Council budget agreed
£430.4 million spending plans which boost children’s and adults' services and a Council Tax rise of 3.99 per cent have been agreed by Norfolk County Council. Today’s full council meeting supported the latest revenue budget. It is funded by Council Tax, which will rise by 3.99 per cent – 1.99 per cent for general Council Tax and two per cent under the Government’s adult social care precept. This will see the county council’s share of band D bills rise by £54.27, to £1,416.51. Councillor Andrew Proctor, the council’s leader, said: “We are setting this council on course for a balanced budget for 2020/21. We will continue to deliver vital services to all the people of Norfolk, within our finite means. We are not hiding from the financial challenges of future years.” Councillor Andrew Jamieson, cabinet member for finance, said: “You have a budget before you today that is robust, balanced and sees not only services maintained but invested in.” The £430.4 million net budget is larger than originally proposed in January, due to £2.7 million additional Council Tax income from the district councils, which was higher than forecast. This has allowed further cost pressures in children’s services to be addressed. The council is funding £70m of additional service pressures next year, with significant adults' and1children’s services: Sally Collins_Layout 1 investment 06/01/2020 in 19:08 Page £34.7m for adult social care, including £6.1m for demographic pressures, £7.6m for inflation and £7.9m for pay and price pressures £28.1m for children’s services, including £3.7m for inflation, £14m for
budget pressures including looked after children, £4.5m for home to school transport and £7.1m for staffing pressures, including investment in the service’s new operating model and resolving the structural budget gap In addition, the council is: Investing £887,000 in the fire service, to support the proposals in the integrated risk management plan Supporting the environment policy, with a budget rising to £350,000 over two years The council has budgeted to save £395m between 2011-12 and 201920. Savings proposed for 2020-21 to 2023-24 total £63.8 million, with £40.2 million to be delivered in 2020-21. Since 2011, the council’s funding from the Government has reduced by £220m and cost pressures have risen by £440m.

County Councillor News
from County Councillor Dr Marie Strong Wells Division marie.strong@norfolk.gov.uk; 07920 286 597
Update regarding the Independent Local Government Commission for England Review of Norfolk County Council Divisions:
This is my eleventh year as county councillor and I have never known such confusion over an important issue. Whilst I have managed to check parish councils have received updates obviously I could not circulate such information to all residents. The following details, hopefully, will not be further amended: ‘The Commission has asked Norfolk County Council to provide updated electorate forecasts by 11 February and will extend the existing consultation period by six weeks to 24 March. Any party that has already made a submission based on the existing electorate figures is invited to make another submission once the updated electorate have been published. When they have been received, the new electorate forecasts will be published on the Norfolk review site at http://www.lgbce.org.uk/ all-reviews/eastern/norfolk/norfolk-county-council. As a result of this, the public consultation on the draft recommendations will now take place from 2 June - 10 August 2020. Norfolk County Council Budget 2020 I am writing this newsletter on the evening of 17 February having returned from a long and contentious session at county hall regarding the county budget. Details can be found in the following press release: https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/news/2020/02/council-budget-agreed To learn about the debate which took place access NCC website for the minutes of the meeting. Speeding: To deter speeding several parishes now have ‘Village Gates’ – letting drivers know they are approaching housing and pedestrians. Instead of gates or as well as other parishes have opted for Sam2’s with flashing lights indicating speed. Gates: Cost will be dependent on width of verge, height and style of gate with costs likely to be between £500 and £1000 per individual gate, fully installed. Purchase only price of gates can be found on the ‘Glasdon’ website. SAM2: Cost will be dependent on requirements but
likely to be in the region of £4K. Both Gates and SAM2 are acceptable for application to the NCC Parish Partnership - 50% paid by town/parish 50% by NCC. Details of the Partnership is likely to be sent to local council this Spring for applications by December. Outcome will be known by March/April 2021 in time for installation in the following 12 months. Speed Watch: Whilst some parishes have tried Speed Watch and been disappointed other parishes continue and are satisfied with the outcome. Raise the possibilities at parish council meetings with your local police officer. Reporting Highways Concerns: Rather than wait to attend a Parish Council for reporting highway problems (potholes etc) speed up repairs by reporting issues direct to highways@norfolk.gov.uk or telephone 0344 800 8020. Broadband Checker: More residents now have the ability to access fibre broadband but are not up-to-date with how to check what is available to them. Therefore, I have copied below a checker which for the vast majority of properties will provide an accurate result. However, occasionally there are properties where the data is inaccurate. If the checker shows availability contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) which in turn will contact Openreach. If Openreach identifies that the checker has given incorrect information the ISP will advise you accordingly. I am assured that on balance most properties will return the correct information, so it is worth the effort. https://www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband/. Having used this link press ‘Use our fibre checker’ button. Enter your postcode, tick the box to say you’re not a robot and then click on the green search button to the right of the box where you entered the postcode. Pick your address from the list - it then either shows services as available or says whether something is planned. When services are available it has a ‘View Providers’ button which shows which Internet Service Providers are offering services at your address. If a positive response check with your ISP and find out what Openreach tells them. (Regret the checker is not infallible but best on offer at present.) Upwards and onwards

News from The Venue
It’s Murder at the Community Centre! By the time you read this, our Hall oor will have been sanded and revarnished, making a huge dierence to the look of the Centre. It’s been amazing to see the transformation that has happened in such a short time, and most of it thanks to a dedicated group of hard-working volunteers and generous sponsors, who all share our vision for the potential of our local facility. Part of my remit is to ensure that we have plenty of activities and new initiatives happening at the Venue, and the newest are Murder Mystery Evenings, a fun and interactive evening’s entertainment where you team up with other sleuths to ďŹ nd out whodunnit! Local renowned scriptwriter Andrew Taft is turning his considerable talent and experience to writing new material for these evenings, and there will be delicious food and our bar open. Attendees are encouraged to get into the spirit by wearing costume appropriate for the evening’s entertainment, the ďŹ rst one on 30th May being a 1940’s VE Day theme. Watch out for more details, and to book your tickets in advance. The Community Centre is very excited to be heading up the Town’s 1940’s Weekend Event this year, as Duncan Baker is now extremely busy representing our area as our MP. He has handed over a very successful town event into our safekeeping, and we will do our utmost to ensure that it continues to bring trade, energy, entertainment and opportunity to Holt this year. It’s a very big event to organise, but we have a fantastically dedicated team on the Committee, many of whom have served several years ensuring the success of it for the town, and I’m very excited to be at the helm of such a talented group of people. It takes many months of planning to produce something of this scale, and many hands to the pumps, so if you would like to be involved in any way (and there are many roles!) please do get in touch in the usual ways. All the money raised goes to local charities, ensuring that the ďŹ nancial success of the event goes to bless local people and organisations. Keep a look out on our new website, www.thevenueholt.com for updates and news of all that is going on, as there are many dierent groups and activities at the Centre every week. Also new for the coming season are 3 new artists starting workshops for you to learn and develop new skills. All 3 have dierent styles and approaches, and are very experienced artists and teachers, so it’s a great opportunity to either learn if you’re completely new to art, or develop and hone your skills for those who are more experienced. Joan Sandford-Cook also has a wonderful exhibition coming into the Gallery in early March. As always, lots of exciting things happening at The Venue! Carolyn Burn, Chairperson

