London and the Home Counties which were put into action as soon as war was declared. At Speech Day that July Gresham’s Headmaster Philip Newell had declared the School ‘near ideal from the point of view of Air-Raid Precautions”, an area to which children would be sent in time of emergency”, and each boarding house had its own shelter by the start of the new term.
Forty boys and girls soon arrived by bus from the East End of London, spending their first night in Holt sleeping in tents in the churchyard before being allocated more suitable accommodation. Most of the children slept in the Headmaster’s house, Howson’s, with a few in his own home, but many were unaccustomed to sleeping in beds, and spent their first night at Gresham’s sleeping underneath on the floor as was usual in their impoverished homes. Staff and pupils staged a play ‘Tons of Money’ and a party in Big School, with a Christmas present for each child, to entertain evacuees and arriving troops, and an old Victorian villa in the town was made ready as a sick bay.
As the North Norfolk coast was appearing more and more likely for a possible landing place for a German invasion, however, many of the evacuees were sent home for their safety, and Gresham’s itself was evacuated to Cornwall from June 1940 to 1944 while the military occupied the School. As part of our commemorations for the forthcoming WWII anniversaries this year I am trying to find out more about the evacuees, who they were, where they came from, how long they stayed in Holt, and what became of them. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who had information, or perhaps even memories of these little wartime refugees.

‘MY NORFOLK, MY HOLT' – with BRIDGET PEARSON
The next interview, in the ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ series, at Holt Library, is on Thursday the 20th of February with Bridget Pearson (retired local vet), between 11.00 and 12.00 noon. Bridget was born in 1957, in what was West Runton Maternity Hospital. She lived from then until 1980 in Stiffkey, then in Holt for 2 years, in Melton Constable for approximately 10 years, in Bayfield Brecks for 2 years and the Gatehouse at Bayfield for 11 years. Since 2006 she has lived in Brinton. From 1980 to 1982 Bridget worked in Holt and Sheringham, then from 1984 to 2019 in Holt. She started school at Stiffkey Primary. And when this closed went to Wells Primary, first the original school and, when it moved, to the current Primary School. She went on to Wymondham College for 5 years, where she did her O levels. She attended Fakenham Grammar School, for the Sixth Form, from 1973 to 1975. Bridget went on from there to study veterinary medicine at the Royal Veterinary College London from 1975 to 1980. After qualifying she worked as a Vet at ‘Gledhill and Allison’, from 1980 to 1982. As a Vet in Brackley, Northants, from 1982 to 1984. She then returned to Norfolk in 1984 and has worked and lived here
ever since. Bridget says that Norfolk is still rural and that she loves the marshes and the heathlands. She loves the wonderful skies and the darkness at night. She likes Holt as it still has local shops and a variety of food sources. She is a Member of: The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons; The British Veterinary Association; The Sheep Veterinary Association; The World wildlife Fund; The RNLI; The Rare Breed Survival Trust; The Veterinary Wildlife Society: The North Norfolk Harriers (she is the ‘Guardian of the hounds’); The British Hors Society; The Castlemilk Moorit Sheep Society (where she is on the committee); and she is a Theatre Royal Friend. These sessions are about valuing the contributions of individuals to the life of the community, past and present; about exploring Holt from different perspectives. Participants talk about the Holt and Norfolk they know and love, past and present; how it was when they first knew it, and how it is now, both from a personal and a professional point of view. Recordings of past sessions of “My Norfolk, My Holt' are available as part of the Norfolk Heritage Centre Podcast webpage, which can be found here: www.thenorfolkheritagecentrepodcast.wordpress.com/my-norfolk-my-holt Booking for these sessions is recommended and helpful. (Telephone Holt Library on 01263 712202.) The event is free but donations to the library are welcome. Tea and coffee are available. ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ – is a way of bringing together different members and sections of the community, as well as valuing the place of the library. The next ‘My Norfolk, My Holt, is with David Harris (North Norfolk Railway), on Thursday March 19th 2020
WOULD LIKE TO MEET… A RESCUED HORSE!