Trustee of Holt Youth Project
Dear Jo, After many years of wonderful service, John Allison has decided to stand down as a Trustee of Holt Youth Project. We all owe John an enormous debt of gratitude. It was John, as one of our founders, who twenty years ago project managed the erection of our new building and was instrumental in getting Holt Youth Project up and running in its new premises. Over a period of about four years, John worked patiently with the architects, the planning department and the builders to give us the facilities we now use every day. Over the whole period of his involvement with Holt Youth Project, with his passion to help the children of Holt, John has been a warm friend, a loyal supporter, and a tireless fundraiser. His was our voice on the Town Council. We are enormously grateful to John for everything he has done for us over such a long period and wish him a well-earned and fulfilling retirement. Jeff Wood, on behalf of the Trustees.
Thank You
Dear Jo, In Memory of Doreen Hines David and Brenda would like to thank everyone who made a donation in memory of Doreen. We have been overwhelmed by people’s generosity. Norfolk and Norwich Hospital Charity Cromer will receive £1.331.50 towards the Cancer Centre there, St Andrews Church also received £326.50. Once again, we would like to thank you all for your support. David and Brenda
Tread the boards and laugh along with the North Norfolk Players!
Join the North Norfolk Players as open auditions take place for an evening of amusing one act plays to be performed in venues around North Norfolk this May. From the murderous humour of ‘The Poisoner’, to the surreal homegrown fantasy ‘The Reality Control Game’, and the chance to take on a pivotal role within the infamous Little Grimley Amateur Dramatic Society, the results are bound to be hilarious (and perhaps a tad chaotic, in the fictional village of Grimley!) Within these plays there are a variety of roles available both on stage and off, so hopefully there will be something of interest to all. Beginners are welcome, with training and support provided. Auditions take place at 7.30pm on Thursday 27 or 7.30pm on Friday 28 February at The Venue, Holt Community and Arts Centre, Kerridge Way, Holt NR25 6DN. A small annual membership fee of £10.00 is payable to cover expenses whencreating productions. For more information, or if you are interested but unable to attend auditions, please contact NorthNorfolkPlayers@gmail.com, follow the group on Twitter @NNPlayers or telephone Hannah on 01263 860871.

Following the meeting, Jacquie Aldous from Swanton Morley gave a floral demonstration entitled Encore – The Autograph Collection. All her beautiful arrangements were linked to autographs she has collected over the years and she amused us with some funny stories of how she’d amassed the autographs of famous celebrities, musical stars, footballers and flower demonstrators to name but a few. Next month Jo Poulter from Peterborough will be demonstrating ‘Over the Rainbow’ on Monday 2nd March. This will be the first meeting of our flower club year and the annual subscription of £42.00 will be due. From Holt Consulting Rooms. The Beauty of BoweN - March offer: £5 off 1st treatment
With Bowen (a.k.a. The Bowen Technique or Bowen Therapy) small rolling-type movements are performed over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue. The extremely light pressure is what makes this technique so unique. How can this light pressure make any difference? Just imagine a pin and a balloon, the more tension you build in to a structure, the less pressure you need to apply to change it. Or imagine wearing a T-shirt and twisting the left-hand corner of it, you would see the material stretching – that’s where the tension is, and it would feel uncomfortable. All I need to do to release the tension is unwind that twisting. After all, the body is not merely bones stacked on top of bones: it’s a series of tensions. This process could explain why even a small number of Bowen treatments may reactivate the client’s recovery process, when healing from trauma, sickness, injury or surgery has stalled or reached a plateau. It also emphasises that Bowen is holistic in nature, i.e. each treatment affects the body as a whole, not just the condition presented. Short-term (acute) injury is often addressed in three to five sessions, each lasting 45-60 minutes. Long-standing (chronic) conditions may require further care. Many clients also visit for regular wellbeing sessions, to unwind, feel relaxed and balanced-up. is on Friday the 20th of March from 7.00 – 9.00pm with storytellers Jonathan Lambert and Jim Kavanagh
Jonathan Lambert is a storyteller, musician and composer, writing soundtracks for theatre, short films and installations. He has worked in the British Museum and managed a West End cinema. His latest show, Dark Matters – Tales of a Horned God, was conceived while studying for a Master of Music degree in Utrecht. Jim Kavanagh has, in his shady past, been an Illustrator, Storyteller, Educator (in History and the odd bit of Science), Tour Guide, Playwright, Actor (sort of) and forgetful Businessman. Amongst many other daft costumes, he once performed in a bear suit with no eyeholes. Each session is held in the lounge bar of Holt Community Centre, and is a focused discussion/interview, lasting about an hour, with a person or persons involved in some significant way with the arts (in the broadest sense). There will be time, at the end of the interview, to put questions, have a drink, mingle, make new contacts, and share thoughts and ideas.

St Andrew’s Thursford Celebrate a ‘big win’ on the Lottery!
“It felt just like winning the lotteryâ€? said Steve Yerby, Church Warden of St Andrew’s Thursford, when a letter arrived announcing that the National Lottery Community Fund had awarded the church a ÂŁ40,000 grant. The money will help fund a scheme to ďŹ t out the church building as a community hub for Thursford, which has no village hall and has long since lost its shop and school where people could gather in the past. The project includes laying on water and drainage, installing a wheelchair friendly toilet and a kitchenette, providing disabled access and repairing Victorian windows which are distorting and cracking. Success in winning the award is the direct result of support and involvement from all parts of the Thursford community who have attended numerous fund raising events and shown their enthusiasm for concerts, meetings, clubs, workshops and social gatherings which will now be able to be held in the church, along side monthly services, in comfort. As the award letter states, “We want to help your community thriveâ€?. “Pulling together funds for our project has been a long haulâ€? said church treasurer Chris Rheinberg, “but we are now fully funded and we are all so grateful to the National Lottery, who along with the North Norfolk Big Society Fund, National Churches Trust, Norfolk Georey Watling Trust, All Churches Trust and the GarďŹ eld Weston Fund have made it possible.â€? Need a Helping Hand?
A LOST WORLD by Leslie Kinsley
POACHING DAYS (part 2) One foggy Sunday morning Bob suggested we go out after some pheasants. He had been putting out food near the railway line to lure them there. We had just found them and started to shoot when we heard the gamekeeper coming. Bob sent me to hide behind a holly bush while he hid his gun. The gamekeeper greeted him and asked him if he had heard shots. ‘I heard some shots from the railway line,’ Bob replied. The keeper thanked him and carried on. Another time, we were out at a pit by the railway line and about to start shooting when we heard the noise of a latch closing and realised that someone was crossing the line towards us. Away we went! After one successful night we took the bag of pheasants into Bob’s shed (not his locked one) and emptied them out. One bird had only been knocked unconscious and it came round and started to flap all over the shed looking to escape. Tins of nails, paint tins and tools were scattered everywhere. I was laughing so hard that I could not help Bob to catch it. You should have heard him swear! I kept on poaching after leaving Bob. My best method was a trap which I kept near the Meadow in Briston. It was in a hedge between two local estates. I regularly got pheasants there and of course they were excellent eating as they contained no shot. One day the trap disappeared. My nephew told me he had called at the gamekeeper’s cottage and he had seen it propped by the door! I went after rabbits with ferrets and a net, but my Boss did not mind that. He saw me one day in the yard with my sack of rabbits and said, ‘I’ll never be troubled by rabbits while you are about’ What he did not know, luckily, is that on one of my lorry trips, I had found and bought a huge net, about 100 yards long. My friend Norman was with me and when we got back to the farm, we tried it out in a field of cabbages. We had no idea how to use it properly, so it was never any good. It pulled up a lot of cabbages though. Thank goodness the Boss did not notice! My old Boss was still driving in his eighties, but as he had grown up with horses, he was not very safe as a driver. One evening, he put me on the back of his old Morris truck and drove across the fields. I had my gun and we were after rabbits. It was fairly successful, but he suddenly started driving towards the deepest pit on the farm. I was terrified that he would not stop in time, so I jumped off to save myself and shouted. He managed to turn it at the last minute. He then noticed I had disappeared and came back for me. He was very puzzled as to why I had done this! In later years, as I got close to retirement, I took up gamekeeping. I loved doing that, almost as much as I enjoyed poaching. I will tell you about that another time.
New play area unveiled in Holt Country Park Families enjoy new feature
An official opening ceremony was held on Feb 17 for Holt Country Park’s new play area. Councillors from the Town and District Councils together with the public and NNDC’s Countryside Rangers celebrated the opening of the exciting new facility, which includes a modern zip line, bug see-saw, and 3 different swings, one of which is an inclusive bucket swing and a ‘me & you’ swing where parents and toddlers can swing together. The new area replaces the old playground, which stood in place for 12 years and needed updating, and was funded by North Norfolk District Council to provide a modern children’s play area for the thousands of

visitors to the Green Flag Award winning park. The ribbon was cut by Leader of NNDC, Cllr Sarah Bütikofer with help from youngsters and their families already enjoying the new attractions, and cakes were provided by the on-site tea room, Hetty’s House, to mark the occasion. Cllr Bütikofer, said: “We all know the important role play has in the education of our younger residents. I am delighted the District Council has been able to deliver this new equipment allowing them to play and explore in this beautiful setting. It was fantastic to see youngsters of several different ages already enjoying the facility, the contractors and our rangers have done a wonderful job, and I hope this site will go on to deliver much enjoyment for years to come.”

GENERAL SYNOD & THE CLIMATE CRISIS. February 2020

committed to address its progress towards net zero emission every three years, perhaps we all need to be committed to personally do the same.
Dear Friends The challenges of a changing climate were once again on the agenda of the recent meeting of the General Synod I recently attended in London. Held between the aftermath of storm Ciara and the threat of storm Dennis we were all very much aware of the consequences of a changing climate. The frequency of extreme weather conditions is increasing and the urgency to act is a ever present reality. It is now widely accepted that there exists a climate emergency caused by rising Co2 emissions which is affecting the whole of our planet. Yet I was not quite prepared for members of General Synod to set itself the ambitious target for the Church to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030. Just ten years away! Net zero means that reductions of carbon emissions are reduced as much as possible and then the residual amount are offset by absorbing an equivalent amount from the atmosphere, for example through tree planting. The Church of England’s original target for carbon reduction to zero was 2045 which would have meant a reduction of 11% per year. This new target means the church will have to reduce its carbon footprint by 24% per year. This new amended target emphasizes the urgency to change our lifestyle and it should encourage people to act. We cannot continue to live as we do now. The climate is changing fast and is having a huge detrimental effect on eco systems around the world. Our lifestyle which relies heavily on carbon producing fossil fuels is not sustainable. The Church of England is encouraging its Dioceses and parishes to reduce their energy use, and move away from gas and oil to green electricity from renewable sources. Also, to think carefully about every journey made and move away from petrol/diesel powered cars. We are also being asked to find ways to protect and enhance biodiversity across church land and buildings, including churchyards, glebe land, and investment assets. The motion passed by Synod requires the Church to build ecological awareness into everything we do. Caring for creation is an essential element of our mission and ministry. I have to be honest and say that while I voted for the motion as a whole, I did not vote for the amendment which reduced the amount of time to achieve our target from 24 years to just 10 years. While such a target is commendable, I doubt if it is achievable. The cost of going green in just 10 years will be prohibitive to many of our churches in rural Norfolk who are struggling to maintain medieval buildings and maintain the churches ministry. But of course, that does not excuse us from doing nothing. While we may struggle to afford to reach the target of 2030, we cannot do nothing. We all need to review our lifestyles and makes changes in order to reduce or off set our carbon emission and protect the environment. The Church of England is www.holtchronicle.co.uk