healthy futures by sponsoring one of the Sanctuary’s ‘Adoption Star’ horses or donkeys for a loved one or a friend this Valentine’s Day. Through sponsoring an Adoption Star, they’ll not just be purchasing the perfect gift for any animal lover, but every penny will go towards the care of horses and donkeys in need – so they’ll feel the love too! Sponsoring an Adoption Star costs from just £15 per year and every recipient will receive an Adoption Pack including their new four-legged friend’s story and photograph. They’ll also be sent a personal invitation to their birthday party, as well as a year’s access to their Adoption Star’s online diary, full of stories and images from their life at the Sanctuary. All of Redwings’ Adoption Stars live at the charity’s visitor centres so can be visited for free on any open day. Debbie Scott, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising, said: “Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show someone you care and, through sponsoring one of our Adoption Stars, you’ll also be showing animals who have been through some terrible ordeals that you care too. Everything we do is funded 100% by donations from the public, so a little love in the form of sponsorship really will go a long way. “Despite their past neglect, all of our Adoption Stars have wonderfully friendly personalities, so whatever you’re looking for – be it lovable, loyal or even a good sense of humour – we have a new four-legged friend who you would definitely like to meet!” Redwings’ visitor centres, including Redwings Aylsham, north of Norwich, and Redwings Caldecott, near Great Yarmouth, could also be the setting for the perfect date this Valentine’s Day. From Friday 14th February to Monday 24th February, each centre will be hosting a range of activities themed on all the things we love about ponies. Visitors will be able to enjoy fascinating walks and talks and take the opportunity to meet some of the charity’s smallest rescued residents, including Shetland pony and Adoption Star Sampson! This handsome chap, who lives at Redwings Caldecott, was rescued in 2004 when he was just one year old. He was desperately ill with a disease called strangles and his owner could not provide the specialist treatment he needed, so they contacted Redwings for help. Today Sampson has made a full recovery and is a real gent! Visitors can also pop into the centres’ cafes for a warm cuppa and home-cooked lunches, and a browse of their gift shops. And to celebrate the holidays, from Valentine’s Day until 24th February, Redwings is offering 25% off on all Adoption Scheme gifts, including stationery, magnets, mugs, bags and homewares, which can be redeemed in visitor centre gift shops or online using the code ‘Adoption20’. Redwings Aylsham, in Spa Lane, Aylsham (NR11 6UE) and Redwings Caldecott, off Beccles Road, Fritton (NR31 9EY) are open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 10am to 4pm – and entry is free. To sponsor an Adoption Star for Valentine’s Day, pop into your local visitor centre, call 01508 481000 or visit www.redwings.org.uk/adopt.

Do I do?
Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr Getting married is a legal contract. That’s why people need a lawyer to get ‘unmarried’; or, at least, the legal system oversees and regulates divorce. The legal act with the lowest level of mental capacity necessary is that of marrying. That could explain a lot, ha ha; I hear you say! The Court of Protection, which is the section of the court system which oversees the affairs of those unable to manage them for themselves, has recently granted permission for a 28-year-old man to marry his fiancée, even though he lacks mental capacity to manage his property and affairs. The groom, called “P” in the reporting of the case, so as to protect his identity, has had learning difficulties since childhood. The loss of his leg in a road traffic accident resulted in him receiving an injury compensation award of £1,500,000. Adrian Mundell, P’s ‘deputy’ (i.e. the person appointed to manage P’s finances) spent P’s compensation on buying P a home and has invested the rest for P. Early in 2019 P announced his intention to marry a woman, whom he met three years ago and who now lives with him in his home, along with her two children. One is tempted to ask Caroline Aherne’s question, on the eponymous Mrs Merton chat show, to Debbie McGee: “What was it that first attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels?”, but that might be unfair. Adrian had serious concerns about P’s decision to marry, and especially its financial implications. P had made a Will leaving everything to his parents; but as marriage revokes a Will, P would be intestate and his new wife his primary beneficiary, if P died. Adrian felt he had to take
steps and so applied to the Court to prevent the marriage. As a reason he gave P’s privately-expressed indecision about the marriage and the doctor’s assessment that P is easily persuaded, has difficulty saying ‘no’, is very vulnerable and is open to being exploited. Adrian was concerned that P did not understand that if he married, and then divorced, his wife would have a financial claim. Adrian applied to the Court for a declaration that P did not have mental capacity to marry. The judge did not agree. He noted that P had already been considered to have capacity to make a Will, for which the necessary degree of mental capacity is ‘higher than that needed validly to contract a marriage’. He said that people can have capacity to marry, without needing to understand how divorce financial arrangements work. The judge said that the amount of P’s compensation had been for his needs alone, and so, if the marriage went ahead and then ended in divorce, the scope of the claim of the wife would “necessarily be extremely limited”. The judge added that there were numerous legal authorities which have emphasised the near-immunity of a personal injury award from a divorce financial claim, and so, the divorcing-wife’s claim would be limited to relieving her serious financial hardship only. And so, let us hope that they both live happily ever after.