THE MAD HATTER VISITS WEYBOURNE WI
Our February meeting began with member Dorothy re-reading our contribution to the Noreaster group carol service, an extract from All Creatures Great & Small describing a Yorkshire Christmas, to an enthralled audience. The agenda took us through setting dates for the various spin off activity groups to the selection of a local charity to support for the ensuing year, with Nelson’s Journey being eventually chosen. The main event was provided by Colin Rawlings, proprietor of The Red Dot Gallery in Holt together with Barrie Morris, illustrator and researcher of a beautifully illustrated book ‘Quirks and Quiddities of Norfolk’ which covers many curious characters ranging from Ann Boleyn’s Ghost to the Vicar of Stiffkey. On to the character of most interest to us: Colin, dressed in the style of The Mad Hatter of Weybourne introduced Barrie who explained that during his research he had ascertained that in the 1970’s Patrick Townend aka The Mad Hatter had given up a career in city banking to ‘entertain the people’. His antics included running an antique shop from which hardly anything was sold to blagging drinks and food from diners in the local hostelry. Love him or loathe him he was a notable eccentric worthy of inclusion in Barrie’s charming book, available from The Red Dot Gallery. Our meetings are held in the village hall on the first Wednesday afternoon of each month.
Work Starts on Electric Charge points in public car parks
Project aims to make Electric Vehicles accessible
North Norfolk District Council has commenced the installation of Electric Vehicle Charge Points (EVCPs) in six public car parks across the District following the confirmation of grant funding from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV). The £200,000 project will be funded jointly by the Council and OLEV and will futureproof car parks in local towns as electric vehicle numbers rise. OLEV is a Cross-Government team which aims to promote the use of electric vehicles. The grant funding helps councils to provide the infrastructure necessary to facilitate their introduction. NNDC proposes to install EVCPs in Council owned car parks in Sheringham, Cromer, Holt, Fakenham, Wells and North Walsham. The EVCs use ‘GeniePoint’, a web-based system for managing vehicle charging; the website allows customers to top up credit and sends a text message when charging is complete. The project aims to help meet the expected rise in demand for electric vehicles from around 250,000 currently to 6 million on the road by 2030. It has been identified that most Electric Vehicle users will charge their vehicles at home. By installing these facilities in areas where many nearby properties do not have their own off-street parking, the Council aims to provide charging points and make Electric Vehicles more accessible to both residents and visitors. Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “We are delighted to bring forward this new initiative which will see 34 Electric Vehicle Charge points introduced to our car parks across the District. This is just the first step on the Council’s path towards delivering our new ‘greener’ agenda. Whilst we are working to reduce our own Carbon footprints we want to help residents and visitors to play their part too.”
A Poem for Winter
Winter Aglow. When sunlight sparkles on cobwebs, When seed heads put on a brave show, When ice freezes puddles and bird baths, See the brilliance of Winter aglow. When frost patterns grow on the windows, When the moonlight glides over the snow, When icicles capture the sunlight, See the splendour of Winter aglow. When winds blow through chimneys and key holes, When Nature is on a go-slow, We huddle in woollies and slippers, Snuggled up with our warm fire aglow! Don’t just look upon Winter’s bleak side, The starkness of field and hedgerow, It has many beautiful facets, See the glory of Winter aglow! By Frances Wraight

Clinical Negligence –
One notable development in recent years is the extent to which medical staff are required to inform patients about the risks associated with particular treatment or surgery. Courts have found that, even when surgery or treatment has been carried out non-negligently, but medical staff have given insufficient information about the risks of that treatment, a claim could succeed. Medical staff are under a greater duty to both consider the risks of treatment and inform patients of them in order for a valid informed consent to be given. Clinical negligence claims are frequently complex, and it is important that anyone considering such a claim seeks advice at the earliest opportunity. To arrange an appointment with one of our clinical negligence specialists, or to discuss your individual circumstances in further detail, contact our Client Relations Team today on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk For more information on the clinical negligence services we offer, visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk
When is medical treatment negligent? The value of clinical negligence claims against the NHS was reported this week as being in excess of £80bn. A number of issues arise out of the reports, including the extent to which the NHS is learning from previous mistakes, defensive medicine and the standard of care provided to patients across all disciplines of medicine. The issue of whether care provided to a patient is negligent or not will depend very much on the type of care provided. Care, for these purposes, includes the interpretation of investigations, for example x-rays and blood samples, the provision of information regarding treatment options, including surgery and prescription drugs, as well as any surgery or non-invasive treatment provided. Although the standards by which treatment will be judged by the Courts continue to evolve, there are a number of areas where the picture is becoming clearer. The long-standing principles in the leading cases of Bolam and Bolitho still exist, but are applied more sparingly, for instance, the decision of a medical professional to follow one of a number of choices regarding a patient's care must still be one that a reasonable body of medical opinion would adopt and which stands up to logical scrutiny. Clinicians are required to take reasonable care in interpreting the results of scans, blood and tissue samples, which is a slightly different standard.

commando and parachute training, joined 148 Commando and served in Borneo. Four years later, Stuart became an air traffic controller, then moved on to Mobile Air Operations, setting up helicopter landing sites. In 1980, he started working at RAF Watton Eastern Radar, monitoring aircraft movements over Norfolk and the east coast. When the Falklands War erupted in 1982, Stuart was summoned to Yeovilton and on 12 May sailed from Southampton on the QE2, being the only naval officer with the 5th Infantry Brigade. Stuart took part in movements in and around the islands and was involved in the final attack on Stanley from Mount Tumbledown in extremely difficult conditions over rough terrain in freezing temperatures. Quotations by soldiers and the story of Lieutenant Lawrence, MC, who bravely stormed a machine gun nest during the Battle of Mount Tumbledown before being severely wounded by a sniper, reminded us of the courage and sacrifice involved in war. On behalf of the 33 members, 1 guest and 1 visitor present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Stuart for his interesting talk. Our next meeting at the Links Hotel in West Runton will be held on Tuesday 3 March when award-winning author Phyllida Scrivens will give a talk called ‘Escaping Hitler – Biography of Joe Stirling, Sheriff of Norwich’. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our monthly meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.
On Tuesday 4 February, after a delicious lunch, Stuart Fidler, a Falklands veteran and a past President of the Probus Club of Norwich, gave a fascinating talk called ‘The Falklands War – My Personal Journey’. Stuart enjoyed a varied military career, starting in 1960 as a radio operator in the Royal Navy on the frigate HMS Rocket. After further postings on frigates and an aircraft carrier, he tired of ships and in 1965, after

for visually impaired - Just gets bigger and better by working together with Vision Norfolk The North Norfolk support Forum is inclusive for sharing information for people who are blind or partially sighted (regardless of whether you are a service user of a guide dog), their families, friends, or carers. People who want to or do volunteer for guide dogs, supporters and fund raisers. During 2019 North Norfolk co-ordinators looked at how to increase the attendance of this meeting forum, and whilst moving forum North Walsham to Cromer did help we can still do more to help more people with sight loss. Every Tuesday, Vision Norfolk hold a coffee morning for those with sight loss. Guide Dogs strategy “By My Side” states Guide Dogs as an organisation want to go from supporting 250,000 people to 500,000 in five years. This does not mean providing 500,000 guide dogs! Support can be in many different forms, using different services but also ensuring we effectively signpost to other organisations and have good relations with those organisations too. BRISTON DAY CENTRE NEWS
We all have a lovely time here at the Centre going out and about and having fun rather than sitting at home alone feeling fed up with the weather and being bored! During this last month we have been to Langham Glass, Purdys cafe at the garden centre in Aylsham, and the Cley Wildlife Education Centre, where the views over the marshes and the wildlife are spectacular - and we enjoyed a coffee and a scone in their cafe. We had another trip to Morrisons at Fakenham, and not only did some shopping, but had a wonderful Fish and Chip lunch there too. Our trips out make us realise how lucky we are to have such beautiful countryside to drive through here on our doorstep! Neil Fippard organised a Beetle Drive for us which was great fun and Mick Leary entertained us on his Yamaha keyboard telling us lots of jokes and some of us even got up and danced and sang along when we knew the words! If you are retired or nearly-retired, and you think you could enjoy doing these sorts of things with our lovely band of ‘regulars’ then why not ‘phone Dorothy or Carol on a Monday or Thursday, on 01263 861120, to book a ‘taster’ session, or just pop in and say ‘hello’ and find out more about us! We meet every Monday and Thursday at All Saints Community Centre. All Saints Close, Briston, from 9.30am - 2.30pm.
SHAW’LY OUR BEST SHOW YET?
On the evening of Valentine’s Day, the Copeman Centre in Hall Street in Briston was packed with nearly 100 romantic live-music lovers to hear the amazing keyboard player and vocalist Pete Shaw weave his brand of musical magic. Having travelled all the way from North Wales to be with us, he played his two Korg keyboards and pedals combined instrument to perfection. From a super, really speedy Theatre organ medley, he progressed through such delights as ‘The Look Of Love’ which he sang as well, then the 'Thunderbirds March’, a very realistic Stephan Grapelli and Django Reinhard violin and guitar jazz set, to a full orchestra version of ‘Ave Maria’ and ended up playing a solid half-hour non-stop medley of popular film and TV themes, and as an encore, we had ‘633 Squadron’ and the ‘Dambusters March', complete with the sounds of bombs dropping, the air-raid siren, and even the mighty bells of Big Ben! (He had them, even if Brexit didn’t!) It was an all-round incredible evening of the best in live music, and with the raffle and refreshments making a bonus of £189 for the Copeman Centre, and our ongoing charity fundraising for ORBIS, the Flying Eye Hospital (which incidentally has been chosen by the Farnborough Air Show as their charity of the year - the ORBIS aircraft will be visiting during the show) getting a further £56.60 from our generous audience. Our next show is on Friday March 27th, when another amazing keyboard player will be visiting us, the extremely talented Ian House! Tickets for the show are available now by ‘phoning our Carol on 01263 860844, and are just £6 each. Shows start at 7.30pm, and with comfortable seats, great acoustics, easy free parking and wide level access, it really is a night out for everyone, young or not so young, indeed, anyone who loves the best in live music!
The Rotary Club of Fakenham & District
The Rotary Club of Fakenham & District has been afforded a unique fund raising opportunity in support of Rotary Charitable causes. This event is being organised specifically with our President’s Charity of the Year in mind which is ‘Action for Children’. We have been given permission by Lord Raynham to organise a fund raising event. Lord Raynham has agreed to open up a section of the Raynham Estate in order that the public may be able to take advantage of its long local history and view the many of the areas of particular interest around the proposed ramble route. This event is planned to take place on Sunday 31st May 2020 between 11pm and 5pm. The Raynham Estate is not ordinarily open to members of the public so we are particularly appreciative of this opportunity. The format of the day is to invite members of the public to arrive at the estate from an entrance from the A1065 Raynham Road, East Raynham, Fakenham and park adjacent to the original 5 acre enclosed ‘Walled Garden’. Entry to the estate and ramble route will be via the walled garden which will form the base for the day. Ramblers will be able to bring their families and their dogs (to be kept on a lead – the dogs that is!) and walk the predetermined route at their leisure. The ramble route is around 3 miles long but is configured in such a way that all or part of it can be walked depending upon the wish of the individual. They will also be able to take time for a picnic in the walled garden either before they walk the route or afterwards. An afternoon of entertainment will be provided by musical groups from within and around the Fakenham area. This means that the public will be able to choose whether or not they want to walk the ramble route and have a picnic, or just have a picnic and enjoy the entertainment that will be available. As this a fund raising event there will be small charge for £3 per person to take part. Under 5’s free. There is no charge for car parking. Further information regarding the work that ‘Rotary’ does can be found on our website at: www.fakenhamrotaryclub.wixsite.com/website or www.rotarygbi.org or www.rotary-gbi.org/districts/homepage.php? DistrictNo=1080 Further information regarding ‘Action for Children’ can be found at: www.actionforchildren.org.uk

The Holt Chronicle Issue 444 28th February 2020
Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard. Botty Beryl's Fishy Fable.
It is said of Norwich that there is a church for every week in the year and a pub for every day of the year. I can well imagine that though I never made a count. What I can say is that in my small part of Heigham, sixty years ago, there were as many fish and chip shops as pubs; that is three of each. How sobering it is to think that at that time five shillings (25 p!) bought a meal for five; the fish 9d the chips 3d. In my father's day, in the 1920's, the same price per meal was 3d, 2d for the fish and 1d for the chips. Our favourite shop was Braid's of Stafford Street. The late Jim Braid would be at the fish markets on the coast early each day and his father would be filleting it for lunch time and teatime which went round to about 10.30 pm! There were always long queues and they were always relentlessly shunting forward, because of the busy efficiency of Ivy Braid's selections and wrappings. If there is something of the salt waters around the Norfolk Coast in these recollections, there is also something distinctly salty in the story of Beryl Bourne-Upshire's visit to Lennie's fish and chip shop in old Norwich. She was, to use a Norfolk word, "botty" that is self-important; perhaps "bumptious" is the nearest word in the dictionary to represent her demeanour. Fish and chips were not normally part of the diet of the Bourne-Upshires in their native county, but the kiddies were on holiday and Beryl relented. Stepping up to the counter in Lennie's she said: "Give me six pieces of cod” Lennie responded in the laconic Norfolk of Norwich: "I'm sorry madam, I're got skeart, plearce an' 'aadick but no cod." Undeterred, Beryl demanded: " Give me four pieces of cod." Lennie repeated: "I'm sorry madam, there's skeart, plearce an' 'aadick but no cod. Beryl insisted: "Give me two pieces of cod!" Lennie shifted tack: "Look madam can you spell skeart?" Beryl: "Yes of course, s k a t e!" Lennie: "What about plearce?" Beryl: "Well, p l a i c e !" Lennie: What about 'aadick? Beryl: Well, h a d d o ck !" Then he delivered his coup de grace: "What about cod?" to which Beryl responded: "Well, c o d" Lennie came back: "What about the f?" Beryl said quite imperiously: "There's no f in cod!" To which came the fabled bottom line: " Thas's wot I're bin a tellin' on yer!"
HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUB
The European influence during the 1700’s and an association with the landscape gardener Humphrey Repton and the botanist Sir Joseph Banks resulted in a massive natural landscaping project, which launched Repton’s career. When seed merchant John Ketton acquired the estate in the nineteenth century, he bought many newly introduced camellias and rhododendrons and created pleasure walks of light and dark contrasts, probably enhanced by the widespread use of opiates at that time! Ketton also experimented with exotic ornamentals in the walled garden, where they wouldn’t impact on the landscape. By the 1970’s, the walled garden mainly contained low maintenance and drought tolerant plants typical of most municipal areas. However, Tina follows Ketton’s example of experimentation and has broadened borders and planted them with annuals and many perennials that were thought too tender to survive here but have thrived. Where elderly fruit trees are removed, she cannot replace them because of rose replant disease (most belong to the Rose family). Her latest project is a grove of cob nut trees instead, which are to be interspersed with birches and maples with decorative bark so that the nut trees are shaded from sun scorch. Sounds exciting! Interested in joining our Club? Contact Tanya hkgcsecretary@gmail.com
On 10th February Tina Hammond , head gardener at Felbrigg Hall, talked about the garden's history and how it has developed in the 20 years she has been there. Before the eighteenth century, the Windham family ran the estate to optimise agriculture and forestry. Apart from a small formal area around the hall, the garden was utilitarian, producing food for the family.