New Farm Aviation Heritage Group
As chairman of New farm aviation heritage group I would like to report on another successful year at the museum. After fixing the portacabin roofs last year it was expected a dry winter would be nice but alas a few leaks still crept in these were soon dealt with by Trevor Hewitt (proprietor) and his loyal band of volunteers, so we were off to a good start. Several new exhibits were presented during the year including a complete navigator’s uniform and equipment, a turret possibly from an Avro Anson and new display cabinets built, improving conditions of storage and display. A nice number of visitors at each open day helped raise much needed funds through donations, as did visitors to our new shop, a very successful venture as was our ever-popular tearoom now due for expansion hopefully during this year. All maintenance is done by volunteers and paid for by donations. Our proprietor, Trevor is available to give talks to groups. The target for our group this year is to purchase another portacabin to help Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole with the display of new items. The approximate cost is £1500 so hopefully range of family, property and business we will achieve our aim. legal matters with care and professionalism.

Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard. Flying freedom or caged confinement?
Many years ago, a Norfolk born colleague of mine asked me what bird had the nickname of "draw-water". He described the bird as highly colourful and I can only imagine that he'd seen one and had asked a rustic elder what the bird was, receiving the colloquial sobriquet "draw-water “as an answer. Well, I didn't know, but knew of someone who would. The late Tony Tuddenham, gamekeeper at Leicester Square Farm, South Creake, was one of that generation who grew up in the hungry thirties when country boys often became knowledgeable ornithologists. As soon as I mentioned "draw-water" to Tony he replied: "King Harry" and I knew from that widespread sobriquet that our bird was a goldfinch. Why, however, is a goldfinch called a "draw-water" in Norfolk? I decided to inquire through the Eastern Daily Press and soon got a beautiful explanation. John Bircham of Hoveton explained that the flight of the goldfinch mirrors the action of a lift-pump. I had used when as a boy and knew that the motion of the handle involves two lesser dips to load the internal cylinder with water, followed by a big dip to lift it high enough for the water to pour out of the spout. That's how the goldfinch flies; two small dips followed by a big dip and hence the nickname draw-water. However, it didn't end there. The late Ron Fiske of Morningthorpe Manor, Norfolk, countered the flying metaphor with another solution. He said that there was a description in one of Dickens' novels of a finch which was caged and drew its water from a little container, suspended outside its cage on a small chain, which it had to draw up in order to drink. The issue even drew the skills of the EDP's celebrated cartoonist, Tony Hall, in one of his unsurpassable caricatures of the goldfinch with alternate names. The problem was that both explanations seem highly plausible. For all that, however, one of them is offensive. In his Auguries of Innocence, William Blake says: "A robin redbreast in a cage/puts all heaven in a rage" and his sentiment must apply equally to the beautiful and melodious goldfinch. So when I sit here in my armchair and see the dipping flight of the goldfinch between the telephone wires in the street, and remember the lift pump I used at Little Melton over sixty years ago, I am content to accept the flying freedom explanation as opposed to that of caged confinement.
The Gallant Gardener
to chit! In other words, they start to grow shoots that will eventually produce more potatoes. The second thing is to decide what I am going to grow, with both flowers and vegetables in mind, looking at the catalogues and making a list of types and varieties to try. I used to grow lots of different vegetables and never eat half of them! So, the rule is to grow only what you like. A variety of squash that I grew last year, called Honey Boat, is a very sweet squash and makes wonderful soup, squash chips and will roast. This variety takes no looking after once you have planted it out and I think you would be able to grow this in a container. The third thing is to get some potatoes in containers for a very early taste. Everybody can grow something in containers, whether they be large pots, wooden boxes, guttering or as I have done used the old plastic rubbish bins. I have cut them down to about two-thirds of their size, you can use plastic compost sacks or any large container. I then drill holes in the side near the bottom, so that they don't dry out completely but there is drainage. I then fill the bottom with a mixture of compost, manure and soil for about 12” or 30 cm, take three potatoes preferably an early variety or a salad type that you enjoy eating and lay on the compost. Cover again with another 12” of compost and water. Keep in a cool well-lit place greenhouse/conservatory until the frosts have finished then they can go outside. As the potatoes grow continue to fill with compost around the potato tops, until it gets to the top of the bin. The early potato will be flowering in about 10 to 12 weeks and then you can dig down and find your new potatoes. Don't tip them all out, just look for the bigger ones and the smaller potatoes will continue to grow, this way you will maximize your crop. It is surprising what you can grow in containers, on a wall, on a concrete floor using pots or bags, it is endless fun experimenting whether it is peas, beans, rhubarb, salads, fruit or flowers, go on give it a go…… In Africa they use bags a lot for growing and also a system called Keyhole Gardens, where a hole for adding compost is in the middle and will continually feed the garden, look them up on the internet.
Starting the New Year well Growing in Containers
By the time you read this, we will be into February. This is the time of the year that I start to get the itch to sow seeds and plant, looking forward to new crops and displays of flowers. The first thing I do in the New Year is to buy my seed potatoes, laying them up in seed trays and put them in a cool lit place so that they start