Royal Air Force Bircham Newton Heritage Centre
New Hunstanton Heritage Centre Opens
A former bank has been transformed into a new heritage centre in Hunstanton. The Hunstanton Heritage Centre formally opened its doors on Friday 14th February at a very successful opening ceremony. On show at the new venue are displays showing the history of Hunstanton from prehistoric times through to more recent events such as the coming of the railway to Kings Lynn and the 1953 floods. Former Society chairman John Maiden said: "During the five years that it occupied premises at 15 The Green, Hunstanton Heritage Centre grew in popularity with visitors and locals alike with 10,000 visiting each year. "When this property changed hands at the start of 2019, and the displays had to be moved out, the former NatWest bank was acquired thanks to the prompt actions of one very generous benefactor." Mr Maiden said converting the building had taken "an enormous amount of hard manual labour", mostly carried out by civic society members over the four months preceding the initial opening in June last year. He added: "Support from those unable to wield power tools, or even paint brushes, has come in the form of donations, both large and small, including one cheque for £2,500 from a Civic Society member who wished to remain anonymous.” Thousands have visited the volunteer-run attraction since it opened last summer. At Friday's opening Michael le Strange Meakin, a descendant of Henry Styleman le Strange who founded the town as a coastal resort in the 1840s, said: "It's absolutely splendid. They've done a really good job and an outstanding amount of work. It's got some wonderful displays." Amanda Bosworth, chair of the town's Civic Society, said the centre's aim was to celebrate all that people love about Hunstanton and its surrounding area. West Norfolk historian Dr Paul Richards, who performed the ribbon cutting said: "It's amazing that a community group like yourselves have put so much effort in." Guests included Brian Holmes, who first founded the heritage centre. He said: "It's a unique town, which was formed totally different to most towns." Hunstanton was the brainchild of Henry Styleman le Strange, who saw the potential of building a rail link to carry tourists to the coast. Its darkest day came on January 31, 1953, when a storm tide smashed through flood defences, claiming 31 lives. Earlier, shoppers paused as the City of Norwich Pipe Band marched through town before performing a display on The Spinney. The new Heritage Centre is open to the public from 12pm to 3pm #Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays and bank holidays until the clocks change then 1pm until 5pm on the same days throughout the summer. After I paid for my items in an adorable Italian shop, the salesperson smiled and said “Grazie,” Italian for “thank you.” My Italian isn’t very good, but I knew that the Italian word for “you’re welcome” was the same as the name of a spaghetti sauce. So I confidently replied “Ragú!” and walked out of the store. A little while later, it hit me: I had the wrong spaghetti sauce. “You’re welcome” is prego. www.holtchronicle.co.uk

Anson VX-B (K6183) was the first of Bircham Newton’s aircraft to be shot down in World War 2 on September 5th 1939, just two days after Britain declared war on Germany. The story of this plane and its fortunate New Zealand pilot, who survived to become one of the first prisoners of the war, can be read in the RAF Heritage Centre. The Heritage Centre at Bircham Newton has a unique collection of memorabilia from the former Royal Air Force station’s past service, which spanned more than 44 years, including two world wars and the Cold War. On display are photographs and personal memories of servicemen who served there and other related items from its fascinating history. SHERINGHAM AND DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY
The Society’s AGM took place on Monday 10th February and was well attended. The committee were unanimously voted to continue their good work. A discussion on the merits of holding meetings in the afternoons during the winter period were discussed but it was decided to continue with evening meetings throughout the year. A sale of philatelic items, which had been passed on to the society, followed the business side of things and resulted in a donation of £32.25 to an Alzheimer’s charity and another £32.25 to club funds. The next meeting will be on March 9th, at the usual venue of West Runton Church Hall, at 7.30pm. Jim Farrell, the Society’s secretary, will present “Pages from my albums”. If you would be interested in coming to this meeting, or finding out more about becoming a member, please contact Jerry on 01263 579529 or Jim on 01263 721043. Norfolk GP practice sees patient waiting times reduced by 90% thanks to new online technology
A Norfolk GP practice has seen appointment waiting times reduced by 90% thanks to a new online patient booking system. Fakenham Medical Practice says waiting times for appointments have reduced from four weeks to either the same day, or within 72 hours, because of the new system which enables patients to go online and request advice or an appointment without having to telephone. They can do this 24/7 and the requests are attended to during normal working hours. Patients can still phone if they want. Patients can ask questions and report symptoms. The practice then looks at the request and responds within a stated timeframe, connecting the patient to the right person, service or support. Sarah Buchan, CEO at Fakenham Medical Practice said: “We switched from the traditional booking system to the new online programme in October 2019 and we have been delighted with the impact it has had and the feedback we have received from patients in a short time. “Patients are getting the help they need more quickly and conveniently and, for the surgery, it has reduced the pressure on phone lines and helps ensure face to face appointments are for those who really need it. The new website also gives patients more access and information at their ďŹ ngertips. “The programme means patients can ask questions and report symptoms. The practice then looks at the request and responds within a stated timeframe, connecting the patient to the right person, service or support. “For many people, an online response or phone call from a clinician can www.holtchronicle.co.uk

resolve their enquiry. However, they can request a face to face appointment if they wish, or a clinician can advise them to come into the surgery if they think a face to face consultation is necessary.â€? The surgery has seen a number of beneďŹ ts for patients including; • Reduction of 82% in patients who fail to turn up to appointments (DNAs) • Waiting time dropped from 4 weeks to either same day or within 72 hours • Patients are able to be seen by the most appropriate clinician • Reduced waiting times on the phone as more people are using the internet • Greater amount of routine queries dealt with without the need for patients to visit the surgery. The new website called Footfall oers much more than online consultations. It is designed to help patients navigate their way to ďŹ nd help in exactly the way they would if they walked into reception. The home page of the website is clearly laid out to help patients to manage their health and regular medicines more easily and request to see a health professional. Dr Ed Turnham, a GP in Norfolk and Waveney who is the local clinical lead for online consultations said: “The new websites and online consultations are proving hugely popular. Almost every comment received from patients or that we have seen on social media has been very positive.â€? Feedback from patients has been overwhelmingly positive, with comments including: “I submitted a form and then 28 mins later I had been seen and sent away with a prescription. Can’t get better than that!â€? “I just wanted to say that since the introduction of the new system, I think it is brilliant. It seems to be a far greater use of resources and you are dealt with in a far more eďŹƒcient way. Well done!â€?

Holt Festival invites entries for the Sir John Hurt Art Prize and Sworders Art Prize 2020 competitions
Holt Festival today announced that this year’s Sir John Hurt Art Prize and Sworders Art Prize competitions are now open for entries. Established in 2012, the Holt Festival Sir John Hurt Art Prize is one of East of England’s top art prizes and attracts a wide range of entries from artists across the UK. In addition to a cash prize of £1,750, the winning work of art will be exhibited at the prestigious Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, Norfolk. Now in its second year, the Holt Festival Sworders Art Prize is specifically aimed at younger artists aged between 16 and 23 years inclusive. Together with a cash prize of £750, the winning artist will be offered a commission free exhibition at The Gallery, a contemporary art space in Holt, Norfolk. James Glennie, Holt Festival Fine Art Director, explained: “Submissions must be suitable for wall-hanging and can comprise various art forms including painting, drawing, photography, textiles, printmaking, mosaic, sculpture, collage etc.” Glennie added: “Entries for both competitions close at midnight on Sunday 14 June 2020. Approximately 30 works of art will subsequently be shortlisted, and the winner announced at a private view of the Exhibition of Shortlisted Works on the evening of Sunday 26 July 2020 at The Auden Theatre in Holt. The Exhibition of Shortlisted Works will then run until Saturday 1 August 2020.” Entries for this year’s Sir John Hurt Art Prize will be judged by art and architectural historian, Nichola Johnson; curator and publisher, David Case; and award-winning artist, Susan Gunn. And the Sworders Art Prize entries will be judged by Susan Gunn and publisher and gallery owner, Adrian Hill. Professor John Last OBE, Vice-Chancellor of Norwich University of the Arts and a judge of the Holt Festival Sir John Hurt Art Prize and Sworders Art Prize 2019, said: “The Sir John Hurt Art Prize is now a major award and exhibition for artists in the East of England and beyond and the Sworders Art Prize for young artists is an excellent addition to the main prize. As one of the judges of both awards last year, I was impressed by the range and standard of entries which are increasing in number and quality each year. I look forward to seeing the 2020 exhibition.” Jess Burgess, who has been shortlisted for the Holt Festival Sir John Hurt Art Prize on three occasions, added: “The Sir John Hurt Art Prize was the first major exhibition I’ve been part of and has provided me with so many opportunities to develop my painting practice. As a direct result, I have formed my own network of artists and people working within the arts in Norfolk and London. The support and feedback received at the Sir John Hurt Art Prize has allowed me to develop more confidence in my ability as a young artist and I don’t think that I would have had the success with recent competitions and exhibitions without that experience. I’m very grateful to have been involved with such a prestigious prize and for the opportunities which it has opened up for me.” Bringing together the best in fine art, music, theatre, and the spoken word, Holt Festival is a fabulous celebration of the arts and this year takes place from Sunday 26 July until Saturday 1 August 2020. For more information on Holt Festival and the Sir John Hurt Art Prize and Sworders Art Prize 2020 competitions, including details on how to submit entries, please visit: www.holtfestival.org.

Rogue trader warning following stormy weather
February and told the elderly occupant his chimney needed fixing. They asked for £1,500 in payment, which the victim paid but the men did not return. Superintendent Chris Harvey said: "These are callous incidents were elderly residents are deliberately being targeted by ruthless rogue traders. "We are warning residents to be aware of opportunistic criminals offering roof repairs, particularly after the stormy weather we have been experiencing. "Remember that you do not have to open your door to cold callers. Close and lock your back door before answering the front door. If you do not recognise the person, speak through the closed and locked door. If they are selling something or offering to do any work on your house or garden, tell them you are not interested and ask them to leave. If they persist tell them you will call the police and call us on 999. If you have any doubt – keep them out. "Our colleagues at Norfolk County Council's Trading Standards advise that residents should never agree to buy goods from, or have work done, by someone that calls unannounced at their door, or approaches them on the street. "Often such traders don't provide full names, trading addresses or contact telephone numbers, resulting in it being virtually impossible to trace them if there are any problems with the work or goods.” Anyone feeling threatened by a cold caller should call 999 immediately. Anyone with information about suspected rogue traders should contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Residents are being warned to be aware of rogue traders offering roof repairs in the county. Officers have received reports of four incidents in recent weeks where a group of up to three men have attended addresses claiming to be from legitimate building companies. On Tuesday 28 January, an elderly home owner in the Vera Road area of Norwich was approached by a man going by the name of ‘Tony’ who claimed he was from a home improvement company and needed to repair the roof. He told the victim more than £9,000 payment was needed upfront for supplies and scaffolding, which the victim paid but ‘Tony’ did not return. A man called ‘Tony’ and two other men attended an elderly couple’s address in the Earlham Road area of Norwich on Thursday 6 February claiming they were there to fix the roof. Two of the men were seen to go on the roof and damage the chimney before asking for more than £2,000 to fix it. On Monday 10 February, an elderly woman paid more than £1,000 to two men who attended her address in the Banham Drive area of Swanton Morley claiming her chimney needed fixing following the high winds. However, the men did not return. In the most recent incident reported to officers, two men attended an address in the Pembrey Close area of Norwich on Wednesday 12