Say Cheeese!
Holt’s Hidden Gem Q
In an effort to wean myself and the family off crisps after too much consumption over the festive season, I have come up with these super tasty, healthy and savoury oat cakes, which are full of good ingredients and very easy to make. They are heavenly on a cheese board, or a great accompaniment to homemade soups, as a change from bread, and so are very handy for anyone like me who is trying to cut down on their wheat intake. True there is spelt flour in there, but it is a much easier flour to digest than regular wheat flour, and consequently kinder to your tummy. Medium oatmeal can be purchased cheaply at most health food stores, and ground flaxseed can be obtained from Lidls cheaply, and also at many other supermarkets, although prices do vary. You don’t need much parmesan to get that wonderful rich, sharp flavour, so either get a small amount from the cheese counter, or shop savvy again at Lidls. With the addition of tasty poppy seeds, you have an oatcake choc full of fibre and heart healthy olive oil – so much better for you than crisps!!

Ultimate Vegetarian Roast Loaf
5oz porridge oats 5oz medium oatmeal Salt to taste Pepper to taste Tsp Italian herbs or thyme (optional) Heaped tblsp poppy seeds Tblsp ground flaxseed Handful of flaked almonds, broken up Hpd tblsp spelt flour 2 hpd tblsp finely grated parmesan cheese 75ml extra virgin olive oil 200ml very hot water
We invite you to come and browse through our eclectic treasure trove, brimming with pre-loved donations just waiting to be re-loved.
Combine all of the dry ingredients together in a large bowl and then add the parmesan and mix well. Pour the oil into the middle, and add in the hot water, bringing it all together with a large knife, until you have a dough. Form into 2 balls and rest for a few minutes, and then roll out onto a floured surface to a depth of a few millimetres. Cut out rounds with a biscuit cutter to your desired size, and place onto floured baking trays into a preheated oven on 180° for approximately 25 mins, or until lightly golden and cooked through. Cool on a wire rack and keep in an airtight container for up to a week, or freeze on the day. Carolyn Burn