Runners will pass through a picturesque unspoilt water meadow set against the backdrop of the River Bure, and past a stunning English Heritage monument. The event in Burgh-next-Aylsham is the brainchild of Susie Anderson, the daughter of the landowner, who was inspired to organise the fundraiser after two people close to her were diagnosed with cancer. Dedicated to raising funds for Cancer Research UK, the run will finish in a specially set-up “village” with live music, artisan food and drink, holistic treatments and a “Tree of Hope” and remembrance. The bands booked are DGAS women’s acoustic African drumming group, Polymer 5, BroadBeat Choir and Spangle Pans. “Cancer touches all of our lives in some form, be it personally, family member, friend or colleague,” says Susie. “My initial reaction when I found out that my cousin and best friend had both been diagnosed with cancer was that of shock and helplessness, but I got the seeds of an idea to try and put on an event to raise some money for Cancer Research UK and I love running, so I put the two together and it gathered pace from there.” The event on Saturday 20 June, at Wood Lane, Burgh-Next-Aylsham, has already attracted support from local companies such as Barnwell Print and Quotatis Ltd, and tickets are on sale for £15 on the Bring It On Burgh website . The organisers are also seeking non-runner volunteers to marshal on the day. More information on www.bringitonburgh.co.uk, @bringitonburgh.co.uk, or #bringitonburgh
Visitors welcome!
From pre-historic to present day – North Norfolk Visitor Centre celebrates official opening and introduction of fun new 'Discover Zone' The North Norfolk Visitor Centre was officially opened on Monday 10 February, with an exciting reveal of the brand new look for the tourist information hub. As well as the traditional visitor information service the centre now also includes a “Discovery Zone,” a fantastic new resource which forms part of North Norfolk District Council’s “Deep History Coast” initiative. Council members, project partners, staff and business Ambassadors gathered for the celebration, which included a screening of the new DHC film and representatives on-hand to discuss the key project elements from fossil hunting to the upcoming mammoth Marathon. In a speech to the assembly, Cllr. Virginia Gay, NNDC’s Portfolio Holder for Culture and Wellbeing said: “The centre will explain the evolution of our coastline and the wealth of evidence that puts our area among the most historically significant in the world. It will tell a story which goes back hundreds of thousands of years - a story that was mostly unknown when I first became a councillor. And the very best thing about it is that this story is still unfolding.” The newly renovated Visitor Centre features audio-visual, interactive and tactile displays showcasing the incredible history of the area and email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

continuing evolution of our coastline. New treasures are unearthed on our beaches every day from common fossils to finds, such as the West Runton mammoth and Happisburgh footprints, which help shape our understanding of Britain’s earliest inhabitants. On the walls and shelves you can find DHC merchandise and displays with Augmented Reality scenes bringing the past to life through the mobile app. The app is free to download and explorers can use it to continue their journey with a trail map, fossil finder and collector journal as well as useful updates on tide times and weather and locations of local cafe's, shop, pubs and accommodation providers connected with the project. Users of the app can bring a Mammoth and a Hominin family to life in the palm of their hands, or take a mammoth selfie with a number of other pre-historic animals. The Visitor Centre welcomes all explorers, and encourages them to discover North Norfolk’s rich geological and archaeological past. There is also information on our local businesses and attractions, many of whom are signed up as Ambassadors to the project. The toilet facilities have also seen a complete redevelopment, including the installation of a Changing Places accessible toilet facility. The Visitor Centre is the perfect point from which to learn more about the “Discovery Trail,” a series of 11 interactive sites stretching along the 22 miles of coastline between Weybourne and Cart Gap. These installations reveal even more fascinating content when used in conjunction with the Deep History Coast app.

Adventures with Blakeney Rowing Club
In between the attentions of Storms Ciara and Dennis there have been some really enjoyable rowing outings on the Broads. For example, a recent event was the Valentine’s Day row to Dilham on 14th February. As the channel narrowed, the oars were stored in the skiff and shorter paddles used to propel Hoi Larntan into Dilham. It was great fun paddling to the Wayford Bridge Inn for lunch. This is just one example of a day out with Blakeney Rowing Club and pictures of this adventure can be seen on the website at crablakeney.wordpress.com. Many more such expeditions will take place on the Broads as well as towards Blakeney Point in the coming months. There are also social events planned when people can meet up for a drink and a chat. If you wish to be part of the fun, both on and off the water, then phone club captain Humphrey on 07542 371469. Rowing is a great experience and you could take advantage of three trial rows before deciding whether you wish to pay for membership of the club. Coaching and lifejackets are always available. Get fit for the summer and come skiff rowing in great company. Make contact soon. You won’t regret it. Barry Howes.
Wells Inshore Lifeboat launched to assist 4 visitors to Wells -- cut off by tide
HM Coastguard paged Wells Lifeboat on 8th February after the local Coastwatch team had reported that four persons were in danger of being cut off by the tide on the sands to the west side of Wells Harbour approaches on the incoming tide. The crew were paged at 14:19 and the Inshore Lifeboat launched outside the boathouse at 14:30. The lifeboat was on scene at 14:35 and picked up the four young ladies who were by this time above their knees in water. The lifeboat then proceeded back to the boathouse with the casualties onboard arriving back at the station at 14:43 and was rehoused, refuelled and ready again for service at 3.20 pm. The casualties all had very cold feet as the sea water has come over the tops of their boots. The casualties were taken to the lifeboat station where they were able to warm up before the Coastguard took them back to their accommodation in the town.

A festival of nearly 100 events with a digital twist for children and young people is set to return for a second year across Norfolk County Council’s libraries. The free activities for DigiFest 2020 will give children aged 4 to 14 the chance to get hands-on with fun digital tech. Hurry though – many of the events are already booked up or have limited availability. Book on by visiting the website at www.norfolk.gov.uk/digifest 8 to 11 year olds can make their own Lego stop-motion film, ‘Code-apillar’ gives younger children the chance to learn some early coding skills, and 3D printing pens can bring their imagination alive, letting them build their creation as they draw. Councillor Margaret Dewsbury, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “It’s really important that in this increasingly digital age we give children the chance to learn these vital skills. We know that not everyone has regular access to digital technology and that’s why we’ve made sure there will be an event at every library in Norfolk. “We’ve increased the number of events from 58 to 99 this year, which shows just how much parents and children enjoyed them last year.” This year the Library and Information Service is working with SENsational Families to provide some additional sessions which are exclusively for families of children with additional needs. Almost all these sessions are in separate spaces away from the main library to make sure children are comfortable. Please note that siblings are welcome, and parents should attend along with the child. Last year 479 children and parents enjoyed 58 events. This year even more children will be able to take part and have fun at 99 events across the 47 Norfolk libraries.
My 11-year-old takes his homework seriously. One question required him to write a sentence using the word version. His sentence: “Have you heard of the version Mary?”