Fakenham Choral Society – Mendelssohn’s ‘Elijah’, Saturday March 14th
Following the great success of their Cantatas and Carols concert in December, Fakenham Choral Society’s March performance tells the story of old testament prophet, Elijah. Mendelssohn’s epic oratorio, influenced by the choral works of Bach, Handel and Haydn, has remained hugely popular since its first performance at the Birmingham Festival in 1846. It is a highly dramatic work with many beautiful arias and choruses as well as portraying the vivid character of Elijah himself. A dramatic first part sees Elijah challenging the priests of Baal to a trial of fire between their god and the God of Israel. After the failure of the priests of Baal to invoke their gods, fire descends from heaven at Elijah’s call. In Part Two, a despairing Elijah goes into the wilderness, is tended by angels and ascends triumphantly into heaven in a chariot of fire. With the choir, four soloists Angela Brun (soprano), Tabitha Reynolds (alto), Dan Bartlette (tenor), Simon Crookall (bass) and a large orchestra this is a concert not to be missed! The performance takes place at 7.30pm at Fakenham Parish Church on Saturday 14th March. Tickets are £12 (advance purchases) or £14 on the door and available online through the choir’s website www.fakenhamchoralsociety.org by calling 01485 544335 or via choir members.
OPEN GARDEN FUNDRAISING EVENT – CHESTNUT FARM, West BECKHAM
Thanks to the kindness of John and Judy Mcneil-Wilson, as part of the National Garden Scheme, Chestnut Farm in West Beckham will open from 11am to 4pm on Sunday, March 1st. All proceeds from light refreshment sales and other fund-raising activities on the day will be donated to Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society. John and Judy (who until recently sang regularly with the choir) have decades of gardening experience between them and have been opening their garden to the public as part of NGS for nearly 20 years. Spring bulbs including snowdrops, anemones and crocus will take centre stage. There will also be plants on sale from local nurseries. Standard NGS Admission charge of £5 (children free) will apply. Members of the choir will help staff the gate and refreshment area. Please note that wheelchair access can be limited during bad weather. Do come along to enjoy this beautiful garden (and the delicious refreshments!) and support the choir at the same time.

Ode to a Mother-in-law
Ode to a Mother-in-law. No matter what I say or do, it's never good enough! As far as Ma-in-law’s concerned, my housework makes her scoff! The house is far too dusty; my cooking makes her sneer; My ironing is just a joke, compared to hers, I fear. So I've been saving really hard, to buy a special treat. A holiday for Ma-in-law, a pre-paid, one way seat! Somewhere hot and far away, where she can fly or sail. Then I can live my life in peace, on this I will not fail! Or maybe she can take a cruise around the freezing fjords, The temperatures will match her moods and icy, biting words! I’m saving all my money to make this dream come true, And pray she sails right off the end, or flies into the blue! Frances Wraight

North Norfolk Vikings
North Norfolk Vikings have been action over two weekends at Norfolk County Championships held at the UEA Sports Park in Norwich. This competition was for all county qualifiers. We saw the Vikings taking a small team of 3 boys and 5 girls over both weekends, they had 59 individual events with 17 final races and the team came away with 41 personal best time which is a 69.49% success. The top 3 placings from heats and finals were 6 firsts, 3 seconds and 2 thirds. The medals we came away with were 3 gold, 2 sliver and 1 bronze. This was excellent for our small team; I was very proud of all the swimmers over the past two weekends. North Norfolk Vikings’ next competition is 22/23 of February at the Warwick Thompson meet in Thetford. Well done to all those for taking part at the Norfolk Championships this year. Special thanks to the team managers, parents and all swimmers. Many thanks, Mr Sam Watts, Lead coach.

World Premiere musical stage-work The text of ‘Mankind’ was written and first played in East Anglia around 1465 It is a lively social satire. 278. White to play and win
Solution to No. 277: 1…Bh2+ 2. Kf1 (2. Kh1 Bxd3 threatening 3… Nxf2 mate) 2… Rxd3 3. cxd3 Bxd3+ 4. Re2 Nxd2+ wins the house. 3. Rxe4 Rxd2+ is no better. In No. 278, the third of 6 game-positions for current solving, White has considerable pressure but his Q has to keep control of his P on f2. However, one move should be enough for Black. Difficulty 2.

Apart from our master solver Gerry Enslin, no-one managed our (admittedly difficult) 3-mover No. 275, so the winner of minicompetition Nos. 273-5 last year is Edward Hackford (Blakeney), by a narrow margin of 3 points. Well done, Edward! The Holt Chronicle Issue 443 14th February 2020
Norfolk’s 2020 Rapid-play Chess Championship
Fifty-two chess players, from Norfolk and beyond, recently took part in a Rapid-play Congress, held at Roxley Hall in Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich. Players were given just 20 minutes and an additional 10 seconds per move to complete all their moves in each of their six games. The event required considerable stamina as well as chess prowess. The joint winners in the Championship Section were John Anderson (Lowestoft Chess Club) and Stephen Orton (Norfolk & Norwich Chess Club). Get your pet “summer ready” with Toll Barn Vets
With the festive season finally over, many of us have made New Year Resolutions to make our own healthier diet and lifestyle choices. These choices could also benefit our pets! Exercising is a great way of getting both you and your pet active and also a great way of bonding with your pet. Regular exercise helps keep the heart and lungs healthy, build muscle, maintain a healthy weight and provide mental stimulation. Don’t forget exercise is not only for our canine pets, cats can be encouraged to exercise by playing with toys or using “treat balls” to give them their usual food ration, whilst rabbits can be encouraged to exercise with foraging games. We understand it can be really difficult to monitor our pets’ weight and resist those appealing eyes asking for treats however, research from the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) suggests 92% of owners were unaware that their pet was an unhealthy weight. This is important because as little as 20% extra weight can significantly increase the risk of diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease, respiratory disease and certain cancers. Pets, much like humans, come in many different shapes and sizes and relying on numbers can be dangerous. When assessing a pets weight it is not just the number on the scales which is important. It is equally as important to use a body condition score technique rather than just relying on the numbers. It is far better to use a body condition score which assesses characteristics such as ease of feeling the ribs and waistline to determine your pets’ ideal weight. Don’t worry – Toll Barn Vets is here to help! We understand how time consuming and difficult it can be to help your pet achieve their target weight and even to work out if your pet needs to work on their festive bulge. Our friendly team of veterinary nurses are offering free of charge nutrition clinics for our patients which include body condition scoring, advice on diets and feeding as well as general health and exercise advice depending on your pet’s condition. The clinics are free and available for dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. To book an appointment with our friendly team please give us a call on 01692 407126.
CT Scanners allow a complete 3D image of the pet, greatly assisting in diagnosis and management of tumours, orthopaedic disease, elbow dysplasia, spinal disease and much more!

Did you enjoy playing netball at school and want to get back into it at a gentle pace?
Holt has ‘Open Library’ meaning you can access the library between 8am and 7pm Monday to Friday and 10 - 4 Saturday and Sunday. To use this service, you need to sign up to open access at any library during staffed times.
Or maybe you are just seeking a way to find fitness in a fun friendly setting? A walking netball group in North Norfolk is helping people achieve those goals and are looking for more people to join them. The hour-long sessions are at Erpingham’s Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm and Friday mornings from 10.30am. Coach Ros Fretwell said: “We have people of all ages and abilities, from teenagers to pensioners, who come and enjoy the sessions. “Some have not played netball since school and want to do it again to get active. Others simply enjoy a social way of keeping fit and boosting their mental health and wellbeing.” Walking netball is similar to the core game, but with no running or jumping and more time to hold on to the ball. The Erpingham sessions have been running for two years, on the MUGAs basketball court, but have now acquired netball posts and there are plans to have a properly marked out court too. Sessions cost £2 at the MUGA which is next to village hall (postcode NR11 7QD). For more details contact Ros Fretwell on 01263 768262 or email her on rosbrookside@aol.com

One morning Emma woke up with a start. Her husband Jim asked what the matter was, she told him, “I just had a dream that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine’s day. What do you think it means?” “You’ll know tonight,” Jim said. That evening, Jim home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, Emma opened it – only to find a book entitled “The meaning of dreams”.
